Soundwave was a gladiator from [[Kaon]] who almost bested [[Megatron (Prime)|Megatron]] in combat, an act that created mutual respect between the two. Soundwave saw in Megatron a desire to return to the swashbuckling spirit of the [[Golden Age]] of Cybertron, when Cybertronians emerged from the [[Well of All Sparks]] having to escape from the [[Underworld]]'s monsters rather than being put into a [[caste system|caste]]. He was appointed Megatron's lieutenant with [[Shockwave (Prime)|Shockwave]]. Though Megatron despised Minicons, Soundwave insisted on having them around to spy on their gladiators, including the time when Megatron's librarian friend [[Optimus Prime (Prime)|Orion Pax]] came to visit. He was suspicious of Orion and even asked permission from Megatron to tail him as he returned to [[Iacon (city-state)|Iacon]].

After [[Decepticon]]s bombed Cybertron in Megatron's name, Soundwave sent [[Frenzy (Prime)|Frenzy]] and [[Rumble (Prime)|Rumble]] to search for the [[Matrix of Leadership]] in [[Crystal City]] (a place which design he always found self indulgent). Soundwave was not sure whether he should have bothered, as he was not superstitious and wondered what use a piece of a [[Star Saber (Prima)|broken sword]] could be. Instead he got chilling indications Crystal City's scientists were planning to revive [[Omega Supreme (Prime)|Omega Supreme]].

Soundwave attended Orion and Megatron's hearing before the [[Autobot High Council|High Council]]. During this meeting, Soundwave helped to sow discord and tension by loudly shouting his complaints over security breaches that, in truth, he himself had caused. The Council noted that they were aware someone had tried to find the Matrix, and they appointed Orion [[Prime (rank)|Prime]] and requested he find it. This tore Orion and Megatron's movement in two.

During the final days of the war, Soundwave and his minions' research changed the fate of Cybertron. It was they who found the areas of the [[DataNet]] that [[Alpha Trion (Prime)|Alpha Trion]] had overlooked and not deleted, revealing the existence of [[Dark Energon]] on [[Trypticon (Prime)|Trypticon]] Station. It was he who remembered the [[Geosynchronous Energon Bridge]] below Crystal City that allowed for the mass transportation of Dark Energon between Cybertron and Trypticon. And it was the evidence he got from Rumble and Frenzy when they infiltrated Crystal City that revealed the existence of the [[Plasma energy|Plasma Energy Chamber]] and its two [[Code Key]]s, which enabled Megatron to poison the [[Core]] of Cybertron.

Soundwave took control of the orbital station [[Starscream (Prime)|Starscream]] was posted at, helping [[Megatron (Prime)|Megatron]] to reach the [[Dark Energon]] by establishing a forward base within the station. He then directed Megatron to a Data Matrix Center in order to find a route to the Dark Energon that had not been blocked by Starscream.

Later, Soundwave notified Megatron that access to the core was impossible, as it was guarded by the Omega Gate. He and [[Breakdown (Prime)|Breakdown]] accompanied Megatron as they led the assault on [[Iacon (city-state)|Iacon]], through which they would find and take the [[Omega Key]], opening the Omega Gate and allowing the core to be infused with Dark Energon. On their way to the [[Stellar Galleries]], Soundwave reported [[sniper (WFC)|sniper]]s, and after taking them down, Megatron infused the entrance with Dark Energon and took his team into the security station. Soundwave noticed that the batteries fed the security grid, and the trio infused each of them with the Dark Energon source, deactivating the security measures. Soundwave then detected the Omega Key behind their next door, and after opening it, the Decepticons arrived at the Stellar Galleries. They opened the container, but found not a key, but a message from [[Sentinel Zeta Prime|Zeta Prime]], who announced that he had the Omega Key. Zeta sent Autobot attack forces that were swiftly taken down. Megatron ordered Soundwave to trace Zeta Prime's broadcast, and Soundwave found it came from 12.7 cycles ahead. He then noted a weak wall, and the Decepticons busted it down and lurked into the cities' subsystems, providing a direct route to Zeta, and the Omega Key.

The group descended down a shaft and went through a tunnel, avoiding trains on the way, and after breaking down a door in a ventilation area, they were ambushed by Autobot cloakers. Soundwave dispatched them and infused Dark Energon into the batteries. Megatron congratulated him, and then ordered him to unlock the exit. Soundwave obliged, and the trio found themselves in another tunnel. Breakdown challenged Soundwave to a race, to which the monotone Decepticon responded with a cold "Negative." Tough crowd. Rushing through the tunnel, this time full of moving trains, the group came to a station where they infiltrated Iacon's lower levels. Soundwave detected the Omega Key at last, and suggested proceeding through the logistics station. Roughing it through the Autobot attackers, finally Soundwave determined that the key was beyond the train tunnels.

Soundwave and his teammates arrived at Iacon's main streets, where they met up with [[Brawl (Prime)|Brawl]] outside of Zeta Prime's vaults. Helping him clear the area, Brawl called in the Dark Energon bombers, but they were spectacularly shot down in flames. Brawl suggested disabling the anti-aircraft guns, and Soundwave assisted in carrying out the plan. Autobots intercepted all around, but Soundwave and the others had to hold them off until the next wave of bombers arrived. When they did, the street and the vault doors were cleared, and Soundwave joined the others on their way to the entrance, the squad was intercepted by a [[Destroyer]], and Soundwave split from the others to flank him, and eventually rendered him non-functional. Inside the vault, they avoided Zeta's traps and finally reached the Omega Key, but it too was a trap. Zeta then attacked them, using a giant hologram and controlling the chamber to his advantage, mashing and sending holographic brutes to attack for him. After a huge battle ensued, Zeta's machine was destroyed thanks to Soundwave noticing the core's weakness, and Megatron took the key from Zeta's chest. But, Zeta Prime informed them that the "key" he had was actually a device that activated the real key: [[Omega Supreme (Prime)|Omega Supreme]].

As the three Decepticons flew away to track Omega, Soundwave noticed that the "key" was coming for them. Omega Supreme attacked and thrust the Decepticons' ship into a wall. Crash-landing, Megatron had a change of plans; force Omega Supreme to open the Omega Gate. Soundwave noticed a Decepticon drop ship across the bridge, but when the squad went to investigate, Omega Supreme intercepted them. Soundwave reported that his weapons were ineffective, but Megatron told his soldiers to destroy the bridge supports, causing Omega Supreme to plunge. But he survived and in vehicle mode, forced the Decepticons to retreat inside. In a frenzy, Breakdown noted that the door was locked, and Soundwave proposed that Dark Energon could open the door, which it did. Inside, Soundwave picked up a transmission from Starscream, who announced that he would be replacing the "deceased" Megatron as Decepticon leader. Enraged, Megatron threatened Starscream, but Soundwave informed his leader that communication to the surface had been cut off, and that he was cursing him out for no reason.

The trio arrived at the lift, but found it to be locked down. Breaking the locks got the lift back to working condition, but on their way up, Omega Supreme returned and blasted it, forcing the Decepticons down the shaft at breakneck speed. Omega was still out there, so the locks' destruction was the Decepticons' only hope. At the bottom, they continued, but Omega Supreme wouldn't quit! He grabbed the Decepticons, but Soundwave helped out in shooting Omega Supreme's hand, relinquishing the three from his grasp. They retreated inside a fortified Autobot position, and in order to prevent detection, Soundwave jammed their signals. Slaying the Autobots inside who dared attempt to attack their foes, Soundwave unlocked the exit, which only let in more Autobots. They too, met their demise, but as Soundwave and his comrades escaped, he noticed that the Autobots' security was countering the effects of Dark Energon. Destroying the sentries turned to be a worthwhile solution, but the Decepticons had to deal with Omega Supreme and his mines. Soundwave's sensors indicated the presence of a bridge nearby, and though Breakdown was unsure, Megatron was willing to follow Soundwave's help. Once again, Omega Supreme continued to stalk, but Soundwave led his group to an alternate route... a dead end, to be precise. But Soundwave revealed that breaking a doorway nearby took them to Iacon maintenance tunnels leading straight to the bridge terminal. When they arrived through the power conduits, Soundwave fought through more Autobots and finally activated the bridge.

Racing across the bridge, they barely avoided Omega Supreme's pursuit, and Soundwave located another cargo lift that would transport them straight to the heavy ion turrets, and on the lift he found several Autobot/Decepticon signals, a sign they were approaching the battle on the surface. Soundwave participated in the slugfest, and his analysis proved that the turrets nearby had enough firepower to legitimately damage Omega Supreme. Then, he showed no mercy using the turrets to breach Omega's armour and finally topple him to the ground below.

Soundwave, Breakdown, and Megatron followed Omega, and at the bottom, they were surprised to see him survive and transform into his mighty robot mode. Soundwave noted that the batteries were the source of Omega's health, and gave his amigos hints on Omega's weaknesses; avoiding his tractor beams would allow them to live, and his turrets were vulnerable, making them the prime target. When the turrets were blown, Soundwave saw that the batteries were being used to repair them, and so it became an objective to corrupt them with Dark Energon. When Omega Supreme used the batteries to heal himself, he was instead weakened, allowing the Decepticons to critically injure him. Omega Supreme was still alive, however, but much weaker. Soundwave observed a weak chest and Megatron ordered Soundwave and Breakdown to blast it, and Omega Supreme fell at last. Soundwave told Megatron that now would be a good time to corrupt Omega with Dark Energon, but Megatron shut him up for stating the obvious and did it himself, laughing all the way.

After Cybertron had been infected, Soundwave was posted as head of [[Kaon]]'s prison, and watched over Zeta's body. [[Optimus Prime (Prime)|Optimus]], [[Bumblebee (Prime)|Bumblebee]], [[Sideswipe (Prime)|Sideswipe]] and [[Air Raid (Prime)|Air Raid]] led an Autobot breakout and battled Soundwave's minions [[Frenzy (Prime)|Frenzy]], [[Rumble (Prime)|Rumble]] and [[Laserbeak (Prime)|Laserbeak]]. Soundwave himself sustained heavy damage leaving his post to revive and retrieve each Minicon. Eventually, defeated and critically damaged, Soundwave desperately attempted to restore himself by absorbing life force from Zeta's very own spark. His attempt to fully heal was halted by Optimus, who even took a shot from the Decepticon intended to finish off Prime. [[Unicron]] created the Mini-Cons to be mindless tools, sent to [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] as an agitating element to the Transformers' civil war. The power-enhancing "smart tools" would be unleashed upon the populace, who would snap them up and bond with them, and the war would only get more destructive, as Unicron drank in the negative psychic energies from the death and destruction. Once he'd gathered the power he needed, the Mini-Cons would turn on their supposed masters, incapacitating them, and Unicron would fully awaken to devour the planet and all Transformers on it, eliminating his biggest obstacle to devouring all of existence.

But through a strange warp in space and time that no one really bothered to explain, three [[human]] children from the future—[[Rad White|Rad]], [[Carlos Lopez|Carlos]] and [[Alexis Thi Dang|Alexis]]—were sent to the Mini-Cons' birthing chamber on Cybertron just seconds before the small robots emerged from their pods. As the Mini-Cons had been designed to form mental bonds with other life forms, when Rad touched the Mini-Con who he knew from the future as [[High Wire (Armada)|High Wire]], High Wire apparently formed his bond then, with Rad... and through the Mini-Cons' shared "soul dimension", the [[Linkage (dimension)|Linkage]], sentience and free will spread throughout the Mini-Cons, forming "souls", and crippling Unicron's plans drastically.

Mini-Cons are a second race of Transformer, mostly living in designated sectors by themselves, which left them open to attack when [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron]] led his Decepticons on capture raids. Through experimentation on prisoners, the Decepticons discovered the Mini-Cons were rewired, their power (disproportionate to their size) could be added to a Transformer through [[Powerlinx]]ing. Mini-Cons are also capable of tapping an extra-dimensional energy source of unknown origin, but are wary of doing this, and most have inhibitors installed to prevent this from happening.

[[Over-Run (Armada)|Over-Run]], a Mini-Con refugee from another dimension, led Cybertron's collected Mini-Cons in tapping that dimension's energies and channeling them into an attack on Unicron which left him stranded on the far fringes of space.

After Unicron's defeat, most Mini-Cons re-established their villages in the Mini-Con sector. When Unicron reappeared ten years later, no one went to fetch the Mini-Cons to battle Unicron again, so it seems likely the Mini-Cons' connection to their extra-dimensional power source was severed.

====Powerlinx and Evolution====
Mini-Cons have the special ability to actually evolve other machines, from transforming simple cars into jet-powered assault vehicles, to upgrading Transformers to have new weapons spring from their body. The nature of Powerlinxing is emphasized more in the Japanese ''[[Armada (franchise)|Micron Legend]]'' counterpart to Transformers ''[[Armada (franchise)|Armada]]''. Once powerlinked, the Autobot would call out "EVOLUTION!" and a portion of their body would literally reconfigure to become a new weapon. Afterwards, they retained this new ability without the powerlinking of the Mini-Con which granted it. Linking to that Mini-Con again simply enhances their firepower. The Mini-Con is not required in order to use the evolved weaponry afterwards. This has caused some confusion in the Armada viewing audience due to dub issues and the downplaying of the "Evolution" theme. Despite this, the term is used twice in the American series by Megatron.

====Gigantion Mini-Cons====
The exact origin of the Gigantion Mini-Cons is questionable as presented within the context of the show itself. The show offers little to nothing on their genesis, merely their function as "little detail" workers whose brains developed similarly to human children because of this (uh, yeah). [[Snarl (Cybertron)|Snarl]] speculated that they evolved a small stature to adapt to Gigantion like he adapted to the [[Jungle Planet (Cybertron)|Jungle Planet]]. In ''Galaxy Force'', they are stated to have existed since ancient times and controlled the larger Transformers. There are even ancient ruins discovered with inscriptions using ''Armada'' Mini-Con model sheets.

The [[Fun Publications]] fiction has linked these Mini-Cons to those of ''Armada'', which simply has them migrating to Gigantion (as well as the other colony worlds) with the Transformers carrying the [[Cyber Planet Key]]s, offering the only definitive origin of those Mini-Cons. This would also make them creations of Unicron. However, this does not fully line up with the fiction, as the Mini-Cons in Armada are shown appearing in the time of Optimus Prime, years after the world colonization—so the matter is left more than a bit vague.

:Mini-Con toys debuted as the signature element of the ''Armada'' franchise, bringing the "micro [[play pattern]]" back to ''Transformers'' after many years' absence. Much like ''Armada'' itself, the Mini-Cons proved to be a smash hit with fans and kids, and Hasbro scrambled to include them in the subsequent franchises.

:Most Mini-Cons stand around 2" tall, roughly the same size as their [[Micromaster]] predecessors. Most Mini-Cons are considerably more complex, as well; unlike Micromasters, there's no single dominant transformation scheme. With dozens of molds, Mini-Cons cover a wide range of articulation, size, alternate modes, and complexity. Aesthetically, their facial designs tend toward the unorthodox.

What happened next depends on who you believe: Octane tells a tale of great heroism, where he came across the weakened and dying Trypticon and, for the glory of the [[Decepticon Empire]] and out of the good of his own heart, nursed the injured giant back to health. The rest of the world prefer to take a less charitable look at his actions, and claim that Octane merely took advantage of Trypticon to secure himself a source of high-quality energon from the [[Socialist Democratic Federated Republic of Carbombya]]. Whatever his motivation, it was not long before Octane and Trypticon were trading fuel for protection (even going so far as to assault passing cruise ships and then claiming they had been invading sovereign waters, though Trypticon did genuinely believe that they were invading ships). When that was no longer enough to keep their new landlords happy, Octane quickly came up with a scheme to use Trypticon in stealing all of the world's most important monuments and presenting them as gifts to the nation's leader. That got the attention of Rodimus Prime and the rest of the Autobots, who quickly crashed Octane's party. Worse, [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]] caught wind of what had been happening, and was not amused with how selfishly Octane had been keeping Trypticon to himself. All the wheeling and dealing in the world failed in the face of Galvatron's rage, and Octane soon found himself ousted from the Decepticons (a fate he shared with his fellow Triple Changer, [[Blitzwing (G1)|Blitzwing]]. The Decepticon leader had placed a price on Octane's head, and countless bounty hunters and assassins were closing in on him. After a close call on the planet [[Junkion (planet)|Junk]], where he narrowly avoided being blown to pieces, Octane quickly decided to seek asylum with the Autobots. It was here that he met and befriended [[Sandstorm (G1)|Sandstorm]], a fellow Triple Changer who had recently joined the Autobots after the destruction of his home planet of [[Paradron]]. After being attacked by the [[Combaticon (G1)|Combaticons]] at [[Autobot City]], the pair fled to a space station, where they were assaulted once again by a paid assassin (who was fortunately so incompetent that the two robots barely noticed he was there). Eventually settling on [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], Octane still found no peace, as [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]] and the [[Sweep]]s tracked him down yet again. Fleeing into the forgotten [[Decepticon Crypt]], Octane stumbled onto the ghost of the most famous Decepticon traitor ever known: [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]]. The trio forced Cosmos to lead them to the planet. There, they entered a cave, though Octane wasn't terribly keen on the prospect. His worries proved well founded, as a few minutes later, he was seized by tentacles and dragged into a pool. He traveled to Earth in 2003 under Shockwave and [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]]' command to collect the "renegade" Autobots and Decepticons who were still fighting the Great War. {{storylink|New World Order}} They returned to Cybertron, and Octane assumed patrol duty until coming across the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobots]], who had just crash-landed after arriving from Earth. Sensing weakness, Octane mockingly challenged the woozy travelers, poking them and calling them "primitive".

Four million years ago, Tankor was involved in the Decepticon war effort. He was part of a convoy carrying 75 tons of energon for [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]]. Unfortunately, they were intercepted by [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] and their scout, [[Ramjet (G1)|Ramjet]], knocked senseless before he could fire off a shot. Prime and [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]] managed to capture Tankor's unit without incident by threatening to detonate the unstable energon supply they were carrying. {{storylink|The Iron Age}}

Millions of years later, during the Decepticon siege of (parts of) the world, the [[European Union]] sent a nuclear bomb to wipe out the Transformer infestation of [[New York City]]. Unfortunately the plane they sent to carry the bomb was Tankor in disguise. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 11}} Even after the Autobots arrived, Megatron ordered Tankor to proceed with the bomb drop and to rendezvous with the Decepticons later, to which he expressed his pleasure. The bomb was indeed dropped, but diverted by Thundercracker. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 12}}

Unfortunately, Tankor never made it off Earth. After getting captured by humans at some point, he was liberated by a small group of Decepticons led by [[Swindle (G1)|Swindle]]. {{storylink|New Arrivals, Old Encounters}} Their ragtag team then located [[Thundercracker (G1)|Thundercracker]] in the ruins of New York, and added him to the group. {{storylink|Seasons in Flight}} During an attack on [[Omega Supreme (G1)|Omega Supreme]], Swindle starting questioning why they were fighting in the first place. Tankor replied "Because they're Autobots!", but it turned out Swindle was looking for a somewhat deeper answer. The Decepticons subsequently allied themselves with [[Hot Rod (G1)|Hot Rod]]'s defected Autobots, working together to find a way off the planet. {{storylink|New Arrivals, Old Encounters}} Tankor was next seen assisting [[Bluestreak|Silverstreak]] in the construction of a spaceship. {{storylink|Seasons in Flight}}

After successfully conducting an energon theft, Octane gave his pursuers, [[Sideswipe (G1)#Henkei! Henkei! pack-in comics|Sideswipe]] and [[Bluestreak#Henkei! Henkei! pack-in comics|Bluestreak]], the runaround by switching back and forth between his alternate modes, making them think they were chasing two culprits instead of one. Once he got bored with the chase, Octane revealed himself, but that proved to be a bad idea, as Sideswipe was able to rocket above him and shoot him down. {{storylink|Henkei! Henkei! volume 6|Henkei! Octane's skills were later to put to the test by [[Cyclonus (G1)#Henkei! Henkei! pack-in comics|Cyclonus]], who tasked him with stealing energon from a factory. Octane upped the stakes, promising to do the job in thirty minutes if Cyclonus would deliver a good report on him to [[Megatron (G1)#Henkei! Henkei! pack-in comics|Megatron]]. Despite the interference of [[Smokescreen (G1)#Henkei! Henkei! pack-in comics|Smokescreen]] and [[Red Alert (G1)#Henkei! Henkei! pack-in comics|Red Alert]], Cyclonus held Octane to the conditions of the deal, and Octane had to try and shake the two Autobots off as he headed for the factory. Octane thought he had succeeded, but found his two opponents waiting for him at the factory, along with Cyclonus, who announced his time was up. Octane had the misfortune of being possessed by the ghost of a [[Starscream (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Starscream from another dimension]] and being forced to attack the Autobots. He beat up on [[Ironhide (G1)#Henkei! Henkei! pack-in comics|Ironhide]], before being taken down by the invisible [[Mirage (G1)#Henkei! Henkei! pack-in comics|Mirage]]. His ground vehicle mode is an extended truck cab with fuel-tanker trailer of undetermined model, with much of the detailing in this mode achieved through stickers rather than sculpting. His truck mode has rather strange proportions due to the robot arms sticking out of the sides and the generally broken-up look of the truck. He has three sets of rolling wheels: two purple sets and a set of grey wheels hidden under the middle of the truck. There is also a set of sculpted, non-rolling, unpainted wheels at the back of the truck

:His aerial mode is a two-engined variant of the Boeing 747 jet plane. Though the better of the two vehicle modes, it has some odd concessions that were made due to Octane being a Triple Changer, such as the grey set of wheels from the middle of the truck now sticking up from the top of Octane's fuselage.
