Detailed synopsis
In a wild valley, a group of primitive hominids forage for food. A gargantuan snake attacks two of their number, and the protohumans are helpless to stop it...

At the Axalon, a haunted Dinobot meditates on his sword... and holds its blade ominously over his chest. But after a long moment of tension and hesitation, he casts it aside.

On the bridge, Rhinox announces that he's been calculating the path of the Transwarp Wave from the Planet Buster's destruction -- it's travelling through time at an accelerated rate, and will reach Cybertron in the "present". Optimus fears Megatron has made similar calculations, and the group realizes they need to increase their defenses.

Dinobot, still somber, runs into Rattrap, who rips him a new one over his turning the Disk over to Megatron. Dinobot is left to reflect that his actions cannot be undone... but may yet be "mitigated". He arms himself and heads off into the wastes.

Megatron and Rampage are out for a stroll, when Cheetor observes them. They drive him off with some damage, but Cheetor calls in the sighting to Dinobot, who promises to follow up.

At his lair, Tarantulas has captured a tasty antelope for his dinner. But as he creeps up to the struggling beast, Dinobot bursts out of the ground, holding him at gunpoint and demanding to know what information is on the Golden Disk. Tarantulas doesn't know -- there are no more copies remaining, and Megatron is keeping the Disk on his person at all times. Dinobot uses Tarantulas as his unwilling ride.

Megatron and Rampage have arrived at a particular mountain near the protohuman valley. Megatron is expecting visitors from Cybertron soon... but not if he can alter reality. He pulls out the disk and explains that it contains images recorded in the future, including one of the same mountain. Megatron has Rampage destroy the mountain, and the image on the disk changes to suit the altered reality. Dinobot observes all this with dawning dread: Megatron has the power to change the future.

The Predacon leader intends to change the outcome of the Great War in the Decepticons' favor... by destroying the protohumans and depriving the Autobots of an important ally race. The rest of the Predacons arrive, and begin a full assalt on the valley. While Dinobot's back is turned, Tarantulas blasts him; Dinobot reciprocates by squashing him under a rock. Dinobot contacts Optimus, who orders him to maintain position, but Dinobot knows there is no time to wait. He moves in to attack the entire Predacon force single-handed.

Dinobot is able to take out the Predacons, but he loses his weapons in the process, suffers considerable damage, and drains most of his energy supply, rendering his optic lasers unusable. Soon, it's just Megatron and Dinobot, who reveals a human captive. On his last bit of Energon, Dinobot plunges a rock into a stick, creating a makeshift hammer. He knocks the disk out Megatron's hand and then destroys it with his optic lasers, expending his last bit of energy. Megatron flees as the Maximals arrive, but it is too late for Dinobot. As he lays dying, Dinobot solidifies his friendship with Rattrap, and asks Optimus to tell the whole truth about him, the good and the bad, and allow him to be judged accordingly. With that, Dinobot's spark leaves his exostructure, and he dies.

The Maximals hold a funeral for Dinobot, dissolving his remains. At the valley, a curious protohuman finds Dinobot's hammer. He soon figures out how to use it to help gather food... and to fend off predators like the giant snake. Dinobot's actions have not only saved the protohumans, but also helped them take a step toward evolving into humanity.
Quotes
:-Rhinox- "Remember that transwarp explosion?"
Primal gives him a serious look
:-Rhinox- "Okay, stupid question..."
The rhino has a once-in-a-lifetime lapse in intelligence

"Destroy this valley and everything in it! The human race shall never have existed!"
:—Megatron, announcing the impending genocide of the proto-humans.

"The question that once haunted my being has been answered. The future is not fixed, and my choices are my own. And yet, how ironic...for I now find that I have no choice at all! I am a warrior...let the battle be joined."
:—Dinobot, realizing his destiny.

"One lonely turncoat, battling on against impossible odds." (Wiping fake tear) "I'm almost touched.... Fortunately, such moments pass quickly. Quickstrike, scrap him!"
:—Megatron, observing Dinobots fight to save the valley single-handedly.

"What's a warrior without weapons, eh?"<br>
"A warrior still!"
:—Quickstrike goading Dinobot into a fight.

"Hmm, my ears are burning! Yesss! Why, Dinobot, what a delightful surprise! Let's see, where are we now? I have the Golden Disk, I have the power to change the future, and the only obstacle in my path to unimaginable glory...is yourself. Exhausted. Damaged beyond recovery. Defeated."<br>
"Not just yet!"<br>
"Ah-ah-ah!" (Megatron reveals a proto-human bound in energon bindings.) "One more step, and it's raining bits of early anthropoid, yesss." (He sees Dinobot hesitate.) "Oh dear, how positively Maximal of you. You were weakened before you started, Dinobot. Weakened by compassion."
:—Megatron confronting the severely damaged Dinobot.

"Oh-ho-ho-ho, really, Dinobot, a stick—against a Transmetal? I think not."<br>
"Final Warning: Power failing. Jeopardy extreme. Repeat: Extreme."<br>
"Please. Face it, Dinobot. You're old technology. Obsolete. What could you possibly do?"<br>
"Improvise."
:—Megatron arrogantly mocking Dinobot while the Maximal's computer warns him of his injuries.

"Well fought, my friend. You saved the valley. You saved the lives of those who live here...and of those who are still to come."
:—Optimus Primal

"Like I said, you're just a blasted, slag-spouting saurian, but...it's nice to know where you stand."<br>
"Upwind of you, for preference, vermin."
:—Rattrap and Dinobot sharing one last banter.

"Tell my tale to those who ask. Tell it truly, the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly. The rest...is silence..."<br>
:—Dinobots last words.

"He lived a warrior...and died a hero. Let his spark join the Matrix, the greatest of Cybertron."
:—Optimus Primal's eulogy to Dinobot.
Miscellaneous trivia
* Beast Wars co-story editor Bob Forward drew storyboards for this episode. Not only is it the only Beast Wars episode to be directed by the series' writers, but it's also the only episode to be done up in storyboards, traditionally, rather than being directed on-the-fly. Bob Forward worked in person with the Mainframe animators for this episode.
* The original storyboards were auctioned for charity at a BotCon.
* According to Bob Forward, Megatron's transformation sequence had to be reconstructed to be able to show his transformation from underneath for one shot. Previously, the animation only "worked" when seen from eye-level or above.
* This episode marks the very last appearance of Rhinox in beast mode.
*During the recording of this episode, Scott McNeil was attempting to deliver Dinobot's last words, but was continually interrupted by the recording crew's laughter. He is reputed to have said while still in character, "Do you mind?!! I'm trying to die here!!!"

Megatron captures and reprograms Rhinox into a Predacon.

Summary
In some usual rocky terrain, the Maximals are disappointed to learn that their day's expedition has been a waste of time, as the Energon they were searching for is inaccessible. Rattrap whines, saying the situation couldn't get worse, prompting an attack from the Predacons. The Maximals are at a clear disadvantage, but Rhinox triggers a rockslide that crushes all the Predacons.

Optimus commends Rhinox's intelligent tactics, and the Maximals begin their return to base. Megatron also determines that Rhinox is a major threat to his operation and orders Tarantulas to capture the large Maximal. When Rhinox is a distance behind the other Maximals on the road him, the spider captures Rhinox and knocks the rhino out with some Venom.

A while later, the Maximals noticed their large comrade has disappeared. Rattrap activates his communicator, and are able to listen through Rhinox's communicator, overhearing the events in the Predacon base where Megatron uses "The Transmuter" to turn Rhinox into an evil Predacon. While the Maximals are concerned, Primal plans to wait a while before the Maximals make an effort to rescue their friend, yessssssss...

In the Predacon base, Megatron, and his new underling, Evil Rhinox, get down to plotting on how they can use Rhinox's knowledge to destroy the Maximals - but some technical problems with Megatron's computer halt the planning session. Rhinox is sent to check up on Scorponok's repair of the system (which was secretly vandalised by Rhinox). With no witnesses, Rhinox drops several tons of hardware onto Scorponok. When Scorponok's flattened body is found later by Megatron and Waspinator, they have no clue who committed the crime.

Waspinator deposits Scorponok into a CR Chamber for repair, but flying away, Waspinator is hit with a heavy piece of weight pushed by Rhinox. The impact drives Waspinator into a state of dementia. This time, Rhinox's attempt at homicide is witnessed by Terrorsaur, who meets with Rhinox in private. There, Rhinox declines Terrorsaur's offer of partnership and insists that Terrorsaur stay silent. Later, Megatron discovers that the spiders have been poisoned. Still oblivious, a furious Megatron demands shouts out his confusion.

Outside of the Pred base, Cheetor figures out Primal's plan: leave Rhinox as he is, so he'll run roughshod over the Predacons. But knowing that Megatron will eventually wise up, the Maximals get ready to mount a rescue. At the same time, Scorponok has been repaired, and he tells Megatron what happened to him. Megatron concludes that his little experiment has gone wrong, and decides to end itm-and Rhinox as well.

Megatron confronts Rhinox, and assigns Scorponok and Terrorsaur to disarm the new recruit. By mentioning Terrorsaur's plotting, Rhinox is able to get the two Predacon goons to fight each other instead of himself, leaving them as easy pickings. With those two taken care of, he opens fire on Megatron, causing the Predacon to fall off his hover platform.

Rhinox taunts Megatron with a speech about who's the boss now, but Rhinox has stepped into the range of the Transmuter. Megatron reactivates the machine, converting Rhinox back to his regular good self. The Maximals blast their way into the base. Primal battles with Megatron, slicing off one of the Predacon leader's arms. A stray shot from the still demented Waspinator hits the Transmuter, and the Maximals grab Rhinox evacuate while the Predacons take cover to avoid being harmed by the exploding machine.

Afterwards, the Maximals relax. Rhinox admits that the Predacons have some serious personality problems, and the Maximals have a big laugh. Except for Dinobot.
*Error

Transformers References
*When Waspinator is driven temporarily insane, he babbles that his name is Shrapnel, an Insecticon from the Generation 1 continuity family. Stuck like this for the rest of the episode, he proceeds to stutter and repeat words in a semi-accurate reference to the distinctive speech pattern that Shrapnel had in the G1 cartoon, which saw him repeat the last word of his sentences. Waspinator also delivers the classic TF slogan "More than meets the eye."
*The concept of Rhinox being reprogrammed by Megatron only to attempt to overthrow him later is revisited in the sequel series, Beast Machines. It is worth noting that Tankor's behaviour in that series is very similar to his (Rhinox's) behaviour as a Predacon during this episode.
*Both Optimus and Rhinox say "Yeeessssss..." in a very similar manner to Megatron. Imitation IS the sincerest form of flattery...
