'''Escaping from strange new foes and unable to transform, the four surviving Maximals encounter a mysterious supercomputer which remakes them into a new kind of Transformer.'''

==Summary==
[[Image:Primal ModeLocked.jpg|left|thumb|200px|Oh noes!]]

On the metal-and-steel planet of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], a single flower bizarrely grows out of a tear in the street. Suddenly, a [[Optimus Primal|munky]] races past, pursued by a horde of Tank Drones. In an even stranger vein, Primal has lost his Transmetal properties and is now in his original furry body. After a couple minutes of cat-and-mouse, Optimus decides to face them down and prepares
to Maximize. But his beast-mode parts refuse to move and he screams in pain as he is tortured by electrical shocks.

Suddenly, his eyes glow and he receives a strange signal from an alien source. He sees a [[monorail transport|monorail]] vehicle nearby and swings away from the drones, and finds another one of his missing comrades — [[Rattrap]]. Rattrap explains that he has had a lot of trouble transforming as well and has no memory of returning to Cybertron after the end of the Beast Wars and the capture of Megatron. They escape from the transport after the drones blow it to pieces and Rattrap tries to use his command code repeatedly, resulting in nothing but shocks and pain.

Fortunately, [[Cheetor]] leaps out of nowhere, covering the eyes of one of the drones. It's head spins wildly, and it takes pot shots, destroying one it's counterparts. Cheetor is hoping to find a [[CR chamber]] and use it to eliminate the [[transformation lock virus]] that plagues them all. Rattrap points out that Cybertron seems to have changed a lot in their abscence. But there is no time to discuss matters, as new tank drones are readying a renewed assault. Plunging into a hole, the Maximals bounce on a web. It is [[Blackarachnia]], the Maximal-turned-Predacon, unable to convert and stuck in her organic body.

[[Image:Oracle (The Reformatting).jpg|right|thumb|200px|Nor-mal view! ''Nor-mal view! '''Nor-mal view! NOR-MAL VIIIIIEEEEEEWWWW!!!''''']]

Primal decides that the best course of action is to head deeper underground, where the [[Vehicon]] drones have failed to look. Using the webs of Blackarachnia, they head deeper into the bowels of Cybertron, passing layers and layers of cities as they descend. Brushed metal and steel give way to rusting iron, which gives way to stone. Eventually, too weak to climb, they fall, plunging into complete darkness. Determined not to die, Primal throws a piece of scrap metal, shattering some kind of covering and awakening the supercomputer called the Oracle. A wall of flames springs up. Undaunted by the seeming threat, Optimus walks straight through them, revealing the hologram. The Oracle speaks to Primal, taking him into the bowels of the Matrix.

Granted visions that he could not yet understand, he sees images of an [[Earth]]-like planet transformed into a purely mechanical world. Concluding with the mysterious statement that "the seeds of the future lie buried in the past", the Oracle declares that it is time for him to begin his "reformatting", tapping the power of the Matrix and converting his purely organic gorilla body into a perfect blend of organic tissue and mechanical parts. Stepping back into real-space in a wash of light, the other three Maximals admire his new body. Primal says that they must be "reformatted" as well, and one by one, Cheetor, Rattrap and Blackarachnia exit the Oracle, in new, [[technorganic]] bodies.

[[Image:Thereformattingmaximalsmaximize.jpg|left|thumb|A long tradition of Running Away begins here.]]

Suddenly, the Oracle winks out of existence, and a hum fills the cave. This is another squadron of [[Vehicons]], but instead of tanks, they are motorcycles. Lining up, Primal orders the Maximals to Maximize. Although no pain ensues, nothing happens. Optimus realizes they must learn how to transform as it as somehow become a lost art after the first Transformers "came" to Cybertron. Realizing this, the Maximals resign to combat in their strange new beast modes. Rattrap attacks a Cycle Drone's wheel with his teeth, Cheetor pounces on a motorcycle, and Blackarachnia uses her webs to snare another. Primal is shot, and plunges into a pit. Panicking, a voice from the Oracle reminds him that "he must tame the beast without to release the warrior within".

Finding his inner balance, he manages to transform. A blue light spreads throughout his body, converting it to robot mode through a liquid-morph style transformation. Activating his jets, he flies out from certain doom. Grabbing the nearest Drone, he demands answers, but gets none as they escape. His anger has made him lose his center, and he converts back to beast mode. Awed, Cheetor expresses his interest in this new transformation style. Optimus declares that they must re-learn the art of transformation and their new style of combat.

Meanwhile, a mysterious figure watches the battle in the citadel and vows to destroy the "impure" organic Maximals. It's [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]], now the supreme ruler of Cybertron!
A '''Transmetal''' is a (generally) [[Vok]]-related enhanced form of a [[Beast Wars]] era Transformer, featuring a "mutated superstructure" which seems to be made out of some kind of organic metal.

==Transmetal (first wave)==
[[Image:Megs_transmetal.JPG|left|thumb|200px|"With the power of ''shininess'', I shall be unstoppable, yessss!"]]

In beast mode, the Transmetals seemed almost, if not entirely, mechanical, much like the animal forms of their [[Generation 1|predecessors]]. However, as part of a partial "inversion", many of their robot modes bore organic elements, such as [[Cheetor (BW)|Cheetor]]'s furry chest. Transmetals also typically featured a third "mobility" mode. While not full vehicular modes, these half-modes gave aspects of a vehicle to the existing beast forms. Examples included Rattrap as a wheeled rat, Primal as a sky-surfing gorilla, Cheetor as a jet-powered cat, and [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]] as a [[Wikipedia:VTOL|VTOL]]-enhanced inline skating enthusiast.
{{-}}
===''Beast Wars'' cartoon===
[[Image:Optimus_transmetal.JPG|right|200px|thumb|Brass monkey.]]

The Transmetals were created as a result of Transformers being bathed in a [[quantum surge]] after the destruction of the Vok [[Planet Buster]]. {{storylink|Aftermath}} All the Beast Warriors who were not "born" from a [[protoform]] on Earth or shielded in a [[CR Chamber]] were altered. Why Earth-"born" Transformers were unaffected by the surge's effects a mystery, especially considering that protoforms still in stasis pods were affected to various degrees.

The Transmetallized individuals were Megatron, [[Tarantulas (BW)|Tarantulas]], [[Rattrap]], and [[Cheetor]]. [[Scorponok (BW)|Scorponok]] and [[Terrorsaur (BW)|Terrorsaur]] were in the middle of their mutation when they fell into lava pits seeping into the [[Darksyde|Predacon base]] and perished. [[Rampage (BW)|Rampage]] was Transmetallized in his stasis pod. {{storylink|Bad Spark}} It's unclear whether he was a true protoform at the time, but when [[Optimus Primal]]'s spark was transplanted into a fresh new protoform, the resulting form was Transmetal as well. {{storylink|Coming of the Fuzors (Part 2)}} Other protoforms in evidence include [[Transmutate]], who was judged "partially Transmetal", {{storylink|Transmutate}} and the [[Fuzor]]s [[Silverbolt (BW)|Silverbolt]] and [[Quickstrike (BW)|Quickstrike]], who displayed the Transmetal quality of immunity to the [[Metal Hunter]]'s weapon. {{storylink|Other Visits (Part 2)}} Even a fair bit of time after the surge, [[Depth Charge (BW)|Depth Charge]] was turned into a full Transmetal as he approached Earth in his ship. {{storylink|Deep Metal}}

{{note|The [[Ain't No Rat|various]] [[Primeval Dawn|spinoff]] [[The Gathering|series]] of Beast Wars, despite being mutually exclusive, agree both that [[Ramulus|many]] [[Spittor|protoforms]] [[Optimus Minor|were]] Transmetallized, and that [[Razorclaw (BW)|some]] [[Bonecrusher (BW)|were]] not at all. There is no known determining factor.}}

[[Image:Depth_charge_tm.JPG|left|200px|thumb|Yep, he's a Transmetal too. That's what happens when [[transwarp|time itself]] gets messed with.]]

Most Transmetals had additional weapons and seemingly enhanced power levels. They were immune to some [[Vok]] weapons and possibly to the effects of [[energon]] radiation.

The evidence of the latter is scant, since most of the energon deposits on [[Earth]]'s surface had been destroyed or converted to stable [[energon cube]]s by the Planet Buster cannon. However, Transmetal Tarantulas was once seen standing beneath an energon cache, completely unaffected. {{storylink|Tangled Web}} Then not long afterwards, the non-Transmetal [[Inferno (BW)|Inferno]] suffered energon overload while in a cave containing energon crystals. {{storylink|The Agenda (Part 2)}} So immunity to the radiation may be an effect of Transmetallization.

{{note|According to [[Ben Yee]], the Transmetals were originally conceived of by ''Beast Wars'' writers as "absorbing" energon radiation and then needing to discharge that energy later, typically as weapon energy.<ref>[http://www.bwtf.com/bw/tvshow/episodes/seasontwo/badspark/ Ben Yee's "Bad Spark" review]</ref> However, the only time this was hinted at in the series was during "[[Bad Spark]]", when Cheetor "farts" a little energon cloud.}}

{{-}}

===Toys===
In addition to the characters mentioned above, Transmetal toys were also produced for [[Rhinox (BW)|Rhinox]], [[Airazor (BW)|Airazor]], [[Waspinator (BW)|Waspinator]], [[Terrorsaur (BW)|Terrorsaur]], and technically [[Inferno (BW)|Inferno]]. (The [[Scavenger (BW)|Scavenger]] toy was initially intended to be his Transmetal form, and was so in Japan and the UK.) None of these appeared on the show.

Scorponok, [[Blackarachnia (BW)|Blackarachnia]], and [[Dinobot (BW)|Dinobot]], though also not Transmetal in the show, were given their own Transmetal toys as Happy Meal pack-ins from McDonald's. [[Claw Jaw]] and [[Spittor]] were redecoed and sold as Transmetals in European markets with a VHS tape.

Initial Transmetal toys were not designed with guns, only melee weapons, contrary to the requirements of the animated series (kinda the opposite of the situation with [[Bludgeon (G1)|Bludgeon]] and co.'s toys vs. their comic book depictions). As a result, [[Mainframe Entertainment]] was forced to come up with creative solutions to give these characters ranged weapons without diminishing the newly increased [[Show-accuracy|toy accuracy]] of the show. Thus, [[Tarantulas]]'s handheld buzzsaw functioned like a gun and the green markings on his shoulders were depicted as missile ports, [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]]'s pincer/whip/flail/"whiplash cutlass" thing (read: he's holding his damn tail) gained the ability to stiffen and fire like a cannon, and [[Cheetor (BW)|Cheetor]]'s hideous hands were capable of firing energy blasts, although only when placed together and thus temporarily making the halves of his beast-mode head whole, with the zaps emanating from its mouth (a pose impossible to achieve with the figure without unhinging the shoulders from the sides.)

Even more elaborate was the functional reconceptualization of [[Optimus Primal]]'s toy, whose hoverboard thruster/mace launcher was used as a laser pistol. Not content with this rather puny-looking firearm, some clever cove at Mainframe noticed that his shoulder-pad and mace-stowing bracket thing could be flipped over his head (a function of his transformation) and improperly positioned in such a way that the long handles of his dual maces pointed outwards like gun barrels and, with the shoulder-pads positioned over his outstretched fists like trigger-guards, the whole device was re-imagined as something resembling two Gatling guns mounted on a steadicam harness.

The only exception to these exotic re-imaginings was [[Rattrap]], who used his tail/whip/spear as intended but also retained his pre-Transmetal gun (albeit with a redeco to suit his new color scheme), despite the fact that the toy did not.

As an odd point of comparison, the later Transmetal [[Optimal Optimus]] was packaged with a rifle, which he never used in the show.

==Transmetal 2==
[[Image:Dinobot2-postcard.jpg|left|150px|thumb|Pose!]]

Near the end of the series, a new breed known as the '''Transmetal 2''' appeared. These new forms blurred the line between the mechanical and the organic even further, with equal parts of both appearing in both modes in an asymmetrical patchwork-like jumble. This often resulted in somewhat monstrous-looking designs.
{{-}}
===''Beast Wars'' cartoon===
[[Image:Ba_transmetal2.JPG|right|thumb|150px|This lasted five episodes. Then Megatron got his [[Transformation_lock_virus|new invention]] all over it.]]

The difference between a "Transmetal" and a "Transmetal 2" was somewhat vague. Only Cheetor, [[Dinobot II]], and Blackarachnia were explicitly described as Transmetals 2. Each of them was altered by an enigmatic piece of Vok technology known as the "[[Transmetal Driver]]", which appeared in Megatron's possession without explanation. Despite lacking the vehicle modes of the previous Transmetals, Transmetal-2-ness was generally viewed as an enviable upgrade. Cheetor, Blackarachnia and Dinobot II all displayed some degree of "supernatural" powers, with Cheetor showing vague visionary tendencies (which, admittedly, had happened before), Blackarachnia demonstrating telekinesis, {{storylink|Master Blaster}}and Dinobot II showing incredible speed, strength, and rate of healing. {{storylink|Feral Scream Part 2}}. Megatron also had the "supernatural" powers to breath out fire and ice.

[[Image:Megs_tm2.JPG|left|thumb|"Optimal Megatron" didn't roll off the tongue.]]

{{note|Despite there being no overt involvement of the Transmetal Driver in the fiction, Megatron's dragon-form and [[Tigerhawk (BW)|Tigerhawk]] were sold as a Transmetal 2 toys. Also, [[Cryotek]]'s [[3H Productions|3H]] [[bio]]<ref>[http://botcon.com/archive/story/characters/cryotek.html Cryotek's 3H bio]</ref> described Megatron And Cryotek as Transmetals II. But "Optimal Optimus", who was upgraded in the same fashion (one body holding two sparks), was sold as a vanilla Transmetal. The fiction stayed quiet on the matter, other than portraying all of these characters as the most powerful of the Beast Warriors.}}

{{-}}

===Toys===
According to their toy packages and bios, the Transmetals 2 were all the results of Megatron's cloning experiments. This roughly aligned with the beginning of the cartoon story, as the first Transmetal 2, Dinobot II, was created by Megatron. This cloning experiment angle also helped to explain the presence of [[Optimus Minor]].

Unlike Transmetals, most Transmetals 2 did not have a third mode. Only the largest Transmetal 2 toys, Tigerhawk and Megatron, were designed to have more than two modes, but Megatron's was never featured in the TV show and Tigerhawk's was dropped entirely even from the toy. Neither vehicle mode was especially well-implemented.

Early on in the release of Transmetal 2 toys, the packaging used a Roman numeral "II", but a running change in the packaging was made to the Arabic number "2".

When the Maximals encountered Megatron's [[Transformation virus|virus]], the Transmetals among them had a strange reaction. Rather than becoming instantly paralyzed, as apparently happened to the majority of Cybertronians exposed, they simply lost their Transmetallization. Primal, Cheetor, Rattrap, and Blackarachnia reverted to their pre-Transmetal beast modes (or, in Primal's case, the form he would have had if he hadn't been "born" a Transmetal). {{storylink|Coming of the Fuzors (Part 2)}} They were able to stay mobile, though glitching and amnesic, while Rhinox and Silverbolt immediately succumbed to paralysis. It seems that whatever Transmetal properties had protected Silverbolt from the [[Metal Hunter]] couldn't save him from the virus. {{storylink|Revelations Part II: Descent}}

'''Size class''' is how [[Hasbro]] determines the size and price of a toy. It also determines the amount of budget spent on the production of a [[toy|Transformers toy]], such as paint or electronics. The logic behind size classes is simple; retailers can order a case of toys, knowing exactly how much they will sell for and exactly how much shelf space they will occupy. All the Deluxes in a line have identically-sized packaging and cost the same price. When you run out of Deluxes, you order a new case and put them right back where they belong. This is incredibly convenient, especially compared to [[Generation 1 (toyline)|Generation 1]], where the sizes and prices of figures varied widely.

Up until [[Generation 2 (toyline)|Generation 2]], toys with a uniform gimmick were sold as their own distinct assortment, which often resulted in an assortment consisting of no more than four or six different toys. Since Autobots and Decepticons often had their own distinct gimmicks, this resulted in separate Autobot and Decepticon assortments. Starting with [[Beast Wars (toyline)|Beast Wars]], however, Hasbro introduced uniform price points which continued as ongoing size class assortments throughout the line (although, in the case of longer lines, an assortment could occasionally be reset while still retaining the same size class name).

Size classes have not been consistent from line to line, with names often changing to affect marketability.

==Beast Wars==
''[[Beast Wars (toyline)|Beast Wars]]'' had five size classes. From smallest to largest:
* '''Basic,''' the cheapest at US$5.
* '''Deluxe,''' at US$10.
* '''Mega,''' at US$15. Toys of this size were often [[shelfwarmer]]s.
* '''Ultra,''' at US$20. Only six toys were sold at this price point.
* '''Super,''' at US$30. This size class contained only one toy, [[Optimal Optimus]].

Basic and Deluxe are sold on cards to this day; size classes larger than Deluxe were, and are, sold in boxes.

==Beast Machines==
''[[Beast Machines (toyline)|Beast Machines]]'' continued ''Beast Wars''<nowiki>'</nowiki> size classes, but increased the price of Basic to US$7. '''Supreme''' was introduced as a US$40 size class; [[Cheetor (BW)|Cheetor]] was the only Supreme in this line; a Supreme [[Optimus Primal]] toy was planned to be in this line, but was moved to ''Robots in Disguise''. Two additional size classes, [[Deployer|Deployers]] (US$5) and [[Beast Rider|Beast Riders]] (US$10) would turn out to be short-lived. The size of Ultra toys was increased while maintaining the price.

==Robots in Disguise==
''[[Robots in Disguise (toyline)|Robots in Disguise]]'' used the ''Beast Machines'' size classes, though the Basic price point was once again lowered to US$5. However, most of the toys at this price point were either [[Spychanger]] two-packs or [[redeco|redecoed]] ''Generation 1'' combiner limbs, making them somewhat smaller and less intricate than previous lines' Basics (a notable exception is the recolor of [[Obsidian]], which was sold for less than the original version). ''Robots in Disguise'' also had two Mega-priced multipacks of smaller figures (a trio of recolored ''Beast Machines'' Basics as Autobots, and the recolored [[Laser Cycles]].

''Robots in Disguise'', it should also be noted, ran afoul of the differences between US and Japanese packaging policies. Namely, the members of [[Team Bullet Train]] were individually packaged as Megas, despite being smaller than the usual members of that size class, and the near-Basic-sized [[Wedge]] was sold as a Deluxe.

==Armada==
The ''[[Armada (toyline)|Armada]]'' toyline renamed or repurposed all the existing price points:
* '''Mini-Con,''' at US$6.50 replaced the Basic price point, with 3-packs of [[Mini-Con]]s.
* '''Super-Con,''' at US$10 replaced the Deluxe.
* '''Max-Con,''' at US$20 replaced the Ultra.
* '''Giga-Con,''' at US$25 was a new price point.
* '''Super-Base,''' at US$40 replaced Supreme.
* "[[Unicron]]" became his own size class, at US$50.

The old US$15 Mega size class was effectively discontinued, taken up by role-play toys like [[Laserbeak (Armada)|Laserbeak]].

==Universe==
The original ''[[Universe (toyline)|Universe]]'' line used the ''Beast Wars'' size class designations, but only had '''Deluxe''' and '''Ultra''' (the latter at US$20). After the ''Universe'' line as such had effectively ended, repackaged ''Energon'' (and even later, ''Cybertron'') toys were sold on ''Universe'' cards as discount chain [[exclusive|exclusives]], divided into the price points '''Basic''' (US$5) and '''Deluxe''' (US$8).

==Alternators==
The ''[[Alternators (toyline)|Alternators]]'' line was unique insofar as it only consisted of one single price point (US$20). This was owed to the uniform [[scale]] of the line at 1:24, as well as the fact that all the toys from the line were based on licensed vehicles. Some retailers actually listed the toys under the "Mega" price point, but this designation was never officially used by Hasbro. In fact, there was an official "Mega Alternators" assortment of sorts, which consisted of shrinkwrapped two-packs consisting of two individual toys (mostly limited to [[shelfwarmer|shelfwarmers]] such as [[Smokescreen (G1)|Smokescreen]], [[Sideswipe (G1)|Side Swipe]] or [[Windcharger (G1)|Windcharger]], available for the price of a single Alternators toy exclusive at Toys'R'Us. Hasbro later replaced the original mass retail Alternators assortment with a second one, which remained at the original one's price point. In the case of Alternators [[Optimus Prime (G1) toys|Optimus Prime]], Hasbro reportedly accepted a loss in profit (since the toy was more expensive to produce than other Alternators toys) so they could still sell it at the US$20 price point.

==Energon==
''[[Energon (toyline)|Energon]]'' took a somewhat random approach to size-class naming. The second pack-in catalog introduced the size class range as
* '''Energon''' (Basic), with the price back to $7
* '''Combat''' (Deluxe).
* '''Mega Combat''' (the old Ultra price point, aka "Max-Con" during ''Armada'')
* '''Commanders''' (the former "Giga-Con").
* '''Leaders''' (the former "Super Base").
* [[Unicron]] was given no size class.

The third catalog explicitly referred to the price points as
* '''Energon Class'''
* '''Combat Class'''
* '''Mega Class'''
* '''Command Class'''
* '''Leaders Class'''
* Omega Supreme was given no size class.

The fourth and final catalog continued using the terms originated by the third (although listed no price points for the combiners), but finally listed Omega Supreme as '''Supreme Class'''.

==Cybertron==
''[[Cybertron (toyline)|Cybertron]]'' changed the naming of some size classes, but retained others:
* '''[[Legends of Cybertron]],''' at US$3, with tiny [[Market six]]-aimed figures.
* '''Mini-Con Class,''' at US$5 was added for the Mini-Con two-packs.
* '''Scout Class,''' at US$7, formerly Energon Class.
* '''Deluxe Class,''' at US$10, formerly Combat Class.
* '''Voyager Class,''' at US$20, formerly Mega Class.
* '''Ultra Class,''' at US$25, formerly Command Class.
* '''Leader Class,''' dropping the plural "s" from the previous "Leaders Class".
* '''Supreme Class,''' remained the same.

==Classics==
''[[Classics (2006)|Classics]]'' kept the Deluxe and Voyager classes, renamed as
* '''Legends,''' at US$4 - Legends of Cybertron repaints, raised $1 in price.
* '''Mini-Con,''' at US$7, in three-packs again, replacing the Scout Class price point.
* '''Classic Deluxe,''' at US$10.
* '''Classic Voyager,''' at US$20.

==Movie==
''Transformers'', the toyline based on the 2007 [[Transformers (2007)|live-action movie]], retains many size classes from before:
* '''Legends,''' at US$4.
* '''Scout,''' at US$7.
* '''Deluxe,''' at US$10.
* '''Voyager,''' at US$20.
* '''Leader,''' at US$40.

The '''Ultra''' and '''Supreme''' classes were dropped. The Scout Class, which consisted entirely of [[redeco|redecos]] of toys from the ''Energon'' and ''Cybertron'' toylines, was exclusively available at Target stores in the USA, but was sold at mass retail in Europe. Additionally, there were a gimmick-based sub-line named '''Fast Action Battlers''', which also sold at US$10 (like the Deluxe Class toys), and a new US$90 figure sold as '''Ultimate Bumblebee.'''

==Animated==
The [[Animated (toyline)|''Transformers Animated'' toyline]] has the following confirmed size classes, as of February 2008:
* '''Deluxe,''' at US$10.
* '''Voyager,''' at US$20.
* '''Leader,''' at US$40.
* '''Supreme,''' at US$50.

Apparently, the Legends-style toys have been merged with the [[Fast Action Battlers]] concept from the movie toyline into the new '''Activators''' class, which will presumably sell at the former Scout price point.

[[Image:Rumble_and_frenzy.jpg|thumb|right|300px|Rumble and Frenzy. Or Frenzy and Rumble. Whatever.]]
An acronym sometimes bandied about by fans, '''FIBRIR''' stands for "[[Frenzy (G1)|Frenzy]] is blue, [[Rumble (G1)|Rumble]] is red". Likewise, '''FIRRIB''' means "Frenzy is red, Rumble is blue". The forms RIBFIR and RIRFIB are also known.

The debate revolves around the colors of the [[Decepticon]] [[Mini-Cassette]]s, Rumble and Frenzy. It was [[Hasbro]]'s intent that Rumble be black and red, and Frenzy be two shades of blue. These color schemes are used in the toyline, [[Marvel Comics]] and many storybooks and ancillary media from the early years of [[Generation 1]], and naturally, it was intended for the [[Generation 1 (cartoon)|cartoon series]] to render the characters in this manner as well (as proven by the show's [[production bible]], which identifies Rumble as the "red robot"). However, as a result of some unspecified error somewhere in production, the two robots had their color schemes swapped, leaving the animated incarnation of Rumble blue, and Frenzy red.

Due to the widespread recognition the cartoon received, the concept of Rumble as the blue robot was ingrained into the minds of many viewers. As such, years later, [[fandom|fans]] would argue vehemently (though often tongue-in-cheek) over which coloration was "correct", based mainly on their personal preference for the cartoon or comic.

The FIRRIB movement was codified by a MUSH user and cartoon fan named Scott Wells in 1994<ref>[http://groups.google.com/group/alt.toys.transformers/browse_frm/thread/7f7aa2ec041325c4/d066fdb5fb0bdaf9?lnk=gst&q=FIRRIB#d066fdb5fb0bdaf9 ATT FAQ file, 1994]</ref>, who coined the acronym FIRRIB. The FIRRIB idea quickly caught on with other cartoon fans on [[alt.toys.transformers]], frequently appearing in signature files; its counterpoint, the comic- and toy-based FIBRIR, soon appeared as well. After endless discussion threads fueled by little more than personal preference, the subject eventually landed in the group's FAQ file as a do-not-ask question.<ref>[http://groups.google.com/group/alt.toys.transformers/msg/75181b5ca5175ca3?&q=FIRRIB+FAQ ATT FAQ file, 1998]</ref>

The Japanese dub of the Generation 1 cartoon rectified the error, making the animation match the toys by simply switching the characters' names around.

As later incarnations of the characters draw on both the cartoon and toys as influences, the waters have become muddier still:
