:Black Shadow is a Decepticon Crossformer from the Generation 1 continuity family.

Hailing from somewhere beyond the Milky Way galaxy, Black Shadow (ブラックシャドー Burakku Shadō) is a vile gangster whose skills in robbery, extortion and murder are available to anyone who can meet his price. He is loyal only to the highest bidder; even the Decepticons are loath to work with him that often, as they can never be sure he won't betray them in mid-job if he gets a better offer. In jet mode, he can devastate buildings around him with powerful sonic shockwaves by breaking the sound barrier while flying at low altitudes, a technique he calls his "Sonic Boomer Attack".

His partner in crime is Blue Bacchus, a gunman with a similar personality and moral fiber who looks up to him. The pair's partnership has made them infamous throughout space, and there is a massive bounty on their heads, but Black Shadow would actually kill Blue Bacchus without remorse if the situation demanded it.

He is also known as Sky Shadow.

Black Shadow and his partner, Blue Bacchus, were hired by Hellbat of the Breastforce to help him loot Planet Micro of all its energon. While the Crossformers caused massive panic and destruction, Hellbat got a clear run at the energy reserves. The incredible size and power of the Crossformers, especially on a world full of Micromasters, made their mission relatively easy, until Governor Riker called in Star Saber to help. When the Autobot commander arrived to stop the villains during their attack on the plasma energy plant that provided Micro with a third of all its energy, Black Shadow informed Hellbat that he would need to triple their pay for them to risk their hides in battle with the legendary Star Saber. Hellbat grudgingly agreed, but before the two Crossformers could attack Star Saber, they themselves were attacked by Saber's ally, their former partner in crime, Greatshot, who had reformed and joined the Autobots. At first, the pair seemed to have the six-changer on the ropes, until he used his "Disappearing Dust" technique to get the drop on them and destroy their guns. The pair proved to be no match for Greatshot with their bladed weapons, and he destroyed their outer shells, forcing them to retreat in their small vehicle modes, vowing revenge. Hellbat joined them in retreat, without any energy to show for his trouble, but the Crossformers insisted that he would still be paying them. Planet Micro - The Mysterious Warrior

Black Shadow was a resident of Axiom Nexus, performing manual labor for Cryotek at The Blue Deployer and... other work as came up from time to time. When Gutcruncher started stirring up the Offworlder population for a revolt against the TransTechs, Black Shadow was hired to eliminate the rabble-rouser. At Gutcruncher's rally, Black Shadow assassinated the mech with a photon charge through the central cortex, killing him instantly. Also, thanks to his stealth field and deliberate positioning, he was able to frame two newly arrived Autobots named Jackpot and Hubcap for the murder.

Black Shadow monitored the patsies to make sure they didn't implicate him somehow, and he was overjoyed when they "showed" their guilt by escaping from the police. Taking advantage of the situation, Black Shadow planned to execute the duo to cover his tracks and collect on the bounty Gutcruncher's pals had taken out on the "assassins". He gloated openly about his schemes to the two Autobots, until they split up and scampered, hoping he couldn't follow them both. Well, he could—Black Shadow split from his Crossformer shell and took off after both Autobots. However, Hubcap ultimately outsmarted the Decepticon. The little Autobot used his speakers to draw as much attention as possible to their chase. Then, when Gutcruncher's flunky Dirge and a pack of Malignus Revolutionaries responded, Hubcap played back a recording of Black Shadow's gloating admission of the crime for all to hear. One more fancy bit of wordplay tricked the Crossformer into admitting his photon charges killed Gutcruncher, and the verdict was in. The Malignus Revolutionary Army and their Gigantion buddy Menasor ended Black Shadow's existence very quickly. At the same time, a mysterious capsule of Scraplet digestive acid went off in Black Shadow's shell, saving Jackpot's life and preventing any information from being recovered from the shell's CPU. Black Shadow's own head (and therefore his datatrax) also went missing in the melee after his death... almost as if someone was covering their tracks... Gone Too Far

He was later mentioned by Cryotek when he was questioned by Cheetor about Comet, saying that he "couldn't give him Black Shadow's old job in the loading docks."
Long ago, Megatron called three of his most deadly warriors to him, intent on making them his "phase sixers". Black Shadow and Sixshot were the first two, and Overlord, who teleconferenced holographically while in the middle of a battle on Caldoon 4, was the third. Though Black Shadow and Sixshot were excited to serve the Decepticons in this expanded capacity, Overlord chafed. Last Stand of the Wreckers issue 2
Black Shadow battled the Wreckers, killing three of them and dismembering their leader Hyperion. When facing the 113th Battalion, he killed 3,003 Autobots and bested Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus. He also single-handedly murdered three billion inhabitants of Rigel IV. However loyal Black Shadow was to the Decepticon cause, he was more loyal to wealth, and he accepted half a billion Shanix from the Autobots to turn on the Decepticons' fleet of War Worlds. Rules of Disengagement
: Part of the final Generations wave in 2011 (alongside Junkheap), "Sky Shadow" is a retool of Thunderwing, featuring a new head and chest piece based on the Victory cartoon's design. He transforms into a fighter jet loosely based on an F-22 Raptor but with different wings, yet retaining the F-22's characteristic zigzag "stealth" patterns. The nose of the jet can detach and become a separate aerial drone, while the two missile launchers can detach from the wings and become hand-held weapons or clip together into one massive gun. The middle sections of the sculpted missiles on the sides of the guns are also compatible with C joint accessories.

: Sky Shadow was originally "leaked" via Thunderwing's instructions, as they initially depicted him with Sky Shadow's head and chest. A running change version of the instructions depicts Thunderwing's own head, but keeps Sky Shadow's chest unchanged.
* In Japanese, Black Shadow's function reads "Uchū Gyangu" (宇宙ギャング), which translates to "Space Gangster". The common misconception that he is a member of the "Space Mafia" is due to a mistranslation some years ago in which "gangster" was interpreted as "Mafia". Big difference.
* The Crossformers' ID numbers are actually a huge jump backwards in the numbering system. The other Victory Decepticons' numbers start at D-322. However, Shadow and Bacchus' numbers put them right in the middle of the Super-God Masterforce Decepticons' numbers, between 1988's Browning and BlackZarak, even though the Crossformers were released in 1989. What the hell?
* While "Sky Shadow" is the name of the Generations figure on its card and elsewhere, Walmart's product database listed the figure as "BLCKSHAD" and printed as such on the receipt.
A Sparkeater was kept contained in the Lost Light by its original NAIL owners. It was kept docile by turbofox meals. Liars, A to D Part 3: The Chaos of Warm Things

Denied the help of Omega Supreme, Rodimus bought the Lost Light to find the Knights of Cybertron, a group from Cybertron's ancient past. He intended on following a map discovered in the halves of the now empty Matrix of Leadership by Perceptor and Rewind, hoping that the knowledge and power of the Knights could be used to bring Cybertron into a new golden age. Rodimus gave a rousing speech on the day prior to the launch, intending on swaying the varied Transformers currently inhabiting and feuding on Cybertron to accompany him. While Prowl predicted Rodimus would fail to convince anyone to leave with him, at least 200 answered the call. After being checked and cleared by a diligent Red Alert, the passengers boarded the Lost Light, along with a "weapon of mass destruction" brought on board by Ratchet, an unconscious and crippled Tailgate, and mysterious cargo smuggled aboard on Prowl's orders.

The ship launched on schedule, but something went wrong. As the Lost Light lifted off, it was rocked by an explosion and quantum jumped before it was ready. The jump placed the Lost Light over an unknown planet somewhere in space and caused one of the rear thrusters to explode, resulting in a fire and a hull tear in one of the hangars on the upper decks. Before the tear could be sealed, 40 Autobots were ejected through the breach. Rodimus ordered the Lost Light to be set down on the planet's surface so the lost Autobots could be recovered. Liars, A to D Part 1: How to Say Goodbye and Mean It Perceptor and Brainstorm found that the reason for the explosion was that Ore had been standing close to one of the quantum generators when they were activated, and was mashed into it. By the time the rescue mission was done and the Lost Light left the planet, Skids joined the crew while Hyperion and Polaris had been found dead. Liars, A to D Part 2: Hangers On

The Sparkeater that none of the Autobots knew of broke out during their journey, killing Shock and Animus before going on a hunt for the "brightest spark" on the ship: Rung. Rodimus had the rest of the crew locked in their quarters and lured the Sparkeater to the engine room, where he mashed it into a generator when the Lost Light did its next quantum jump. Liars, A to D Part 3: The Chaos of Warm Things

The crew then had a celebration at Swerve's recently opened bar and Rodimus ordered Rewind to give Tailgate a history lesson about the Great War.Life After the Big Bang

Ultra Magnus would later teach Tailgate the Autobot Code while Ratchet, Drift, and Pipes investigated on significant life declining in Delphi. Meanwhile, Red Alert told Rung he was hearing noises below his room in the Sparkeater chamber that was vaguely recognized as "me...kill" over and over again. Later on, Ratchet and his comrades returned with new crew members. How Ratchet Got His Hands Back

When informed, Orion Pax thought even with the Lost Light's "destruction", Rodimus and his crew were still alive. Syndromica (1)

Liars, A to D Part 2: Hangers On
Rodimus had the rest of the crew locked in their quarters and lured the Sparkeater to the engine room, where he mashed it into a generator when the Lost Light did its next quantum jump. Liars, A to D Part 3: The Chaos of Warm Things
A Diagnostic Drone is a type of autonomous drone which generally assists Transformers in performing administrative or technical tasks. They have some measure of artificial intelligence and are small, roughly ovoid devices with one visual sensor, two clawed arms, and two "wings". They can hover or fly. Diagnostic Drones are explicitly depicted as sparkless. Several have been shown to have the ability to speak and use advanced experimental technology, but only one is known to have had apparent emotions and a sense of humor; that unit was either a true artificial intelligence, or a very good simulation of one.
Diagnostic Drones were used by Megatron during his tenure as ruler of Cybertron. One drone in particular served as Megatron's right-hand man until it was reprogrammed by the reawakened Rhinox. This drone displayed a seemingly full range of emotions, although its ability to make decisions was handicapped in some ways by its programming. Despite this nearly full sentience, it was explicitly stated to have no spark.

Near the end of Megatron's rule, after his spark was de- and repolarized, his spark became stuck in a Diagnostic Drone for a time.
As the alien machine begins destroying the planet's energon, Optimus devises a desperate plan to destroy the device.

Synopsis
Out on patrol, Cheetor and Tigatron stare in awe at "the light at the end of the world", as the alien machine continues powering up in space. Optimus Primal makes contact and orders them to return to base. Rattrap is pessimistic about their chances of survival, but Primal assures him that Rhinox will find a way for them to survive.

The alien bungalow finishes transferring power to the moon, and in a flash, the aliens depart: "Termination sequence engaged. Return to Nexus Zero."

Megatron and the Predacons observe this from their base. Confronted with a machine intended to destroy them, Megatron activates a special program and scans the Maximal base, locating the spiders and Inferno within.

Tarantulas is nearly finished converting a stored stasis pod into his escape ship. Blackarachnia observes that it's a little cramped for two... but, weapon drawn, she has no intention of sharing the ride. Inferno arrives just then, blasts her, and sets Tarantulas on fire, knocking him out. Back at the Predacon base, Megatron detects the aborted flow of data to the stasis pod ship and reacts with fury.

Inferno starts to examine Tarantulas's work, but is attacked by Blackarachnia, who eludes him with a display of gymnastics before blasting him with his own gun. Picking up Tarantulas's cyber-link goggles, she forms a link with the unconscious Tarantulas to obtain the data needed to finish the pod ship—but finds that staring into the abyss of the spider's mind means that it also stares back...

The Maximals arrive at base, alarmed to find the shields down. Inside, they find Rhinox and Dinobot cyber-webbed to the ceiling. Optimus Primal sends Rattrap and Airazor to bring in their unwelcome visitors.

Megatron observes the data flow resuming, just as the altered moon opens fire on the planet with a broad, blinding power ray. Optimus Primal charges the Maximal base's shields as the external temperature begins climbing and deduces that the aliens intend to ignite the energon deposits. Megatron notes that this will obliterate the entire planet, an incredibly ruthless strategy that he rather admires. He assures his panicked troops that Tarantulas will save them, albeit inadvertently.

Blackarachnia finishes the pod ship, only to be discovered and held at gunpoint by Rattrap and Airazor. With Rhinox still out of commission, Optimus Primal is beginning to despair, when Rattrap summons him to the stasis hold. Primal is impressed by the ship and immediately orders Blackarachnia to change the command codes to respond to him. He intends to fly the ship up to the Planet Buster and detonate the transwarp cell to destroy it. With little alternative, Blackarachnia complies.

Soon all is ready, and Optimus Primal has poignant parting words with his worried crew before sealing the ship and launching it. Megatron scans the launch and notes with delight that Primal is flying the vessel. Primal soon reaches the Planet Buster, starts the ignition sequence, and gives the order to blow the hatch seals. But the hatch is sealed and locked! Megatron appears on his comm screen to gloat that he'd come up with the exact same plan—only in his version of events, the ship's pilot goes "up with the ship". As the timer counts down to zero, the Maximals frantically wait for Optimus Primal to make his escape. Primal pounds on the sealed hatch, to no avail. As the Maximals wonder what is going on, Blackarachnia tells them it's too late... in Tarantulas's voice.

The transwarp cell explodes, and high above the planet, the Planet Buster is annihilated... along with the pod ship and Optimus Primal.
Notes
Animation and technical errors
* When Blackarachnia grabs Inferno's gun, she clips into Inferno for a spit second.
* During Airazor and Rattrap's search for Blackarachnia, Airazor's gun floats in her hand when they jump into a hallway, and then gets "stuck" in her armpit as they walk towards the camera. Meawhile, her hands are posed grasping at nothing.
* As Optimus Primal lies back into the stasis pod, his shoulder pads are much smaller than they usually are. This was done to avoid clipping with the sides of the cramped stasis post model. It is an odd animation choice, however, given that simply folding his shoulder pads down is a normal part of his transformation, in much the same way he actually does do with his feet to allow the pod's canopy to close.
* When Megatron gloats to Optimus at the end of the episode, his hands seem to be switched, with his right arm ending in a normal hand instead of his beast-mode head. (It's easiest to see when Megatron is laughing triumphantly at the end of his speech.)

Continuity errors
* How exactly did anything organic survive the heating of the entire planet?
* When Blackarachia and Tarantulas attacked Dinobot in the previous episode, they caused him to fall through the glass of the elevator on the right hand side of the Axalons command center (from Dinobot's perspective). In this episode, the smashed elevator glass has been switched to the other elevator on the other side of the room.
* The piece of cyber-webbing Airazor steps on when she exits the elevator was not present during the close up of Rattrap as he complained about the missing Rhinox and Dinobot.

Transformers references
*Megatron's line, "You Optimuses do enjoy sacrificing yourselves", is a reference to the original Optimus Prime and his numerous deaths.
*When Tigatron volunteers to pilot the stasis pod ship, he says, "I owe this world." This may refer to his grief over what happened in "Law of the Jungle". It may also refer to his decision to destroy the Vok's floating-island in "The Trigger, Part 2".
Trivia
* At the script stage, this episode had the subtitle "Termination Day".
* When Tarantulas angrily dismisses Blackarachnia while attempting to work on the stasis pod, he is voiced by Scott McNeil (doing an impression of Alec Willows's Tarantulas) for two lines.
* This episode is the first of two where Inferno refers to Megatron by name rather than as "Royalty" or "my queen."
* A planned but never-produced Generation 1 cameo was planned for "Other Voices" Part 2. The intent was for Megatron to gloat to Primal while the latter was trapped in the stasis pod—by projecting an image of the Autobot leader, Optimus Prime, on Primal's viewscreen as Primal raced for the false moon and met his demise.
*When you see the little parts of Primal flying towards the camera near the end of the episode, you can see Optimus's head fly at the screen very quickly with a distressed look on his face.
* In Madman Entertainment's Beast Wars Season 1 DVD set, on a commentary track for this episode with fan consultant Ben Yee and story editor Larry DiTillio, fellow story editor Bob Forward popped in to explain the significance of the slang term "slag". He explained that he looked up on refineries as he figured that robots would be made of steel, and one of the waste byproducts of creating steel was an unusable detritus called slag, which he thought would be an appropriate swear word for robots to use.
* Why couldn't Optimus just blast his way out instead of pounding the hatch? Firing his weapons might have damaged himself, but at that point it was better than the alternative.
* If one listens closely, just as the pod is entering the false moon, you can actually hear the sound of Optimus' arm-cannon firing, and glass shattering. It appears that he attempted to do just that, but too late to actually escape.
* Inferno's got the moves in this episode! During his fight with Blackarachnia he pulls off all sorts of kung fu moves and even does a little Jet Li roundhouse kick. This still surprisingly doesn't keep her from blowing his head off though.
