:No. At least, I don't think there is any reason to. With all of the "it is believed that..." and "it may have come from..."s it sets itself up as an unreliable, in-fiction source. It seems the book has an in-fiction author who doesn't know all of the facts as to what really happened so it doesn't actually retcon anything. - Starfield 23:48, 11 November 2009 (EST)
: Well, the "new" information that aren't obviously errors or continuity flubs, we can address. Like the awful sentence about how the Seekers were "special" and that they "ruled the skies and were noble," and how their addition to Megatron's insurgence gave it legitimacy. --ItsWalky 23:53, 11 November 2009 (EST)

No one knows the dead quite as well as the Decepticon hypnotist, Mindwipe. A mysterious and mystical one, Mindwipe claims to have the powers to commune with Transformers who have long since left this plane of existence. From Black Sabbaths to seances to super-conductive antennaes, Mindwipe knows of many methods to reach those who now rest in peace.

Well...not really. He desperately wants to speak with the departed sparks of dead Decepticons, but all his labors to create antennae and receivers for the departed have had... "limited" success. In reality, all he's picking up are radio broadcasts of old Earth sitcoms, which he's actually become quite fond of. Still, some day, Mindwipe hopes to finally bridge the gap between the realm of the living and the realm of the dead.

Despite those shortcomings, Mindwipe is a formidable opponent, able to hypnotize and control both organic and mechanical lifeforms just by making eye contact, and with an eerie and potent precognitive "sixth sense." He is binary bonded to the Nebulan Vorath.
Generation 1
Mindwipe once got really mad at Scorponok for allowing Starscream back onto the Decepticons, so when Starscream went AWOL, Mindwipe ran off and joined Starscream.

Yup. Move along. Nothing to see here.... Eye of the Storm

As part of the plan to overthrow Scorponok, he hypnotised Field Commander Soundwave with the intention of controlling the troops through him... at which point the Autobots poked a gun at him and said they'd really like it if Soundwave was advocating the Autobot-Decepticon alliance. Out of Time!

charstubfiction

Earthforce
earthforcefiction
After having been thrown out of the Decepticon army for trying to hypnotize Scorponok into making him leader, Mindwipe devised a master scheme of his own. He manufactured thousands of thought-sensitive Sleepfast(TM) night lights, selling them to humans on the novelty that they actually turned on or off just by thinking at them. Little did the humans know, however, that repetitive use of the night lights had a subliminal mind control effect. Over time, Mindwipe would have gained an army of human slaves! Luckily for humanity, the Autobots Wheeljack and Snarl came to investigate, and confronted Mindwipe in his storage facility. He was beaten by his own night lights when the Autobots suddenly thought "Lights on!" in a darkened room, turning on thousands of Sleepfasts(TM) at once and temporarily blinding the Decepticon.

Mindwipe was, to coin a phrase, bat-sh*t nuts. The Living Nightlights!

Generation 2
Mindwipe was still a part of the Decepticons after Megatron took back control of the army from Bludgeon. He was involved in the disastrous first encounter between Megatron's troops and Jhiaxus's Cybertronian Empire. After Megatron was literally knocked out of orbit by Jhiaxus and plummeted to the planet below, Mindwipe joined Soundwave, Drag Strip and Weirdwolf in looking for their fallen leader. He was in the midst of voicing the selfish but sensible idea of abandoning Megatron to his fate and gettin' the slag outta there when Drag Strip found their commander. New Dawn
Mindwipe was one of the many Decepticons who attacked Autobot City. He used his hypnotic powers to send Lightspeed driving down into a lake. The Rebirth, Part 1

Mindwipe was later one of the Decepticons who underwent binary bonding to become Headmasters. Mindwipe found that his hypnosis could control Vorath, making his binary bonding the most advantageous of the Decepticon/Hive alliance. Mindwipe was also able to use his extra-sensory perception to reveal that Brainstorm was carrying the key to the plasma energy chamber. The Rebirth, Part 2

During the Dark Ages, when Optimus Prime and Megatron were believed to have been killed in a space bridge test, Mindwipe was part of the Chaos Trinity that attempted to use dark science to manipulate events in their favor. When the mysterious, frighteningly-powerful being known as The Fallen arrived and offered them dark powers in exchange for their services, they agreed. Fragmentation The three managed to initiate a serious surge in factional engagements, in an attempt to isolate the Angles of Dissolution that the Fallen needed. During their attempt to secure Jetfire, Mindwipe managed to put the Autobot scientist into a trance, while Bludgeon and Bugly put Shockwave out of commission. When Grimlock, another target, surprised them, Mindwipe was confident he could do the same to Grimlock.

He got thrown into a wall for his troubles. The Fallen had to pull their exhaust ports out of the fire. Revelation (The Dark Ages)

: Mindwipe transforms into a robotic bat. In this mode, Vorath fits into his chest compartment. The tail gets in the way and prevents the bat from standing in an upright position, unless one swings the tail to the front (as seen in the picture), which, while hilarious looking, isn't the correct orientation. One solution is to unscrew the toy and flip the tail over so it angles upwards. Doing this doubly benefits the beast mode in that the tail now acts as a sort of third leg for stability.

:In robot mode, Vorath forms his head; attaching him activates a tumbler mechanism that displays an abbreviated set of tech specs behind the robot-mode chest panel. Mindwipe and Vorath are both cross-compatible with any other Generation 1 Headmaster body/head.
* In the television commercial for Marvel Comics' Headmasters limited series, the Autobot and Decepticon Headmasters are shown having different head designs than the ones their Nebulan partners would later turn into. These designs were seemingly never used in any other piece of Transformers media. The models for most of them, however, turned up in the excellent Transformers Generations guidebook... except for Mindwipe's.
Synopsis
On the run from Galvatron, Rodimus Prime, Arcee, Ultra Magnus, Kup, Spike and Daniel take refuge on board the Autobot Mausoleum containing many of their deceased comrades. These include Ironhide, Prowl, Ratchet, Huffer, and Optimus Prime. While exploring by himself, Daniel is stuck in a dark room with robot corpses and gets appropriately creeped out. When he finds the others he swears he has seen Optimus Prime alive. To satisfy his curiosity and against the opinions of the other Autobots, Rodimus opens Prime's tomb only to find it empty.

However, they cannot investigate further because the Decepticons have followed them inside and attack them. The fierce battle that follows appears lost for the Autobots when suddenly they are saved by none other than Optimus Prime. Freaked, the Decepticons retreat.

The Autobots are amazed and confused at his presence. Optimus can give them no explanation to his apparent resurrection, just the typical near-death experience of seeing darkness and then a light at the end of the tunnel.

Rodimus Prime eagerly (too eagerly) returns the Matrix of Leadership to him, despite Prime's bizarre behavior and damaged appearance, and against the advice of Kup and Ultra Magnus. Without the Matrix inside him, Rodimus reverts to Hot Rod and declares, "Let's party!" Optimus evidently has other plans and attacks the Autobots and sets the auto-destruct sequence to the mausoleum ship. He then departs and leaves the others stranded.

After returning to Cybertron, Optimus informs the Autobots that Rodimus and the others were killed by the Quintessons. This puts everyone in a pretty bad mood (Springer swears vengeance- particularly for Arcee- while Grimlock spends at least a minute stomping and thumping his tail). Optimus re-assumes command and orders an all-out attack on a supposed Quintesson base. The Autobots obey without question or explanation (loyal bunch, aren't they?) and the entire Autobot fleet heads into battle. The Dinobots stay behind to "guard the base".

Hot Rod and his group manage to escape and return to Cybertron, only to find that most of the Autobots have left to attack the Quintessons. They pursue the fleet in their own ship, but their frantic calls to stop the attack are dismissed by Optimus as Quintesson tricks.

Hot Rod and the others finally manage to board the lead ship and the former Rodimus goes "Optimus hunting" after his zombified mentor. When the two meet, Optimus starts to pound on Hot Rod, but as he's kicking Hot Rod's tailpipe he begs Hot Rod to defeat him.

It is finally revealed that the Quintessons stole Optimus Prime's corpse and reanimated it with their own evil programming to lead all Autobots into a trap. Optimus is nothing more than a "mindless zombie." However, since the Matrix of Leadership is inside him, Prime's true, heroic self is overriding the Quintesson evil.

Hot Rod is physically overcome by Prime, but the Matrix finally reverts the evil programming and Optimus returns it to Hot Rod's chest cavity. Prime then takes control of the ship, and orders the Autobot fleet away from the Quintesson trap.

The irreparable Optimus's last act is to pilot the Autobot flagship into the trigger zone of the Quintesson trap. With a massive explosion, the solar system is destroyed. As Kup bids his old friend farewell, Magnus remarks that it be his memorial. Rodimus doubts he'll be the Autobot leader that Optimus Prime was, but vows to try. And thus, the tears of Daniel Witwicky and many other thousands of young boys flowed all over again.

Notes
* This episode originally aired early in Season 3. However, it was re-aired as the season drew to a close, as a lead-in to the latest episode, "The Return of Optimus Prime". The voiceover by Victor Caroli, described above, was added at this time, and subsequently became the more well-known ending. The original version was released on VHS by Kid Rhino, but when the company released the episode on DVD, the altered ending was the only one included (despite the presence of no less than three audio tracks on the disc). Observing the frustration this caused among American fans, DVD consultant Chris McFeely helped ensure the restoration of the original ending for Metrodome DVD release of the episode, with the alternate ending included as an easter egg. The original ending is also the version featured on the Shout! Factory DVD sets.
* When Daniel lists the names of the Autobots killed in the shuttle ambush, Brawn (the first casualty of the movie) is mysteriously absent, replaced instead by Huffer (whose death is unseen). Brawn and Huffer (discolored) later reappeared in the episode "Carnage in C-Minor" (This is usually dismissed as an animation error)
* Skyfire is seen with Powerglide and the Aerialbots. And there was much rejoicing (hooray).

Animation or technical glitches
* In the first closeup scene (after Daniel politely turns on the light on a tomb), Optimus has a much more damaged look (both chest windows are broken showing internal circuitry, his mouthplate is broken, and the overall look of the chest area is more worn out. For the remainder of the episode, he is drawn with the damaged look from the movie.
* Hot Rod is occasionally drawn as Rodimus and even addressed as such a couple of times.
* When Optimus is in control of the flagship and orders the other Autobots to return, he has his left arm again... and the hand colored wrong.
* When Cyclonus shoots Arcee, the blast comes from WAY too low from the gun, coming instead from his third knuckle.
* Right after Optimus Prime shoots Hot Rod, Kup, Arcee, Daniel and Spike, the top of his helmet is colored gray. A few seconds later, his back is colored baby blue.
* Immediately after this, Kup, Ultra Magnus and Rodimus fire purple laser blasts.
* When Perceptor shouts "They're alive!", Blaster (with a white helmet) and what appears to be a miscoloured Jazz are standing in the background, despite the bridge looking somewhat empty, save for himself and Optimus.
* Not a glitch so much as a strange shortcut: the Quintessons' lines, "Perhaps we should seek some cover." and "No. Place your faith in our defense systems." are both recycled from "Five Faces of Darkness" Part 2.

Continuity errors
* Rodimus Prime and his crew were surprised to find the Autobot Mausoleum, suggesting they forgot where it was. Why didn't the Autobots just put the Mausoleum somewhere on Cybertron?

*When Daniel accidentally turns off a light and tries to turn around again, he sees Optimus Prime covered what appear to be spiderwebs. Leaving aside the question of organic spiders existing in an Autobot mausoleum and spinning webs to catch organic insects there, Prime has recently been worked on by the Quintessons, so there hasn't really been time for such webs to accumulate again. What, did Prime or the Quints set up some prop webs for atmosphere?

* Shortly after Optimus Prime first awakens, Rodimus Prime states that Optimus has been dead "for years". Unless he means dog years, this is impossible, considering season 3 starts immediately after the 1986 movie. Also, Daniel is the same age he was when Optimus died. In actuality, Optimus probably hasn't been dead more than a few months. This works a little better in Japan, though, where the series takes place in 2010.

* It's never explained where Hot Rod and company obtained the ship that carries them away from the Mausoleum. Magnus just comments vaguely about "this little improvisation" in reference to the vessel.

* Until the Matrix overruns the Quintesson's programming, Optimus mouthplate doesn't move while he speaks. Not that this isn't a first. However, after that event the mouthplate moves along as Optimus is speaking.

Transformers references
* The deaths of the Autobots happened in The Transformers: The Movie.
* It is later revealed that, while reanimating Optimus Prime into a zombie, the Quintessons analyzed his specifications and used them to build Guiltaur. Transformers 2010 (story page)

Real-world references
* Writer Antoni Zalewski recycled his own work for the opening scene of this episode, which is copied almost note-for-note from the 1985 "Ghost Ship" episode of The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians. The parallels include a pursuit through space, launching an escape pod ("We turned the cockpit into an escape ship just in time!"), right up to Spike's verbatim quote "It's the size of...Manhattan!"
*The Transformers — Season Two, Volume Two: 25th Anniversary Edition (January 12, 2010)

*The Transformers — Seasons Three & Four: 25th Anniversary Edition (Release date TBA)

Restoration
*Shout! Factory conducted a painstaking editing process to correct the animation errors and sound effect additions made by Kid Rhino and Magno Sound & Video.

:From the DVD insert: "Transformers DVDs released prior to our 25th Anniversary Edition were missing animation seen in the original broadcast. We did extensive research, found the discrepancies between the original broadcast masters and the restored masters used for the last DVD release, reinserted the correct animation, and color corrected it as best we could to match the shots before and after. But because a one-inch master tape simply can't hold up to the quality of the restored masters, you may notice occasional shots -- or even scenes -- in some episodes that seem slightly softer than others. Just take comfort in knowing that laser blasts have been reinserted, backgrounds have been corrected and Starscream is Starscream once again."

:Some of the fixed scenes are indeed "softer" than the surrounding animation--though since the last time the correct versions were released for North American purchase was on VHS tapes over 10 years ago, by this point the S!F versions probably look as good as or better than them. Though not absolutely every Kid Rhino coloring error was fixed, the vast majority were, and certainly all of the sequences of mistaken animation that confused the plot were fixed. S!F even repaired some audio errors that had been present on several prior releases of "Fire on the Mountain," and also included the <s>totally better</s> original, non-narrated closing sequence for "Dark Awakening" where Kid Rhino had used the later version.

*A version of the theme song including all of the extra sound effects introduced by Magno is used on the DVD title menu, but not in the actual episodes.
