[[Image:Dreamwave.jpg|right|thumb|250px|"We're not saying you should buy Dreamwave comics, only that you'll regret it."]]

'''Dreamwave Productions''' was a fairly unknown independent [[Comics|comic book]] publisher when it obtained the ''Transformers'' license in 2001. For a time, there was gigantic buzz surrounding Dreamwave's relaunch of the Generation 1 title, even pushing it past Marvel and DC's top titles. Many comic book fans had been away from Transformers for a long time and were overjoyed to see highly detailed manga-style art driving a childhood favorite.

Dreamwave published a good deal of ''Transformers'' books, including many varied miniseries, before capitulating to the notoriously fickle comic-buying public. Towards the end of 2004 delays started getting more and more frequent. This was followed by rumors of writers and artists leaving because they weren't being paid, which were then confirmed. In early January 2005, Dreamwave declared bankruptcy, and there were no Transformers comics to be had for more than half of 2005.

{{quote|TO ME DREAMWAVE WAS MORE THAN JUST A WORD. IT'S MEANING TO ME FULLFILLS ALL OF WHAT I BELIEVE IN. SUCCESS, LOVE, FRIENDSHIP, HOPES ANS WISHES. BECAUSE HERE IN OUR DREAMS WE FIND THE FREEDOM FROM THE SHACKLES THAT THIS SOCIETY HAS LOCKED US IN REALITY.|[[Pat Lee]] [http://www.angelfire.com/pa/infrarred/infrarred4.html]}}

==History==
===The beginnings===
Dreamwave Productions was originally launched by brothers [[Pat Lee|Pat]] and [[Roger Lee]] as a studio within [[Wikipedia:Image Comics|Image Comics]] in 1996, at the height of the Image boom.

In 1998, Dreamwave would start to publish various <strike>blatantly plagiarized</strike> originally created titles such as ''[[wikipedia:Ghost in the Shell|Darkminds]]'' and ''[[wikipedia:Record of Lodoss War|Warlands]]'', as well as accepting work-for-hire assignments for other publishers such as the four-issue limited series ''Wolverine/Punisher: Revelation'' for Marvel. Other titles such as ''Shidima'', ''Fate of the Blade'' or ''Arkanium'' would follow. Furthermore, Dreamwave also collaborated with [[wikipedia:VIBE (magazine)|VIBE]] and [[wikipedia:Wizard (magazine)|Wizard: The Comics Magazine]] on various projects, developed an advertising campaign for the [[wikipedia:Dr. Martens|Dr. Martens]] shoe label and created the production designs for the music video to [[wikipedia:Janet Jackson|Janet Jackson's]] song "Doesn't Really Matter".

Initially, the "hook" for Dreamwave's financial success was the drawing style of its president, Pat Lee, which many readers viewed as "manga-like" (although readers of actual Japanese mangas had a different opinion on this matter).

===Big 80s===
[[Image:Big80sWizard.jpg|right|150px|thumb|Oh boy, were we naïve.]]
In October of 2000, issue #111 of ''Wizard: The Comics Magazine'' ran a feature named "Big 80s", featuring various popular properties of the 1980s in new interpretations by modern artists, such as ''Thundercats'' drawn by [[Jim Cheung]], ''Masters of the Universe'' drawn by Ed McGunness, ''[[G.I. Joe (franchise)|G.I. Joe]]'' drawn by J. Scott Campbell, and ''Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'' drawn by Joe Madureira. Dreamwave submitted their own take on the ''Transformers'', one of Pat's personal favorites from his childhood days, with Pat Lee himself and Alvin Lee handling the art. ''Wizard'', making suggestions for a modern ''Transformers'' comic, named Mark Millar as their number one choice for the writer of the book, with Pat Lee (aka "Mr. Mecha") on art duties.

Needless to say, the modern-style "manga"-like ''Transformers'' artwork caused an uproar in the established fandom as well as among regular comic fans who remembered ''Transformers'' from their childhoods. Seven months later, Pat got another chance of drawing Transformers characters in a feature named "How to draw Mecha" for issue #118 of ''Wizard''.

===Splitting from Image and getting the Transformers license===
[[Image:WIZautobots.jpg|left|100px|thumb|How to draw a mess of lines that look like Transformers once the colorist has salvaged it.]]
Still in 2000, a group of Dreamwave employees (including Alvin Lee, who had worked with Pat on the ''Wizard'' piece) departed from their company to form their own business, [[UDON Entertainment|UDON Studios]].

A year later, [[Hasbro]] was offering the license for new Transformers comics, which had effectively remained unused since [[Marvel Comics]]'s ''[[Transformers: Generation 2 (Marvel)|Generation 2]] '' [[A Rage in Heaven!|issue 12]] in 1994. Several companies, including Marvel (with UDON being supposed to handle the art), were interested, but all of them used the piece of artwork Dreamwave had done for ''Wizard''. Dreamwave at one point intended to cooperate with Top Cow, but Top Cow rejected the offer. Ultimately, Dreamwave decided to get the license themselves instead of going through another company, claiming that Pat Lee would only handle the art if Dreamwave got the license. Marvel ultimately backed out because of the license fee Hasbro demanded.<ref name ="litgtfspec">[http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=14153 Lying in the Gutters ''Transformers'' Special], July 2002</ref>

Dreamwave officially acquired the ''Transformers'' license in December of 2001,<ref>[http://tformers.com/New-Transformers-Comic/130/news.html TFormers confirms that Dreamwave acquired the Transformers comic license]</ref> although Hasbro would ultimately never get the license fee in full. To commemorate the new flagship title, Dreamwave officially cut all ties with Image and became an independent publisher on their own.
{{-}}

===Success of the Transformers titles===
Dreamwave's launch title, ''[[Prime Directive|Transformers: Generation 1 vol. 1]]'', written by [[Chris Sarracini]] and drawn by Pat Lee, became an instant hit, dominating Diamond's sales charts for months. Back then, rumors were circulating that Dreamwave had manipulated the market through a special deal with Diamond to ensure their success, or that Hasbro had set up an account to order large numbers of the ''Transformers'' comics. in fact Hasbro had ordered less than 200 copies per issue, primarily because they were not guaranteed free copies from their contract with Dreamwave.<ref name ="litgtfspec" /> Later that year, other companies also reported high sales of "nostalgia" titles, thus further challenging those rumors.<ref name="litgnostal">[http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=14245 Lying in the Gutters], October 2002.</ref>

Dreamwave would soon expand their range of Transformers comics to include an ongoing ''[[Armada (Dreamwave comic)|Transformers: Armada]]'' series (which later evolved into ''[[Energon (comic)|Transformers: Energon]]'' to accompany the respective toylines), initially also written by Sarricini. Although the [[War and Peace|second ''Generation 1'' volume]] was originally supposed to be written by Sarracini again, he was replaced by new writer [[James McDonough]] (who originally worked under the alias "Brad Mick"), thereby ultimately writing an entirely different story than what was originally intended.<ref>[http://tformers.com/article.php?sid=1051 TFormers citing a ''Wizard Edge'' article that hints at the originally proposed plot for Dreamwave's Transformers: Generation 1 vol. 2]</ref> With [[Original Sin|issue #5]] of the [[Transformers: Generation 1 (Dreamwave)|third ''Generation One'' volume]] (now an ongoing title), McDonough was joined by his longtime friend [[Adam Patyk]], now forming a writing duo, eventually shifting out his "Brad Mick" alias.

Furthermore, Dreamwave hired fan-favorite [[Simon Furman]] to pen various ''Transformers: The War Within'' mini-series, the first official Transformers fiction ever to be not directly based on an existing toyline. Furman would be joined by artist [[Don Figueroa]], whom Dreamwave had hired directly out of the fandom. More fan artists such as [[Guido Guidi]] and [[Joe Ng]] would soon follow Don into the professional comic book world. Meanwhile, Furman would later also take over the ''Armada'' title as a writer.

===Trouble on the horizon===
The first problems arose in late 2002, when it turned out that Dreamwave had only acquired the license for distributing ''Transformers'' titles in the USA, which resulted in a temporary hold in the international distribution until the matter was settled.<ref>[http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=580 Newsarama reporting on problems resulting from Dreamwave's lack of a license for an international release of their ''Transformers'' titles]</ref> However, Dreamwave were far from being the only company suffering from that problem, as [[Devil's Due Press]] (then part of Image Comics) were also no longer allowed to distribute their ''[[G.I. Joe (franchise)|G.I. Joe]]'' comic abroad, and other companies encountered similar problems.<ref name="litglicen">[http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=14266 Lying in the Gutters], November 2002.</ref> The problem was eventually resolved, and comics were allowed to be distributed internationally again.

Following the success of their ''Transformers'' titles, Dreamwave put their own titles ''Warlands'' and ''Darkminds'' on hold, instead focusing on other licensed books such as ''[[wikipedia:Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles|Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles]]'', numerous [[wikipedia:Capcom|Capcom]] franchises such as ''[[wikipedia:Mega_Man|Mega Man]]'', and ''[[wikipedia:Duel Masters|Duel Masters]]'' (a [[Hasbro]]-backed Japanese import card game/toyline). None of those titles would last particularly long, and some (mainly numerous Capcom titles) never even got the first issue out. This was also when rumors of creators not getting paid first came up.<ref>[http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/index.cgi?column=litg&article=1760 Lying in the Gutters reporting on early rumors of Dreamwave artists not getting paid]</ref> Rumors about a rigid "house style" committing other artists to draw in a style close to company president Pat Lee started to circulate as well, most evident in the second ''War Within'' miniseries, where the original pencils by artist [[Andrew Wildman]] were drastically reworked by the inker, with rather disappointing results.

In mid-2004, Dreamwave announced the "addition" of new creators,<ref>[http://www.brokenfrontier.com/headlines/p/detail/dreamwave-adds-transformers-creators The infamous "Dreamwave adds Transformers' creators" press release]</ref> failing to mention that this also meant the departure of Adam Patyk and James McDonough from the company. Although Dreamwave tried to contain this delicate bit of information by asking websites to consider any public statements by the two regarding their current situation with Dreamwave as "private" and thus delete them,<ref>[http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/index.cgi?column=litg&article=2033 Lying in the Gutters reporting on Dreamwave's attempt to contain information about Patyk and McDonough's firing]</ref> some sites ignored that request, thereby revealing that Patyk and McDonough were owed a significant amount of money for their work.<ref>[http://www.tformers.com/article.php?sid=3842 TFormers.com quoting a statement by Patyk and McDonough]</ref> At the same time, Pat Lee would start to do contractual work for Marvel and DC again, such as issues of ''House of M'' or ''[[Superman]]/[[Batman]]''.

===The end===
While other artists and writers, including Simon Furman, at least temporarily joined the fold of creators not getting paid by Dreamwave, Chris Sarracini was asked to rewrite the stories previously submitted by Patyk and McDonough.<ref>[http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/index.cgi?column=litg&article=2045 Lying in the Gutters reporting that even Simon Furman was temporarily not paid, and the stories by Patyk and McDonough were being rewritten]</ref> Likewise, a long-since announced ''Beast Wars'' title McDonough and Patyk had previously worked on was now supposed to be written by Furman instead. Those stories would ultimately never be published, as Hasbro had already declined to renew Dreamwave's license to publish Transformers comics by this point. <ref>[http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=14839 Lying in the Gutters reporting that Hasbro had revoked Dreamwave's ''Transformers'' license]</ref> Following numerous rumors, including one posted by [[Ben Yee]] on his own website [http://www.bwtf.com/ BWTF.com], Dreamwave officially declared bankruptcy on [[January 4]], 2005, blaming the weak United States Dollar and other scapegoats for the company's failure, including a vastly incorrect claim about Dreamwave being the "only Canadian independent comics publisher".<ref>[http://www.tformers.com/article.php?sid=4053 Dreamwave's final press release]</ref>

By this time, Pat and Roger had already spent four months secretly moving most of Dreamwave's assets to a new company named Dream Engine, whose website domain was registered to Roger's name. The existence of Dream Engine first became public in early January of 2005.<ref>[http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/index.cgi?column=litg&article=2059 Lying in the Gutters discovering the existence of Dream Engine]</ref>

===The aftermath===
The overall amount of Dreamwave's debt was far over a million dollars.<ref>[http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=14886 Lying in the Gutters' list of Dreamwave's creditors]</ref> While former Dreamwave employees never saw a single cent of the money they were owed for their work, Pat Lee repeated the performance a year later with Dream Engine, ultimately resulting in him departing from the new company and once again starting a new business, ''Pat Lee Productions''. Meanwhile, a Canadian entrepreneur named Christian Dery acquired the remaining Dreamwave assets, including the name "Dreamwave" and the rights to their "original" titles such as ''Warlands'' or ''Darkminds'', in August of 2005. Ultimately, no new Dreamwave comics would ever see the light of day, and the "new" Dreamwave ended up not paying employees ''either''.<ref>[http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/index.cgi?column=litg&article=2765 Lying in the Gutters reporting on trouble with the "new" Dreamwave]</ref> Eventually, Dreamwave II would close shop in mid-2006, selling back the remaining Dreamwave properties to Roger Lee and Dream Engine.<ref>[http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/index.cgi?column=litg&article=2769 Lying in the Gutters reporting on the final fate of the "new" Dreamwave]</ref>

[[Mike Costa]], writer on [[IDW]]'s later ''Transformers'' comics, blames Dreamwave for damaging the franchise in the US comics market: on top of some stories being, in his opinion, "not that great", the business crash meant "a lot of people got burned... a lot of stores got defaulted upon because their orders weren't being met". <ref>[http://moonbase2.libsyn.com/webpage/the-underbase-reviews-ongoing-31 The Underbase podcast interview with Mike Costa ("Special Guest")]</ref>

{{bigquote|Looking back, I'm glad I didn't do any work for Dreamwave... at the time, I'd have worked for free but it turns out everyone else at Dreamwave was doing that anyway.|[[Nick Roche]] <ref>[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIkqheta3GE Moonbase 2 interview with Roche]</ref>}}
==Japanese release==
For better or worse (likely the latter), the Dreamwave comics hold the honor of being the very first Western ''Transformers'' comics to be officially translated and published in Japan. They were published by [http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%B8%E3%83%A3%E3%82%A4%E3%83%96 JIVE Ltd.] (JIVE American Comics Series) and translated by [[Hiroto Ishikawa]] and [[Katsuya Akitomo]]. Releases began in November of 2003 and ended in December of 2004.

The graphic novels released in Japan were identical to the ones released in the US (aside from language, of course). The following collections were released:

*[[Prime Directive#International printings|Generation 1 Vol. 1]]
*[[War and Peace#Japan|Generation 1 Vol. 2]]
*[[Transformers: The War Within#Japan|The War Within Vol. 1]]
*[[Armada (Dreamwave comic)#International printings|Armada Vol. 1]]
*[[Armada (Dreamwave comic)#International printings|Armada Vol. 2]]
*[[Armada (Dreamwave comic)#International printings|Armada Vol. 3]]

This gave Japanese ''Transformers'' fans their very first glimpse, at least on an official level, of what Western ''Transformers'' comics were like. A very unfortunate first impression, to be sure.
'''''The Transformers: Regeneration One''''' is a limited series published by [[IDW Publishing]], set in the main [[Marvel Comics continuity]]. It is set 21 years after the events of [[End of the Road! (US)|issue #80]] (the final issue of the Marvel series).

The series is written by [[Simon Furman]], who also wrote the final 24 issues of the US Marvel series. Joining him is [[Andrew Wildman]] on pencils and [[Stephen Baskerville]] on inks.<ref>http://wildwords.wordpress.com/2011/12/03/transformers-regeneration-one/</ref> [[John-Paul Bove]]<ref>http://forum.idwpublishing.com/viewtopic.php?sid=8659944f841c01c44147fe1f282058cf&p=279599#279599</ref> provides colors.

Issue #80.5 will be given away as part of [[Free Comic Book Day]] on [[May 5]], [[2012]], after which the series will be published monthly (with issue #81 in July) until issue #100.<ref>http://www.allspark.com/content/view/10004/16/</ref>
The '''Marvel Comics continuity''' is the series of stories set in or extrapolated from the ''Transformers'' comic books published by [[Marvel Comics]]. The basis of the story as published in the US consists of:

* The 80 issues of [[The Transformers (Marvel comic)|the original Marvel Comics series]]
* The 4-issue ''[[G.I. Joe and the Transformers]]'' miniseries.
* The 4-issue ''[[The Transformers: Headmasters|Headmasters]]'' miniseries.

Though these 88 issues are not without the occasional internal retcon or alternate future, they form a single long and mostly cohesive story.

The Marvel Comics continuity is not a single [[Marvel Comics timeline|timeline]], however. Several different media have added to or continued the story in differing and often contradictory ways:

* '''Marvel UK''' concurrently reprinted the Marvel US stories, and also created new "filler" issues to fit in between events of the original US material. By the series' demise, 332 issues had been published. Some contradictions exist between the UK and US material, and the US crossover with G.I. Joe, though reprinted much later, was ignored in favor of a different set of stories. Once [[Simon Furman]] was on both comics, however, several concepts turned up in the UK comic—Darkwing and Dreadwind retrieving Starscream's body, the [[Demon]]s, Xaaron (before being introduced into Marvel US) and one US issue showed Mecannibals on Cybertron, a set-up for a UK-only strip! Unique to the UK material is an ever-evolving future, due to the actions of rampant time traveling characters; that future was eventually negated by events in the present, forming an alternate branch timeline. The later Marvel UK material is also home to a second major timeline divergence, namely the [[Earthforce]] stories.

* "[[Deathbringer (issue)|Deathbringer]]" and "[[Race with the Devil]]", stories from Marvel UK, are specifically referenced within the US issues. Which must've confused the hell out of American readers. On top of that, UK story "[[Out to Lunch!]]" was specifically set up in a US issue.

* Marvel US's [[Transformers: Generation 2 (Marvel)|''Generation 2'']] comic book series, published in the early 1990s, directly continued the story of the original Marvel US series. Again, differing material in the UK was published, but these two series are mostly irreconcilable, if very similar.

* ''[[Beast Wars: Transformers (franchise)|Beast Wars]]'' is seen by many fans to take place in the far future of the Marvel Comics continuity. ''Beast Wars'' was the first non-Marvel Comics material to reference the creator-god [[Primus]], and although ''Beast Wars'' and its sequel ''[[Beast Machines: Transformers (franchise)|Beast Machines]]'' mention mostly [[Generation 1 cartoon continuity]] events, it has been stated by the writers that the Generation 1 that occurs in the ''Beast Wars''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s past is an unknown mishmash of previous material. (Suffice to say that most Generation 1 continuities seem to move towards ''Beast Wars''.) For the purposes of this wiki, ''Beast Wars'' is always separated under its own continuity header.

* The ''[[Transformers: Classics|Classics]]'' fiction created by [[Fun Publications]] takes place in the Marvel Comics continuity, but it ignores both the Marvel UK material and the ''Generation 2'' comic books, creating yet another divergent [[splinter timeline]].

* In 2012, [[IDW Publishing]] will begin producing Simon Furman's ''[[Regeneration One]]'', which will continue the Marvel Comics continuity after issue 80 (with issue 80.5 premiering on [[Free Comic Book Day]]) and will run through issue 100. It will render ''Generation 2'' moot,<ref name="regen1">[http://simonfurman.wordpress.com/2011/12/03/and-now-regeneration-one/ AND NOW – REGENERATION ONE!] at [[Simon Furman]]'s blog.</ref> as well as ignore the Marvel UK storylines.<ref>[http://simonfurman.wordpress.com/2012/01/26/regeneration-one-resources/#comment-5897 REGENERATION ONE – RESOURCES « simon furman]</ref>
{{main|The Transformers (Marvel comic)}}

The very first Transformers fiction, this series begins with the original 28 Transformers characters crash-landing on Earth 4 million years ago, to be awoken in the present day by a volcanic eruption. Their war continues on Earth, centering at first on the search for fuel resources. Eventually the conflict spreads to space, the Moon, Cybertron, and various alien worlds; dozens of characters join the fight on both sides. The coming of Unicron to Cybertron marks a climax of the series, which ends soon afterwards, with the Decepticons retreating into exile.

====Futures timelines====
The main storyline takes place at the same time as the real life publication date of the comic. Several other stories were set 20 years in the future. It is implied in these future stories that something similar to the events of ''[[The Transformers: The Movie]]'' happened in the year 2006. By all appearances, these future timelines were ultimately obliterated as a result of time travel.

As originally written, the US version of "[[The Big Broadcast of 2006 (issue)|The Big Broadcast of 2006]]" is the only US story set in the future ("[[Rhythms of Darkness!]]" deals with an ''alternate'' future). However, as events unfolded in the main series, it became clear that this issue didn't quite fit into future continuity.

====[[Earthforce]]====
This series attempted to revive the moribund Transformers franchise, 2 years after the toys had left shelves in America. It directly continues the G1 series with Bludgeon's Decepticons returning and numerous references to the old series. It introduces a new faction, the "second generation" Cybertronians, who form a threat to both the Autobots and Decepticons, as well as the Swarm, a formless mass that threatens to consume all Transformers.
''Classics'' picks up 15 years after the end of the original series (the same number of years have passed in "real time" as in the stories), as a new war with Megatron seems to be on the verge of beginning after over a decade of peace and rebuilding. Decepticon forces are scattered, characters who died in the omitted ''Generation 2'' stories (like [[Nightbeat (G1)|Nightbeat]]) get a new lease on life, and [[Mini-Con|Mini-Cons]] maintain a newly-restored [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]].

* The 4-issue ''[[The Transformers: Headmasters|Headmasters]]'' miniseries.

It will render ''Generation 2'' moot,{{fact}} as well as ignore the Marvel UK storylines.<ref>[http://simonfurman.wordpress.com/2012/01/26/regeneration-one-resources/#comment-5897 REGENERATION ONE – RESOURCES « simon furman]</ref>

===''Generation 1''===

{{main|The Transformers (Marvel comic)}}

====Futures timelines====

====[[Earthforce]]====
:''(Note: The Earthforce stories are part of a divergent timeline branching from the middle of the Marvel US/UK material.)''

''Regeneration One'' picks up 21 years after the end of the original series (the same number of years have passed in "real time" as in the stories). High Councilor '''Halogen''' was the longest serving member of the High Council in the last days before the [[Autobot]]/[[Decepticon]] War began. Rumor had it that he had personally known some of the [[Thirteen|Primes]] and had helped lead Cybertron through every major event after their era. His district included many of the less reputable parts of the planet, including [[Blaster City]] and the [[Badlands (Cybertron)|Badlands]]. His greatest political ambition was to annex the neighboring [[Hydrax Plateau]]. Unfortunately he'd been struggling to do this for so long that anything he said or did was immediately assumed by all to be a grab at the plateau.
Halogen was the duly-appointed moderator of the High Council on the day [[Megatron (Prime)|Megatron]] and [[Optimus Prime (Prime)|Orion Pax]] came before them to argue for social change. Halogen demanded strict adherence to protocol and decorum during the hearing, sanctioning councilors and audience members alike for speaking out of turn. While he naturally expressed his abhorence at the terrorist violence being carried out by the "Decepticons", Halogen also seemed open to the idea of opening discussion on considering to reconsider the caste system. (It's not much, but hey, he's a politician).

A final decision on the matter of the castes was tabled, however, due to the more serious matter of [[Sentinel Zeta Prime|Sentinel Prime]]'s absence, and the lack of leadership for Cybertron. Based on previous discussions with the Hall of Records' chief archivist, [[Alpha Trion (Prime)|Alpha Trion]], and his own sincere speeches for the new "Autobot" movement for social change, Halogen represented the council's wishes to nominate Orion Pax as the new Prime: Optimus Prime. Megatron did not take well to this perceived slight and unleashed his fusion cannon, obliterating Halogen's podium and effectively ending the Council session. {{storylink|Transformers: Exodus|Exodus}}
Snarlingly condescending, he has very little regard for his industry peers, much less the [[lowtech]]s who are thankfully kept locked up in [[Axiom Nexus]]. He cares about little else besides money, power, prestige, and, most importantly, his dignity. He finds violence oddly empowering.

[[Image:Topspin&BulletbikesSpark TheComingStorm1.jpg|left|thumb|300px|Gotcher soul!]]

The last thing Bulletbike remembered for certain was the party celebrating [[RoboCo]]'s contract with the [[Transcendent Technomorph|TransTech]] Senate to provide [[Vehidrone]]s to patrol the Offworlder sectors. The next thing he knew, he was face down in a pile of putrescence, trapped in a body so lowtech it would be comical under any other circumstances. Shooed on his way by a [[Blastcharge (BM)|Security Administration officer with an odd name]], Bulletbike tried desperately to make sense of his situation. Unaccustomed to watching his own back on a dark street, Bulletbike was accosted by a [[Sling|mugger]]. Panicking, he struck back in self-defense, driving a pipe through his attacker's optic and murdering him.

Having passed out from the stress and shock, Bulletbike awoke hours later in the presence of a lowtech named [[Scrounge (G1)|Scrounge]]. Like Bulletbike, Scrounge claimed to be a [[Xaaron|'bot of greater standing]] than his form implied. Although his claims were more than dubious, Bulletbike was thankful to have at least someone to talk to who was willing to believe him. While trying to access his accounts, Bulletbike discovered the situation was worse than he had assumed. He hadn't just been aggressively downgraded, someone else was actually using his original body, posing as the real Bulletbike for all to see. Now having a face for his enemy (even if it WAS his own), Bulletbike began concocting a plan to confront his nemesis. Seeking a new source of funds since his own account was inaccessible, Bulletbike decided to borrow a trick from his earlier victim and threatened to mug an [[Skyblast (Energon)|Omnicon]] in an alleyway. When his target attempted to fight back, however, Bulletbike committed murder once more without fully intending to. While recovering the well-stocked cred-key from his latest victim, Bulletbike felt...perturbed by the lack of guilt in his processors.

At [[Swindle, Swindle & Swindle]], Bulletbike enlisted the greasy trio to perform a full-spectrum analysis of his systems to find any proof of the spark-exchange process that had trapped him in his present form. Their diagnostic failed to turn up any trace of spark-tampering, but Bulletbike did undergo some basic repairs in the process. He killed [[Skids (G1)|yet another Offworlder]] to refill his cred-purse, and then arranged to contact his arch-rival in the business world: [[Ego]], of [[C-Kar Technologies]]. Offering to reveal a fatal flaw in RoboCo's sentries for a price, Bulletbike arranged a clandestine meeting in Ego's home offices to deliver the proof and discuss terms. At C-Kar, Bulletbike attacked his rival, catching him off-guard with the sheer ferocity of the assault and paralyzing Ego's systems with a spike of [[nucleon]] before decapitating the TransTech with his own precious [[Energon Sword|Sword of Megatron]] keepsake. With Ego's guard [[Aurik]] murdered as well, Bulletbike began arming himself for an attack on his own company.

At RoboCo, Bulletbike managed to battle his way through the entire compliment of guards and confront his nemesis. The fight was brutal, and Bulletbike eventually overcame "himself" and threw the impostor out through the glass of his office. Giddy with victory, Bulletbike barely acknowledged the [[Axiom Nexus Security Administration|Security Administration]] agents who burst into the room moments later. Content with his success and believing he had reestablished his identity, Bulletbike fatefully ignored Officer [[Stungun (TransTech)|Stungun]]'s command to freeze, and dreamily stepped off the balcony to reclaim his body, plummeting to his doom. Although Bulletbike was certain of his identity, questions about what really happened continued to linger among the TransTechs long after his death... {{storylink|I, Lowtech}}

==Fiction==
===''TransTech''===
One day, Cryotek introduced himself to some new clientele, the just-arrived Autobots [[Jackpot (G1)|Jackpot]] and [[Hubcap (G1)|Hubcap]]. He kept an eye on their business, particularly when Hubcap lost a slew of credits to a regular named [[Gutcruncher (G1)|Gutcruncher]] in a game of cards. When Gutcruncher offered them an opportunity to recoup their losses, the Autobots were planning to drive straight in the other direction until Cryotek stepped in. He coolly vouched for Gutcruncher's credibility and even offered to ask his mech [[Backslash]] to keep an eye out for them at Gutcruncher's big meeting.

A few cycles later, Jackpot and Hubcap had been framed for the assassination of Gutcruncher and were on the run from everyone in [[Axiom Nexus]], from the [[Malignus|Malignus Revolutionary Army]] to [[Cheetor (TransTech)|Commander Cheetor]] and the [[Axiom Nexus Security Administration|Security Administration]]. Thanks a lot, Cryotek.

The Autobots made their way back to The Blue Deployer looking for sanctuary, but Cryotek regretfully could offer none. Although he generously offered not to turn them in to any of their new admirers, Cryotek insisted the duo vacate his premises. The Autobots eventually managed to save themselves and clear their names, but the whole situation left an itch on Commander Cheetor's back... one he suspected Cryotek could scratch. The real assailant was [[Black Shadow (Victory)|Black Shadow]], a mech in Cryotek's employ who managed to mention he had been paid for the assassination before he was killed by a mob, his head went missing and his shell got scorched beyond recognition by acid...all ensuring no further data could be extracted from him. Cheetor made a show of questioning Cryotek, but had no proof to support his theories, and so they could do little more than go through the typical dance steps: "I know you did it. You know I know. And I know you know that I know..." {{storylink|Gone Too Far}}

Although Cryotek is usually on the ball, the arrival of the [[GoBots (G1)|GoBots]] apparently didn't show up on his radar. He was caught completely unawares when Cheetor came to The Blue Deployer to inform him of the death of his employee, [[Comet]]. It seemed the busboy had been dealing with the [[Renegade]] named [[Bug Bite (G1)|Bug Bite]] and caught the raw end of the negotiation, courtesy of Bug Bite's open-palmed hand blaster. Cryotek was uncharacteristically willing to help Cheetor's investigation into Comet's death as best he could. Much fortune to Bug Bite for having escaped Axiom Nexus before Cryotek managed to settle accounts. {{storylink|Withered Hope}}
Armorhide was in the middle of his biggest night; [[Sentinel Zeta Prime|Sentinel Prime]] himself was in the audience, but the jokes just weren't firing, and the crowd was apprehensive. After all, this was ''Sentinel Prime'' in the audience. But as Armorhide was joking about his last joke bombing, Sentinel laughed... and then all hell broke loose as a squad of "[[Decepticon]]s" tore through the outer hull of the orbiting casino, right into the Great Hall where Armorhide was performing.

Armorhide was actually the last bot in the hall, surviving the onslaught and refusing to leave the stage. But the interruption made him really, really angry. So angry he even took a potshot at the passing [[Starscream (Prime)|Starscream]], Sentinel's trusted bodyguard, because the [[Seeker (body-type)|Seeker]] hadn't laughed at any of the jokes at all. Starscream paid the comedian no heed, however, and tore off through the hole in the hull back to the surface.

Realizing that the Decepticons had numerous ground units among their number, requiring some kind of transport, Armorhide peered through the hole to see their abandoned shuttle still attached to the outer wall. After a brief internal argument about whether or not he should say anything out loud even though no-one could hear him even if anyone was there to hear him and whether or not he was the kind of bot to talk to himself (apparently he was), he crawled to the shuttle and headed for the surface in order to get word of the Casino's fall to somebody at [[Iacon (polity)|Iacon]]. {{Storylink|Transformers: Exodus}}
Spanner was a neutral scientist who specialized in interdimensional engineering. The [[Decepticon|Decepticons]] on [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] had left him alone for years, but in 1986 took a sudden interest in his work and kidnapped him. [[Blaster (G1)|Blaster]] and [[Scrounge (G1)|Scrounge]] investigated his disappearance, with inconclusive results. {{storylink|The Smelting Pool!}}

Later, [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]]'s band of Autobots staged a bold attack on [[Darkmount]] as a diversion to provide an opening for Blaster to destroy the Decepticons' new space bridge. As Blaster began to lay the explosives, he was startled to find the bridge shifting around him—transforming, in fact, into Spanner himself.

Horrified at his disfigured form, Spanner attempted to open up his body to help Blaster place the explosives more easily and begged Blaster to destroy him. Spanner was only able to maintain his painful quasi-robot mode for a few short moments.

The realization that the bridge was a living being made Blaster hesitate to demolish it—A COSTLY MISTAKE! Within moments, the bridge was flooded with Decepticons, and the opportunity to destroy it (and kill Spanner) was lost. {{storylink|The Bridge to Nowhere!}}

==Notes==
* [[Bob Budiansky]] has speculated that "Spanner might have been so injured during his initial appearance that he was no longer a sentient being in subsequent appearances of the Space Bridge."<ref>[http://s90690880.onlinehome.us/jhiaxus/uscomics/spanner.htm Spanner at the Obscure Transformers Website]</ref>
:''Dai Atlas is an [[Autobot]] [[Powered Master]] from the [[Generation 1 continuity family]].''
'''Dai Atlas''' (ダイアトラス ''Dai Atorasu'') succeeded [[Star Saber (Victory)|Star Saber]] as [[Supreme Commander]] of the Autobot forces. A skilled swordsman, his prowess with a blade is considered almost equal to that of his predecessor. Dai Atlas has sworn to defeat the forces of the new [[Decepticon]] [[Emperor of Destruction]], [[Violen Jiger]], and protect the [[Zodiac]] at all costs.

Dai Atlas is a [[Powered Master]] who can combine with his partners. When combined with [[Sonic Bomber]], they become [[Sky Powered]]. When combined with [[Roadfire]], they become [[Land Powered]]. And finally, when combined with Sonic Bomber and Roadfire, the three form the massive [[Big Powered]].

Dai Atlas, along with his fellow Powered Masters, created the technological planet [[Micro|Zone]] which eventually developed the super energy source, [[Energon Z]]. After the [[Nine Great Demon Generals]] attacked and destroyed the planet [[Feminia]], and the [[Supreme Commander]] [[Star Saber (Victory)|Victory Saber]] was lost in the explosion, Dai Atlas and Sonic Bomber left to search for their leader.

The pair eventually found the injured Autobot and returned him to Zone for repairs. On Zone they received word that they were needed elsewhere, so they left for [[Earth]], to counter an attack from the Demon Generals.

[[Image:Zone daiatlas01.jpg|200px|thumb|Isn't flying too close to the sun more Dai Icarus's thing?]]
Dai Atlas and Sonic Bomber arrived just in the nick of time (because... y'know, heroes always do), saving the Autobot [[Micromaster]]s from the all-powerful Decepticons. Dai Atlas then raced [[Devastator (G1)|Devastator]] to the underground location of the [[Zodiac]], an energy source capable of creating an entire universe.

Devastator beat Dai Atlas to the punch thanks to the intervention of [[King Poseidon]], who caught the Autobot leader with a chain weapon. Devastator handed the Zodiac to Poseidon and took the chain from him, intending to kill Atlas. But Dai Atlas drove forwards using the treads in his feet and then transformed into his drill form and smashed through into a wall, killing Devastator in a flood of hot lava.

[[Image:Zone daiatlas02.jpg|left|200px|thumb|This drill tank mode can effortlessly drive through solid rock. Wait... what?]]
Free now, he chased King Poseidon to the surface, where he wrestled the Zodiac away from him. However, [[Trypticon (G1)|Trypticon]] got pissed off and unleashed his [[Energon Z Beam]], which Sonic Bomber threw himself in front of to protect Dai Atlas, nearly getting himself killed by the attack. Taking a risk, Dai Atlas unleashed the power of the Zodiac, and both he and Sonic Bomber (now healed from Trypticon's attack) transformed into their base modes and blasted Trypticon and King Poseidon into oblivion.

[[Predaking]] saw this and decided it was time to get the hell out of there. Dai Atlas pursued, riding on Sonic Bomber. He merged his wings into his Z sword and sliced Predaking neatly in half.

[[Image:Zone daiatlas04.jpg|200px|thumb|Told you so.]]
After returning to Zone with the Zodiac, Victory Saber inaugurated Dai Atlas as the new Autobot Supreme Commander. {{storylink|Enter the New Supreme Commander, Dai Atlas!}}
Following the upgrade of planet [[Micro]] into the Autobot Zone, rumors abounded that not [[Star Saber (Victory)|Victory Saber]], but a ''new'' [[Supreme Commander]] would be in command. {{storylink|Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers: Zone (story page)|Zone Part 1}}

Later, [[Violen Jiger]] ordered his [[Nine Great Demon Generals]] on a campaign to conquer planets and create a [[Decepticon Zone]] to counter the Autobot Zone. The Decepticons attacked planet [[Feminia]] and destroyed it completely, with Victory Saber lost in the destruction. However, Dai Atlas and [[Sonic Bomber]], the [[Powered Master]] space explorers, had arrived in time to rescue the badly wounded Autobot Supreme Commander. The Decepticons then shifted their focus to [[Earth]], where they hoped to obtain a powerful energy source called the [[Zodiac]]. Dai Atlas and Sonic Bomber intercepted them on Earth, defeated them, and regained the Zodiac. Impressed with Dai Atlas' courage and power, and too injured to lead any longer, Victory Saber inaugurated Dai Atlas as the new Supreme Commander of the Autobots. {{storylink|Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers: Zone (manga)|Zone}}

Dai Atlas helped to complete the Zone Operation, leaving Victory Saber relieved he had passed the role of Supreme Commander on to him. {{storylink|Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers: Zone (story page)|Zone Part 4}} Dai Atlas's mere presence enhanced the Autobots' morale by a tremendous degree and they enforced the peace of the galaxy with an even greater resolve. Soon after, Evil Spirit General [[Scorponok (G1)|BlackZarak]] attacked the Earth and took [[Landshaker]] and [[Sky Hyper]] hostage. Driven by the need to rescue their comrades, Dai Atlas and Sonic Bomber defeated BlackZarak and rescued their friends. {{storylink|Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers: Zone (story page)|Zone Part 5}}

Dai Atlas and Sonic Bomber then focused their attention on Super-God General [[Overlord (Masterforce)|Overlord]] and Saurian General [[Trypticon (G1)|Trypticon]], whom they vowed to defeat in under eight seconds. Dai Atlas took on Overlord, the strongest of the Generals, and defeated him with his "Galactic Dash" attack. {{storylink|Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers: Zone (story page)|Zone Part 6}}

Violen Jiger then created [[Metrotitan (Zone)|Metrotitan]] as a rival for Dai Atlas and unleashed him on the Lunar Zone Base on the [[Moon (moon)|Moon]]. Dai Atlas heard the SOS and rushed to aid Sonic Bomber in battle. {{storylink|Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers: Zone (story page)|Zone Part 8}} Dai Atlas arrived and combined with Sonic Bomber into [[Sky Powered]], but they were quickly frozen solid by Metrotitan's Freeze Beam Gun. Super Robot Lifeform Transformers: Zone (story page)|Zone Part 9}}

Violen Jiger at last came out of the shadows and attacked the Earth in person. Dai Atlas and the other Powered Masters attempted to stop him with their "Triple Powered Attack" but failed. Violen Jiger escaped back to the [[Tenth Planet]] with the Zodiac and a [[Galaxy Rocket]] full of hostages. Dai Atlas and the Powered Masters then combined into [[Big Powered]] and gave chase. {{storylink|Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers: Zone (story page)|Zone Part 10}}

Arriving at the Tenth Planet, Violen Jiger split into his three forms, Vion, Lenja and Igern, and attacked. Dai Atlas destroyed Vion with his Powered Cutters while Sonic Bomber and Roadfire took out the other two. However, the battle was not over. {{storylink|Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers: Zone (story page)|Zone Part 11}} Violen Jiger returned as a horrible phoenix-thing and attacked. Upgraded with the power of the Zodiac, the Powered Masters combined into Big Powered yet again, but this time their strength was enhanced thirty-fold. The Zodiac then reformed the desolate Tenth Planet into a lush utopia where [[human]]s and robots could live in harmony. {{storylink|Fight! To counter the threat of [[Dark Nova]], Dai Atlas charged the [[Battlestars]] with the task of resurrecting [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]]. ===Dreamwave comic continuity===
Dai Atlas was an [[Cybertron (G1 faction)|ancient Transformer]] from Cybertron's lost past. While searching for clues about Cybertron's history, [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] stumbled across a hidden chamber beneath the planet's surface containing two massive statues of [[Deathsaurus (Victory)|Deathsaurus]] and Dai Atlas, holding a [[Golden Disk (ancient)|golden disk]] between them. This chamber apparently told of a vast Cybertronian Empire that ended prior to recorded history. {{storylink|The Route of All Evil}}
{{-}}

===IDW comic continuity===

As the war raged across Cybertron, Dai Atlas and many other Cybertronians were horrified by the actions of both Autobots and Decepticons. They formed the [[Circle of Light]], the self-proclaimed guardians of Cybertron's pre-war culture, and dismissed the idea of factions. Dai Atlas and his allies fled their homeworld, moving further and further away as the war spread before Cybertron. Eventually, they formed a new [[Crystal City]] deep underground on a barren world, a utopian society hidden from all other Transformers. {{storylink|Drift issue 2|Drift #2}} In Old Cybertronian his name was Dei Atlas and meant 'God Map', which reflected his desire to find the legendary Knights of Cybertron, a group of Cybertronians who supposedly made Cybertron perfect and then left to spread enlightenment and peace to the rest of the universe. {{storylink|Transformers: The Death of Optimus Prime}}

Dai Atlas's utopia was threatened by its first serpent when an idealistic swordsman named [[Wing (G1)|Wing]] broke their laws and brought a Decepticon into their midst after an encounter with Slavers on the planet surface. Although Dai Atlas and [[Axe (G1)|Axe]] condemned Wing for this mistake, he insisted [[Drift (G1)|Drift]] would not be trouble. {{storylink|Drift issue 2|Drift #2}}

This proved to be false weeks later when Drift stormed into the meeting chambers and announced he had made a deal with the Slavers to sell them out for his own freedom. But, um...he didn't mean it! He hoped to stall long enough to arm the Knights of the Circle with knowledge in advance of the Slaver's attack, and catch them off-guard. Dai Atlas was furious at Drift for forcing them into a position where they'd have to fight to protect their peace, the very thing they had long criticized the Autobots for doing. When other Knights seemed prepared to listen to Drift, he refused to allow them access to the weapons vault, willing to do anything he could to ensure the Crystal City remained secret and at peace. Dai Atlas ultimately relented, but refused to have any part in the battle. As the oldest of the Knights, he had seen his share of warfare, and dreaded seeing it again. {{storylink|Drift issue 3|Drift #3}}

Safe inside Crystal City, Dai Atlas wrestled with his decision as he watched his friends and comrades battle from afar. The death of Wing at the hands of the lead Slaver was too much for him to bear, and it rekindled his fighting spirit. Dai Atlas raised Crystal City from beneath the sands and led the full compliment of Cybertronians into battle against their foes. The tide of battle turned quickly with these reinforcements, and the citizens of Crystal City soon stood triumphant. Dai Atlas declared that the Circle of Light would no longer hide in secret, and that the Knights would go forth and allow their message to be heard. He named Drift the latest of the Knights and passed on Wing's great sword to him. {{storylink|Drift issue 4|Drift #4}}

Dai Atlas's certain belief in the Knights of Cybertron was one of the reasons Drift used to try and convince others to join him and Rodimus on a quest to find them. Optimus and Prowl remained unconvinced, with Optimus describing Dai Atlas and his Circle of Light as a cult. {{storylink|Transformers: The Death of Optimus Prime}}

: Dai Atlas is a quad-changer with four distinct (well, that might be stretching it a bit) modes. Robot mode, drill-tank, 'jet' and base mode. He contains a battery-powered motor as a gimmick which could rotate the treads on his legs, allowing him to move under his own power in vehicle and robot mode and spins his drill.
*Oddly enough, in the industry pitch reel included as a special feature (under 'ads') on the Madman Victory DVD set, all of Dai Atlas's action features are demonstrated using the Micromaster Freewheeler, and not Speeder. Sonic Bomber, on the other hand, is demonstrated using Sonic.

*During the [[title sequence]] for the ''Zone'' OVA there is a strange mini-montage of shots of Dai Atlas (all of the cartoon screencaps of his robot mode on this page are from that montage) including... a random shot of him from behind.

[[Image:BraveGoryuModel.jpg|right|180px|thumb|Ronald McDonaldpants.]]
* The Dai Atlas toy was [[redeco]]ed in Takara's ''[[Brave (franchise)|Brave Express Might Gaine]]'' toyline as "Gōryū" (轟龍), which served as the second mech of the series's anti-hero, Joe Raibaru. The [[character model]] was altered in various ways, such as straightened wings in robot mode and a creepier face, but the toy itself had no remolding—although the Gōryū toy did lack Dai Atlas's shield handle, for some strange reason. In a seeming nod to the toy's ''Transformers'' origins by the ''Brave'' staff, the robot was originally dubbed "Atlas" by its creator on the show, but Joe chose to rename it to his liking. Dai Atlas's design was also used for the "Atlas Mk.II" drones from the same series, which were never made as toys.

* ''[[Transformers: Universe (2003 franchise)|Universe]]'' [[King Atlas]] was created as an [[homage]] to Dai Atlas. The character's lack of any form of bio meant that for years, there existed the possibility he ''was'' Dai Atlas (thanks to ''Universe's'' multi-dimensional story). Eventually though, King Atlas was established as his own separate character from the [[Unicron Trilogy]] [[continuity family]] in "[[Force of Habit]]".
