Machine Wars was an awkward little line of Transformers released in 1997 as a Kay-Bee Toy Works exclusive. Apparently the line was an attempt to bring vehicular characters back into Transformers, but one must ask how effective this was, as almost no one knew about the line. As a result, only one wave of figures was produced, and memory of the line has mostly faded.
Alternators are a line of Transformers based on actual cars from automobile manufacturers around the globe. It's basically an American import of the Japanese Binaltech line, with the important difference that Alternators have no metal parts like their Japanese brethren, dropping the price of a figure about $30. Fans tend to love Alternators for their attention to detail and their updating of 1980s characters in clever modern ways, but have distaste for the massive number of repaints/slight remolds to come out of the line, some molds having been used as much as three times already.
Note: Since Alternators don't come out in waves so much as in groups of one-three roughly every season, they'll simply be listed in order of release without differentiation as to when that release happened.

Armada was the first Transformers show to be co-developed in the United States and Japan; however, it was animated and aired in Japan first, and was dubbed for US markets. Armada added to the Transformers mythology the notion of Minicons, a tiny (human-sized) race of Transformers that, when "powerlinked" to their larger brethren, would unleash a floodgate of energy. Because of the great potential for their exploitation, the Minicons attempted to abstain from the Autobot/Decepticon war and fled Cybertron, crashing several of their ships on or near Earth. When they're accidentally reactivated in 2002 by several clumsy teenagers, a beacon alerts both Autobots and Decepticons on Cybertron, who track them here and begin their battle again. Armada was plagued with translation errors, particularly the misnaming of characters, and as far as writing quality it was not nearly up to the standards Beast Wars had set six years before, often containing juvenile dialog and stock science-fiction plots. Still, after the failure of Beast Machines and the greatly unoriginal Robots in Disguise, many welcomed the freshness of Armada, as well as the new features it brought to both the Transformers toyline and its greater story as a whole.

Robots in Disguise was the first dubbed Transformers show a US audience had ever received. It aired in the two-year gap between Beast Machines and Armada. The premise was wholly unoriginal; it took the same set-up as the original cartoon series and made a few minor alterations (such as Megatron being a Predacon, not a Decepticon). One notable difference in Robots in Disguise, though, was the profusion of humor, especially in the fan-beloved character of Skybite. Robots in Disguise was a dub of the Japanese series Car Robots, which had aired in Japan while Beast Machines finished its run in the United States. The dub quality tended to be poor, as did, usually, the quality of writing/translation. Ultimately, Robots in Disguise is a fairly forgettable Transformers series, especially as it added little new to Transformers mythology; however, Skybite's limmericks shall live on in the mind of many a fan.

By more forgiving Transfans, Beast Machines is remembered as the series which tried to tackle a heavy philosophical concept--what it meant to live in an increasingly technological society--and didn't always suceed. Many fans, however, are not so forgiving, and recall with hatred the "hippie" agenda of this follow-up to Beast Wars, going so far as to send story editor Bob Skir death threats, causing him to cancel a convention appearance in 2000. Beast Machines followed the adventures of the core Beast Wars cast upon their return home to Cybertron; there, Optimus Primal and his crew find that the whole planet has been made mindless slaves of Megatron, who somehow escaped his captivity (seen at the close of Beast Wars). Throughout Beast Machines two seasons, Primal and his fellow Maximals learn to balance their technological side with a newly-retconned biological aspect, eventually turning Cybertron into an organic paradise. Like Beast Wars, Beast Machines was fully CGI; unlike Beast Wars, the show did not go over well. Hasbro's next foray into animation, perhaps as an effort to recover, would be to bring over a year-old Japanese show for consumption in the US, until a new story could be concocted.

Chances are that if someone's talking about Transformers, they're talking about this cartoon series. More than any other of the many media which Transformers have invaded in the past 20+ years, it is the original cartoon (1984-1987) which captured the imagination of children and children-at-heart worldwide. This cartoon set up the basic story of Transformers that all other incarnations were to follow: two warring factions of robots on the planet Cybertron leave in search of resources. The factions crash-land on Earth and, millions of years later, begin their battle anew in Reagan-era America and across the globe. Through its 97-episode run this series took viewers to many strange places and times: the alien Cybertron, the Earth's prehistoric past, the Earth's then-future of 2005, the Metropolis-like society of Nebulos, and more. And although not the best-written or drawn cartoon to ever air, its capacity to stimulate viewers with a concept never seen before is, some might argue, unsurpassed in the world of animation.
Of course it was only a matter of time before these two licensing giants of the 1980s, now in the hands of independent pubslishers, met, and in fact an early set of crossover posters (in G.I. Both Devil's Due and Dreamwave produced two series of crossovers, though for financial reasons Dreamwave's second series only managed to get out a single issue. While Dreamwave's crossovers often tried to reimagine both properties in some unique way, Devil's Due took a more straightforward approach, taking up the question of what would happen if the regular stories of G.I. Joe and the Transformers just happened to intersect. For a time, there was gigantic buzz surrounding Dreamwave's relaunch of the Generation 1 title, even pushing it past Marvel and DC's top titles. Many comic book fans had been away from Transformers for a long time and were overjoyed to see highly detailed manga-style art driving a childhood favorite. Dreamwave published a good deal of Transformers books, including many varied miniseries, before capitulating to the notoriously fickle comic-buying public.
It is a little-known fact that, despite the 80s cartoon being the most recognizable bit of Transformers media, the Marvel comic actually came first. One of the twin titans of the comic-book industry, Marvel published to date the longest run of consecutive Transformer comics, from 1984-1990, and picked up again for a year of "Generation 2" in 1992. Marvel's run is notorious for its wildly variable quality, with a high point generally considered to be Simon Furman's run on the last 1/3 of the US series, and a low point the story arcs roughly between issues #20 and #40, which pushed suspension of disbelief to a new height ("Carwash of Doom" is the most oft-cited example). Artistic quality never approached the standards of Dreamwave's later books. Still, the Marvel issues provide a major topic of conversation for the Transfan--often because of their lackluster quality.

Dreamwave was a fairly unknown independant comic book publisher when it received the Transformers license in 2001. At the very end of 2004, Dreamwave declared bankruptcy, and there were no Transformers comics to be had for more than half of 2005.

In May 2005 it was announced that independent comic publisher IDW would be the next company to play with the Transformers license, following the financial collapse of their predecessor, Dreamwave, at the tail-end of 2004. Right now little is known about the company's plans. The flagship title will be a rebooted G1 continuity written by longtime Transformers scribe Simon Furman, with art by E.J. Su (who's previously worked on G.I. Joe/Transformers Vol. 2 for Devil's Due). The first story arc will be entitled "Infiltration" and will play up the fact that Transformers are literally "robots in disguise." Issue #0 will hit at the end of October 2005, with #1 following in January 2006. "Infiltration" will be a six-issue story arc. In interviews, Furman has strongly hinted that a Beast Wars title will shortly follow as well, to mark this offshoot's tenth anniversary.
