the Beast Wars Maximal

:Airazor is a Maximal from the Beast Era portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

Primarily used for recon and surveillance due to her aerial alternate mode, Airazor's talents are a great asset to the Maximal cause. She's calm and confident, but also adventurous and brave, with a healthy supply of dry humor. Her aerial skill in either mode, incredibly sharp eyesight and steady aim make her a dangerous opponent.

Due to the circumstances of her "birth," she sees Rhinox as something of a father-figure and Cheetor as the sibling she never had. She devotes most of her efforts, however, to taming the wild yet gentle Tigatron. She shares his love for the beautiful planet on which the Maximals are stranded, and it is on this planet where their destiny will be forever intertwined.

The Predacons who stole the Golden Disk were pursued by Unit 2, who was granted clerance from Maximal Defense Command to commandeer transport. The Maximal who would become Airazor was boarding her ship, the Chromia 10, when Unit 2 approached and demanded use of it. "Airazor" at first refused, but suggested she was open to ... persuasion. The call of adventure captured her interest, and instead of handing over the Chromia 10 to Unit 2, she allowed him to hitch a ride, piloting it herself.

The Chromia 10 intercepted the Predacons' ship, the Darksyde, which was engaged in battle with the Axalon and guarded by a mysterious third ship. During the ensuing firefight, the Chromia 10 was badly damaged. Optimus Primal had their Sparks remotely uploaded to blank protoforms in the Axalon's cargohold, which saved their lives, but severely damaged their core mainframes. Dawn of Future's Past

(This story is a retcon, as Airazor was originally treated as a newborn protoform in the Beast Wars animated series. Instead, here she is revealed to have been a Maximal who existed previously on Cybertron but ended up on the Axalon in a stasis pod, damaged to the point of not remembering any of her past.)
:Voice Actor: Pauline Newstone (US), Tetsuya Iwanaga (Japan)

Her stasis pod damaged upon crashing to Earth, Airazor was able to come online due to the genius of Rhinox and the bravery of Cheetor. Rhinox deftly operated the stasis pod's controls and Cheetor offered up his own components to repair it. Immediately out of the pod, she outmaneuvered and destroyed Terrorsaur; her aerial beast mode, at the time, made her the only Maximal other than Optimus who could fly. The Spark

She and Tigatron started to team up more frequently, a prospect Airazor seemed to welcome, but Tigatron preferred to work alone. Their first big adventure together came when a flying island paradise was discovered. The island, however, was covered in boobytraps which were triggered by the use of energy weapons. Airazor rescued Tigatron when he was ambushed by Predacons on the island, but she was damaged badly. Tigatron carried her on his back, refusing to leave her behind. The island was ultimately destroyed, much to the sadness and outrage of Tigatron, and he would have secluded himself from the other Maximals further if not for Airazor's concern. The Trigger, Part 2

Soon after, the Predacons beat Tigatron to another stasis pod, reprogramming it and unleashing Inferno. Once again, Airazor tried to work with Tigatron, but, once again, he insisted that he works alone. Airazor commented that sometimes you can be too alone. She was right, because then Tigatron got shot up a lot. Nearing death, Tigatron was saved by the arrival of Airazor and Optimus Primal. Spider's Game

After the realization that the aliens who seeded their planet with traps and energon were returning to destroy it, the Maximals and Predacons entered a truce. Optimus Primal used Airrazor to try to sneak Rattrap into the Predacon base to find out what Megatron was up to, but Megatron, of course, found them on his scanners and politely asked them to leave. Unbeknownst to Megatron, the ploy was a decoy for Tigatron's infiltration. The aliens arrived and a new alien structure was built, trapping Airrazor, who was tortured. Optimus Primal forced his way inside, with the help of the Predacons, and traded himself to the aliens for Airazor. After Primal was scanned and briefed by the aliens, they transformed the planet's artificial second moon into a Planet Buster, which fired upon the planet, slwoly igniting the unstable energon.

After the destruction of the Vok's Planet Buster, Airazor and Tigatron left together to find the rest of the missing stasis pods scattered across the planet. While on their search, the two Maximals discovered not only a remarkably beautiful valley, but a strange plant. As the two looked into each other's eyes and held hands in quiet celebration, the plant transformed into another Vok device, and as they clasped hands, declaring their love to exist beyond the throes of death, the two were absorbed and shot into space. Cheetor arrived, but was too late, loudly protesting the loss of two of his best friends. Other Visits, Part 1

Airazor and Tigatron were kept in a form of stasis until near the end of the Beast Wars, when they were merged together in the powerful being Tigerhawk. Tigerhawk returned to Earth as the emissary of the Vok to stop the deteriation that the Beast Wars was causing to the timestream, his first act being to destroy the Darksyde, sending the Predacons scrambling. Tarantulas managed to capture Tigerhawk and removed the Vok's influence from his frame (and absorbed it into himself), letting Airazor and Tigatron's sparks inhabit Tigerhawk's body. Tigatron's voice was dominant, but Tigerhawk's personality and mannerisms were shared. Other Victories

Shortly afterward, however, Tigerhawk was killed in a standoff with the Nemesis after Megatron retrieved it from the ocean floor.

(Note: In the Japanese dub of Beast Wars, Airazor was turned into a boy as a means to (hopefully) increase toy-sales. For the TV series, his relationship with Tigatron was played off somewhat differently to avoid complaints of homosexuality. Tigatron was presented as a samurai retainer with protective feelings towards his young ward; their closeness addressed in a "brotherly" sort of way. Despite that, there was still enough innuendo left-over for the gender-bending to become unsettling. The Japanese script's near-relentless "jokey" tone didn't help.)

Tales of the Beast Wars comics
Somewhere near the end of the first year of the Beast Wars, before the Planet Buster ignited the planet's energon, Airazor, Rhinox, and Cheetor overheard a battle between Fractyl and Packrat. Airazor ended up having to rescue Cheetor, who had darted off ahead of them and gotten blasted. After the battle was resolved, she and the other Maximals fled, pretending to be beaten by the timid Fractyl to increase his standing in Megatron's eyes. Critical Mass

Primeval Dawn comics
Though the Beast Wars were over, the threat to the timestream was not. Tarantulas, presumed destroyed, existed in a new, undead form that was fueled by his new Vok powers. The remaining Vok assembled warriors to end this threat, creating Primal Prime and giving new Transmetal bodies to the extant Sparks of Airrazor and Tigatron.

After awakening a stranded stasis pod containing Ramulus, opening a second pod triggered an ambush by Spittor, Iguanus, Razorclaw, and a reborn Transmetal 2 Ravage. Airazor immediately saved Tigatron's life, knocking Spittor aside before Tigatron would have unwittingly come in contact with Spittor's body, covered entirely in cyber-venom. This maneuver left her vulnerable to Ravage's gunfire, knocking her out of the air.

The battle ended catastrophically, and Ramulus, Airazor, and Tigatron were forced to carry a critically-wounded Primal Prime back to the Ark after Tarantulas ripped the Matrix of Leadership from his chest. As Airazor and Tigatron conferred with the seemingly absent Vok, Airazor experienced great pains due to her battle wounds. But before she could explain, the Ark was under attack by Ravage and the Predacons. Primeval Dawn

(Due to 3H Productions loss of the convention license, "Primeval Dawn "was never completed. It is telling, however, that Airazor was not present in the subsequently-placed "Wreckers" storyline. It is unclear for certain what happened to her in the interim, though it is likely she died.)
Beast Wars Metals manga
(Note: while the Beast Wars Metals manga picks up halfway through the Beast Wars series, it is not in-continuity with the television series.)

In the Beast Wars Metals manga, Airazor was changed into a Transmetal rather than being captured by the Vok aliens. In this manga, Airazor is a girl, presumably because her transmetal toy has boobies.

Toward the end of the manga, Airazor's spark became seperated from her body, with her body becoming host to a malevolent force. The evil Airazor did battle with Tigatron, who did not want to fight the robot he loved. With no other option, Tigatron gave the evil Airazor one of his katana and knelt down. As the evil Airazor struck him with the sword, the real Airazor's spark entered Tigatron's body. In cyber space, the two embraced and vowed never to be apart again. As their sparks merged, they became Tigerhawk.
: Part of the first wave of year-two Beast Wars product, Airazor transforms into a somewhat generic falcon (or some other bird of prey). ==Trivia==
* Airazor's gender in the Hasbro line is due to Beast Wars story editors Bob Forward and Larry DiTillio's insistance. The original Airazor toy wasn't developed with a specific gender in mind, and Bob & Larry wanted a larger female presence in the show, and the Airazor toy seemed as good a choice as any. They requested the change early enough that the toy's packaging bio could have its pronouns changed to female.

* Note the name of Airazor's ship in Dawn of Future's Past, the Chromia 10. "C-10" is a reference to her original toy's Japanese ID number, and not to being "case fresh"... as is obvious from her dialogue.
Tigatron was once known as Unit 2, part of the Maximal Command Security Force which protected the fragile peace that existed on Cybertron in the centuries following the Pax Cybertronia. One of the Security Force's elite troops, Unit 2 was often put in charge of guarding important Maximal artifacts, a job that often required his amazing prowess at tracking. Tigatron was born in the far frozen north, at first heavily damaged in his memory circuts and unable to remember friend from foe. When Megatron threatened the white tigers, and Optimus Primal conceded the fight, Tigatron knew his alliance.

He and Cheetor held a strong sibling friendship. While Cheetor was youthful and eager, Tigatron was confident and wise. Cheetor called him "Big Cat" frequently.

Before Airazor, Tigatron had an organic tiger friend named Snowstalker, who may or may not have been the basis for his altmode. Some fans have speculated that the pair were more than friends, as the dumb stubbies say. Sadly, Snowstalker became one of the war's casualties, putting Tigatron in a funk for a short while, until he realized that doing nothing only meant more innocents would die.

After his revival, Tigatron became a background player, sending updates to the Axalon through communication towers. Optimus Primal became worried about Megatron's plans when he initiated a truce, so he ordered a covert ops. Rattrap and Airazor made enough of a distraction to allow Tigatron inside the Darksyde.

Inside, he tampered with the ship's computer systems and found out what got Megatron so worried - The Vok were coming back, and they weren't happy.

Tigatron and Airazor formed a very powerful relationship during this time. They both felt a strong connection to the prehistoric Earth, and they frequently spent their time outside of the Maximal base in their beast forms instead. Unfortunately, they were abducted by the alien plant, long before Cheetor could ever arrive. The two were not seen again until much later, when the awesomely powerful Vok emissary Tigerhawk arrived.

Universe: The Wreckers
Primeval Dawn
Tigatron and Airazor's sparks were sent back to Earth by the Vok sometime after Tigerhawk's destruction. Tigatron's spark took possesion of Ravage's former body at the bottom of a lake. Joining Transmetal Airazor and a newly-created Primal Prime, Tigatron battled Tarantulas and Ravage, who had also managed to escape death.

(Note: The Primeval Dawn story was never finished, so how Tigatron came to join the Wreckers (see below) is unknown.)

The Wreckers
Tigatron, Primal Prime, and others arrived on Cybertron during Megatron's anti-biological reign. Various teams met with the Oracle, which assigned them various tasks. When Optimus Primal objected, saying that with all these soldiers, Megatron could be defeated easily, the Oracle swept him away and cleansed his memory of the recent events. Tigatron vehemently objected to this treatment of his former commander. A set of coordinates was infused into Primal Prime's head by the Oracle. When arriving at an Autobot shuttle, which was to ferry the Wreckers to those coordinates, Tigatron felt that something was amiss. It was then that the Vehicon generals Spy Streak, Scavenger, Quake and Blastcharge attacked. Tigatron used his Nature's Fury attack, utterly destroying Quake. During the ride in the Autobot shuttle, Tigatron meditated, recovering from the battle. Upon arrived at their destination, he once again sensed that danger awaited the Wreckers...
(Note: although it picks up after the first season, the Beast Wars Metals manga is not in-continuity with the television series.)

In the Beast Wars Metals manga, Tigatron was interpretted as a samurai warrior and given a character re-design to reflect that angle. At one point, he is forced to do battle with the spark-less body of his beloved Airazor. Not wishing to harm her, he willingly let the evil Airazor take the opportunity to decapitate him.

Just as evil Airazor began to strike, the spark of the real Airazor entered his body. In cyberspace, the two embrace eacher other and vow never to be apart again. Their sparks then merge, resulting in the all-powerful Tigerhawk.
Trivia
* The origianl version of Tigatron shown at Toy Fair in 1996 gave him orange fur instead of cream-colored. This version was never produced.

*In the Japanese dub of Beast Wars, for the sake of humor, Tigatron was played as a "samurai" ronin. Additionally, since Airazor was made male in the Japanese dub, instead of their relationship being romantic, Airazor was presented as Tigatron's ward whom he looked to as a "brother" (hence the close bond).
Tigerhawk is easily one of the most powerful Transformers shown in the Beast Wars era. In robot mode, Tigerhawk can fly, has missile launchers under each arm, his wings double as sheilds, and he has wrist-mounted electricity cannons. His beast mode contains razor sharp claws and teeth, as well as a pair of chainguns on his forearms. These outstanding powers are nothing compared to his uncanny shamanic abilities to control the weather and terrain of Earth almost completely at whim.
Controlled by two Vok, Tigerhawk approached Earth as a meteor, which promptly destroyed the Darksyde, engaged and defeated the entire Predacon force, and nearly buried both Megatron and Optimus Primal, before succumbing to a virus courtesy of Tarantulas.

Later, after awakening in Tarantulas' lair, the spider attempted to destroy Tigerhawk's mind by forcefully demolishing the Vok presence inhabiting it. Due to a fluke coincidence, Tarantulas only succeeded in destroying himself, alongside the Vok who had enslaved Tigerhawks mind.
Concerned with Megatron's constant futzing with the timestream, the Vok merged the bodies of the Maximals Tigatron and Airazor together to form the staggeringly powerful Tigerhawk while leaving out the Sparks.

The Sparks of Airazor and Tigatron, which followed Tigerhawk to Earth, merged to become one and entered Tigerhawk. Afterward, Tigerhawk allied himself with the Maximals. Other Victories

Tigerhawk's memories are somewhat vaguely described - he has little recollection of being Tigatron or Airazor, yet he shares both of their connection with the prehistoric Earth. He vaguely recalls things from the Beast Wars, but the appearance of Cheetor as a Transmetal 2 and Optimus Primal as his Optimal Optimus form came as a surprise to him. Nemesis, Part 1

:The Vok are aliens in the Beast Wars portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

The Vok were mysterious energy-based alien creatures, enlightened descendents of The Swarm, who developed prehistoric Earth towards their own designs to atone for their shameful past. The Vok were dedicated to "the Project", which consisted of enigmatic, sometimes contradictory plans for the planet. As a result of these experiments, there were a number of anomalies on the Earth, including several floating landmasses, a mysterious stone formation, and a hollowed-out moon.

Fiction
Animated continuity
Beast Wars
:Voice actors: Blu Mankuma and ? (US), Hidetoshi Nakamura (Japan)

Their experiments were irreperably wrecked as a result of the Beast Wars. The Vok decided to cut their losses by revealing the nature of the second moon: An immense cannon designed to destroy the planet! Optimus Primal sacrificed himself in order to destroy the Planet Buster.

As a result of the Planet Buster's explosion, a Quantum surge was released. The surge caused a mutation in several of the Transformers (notably, Megatron, Rattrap, Cheetor and Tarantulas) turning them into Transmetals. The destruction of the Planet Buster also released a Transwarp wave that traveled through space and time, and eventually got back to Cybertron

Later in the series, the Vok made several other attempts to wipe out the Transformers, notably a second weapon which appeared on the planet (sometimes referred to as the Metal Hunter), and the abduction of the Maximals Airazor and Tigatron.

Near the end of the Beast Wars, the Vok sent an emissary, Tigerhawk (a newly created fusion of Airazor and Tigatron), to Earth to deal with Megatron's disruption of the timestream. Tigerhawk was able to destroy the Predacon base, but was eventually subdued and captured by Tarantulas. Tarantulas was able to draw the Vok out of Tigerhawk's frame and into his own, but this lead to his own destruction...

Primeval Dawn comic
...and subsequent Vok-powered rebirth.

With the power of the Vok at Tarantulas' fingertips, the alien race turned to the Ark, creating Primal Prime and restoring the sparks of Airazor and Tigatron to separate bodies, hoping they could defeat Tarantulas.

The ending of this story was long promised but not yet delivered when 3H lost the liscense.

Origin controversy
In the course of writing the Beast Wars television show, the co-story editors had conflicting ideas on who the Vok were. Bob Forward liked to imagine the Vok as super-evolved humans who had outgrown the need for bodies. Larry DiTillio wanted to link the Vok to The Swarm, who, in his version of the events of the Generation Two comic book, had completely wiped out humanity and wished to atone for their crimes. Neither origin made it into the television show before it completed.

Ultimately, the Vok origin was published as backstory for OTFCC's Primeval Dawn storyline.
