: Grimlock's toy was originally part of Takara's Diaclone Dinosaur Robo series. When Hasbro imported the toy in 1985 for the Transformers line, its blue pelvis was changed to red and the Diaclone driver mini-figure was dropped.

:The original Grimlock changes from robot into a robotic T-Rex and comes with a red energo-sword, a black double-barreled rifle, and a rocket launcher with three silver rockets.

: Grimlock was later reissued in the European/Australian-exclusive "Classics" series. In Japan, he and the other four Dinobots were offered as mail-away items during Operation Combination; Grimlock cost 2300 yen (his original retail price) and 2 Robot Points.
In Japan, he was only available in a boxed "Hero Set" with the other three Legends toys, but with a silver face rather than the Hasbro version's orange.

: In Italy, GiG released their own version of the Hero Set, named "Set Commandos", instead of the Classic Pretender versions of the toys. Grimlock, was renamed from "Tiran" to "Drago", originally the Italian name of Hot Spot. : Part of the initial assortment of non-transforming Action Master figures, Grimlock's design combines his cartoon model with extra toy-based detailing. He came with the Anti-tank cannon "partner" machine which could be ridden by Grimlock (or any other Action Master) or unfolded via spring-loaded gimmick to form a really big hand-held "long-range mortar launcher". His engine transforms into a double-barreled gun, and he also carries an orange sword which can attach to the underside of his vehicle mode. The toy is one of the most-complained-about Alternators toys, due to its notoriously finicky transformation (with many small steps that must be performed in exactly the right order) and to several pieces which have a tendency to pop off with relatively small amounts of force. <s> And it's a Grimlock who doesn't transform into a Tyrannosaurus Rex. </s>

:His bayonet blaster can be deployed in either mode and fires a clear red projectile. Both weapons can be stored on his back when not used. As with most Classics toys, Grimlock features a heat-sensitive rubsign, placed on the left side of the tyrannosaurus torso/his left leg.

:A common complaint about the figure is the size of the peg being too small in relation to the peg-hole, making it impossible to lock the arms into place. In addition, the bayonet blaster has a hair-trigger and for no apparent reason, his fist holes are a few fractions of a millimeter too small to accommodate standard 5mm peg accessories that most modern Transformers toys use.

As with all Henkei toys, he lacks the heat sensitive rubsign seen on the Classics release, and instead features vacuum-metalized "chromed" plastic (in a similar gimmick to the Beast Wars Transmetals toys). The vac-metal is used on his beast mode feet, as well as the tyrannosaurus torso, which was, oddly enough, in Hasbro's original deco plan for Classics Grimlock.
Masterpiece
*Grimlock (2009)
**Japanese ID number: MP-8
**Accessories: Energo sword, twin 'stunner' lasers rifle, waiter apron, waiter bow tie, waiter tray, 7 unique waiter glasses, intelligence transfer helmet

: Released in March of 2009, Masterpiece Grimlock is based upon his original toy and cartoon model, transforming into an outdated view of the Tyrannosaurus rather than the more accurate depiction seen on Classics Grimlock. Of all the Masterpiece figures, Grimlock features both the least complex transformation, as well as the least deviation from his original toy's essential transformation scheme.

: Masterpiece Grimlock features the usage of die-cast metal for his dinosaur mode's toes and a LED mounted within his right fist which illuminates both his gun's barrels and his sword. As a result of said mechanism, the only articulated part of his right hand is the thumb. Similarly his left hand is modeled much like Masterpiece Starscream's hands with the thumb and index finger fully articulate with the remaining fingers joined together. Possibly as a show of good faith regarding the sacrificed articulation, TakaraTomy designed his alternate mode's arms to be highly poseable, featuring full articulation of the claws with the arms themselves attatched to the body with ball joints.

: He features many gimmicks, including the ability to change his eye color in either mode from red to blue with the flip of a switch found at the back of his head in robot mode, and by opening the top of his head in dino mode and switching the eyes around. This allows the owner the choice of representing the use of blue in the cartoon (and his IDW alternate mode) or the use of red in most other media, including his original toy. His tail is connected to his head, and by wiggling and moving it, the head rotates at the base of the neck. Pushing down on his torso in dinosaur mode makes his legs move up higher into his body, and as a result his head will look up. His alt-mode's head features jaws that snap shut at the press of a button hidden on his cheek; in addition, it also has a tiny sculpted flame thrower in its mouth, but for your safety, it does not actually breathe fire (boo). Besides his weapons, he also comes with a cloth apron and bow tie to go with a drinks serving tray he carried in "Madman's Paradise", as well as the device he used to transfer his super-intelligence into Computron in "Grimlock's New Brain".
**Accessories: Energo sword, twin 'stunner' lasers rifle, crown

:King Grimlock is a redeco of the Masterpiece Grimlock with a color scheme based on his appearance in the comic book series The Transformers published by Marvel Comics. All of his previously flat gray surfaces are coated in silver paint, his gold chrome is more vibrant, and his previously black plastic is now a dark blue in reference to the limited color palette of the Marvel Comics issues. The colorless chrome used for his tail and arms is now a light blue chrome. He also features some different paint applications: on his dinosaur chest, inside the clear panel on his robot mode chest, and on his robot mode knees. His toes are now metallic yellow instead of metallic gray. He lacks the faceplate paint of the original Masterpiece Grimlock. His sword is also tinted orange rather than neutral clear, and the clear panel on his chest is clear dark green plastic instead of neutral clear. Curiously what were the red eyes in dinosaur mode on the original Masterpiece Grimlock are now the blue eyes on King Grimlock, and the blue eyes are now the red. The product also features the crown worn by Grimlock in the comics<!--during 'issue needed' from 'issue needed'--> instead of the accessories from the cartoon, such as the waiter apron or the glasses.
:King Grimlock was only available via Toy Hobby Market, the official shopping site of TakaraTomy. Pre-orders were open through July 31st through September 11th 2009, with the toy shipping out in December.
He features additional painted details on his thighs, biceps, and waist to mimic label stickers included on the original 1985 figure. The dark gray painted details on his robot mode toes for the TakaraTomy release are now gold. The dinosaur mode's toe nails are now coated in a thick gold paint rather than the polished golden look of the TakaraTomy version. The red paint used on the metal area on his crotch is a lighter shade of red than used on the TakaraTomy version, matching the adjacent red plastic less than on the import release.

* The original Diaclone commercial for the mold that became Grimlock showed him spewing fire from his mouth. Guess why that was removed, huh?

* There is a Grimlock toy placed in the showcase in the dinosaur section of the Natural History Museum in London, United Kingdom; oddly, this doesn't make him the only one.

* Grimlock's function is Lieutenant Commander instead of Dinobot Commander on his Pretender Classic and Alternator toys. Lieutenant Commander is Sky Lynx's rank. Deal with it, egobot.

* A working name for the Alternators Ford Mustang mold which ultimately ended up as Grimlock was "Freeway", according to various early store listings.

* T-Wrecks may have been intended to be a new form for Grimlock, based on the references in his tech spec bio to his Beast Wars "Attack Specialist" function and other hints. However, T-Wrecks' appearances in the 3H Productions Universe: The Wreckers comics suggests he is a new, unrelated character.

* The Grimlock toy released in the Energon toyline was originally created by Hasbro for release as a special new-mold addition for the 2003 Universe toyline, and was intended to represent Generation 1 Grimlock. However, it wasn't and it didn't for the combination of budgetary concerns and keeping the combination gimmick (since he combines with the packed-in Swoop to form "Mega-Dinobot") only in the Energon toyline, which had combination as a central theme.
Much like Optimus Prime, Rodimus is a great military commander and a superior warrior, yet is a 'bot that strives for peace and freedom.

First at odds with Optimus Prime for his conduct of the war against the Decepticons, Rodimus eventually became Optimus' right-hand man and defacto commander of the Autobots when Optimus himself was unavailable.

On Cybertron, Rodimus was a great military commander during the war against the Decepticons, on a par with Optimus Prime. However, he became disillusioned with the endless war and so, accompanied by Prowl, Landmine, and the ancestors of the Omnicons, travelled across the galaxy, righting wrongs and defending the innocent. For this, they gained the eternal admiration of Hot Shot and Ironhide The Legend of Rodimus. Most of this crew eventually chose a peaceful life of mining energon, eventually coming under the leadership of Arcee; Rodimus, Prowl, and Landmine continued to wander the galaxy Survival Instincts.

During his travels, the trio arrived on Planet Q and made contact with the rulers, Alpha Quintesson and Scorponok. They eventually left, but Rodimus promised that they would return if the planet was threatened.

Sure enough, during the time they were gone, Unicron attempted to devour Planet Q. While Alpha Quintesson fretfully waited for Rodimus to return, Scorponok enacted a desperate plan to blow up their world in order to injure the chaos bringer. The planet was destroyed, leaving Alpha Q as the sole survivor, sealed deep within Unicron. By the time Rodimus arrived, all that was left was a field of small asteroids Alpha Q: Identity.

Rodimus re-entered the Autobot/Decepticon conflict around the year 2020, when he prevented Scorponok from stealing a cache of energon on Mars The Legend of Rodimus. Following this, he learned that Scorponok was in fact the resurrected chamberlain of Planet Q, and decided to atone for failing to save Alpha Quintesson in the past by helping him in the present. Even so, Alpha Q did not readily trust him Go for Unicron!.

Rodimus chose not to get involved in a battle at the ruins of Lunar City Kicker Beware!, and subsequently revealed himself to Optimus Prime's crew when Megatron sent three comets to destroy Earth. Rodimus, commanding a large fleet of Blackout Terrorcon drones, was successfully able to destroy one of the comets, leaving the others to detonate on the energon grid Energon Grid.

Seeking allies for the restoration of Planet Q, he contacted Hot Shot and called him to a secret meeting at the ruins of Mars City. Rodimus attempted to recruit both Hot Shot and Kicker for his mission, but they each turned down his offer due to Rodimus' refusal to reveal important information for the sake of dramatic tension Rodimus: Friend or Foe?. Rodimus went on to rescue Scorponok when the latter was used as bait in a trap to ensnare Alpha Q Go for Unicron!.

Shortly thereafter, he made contact with Optimus Prime's crew. Rodimus explained that Unicron could be used to create life, and restore Alpha Q's lost homeworld. As such, it would behove Optimus to allow Unicron to be restored, and instead focus on destroying Megatron. Optimus refused, and so Rodimus departed in frustration.

As Rodimus left, Ironhide stowed away on his ship; Rodimus decided to let him tag along for a while to test his mettle. Rodimus advised Alpha Q that Ironhide could be useful to them, and was proven right after the rookie managed to destroy a large number of Terrorcons and hold his own against Scorponok A Tale of Two Heros.

At Ironhide's request, Rodimus brought Kicker and Misha to meet Alpha Q Battle Stations and told them about the destruction of Planet Q Alpha Q: Identity.

When Alpha Q decided to accompany Kicker and Ironhide to ask Optimus Prime for help, Rodimus accompanied them. When they met, the two commanders quickly came to blows, only stopping when Kicker placed himself between them and begged them to stop Shockblast: Rampage. While their opinions still differed, the pair agreed to stop fighting long enough to defeat Megatron.

When Unicron began to revive, Rodimus led a group of Omnicons on a mission to inject a number of energon stars into its brain in order to soothe its tremors. They had to be rescued by Arcee Survival Instincts. Rodimus later participated in the defense of Cybertron against an attack led by Shockblast Each One Fights.... When Shockblast led a second attack, Rodimus saved Hot Shot's life; Hot Shot returned the favor shortly thereafter during the attack on Unicron, and the two decided to cement their newfound trust and respect in each other by powerlinxing Unicron Unleashed.

When Optimus Prime was injured by Shockblast, Rodimus took command of the Autobots and led them in an attack on Megatron Open Fire!. Megatron used his power over Unicron to escape, and Rodimus' team pursued. When Optimus was saved by Wing Saber, Rodimus placed himself under Optimus' command for the sake of the mission, and accompanied him to save Ironhide and Scorponok. They were successful, but the Decepticons escaped into the rift in space which Megatron had created in the meantime Ripped Up Space.

On the other side of the rift, Rodimus set up a beacon in space to attract any lost Autobots. This way, he was able to reunite Hot Shot, Prowl, and Landmine, and the four then proceeded to Iron Planet to help save Inferno from Megatron Imprisoned Inferno.

During Megatron's second attack on Ocean Planet, Rodimus led the underwater counterstrike, and prevented Mirage and Snow Cat from planting explosives at the base of the energon tower. As a result, an energon grid was successfully set up on Ocean Planet, and the Decepticons repelled Farewell Inferno.
He can also form the top or bottom half of a larger robot mode, compatible with any Energon Combat- or Mega-class Autobot combiner robot. He comes with a large flame-cannon with spring-loaded "flame" missile. His design is a homage to Rodimus Prime from Generation 1.

: The Takara version of Rodimus has a few notable differences, including a darker shade of red, and a flame deco on his truck-mode spoiler, which was removed from Hasbro version due to cost considerations.

: However, both the Hasbro and Takara versions are missing the gold paint decos on the sculpted pipe details next to his exhaust smokestacks, presumably because those parts also form the soles of his feet, making them susceptible to paint chipping.
A brooding loner from the planet Velocitron, Excellion has actually won more respect from the Decepticons than he has the Autobots by successfully infiltrating their base completely unseen on more than one occasion. While the Autobots appreciate his efforts, it's his attitude that has estranged him from his peers.
The Dark Heart of Sandokan
Following the war with Galvatron, Excellion stepped up to join the Autobots and fell under Override's command on board the Star Arrow. During a space mission when they were transporting a valuable Force Chip, the Star Arrow was shot down above the planet Sandokan. While searching for the means of repairing their ship, Excellion and the Autobots were attacked by Synthos, the deranged creature who had brought their ship down. They managed to retreat to a cave where they set up camp to repair their injuries and signal for rescue. Unfortunately, things were never that simple. The Decepticon mercenary known as Astrotrain arrived on Synthos, searching for their Force Chip and the Dark Heart that powered Synthos. Excellion kept watch over their injured comrades Blurr and Longrack while Override and Swerve confronted the Decepticon. He was caught unawares by Astrotrain's Mini-Con partners, however, and lost the Force Chip to the mercenaries.

The Autobots raced after Astrotrain, and caught up with the Decepticon during a skirmish between him and Synthos. Astrotrain attempted to overpower the creature by using the Force Chip, but was fighting a losing battle. Synthos got possession of the Force Chip and nearly became unstoppable as he tried to add its power to his own Dark Heart. Luckily, Excellion and Blurr managed to fend off the creature and reclaim the Force Chip before any of their enemies could. In an ironic twist, the Autobots were then saved by the arrival of the space pirate Cannonball, Astrotrain's employer. As the Decepticons occupied themselves with the threat of Synthos, Excellion and the Autobots snuck aboard Cannonball's shuttle and assumed control of the vessel. With the Force Chip safely tucked away, they began their journey back to Cybertron. The Dark Heart of Sandokan
: Classics Grimlock, a gray and gold Tyrannosaurus rex, is a re-imagined form of his original toy, and is notably designed to run rather than drag (theories on the T-Rex having changed from "caveman adversary" to "Carl Lewis in lizard skin" since the Generation 1 incarnation).

His alt-mode's head also has a tiny sculpted flame thrower in its mouth, but for your safety, it does not actually breathe fire (boo). Besides his weapons, he also comes with a cloth apron and bow tie to go with a drinks serving tray he carried in "Madman's Paradise", as well as the device he used to transfer his super-intelligence into Computron in "Grimlock's New Brain".

The package art is drawn in an homage to the early style of The Transformers published by Marvel Comics, as well as a bilingual Transformers: Universe style bio on the back of the package.

:King Grimlock was only available via Toy Hobby Market, the official shopping site of TakaraTomy. Pre-orders were open through July 31st through September 11th 2009, with the toy shipping out in December.
: Packed with Shockwave, Robot Heroes Grimlock is a detailed two-inch tall soft-plastic figurine with exaggerated, cartoonish proportions and an amusing "raised eyebrow" look on his face. He is sculpted holding his sword in his right hand. He has swivel joints at his shoulders and neck. He brings cuddly wuddly death.
*Grimlock (2007)

: A 48-point "rare" character in the 3D Battle-Card Game's "Energon Wars" expansion, Grimlock "transforms" into a gray vague approximation of a t. Rex. He uses the same parts layout as Megatron and Cruellock.

Notes
* The original Diaclone commercial for the mold that became Grimlock showed him spewing fire from his mouth. Guess why that was removed, huh?

* There is a Grimlock toy placed in the showcase in the dinosaur section of the Natural History Museum in London, United Kingdom oddly this doesn't make him the only one.
