The Maximal Elders believed that by surrounding him with rowdy youngsters, Big Convoy might learn how to make friends.

[[Great Convoy]], a member of the Maximal Elders, lead a Maximal armada of hundreds of warships against the Chaos God. The Decepticon [[Emperor of Destruction]], he bears a bitter grudge against [[Autobot]] Supreme Commander, [[Star Saber (G1)|Star Saber]]. He prefers to lead his warriors from a distance, though engages in battle when necessary. Much like a Bond villain, he'll gladly tell you his plan before leaving you unsupervised in a delayed-result death trap.

He commands the [[Decepticon Space City]]. Deathsaurus is a [[Breastforce]] warrior, meaning he has two detachable breastplates which can transform into the [[Tigerbreast]] and [[Eaglebreast]], respectively.

Years ago, striving to become the Decepticons' new [[Emperor of Destruction]], Deathsaurus created a gigantic battle fortress capable of destroying planets, but an attack by the young [[Autobot]] commander [[Star Saber (G1)|Star Saber]] saw the fortress de-powered and trapped within a region of space known as the [[Dark Nebula]]. This began the enmity between Star Saber and Deathsaurus, and as both combatants rose through the ranks of their respective armies, Deathsaurus vowed to eventually liberate his fortress and use it to destroy Star Saber.

After the conclusion of the [[Masterforce|Masterforce war]] on Earth, Deathsaurus set his sights on the planet's vast energy sources, and, from his command post on the Decepticons' starcraft the [[Thunder Arrow]], he directed his troops, the [[Breastforce]] and [[Dinoforce]] in attacks on the planet. Deathsaurus rarely dirtied his own hands, entering battle only rarely, and only when there was a chance that he could confront Star Saber directly, such as there was when he led the Breastforce in raiding the electical energy of American subway systems. This led him to be the object of great contempt from Breastforce sub-leader [[Leozack]], who schemed against Deathsaurus, but systematically failed to succeed in his numerous ploys, either as a result of his own incompetence or the counter-scheming of his subordinate, [[Hellbat]], who sought to overthrow both him and Deathsaurus. Deathsaurus was no fool, however, and remained perpetually aware of Leozack's plans - when the time came, he thrashed the Breastforcer in combat and forced him to swear utter loyalty to him.

While Star Saber was on the [[Planet Micro]], Deathsaurus returned to the Dark Nebula to investigate the possibility of reactivating his fortress; he did not have enough energy, but was at least able to confirm that the fortress was in functional order and could be reactivated when the time came. Unfortunately for him, having expended what energy he had to confirm this, he was unable to finish Star Saber when he engaged him in battle in space on the return trip. Later, back on Earth, Deathsaurus lured Star Saber into a trap in the desert, where he attacked with the power of the Living Metal-Destroying Cannon. The weapon almost finished Star Saber off until [[Ginrai|God Ginrai]] intervened and was left at death's door instead, but when he was reconstructed as [[Victory Leo]] and combined with Star Saber to form [[Victory Saber]], they were able to thwart Deathsaurus's plan to bombard Earth with asteroids.

Discovering that the sunken continent of [[Atlantis]] contained enough raw energy to re-energise his fortress, Deathsaurus ransacked the ancient ruins and abandoned the Dinosaur Force to their fate as the Thunder Arrow shot off into space to fulfil his evil plan. With the fortress active and headed directly for Earth, even Victory Saber could not stand up to its power, but a resentful Dinosaur Force supplied information on the fortress's weak spot to Star Saber's adopted human son, [[Jan]], who used his own [[Illumina II|personal mech]] to enter the fortress and strike and this vulnerability. As he did so, Deathsaurus and Star Saber engaged in a vicious battle, during which Deathsaurus lost an eye, and was eventually stopped when Star Saber broke his sword off in the villain's chest. Gushing fuel and fluid, Deathsaurus vowed to have the last laugh as he set the crippled fortress on a collision course with Earth, and blew himself out an airlock, vowing to return again and again. But, as his body drifted off into space, no sign of life was visible from the conquered emperor. Victory Saber subsequently destroyed the fortress, but Deathsaurus was not heard from again.

As a parallel to Star Saber's adoption of [[Jan Minakaze|Jan]], Deathsaurus had a "son" of his own, a human boy named [[Solon]]. Solon's mother was killed during a Decepticon attack on Earth, and who Deathsaurus "adopted", turning him into a cyborg and raising him to believe that he was his son. Solon had frequent clashes with Jan, whose school he began attending, which often degenerated into "my dad can beat up your dad"-style arguments as their "fathers" battled. At one point, Deathsaurus even attempted to bribe Jan into joining the Decepticons with toys, games, candy and cash.

Solon had his own battle armour and often rode Deathsaurus's Breastars as steeds, but when Victory Leo and Star Saber merged into Victory Saber, Deathsaurus sought a way to increase his own power in a similar fashion and crafted a Transformer-sized mech for Solon named [[King Solon]], with which he was able to combine, forming [[King Zaras]]. However, in the midst of this battle, Solon discovered the truth about his mother, and his distraction allowed Victory Saber to destroy the King Solon mecha. Deathsaurus fled, abandoning Solon, who accepted his earthly heritage and joined the Autobots.

During the final battle, as Deathsaurus's fortress attacks the Earth, it is he who battles Star Saber in space ''(unlike the animated series, in which Liokaiser takes this role)''. Leozack, then, is able to take his treachery to the ultimate extreme by turning the fortress's power on Deathsaurus, and Deathsaurus cripples the craft with his cannon as Star Saber takes Leozack down. Then, the wounded Deathsaurus reveals the true reason he has quested to liberate the fortress from the Dark Nebula - it is home to the Decepticons' families and civilians. As the shocked Autobots discover this, they meet Deathsaurus's wife, [[Esmeryl]] and Deathsaurus and Star Saber then make peace, shaking hands and vowing to work together for the betterment of the Transformer race.

Using a clone lab on [[Ceti Alpha Seven]], Deathsaurus wished to revive the fading Decepticon Empire with a vast [[Insecticon (G1)|Insecticon]] army. After the first batch of [[Virulent Clone|clones]] was completed, his operation was interrupted by a team of [[Autobot]] commandos under the command of [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]]. Deathsaurus overpowered and captured the first wave himself, and soon faced Ironhide one-on-one, while [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]] attempted to rescue the fallen Autobots. Due to the assistance of Tripredacus Agent [[Flamewar]], these two were defeated and captured as well.

They woke up bound inside Deathsaurus' clone lab. The Emperor of Destruction appeared on a television screen, declaring that his use for the lab was completed and was prepared to detonate it remotely with the Autobots inside. Unfortunately for Deathsaurus, the Autobot espionage agent [[Ricochet (Timelines)|Ricochet]] not only freed the Autobots before the explosion occurred, but also seeded the remaining clones with a virus, leaving Deathsaurus with nothing to show for his work.

Unusually for late G1 toys, he has diecast-metal feet in beast mode.

Galvatron originally controlled the Americas in an alternate 2009 where Unicron had been victorious in his [[The Transformers: The Movie (1986)|attack on Cybertron]]. He knew that the other countries of Earth were planning a nuclear strike against the force-field with which he barricaded the continents. He thought that his shield could withstand, and absorb, the energy of the attack. This Galvatron was quite mad in his home time - he lethally punished his close lieutenant [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]], and continued to 'kill' a long-dead Rodimus Prime whose remains he'd strung up on what was left of the World Trade Center.

Before he could make good his plans for nuclear energy, though, he was snatched through time to 1991 by [[Hook, Line and Sinker]], who were working for a Unicron who 'may or may not become' the one who created him. This Unicron tried to use him as a soldier in his own attack on Cybertron, but Galvatron quickly turned against him. He assisted [[Emirate Xaaron]] in his attempts to awaken [[Primus]]; Unicron sent Hook, Line and Sinker to eliminate Galvatron, but he easily destroyed the trio. He later both fought against and allied with this era's Megatron by the time he ended up aboard the [[Ark]] as it returned to Earth and crashed. Now driven completely mad, he wreaked havoc until he was defeated by [[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress Maximus]]. He hasn't been seen since Maximus threw him into a frozen lake.

Soundwave guards his place in the hierarchy fiercely. Though loyal to Megatron, the other Decepticons see him as a two-faced snake. As Communications Officer, Soundwave sees and hears all, and will not hesitate to use blackmail to keep himself high in Megatron's esteem. The other Decepticons wouldn't mind abandoning him on the battlefield -- if they thought Megatron would let them get away with it.

Prior to his arrival on Earth, Soundwave had the questionably useful [[altmode]] of a space-age lamp-post. This allowed him to get as close to Autobot headquarters as the street leading into [[Iacon]], but thankfully his chest-dwelling minion [[Laserbeak (G1)|Laserbeak]] could snoop even closer. The loyal Laserbeak overheard talk of the Autobot mission to seek new energy sources off Cybertron, which prompted the fateful Decepticon interception mission that eventually landed both teams on Earth.

Immediately after the Transformers awakened on Earth in 1984, Soundwave played an essential role in the generation of [[energon cube]]s and the formation of plans for a new space cruiser to return the Decepticons to Cybertron. He sounded really cool when he talked about these, too. Soundwave was reformatted as a portable casette player, which allowed him to dupe a grabby and none-too-questioning [[Spike Witwicky]] into carrying his shrunken form into the [[Ark]] headquarters. This was to happen many times to the seemingly tape-deck addicted citizens of Earth.

Later, he used his mind-reading talents to acquire an antimatter formula for the Decepticons from the brain of [[Chip Chase]]. One of Soundwave's most notable misadventures came in in 1985, when, operating a plan conceived by [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]], he brainwashed humans with ultrasonic vibrations inside the Decepticon-built night club [[Dancitron]] in [[New York City]], leading to a confrontation with his Autobot Communications Officer counterpart, [[Blaster (G1)|Blaster]], beginning a lasting rivalry between the two.

Soundwave rarely displayed much emotion, and only infrequently exhibited any of the cunning and self-serving traits described in his tech spec. He always came across as extremely loyal to Megatron, even going so far as to recover the mortally wounded leader after being left for dead at the Battle of Autobot City in 2005. But while Soundwave was loyal, he was far from stupid, and kept his mouth shut when Megatron was subsequently ejected into space, and although he did suggest himself as a replacement leader, he again loyally served Megatron when he returned as [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]].

In the year 2006, although operating in a less prominent capacity for most of the time, Soundwave played a prominent role in Galvatron's attempt to learn the secret of a sonic weapon on the planet [[Eurythma]], where sound and music were the way of life, leaving Soundwave entranced by the planet's perfect melodies. Recording each piece of the harmony that formed the devastating sonic effect, Soundwave was defeated when the Eurythmans countered the harmony with white noise, and was again pulled into a confrontation with Blaster, who erased his recordings.

Soundwave appeared most prominantly in the second issue of the "Fight! Super Robot Life Transformer" manga. Soundwave and his cassettes had stolen some top secret information and were being pursued through Tokyo by the Autobots. His chase eventually ended when Bumblebee got the drop on him with his patented "Bumble-Kick" and shattered his chest and the stolen information within. The manga maintained something resembling continuity: during his appearance in the third issue of the book, Soundwave was shown to have bandages over his chest. Adorable.

In the early episodes of the Japanese ''Headmasters'' series, Soundwave and Blaster engaged in their final clash in the Arctic circle as the Autobots and Decepticons were in the process of searching for the missing Autobot [[Matrix]] of Leadership. The two opponents inflicted fatal damage on each other, and Soundwave's body exploded even as Blaster collapsed, but his fragments were recovered by his cassettes. Using reconstructive technology from the planet [[Master]], the leader of the Decepticon Headmasters, [[Scorponok (G1)|Scorponok]] successfully rebuilt and resurrected Soundwave as '''Soundblaster''' - essentially identical to his former self, except for his predominantly black color scheme. As Soundblaster, Soundwave served the same role as he had ever done under the leadership of Galvatron and later Scorponok, frequently embarking on spying missions with [[Ratbat (G1)|Ratbat]].

After the Decepticons had been vanquished from Earth in the last episode of the anime, [[Scorponok (G1)|Mega Zarak]] ordered Soundblaster to remain on Earth in secret to act as a spy for the Decepticons. Soundwave made his presence and intentions known almost instantly (not a very good spy) by kicking [[Wheelie (G1)|Wheelie]] square in the face and taking the [[Spike Witwicky|Witwicky]] family hostage. Strangely enough, the Autobots considered these acts to be hostile. [[Chromedome (G1)|Chromedome]] was left powerless to do anything but surrender, as [[Slugfest (G1)|Slugfest]] and [[Overkill (G1)|Overkill]] brutalized [[Spike Witwicky|Spike]] and threatened [[Carly|Carly]]. Daniel finally snapped and beat the living crap out of the two Cassette dinosaurs, leaving Soundblaster open to Chromedome's poorly named "Master-Chrome Hurricane Throw to the End of Hell!" Chromedome chucked Soundblaster over the horizon where he landed near the rogue Decepticon, [[Sixshot (G1)|Sixshot]].

* Though Soundwave's toy is a microcassette recorder, his fictional appearances depict him as a stereo cassette deck or Walkman. (Likewise, his microcassette tapes are depicted as regular audio cassettes.)
* Animation from early ''Transformers'' commercials featured a Soundwave model colored in very light blue, versus the dark blue used later. Also, instead of the cassettes ejecting themselves from his chest, he reached into his chest compartment with his own fingers and threw the (tiny) tapes into the air.
* The Marvel US comics chose a purple scheme for Soundwave. This could have been an error, an early look for him that was dropped in other media, or perhaps an attempt to distinguish him from the other Decepticons, who were mostly blue (especially since blacks also ended up as blues in the industry's then-limited color pallette). The Marvel UK comics colored him blue like everywhere else.
