:Ironhide was part of the original assortment of [[Autobot]] cars released in 1984, transforming into a red Nissan Onebox Cherry Vanette and sharing his mold with the contemporaneously released [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]]. Ironhide splits when he transforms, with most of the rear section of his van mode transforming into a [[Onebox component|battle platform]], and the remainder becoming his rather misshapen, headless robot form. The robot can mount onto the battle platform, which is armed with a raising missile launcher and front-mounted "Static Laser Gun". Unusually for toys of this period, the Static Laser Gun can actually store when Ironhide is in vehicle mode, plugging into his undercarriage (although the missiles for his launcher and the peg required to attach the laser don't go anywhere).

:As with all his fellow Autobot Cars from that year, Ironhide's mold derived from [[TakaraTomy|Takara]]'s ''[[Diaclone]]'' line, a series which was ''not'' about sentient robots, but rather human-controlled machines. The Ironhide and Ratchet molds are the ones that most clearly show evidence of this: in place of a head, these toy robots had chairs behind windscreens where the human rider would control the robot. The figures did include [[sticker]]s to go over these seats that depicted a sort of robot face, but when Ironhide and Ratchet's [[character model]]s were created for ''Transformers'' media, they did away with all traces of the human-controlled design to give the robots proper faces and heads, ultimately creating the two designs which were the most far-removed from the toys on which they were ostensibly based.

:The stripe on the side of his vehicle mode (a sticker on the toy) is actually based on a special edition of the Nissan Cherry Vanette. : Ironhide transforms from an elephant via a rather complex process involving numerous hinges and unfolding panels into a rather stumpy robot. Although dumpy, he is nothing if not well-armed: he has a flip-out spike at the end of each arm, and comes with two removable guns that flip out from behind his elephant mode ears, and which can be plugged into the holes at the ends of his arms. Ironhide is packaged with [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]] and [[Silverbolt (G1)|Silverbolt]], and combines with them to form his [[Magnaboss]]. : Ironhide's original Generation 1 toy was made available again in mid-December 2007 as part of Takara's ongoing ''[[Encore]]'' line of [[Generation 1 reissues|reissues]]. This version was distinguished by the inclusion of a "head" of sorts for the figure: one of the toy's box flaps featured an illustration of Ironhide's cartoon-design head and chest windshield which could be punched out along its perforated edges, and then slotted behind the toy's windshield. This hid the "chair-face" of the original toy and gave Ironhide his cartoon face... at the cost of making his arms appear to grow out of his waist.

:The new [[bio]] accompanying the release of the toy notes that Ironhide acquired this protective black coating to disguise himself from both Decepticons and members of the [[human]] criminal underworld, to better allow him to do his job as Optimus Prime's bodyguard. On the day before Figueroa was scheduled to go [[United States of America|home]] on leave from [[Qatar]], the Chief Warrant Officer and the rest of the [[United States Army|US Army Rangers]] under the command of Captain [[William Lennox]] were returning to [[United States of America|U.S.]] [[SOCCENT Forward Operations Base]] on board two CV-22 Ospreys after a mission. Discussing what they wanted to do when they got home, Fig at first spoke in Spanish, then switched the English due to the amused complaints of the other soldiers. He cited that he was proud of his heritage and it was his right to speak his native language, then continued with his opinion that alligator meat was the most succulent there is. Sergeant [[Robert Epps|Epps]] declared that he would never eat at Fig's house.

As night fell, the base was suddenly under siege by an [[Blackout (Movie)|unidentified MH-53 Pave Low]] that turned into some sort of walking battle platform. Sergeant Epps was almost crushed by the machine as he tried to escape. Epps recorded images of the attacker when Fig noticed it had activated some sort of weapon from its chest and quickly fired a sabot from his grenade launcher, damaging the 'weapon' under its armour and allowing himself, Lennox, [[Patrick Donnelly|Sergeant Donnelly]], Epps, local boy [[Mahfouz]] and the remainder of the soldiers in their unit to escape as SOCCENT was destroyed.

The next day, the survivors discussed the previous night's attack. Fig said that his mother had a gift of precognition, and it was passed to him. He had a feeling that it wasn't over. Later, as they reached the outskirts of Mahfouz's village, a billboard tower suddenly came crashing down. Donnelly turned to ask what the heck had happened, and Fig replied in Spanish, prompting Donnelly to tell him to speak in English.

Suddenly, they were under attack from a [[Scorponok (Movie)|strange metal scorpion]] that came out of the sand, then dived under it again. As Fig and Donnelly searched for signs of the attacker, it suddenly came up behind Donelley and impaled him in the chest, killing him. The rest of the men ran for the relative cover of the village and set up a defensive perimeter as Lennox attempted to call for air cover from the [[Pentagon]]. Fig was providing suppression fire when one of the metal scorpion's missiles exploded behind the soldier, seriously injuring him.

After command was contacted and the scorpion repelled, Lennox and Epps went to check on their downed friend. Fig had a pulse and was carried off on a stretcher and evacuated by helicopter in the sunset.

Later, Fig and the others were transported back to the United States via a [[United States Air Force#C-17 Globemaster III|C-17 transport plane]]. On the day before Figueroa was scheduled to go [[United States of America|home]] on leave from [[Qatar]], the Chief Warrant Officer and the rest of the [[United States Army|US Army Rangers]] under the command of Captain [[William Lennox]] were returning to [[United States of America|U.S.]] [[SOCCENT Forward Operations Base]] on board two CV-22 Ospreys after a mission. Discussing what they wanted to do when they got home, Fig at first spoke in Spanish, then switched the English due to the amused complaints of the other soldiers. He cited that he was proud of his heritage and it was his right to speak his native language, then continued with his opinion that alligator meat was the most succulent there is. Sergeant [[Robert Epps|Epps]] declared that he would never eat at Fig's house.

As night fell, the base was suddenly under siege by an [[Blackout (Movie)|unidentified MH-53 Pave Low]] that turned into some sort of walking battle platform. Sergeant Epps was almost crushed by the machine as he tried to escape. Epps recorded images of the attacker when Fig noticed it had activated some sort of weapon from its chest and quickly fired a sabot from his grenade launcher, damaging the 'weapon' under its armour and allowing himself, Lennox, [[Patrick Donnelly|Sergeant Donnelly]], Epps, local boy [[Mahfouz]] and the remainder of the soldiers in their unit to escape as SOCCENT was destroyed.

The next day, the survivors discussed the previous night's attack. Fig said that his mother had a gift of precognition, and it was passed to him. He had a feeling that it wasn't over. Later, as they reached the outskirts of Mahfouz's village, a billboard tower suddenly came crashing down. Donnelly turned to ask what the heck had happened, and Fig replied in Spanish, prompting Donnelly to tell him to speak in English.

Suddenly, they were under attack from a [[Scorponok (Movie)|strange metal scorpion]] that came out of the sand, then dived under it again. As Fig and Donnelly searched for signs of the attacker, it suddenly came up behind Donelley and impaled him in the chest, killing him. The rest of the men ran for the relative cover of the village and set up a defensive perimeter as Lennox attempted to call for air cover from the [[Pentagon]]. Fig was providing suppression fire when one of the metal scorpion's missiles exploded behind the soldier, seriously injuring him.

After command was contacted and the scorpion repelled, Lennox and Epps went to check on their downed friend. Fig had a pulse and was carried off on a stretcher and evacuated by helicopter in the sunset.

Later, Fig and the others were transported back to the United States via a [[United States Air Force#C-17 Globemaster III|C-17 transport plane]]. A Driller, this one partially reengineered to serve as Shockwave's chariot and warhound, was summoned alongside its master, at Alexi Voskhod's orders, to attack Optimus Prime when NEST was dispatched to Chernobyl. This was only misdirection, to ensure that the Autobots did not realize that the Decepticons actually wanted them to find the fuel cell from the Ark located within the facility. After Optimus retrieved the fuel cell from the Driller, Shockwave emerged from it to reveal himself to Optimus, and the pair quickly retreated underground. The experience left Optimus somewhat shaken, and angry with the humans that they had concealed the Ark from the Autobots.

Later on, the Driller was present in [[Chicago]], proving to be a deadly threat. It crawled his way in and through a toppling skyscraper by Shockwave's command to flush out Sam Witwicky and his allies, but Optimus, with a jet pack and upgraded weapons from his trailer, attacked it in midair and apparently killed it by slamming his entire body through its head. {{storylink|Dark of the Moon (film)}}

[[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]] predicts virtually no [[Autobot]]s will respond to his open invitation to join him, but Rodimus winds up with a little over two hundred recruits, including (much to [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]]'s consternation) [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]]—who believes he is getting old, a concern punctuated by his failure to save the life of a [[NAIL]] who has committed suicide as a political protest—[[Chromedome (G1)|Chromedome]]—the loss of whose scientific talents particularly infuriates Prowl, prompting him to order the loading of a mysterious cargo onto the ''Lost Light''—and Chromedome's friend, [[Rewind]]. [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]], of course, has misgivings about nearly every recruit, but Rodimus is thrilled to have so many.

In the skies above Cybertron, [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]] grieves in his own way for the loss of the world he had known and all the memories he made there. Detecting a life-sign resembling [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]]'s, he investigates a small shack, only to find the unhinged [[Whirl (G1)|Whirl]] talking to a collection of [[Sweep]] corpses that he has strung up inside. Cyclonus enters and interrupts him just as he is about to burn down the [[energon]]-soaked building, and Whirl immediately attacks him, professing innocence and explaining the bodies were already dead: he had merely collected them. Cyclonus, for his part, doesn't care in the slightest, but can't convince Whirl of this fact.

Elsewhere, [[Red Alert (G1)|Red Alert]] is running security checks on the Autobots who have signed up to join the ''Lost Light'': [[Brainstorm]], carrying a mysterious briefcase but exempted from security checks by Rodimus; [[Swerve (G1)|Swerve]], in the mood for "a good quest"; and [[Rung]], whom Red Alert does not recognize at first, despite having been a patient of his for six centuries. Rung tempts fate by commenting on his knack for staying out of trouble: before the sentence is even finished, Cyclonus and Whirl's running battle swoops through the area, and Rung winds up with his forearm cleaved off by Cyclonus's wing.

Ratchet, Chromedome and Rewind, meanwhile, are making for the ''Lost Light'' through the [[Mitteous Plateau]], but are running behind schedule due to Rewind's lack of a vehicular [[alternate mode]], a trait of his that Chromedome has never understood. Just as the group are about to start having an argument about the validity of alt mode variety, Cyclonus and Whirl come crashing down out of the sky, their battle at an end with Whirl the victor. Whirl spins a few quick lies and is about to deliver a killshot when a sudden, unexpected energon explosion from beneath the ground blows him to bits. Peering into the blast crater, the Autobots find [[Tailgate (G1)|Tailgate]], who, unbeknownst to them, is a Cybertronian from six million years ago who was supposed to be on the ''[[Ark (G1)#IDW Generation 1 comics|Ark I]]'', but became trapped underground in a subsidence. He has spent the past six thousand millennia periodically going offline and reawakening, unaware that any time has passed, until he was just now finally able to detonate the energon rations he had with him in bid for freedom. Panicking and passing out before he can tell anyone any of this due to his belief he has killed Whirl, Tailgate is brought aboard the ''Lost Light'' by the Autobots, as are Whirl and Cyclonus. Rewind takes advantage of the brief confusion to slip off and purchase some golden discs from [[Swindle (G1)|Swindle]].

Soon after, the ''Lost Light'' takes off, and Bumblebee complains to Prowl that he thought he had a plan... at which point the ship is crippled by a mysterious explosion that forces the ship to [[quantum jump]] before preparation is complete, hurling it off to some far corner of the galaxy. A fifth of the ship's crew is sucked out into space before the breached hull repairs itself, and Rodimus orders them to set down on a desolate nearby planet, where they watch as the Autobots come raining down, burning up as they enter the atmosphere. All in all, as Rodimus succinctly puts it: "Not a good start."

And back on Cybertron, as Bumblebee sits in horrified mourning, back in Prowl's quarters a scrambled transmission plays. A transmission from one of the ''Lost Light''<nowiki>'</nowiki>'s crew. A transmission that has been sent back in time, from the future. But it has arrived too late, and now Rodimus will never hear the warnings of the dangers that await them...
