:''Ultra Magnus is an [[Autobot]] from the [[Generation 1 continuity family]].''

[[Image:Ultramagnusg1.jpg|right|300px|thumb|He can't deal with you now!]]
'''Ultra Magnus''' feels he is a soldier and nothing more. He very much prefers taking orders to giving them, and even avoids opportunities for higher responsibility. But when he is forced into those opportunities, he betrays his real talent for the job. He's strong, resolute, dependable, selfless, and courageous. Sadly, Ultra Magnus is the only Autobot who doesn't realize this.

Believing he is nothing but a soldier, Ultra Magnus is perfectly willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good if need be. He knows he's more powerful than the average Autobot, and will throw himself at larger threats accordingly. He is respected by both the Autobots ''and'' Decepticons, due to his courage and self-sacrifice. There is a special enmity between him and [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]] for this reason, for Galvatron may be the most deadly foe of all. (Also, Galvatron, given his mental state, probably doesn't approve of people he's had blown up getting back up afterward. This can be seen as a sore point for Magnus, too.)

He is sometimes [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]]'s [[Relatives|brother]].

{{main|Ultra Magnus (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity}}

Ultra Magnus was appointed Commander of [[Autobot City]] some time before 2005. During the [[Battle of Autobot City]], he could not prevent many of his troops and the reinforcements being slaughtered, including [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Optimus Prime]]. Still, honoring Ultra Magnus for his efforts, Optimus handed him the [[Matrix of Leadership]] and command of the Autobots. The Matrix had other ideas though, choosing [[Hot Rod (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Rodimus Prime]] as its bearer instead. Ultra Magnus was okay with that and became Rodimus Prime's trustworthy [[second-in-command]].

Despite not being the Prime, Ultra Magnus became a second archenemy to the [[Decepticon leader]] [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]]. The two had many, many fights, and in between, Ultra Magnus also had to deal with the archrival he found in Galvatron's second-in-command [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]].

During the [[Hate Plague]] outbreak in 2006, Ultra Magnus was one of the infected. He was cured when a revived Optimus Prime unleashed the energy of the Matrix. With everything back to normal and leadership passed back from Rodimus to Optimus, Ultra Magnus became somewhat of a second-in-command to the latter. He was taken out of commission by a grand scale Decepticon assault on Cybertron, but survived to see the next Cybertronian [[Golden Age]].

===Ladybird books continuity===
[[Image:Ladybird magnus.jpg|left|thumb|250px]]
Following the mysterious disappearance of Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus travelled to Earth from Cybertron to take over leadership of the Autobots. Under his leadership, the Autobots established Metroplex as a city to live in, and yet were still able to keep their existence a secret from humanity at large. Nice work, Magnus!

With the Autoots' supply of [[cybernite]] running low, Ultra Magnus organized a salvage operation to potentially recover a supply of the material from wreckage strewn about an old battlefield that Kup would lead them to. Magnus's concerns grew when the Decepticons attacked the salvage team, apparently having known of their movements in advance, and the Autobots soon deduced that the villains had a network of spy satellites in orbit, watching them. Following Kup's advice, Magnus had [[Huffer (G1)|Huffer]] and [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] build a power generator that beamed false messages to the satellites, tricking them into colliding with each other and exploding. Magnus congratulated the Autobots on their team effort, declaring that teamwork was the only way to ultimately triumph over the Decepticons. {{storylink|Galvatron's Air Attack}}

When a small Decepticon attack force was able to penetrate Metroplex's security perimeter, Ultra Magnus had Bumblebee follow them upon their retreat in hopes of learning how the breach occurred. Bumblebee discovered that the Decepticons had been able to progressively sneak through the Autobots' spy screen and set up a base within a nearby industrial estate. Magnus led the Autobots in an attack on the Decepticon hideout, during which he faced off with Galvatron himself. Magnus stumbled and fell before the Decepticon leader, but Spike Witwicky saved him by downing Galvatron with a wrecking ball. {{storylink|Decepticon Hideout}}
{{quote|This is a time of great sorrow, fellow Autobots. But it is also a time to sense our purpose and with it—seize the future.|Magnus receives the [[Matrix of Leadership|Autobot Leadership Matrix]]}}

[[Image:MatrixCoconut1.jpg|right|thumb|250px|Oh, Prime, you shouldn't have. No, really.]]

In an alternate 2005, Ultra Magnus served as commander of [[Autobot City]] and directed the Autobots’ counter-offensive when the city came under [[Battle of Autobot City|attack]] from [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] and the [[Decepticon]]s. He directed [[Springer (G1)|Springer]] and [[Arcee (G1)|Arcee]] to transform the city into battle station mode, and after a strenuous battle, [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] was mortally wounded. On his deathbed, Optimus passed the [[Matrix of Leadership|Autobot Leadership Matrix]] on to Ultra Magnus. Despite his own misgivings, Magnus took possession of Matrix and became the new leader of the Autobots. {{storylink|The Planet-Eater!}}

Magnus’s leadership did not get off to an easy start, when reports came in from the Autobots stationed on Cybertron’s moons of [[Unicron]], a monster planet that was in the process of consuming them. Magnus quickly arranged for the Autobots to head to Cybertron aboard two shuttles, but en route to Cybertron, they were attacked by Decepticon forces led by [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]], the upgraded form of Megatron. In a last-ditch effort to lose the Decepticons, Magnus ordered an emergency separation of the shuttle. After Galvatron destroyed the jettisoned portion of the vessel (and declared the Matrix destroyed), Magnus and his crew landed their craft on the [[Junkion (planet)|Planet of Junk]] for repairs. {{storylink|Judgment Day!}} Facing Galvatron solo, Magnus attempted to open the Matrix, but the talisman did not respond, and Magnus was torn to pieces by the [[Sweep]]s. Thankfully, Ultra Magnus was soon repaired by the native [[Junkion (species)|Junkions]] after they befriended the Autobots. Magnus joined the other Autobots in the battle with Unicron on Cybertron, which resulted in the young Autobot [[Hot Rod (G1)|Hot Rod]] opening the Matrix to destroy Unicron, becoming Rodimus Prime. {{storylink|The Final Battle!}}

[[Image:FinalBattle-drawnandquartered.jpg|left|thumb|300px|The Decepticons confuse Magnus for Stretch Armstrong.]]

In 2006, Ultra Magnus, [[Hot Rod (G1)|Rodimus Prime]], and [[Blaster (G1)|Blaster]] traveled in [[Omega Supreme (G1)|Omega Supreme]] to [[Junkion (planet)|Junkion]] to investigate some strange goings-on there. Once there, the Autobots discover a chaotic scene where aliens from many worlds, including the Decepticons, had arrived and were all engaged in a deadly battle with one another while also attacking them. Blaster discovered a signal coming from space that seemed to be hypnotizing everyone. Ultra Magnus and Blaster hatched a plan which involved Blaster playing soothing music, while Omega Supreme carried him into the air. The music calmed the combatants and cleared Galvatron's mind long enough for him to blast the [[Junkion (species)|Junkions]]' television, which he recognized had influenced his mind. This broke the spell on everybody. The Junkions turned on the Decepticons, which caused them to retreat.

Ultra Magnus then expressed curiosity as to the source of the hypnotic messages, but Rodimus didn't care as long as they had ended for good. They never discovered that it was the work of the [[Quintesson]]s. {{storylink|The Big Broadcast of 2006 (issue)|The Big Broadcast of 2006 (US)}}
{{bigquote|Does your pathetic Autobot code demand ''sacrifices''? Must I destroy you to stop you?!|Galvatron}}
{{bigquote|''Yes''.|Ultra Magnus}}

The remaining Autobot elders spent years designing Ultra Magnus, a leader to lift the resistance out of a deep darkness. He was finally given life in or shortly before 1986<ref>Ultra Magnus profile in Marvel UK #81</ref> for [[Operation: Volcano]]. His role was to act as the crucial back-up needed for the [[Wrecker]]s to successfully destroy their Decepticon targets and then escape in one piece. A serious complication arose when the Matrix Flame, the sacred and eternal blaze linked directly to the [[Matrix of Leadership|Creation Matrix]] itself, suddenly extinguished. Fearing that something catastrophic had occurred on Earth to the Matrix and its bearer, Optimus Prime, Emirate Xaaron made the decision to send Ultra Magnus to that planet to investigate, even though Operation Volcano was unstoppably set to begin in ten cycles. Magnus traveled to Earth by way of [[space bridge]], and found the Ark's crew engaged in a deadly conflict with three new, yet unspeakably powerful, Decepticon warriors just as their leaders Optimus Prime, [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]], and [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]] vanished before their optic sensors. Initially concerned only with his investigation of Prime's sudden disappearance, Ultra Magnus ignored the plight of his fellow Autobots until he learned the two situations were linked; [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]] and his lieutenants were time-travelers from 2006, having employed a mass-substitution mechanism that sent the three Autobots into limbo in order to accommodate their presence at this point in the timeline. This connection was revealed to him by three Autobots from 2006, who had traveled back in time themselves in order to stop Galvatron. They had a plan; they had the means; all they needed was for Ultra Magnus to keep him busy for, oh... an hour or two.

Easier said than done.

Magnus' battle with Galvatron carried them out of the isolated wilderness and onto a human freeway system. It ended when Ultra Magnus threw a tanker truck full of fuel into the path of Galvatron's [[particle cannon]]. Galvatron walked away from the blast — Magnus didn't. Still, the future Autobots succeeded in tricking Galvatron into returning to the future with his plan incomplete, and the timeline more-or-less preserved. Unfortunately, Magnus was out of time: Operation Volcano proceeded without him, with disastrous results. Only one Decepticon was taken out, and the Wreckers' leader Impactor was killed protecting Xaaron. {{storylink|Target: 2006}}

[[Image:Galvatron V Magnus UK87.jpg|left|300px|thumb|Gatorade. Is it in you?]]
Ultra Magnus would not meet his counterpart, Optimus Prime, until Prime was inadvertently transported back to Cybertron in battle with Megatron. Hooking up with [[Straxus (G1)|Lord Straxus]] at [[Polyhex]], [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] quickly disseminated false information about a new Decepticon made over to look exactly like Optimus Prime, planning to infiltrate the Autobot forces. Having temporarily assumed control of the Wreckers until their new leader, [[Springer (G1)|Springer]], was ready for command, Ultra Magnus led them in hunting down the "impostor". This Prime's behavior led Magnus to be suspicious of his information and, after summoning Emirate Xaaron, confirmed his suspicions and welcomed the true Optimus Prime back to Cybertron. {{storylink|Distant Thunder!}}

Prime wasted no time leading Magnus and the others on a series of successful raids and strike missions against Decepticon-controlled territory. When Optimus decided to return home to Earth, however, Ultra Magnus was caught up in the space bridge's energy discharge as well, arriving on Earth but some considerable distance away from where Prime materialized. Having been frustrated ever since Impactor's death, Magnus welcomed the "vacation" this trip to Earth would provide him, and he took his time trying to track down the Ark's location. {{storylink|Resurrection!}}

[[Image:Magnus V Galvatron Burning Sky.jpg|right|300px|thumb|Holy hell.]]
For months, Ultra Magnus enjoyed a peaceful life in the American forests and wilderness, alone with his thoughts. A sudden seismic disturbance brought him back to reality, though, and into contact with three human females whose vehicle had been overturned by the tremor. One in particular, Cindy, took quite a liking to Magnus. As they traveled together to explore a nearby volcano and its connection to the tremors, Magnus was forced back into combat thanks to the arrival of his old sparring partner, the future Decepticon known as Galvatron. {{storylink|Burning Sky!}} Galvatron had constructed a [[power siphon]] atop the volcano's peak, and planned to convert the raw power of a volcanic eruption into enough energy to transform him into a god. Ultra Magnus teamed up with several Autobots from the future, who were trying to bring Galvatron back with them to face justice. Once again, Magnus was used as a "distraction" (read: living punching bag) while the future Autobots set up their plan to override Galvatron's time-jump mechanism and send them all back where they came from. Despite Ultra Magnus successfully getting the slag beat out of him, the override proved unsuccessful, sending only the Autobots back to 2007 and leaving Magnus virtually alone to deal with the fighting-mad Galvatron. {{storylink|Fire on High!}} Barely managing to rally his courage, Ultra Magnus threw himself into combat with Galvatron one more time, keeping him busy until the volcano exploded, destroying the power siphon and encasing both warriors in molten lava. {{storylink|Vicious Circle!}}

[[Image:Magnus V Galvatron %22Salvage%21%22.jpg|left|300px|thumb|Kick the baby!]]
Several months later, Ultra Magnus was dug out of the volcano by the [[Sparkabot|Sparkler Mini-Bots]]. They had been sent to Earth by Springer to monitor the volcano in case Galvatron ever got free. When Galvatron DID free himself several days earlier, though, they found themselves hopelessly outmatched, and hoped Magnus would have better luck. Sadly, the severe beatings Galvatron had routinely handed out to Ultra Magnus, combined with the final excruciating submergence in molten lava, had nearly unhinged the Autobot's mind, leaving him with a pathological fear of his tormentor. Confronted with Galvatron, Magnus would probably have gone fetal if that pose had any meaning for his people. As the Sparklers heroically tried to stand up to Galvatron anyway, Ultra Magnus saw his rescuers in grave danger and finally managed to push his fear aside and reclaim enough confidence to batter the Decepticon into a temporary retreat. {{storylink|Salvage!}}

Having renewed his fighting spirit, Ultra Magnus arranged to return to Cybertron with his companions in order to report on Galvatron's activities and hopefully gather the Wreckers for a counter-offensive. Instead, they found the Autobot base in Kalis full of battle signs, and the entire surrounding city-state a virtual "ghost-town". {{storylink|City of Fear!}} After confronting a legion of robot zombies, the Autobots eventually learned that a crazed scientist named [[Flame (Marvel)|Flame]] was trying to re-engineer the entire planet as a giant spacecraft, setting off an unstable fusion reactor beneath the planet's surface as a power source. With the help of the Wreckers and the Decepticons [[Flywheels]] and [[Trypticon (G1)|Trypticon]], Ultra Magnus and his team managed to put an end to Flame's maniacal scheme. {{storylink|Meltdown!}}

Ultra Magnus and the Wreckers then began preparations to return to Earth and confront the threat of Galvatron, finally, once and for all, and then... *poof*. The Wreckers went to Earth alone, and Ultra Magnus was never seen nor heard from again. {{storylink|Deadly Games!}}

====Marvel UK future timelines====
In 2003, Ultra Magnus began plans for the construction of [[Autobot City]] on Earth, a transforming fortress that would better defend the Autobot secrets than the old [[Ark (G1)|Ark]]. In order to accomplish the construction, Magnus made agreements with the various Earth governments to acquire materials for the building and fortification of the city. To collect these materials, he assembled a massive convoy of Autobots to ride out to all corners of the world and acquire the necessary parts. In order to secure the secrecy of the city's plans, he had [[Blurr (G1)|Blurr]] secretly transmit the necessary data to the Earth governments on a hyper-speeded signal, while Kup carried a dummy disk on a decoy mission. The [[Stunticon (G1)|Stunticons]] attacked Kup and stole the disk, thereby fooling the Decepticons into thinking they had access to the true specifications. {{storylink|Ark Duty}} A year later, Autobot City opened its doors and invited a delegation of human visitors to the ceremony. Despite a brief attack by [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] and the Decepticons, the opening went rather smoothly, and Autobot City became the new base of operations on Earth. {{storylink|Aspects of Evil!}}

[[Image:Soundwaveconsiders.jpg|left|thumb|250px|One look at Magnus is all Soundwave needs to prolong the Civil War for another 4 million years.]]

After the destruction of Unicron in 2006, Ultra Magnus became a top adviser to the Autobots' new commander, Rodimus Prime. As the war for territory on Cybertron continued, Magnus was seen leading [[Jazz (G1)|Jazz]], [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]] and [[Cliffjumper (G1)|Cliffjumper]] as a fighting unit during a [[Airborne hunter squad|Decepticon air strike]]. {{storylink|Wanted: Galvatron — Dead or Alive!}} In 2008, he fought alongside the Autobots when a major Decepticon counter-offensive was initiated by Scourge and Cyclonus in the name of their master, Unicron. He and Kup continued to spearhead the Autobot battle effort on Cybertron when Rodimus Prime traveled to the [[Junkion (planet)|Planet of Junk]] to confront Unicron, and the Decepticons were ultimately driven off. {{storylink|The Legacy of Unicron!}} Sometime later, [[Eject]] relayed a distress signal to Ultra Magnus at [[Autobase]], requesting aid at certain coordinates against an alien attack. With Autobot City: Earth off-line and Rodimus out with a sizable portion of their troops to check on it, Magnus was reluctant to jump into such a potential trap. Still, his better nature ultimately won out, and Ultra Magnus led an Autobot troop assortment out to answer the call. Surprisingly, he found [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] and the Decepticons under heavy fire from the Quintessons, and ended up fighting side-by-side with his arch-rival for the good of the entire planet. Despite some signs of wavering by Soundwave, the peace ultimately didn't last, though, and the war would continue. {{storylink|Space Pirates!}}

[[Image:TimeWars-Magnusdies.jpg|right|400px|thumb|"Finally, I can get my closure with Galvatro—okay, what the hell is this?"]]

In 2009, the long running loose-end of Galvatron being active in the past came back to haunt the Autobots, as a timestorm began raging at both 1989 and 2009, threatening all of existence. To deal with the problem, Ultra Magnus accompanied Rodimus Prime and several other Autobots back to 1989 to retrieve Galvatron...one way or another. Their mass-displacement caused confusion upon arrival, though, and led to a brief battle with their own 1989 Autobot counterparts. Ultra Magnus managed to fight off both [[Slag (G1)|Slag]] and [[Sludge (G1)|Sludge]] of the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobots]] before he found someone willing to listen—1989's [[Bumblebee (G1)|Goldbug]], who had seen the mass-displacement effect before. Some late-coming Decepticons attempted to silence Goldbug before he could bring peace to the Autobot factions, but in the end the sight of Ultra Magnus carrying Goldbug's wounded body made an even MORE poignant appeal for peace. This ultimately led to an alliance between all four factions involved: the 1989 and 2009 Autobot and Decepticon factions. They were going to need it, as Galvatron had joined forces with his own "past self", [[Straxus (G1)|Megatron]]. During the battle, Ultra Magnus traded fire with both Megatron and Galvatron, but Galvatron then used the oh-so-tenuous alliance against Magnus by tricking him into firing on [[Scorponok (G1)|Scorponok]], leader of the 1989 Decepticons. Scorponok's henchmen ([[Mindwipe (G1)|Mindwipe]], [[Snapdragon (G1)|Snapdragon]] and [[Triggerhappy]]) quickly forgot the alliance after seeing that, and tore into Ultra Magnus without any regards for the more serious consequences at stake. The damage Magnus suffered from their attack was severe and, after the battle was over and the timestorm abated, his deactivated body was seen being carried by his future Autobot comrades. Magnus's final fate is unknown. {{storylink|Time Wars}}

In an alternate future of 2510, the Decepticons were at last defeated, and Rodimus Prime planned to step down as Autobot leader. He announced [[Springer (G1)|Springer]] as his replacement, but an Autobot named [[Triton]] jumped in to contradict the decision, saying that Ultra Magnus was a much better choice to lead the Autobots in times of peace, not to mention the fact that he had already been chosen to carry the Matrix once before. Springer's combat unit, the [[Wrecker|Wreckers]], didn't take kindly to Triton's comments, but then the [[Technobot (G1)|Technobot]]s jumped to the defense of Ultra Magnus and, as one thing led to another, shots were fired and fighting broke out among the Autobots. As the first bodies hit the floor, it became clear that a new war was beginning, and none of the Autobots were the wiser that Triton (the instigator of it all and one of the first casualties) had actually been a Decepticon deep-cover agent in disguise. {{storylink|Peace}}
Ultra Magnus left [[Hot Rod (G1)|Hot Rod]] in charge of Cybertron while he took off in [[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress Maximus]] to check out a strange [[energon]] reading they'd detected on an asteroid. When [[Lightspeed (G1 Technobot)|Lightspeed]] discovered a [[Observer|small alien]], Magnus reminded him that they were Autobots and sworn to protect all life. Lightspeed's tests determined that the creature converted its food into Energon, leading Magnus to send [[Searchlight (G1)|Searchlight]] out in search of more of the creatures. Not long after, the Autobots were found by [[Ratbat (G1)|Ratbat]], and they pursued the small Decepticon until they ran into more Decepticons, resulting in a pitched battle. {{storylink|The Test (issue)|The Test}}
Following [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]]'s destruction of Cybertron's Energon supply, [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] contacted Ultra Magnus in [[Metroplex (G1)|Metroplex]] and ordered him to take a team to find [[Metascan Alpha]]. Magnus took [[Kup (G1)|Kup]], [[Doublecross]], [[Grotusque]], and [[Repugnus (G1)|Repugnus]] with him, using [[Sky Lynx (G1)|Sky Lynx]] as transport. They eventually reached a desolate moon, on which they were attacked by [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]] and the [[Terrorcon (G1)|Terrorcons]], but Magnus insisted they ignore the Decepticons and continue with their mission. Retreating to Sky Lynx, they flew down to the planet to find a rapidly-evacuating city under attack from the [[Destructon]]s.

The Autobots engaged the enemy, only to find themselves outclassed. Ultra Magnus was blasted by [[Lord Imperious Delirious]] and fought the confusion the Delirious Fire brought to his mind in order to sound a retreat. Kup sacrificed himself to allow the rest of the Autobots to escape, but Sky Lynx only had enough energy to reach the moon, and the Destructons were able to catch up. 6.5 million years ago, when his brother [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] and the Decepticon leader [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] vanished in a [[space bridge]] incident, the Autobots looked to Ultra Magnus for leadership. Magnus fled and exiled himself, believing he wasn't ready.

[[Image:Grimlockultramagnusnoooo.jpg|right|thumb|250px|It's funny because Magnus thinks Grimlock can die.]]

But half a million years later, Magnus re-emerged, finding the Autobots had fragmented themselves into different camps. Despite his fears about his inadequacy, Magnus managed to reunite the Autobots and retake Cybertron city by city, until finally, the Autobots were all but assured victory. [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]]'s Decepticons and [[Ratbat (G1)|Ratbat]]'s [[Ultracon]]s were ready to surrender. The moments before a peace treaty was to be signed at [[Tyger Pax]], Ultra Magnus brooded in his chambers, alone, cursing Optimus Prime for his "heroic" sacrifice that nonetheless left his race to carry the torch themselves. [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] and his [[Predacon (War Within)|Predacons]], however, wouldn't go so quietly, and they staged an insurrection. Though, regrettably, Starscream assassinated the surviving members of the [[Council of Ancients]], Ultra Magnus was able to lead his Autobots, the Ultracons, and the Decepticons successfully against the Predacon insurrection. As the Predacons were arrested, [[Grimlock (G1)|Grimlock]] took an assassin's bullet meant for Ultra Magnus, apparently killing the Dynobot. Magnus, overcome with grief, cradled Grimlock's body in his arms and audibly mourned.

This would not be the day's only setback, to say the least. Amid the chaos of Grimlock's death, Megatron had somehow returned, backed up by the [[Air Warrior|Aerospace Extermination Squadron]]. {{storylink|The Age of Wrath}} The peace Magnus had struggled for immediately crumbled.
Fewer than four million years ago, after Optimus Prime and Megatron disappeared once again, this time with dozens of their best warriors on board the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]] and the [[Nemesis (G1)|Nemesis]], Ultra Magnus and Shockwave worked together to replenish their armies in the [[Little Iacon]] incident. Many of the [[Micromaster]]s created resented Ultra Magnus and Shockwave for bringing them into their war. {{storylink|Transformers: Micromasters}}

In the present day, Ultra Magnus was reactivated following the [[Great Shutdown]], {{storylink|Revelation (War and Peace)|Revelation}} and begrudgingly took the role of security officer under [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]], who had ushered in a new peace. Though Magnus suspected Shockwave had some shady personal projects, he thought the threat of these were minimal compared to the greater promise of peace, and willingly helped Shockwave.

Ultimately, in 2003, Optimus Prime and the rest of the missing Autobots were discovered on a planet called Earth, where Prime and Megatron had awakened and rekindled the Transformer Civil War there. Ultra Magnus and a team of Decepticons traveled to Earth and approached Prime's Autobots, asking for their understanding and their surrender, lest they disrupt Cybertron's new peace. {{storylink|New World Order}} Though a few were willing to give in to Magnus, most were not. Optimus Prime sent a team of Autobots secretly out the back door, while the rest of his troops approached Magnus and submitted to his demands. Prime still harbored ill feelings towards his brother, and in moment of weakness, Prime punched Magnus to the floor, calling him a traitor.

[[Image:Wreckersdw.jpg|right|thumb|250px|When it comes to group shots, Magnus isn't a team player.]]

Ultra Magnus transported his captives to Cybertron, where Shockwave announced that for the good of Cybertron, Prime and the others would be deactivated. {{storylink|Brothers' Burden}} Magnus, of course, disapproved, and he angrily confronted Shockwave. Shockwave showed Magnus footage of Optimus Prime and Megatron in a recent, heated battle in [[San Francisco]], and this did not flatter the mental state of the combatants. Still, Magnus was not convinced, and he went to the [[Autobot High Council|High Council]] to address his fears of giving Shockwave too much control. His audience with the council was interrupted by grave news: the [[Stunticon (G1)|Stunticons]] had been unleashed from [[Detention Banks|prison]], and [[Menasor (G1)|Menasor]] was tearing apart [[Iacon (polity)|Iacon]]. In response, Ultra Magnus assembled the [[Wrecker]]s. {{storylink|Cold War (issue)|Cold War}}
Though casualties were high, Ultra Magnus was able to take down Menasor by turning his components against its team leader, [[Motormaster (G1)|Motormaster]]. While Menasor was confused, Magnus rammed into him in vehicle mode, separating the combiner. Suspecting Shockwave was somehow behind all this, Magnus left to confront him. On his way there, Magnus put a missile in Grimlock's head, quelling the Dinobots' own little rampage. {{storylink|Passive Aggression}} Magnus ordered [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]] to put them into the [[CR chamber]]s immediately.

Finally, Ultra Magnus arrived in [[Shockwave's Tower|Shockwave's throne room]] and ordered the former Decepticon to stand down. Shockwave had a different idea and shot him in the back. As Magnus staggered out, he met Prime, who was also on his way to tussle with Shockwave, and he apologized to his brother for going astray. Magnus collapsed. {{storylink|Countdown to Extinction (issue)|Countdown to Extinction}} A short time later, he got up to his feet and slowly made his way back into the throne room, though he was crumbling as he went. When he reached his destination, Magnus had shed his super robot form, leaving only his smaller inner robot. Seeing Prime had been defeated, Magnus attacked Shockwave. Though Ultra Magnus lost his arm to Shockwave's ruthlessness, Magnus was ultimately able to toss Shockwave into the pit in the center of the room. Grimlock carried both Prime and Magnus's heavily-damaged forms out of the throne room, but not without insulting them constantly. Magnus, like Prime, suspected that despite Shockwave's defeat, their hardships were only just beginning. {{storylink|Revelation (War and Peace)|Revelation}}

Optimus Prime was kept in stasis due to his minor injuries, while despite the complete destruction of his armor and the removal of his arm, Ultra Magnus was quickly reassembled and back on duty. Ultra Magnus was among the Autobot forces resisting [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]]'s rule of Cybertron, and was shocked when he witnessed [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] get zapped by energy and vanishing. Investigating the disappearance along with [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]], Magnus found that the powerful [[Teletran 3]] computer had malfunctioned and sent various Cybertronians dispersed throughout various points in Earth's timeline. After erecting a [[force field]] around Teletran 3 to prevent Shockwave and his forces from taking control of it, Ultra Magnus made a plan together with the [[G.I. Joe (team)|G.I. Joes]] and [[Cobra]] members whom had been transported to Cybertron by the computer. As he was feeding the force field with his own power and Perceptor was operating Teletran 3, it was up to the humans to travel back in time and retrieve the lost Transformers, or else time travel "feedback" would lead to the destruction of Earth. Countless years later, in the present day, Magnus was an agent of the [[Tyrest Accord]], upholding the [[Code of Interplanetary Conflict]], a treaty between Autobots, Decepticons and other alien races. After arresting the criminal, Magnus reluctantly released Swindle in exchange for the current whereabouts of an even greater offender: [[Scorponok (G1)|Scorponok]]. Magnus had a personal grudge against Scorponok, who was the Autobot's polar opposite; while Magnus set great stock in rules, Scorponok flouted them. After the break-in on Garrus-9, Ultra Magnus told Optimus Prime that he was heading there to follow up on the escaped prisoners, but received a distress call from [[Hound (G1)|Hound]] and changes course to assist their crew. Magnus arrived in time to help drive off [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]] and together, they tracked him to [[Corata-Vaz]]. After Cyclonus activated the [[Nega-Core]], he hesitated activating the guardian, [[Thunderwing (G1)|Thunderwing]], due to the destruction he caused Cybertron. Several years later, after the fall of many Autobot strongholds and the subsequent defeat of Megatron on Earth, Ultra Magnus and his human stowaway [[Verity Carlo]] transported the Wreckers to Garrus-9, the Autobot penal colony which had been overrun by the Decepticons. En-route, they encountered a battered Decepticon dropshop emitting a distress signal that failed to acknowledge any hailing frequencies, which then subsequently exploded. Magnus was shocked to discover that a survivor had successfully escaped the ship's destruction, and even more shocked that it was the notorious former commander of the Wreckers, [[Impactor]]. {{Storylink|Last Stand of the Wreckers issue 1|Last Stand of the Wreckers #1}} Magnus watched as [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]] tinkered with Impactor's head, noting that the former Wrecker probably had an explosive [[deterrence chip]] embedded into his cranium from his imprisonment at Garrus-9. When Impactor told the story of his escape and what had occurred at the prison, even the usually taciturn Ultra Magnus was disturbed by the revelation that the powerful [[Infiltration protocol|phase-six]] Decepticon [[Overlord (Masterforce)|Overlord]] was now in charge of G-9, and suggested that perhaps they should delay the mission. After [[Springer (G1)|Springer]] and Impactor got into an argument over who was in charge and what the latter did that got him sent to G-9 in the first place, Ultra Magnus managed to convince Springer that Impactor had been through an awful lot, and that he was a valuable aspect that was needed for this mission. However, Magnus declined to personally involve himself with the mission, so he could to turn a blind eye to the Wreckers' often-brutal methods, and because [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]] had requested his presence back on Earth. Also, Prowl gave him a name, something that would be of importance to both Springer and Magnus: [[Aequitas]]. During the mission briefing, Magnus revealed to the other Wreckers it wasn't [[Skyquake (G1)|Skyquake]] that was up against them, but the infamous Overlord, prompting Kup to tell Verity of the time he faced Overlord on [[Caldoon 4]] and barely survived. With the younger Wreckers clearly rattled by the tale, Ultra Magnus reminded Kup that they had talked about the elder Autobot's perchant for "talking up the enemy". Twenty minutes before launch, Magnus discussed [[Ironfist (G1)|Ironfist]]'s strange blackouts with Springer, though the Wrecker was inclined to give his subordinate the benefit of doubt. As the Wreckers (and unbeknownst to them, Verity) launched their drop pods to Garrus-9, Ultra Magnus wished them luck and intoned an old Cybertonian proverb: [[Rite of the Autobrand|"May your wires never cross and your luster never dull"]]. {{Storylink|Last Stand of the Wreckers issue 2|Last Stand of the Wreckers #2}}
Arriving on Earth, Ultra Magnus reiterated his position as an enforcer of the Tyrest Accord, and demanded to know which of the local Autobots was in charge. {{storylink|New Arrivals, Old Encounters}} With the remaining Autobots left at the caves before him, Ultra Magnus tried to allay their concerns by attempting to use the local Earth slang and idioms related to criminal investigations, with only served to cause confusion. [[Image:SeasonsInFlight-RodimusMagnus.jpg|right|thumb|300px|WOOKIEE RAGE!]]

After tracking the Autobot splinter group down, Ultra Magnus laid out a series of legal quibbles that would make it impossible for the self-styled "Rodimus Prime" to leave Earth and demanded the dismantling of the rocket they were building. The situation turned ugly when Magnus spotted Swindle among the Decepticons in Rodimus' group, and attempted to arrest him. Citing Rodimus' violations of the law and collusion with the Decepticons, Magnus threatened to arrest him under charges of treason if he failed to cooperate. However, Magnus was disappointed when Prowl defended Rodimus' decisions and wondered why Prowl had summoned him to Earth in the first place if he was going to break the law himself. Sticking to the rigid letter of the law got Magnus nowhere, as Rodimus correctly pointed out that he couldn't arrest them all. Furious, Ultra Magnus returned to Bumblebee's cave. {{storylink|Seasons in Flight}}

Sometime after Bumblebee had been rebuilt into a new, more powerful body, Ultra Magnus rdered several of the Autobots to form a team to arrest Rodimus' group. He seriously got the Autobots offside by demanding [[Blurr (G1)|Blurr]]'s participation despite his recent trauma at the hands of Skywatch and overrode Bumblebee's command authority. Returning to the launch site, Magnus officially declared his intent to arrest Rodimus under order 00101001 of the Tyrest Accord, which majorly honked off Rodimus as he felt there was no factions any longer, the war was over and that "his" group only wanted to get off Earth. However, Magnus' distrust of the Decepticons was proven correct when Swindle interrupted the argument to unveil his new creation: the [[Stunticon (G1)|Stunticon]] [[combiner]] [[Menasor (G1)|Menasor]], who was ordered to kill Magnus first. {{storylink|Enemies of the System}} During the battle, Ultra Magnus exhausted his arsenal of firepower and was about to be killed by the titanic Decepticon when Optimus Prime arrived on the scene courtesy of Skywatch. The Autobots rallied and defeated the Decepticons, forcing Swindle and the Constructicons to retreat. Shortly after being repaired, Magnus was furious to learn that Swindle had escaped his grasp once again, and took out his frustrations on Rodimus, charging him with treason for all of his actions. When Bumblebee stepped in to diffuse the situation, Magnus attempted to cite his greater authority of his legal jurisdiction, but was put in his place when the younger Autobot pointed out that on Earth, he was in charge, and that no Autobot would be arrested, regardless of their mistakes. However, as this was going on, Rodimus took off in Ultra Magnus' shuttle. {{storylink|Earthworks}}

Evidently after regaining his sense of perspective, Ultra Magnus rescued the surviving Wreckers from Garrus-9. In his debriefing to Prowl, Magnus discussed the reasons for even sanctioning the mission given what it cost the Wreckers, and despite his disgust at the horrific crimes perpetrated by some of the Autobots who faced the infallible Aequitas, he argued the need for revealing the contents of the supercomputer's data to the Autobot rank-and-file. After handing over a [[data slug]] containing the Aequitas data, Magnus stated that he hoped Prowl was true to his word and would hand it over to Bumblebee, because he knew Prowl would have hoped the data in the slug was corrupted so he could maintain the cover up. As he left, he said that perhaps he should have checked the data for corruption after all, but considered it would be a disservice to the both of them for not trusting Prowl and going behind his back. {{Storylink|Last Stand of the Wreckers issue 5|Last Stand of the Wreckers #5}}

With his ship stolen, Ultra Magnus was stranded on Earth alongside the other Autobots, and was none too happy about it. He had little patience for [[Brawn (G1)|Brawn]] raging about an attempted assassination of Bumblebee, and threatened to have the angry little guy restrained if he didn't shut up. He was interrupted by the news that the plane carrying Optimus Prime's team back from [[North Korea]] had been blown out of the sky, but before he and [[Kyle Pennington|Pennington]] could get any real information about the attack, an explosion rocked the Autobot-Skywatch base. The Decepticons had returned to Earth to rescue their captured comrades, and Ultra Magnus found himself incapacitated by [[Frenzy (G1)|Frenzy]]'s mind-scramblingly loud battle cry. {{storylink|Revenge of the Decepticons Part 1: The Demolished Man}}

The attacking Decepticons quickly left with the freed captives, leaving Ultra Magnus to wonder why they neglected to finish him and the other Autobots off. There were more important things to worry about, though: the base was in ruins, Bumblebee and Pennington were both in critical condition, and Optimus Prime and his team were still missing in action. Ultra Magnus took command and had the base evacuated, moving the personnel to [[Omega Supreme (G1)|Omega Supreme]]'s location, but not before leaving Brawn with a mission to find a [[Thundercracker (G1)|special somebody]]. {{storylink|Revenge of the Decepticons Part 2: Altered Carbon}} As the Autobot convoy moved towards Omega, they found themselves under attack from humans who didn't want them on their planet. Ultra Magnus was initially prepared to defend himself, but Pennington convinced him that killing humans would only make things worse for them, and the convoy continued. Unfortunately, things got worse for them ''anyway'' when Megatron himself showed up and easily dispatched Ultra Magnus and his troops. Assuming that he was out to destroy the Autobots as usual, Magnus tried to distract Megatron from killing the Skywatch soldiers, but the Decepticon made it clear that the humans were just as important targets for his revenge. {{storylink|Revenge of the Decepticons Part 3: Woken Furies}}

Injured, Ultra Magnus was held hostage by Megatron and [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]], who used him as leverage to get Optimus Prime to meet with them. This meeting ended with Megatron retreating with a [[stasis lock]]ed Soundwave, and Ultra Magnus was brought to safety. {{storylink|Revenge of the Decepticons Part 4: Burning Chrome}} As he awaited repairs, Magnus told Prime that he had managed to place a tracking chip on Soundwave, allowing the Autobots to find Megatron's hideout. {{storylink|Revenge of the Decepticons Part 5: Enemy Mine}}

Six weeks later, Ultra Magnus watched as Rodimus returned to Earth with the [[Matrix of Leadership]] and several lost Autobots in tow. He brought news that Galvatron had built an army and taken control of Cybertron, prompting Optimus Prime to lead his Autobots back to their home planet. On Bumblebee's orders, Ultra Magnus remained on Earth with him, Prowl and a few others. {{storylink|Space Opera—Final Tableaux: Orphans of the Helix}} He still participated in talks of what would be done with Megatron, whom had surrendered himself and been taken into space with Prime's Autobots. When [[Xaaron]] explained that they needed a neutral third party to judge the Decepticon leader for his crimes, Magnus suggested [[Tyrest (Autobot)|Chief Justice Tyrest]], and opined that they should aim for a death sentence. {{storylink|Chaos Theory Part 1}}

Ultra Magnus was involved with the investigation on [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Spike Witwicky]]'s supposed murder of [[Scrapper (G1)|Scrapper]]. He chewed out Prowl and [[Streetwise (G1)|Streetwise]] after the latter had broken protocol and transformed into robot mode during a mission to spy on Witwicky. Prowl brought up his suspicions of anti-Transformer pundit [[Ben Simpson]] and of a deeper Decepticon conspiracy, but Magnus ordered him to stick to the case at hand. {{storylink|Police Action: Part 1}} The Autobots then brought in [[Sandra (G1)|Sandra]], a former Skywatch agent who abandoned Spike's unit once it started breaking too many rules. Ultra Magnus commended her for sticking to military protocol before questioning her on Spike's past. {{storylink|Police Action Part 2: Only Forward}}

Learning the whereabouts of Ben Simpson from Sandra, Bumblebee and Ultra Magnus agreed that they couldn't rely on the slow human legal system when he was causing so much damage to human-Autobot relations. After ordering [[Jazz (G1)|Jazz]] to remain at base, Magnus rolled out with Skywatch, who confronted Simpson and revealed him to be [[facsimile construct]] controlled by none other than Swindle. The Decepticon tried to escape again, but Ultra Magnus dismembered him and dragged him back to base, where he admitted under interrogation that he had been supplying Spike Witwicky and Skywatch with Cybertronian technology from the start. This revelation caused the Autobots to sever their ties with Skywatch. {{storylink|Police Action Part 3: A Second Chance at Eden}}

The Autobots on Earth returned to Cybertron once Optimus Prime's team had defeated Galvatron, [[D-Void]] and the Decepticons. Much to Prowl's surprise and chagrin, Ultra Magnus then decided to accompany Rodimus and [[Drift (G1)|Drift]] on their quest to find the [[Knights of Cybertron]], feeling that the Autobots were no longer wanted on post-war Cybertron. {{storylink|Transformers: The Death of Optimus Prime|The Death of Optimus Prime}} He joined the crew of the ''[[Lost Light]]'' as Rodimus's second-in-command, but an accident at launch caused the ship to [[quantum jump]] to a random point in space. {{Storylink|Liars, A to D Part 1: How to Say Goodbye and Mean It|How to Say Goodbye and Mean It}} A ruptured hull led to a portion of the crew being sucked out into space, so Rodimus and Ultra Magnus set the ''Lost Light'' down on a nearby planet and went out searching for them. {{Storylink|Liars, A to D Part 2: Hangers On|Hangers On}}

{{spoiler|Liars, A to D Part 3: The Chaos of Warm Things|April 14}}
Once they launched again, another problem reared its ugly head in the form of a [[Sparkeater]] being loose on board, causing Ultra Magnus to remember the time he arrested the Decepticon [[Blip]]. The Autobots hunted the monster for some time until Rodimus killed it by using crew member [[Rung]] as bait, which Magnus heavily disapproved of. Rodimus brushed him his "lecture", stating that ''he'' was the one in charge now, not Ultra Magnus. {{storylink|Liars, A to D Part 3: The Chaos of Warm Things|The Chaos of Warm Things}}

The Ultra Magnuses of various [[universal stream]]s had different roles to play in the mind-bending cross-dimensional war between the hyper-evolved future Autobots known as the [[Alternity]] and the [[Megatron Aggregate]].

When the universal stream of [[Transformers: Mystery of Convoy|Primax 1286.3 Kappa]] was chosen by [[Megatron (G1)#Alternity|Diamond Black Megatron]] to play host to a "[[#Mystery of Convoy|game full of death and suffering]]" of his own devising, Megatron's opponent, [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity#Alternity|Ultimate Silver Optimus Prime]], was allowed to pick one inhabitant of this universe to be his champion, and to battle the horde of Decepticons Megatron would empower. Loathe as he was to use him like a chess piece, Prime selected Ultra Magnus and imbued him with a portion of his power. Even with this added strength, though, Prime knew that Magnus's resilience and determination were truly his greatest weapons. {{storylink|To Die Game!}}

The Magnus of another, unknown universal stream also found himself pulled into the Alternity's war when the Megatron of his world joined the Aggregate and began razing his Cybertron with his increased power, forcing the Autobots to step up their efforts to protect the planet's citizens. While patrolling Sector 51, Administrative Official Magnus entered City #14, which had recently been freed from Decepticon occupation. Walking amidst the disheveled and displaced citizens, Magnus burned a huge Autobot brand into the ground, marking the city as Autobot territory.

Suddenly, a dazzling being of light appeared to him, referring to him by the military rank of "Ultra"; a rank he did not yet possess. Then, another Ultra Magnus who had joined the Alternity, sporting an [[auto-avatar]] looking very much like Optimus Prime, stepped through a glowing portal, asking Magnus to join him. Magnus then shook hands with Prime, joining the Alternity collective and sharing the consciousness of every Magnus across the multiverse. Magnus then vowed to use his newfound power to bring peace to Cybertron... as ''Ultra'' Magnus! {{storylink|Nissan GT-R / Ultra Magnus (Brilliant Pearl White)}}
Nine million years ago, following the destruction of the Autobots [[Dion]] and [[Magnum]], only one of the two were able to be saved from death. The lucky survivor was rebuilt and renamed "Ultra Magnus" by [[Alpha Trion (G1)|Alpha Trion]], and the unlucky one perished. The '''IDW ''Generation 1'' continuity''' is the storyline of [[IDW Publishing]]'s ''[[Generation 1 (franchise)|Generation 1]]'' reboot comic-book series, begun in [[2005]]. It is separate from all other ''Generation 1'' fiction, re-imagining the [[Autobot]]-[[Decepticon]] [[Great War (G1)|Great War]] as a galaxy-spanning conflict, with [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] abandoned as a dead husk and teams from both sides covertly operating on various alien worlds to defend or destroy the native populations—including [[Earth]].

==Overview==
==="-ations"===
[[Image:Escalation 1 a.jpg|right|200px|thumb|Remember that time when this didn't happen?]]
The IDW universe brings [[Transformer]]s into the modern day; the traditional "crashed on Earth 4 million years ago" approach is not used. Alternate forms are largely updated to modern-day vehicles, with robot modes reworked accordingly.

The series is notable as a much more "cloak-and-dagger" world than many previous iterations of ''Generation 1''. Earth is initially portrayed as simply one of many battlegrounds in a galaxy-spanning war of subversion and conquest. Also of note is that there is a reason Cybertron is not the site of conflict: the planet is a deserted wasteland, a result of the devastation it suffered in the war. The Decepticons follow a [[Infiltration protocol|strict protocol]] of infiltration as they attempt to take over alien worlds. [[Alternate mode]]s serve a very real and important purpose of disguise, as discovery by natives is strictly forbidden by both factions. Open conflict is rare, and battles are often fought entirely in vehicle forms.

The story opens on Earth, as the Decepticons there have discovered a wildly powerful source of energy, and break protocol to secure it. This soon brings both [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] and [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] to the planet, escalating the conflict. The [[human]]s are deeply involved as well, both innocent bystanders and active covert organizations such as the [[Machination]] and [[Skywatch]]. Various plot threads, many of them outlined in the ''Spotlight'' series of one-shots, continually thread into the main story, and echoes of the Transformers' dark and distant past begin to gather strength as well.

The series is much darker then the original Marvel comics and G1 cartoon, featuring Autobots who make morally ambiguous decisions, Decepticons that regularly kill humans and Autobots, and many themes of horrific modification, racism, and civilian casualties.

====Cast====
The series initially was not constrained by the needs of portraying a current toyline, allowing great freedom in cast selection.

The story opened with an assortment of the more familiar 1984 [[Autobot]]s operating on Earth, with some of their standard 1984/85 [[Decepticon]] foes also present. But the free format allowed fan favorites such as [[Nightbeat (G1)|Nightbeat]] and the [[Battlecharger]]s to be thrown into the mix, and even almost random additions as [[Hardhead (G1)|Hardhead]] and [[Dogfight]] have played roles as the setting expanded and more Transformers headed to Earth. Many of the latter-day ''Generation 1'' cast have been shown fighting the war on worlds other than Earth, and even a few ''[[Generation 2 (franchise)|Generation 2]]'' Autobots have made appearances.

==== New alternate modes ====
Initially, most of the Transformers seen in this continuity featured [[alternate mode]]s updated to the modern day. Here are some examples:
* [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]]: Dodge Sprinter ambulance
* [[Runamuck (G1)|Runamuck]] and [[Runabout (G1)|Runabout]]: Chevrolet Camaro SS
* [[Thundercracker (G1)|Thundercracker]], [[Skywarp (G1)|Skywarp]] and [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]]: F-22 "Raptor"
* [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]]: Nissan 350Z police car
* [[Sunstreaker (G1)|Sunstreaker]]: Lamborghini Diablo
* [[Jazz (G1)|Jazz]]: Current-model Porsche 911 (aka 997)
* [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]]: had a new modern diesel engine train mode.
* [[Ratbat (G1)|Ratbat]]: Sony personal media player
* [[Hardhead (G1)|Hardhead]] started in his familiar Cybertronian self-propelled artillery mode before being reformatted into a wheeled Earth armored vehicle (possibly a [[wikipedia:Pandur 8X8 APC|Pandur 8X8 APC]]).

{{note|In possibly an art error, one of the covers for [[Infiltration issue 0|''Infiltration'' #0]] features Jazz with his original Porsche 935 hood/chest, though it's possible that at the time IDW and artist [[E. J. Su]] hadn't finalized the designs yet.}}

=====Exceptions=====
There were also numerous robots that retained the looks of one or both of their "classic" G1 modes. A few examples:
* [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]] (although he possesses a new transformation scheme, making for a different looking robot mode to his most familiar appearances)
* [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]]
* [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]], though he started in his Cybertronian form, similar to his look in [[Dreamwave Productions|Dreamwave]]'s ''[[Transformers: The War Within|The War Within]]''. Note, however, that even in his "classic" mode Prime is given a sun visor on his cab roof/chest and an overall more streamlined and modern truck mode.
* [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]], [[Laserbeak (G1)|Laserbeak]] and [[Ravage (G1)|Ravage]] have their familiar modes, due to their travel to Earth in 1984.
* [[Sixshot]]

====Technology====
Several aspects of Transformer technology have been refurbished for the series.

Most prominently, the "facsimile circuitry" dummy drivers shown in the ''Generation 1'' [[Marvel Comics continuity]] have been replaced by sophisticated solid-light projections composed of "[[holomatter]]". Holomatter generators are built into each member of the Autobot contingent on Earth; they can function as an avatar for their respective Autobot, even quite some distance away, allowing the Autobots to covertly interact with a planet's natives.

The Decepticons, in a similar vein, make use of [[facsimile construct]]s — synthetic humans grown in special pods from the bodies and minds of kidnapped "template" humans. These replicas are used to destabilize the societies of planets the Decepticons wish to conquer.

Both sides also possess a variant of teleportation technology, seen for example when Megatron travels to Starscream's [[Oregon]] command bunker. This "[[orbital jump]]" can apparently be coordinated from an ''[[Ark (disambiguation)|Ark]]'' spacecraft or the Decepticons' bunker headquarters. Nightbeat describes it as "not the most pleasant way to travel".

[[Size changing]] is a rarity, generally abandoned in these energy-short times. Megatron, originally possessing a tank mode, is encouraged by the energy-rich [[Ultra-Energon|Ore-13]] and takes on a size-changing alternate form when he arrives on Earth. His transformation sequence and its attendant mass-displacement process consumes a great deal of energy, and is thus surprising to the Autobots who observe it. Why Soundwave and his cassettes utilized it remains unknown, though perhaps it was a necessity to further his role as a spy.

Conversely, certain technologies did not yet exist at the series' starting point. Gestalt ([[combiner]]) technology had only appeared as a long-ago experiment, which yielded only the barbaric [[Monstructor (G1)|Monstructor]]. [[Pretender]] technology had likewise appeared only as a failed experiment, and [[Headmaster (technology)|Headmaster]] and similar binary-bonding tech makes its debut after years of covert and illegal development. All of these technologies appear to bestow greatly-enhanced power on the users, to the point that [[Thunderwing (G1)|Thunderwing]] devastated the entire planet of Cybertron with his Pretender shell, and Monstructor easily defeated [[Omega Supreme (G1)|Omega Supreme]].

====Soft reboot====
The "-ations" arcs were written by [[Simon Furman]], and included: ''[[The Transformers: Infiltration|Infiltration]]'', ''[[The Transformers: Stormbringer |Stormbringer]]'', ''[[The Transformers: Escalation|Escalation]]'', ''[[The Transformers: Devastation|Devastation]]'', ''[[Revelation (IDW)|Revelation]]'', and ''[[The Transformers: Maximum Dinobots|Maximum Dinobots]]'' Furman intended ''Revelation'' to be longer and to be followed by another miniseries called ''Expansion'', but due to pressure by IDW, the 2 series were compacted into ''Revelation'', with ''Maximum Dinobots'' following up to tie up some loose plot threads. At this point, IDW decided to change things up and give new readers a jumping on point...

===''All Hail Megatron''===
''All Hail Megatron'' takes place about a year after ''Maximum Dinobots'' and introduces a situation where the Autobots are not on Earth and the Decepticons are free to rain destruction on the planet. Written by newcomer [[Shane McCarthy]], the series initially seemed to ignore much of the previous continuity, with the cast stripped down to the major players from 1984–1986. The result was a series that was "controversial" with the established fandom, to say the least.

====Alt mode retrofits====
Many alt modes were also retrofitted to be more in line with the old 80s cartoon, or to promote the then-selling line of ''[[Universe (2008 franchise)|Universe]]'' toys. For example:
* The Seekers take the form of the older F-15 "Eagle", reflecting their ''Masterpiece'' toys for no apparent in-story reason.
* Prowl and Hound were upgraded to their ''Universe'' toys.
* [[Sunstreaker (G1)|Sunstreaker]] and Sideswipe: upgraded to a Lamborghini Gallardo to match their ''Universe'' toys.
* [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]]: downgraded to a steam locomotive for no logical reason.
* [[Ratbat (G1)|Ratbat]]: reverted to his classic cassette mode for dubious reasons.
* [[Hot Rod (G1)|Hot Rod]] was badly damaged by the end of ''Maximum Dinobots'' and seems to have taken his classic G1 form upon recovery.

====''Another'' soft reboot====
After nearly half its run "All Hail Megatron" fairly abruptly started referring back to continuity points from Furman's run, but the continuity between the series remained a definite rough spot and IDW eventually announced they would be extending the series with a series of half-issue stories designed to help bridge the gaps. Once the series finished for good, IDW wanted yet another new jumping-on point for fans...

===Ongoing series===
The new ''The Transformers'' ongoing series features a new writer, [[Mike Costa]], and takes place 2 years after ''All Hail Megatron''. Artist [[Don Figueroa]] returned and debuted a new take on Transformer designs that seems to reformat the entire cast yet again, giving them a very different, mechanically complex design-style more along the lines of the [[Transformers (film)|live-action movie series]] while still maintaining basic Generation 1 character likenesses. However, IDW has stated{{fact}} that they allow their artists great freedom in drawing the characters as they see fit and thus Don's designs are a stark contrast to the style used by Chee in the Bumblebee miniseries (more G1 but with some nods to the previously established designs) and Roche's designs in ''[[The Transformers: Last Stand of the Wreckers]]'' (which continue the styles from the -ations and ''All Hail Megatron'') even though all three series are concurrent. In fact, these drastic changes have led to some embarrassing inconsistencies such as [[Blurr (G1)|Blurr]] having an Earth car mode in the third issue of the ongoing and his Cybertronian mode in the second issue of Bumblebee, which takes place directly afterward.

According to Prowl the Transformer population is numbered 10,000, {{storylink|Ride-Along}} and they have spread to twelve planets. {{storylink|Ironing Out the Details}}
However, it was discovered that Prowl's estimates were off, and there was a much greater amount than previously thought. {{storylink|Transformers: The Death of Optimus Prime}}

==Media==
The continuity includes the following mini-series, listed in approximate ''chronological'' order:
* ''[[The Transformers (IDW)|The Transformers]]'' ongoing series — takes place 2 years after ''All Hail Megatron'', with the Autobots in hiding from the military out to destroy them.
* ''[[The Transformers: Bumblebee]]'' — A four-issue miniseries focused on Bumblebee as the newly elected Autobot leader, which takes place between issues 3 and 5 of the ongoing series.
==Timeline==
''See main article: [[IDW timeline]].''

==Production==
Initially, the IDWverse was penned almost entirely by veteran Transformers scribe [[Simon Furman]], with the primary exceptions being:

* ''Megatron Origin'' ([[Eric Holmes]])
* ''[[Spotlight: Kup]]'' ([[Nick Roche]])
* ''[[Spotlight: Mirage]]'' ([[George Strayton]])
* the ''New Avengers'' crossover and ''[[Spotlight: Ramjet]]'' ([[Stuart Moore]])

Pencils on the main -ation series were done by [[E. J. Su]] (with [[Nick Roche]] and [[Robby Musso]] filling in while Su was on paternity leave) and a variety of artists have penciled the other series in the continuity.

However...

IDW decided to shake things up in an attempt to gain new fans. Furman's planned 6-issue ''Revelation'' was shortened to four ''Spotlight'' issues and its follow-up, ''Expansion'' was canceled in favor of a new series, ''[[The Transformers: All Hail Megatron]]'' — written by new writer, [[Shane McCarthy]] and illustrated mainly by [[Guido Guidi]]. ''All Hail Megatron'' was expanded from 12 to 16 issues to mainly fix continuity issues between McCarthy's and Furman's work, and was written and illustrated by various individuals (see issues for credits).

Following ''All Hail Megatron'', three new interconnected series debuted with new creative teams. An [[The Transformers (IDW)|ongoing monthly series]] started in November 2009, written by [[Mike Costa]] and illustrated by [[Don Figueroa]]. A month later, a [[The Transformers: Bumblebee|Bumblebee miniseries]] (written by [[Zander Cannon]] with art by [[Chee Yang Ong]]) began and yet another miniseries, ''[[The Transformers: Last Stand of the Wreckers]]'', written by [[Nick Roche]] and [[James Roberts]] and also illustrated by Roche, debuted in January, 2010. After Don's 6-issue arc, artists E.J. Su and [[Javier Saltares]] each illustrated an issue before Guido Guidi jumped back on board for the remainder of the arc.

Costa penned another miniseries, ''[[The Transformers: Ironhide]]'' which started in May, 2010, and was illustrated by [[Casey Coller]] and [[Joana Lafuente]].

In September 2010, McCarthy returned for [[The Transformers: Drift|a miniseries]] about his [[Drift (G1)|Drift]] character. Art was provided by [[Alex Milne]] and [[Josh Perez]].

==Notes==
* The IDW continuity is equivalent to the [http://marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Earth-616 Earth-616] from [[Marvel Comics]] in [[New Avengers / Transformers|some way]].
* As of, roughly, issue #6 of the 2009 ongoing series, there have been more issues of the IDW continuity published than there were in the original [[The Transformers (Marvel comic)|Marvel Comics US continuity]]. (However, due to modern trends in [[wikipedia:Decompression (comics)|comics decompression]], there's been less ''plot.'')
* When IDW first picked up the ''Transformers'' license, Simon Furman pitched a story that would have tied in to his idea for a ''[[Cybertron (franchise)|Cybertron]]'' ongoing comic, and would possibly have been in continuity with the [[Dreamwave Productions|Dreamwave]] comics. The G1 story would have begun with the destruction of Cybertron and the discovery that the destruction of [[Unicron]] in the [[universal stream|Aurex cluster]] had destabilized the entire [[omniverse]]. To save all of existence, the Autobots travel across the galaxy attempting to reassemble an artifact called the 'Decepticon Matrix', which would have resurrected Unicron - a plot which parallels that of ''Cybertron'', in which the Autobots seek out the [[Cyber Planet Key]]s to revive [[Primus]]. [[Vector Prime]] would have appeared in both series, travelling between universes to guide both groups of Autobots in their quest. It seems that series would then have come together with the concurrent ''Cybertron'' comic as Transformers from across the [[multiverse]] were brought together for a final, epic clash.<ref>Pitch printed in ''[[The Transformers: The Best of Simon Furman]]''</ref>
:''Smokescreen is an [[Autobot]] from the [[Generation 1 (franchise)|Generation 1]] [[Continuity family|continuity family]].''

[[Image:Smokescreeng1.jpg|right|350px|thumb|Liar. Cheater. Compulsive gambler. Meet Heroic Autobot Smokescreen, kids!]]
Every Autobot has a purpose, be it as a leader, a warrior, a healer, or a scout. '''Smokescreen'''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s purpose, however, is to charm and deceive. His job is to conceal the Autobots' true mission and lead the enemy astray, and he's not above flat-out cheating to get the job done. Off the battlefield, he uses his naturally friendly and sociable nature to get in close with his Autobot comrades... then reports back to [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]], giving the Autobot leader an on-the-ground perspective on what his troops are thinking.

Smokescreen's armaments are similar to his tactics. If he can't outthink, charm, or just plain outrun you, he'll surround you with a magnetized cloud of smoke, and blast you with his circuit-scrambling weapons while you're stumbling around blindly. Smokescreen affectionately refers to his teammate [[Powerglide (G1)|Powerglide]] as "P.G." <ref>The Ballantine [[Find Your Fate Junior]] book [[Desert Flight]]</ref>
[[Image:DinobotIsland1-newguys.jpg|left|thumb|300px|How'd we never notice those extra Autobots over there in the corner?]]

Smokescreen joined the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]]'s Autobots during their second year after reactivation on Earth. Where he was beforehand remains a mystery. He was first seen watching from the sidelines during the latest disaster caused by the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobots]]' "training". {{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 1}} Smokescreen was chosen by [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Optimus Prime]] to join a strike force headed for [[Dinobot Island (G1)|Dinobot Island]], after some mysterious temporal disturbances were traced there. They were nearly overrun by the Decepticon invaders on the island, until [[Grimlock (G1)|Grimlock]] marshalled a cavalry of rampaging dinosaurs. {{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 2}}

On their day off, Smokescreen played a game of 2-on-2 with Prime, [[Inferno (G1)|Inferno]] and [[Tracks (G1)|Tracks]], shooting hoops and shooting the breeze. It, of course, didn't last—soon Optimus Prime summoned a strike force to deal with a Disaster: Code Blue. It should've been a Code Green: green for [[Constructicon (G1)|Constructicons]]! Grapple had been conned into building a Solar Power Tower for the Decepticons, and now [[Devastator (G1)|Devastator]] was protecting it from Autobot interference. Smokescreen stepped up in his role as a diversionary specialist, creeping up on the tower so that Devastator couldn't see him. Once he was close enough, Smokescreen taunted the giant Decepticon into throwing a size 60 kick in his direction, but darted aside at the last moment, letting the tower take the blow instead. An off-balance Devastator was then knocked into the already-damaged tower by the Autobots, bringing it all tumbling down. {{storylink|The Master Builders}}

Smokescreen was part of the Autobot team overseeing the [[Negavator]] project. When the Decepticons staged an ambush on the Negavator convoy in a canyon, Smokescreen was easily the most effective defender out of all the Autobots. As [[Megatron (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Megatron]] swooped to purloin the unguarded Negavator during the battle, Smokescreen unleashed his magnetic cloud of smoke, completely obscuring the weapon. Megatron ended up flying face-first into the Negavator (Smokescreen - 1, Megatron - 0). The [[Seeker (body-type)|Seekers]] also got caught in his cloud, and the magnetic vapor stuck to them even as they flew free. A few well-placed disruptor beams later, and Smokescreen rendered the jets totally helpless, unable to see or use their radars or instruments for guidance. Smokescreen singlehandedly held off the Decepticon attack until the other Autobots could regroup and drive them off completely. {{storylink|Auto Berserk}}

After Megatron acquired power from the [[Heart of Cybertron]], the Autobots were being slaughtered by his constant barrage of energy beams. At Optimus Prime's request, only Smokescreen could save the day. Once again, Smokescreen managed to blind Megatron with his smoke clouds, leaving the Decepticon leader unable to aim his death rays. Smokescreen was still clipped by a stray shot, but he had valiantly bought the other Autobots enough time to regroup, and their combined laser power collapsed the hillside on top of Megatron, giving them a chance to retreat. For those keeping score, let's call that one a draw. {{storylink|Microbots}}

As the Decepticons attacked a newly-minted solar power plant, Smokescreen and the Autobots arrived to thwart their efforts. Some sustained firepower kept [[Starscream (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Starscream]] at bay, and Smokescreen's disruptor beams blew out [[Thrust (G1)|Thrust]]'s guidance systems. As the hopelessly outmatched Decepticons fled, the human onlookers flocked to the Autobots, showering them with praise and adoration. Of course, 72 hours later, the Autobots were being led into a rocket ship at gunpoint, forced into exile away from planet Earth. Fickle little creatures. {{storylink|Megatron's Master Plan, Part 1}} Smokescreen and the Autobots eventually returned to Earth and cleared their good name, driving off the Decepticons and ending their stranglehold on [[Central City (Earth)|Central City]]. {{storylink|Megatron's Master Plan, Part 2}}

When the Decepticons kidnapped [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]] and [[Seaspray (G1)|Seaspray]], Smokescreen volunteered for the rescue mission. Acting in his duty as the Autobots' devious and covert morale officer, Smokescreen showed considerable concern for the laconic [[Beachcomber (G1)|Beachcomber]]. While [[Warpath (G1)|Warpath]] shrugged him off as being "a thinker, not a fighter", Smokescreen was a bit suspicious about how Beachcomber was isolating himself from his fellow Autobots. Still, more immediate concerns took precedence: the [[electrum]]-enhanced Decepticon armada. When it became clear that the Decepticons were impervious to their assault, [[Mirage (G1)|Mirage]] went back to base for reinforcements, and Smokescreen stayed behind to cover his retreat. He unleashed his signature cloud of smoke to discourage the Decepticons, but unfortunately Megatron had learned something from previous fights with Smokescreen, and just ordered his troops to shoot up the cloud until they got 'em. Painfully for Smokescreen, it was a rousing success (Smokescreen - 1, Megatron - 1). He barely managed to stumble weakly back to base and recruit [[Omega Supreme (G1)|Omega Supreme]] for combat. {{storylink|The Golden Lagoon}}

Smokescreen was part of a group of Autobots who confronted the [[Insecticon (G1)|Insecticon]]s and their [[Insecticon clone|clones]] during their raid on Earth's food supplies. [[Shrapnel (G1)|Shrapnel]] had produced the largest army of Insecticlones yet, however, and the Autobots were quickly driven away by their sheer numbers. {{storylink|Quest for Survival}} When San Francisco was attacked by an [[Asteroid bird alien|alien creature]], Smokescreen lent his own unique ability to the Autobot defensive effort. Smokescreen didn't seem to mind. {{storylink|Child's Play (episode)|Child's Play}} After fleeing the planet in a modified toy rocket ship, the group of Autobots were captured by a freelance entrepreneur named [[Bosch]]. Bosch planned to sell them into slavery and make a tidy profit in the bargain. He sealed the Autobots inside special chambers to disable their weapons, their transforming cogs, and their free will. Unfortunately for Bosch, he was low on energon and the last tube failed to operate properly, giving Smokescreen a chance to break free. The Autobot was paralyzed by a ray beam before he could disable Bosch, and so he changed tactics. Smokescreen showed Bosch how to win (well, ''cheat'') at a game of chance, thanks to his built-in override wire. Seeing the profit in Smokescreen's l33t cheating skills, Bosch arranged for them to go to the gambling world of [[Monacus]]. Once they won enough energon chips to pay off Bosch's debts, he would free Smokescreen's fellow Autobots. Problem was, Bosch was virtually spent already, and so the will-sapped Autobots needed to be used as collateral to get enough money up front to play.

On Monacus, no one seemed interested in Bosch and Smokescreen's collateral, until they were forced to deal with the sinister [[Gyconi|Lord Gyconi]], of Gyconi's Pit of Destruction in [[Sheol]]. Gyconi offered them a meager price, at 500% interest to be paid within the hour. Horrible as the deal was, they were forced to take it. At the gambling palace, Smokescreen quickly proved to be just the sort of sucker casinos love to have around. He continued playing long after they had won enough money, and lost it all on one bet when a small Jawa looking creature noticed his "cheatin' wire" and pulled it loose. Well done, Smokescreen.

While drowning their sorrows in the local speakeasy, Smokescreen and Bosch met another Autobot named [[Devcon (G1)|Devcon]]. Having left Cybertron long ago, Devcon became a bounty hunter, pursuing Decepticons throughout known space. His recent travels had brought him into the path of [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]] and some Decepticons from Earth, whom he had traced to Sheol. Parting from Devcon, Smokescreen and Bosch returned to Gyconi's empty-handed. Forced to watch as Gyconi put the Autobots into pit-fighting competition with a horde of [[Animalien]]s, Smokescreen resolved to do something to help his friends. Backing up to the edge of the arena floor in car mode, Smokescreen unleashed his cloud into the pit, ending the fights for the moment. As he and Bosch tried to get away, they were intercepted by Gyconi's Decepticon allies, [[Dirge (G1)|Dirge]] and [[Ramjet (G1)|Ramjet]]. Luckily, Devcon returned in time to lend them a hand, blowing the 'Cons out of the sky. With the bounty hunter as backup, Smokescreen and Bosch decided to force Gyconi to give back the Autobots (essentially, making them welshers as well as cheats). After the Autobots were safely recovered and reactivated, Smokescreen showed he had learned a valuable lesson about gambling by suggesting the Autobots take in some R & R...at the casino. {{storylink|The Gambler}}

Smokescreen was one of the first Autobots scrambled by the energy creature known as [[Kremzeek]]. He was sent running in circles, jumping between modes and emitting copious amounts of smoke every time he landed in car mode. {{storylink|Kremzeek!}} When [[Blitzwing (G1)|Blitzwing]] and the Constructicons captured several Autobots in their "zone defense", Smokescreen joined [[Hoist (G1)|Hoist]] and [[Powerglide (G1)|Powerglide]] on a mission to get their friends out of the sinister maze. With Powerglide calling out the right route from his aerial vantage point, the two groundbound Autobots easily made their way to the center of the maze. Smokescreen's smoke blinded [[Scrapper (G1)|Scrapper]] long enough for Hoist to lasso their damaged friends and begin pulling them to safety. When Blitzwing tried to intervene, the smoke ended up sending him flying into Scrapper while the Autobots got away. {{storylink|Triple Takeover}} Smokescreen was assigned to a guardian convoy when the Autobots were given samples of a new Earth super-fuel to test out. Naturally, Megatron and the Decepticons tried to steal it, but the Autobots largely managed to outmaneuver the Decepticons from the road. When Megatron flew in close and threatened to blow them all to kingdom come by igniting the super-fuel, Smokescreen launched into his signature move. Hey, if it works, it works—Megatron was blinded yet again by the Autobot's magnetic smoke, and flew when he started taking heavy fire from the Autobot convoy (Smokescreen - 2, Megatron - 1). {{storylink|The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 1}} Later on, Smokescreen was among the Autobots who battled the [[Stunticon (G1)|Stunticons]] in an attempt to retrieve the key to [[Vector Sigma]]. {{storylink|The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 2}}
Smokescreen was amongst the Autobot participants in the [[Europa 2000]], a charity race from Paris to Istanbul. While the Autobots were ostensibly there to try and win extra money for charity, they were secretly assigned to protect the arrogant American driver [[Auggie Cahnay (G1)|Auggie Cahnay]]. Smokescreen was making good progress in the race until he was rammed off the road by [[Wildrider (G1)|Wildrider]] and [[Drag Strip (G1)|Drag Strip]], then broadsided by the other Stunticons. As Kenji buckled up inside Smokescreen's vehicle mode, the talkative Autobot immediately began yammering on about himself, telling Kenji about his function, vehicle mode and loads of other tedious crap. When the Autobot forces on Earth were severely depleted by several battles, [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] instructed [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] to construct five additional warriors using a device called the Mind Bank. It seems that before the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]] left [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], Smokescreen and four other Autobots allowed their minds to be encoded on crystalline containment vessels, in case reinforcements were needed on the starship's mission. Left in storage for the last few million years after the crash, the crystals were miraculously still intact, and the Ark had constructed new Earthen bodies for the Autobots. ''Later, Smokescreen was assigned by Optimus Prime to surreptitiously guard [[Buster Witwicky (G1)|Buster Witwicky]] from harm, after the young human personally humiliated the Decepticon commander Shockwave in battle using a mech suit. He and the others suffered a severe pounding at the hands of the future Decepticons and the Autobot [[Jazz (G1)|Jazz]], who had been temporarily turned into a zombie-drone by Galvatron after being taken prisoner. ''Despite Smokescreen's valiance, Optimus Prime wasn't thrilled by how fragile the Autobots were during his absence, so he faked his death to force the Autobots to learn how to carry on without him. Inferno was injured and Wreck-Gar stayed behind to cover their retreat, leaving only Smokescreen to pilot the shuttle back to Cybertron. As the Autobots returned to America, they learned that a human had almost killed Bumblebee using Cybertronian-based weaponry. Smokescreen was pissed off, accusing Skywatch of letting their technology fall into the hands of civilians, but Optimus Prime ordered him to stand down. Then without warning, the plane carrying the team was suddenly shot down above the Pacific Ocean. {{storylink|Revenge of the Decepticons Part 1: The Demolished Man}} Upon surfacing, the Autobots learned that [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] was responsible, having returned to Earth after an earlier defeat. After the Chaos War on Cybertron, Rodimus assembled a team of Autobots to search for the fabled [[Knights of Cybertron]], in the hopes off restoring balance to their world. :Smokescreen transforms into a Datsun 280ZX Turbo based upon the Electramotive Davendorf/Sharpe touring car. Contrary to popular belief, the 38 decal is not a reversed "83" (often said to be an attempt to avoid legal issues). In truth, the [http://www.a2zracer.com/page84.html real life car has raced under both numbers.] Though Smokescreen is a Datsun 280ZX, he is a [[retool]] of the standard body used by both [[Bluestreak (G1)|Bluestreak]] and [[Prowl (G1)/toys|Prowl]], featuring a much larger front fender and a rear spoiler, although the Mexican IGA variant has a fender and design more akin to Bluestreak and Prowl. He is predominantly blue, red and white in both vehicle and robot modes. Like Bluestreak and Prowl, he features two spring-loaded missile launchers mounted either side of his head, and is armed with a silver "Electro-Disruptor Rifle".

: On [[December 20]] of 2002, Smokescreen was re-released as part of the ''[[The Transformers Collection|Transformers Collection]]'' series in Japan. This version has slightly-altered decals, and fully-functional spring-loaded missile launchers.

: In 2003, Smokescreen was released as part of the Toys "R" Us [[exclusive]] "[[Commemorative Series]]" line in the US. This version of Smokescreen uses a softer, unchromed black plastic for his rifle and missiles owing to [[For safety reasons|breakage issues]], plus his launchers are completely non-firing. He uses the same stickers as the Japanese "bookbox" release.
:''Alternators'' Smokescreen transforms into a 2003 Subaru Impreza WRC rally car, with opening hood, trunk, and all four doors as well as a detailed interior. He also features working steering and rubber tires. His robot mode is based upon his original toy, as well as his cartoon model, but with changes made to reflect modern standards of Transformers toys, as well as his new vehicle mode. He is armed with a laser rifle formed from his turbo intercooler, and has the capacity to mount two spring-loaded rocket launchers on either side of his shoulders, though these were only included with his 2004 ''[[Binaltech]]'' retool, Smokescreen GT.

:There are several major differences between the [[TakaraTomy|Takara]] ''Binaltech'' Smokescreen and Hasbro's ''Alternators'' version. While the ''Binaltech'' version of Smokescreen is constructed partially out of die-cast metal and painted in a metallic electric blue paint job, Hasbro's ''Alternators'' release has plain blue plastic. Additionally, Takara released two [[variant]]s, namely the number 07 Solberg / Mills and the number 08 Makinen / Lindstrom versions of the 2003 WRC car. Hasbro, meanwhile, only released the number 08 version. There have been complaints within the collector community, however, of ''Binaltech'' Smokescreen's paint being very easy to scratch, chip and scrape. (Reportedly, early batchs of the production run were particularly prone to outright ''flaking'', while later batches had somewhat more stable paint jobs)

{{note|Smokescreen was actually a retool of ''Alternators/Binaltech'' [[Bluestreak (G1)|Silverstreak]], a stock Subaru WRX. However, possibly due to the "#8" version ending up as a [[shelfwarmer]], those plans never came to fruition.
* In late 2005, Subaru displayed a life-size robot-mode prop of ''Binaltech'' Smokescreen GT using body shell parts of the then-current Impreza WRC for a corporate event. Interestingly, this prop had the same parts fitting problems in vehicle mode that the increasingly worn-out ''Binaltech'' Smokescreen and Streak toolings would exhibit in the then-current ''Binaltech Asterisk'' [[Red Alert (G1)|Alert]] release.
'''With more and more NAILs arriving on Cybertron every day, his authority being questioned at every turn, and his tenuous control of the Decepticons slipping away, Bumblebee is forced to make a drastic choice.'''

==Synopsis==
As a ship carrying the newest group of [[NAIL]]s to return to [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] comes in for a landing over the primordial planet, the substance of the world itself comes to life, reacting primitively to the presence of the "intruders" and lashing out at their craft. Although damaged, they are able to set down, and are greeted by [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]] and [[Metalhawk]], though the conversation that follows is a terse one, as Metalhawk takes every opportunity to blame the Autobots for the current situation and foster distrust for them in the new arrivals.

Elsewhere, [[Tappet]] is caught in the act of graffiting a building by [[Needlenose]] and [[Horri-Bull]], who are acting as enforcers of the peace following the implantation of [[inhibitor/deterrence chip]]s in the [[Decepticon]]s that prevent them transforming or using their special powers. Unfortunately, the pair elect to enforce the peace upside Tappet's head, but are caught before the situation escalates by [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]], [[Blurr (G1)|Blurr]] and [[Sideswipe (G1)|Sideswipe]]. While Blurr takes Tappet into custody, Prowl and Sideswipe return Horri-Bull and Needlenose to the Decepticons' "home", where self-appointed leader [[Ratbat (G1)|Ratbat]] makes demands for equal treatment that fall on deaf ears. After the Autobots depart, however, Ratbat turns on the two troublemaking Decepticons for their willingness to serve the Autobots' government, and announces that he has a plan...

While [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]] and [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] are attempting to map the full extent of the changes to Cybertron, Bumblebee and Prowl clash over the Decepticon problem, and over Prowl's opposition to holding a memorial for the believed-dead crew of the ''[[Lost Light]]'', since most of the planet's population are hostile or indifferent towards the idea. Leaving Bumblebee to deal with matters of state, Prowl receives a visit from [[Arcee (G1)|a mysterious co-conspirator]], who is aiding him in carrying out the unpleasant tasks necessary to keep the peace.

Metalhawk arrives and arranges for Tappet's release, following which he and Bumblebee talk about the memorial. Rather than actually give an answer, Metalhawk volunteers the fact that rumours are starting to spread that Bumblebee had the ''Lost Light'' blown up, which drives the little yellow 'bot into a fury. Before he can really lay into Metalhawk, though, they are distracted by a scuffle nearby: Horri-Bull and Needlenose are at it again, beating up [[Zetca (G1)|Zetca]]. Bumblebee threatens to detonate Horri-Bull's I/D chip if he doesn't back off, but Horri-Bull calls his bluff, preparing to kill Zetca... and Bumblebee doesn't blink, triggering the explosive and blowing Horri-Bull's head off. And watching nearby is [[Skywarp (G1)|Skywarp]], who reports Horri-Bull's death, and despite supposedly having an I/D chip, ''teleports'' away...

"Prime never '''had''' to deal with this. And he never '''wanted''' to. But this is '''my''' world and I have to '''defend''' it—even if it doesn't want us here. :—'''Bumblebee'''

==Notes==
*One of the NAILs in the opening double spread is an homage to [[Boba Fett]].
[[Image:Rid skywarp teaser.jpg|right|thumb]]
*The title is likely a reference to "The Anatomy Lesson", a well-known Alan Moore-written issue of ''Swamp Thing''.
*As with ''[[The Transformers: More than Meets the Eye|More than Meets the Eye]]'' [[Liars, A to D Part 1: How to Say Goodbye and Mean It|#1]], the release of this issue was preceded by a "scavenger hunt" of sorts that began on [[January 23]]rd, with one each of a series of fourteen images spotlighting individual characters being released to twelve different websites, both Transformers fansites and popular comic book new sites. These included [http://tformers.com/transformers-exclusive-tformers-transformers-robots-in/17046/news.html Bombshell at TFormers], [http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=36600 Bumblebee at Comic Book Resources], [https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=260848257318709 Ironhide on the official Transformers Facebook page], [http://www.allspark.com/content/view/9864/ Metalhawk at the Allspark], [http://forum.idwpublishing.com/viewtopic.php?p=271775#271775 Needlenose at the IDW forums], [http://p.twimg.com/AkB-GCgCMAIFdUD.jpg Prowl on John Barber's Twitter], [http://www.fullmetalhero.com/content/idw-transformers-robots-disguise-1-treasure-hunt-exclusive-image-2726/ Ratbat at Full Metal Hero], [http://www.comicvine.com/news/exclusive-transformers-robots-in-disguise-promo/144153/ Shockwave at Comic Vine], [http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/comics-16/rid-1-hits-this-wednesday---skywarp-wants-vengeance-174199/ Skywarp at TFW2005], [http://www.seibertron.com/transformers/news/exclusive-transformers-robots-in-disguise-promo-image-soundwave-remains-silent/23772 Soundwave at Seibertron], [http://www.newsarama.com/comics/transformers-rid-teaser-idw-120124.html Starscream at Newsarama], [http://www.polarismagazine.co.uk/exclusive-idw-transformers-robots-in-disguise-scavenger-hunt/ Tappet at Polaris Magazine], [http://glovestudios.blogspot.com/2012/01/transformers-robots-in-disguise-promo.html Wheeljack at Andrew Griffith's blog] and [https://twitter.com/#!/dyemooch/status/162819553892646912 Zetca on Josh Perez's Twitter].
*The Autobots are all sporting new Cybertronian alternate modes in this issue, either lifted directly from ''[[Transformers: War for Cybertron (franchise)|War for Cybertron]]'' or drawn in emulation of the game's style. It is explained that these modes were provided by Wheeljack, marking one of the few times in the IDW universe that a change in alternate mode is given an in-story rationale, rather than being the result of "artistic license".
**Thus, Sideswipe seems to have abandoned his wicked-sweet ''Generation 2''-colored body after only one issue. This was because the artists of both issues were drawing them at the same time and weren't aware the other was drawing Sideswipe differently.<ref>[http://www.allspark.com/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=84653&view=findpost&p=1997976 Post by Andrew Griffith on The Allspark]</ref>
* Horri-Bull's yellow color stems from [[:Image:Horribull bullhorn toy.jpg|the image TFWiki used to have for Horri-Bull's toy]] and [http://www.tfu.info/1988/Decepticon/Horri-Bull/horri-bull.htm TFU.info's screencap of Horri-Bull]. [[Josh Perez]] chose to use the yellow to "help him stick out a lot more".<ref>[http://www.allspark.com/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=84653&view=findpost&p=1997013 Post by Josh Perez on The Allspark]</ref>
*In the Decepticon crowd scene, Blast Off is standing beside Starscream. However, as this wasn't clear, Josh Perez mistakenly thought it was a generic and colored him like [[Wikipedia:Mister Sinister|Mister Sinister]].<ref>[http://www.allspark.com/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=84653&view=findpost&p=1997975 Post by Andrew Griffith on The Allspark]</ref>
*Also in the Decepticon crowd scene, Mindwipe and Triggerhappy are seen standing next to each other—a reference to their joint desertion of [[Scorponok (G1)|Scorponok]]'s forces in the [[Marvel Comics continuity|Marvel comics]].
