the continuity family
The Generation 1 continuity family is the biggest, oldest, and longest-running family in the Transformers canon. Its core is all of the fiction published under the Generation 1 franchise, which got off to a bifurcated start in 1984 with the Marvel comic and Sunbow cartoon, two distinct universes starring the same cast of characters. Alongside those two main continuities there sprang up a cluster of micro-continuities in the form of books, flyers, and more comics.

As the years went on, many subsequent franchises used strands of Generation 1 lore as the backstory of their own fiction, thus joining and extending the continuity family. Even when the main Transformers franchise is separate from Generation 1, oftentimes secondary "filler" franchises will keep the continuity going. It has also been a favorite with modern comic companies, who have been publishing a relatively steady stream of Generation 1-branded comics for most of this decade.

In Japan, TakaraTomy has not only contributed to the continuity family with unique series of its own, but it even published an "official timeline" that jammed Car Robots and the 2007 film into the Generation 1 multiverse. The inclusion of Car Robots is corroborated by Kiss Players fiction and timelines, but nothing else has touched upon the movie being part of the Generation 1 continuity family.

In-universe, this continuity is referred to as "Primax" in the TransTechs' universal stream designators.

Franchises
The size and complexity of the various component continuities make them very difficult to list properly. So instead we will list all of the franchises whose fiction makes up this continuity family:
Beast Wars is a Transformers franchise that began in 1996, following the end of Generation 2. It was a massive reinvention of the brand, featuring robots that changed into realistic, organically-styled animals instead of the traditional vehicles or mechanical beasts. The accompanying cartoon was another visual break, being the first fully-CGI Transformers series. It also did the seemingly unthinkable and replaced the original two factions, the Autobots and Decepticons, with the Maximals and the Predacons. Though originally decried by fans, Beast Wars dramatically reinvigorated the brand, whose sales had been flagging under the Generation 2 franchise.

"Beast Wars" is also frequently used as a catchall term for the Beast Era in which Beast Wars and other series occur.

Franchise elements
The Beast Wars franchise features the following primary components:

* A toyline — (1996–2000)
* A cartoon series — (1996–1999) called Beasties in many Canadian markets to appear less violent.
* A video game for PC and PS based on Beast Wars (specifically, the original organic exterior versions).
* A video game for PS and N64 based on Beast Wars (specifically, the Transmetal versions).
* A video game for Game Boy Color based on Beast Wars, Beast Wars II and Beast Wars Neo.
* Several later comic series that retcon the cartoon and Japanese series.

Japanese release
In Japan, the first season of the North American cartoon was aired with a markedly "kiddified" dub, accompanied by releases of the concurrent toys. Then two cel-animated series unique to Japan were aired, with their own toylines and manga. After those finished, the remaining two North American CGI seasons were aired and toys released under the name "Beast Wars Metals".

While the Japanese-produced Beast Wars animated productions used cell animation, the toys' box art was rendered in a similar style to the original Mainframe cartoon, whereas the Western releases of the toys were the complete reverse, featuring hand drawn box art (fueling speculation that the Japanese toys had their packaging done in Soviet Russia).

* Beast Wars
* 1998 — Beast Wars II
* 1999 — Beast Wars Neo
* Beast Wars Metals

Continuations and addenda
There are several 'expanded' Beast Wars storylines featuring events taking place 'just offscreen' of the cartoon series. Though the events of cartoon series are understood to occur just as had been portrayed, the context may be different, taking place in different time periods, etc. These contradictory stories all co-exist within the vast Transformers Multiverse.

Most of these exist mainly through Beast Wars comics.

Highlights include:

* From 1997–2004, 3H featured a series of comics, toy-exclusives and text stories set in the same continuity as the Beast Wars and Beast Machines cartoon series, continuing into the Transformers: Universe series.
* IDW Publishing has produced 2 series and a profile sourcebook This continuity is notable for including toys and events from several Japanese Beast Wars series. (See Beast Wars timeline (IDW))
* Fun Publications Timelines imprint (2005–?) has published several Beast Wars comics and text stories.

Prehistoric Earth
The Beast Wars' time period (like its exact location,) was never established during the cartoon's original run. In the years after the cartoon ended several official dates have been given:

* 3,000,000 years ago — "Sixtrain! Activate Red Mode!!" — (2003) — (August, 2003)
* 180,000 BC — "Primeval Dawn Part 2" — (July, 2004)
* 70,000 BC — Beast Wars: The Gathering #2 — (March, 2006)

Each of these dates applies to a different continuity or "alternate dimension" within the Transformers Multiverse, so they do not conflict with one another. The Maximals and Predacons in those dimensions simply crashed at different times, but had otherwise identical adventures. (Generally with different events taking place 'offscreen' unique to each expanded continuity.)

Though Earth's geology and biology seen in the cartoon does not fit any single era, the loose "window" of 70,000–180,000 B.C. seems to represent two extremes that are "about right".

"Other" Beast Wars
* The initial toys and the mini-comic packed with the basic Optimus Primal VS Megatron two-pack toy strongly implied that Beast Wars was a continuation of the previous Autobot/Decepticon conflict on present day Earth, with Primal and Megatron simply new forms of Optimus Prime and the original Megatron. This setting was abandoned when the 1996 cartoon established its futuristic setting. This remains an intriguing micro-continuity.
* A version of the Beast Wars occurred in the past of the Unicron Trilogy continuity family. One text story ("Fire in the Dark") in the 2004 Transformers Legends anthology is set in this version of Beast Wars.

* The 2007 live-action movie franchise has a version of the Beast Wars in its past.
* The Animated franchise had its own Beast Wars fought during the Great War on the planet Animatron.

A dramatic change
The major change in direction for Transformers followed organizational changes within Hasbro. Hasbro had acquired rival toy manufacturer Kenner as part of their 1991 Tonka acquisition, and in 1995 they transferred their boys' toy lines from the Hasbro headquarters in Rhode Island to Kenner's Cincinnati, Ohio offices. Kenner was asked to revitalize the brand with new ideas, and that is exactly what they did.

Then lead designer Chris Gross inadvertently kicked off the Beast Wars concept when he proposed a stylistic change from hard-edged, blocky robots to Guyver-inspired "organic" machines. The "Beast Masks" on the first few Beast Wars toy designs were conceived of as a way of easing the transition from traditional Transformers into Beast Wars by showing that there was a robot within the beast, not just an animal that transforms into some kind of monster. The Beast Wars line title was inspired by a past toyline of Kenner's, namely Future War line of Terminator toys. It was chosen based on the idea that it portrayed a "visceral conflict". The show would not have been made unless a drastically new concept from the original Transformers was created, as G1 was considered a stale property at the time.

Reception
Beast Wars was the first complete reinvention of the Transformers brand, discarding the previous setting/characters/factions to create a new story, set several hundred years in the future. Transformers in the Beast Era are much smaller (often human-sized) and transform into 'fleshy' non-robotic animals. Initially met with outrage by many fans (for a variety of reasons) Beast Wars would eventually become highly regarded, largely due to the exceptional quality of the cartoon series. It is now not unusual for even longtime Generation 1 fans to consider Beast Wars to be their favorite Transformers franchise. This is perhaps best shown by the fact that, fifteen years later, the first two fan-chosen characters to enter the Transformers Hall of Fame were Dinobot and Waspinator.
Transformers is a toyline launched in 2010 with the intention of re-envisioning the live action movie toyline into a broader celebration of the history of the brand. The line now features many characters who had not appeared in the movies, but at the same time Hasbro is able to plausibly present it as a movie tie-in to retailers who (naturally) are very eager to stock merchandise related to the highly popular and successful films.

It also includes the Hunt for the Decepticons promotion in 2010 and the Reveal the Shield rubsign promotion in late 2010/early 2011.

Confusingly, the line has two different styles of packaging: the regular yellow packaging and the less common red packaging that is very similar in design to the Generations toyline, but lacks the Generations subtitle.
* The plastic-coated wire twist-ties, which were normally used to secure a toy in its packaging in past toylines, have been replaced with paper-based tie-downs. The paper tie-downs are also used in the Generations toyline.
* The 2010 Transformers toyline contains several toys with a design aesthetic similar to the Generations line. This led to confusion when fan expectations were contradicted by official Hasbro announcements.
Canada is like the United States of America, but bigger, politer, and health care-ier.

Toronto is Canada's largest city.

Non-fiction.
Canada has had a surprisingly large behind-the-scenes role in producing Transformers. It is home of Mainframe Entertainment, who produced the Beast Wars and Beast Machines television series.
During the tail end of Generation 1, Canada received several toys the U.S. did not, like the Turbomasters. Generally speaking, US exclusives tend to turn up at Canadian retail, with Walmart and Toys"R"Us keeping their exclusives and Target exclusives winding up at Zellers, a Canadian chain.

Due to Canada being a bilingual country, it's always had multilingual packaging. The toys also required multilingual character names for a long time. This tends to cause problems, as Toys"R"Us has for a long time not produced multilingual packaging for their exclusives, resulting in them being sold in most of Canada but not in the French-speaking province of Quebec. This has changed with the release of the "Masters of Metallikato" two-pack, but it remains to be seen if it will be the exception or the new rule.
Canada has had a surprisingly large behind-the-scenes role in producing Transformers.

It is home of Mainframe Entertainment, who produced the Beast Wars and Beast Machines television series. It was also home to the now-defunct Dreamwave Productions whose top-selling 2002 Generation 1 revival comic led directly to the production of the 2007 movie.fact Several Transformers voice actors and comic artists also call Canada home.

Toronto is Canada's largest city.

Non-fiction
Canada has had a surprisingly large behind-the-scenes role in producing Transformers. It is home of Mainframe Entertainment, who produced the Beast Wars and Beast Machines television series. It was also home to the now-defunct Dreamwave Productions whose top-selling 2002 Generation 1 revival comic led directly to the production of the 2007 movie.fact Several Transformers voice actors and comic artists also call Canada home.

The remote town of Doonstown had the misfortune to be the battleground for Grimlock and Sludge. The town was destroyed and the Decepticons raided a nearby oil rig. Dinobot Hunt!
After getting caught spying on the Constructicons in Alaska, Hoist had to carry his brain-damaged comrade Jazz back to the United States through Canada. It took him two days. The Mission

When Ratchet blew up the Ark like a shaken-up bottle of beer, it crashed somewhere in northern Canada. The Ark, not the beer, 'cause that'd be a waste of good beer. But Galvatron survived the crash, and since he's like, a big hoser, he killed a bunch of Canadian army guys. Then Spike Witwicky and Fortress Maximus came and beat him up and tossed him in a lake, and that was pretty much it for Galvatron. The Last Autobot?
Earthforce
earthforcefiction
When Grimlock and his group broke away from the regular Autobot forces, they landed their shuttle near Churchill, Manitoba, an area, like, famed for its polar bears. Once upon a Time...

Wheeljack began construction of a permanent Earthbase nearby, presumably from parts of the shuttle. Mystery! The Earthforce were then visited at their shuttle by the Autobot Survivors, requesting assistance to rescue Carnivac. Wolf in the Fold! Augmented by the Survivors and the Aerialbots, the Earthforce completed their base, but there were teething toubles with the security system The House that Wheeljack Built! and they were attacked by Soundwave's forces before these could be fixed. Fortunately they were able to drive off the Decepticons. Divide and Conquer!

Not long afterwards, Optimus Prime visited the Earthbase for an inspection, while the Dinobots attempted to hide a psychotic defect in Slag's circuitry. The 4,000,000 Year Itch! The Autobot leader left behind Tracks in the Earthforce's Body Shop to Grimlock's great displeasure. Makin' Tracks! After Optimus returned to the Ark, the three Mayhems Bludgeon, Stranglehold and Octopunch escaped from Earthbase's brig by keeping schtum. Shut Up!

After assisting the Earthforce in deactivating a cerebro-shell-controlled Superion in New York, the human reporter Irwin Spoon visited the Earthbase to conduct an interview with Grimlock but the interview was interrupted by the Stunticons driving up the only road in Canada to abduct Spoon. Front Line! Though he was rescued, he was implanted with a cerebro-shell himself by Bombshell and ended up writing Decepticon propaganda. {{storylink|End of the Road! Lightfoot's father moved from England to Canada to fulfill his dream of starting a car company, this apparently being more achievable in Canada. The resulting company is the prestigious British Motors, which is a perfectly logical name for a company started in Canada. Lightfoot: A Dramatic Encounter
