Cybertron episode #45

As both sides approach the ancient Lemuria starship, Optimus Prime suffers a breakdown.

Detailed synopsis
At the cement-locked starship Atlantis, Starscream rants and raves, and finally busts his way out through a wall, swearing that he'll beat everyone, Autobot and Decepticon alike.

Meanwhile, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down, the Autobots open the final gate to the central layer of Gigantion, the original, organic planet that the inhabitants built layers of planet around. Metroplex says the legendary "flying city" of Lemuria is supposed to be here. Optimus notes it sounds like one of the ancient starships, and Wing Saber and Override race off to go look for it, much to Metroplex's amusement and Optimus' mild dismay.

Elsewhere, Coby is doing another round of repair-work on Landmine, and notes he's finally at 100%. Evac and Quickmix arrive and do a little teasing.

Back at the central layer, Wing Saber and Override find the Lemuria, surrounded by a huge lake. As Optimus and the others race to catch up, a large chunk of the fake sky collapses, and Galvatron and Menasor make their entrance. Menasor and Metroplex face off, and Galvatron whips out his gatling cannon. One Sonic Wing Mode stock footage later, Optimus and Galvatron duke it out, and Galvatron refuses to shut up the entire time. He taunts Optimus about having bested the Cybertron Defense Team, and muses that maybe Optimus has finally figured out that soldiers are best regarded as disposable, to be sacrificed as needed. Optimus and Wing Saber are separated, and Saber tries to tackle Galvatron alone. Naturally, it doesn't work. The two take off to link up again, and Galvatron declares he'll just turn the force of his attacks on Wing Saber... making Optimus refuse to link up for fear of Saber's safety. Prime takes on Galvatron alone, and it doesn't go well.

Coby (piloting his Cobybot), Landmine, Evac and Quickmix reach the central layer themselves, and rendezvous with Override. A brief discussion on Optimus' fight results in Evac and Override returning to the battle, leaving the others to explore the Lemuira.

Menasor and Metroplex argue, with the rebel noting how Metroplex treated him "like a kid". He knocks Metroplex over and moves in to drill him, but Drill Bit steps in the way. Menasor tells Drill Bit to step aside....

Galvatron wallops Optimus some more as Override and Evac arrive. Evac says Optimus will let them know when he needs them, but Galvatron races away to go claim the Gigantion Cyber Planet Key. Override, Wing Saber and Evac chase him, and Optimus Prime rejoins. Optimus tells Wing Saber to break off, an order Saber promptly ignores. Galvatron converts to jet mode and rams Saber out of the sky.

Heavy Load leaps from his spot in Menasor's chest and joins Drill Bit in between Menasor and Metroplex. Metroplex gets up, and notes that their partners are right in stopping the fight... Menasor may be going down the path of evil, but Metroplex isn't helping by being so stuck in his ways and forgetting when he was young and cocky, and that the two should be friends again. Metroplex forgives Menasor for his actions, and Menasor rejoins Metroplex's crew. Awww.

Override fires on Galvatron, who returns fire and nails her. Evac continues to chase, and Override shrugs off the damage and contines. Optimus drops to his knees in defeat as the other Autobots catch up. Vector asks Wing Saber to watch over the humans and Mini-Cons while he tends to Optimus.

Inside the Lemuria, Coby's team is heading deeper inside the ship, using the Atlantis layout as a guide. They enter the main hall where the Gigantion Cyber Planet Key rests. Landmine takes the Key and remarks at how easy this was to find for once... which is of course the cue for Starscream to bust in and take down Quickmix.

Back outside, Optimus laments that he's putting everyone's lives at risk in each battle. He recalls how he couldn't stop then-Megatron from blowing away Hot Shot, Red Alert and Scattorshot back on Earth, and that things may be even worse now. Vector gets sick of listening to Optimus' crap and decks him one, and gives him a verbal dressing-down... then a verbal building-up. Optimus' confidence in himself is restored, huzzah!

Back to the action, Evac and Override follow Galvatron inside the Lemuria, where Starscream throws Landmine around, making him drop the Key. Landmine reaches for it, but Starscream stomps on him. Landmine tells Coby to stay back, knowing that the Cobybot doesn't stand a chance. He refuses to give in, and the Cyber Planet Key reacts, causing Landmine to grow to Starscream's size. Landmine finally gets his chance to avenge himself against Starscream, punching him into the ceiling, then following up with his Cyber-Key-powered "Cyber Tempest" wind attack, which sends Starscream through the ceiling and flying out of the ship, sinking into the depths of the surrounding lake.

Galvatron enters the room (through the wall of course), followed by Evac and Override. As the other Autobots approach the Lemuria, Landmine and Galvatron bust out of it, fighting. Override, Evac and Wing Saber join Landmine in the fray, while Optimus and Vector stand around and talk about trust and spirit and stuff. The arrival of Quickmix and the Cybertron Defense Team means further punishment for Galvatron. Metroplex offers Optimus his axe, Optimus powers it up with a Cyber Key, and sends Galvatron flying away with it.

Landmine hands the Cyber Planet Key to Optimus, and he returns to normal size. The remaining Autobots arrive, and Optimus asks them all if they're ready to save the universe. "Yes, sir!"

"Oh, I get it. Inside that hard metal shell he's a great big softie!"<br>
"The only thing left that's hurt are his feelings!"
:-- Evac & Quickmix, on Landmine

"So how many times have we had this battle? Yes, a classic battle of good versus better."
:-- Galvatron

"For such wee fellas, Drill Bit and Heavy Load have more sense than the both of us together!"
:-- Metroplex

"Sheer arrogance! Do you honestly think the Autobots fight these battles for you, Optimus? ... We are here, all of us, because we want to save our homes, and put an end to Galvatron's evil! ... Because of you we fight together as a team! Every single leader throughout history worried about the welfare of his forces when they went into battle, Optimus! But you must trust them to do their duty!"
Other Notes
Animation and/or technical glitches
* Heavy Load pretty blatantly size-changes. When he exits Menasor's chest compartment, he takes up most of the torso, like the actual toy. When we see him in comparison to the others, though, he's tiny.

* In that same long-shot (see screen shot), Metroplex is missing the socket-part of his right ankle assembly.

* In the shot where Override gets hit by Galvatron's blasters, Prime is already supporting her before the bolts collide, making it look like he's holding her so Galvatron can shoot her better.

Continuity errors
*

Transformers references
* Galvatron's "Yes"es in this episode are very Beast Wars Megatronny. Of course, both characters are voiced by David Kaye.

Real-world references
* Coby makes a reference to the based-on-a-novel movie "How Stella Got Her Groove Back".

Miscellaneous trivia
* The defeat of the Cybertron Defense Team happened in the last episode. Optimus also flashes back to the near-fatal shooting of the trio at Megatron's hands back in the episode "Revelations".

* This is the first we ever see of Heavy Load. What was he doing inside Menasor all this time?

* The interior of the Lemuria is colossal; the main chamber's ceiling is several times as high as Quickmix. If the Gigantions were normal-sized when they were actually on the ship....

*Cartoon Network's website listed this episode's title as "Leader."
:Ransack is a Decepticon Insecticon from the Generation 1 continuity family.

Ransack is a fairly simple being. A tough-talking and straight-forward warrior, he craves combat and longs for each new battle. He'll level a whole town, destroy natural wonders, and kill hundreds to complete his mission without batting an optic. Ransack notices such things, sure - he just doesn't care.

Fiction
Marvel Comics continuity
Ransack never actually appeared on-panel in the Marvel comics. His fellow Deluxe Insecticons Venom and Chop Shop were part of the Mayhem Attack Squad on their mission to support the Wreckers against Megatron and Galvatron, but since the combined Wreckers and Mayhems were identified as fourteen warriors (the exact number of characters who appeared on-panel), it cannot be inferred that Barrage was present, but behind the scenes.

Dreamwave comics continuity
After the fragmentatrion of the Decepticon forces following Megatron's seeming destruction in a space bridge accident, Ransack joined Ratbat's Ultracons. He accompanied Ratbat and fellow Ultracons Chop Shop and Venom on a mission to the Tagan Heights, where they unleashed the deadly Devastator on the Wreckers. Capturing the Wreckers' leader Springer, the Ultracons were prevented from executing him when Devastator's battle with Defensor raged out of control. The Dark Ages, Part 2 In the chaos that ensued, Ransack and his allies escaped, leaving Devastator behind. The Dark Ages, Part 2
Ransack, along with Barrage, Chop Shop, and Venom, remained on Cybertron following the departure of the Ark and the Nemesis. The planet's chronic energon shortage reduced them to a vampiric existence, forcing them to capture Micromasters and drain them of their fuel. While pursuing Falcon and Flanker in the Wastelands, they ran into the middle of a conflict between the Hot Rod Patrol and Race Track Patrol. Destined For Nothing

:Transmutate is a non-aligned Transformer from the Beast Wars continuity family.

Transmutate is a mutant Transformer, partially Transmetal, born from a heavily-damaged stasis pod. The creature possesses very little intelligence and is utterly innocent in personality, curious and childlike.

However, it also contains inconceivable destructive power (i.e. super-sonic screams and the ability to fly) to boot, making it extremely dangerous to keep unsupervised and uncontained. Though it has no alternate form, it does have the ability to fly.

Fiction
Beast Wars
Voice actor: Susan Blu (US), Haruna Ikezawa (Japan)

Both factions considered Transmutate to be too dangerous to recruit, and decided to do away with it, but by different means. This caused considerable concern for both Silverbolt and Rampage. Silverbolt felt it was a Maximal's duty to protect all sentient life, and Rampage simply found a kindred spirit in Transmutate's tortured existence.

Transmutate managed to befriend both Transformers, which caused some friction between them. Eventually, they came to blows. Transmutate sacrificed itself in order to prevent the two Transformers from killing each other.

Toys
Beast Wars
Transmutate was never sold as an individual toy. Rather, it was only available with the first two waves of Beast Wars 10th Anniversary toys in 2006; each of the first six releases had a part to "Trans-Mutate" packaged with it. All six parts combined to form a non-transformable figure with limited articulation... but the simple fact that an official figure of a one-episode show character got made is itself an extraordinary occurrence.

*Right arm - Rattrap
*Left arm - Dinobot

Trivia
* A minor point of argument among fans is exactly why the Maximals were so quick to stasis-lock Transmutate instead of transferring its spark to another body like Rhinox did with Optimus Primal following the latter's unintentional sacrifice; it was stated only its core consciousness and body structure was mutilated beyond recovery, but no mention was made about the condition of its spark. Of course, the euthanasia metaphor of the character's titular episode would fall apart if they did that, but hey, semantics.
* According to Ben Yee on Madman Entertainment's Beast Wars Season 2 DVD commentaries, Hasbro attempted to replicate Transmutate's sonic scream attacks first as a spring-loaded projectile, then as a static decoration. Fortunately for the sake of good taste, they abandoned those plans.

:Rhinox is a Maximal in the Beast Era portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

Rhinox is a Renaissance Bot. Intelligent, massive, strong, and stalwart, there are few Maximals one could depend on more. Rhinox is of a rare breed -- he's incredibly tech savvy, but mystically-inclined... without coming off as a burnt-out technohippie. He's quick and decisive in a crisis, with spectacular results, but is slow and steady. He loves to sniff the flowers. A behind-the-scenes charismatic and an on-his-feet strategist, he could lead the Maximals if he wanted to, but he doesn't.

If he sounds too good to be true, it's because he just might be. At times he can be borderline obsessive and single-minded. The Maximals are glad he's on their side, because if he ever had a change of heart, woe be to them. No, woe be to the galaxy.

Still, you can't help but love a bot who can fight Megatron to a standstill without breaking a sweat yet would rather take a nap in a patch of daisies. Rhinox considers Rattrap to be his best friend, though he also has a close friendship with Optimus Primal. He appears to have some "older sibling/parental" emotions toward Airazor due to his role in bringing her online.

Rhinox's only weapons - besides his rather intimidating strength - are his twin chainguns, affectionately named "Chainguns of Doom."

Rhinox's core was an integral part of the evil Vehicon General Tankor.
Voice actor: Richard Newman (English), Daiki Nakamura (Japanese)

Rhinox was a crewmember of the exploration ship Axalon when captain Optimus Primal got word that the Predacon criminal Megatron had stolen the Golden Disk and a ship with transwarp capabilities. The Axalon was the closest vessel that also possessed a transwarp drive, so Rhinox's ship was sent to engage them. After following the Predacons through a transwarp portal and appearing above a mysterious planet, both ships were damaged in the ensuing space battle, and before both ships crashed into the planet's surface below, the stasis pods carrying the rest of Rhinox's crew were ejected into orbit.

The planet was rich with energon -- so much so that prolonged exposure would short out their bodies, so the Maximals and Predacons were forced to take organic forms from the local creatures. Rhinox took the form of a rhinoceros.

When Optimus Primal was dematerialized and absorbed by a mysterious alien probe, Rhinox was forced to juryrig a gizmo to extract Optimus' molecular structure from the probe and reconstruct it. Whether or not this device would actually have worked is unknown, as shortly before he had a chance to use it, Rhinox blasted Waspinator with his chainguns (beginning the running gag of Waspinator being scrapped in every episode), and the wounded Predacon somehow accidentally triggered the Standing Stones construct, which then rematerialized Optimus on its own.

Rhinox later developed Sentinel, a hi-tech security system for the Axalon, which unfortunately went berserk when its control panel was damaged in a struggle between Dinobot and Rattrap. Rattrap however, was able to infiltrate the now-heavily guarded ship and deactivate Sentinel, which was then repaired and made fully-functional by Rhinox.A Better Mousetrap

Sometime later, when the Maximals found themselves cornered by a Predacon ambush, Rhinox was able to take out their attackers with a carefully aimed spray of chaingun fire. Megatron was so impressed that he decided to make Rhinox a member of his merry band of thieves, by force. Rhinox was captured by Tarantulas and then reprogrammed into a Predacon by a device designed by Megatron called a "Transmuter". However, the newly malevolent Rhinox proved to be too much for Megatron to handle, as Optimus Primal had correctly predicted. He quickly dispatched most of the Predacons, working his way up to Megs himself in an attempted coup. Rhinox very nearly succeeded, but fortunately, Megatron was able to revert him back into a Maximal using the Transmuter, and Rhinox escaped to rejoin his Maximal comrades and smell some flowers.

Later, a stasis pod crash landed in a barren wasteland. Rhinox intercepted it and, with Cheetor's help, managed to save the protoform Maximal's spark. The protoform then became Airazor, who repaid the favor by saving the weakened Rhinox from Terrorsaur.

When Scorponok tested an experimental bomb on a group of Maximals, rendering them blind, it was Rhinox who led the group on the dangerous trek back to the Axalon, teaching them how to use their other senses. Of course, they succeeded, and afterwards, Rhinox again went off to smell some flowers.

Later, Tarantulas infected Rhinox with an energon discharge virus, which made him expel his energon reserves via his nasal passages in bursts powerful enough to tear through the hull of the Axalon, threatening both to destroy the Maximals' base and completely drain Rhinox of energy. Rattrap and Dinobot were dispatched to acquire a countervirus, while Rhinox ate some wild bean vines to keep his strength up. When the bickering duo nearly failed in their mission, the other Maximals, including Rhinox, showed up, and the rhinoceros blew away the Predacons with a massive... energon discharge caused by his ingestion of wild beans. Megatron would remember this moment as the most humiliating defeat in his entire career. Rhinox was later cured by the countervirus via a Cybertronic beer hat.

During the Planet Buster crisis, Rhinox was heavily damaged by Tarantulas and Blackarachnia when they infiltrated the Axalon, forcing him to spend the remainder of the crisis in a CR chamber, thereby preventing him from being upgrade into a Transmetal by the quantum surge. Once Rhinox was fully repaired, he initiated a dangerous plan to bring the recently-deceased Optimus Primal back to life by using the hole in space-time caused by the destruction of the Planet Buster to astrally project his spark into the Matrix, where he followed the transion left by Primal's spark and led it back to the land of the living, where it was reborn as Transmetal Optimus Primal.

When Blackarachnia's attempts to become a Transmetal caused her shell program to deteriorate, threatening to erase her core consciousness, Rhinox carried out a very delicate procedure to surgically remove the shell program directly. Unfortunately, certain failsafes installed by Tarantulas, combined with a Predacon attack, caused the operation to fail. Fortunately, Blackarachnia was mysteriously resurrected anyway by the Transmetal driver.

After Megatron raised the Nemesis, Rhinox was ordered by Optimus Primal to execute Operation: Eternity, which apparently only Primal and he knew about. The purpose of the operation was to "move the Ark" by activating its engines and taking off; little is know beyond that, because the Maximals failed when the Ark's engines proved beyond repair. However, Dinobot 2 downloaded emergency data to the Ark about an Autobot shuttle hidden within the Ark. Rhinox piloted the shuttle and flew it directly into the bridge of the Nemesis, taking down Megatron and causing the warship to spiral out of control and crash somewhere beyond the horizon. Thus, the Beast Wars were won. Rhinox and the other Maximals left prehistoric Earth aboard the aforementioned Autobot shuttle and began the voyage home to Cybertron.
: For the Transmetals line of Beast Wars toys, Rhinox now transforms into a robotic rhinoceros. The rhino mode has fold-down skis in the front legs, and tank treads in the rear legs so he can become a kind of snow mobile. In robot mode, he loses his projectile weapon, armed with only his blade, now formed out of his beast mode horn.

: In the Hasbro line, early releases of the toy had a much paler aqua-colored chrome than later versions. Such chrome differences were seemingly common among the Transmetals, but the pale/rich-chrome Rhinoxes seem to be the most common and most likely intentional change.
: The Takara release of Transmetal Rhinox has gold chrome instead of the aqua-blue, and replaces the "RHINOX" tampograph with "CYBERTRON" and the Maximal faction sigil.

: Available only as part of a Hasbro-brand-names fast food promotion (which included miniature versions of other Hasbro properties like Mr. Potato Head), and labeled simply as "Beast Wars", this toy is an extremely simplified version of the Transmetal Rhinox toy, available only at participating Rally's and Checkers resturants.

: Despite it being... well, look at it... it goes for mad money on the secondary market. Most people didn't realize the promotion even existed until after it was over, and the resturant chain seems to be small and somewhat regional.
: Part of the first wave of "Fox Kids" redecoes , and exclusive to Toys "R" Us stores, this toy uses the original Rhinox mold in pale green and burgundy. Hasbro documents listed this toy as "Energon Surge Rhinox", a name that never made it to the final package.
: Part of the last year of mass-retail Beast Wars product (sold concurrently with the early releases of Beast Machines), the Transmetal mold also got a "Fox Kids" redeco in mainly blue and gray... an interesting color choice, given that it's the show-colors of Tankor, who Rhinox would become.

Beast Wars

Rhinox stood outside the Ark as Razorbeast's chronally dispaced Maximals passed by. Although Optimus Primal could vaguely sense their presence, Rhinox theorized that the sensation was just a side-effect of Primal's recent upgrades.
After Tankor's death, Rhinox' spark and consciousness were cleansed and rejoined the Matrix. When Megatron was defeated by Nightscream, Rhinox saw an opportunity to redeem the fallen tyrant, and attempted to act as a spirit guide. Rhinox led Megatron through the ascending layers of Transformer afterlife (which is actually a tree!), urging him to leave behind his fixation on worldly power. Megatron was briefly tempted, but his repeated returns to Cybertron (in Spark of Darkness) convinced him that godhood was still within his reach. Tapping into the power of the Oracle, Megatron erases Rhinox' spark, killing him utterly.
: Rhinox transforms into an a tan rhinoceros. In robot mode, his primary weapon is a spinning blade-gun/double mace-thing/lawn edge trimmer, though the television series liberally interpreted this weapon as a sort of gatling gun (the aforementioned "Chaingun of Doom"). His tail also detaches to become a blade.

* Rhinox (Deluxe, 1999)

* Rhinox (Deluxe Transmetal, 2000)

: For the 10th Anniversary of Beast Wars, Hasbro redecoed the original 1996 Rhinox toy in more show-accurate colours, giving him a darker beast mode colour scheme, and painted gold details on his robot mode head, to more closely match the CGI model. They also tampographed a Maximal sigil on his beast mode's right foreleg.

: Also included was the lower torso and right leg to Transmutate, and a DVD of the Beast Wars epsiode "The Spark".

:Note: This version of Rhinox is assembled with his shoulders on the wrong sides, so the screws that hold them together are visible from the front of the robot.
He transforms into a front-end loader, with pop-out blades in his rear tires that are revealed with the use of a Cyber Planet Key (or his Golden Disc Key, of course). This gimmick and his spring-loaded missile launcher are usable in both modes.

The "Pre-Release Development" is way too big, and contains way too many post-release items better-suited for individual character pages (and likely in the "Trivia" sections thereof). The pre-line stuff, like Jazz, Bumblebee, and Tracks all fits. But pretty much everything else is overkill. --M Sipher 00:12, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

So, uh, some anonymous editor changed all instances of Binaltech to Binal Tech: . I don't think I've ever seen it spelled that way. Can somebody who pays attention to that sort of thing comment? --Steve-o 03:23, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

: While the standard logo uses exaggerated spacing, that spacing is all even. ie: "B I N A L T E C H". Secondly, the Binaltech Asterisk logo does not use the same spacing, and appears very specifically as "BINALTECH ASTERISK". Therefore we must accept that it is one word, not two (and not hypenated either). All the official printed material included with the figures that I've been through seems to represent the English-language word in upper-case, however this is within the context of a sentence. eg: "STORY OF BINALTECH", "THE TRANSFORMERS BINALTECH HOUND feat. Jeep Wrangler". From this material alone, exact capitalization is therefore unclear and it could be argued that it may be represented as "Binaltech", "BINALTECH" or "BinalTech", but certainly must not be represented as "Binal Tech" (or any similar two-word variation).<div id="wikia-credits"><br /><br /><small>From Teletraan I: The Transformers Wiki, a Wikia wiki.</small></div>

Titanium Series is a Hasbro toyline of partly die-cast toys produced by their Galoob branch. Originally consisting entirely of Star Wars vehicles of various sizes, it has since expanded into Battlestar Galactica vehicles, Marvel Comics characters and Transformers.

Transformers Titaniums are produced in two size classes. Robot Masters are 3-inch untransformable die-cast figurines of Transformers characters from various past and present toylines. Cybertron Heroes are 6-inch transformable partly die-cast toys of (so far) new Transformers designs by Don Figueroa.

It is worth noting that since the Titaniums are developed by a separate branch of Hasbro from the normal Transformers team (who only has some input into character choices and looks), they do not take away "slots" from other Transformers lines. They are also not engineered or "mech-designed" by Takara.

They are also not actually made of titanium.

At BotCon 2007, Hasbro announced that with the release of the currently announced figures, the line will come to an end. While Hasbro also showed prototypes of 6" figures for Arcee, Cosmos, Shockwave and War Within Bumblebee, they are not included in the aforementioned announced figures. However, the Transformers Collectors Club roundtable has suggested there "may still be hope" for these figures to be produced in some form.
