Scourge is Galvatron's implacable tracker and leader of his own cadré of huntsmen, the deadly Sweeps. He was created by Unicron from the remains of the mortally wounded Thundercracker. Immensely powerful like all the Unicronian Decepticons, arrogance is his only true weakness. Despite being quite powerful in his own right, Scourge generally acts as a near subordinate to Cyclonus, and, despite his leadership of the Sweeps, is generally content to take orders from others. Scourge tends to grumble and complain a bit (a habit sometimes shared by his Sweeps).

But then again, you'd also complain if your boss spent so much time beating you up, wouldn't you?

Following the Battle of Autobot City in 2005, Scourge was created from the remains of Thundercracker by Unicron. Scourge was designated commander of his legion of huntsmen, the Sweeps, and traveled with his new leader, Galvatron, back to Cybertron. Galvatron, Scourge and Cyclonus then returned to Autobot City and sent the remaining Autobots fleeing into outer space.

After blasting their ship, the Decepticons believed the Autobots dead. Unicron sent a painful message to Galvatron, informing him he was wrong. Galvatron argued the point until Scourge reminded his leader "we belong to him". The Decepticons then tracked the Autobots to the Planet of Junk where Scourge and the Sweeps dismembered Ultra Magnus and stole the Matrix of Leadership. Unicron learned of Galvatron's intended rebellion and attacked Cybertron. Whether Scourge, who was vocally loyal to Unicron, fought to protect Cybertron is unknown.

After the Decepticons were sent packing to Chaar, Cyclonus and Scourge went on an expedition to track down their lost leader, Galvatron, who hadn't been seen since Unicron went kablooey. They found Galvatron soaking in a lava pit on Thrull, and much to their disappointment, discovered their leader had gone totally nuts.

Scourge continued to serve the Decepticon cause, though his effectiveness was debatable. Scourge would prove to be a very poor leader, with his followers, the Sweeps, constantly ignoring his orders (though they were scared to death of Cyclonus). He was later possessed by the disembodied ghost of Starscream, though this eventually became a mutual partnership. Starscream intended to help Unicron turn Cybertron into his new body in exchange for a new body of his own. Scourge began to have second thoughts about this until Unicron reminded him that "what I have given you, I can also take away". Scourge eventually left Unicron and rejoined the Decepticons.

At one point, Autobot Supreme Commander Rodimus Prime was separated from the Matrix of Leadership by Galvatron. Galvatron, who was haunted by the spirits within it, instructed Scourge to dispose of the Matrix. Scourge decided to use the power of the Matrix to his advantage and installed it within his chest. Very bad idea. The Matrix proved incompatible with Decepticon programming, causing Scourge to morph into a hideous freak with the power driving him mad. Scourge attempted to seize control of the Decepticons until Hot Rod took back the Matrix. Scourge was left at the mercy of a very unhappy Galvatron.

In 2007, Scourge journeyed to Nebulos with his fellow Decepticons while following the Autobots. The Decepticons formed an alliance with the Hive, and Scourge was binary-bonded to Fracas, becoming a Targetmaster.

The Transformer manga
Headmasters cartoon
Both Scourge's and Cyclonus' intelligence seemed to have evaporated by the year 2011, leaving Galvatron's once right-hand men nothing but a pair of bumbling oafs.

At one point they attempted to prove their worth by stealing Trypticon and using him to hunt down a mysterious sixchanger. However, that plan failed miserably when that sixchanger turned out to be their own ally, Sixshot. Both Scourge and Cyclonus ditched Trypticon in battle, leading to the Decepticon city's destruction (though he was eventually repaired). Scourge and Cyclonus did little of anything noteworthy after this.

Marvel Comics continuity
In a future timeline similar but different to that depicted in the animated continuity, set in 2006, rather than 2005, (2006 being the original date for the movie, amended to 2005 after the comics were penned) Scourge was also a creation of Unicron, presumably remade from the body of a dead or damaged Decepticon. Following Unicron's consumption of Cybertron's moons, Galvatron, Cyclonus and Scourge traveled back in time to 1986 as part of a plan to free themselves from Unicron's control by constructing a massive cannon that would destroy him upon their return to the future. The three Unicronian Decepticons proved themselves almost invincible in the face of the Autobots attacks, but were finally defeated when Galvatron was duped into believing he was trapped in a temporal paradox, and returned to his own time to live out the remaining events of 2006.

Following the destruction of Unicron at the hands of Rodimus Prime and the Matrix, Galvatron transported himself back in time to 1987, leaving Cyclonus and Scourge in the future, under Shockwave’s command. The duo were attacked by the freelance peace-keeping agent, Death's Head, who was seeking the bounty on Galvatron’s head, and Cyclonus revealed Galvatron’s whereabouts to him. Later, Shockwave hired Death’s Head to kill Rodimus Prime, but Cyclonus and Scourge interfered with the job as they sought to kill Rodimus first, in order to reclaim their lost standing amongst the Decepticons. This did not please Death’s Head, and consequently, he willingly accepted a contract from Rodimus to hunt down Cyclonus and Scourge, eventually tracking them down to the planet of Junk as 2008 dawned. Before he could finish the job, however, all three of them fell under the mind-controlling influence of Unicron, whose disembodied head had survived the destruction of his body and had landed on the planet, where he was having the native Junkions construct a new body for him.

Under Unicron's control, Cyclonus and Scourge killed Shockwave and became Decepticon leaders, reigniting the stalemated Cybertronian war to a furious degree to cover Unicron's actions. Death's Head, however, was able to fight the mind control and work with the Autobots' long enough to stop the chaos-bringer's plan. As explosions destroyed Unicron, Death's Head tackled Cyclonus and Scourge, pushing them through a time portal Unicron had built, promising to kill them another time. The two Decepticons were hurled into the past of Cybertron by the portal, where they came under the command of Scorponok.

Traveling to Nebulos with the rest of Scorponok's forces, they became Targetmasters and then traveled to present day (1988) Earth. Once there, they sought out Galvatron, and, no longer willing to serve him, instead demanded that he hand over his time travel device so that they could return to the future and their position as Decepticon leaders. The confrontation was disrupted by the sudden appearance of the Autobot commando squad, the Wreckers, who drew the ensuing battle away from the human settlement it was taking place in by professing to have stolen Galvatron's time jump mechanism, when in reality, the Decepticon no longer even had it for them to take.

Having met with failure again, Cyclonus and Scourge decided to cut their losses and team up with Shockwave's present-day Earth-based Decepticon forces. (At this point in time, the comic book personalities of Scourge and Cyclonus had been well-established, and distinctly different from the cartoon - here, Scourge was the intelligent, scheming brains of the duo, while Cyclonus was the dull-witted brawn, and that personality trait remained as strong as ever.)

Unfortunately, Cyclonus accidentally let slip that they would kill Shockwave in the future. Naturally wanting to ensure his continued existence, Shockwave unleashed a brainwashed Megatron clone upon the two. As Megatron killed Nightstick and grappled with Cyclonus, Scourge took aim at the clone...but stopped. He realized that killing Megatron in 1988 would likely prevent Galvatron's creation in 2006, and possibly his own as well. Unwilling to take the chance, he abandoned his comrade and fled.

Cyclonus and Scourge’s displacement into the past had circumvented the normal mass-replacement method used by time-travel, and had hence unbalanced the space-time continuum, causing a rift to appear in the fabric of space and time. Cyclonus' death, twenty years before he was even created, proved to be the final straw, accelerating the rift, which soon threatened to consume Earth and Cybertron. Realizing that the only way to stop it was to return himself, Galvatron and Cyclonus to their original time, Scourge attempted to recover Cyclonus’ body from Shockwave, only to be attacked by the deranged Decepticon, who had lost his mind due to the illogical nature of the situation, and had strung Cyclonus' remains up like a twisted trophy. Scourge staggered back to the time rift and allowed it to take him, hoping that that would have some effect on the situation. It didn't. Ravage, however, succeeded where Scourge had failed, and was able to bring Shockwave back sanity enough for him to deposit Cyclonus’ remains after Galvatron and Scourge, and then seal it with an x-ray blast. Scourge was not seen again after this, and it is unknown exactly what happened to Scourge after he entered the rift.

An alternate version of Scourge later made a brief appearance, inhabiting an alternate future world of 2009 where Cybertron had been destroyed and Galvatron ruled Earth.

Dreamwave comics continuity
Scourge, arriving on Cybertron, managed to reactivate Shockwave for the purpose of observing him, but Shockwave was soon attacked by Sharkticons. Scourge managed to destroying a number of Sharkticons and drive off the rest. As a way a saying thank you, Shockwave shot Scourge in the back, took him prisoner, disected him, and rebuilt the Unicronian Transformer.

Shockwave has a very weird sense of gratitude.

Dreamwave Armada comics
A version of Scourge from an unknown Generation 1 time line served as one of Unicron's heralds, along with versions of Thunderwing, Bludgeon, Dirge, and Galvatron. He was blown up when Jetfire detonated the Decepticon headquarters that they had taken over.

IDW Hearts of Steel continuity
Scourge appears as a blimp which drops bombs on the Autobot freight. Sideswipe pops his airbag, and he crashes, then explodes. Hearts of Steel issue 4

There is no sign of Galvatron or Unicron in the story, and thus Scourge's origin may be quite different from that in mainstream G1 continuities.
Blaster was a rather grim, brooding, rebellious loner and one of the best kickass fighters the Autobots had. He had a bit of a problem with authority and hated Decepticons with a passion due to the death of his former partner Scrounge. Originally part of Perceptor's Autobot resistance cell on Cybertron, he often disagreed with his superior's orders.

Shortly after Scrounge was killed, Blaster took part in an assault on Darkmount, where he engaged and seemingly destroyed the Decepticon commander Straxus, before using the Space Bridge to flee to Earth. The Bridge to Nowhere!

Upon arriving on Earth, Blaster was among the Autobots deactivated and disassembled by Circuit Breaker and RAAT. Heavy Traffic

He was later released and joined the other Earthbound Autobots at the Ark shortly before Optimus Prime's death. Blaster was one of the Autobots who voted for Grimlock to be the new Autobot leader, though he soon came to regret this decision. King of the Hill!

Blaster developed a reluctant friendship with Goldbug, whose more naturally upbeat personality provided the Boy Wonder to his Batman. After an encounter with the Mechanic, Blaster and Goldbug went AWOL from Grimlock's command, having grown tired of his aggressive orders and increasing mental instabilities. Mechanical Difficulties!

For this disobedience (and their failure to capture the Mechanic), Grimlock branded Blaster and Goldbug traitors and sent the Protectobots to hunt them down.
Imprisoned by Grimlock, Blaster was strapped to a Variable Voltage Harness as punishment for his desertion and disobedience. However, when Fortress Maximus and his Autobots arrived and Grimlock challenged him to a duel, Blaster took Fort Max's place. Their duel was interrupted by a Decepticon attack. When Blaster pointed out that their feud had put all Autobots in danger, Grimlock agreed to call their duel a draw and declared a truce with Blaster as they fended off the Decepticons side by side. Totalled!
While Blaster and Buster Witwicky's girlfriend Jessie failed to rescue the young boy from the Decepticon's island resort/base, they proved instrumental in discovering the upcoming arrival of the legendary Transformers database, the Underbase. Club Con! Like many other Transformers, Blaster was killed fighting the Underbase-powered Starscream, shot dead atop the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. Dark Star
Blaster appeared out of nowhere one day during Wheeljack's demonstration of the modifications he'd made to the Dinobots to improve their sense of balance and coordination, and to that end, Blaster was requested to play something "nice". For some reason, Blaster had trouble tuning into a station until Grimlock (obviously tired of this scene's padding) blasted fire at Blaster's controls, allowing the Autobot boombox to tune into the local Rock and Big Band Music Fusion station. Ironhide, Trailbreaker and Sidewipe showed their appreciation for the fine selection of elevator music by jerkily dancing around and claiming their audio sensors were being fried. Blaster continued to enthrall Grimlock until Slag and Sludge bumped into their leader and totally freaked him out. Dinobot Island, Part 1

His loud music often got him into trouble, especially when he jammed emergency frequencies with bad '80s hair metal. Blaster and Cosmos eventually converted a deserted Decepticon headquarters on Earth's moon into an Autobot base, though they were never shown using it. (It's possible the base they built was later used by Marissa Faireborn of the EDC.)

Blaster had a rivalry with the Decepticon tape deck, Soundwave. The two clashed frequently, though they were most often shown to be evenly matched. In 2005, when the Decepticons ransacked Autobot City, Soundwave attempted to jam Blaster's distress signal to Optimus Prime with his Cassette forces. Blaster countered with his own Cassette army, and the itty bitty guys 'rassled.

In 2006, Blaster was stationed most frequently at Autobot City on Earth. However, at one point in Transformer history best left forgotten, he traveled with the Autobots to another planet where he translated opera into English. Carnage in C Minor

Scramble City OVA
Blaster was finally gifted with some Cassette forces of his own to counter Soundwave's. Steeljaw and Ramhorn took on Ratbat but couldn't protect the secrets of Metroplex.

15 Go! Go!
As Teletraan 15 lay recuperating from her Galvatron-inflicted injuries, a voice came from a nearby boombox, remarking that the song in her heart sounded lonely.

Transforming into his towering robot mode, Blaster told 15 that a princess like her deserved a more cheerful song. After listening to her problems, he advised her not to worry about what she ought to do and suggested that she concentrate on doing what she loved best. He told her that as individuals, sentient beings are notes, and that together, they become music.

He handed her a small cassette tape and told her that whenever she was depressed, she should listen to music. She thanked him as he left.

Despite Blaster's good intentions, the tape turned out to be full of depressing music. It also turned out to be Steeljaw.15 Go! Go!

Kiss Players
Blaster hand-picked Rosanna to join his cassette team, feeling that she was the only Autobot who properly understood his love of music.

He was later appointed by Ultra Magnus as the Producer of the Kiss Players singing group, of which Rosanna became a founding member. Kiss Players (fiction)

Headmasters cartoon
Blaster's rivalry with Soundwave increased dramatically by the year 2011. At one point, when Hot Rod was searching Earth for the Matrix, he was ambushed by Soundwave. Blaster took on Soundwave alone, urging Rodimus to leave without him. Soundwave and Blaster then prepared for their final duel. The result was a tie, sorta—they both died.

Later, all the Autobots were content to leave Blaster as a corpse until Daniel and Blaster's cassette forces whined enough to have their pal resurrected. Rodimus then brought Blaster back online as the yellow and blue repaint Twincast. Coincidentally, the Decepticons reanimated Soundwave as the black-as-coal Soundblaster. The two arch-enemies then renewed their struggle.

After his revival, he also served as the Autobots' karaoke machine.
After Optimus Prime and Megatron forged the Cybertron Alliance, Twincast returned to his original form as Blaster for reasons unknown.

(The artwork by Hidetsugu Yoshioka for the single story page Blaster appeared in features all the characters in their Action Master bodies, implying Blaster may have become an Action Master as well.)
Dreamwave comics
Blaster and his partner Perceptor were co-leaders of an Autobot faction millions of years ago on Cybertron. While this faction may or may not have existed in the Dark Ages before Ultra Magnus unified the Autobots under his command, they were the only known resistance to Megatron's tyrannical rule during the Age of Internment that followed.

In modern times, Blaster allied himself with Hot Rod and Kup's underground resistance, opposing the new tyrannical rule of Shockwave.

Blaster seems to have a "thing" against tyrannical rules.

At one point, he remarked that he couldn't wait to go to Earth. Ironically, Dreamwave's bankruptcy meant he never got to go. Poor Blaster.
Trivia
* The pre-Transformers version of Blaster was actually a functioning AM radio. The Microchange release of the toy came with a microcassette-sized radio that plugged in to Radi-Casse Robo, which had internal wiring that allowed the radio to play through the speakers in its legs. The big hole in his Electro-Scrambler rifle is an earphone storage space, while the cord can be wrapped around the gun and the plug connects to the hole in the gun's stock. Despite popular belief, the compartment in the back of some Blaster toys was not a remnant of a battery compartment, but was actually storage for one of the transforming microcassettes, since a plug kept them from fitting in the cassette door. The battery compartment was actually in one of his legs.

* According to Grimlock on a Letters Page, Blaster's visor is retractable. He uses it to shield his especially delicate optical sensors from sunlight.

* The packaging for Twincast's e-Hobby reissue was the same generic Decepticon-scheme box used to package Magnificus. However, since Flip Sides is technically a Decepticon, it...sorta works.

* According to Blaster himself on the UK letters page, he has two siblings: Toaster and Karmen.

* According to the G1 Production Bible, Blaster's preliminary name was Blastbox.
The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 1 is the first part of the two-part season finale of Season 3 of the Generation 1 animated series.

Detailed synopsis
While on a deep-space mission to test a new heat- and radiation-resistant alloy that they have developed, scientists Jessica Morgan and Greggory Swafford detect a ship carrying Optimus Prime's body (see Dark Awakening) on a collision course with a planetoid orbitting a star they are researching nearby. Despite Greggory's reservations (his face was scarred in a previous scuffle between Optimus and Megatron, which he blames on Optimus), he is talked into helping Jessica rescue Prime's body before the ship collides with the planetoid, the impact of which also sets off the star into a supernova and coating their ship with unusual spores. Upon return to Earth, Jessica's father studies the spores and learns that they are not only alive, but are an incredibly contagious viral agent that induces hatred and destructive urges into whoever they contaminate. After a new scuffle between the Technobots and Terrorcons over the new alloy gravely injures Jessica, her father is convinced by Greggory to try and resurrect Prime's body as a carrier of the spores against the Autobots, a sentiment exacerbated when it's learned Jessica was paralyzed from the waist down in the accident and now needs a special exosuit to walk. However, when reviving Prime's body turns out to be impossible for them, Greggory and Jessica's father decide to use it as bait for the other Autobots, forcing Jessica into luring them into a spore trap at the lab.

The trap goes off without a hitch, mostly due to Rodimus' reckless haste in recovering his predecessor's corpse in lieu of caution, and several Autobots - including Superion and Defensor, two of the most powerful Autobot gestalts - are infected. However, the Decepticons had learned about Optimus Prime's recovery as well, and have shown up to terminate the once Autobot leader permanently, but are instead infected themselves. Fortunately, Rodimus, Jessica, and Galvatron manage to escape unharmed, the former two with Optimus' body; a few other Autobots manage to escape infection as well, but are badly wounded while attempting to subdue a sickened and crazed Superion. Back at Autobot City, Rodimus pleads to Wreck-Gar to try and repair Prime, but Prime is too far gone even for Junkion medical experience. Desperate, Rodimus contacts Sky Lynx and orders him to locate and bring back a Quintesson, remembering that they had once before restored Optimus to life, before disconnecting Metroplex, keeping the city-former from becoming infected. However, just as he finishes the final steps to do so, an infected Ultra Magnus appears and has a short chase with Rodimus before being temporarily subdued by Wreck-Gar...who ends up becoming infected, and infecting Rodimus in return, for his efforts.

Now, with the Hate Plague, as it's now called, rampaging even to the ends of the galaxy, Sky Lynx finds an uninfected Quintesson who he's able to convince to help revive Optimus, even though he warns that - should anything go too awry during the process - there's a good chance that Optimus will never live again. It's touch-and-go for a while, but eventually, the Quintesson manages to pull through and Optimus is restored to full life, declaring that "no force in the Universe can stop me."
Other notes
Animation and/or technical glitches
*When Rodimus is done talking to Optimus's statue, his head slides backwards. Twice.
*When Greggory and Jessica's father rush at the hospital and find the Autobots, Swindle is amongst them.
*When Soundwave looks down after having Ratbat inserted into him, his faceplate stays in its old position of looking upwards.
*Also pertaining to Soundwave, those wacky voice editors forgot to use the vocoder on his voice in this ep, again making him sound like Dr. Claw
*In one scene, Bruticus is the same size as all the regular Decepticons, or the regular Decepticons are the same size as Bruticus.
* Before entering the lab to retrieve Prime's body, Rodimus gives orders to Defensor...though Defensor is shown as the one making all of those orders.
*In the same scene as above, Goldbug is somehow right in front of Defensor, but Bumblebee wasn't rebuilt into him yet.

Continuity errors
*Optimus Prime's body is shown to be in perfect condition despite him having lost an arm and half of his face at the end of Dark Awakening. In addition, when his body is rescued, the ship is not being fired upon as it was shown to be previously.
*When Jessica Morgan asks who built Optimus Prime in the first place, Rodimus Prime responds by saying the Quintessons did so, yet Optimus was modified from Orion Pax who was repaired by Alpha Trion, though he might have meant who built him in his original form.

Transformers references
*References

Real-world references
*Wreck-Gar's lines: "I'm a doctor, not a forklift!" and "He's dead, Jim." Reference popular quotes from Star Trek medic Dr. Leonard H. McCoy.
**Similarly "His engines, they cannae take the strain!" comes from another Star Trek character, namely Montgomery Scott (AKA Scotty), though this is often claimed to not be attributed to the character except for its use in parodies.
*Wreck-Gar's comment: "I'm a pepper! Wouldn't you like to be a pepper, too?" is a reference to an old Dr. Pepper ad campaign in the late 70's to early 80's.
