Unicron Trilogy
Animated continuity
Unicron created the Mini-Cons to be mindless tools, sent to Cybertron as an agitating element to the Transformers' civil war. The power-enhancing "smart tools" would be unleashed upon the populace, who would snap them up, bond with them, and the war would only get bloodier, as Unicron drank in the negative psychic energies from the death and destruction. Once he'd gathered the power he needed, the Mini-Cons would turn on their supposed masters, incapacitating them, and Unicron would fully awaken to devour the planet and all Transformers on it, eliminating his biggest obstacle to devouring all of existance.

But through a strange warp in space and time, three human children from the future -Rad, Carlos and Alexis- were sent to the Mini-Cons' birthing chamber on Cybertron just seconds before the small robots emerged from their pods. As the Mini-Cons had been designed to form mental bonds with other life forms, when Rad touched the Mini-Con who he knew from the future as High Wire, High Wire apparently formed his bond then, with Rad... and through the Mini-Cons' shared "soul dimension", the Linkage, sentience and free will spread throughout the Mini-Cons, forming "souls", and crippling Unicron's plans drastically.

Dreamwave comics continuity
Mini-Cons are a 3rd race of Transformer, mostly living in designated sectors by themselves, which left them open to attack when Megatron led his Decepticons on capture raids. Mini-Cons are capable of adding their power (disproportionate to their size) to a Transformer with whom they Powerlinx. Mini-Cons are also capable of tapping an extradimensional energy source of unknown origin, but are wary of doing this, and most have inhibitors installed to prevent this from happening.

Over-Run, a Mini-Con refugee from another dimension led Cybertron's collected Mini-Cons in tapping that dimension's energies and channeling them into an attack on Unicron which left him stranded on the far fringes of space.
After Unicron's defeat, most Mini-Cons re-established their villages in the Mini-Con sector. When Unicron appeared again 10 years later, no one went to fetch the Mini-Cons to battle Unicron again, so it seems likely the Mini-Cons connection to their extradimensional power source was severed.

There is no indication that Mini-Cons are related to Unicron in Dreamwave continuity.

Powerlinx and Evolution
Mini-cons have the special ability to actually evolve other machines. From transforming simple cars into jet-powered assault vehicles, to upgrading Transformers to have new weapons spring from their body. The nature of Powerlinking is emphasized more in the Japanese Micron Legend counterpart to Transformers Armada. Once powerlinked, the Autobot would call out "EVOLUTION!" and a portion of their body would literally reconfigure to become a new weapon. Afterwards, they retained this new ability without the powerlinking of the mini-con which granted it. Linking to that mini-con again simply enhances their firepower. The mini-con is not required in order to use the evolved weaponry afterwards. This has caused some confusion in the Armada viewing audience due to dub issues and the downplaying of the "Evolution" theme. Despite this, the term is used twice in the American series by Megatron.

Gigantion Mini-cons
The exact origin of the Gigantion mini-cons is debatable due to dubbing issues between Cybertron and Galaxy Force. Both fictions stated that they evolved after the fall of Planet X to handle smaller construction needs once the other Transformers become too big to do it. This would make the mini-cons a second generation, not exactly linked to those from the previous shows.

The Fub Publications fiction seems to have linked these mini-cons to those of Armada, on the other hand, further linking them to Unicron. In Galaxy Force, they are stated to have existed since ancient times and controlled the larger Transformers, althouth this seems incorrect as Planet X fell in the 6th century(about 1400 years ago), hardly making those 'ancient times'. There are even ancient ruins discovered with inscriptions resembling the Micron Legend micron designs. The US dub contains these very same plot tidbits, making no mention of Unicron.

Both Galaxy Force and Cybertron contradict their own plot elements in this way. The only definitive origin offered is that of Fun Publications, which simply has them migrating to Gigantion with the Transformers carrying the Cyber Planet Key to Gigantion. This would also make them creations of Unicron.

Primus is Unicron's sibling, and the creator god of the Transformers. His body is the planet Cybertron. Each Transformers' spark is a small piece of Primus' essence.

In the beginning
Before the dawn of time, Order and Chaos existed within an extradimensional entity known as the One. He created twin astral beings to reign over the cosmos: Primus and Unicron. Their nature differed, as Primus' lifeforce (aka the Allspark) was a multiversal singularity; existing across all Transformers realities at once (See Animated and IDW continuity sections below for possiple exceptions to this), whereas Unicron existed in only one dimension at a time but could travel relatively freely between them. Primus was the Lord of Light and Order, and Unicron, the Lord of Darkness and Chaos. Unicron sought to devour everything that exists and become one with The Void at the end of all things.

In combat, Primus was no match for Unicron. But Primus did manage to trap both his and Unicron's essences inside metallic planetoids. Over time, they learned to shape these prisons. Primus became the mechanical planet of Cybertron. Knowing that his ancient enemy still lived, Primus created the 13 original Transformers from the material of the newly created planet. To the very first of these 13, named Prima, Primus bestowed the Matrix, containing his essence. These Transformers would, in time, grow strong in number, knowledge, and power, and be able to defeat Unicron.

War of the balance
The first conflict between Primus and Unicron occurred shortly after the creation of the first 13 Transformers. One of the original 13, who would ever afterwards be known as The Fallen, betrayed Primus and became an acolyte of Unicron. Many of the first 13 were destroyed in this great battle before Unicron and Primus were sucked into a black hole and sealed away in a extra-dimensional limbo.

The two brothers shared a mental link. So long as Primus hid himself in slumber, so did Unicron also sleep. Their war ended, for a time, in stalemate.

Eventually, in one version of Generation 1 continuity Grimlock, Jazz, and Bumblebee found themselves transported to the center of Cybertron. In a battle with Bludgeon's Pretenders, a laser blast ricocheted off Grimlock and struck the essence of the sleeping Primus, causing a multiverse-shaking Primal Scream that woke Unicron and alerted him to Primus' location.

The battle between Primus and Unicron began anew. Though Unicron would sometimes be defeated, this is always temporary, and there is a whole multiverse of realities to consume. When Unicron is destroyed in one reality, he will respawn in another, ready to eat again. Primus will always be waiting, hoping to incapacitate Unicron and preserve existence.

It has been suggested that both of them are, in fact, necessary for the multiverse to exist in stability.

The evolution of the Primus/Unicron myth
The Primus/Unicron backstory has evolved and been rewritten a good number of times since it first originated in the Marvel Comics. The version above is the current iteration, which has slowly solidified across a wide swath of media beginning around the time of Armada) Before the Primus/Unicron mythos reached its present form it went through several distinct versions in the Marvel G1 Comics and elsewhere.

Unicron's story
The first time we ever heard the Primus/Unicron backstory it in the UK comic continuity, from Unicron himself. After his destruction during the events of The Transformers: The Movie, his head floated through space and crashed on the planet Junk. There, he enslaved the inhabitants to recreate his old body from their world. When the bount-um... freelance peacekeeping agent Death's Head challenged him on the astral plane, Unicron shared the story of his origin thusly:

At the dawn of the universe, when Unicron was a primal force of evil, the only one who could stand against him and his Dark Armies was Primus, Lord of the Light Gods. (Note the plural.) Primus and his fellow Light Gods stood against Unicron and his Dark Armies. Events then played out roughly as described above. (The role of the other Light Gods and Unicron's armies would diminish with each retelling of the story, until the current version where they are alone and have a unique origin. Only one of the other Light Gods was ever named: the Chronarchitect.)

The Keeper's story
The second time the story was told was in the US book by the Keeper, an ancient mechanoid who guarded Primus's head at the center of Cybertron. This telling mentions that their battle was towards the end of the era of Gods and that Primus and Unicron were the last of their respective pantheons. But Primus had to defeat Unicron before he could take his place with the other gods in the "Omniversal Matrix".

Primus' story
The third time the story was told was by Primus when he gathered all his children together to prepare for Unicron's coming. Here we learn for the first time that Unicron predated the current universe. Unicron had destroyed the previous universe and then slept peacefully, alone with the void. But he had not been thorough enough and some bits of the "old realms" survived. They reacted and caused The Big Bang. The sentient core of this new universe recognized the threat of Unicron and so created Primus to be his counterpart
and guardian of the new creation.

DK's story
The first modern retelling of their origin in the DK Transformers: The Ultimate Guide (which tended to focus on the then current Dreamwave continuity) added a new twist with "The One" a self-contained being of balanced Order and Chaos. He was curious and so created Unicron to explore the new-born Universe for him. Then he sub-divided Unicron and created Primus out of him. As Primus achieved consciousness he realized Unicron had become corrupted and was now a force for Chaos. Primus thus took on the role of champion of Order and creation to balance things and protect existence from Unicron.

Marvel Comics continuity
Unicron is first seen in the comic adaptation of The Transformers: The Movie. The Marvel US comic basically left the adaptation alone as something that might or might not happen but was in the distant future (at the time) and so basically out of continuity. The Marvel UK version of the comic however seized on the Movie era and its characters as something it could focus on without worry of contradicting events in the US stories it reprinted.

Target 2006 was the first of these UK exclusive stories. It is not until the later "Legacy of Unicron" storyline however that we first hear of and see Primus.

Of particular note in this continuity is that the story clearly intends for Primus to have died after his battle with Unicron in the US book. Unfortunately the current retcon dissallows that, as Primus must live in all realities or the multiverse collapses. One must assume that Prime was wrong about Primus' status and the god was only "mostly dead", perhaps gone offline as in the Cybertron cartoon untill the Last Autobot somehow revived him. Though that is only speculation there is some evidence in the continuity itself to support Primus not having died after all. The matrix is the life-force of Primus and it is show to still be existing and functioning fine in the G2 comic series that follows his supposed Death.

Animated continuity
Primus did not exist in the Generation 1 cartoon. There, Cybertron's oldest revealed status was as a factory world of the Quintessons who invented the Transformers, and Unicron was a product of the strange sad little alien Primacron.

This causes some trouble with the later retcon that Primus is a "multiversal singularity" and part of all Transformers universes, though Wreckers #3 did attempt to retcon the Primus mythology into the Quintesson-creation backstory of the original cartoon.

Beast Era
Beast Wars/Beast Machines
Primus' name was often invoked in prayer or in righteous anger by the Beast Warriors.

The Covenant of Primus, a prophetical set of data tracks, were on board both the Ark and the Nemesis when they crashed 4 million years ago on prehistoric Earth. Megatron himself took his name from these tracks (as did, presumably, the original Megatron), and the scriptures foretold the events which completed the Beast Wars.

After the Beast Wars, Megatron intended to incorporate Primus' essence, the Allspark, into his own being and become godlike by stealing every Spark of every Transformer on Cybertron. Ultimately, this was merely one step of the Oracle's plan to reformat Cybertron into a technorganic paradise. After Megatron and Optimus Primal were plunged into the planet's core, the planet was reborn and the abducted Sparks were returned to new technorganic bodies.

Tales of the Beast Wars comics
Back at the dawn of the Universe, before he put into effect his grand plan, Primus did a test run to make sure it would work. He transformed a small moon into a planet and there created twelve transforming, robotic beings based on the Zodiac of future Earth. (He was a forward thinking God and had the Chronarchitect on his side.) The Covenant of Primus as they were called, were given the duty of watching over their younger cousins the Transformers, ensuring that Primus' plan followed its intended path, and preparing for the Omega Point, a prophesied final battle with Unicron in which they were to take part.

Universe
When Unicron began gathering Transformers from the multiverse, forcing them to fight, and harvesting the Sparks of the losers, this presented a huge threat to Primus and the Allspark. Transformers' Sparks are pieces of Primus' essence, so each devoured soul weakened him.

Primus and Alpha Trion called back from the Allspark the now-legendary Maximal ship commander and Cybertron's savior, Optimus Primal, to rescue the possessed, battling captives from the Pit of Unicron -- and to lead a team of multiversal warriors to put a stop to his soul-stealing scheme before it could cause the Allspark to collapse.

Primus allowed Optimus Primal to choose any Transformer who ever existed -- living or dead -- for his army. This required considerable amounts of Primus' power, so Primal was told to choose sparingly. Primal chose his departed former troops Rhinox and Depth Charge.

Unicron Trilogy
Energon
Voice actor: Ron Halder (US), Tesshō Genda (Japan)

The creation God of the Transformers made his character debut in the Unicron Trilogy during the Energon series. Although Primus was very vague and kept mysterious in the Energon series, his purpose would be further explored in the Cybertron series.

Primus is the living core of Cybertron and the creator of all Transformers, as well as the originator of the precious and ancient fuel, Energon. After the first era, stories of Unicron, Primus, and Omega Supreme were regarded as myth and legend, until after the Unicron Battles of 2010. With Cybertron left in a disastrous state, it would require large amounts of Energon to repair it fully. Involved in this task was the Earth Federated Government, operating secretly with the Cybertronians. A child of one of the Earth scientists, Kicker Jones, would be the one to awaken the ancient God, Primus, within Cybertron's core, while fleeing Optimus Prime in fear.

Primus' first act was to empower this child with the gift of finding energon throughout the universe. Primus would also create the sparks of combination which would allow his Autobots to double in strength by having one Autobot link to another, diverting his energy supply into his partner's weapons and processing systems through a system of Powerlinking top to bottom, much like Optimus and Jetfire's combination from Transformers Armada.

Primus would go on to advise Optimus Prime on his actions in order to prepare for the future, including the Terrorcon invasion, the return of Megatron, and the next battle with Unicron. Although vague at times, Primus often offered enough information in order for his children to avoid destruction in battle. Primus was often very weak due to the damage done to the planet's surface, and spent most of his time in a mode of stasis to preserve his energy and keep Cybertron's energy grid online.

Primus would continue to advise his creations until Unicron, being controlled by Megatron, would once again menace Cybertron and the other planets in the Planet Q system. Most of the Autobot army were critically wounded, prompting the sleeping Primus to awaken and fuse their armor. Unicron was eventually defeated, but Megatron survived. After Megatron used the hidden super energon pool to upgrade himself into Galvatron, all seemed nearly lost until Galvatron was once again possessed by Unicron. In the final battle, Primus awoke to carry the super energon through space and collide it with Unicron's spark, creating a newborn sun, ending the Energon story. Unfortunately, this would not last, as the sun would soon collapse, leading to the black hole that threatens the universe in the Transformers Cybertron series.

It is unknown if the act of creating the sun in the Energon series completely exhausted Primus, as the fiction connecting the stories remains vague. The club comic seems to portray the idea that Primus continued to exist, but was offlined by Nemesis Prime's attack. Although this is a plausible idea, the structure of Primus and Cybertron, having an Alpha Trion and Vector Sigma is based on Generation One, and was not present in the previous Energon animated series.

Super-Link production notes explain that Primus is the first celestial body created by The Source, the primortial essense of energon. This body split into the Dark God and Light God, during the big bang. Energon was spread to the countless planets in the universe, all considered a sign of Primus. Primus contains the genetics of solar energy, and in extension, energon itself.
It seems by the end of Super-Link itself, Primus forcefully merged his spark with that of Unicron once again, creating a solitary celestial body. Takara's new timeline depicts an event where this union broke down once again due to Master Megatron's absorption of Unicron's spark from within.

Cybertron
Voice actor: ? (US), Tesshō Genda (Japan)

Primus' plot to bury Unicron's essence in the center of a newborn star failed. The star collapsed into a black hole which threatened not only Cybertron and the universe, but the multiverse as well. Only four Cyber Planet Keys, hidden on planets throughout the galaxy, combined with the Omega Lock, could awaken Primus and allow him to destroy the black hole.

After Megatron is seemingly defeated, the Autobots bring the Omega Lock along with the Cyber Planet Keys from Velocitron the Jungle Planet and Earth to the restoration chamber. Upon inserting the three keys into the Omega Lock, the room shakes and the Omega Lock is pushed from its receptical into the ceiling, causing a chain reaction that makes it look as though the planet itself is falling apart. As the Autobots evacuated, they began to realize what was occurring - Cybertron was transforming.

As the massive continental plates of Cybertron split and shifted, exposing an arsenal of weapons, as well as recognisably humanoid robotic appendages, Vector Prime intoned an almost-religious verse: "He who fought Unicron at the dawn of Time. He who created the Matrix of Leadership. He who brought life to Cybertron, Velocitron and all the other Transformer worlds in the cosmos. Yes, there can be no other. This, is Primus." Cybertron (Cybertron episode)

Primus communicates directly through the Mini-Con Jolt, telling the Autobots that the black hole is no ordinary singularity. Primus gives the assembled an image of two forces, one good, one evil, that have been in existance for all time, but the evil force has vanished. Primus says that the destruction of Unicron left the balance of good and evil severely unbalanced, whch distorted space and time, and formed the black hole. Vector Prime explains to the kids that Unicron and Primus are balancing forces, and one cannot exist without the other, which Coby illustrates to Bud with a coin.

Primus says that only he can close the black hole, but his spark must be fully restored first, by obtaining all four Cyber Planet Keys and puttng them in the Omega Lock.... but the Autobots only have three Keys so far.

After Primus reveals the location of the fourth Planet Key, an Allspark-fueled Starscream attacks Primus, intent on retrieving the Omega Lock. Primus manages to defend himself and easily defeat Starscream. Balance

Fun Publications Cybertron comic
During the events of Transformers: Cybertron, the black hole created by Unicron's passing posed unique problems. Primus and Unicron -- representing Order and Chaos, respectively -- together forged a delicate balance in the multiverse. With one or the other missing, the balance would be upset, spiraling all that exists into an unknown doom.

In addition, the black hole was positioned very close to Cybertron itself, making Primus, despite Unicron's apparent demise, the most vulnerable he had ever been. Cybertron was the linchpin, the astral center of the entire multiverse, itself another singularity. Unicron's heralds Ramjet and Nemesis Prime arrived on Cybertron to unleash the Dead Matrix on Primus' essence. For the first time ever, Unicron, who is normally limited to threatening Primus one reality at a time, would be able to weaken Primus across all timelines -- and the black hole's proximity would end their cosmic feud forever.

IDW Continuity
Simon Furman has also stated that he may specifically exclude Primus and Unicron from the IDW comic universe as well, which might be seen as retconning out the previous retcon and rendering Primus as being once again a feature of only "some" Transformer continuities.
Generation 1
*Primus (2004)
:The first Primus figure was a "Lucky Draw" toy in Japan, a recolored metallic Rodimus Prime that was given away as a contest prize from a collector book.

Cybertron
*Cybertron Primus (Supreme, 2006)
: Japanese ID number: C-00

:Cybertron Primus is the first toy representation of Transformers' Creator as their home planet of Cybertron. In planet mode, he is considerably more detailed than Unicron from the Armada line, with visible cities, including Iacon based upon its appearance in the DK Books Transformers Ultimate Guide, and Kaon as seen in The War Within. On the 'bottom' of the planet mode there are four hard rubber legs, molded to be shaped like towers, allowing Primus to be displayed in planet mode, yet not require a flat base as Unicron did.

:Primus's transformation is unusual, in many ways similar to a Powermaster, in that he requires the owner to insert his accompanying Omega Lock accessory into several special ports around the planet, then manipulate them to unlock his parts and transform him. When the Omega Lock is initially inserted and pushed, a transforming sound is heard. When it is inserted into his chest and pushed up to reveal his head, his eyes glow red and a laser-type sound effect is heard.

:In robot mode, Primus resembles both the Beast Wars Neo Unicron prototype as well as Don Figueroa's Primus concept. He is bristling with weaponry, including two shoulder-mounted cannons that can fire missiles, two forearm blasters that raise and extend when a Cyber Planet Key is inserted, and several banks of gattling cannons, lasers and missile launchers in his shins and legs revealed by the Omega Lock.

:Primus comes with two accessories, a battery operated Omega Lock that lights up red when inserted into any of the four Omega Lock ports, and a special silver Cybertron-Planet Cyber Planet Key.

:In North America, limited early-run versions of Cybertron Primus came packaged with a "battle damaged" Unicron head.

:A later version, exclusive to Wal-Mart as a Black Friday 2006 special, included four Mini-Cons; Strongarm, Knockdown, Nightscream, and Offshoot.
Primus' gift to Kicker was an unusual ability to detect energon, manifesting itself as an eerie glowing of his hair, and this power was exploited by his father. Dr. Jones dragged the young Kicker from planet to planet, wherever they expected to find energon. Over time, due to his experiences on Cybertron, this mysterious power, as well as his father's often casual indifference to his son's well-being and wishes, led Kicker to greatly resent his father and the Transformers.
Kicker is regarded as a new legend by the Transformers on Cybertron, having located over a dozen energon points himself, resulting in the various Cybertron Cities throughout the solar system.
Soon after the end of the Unicron Battles, Optimus Prime returned to Cybertron to lead the new Autobot-Decepticon alliance. With it came contact and diplomatic ties to Earth's governments, after Rad secretly invited the Jones family to Cybertron.
The Autobots transported them aboard their flagship, the Axalon, and among the occupants were their friends Rad White, Carlos Lopez and Alexis, as well as Dr. Brian Jones, humanity's foremost expert on the newly discovered ore, energon. While his father was busy, Kicker ran away, hiding in a long-ruined part of Cybertron. This led Optimus Prime to search for him, warning that the areas was strictly off-limits.

While trying to escape the Autobot leader, Kicker accidentally fell down a long shaft and was suddenly saved by a mysterious glowing entity who later revealed himself to be Primus. Primus was fascinated by the human child, and declared that he would unleash Kicker's full potential. Having sensed the 'scene of the sun' on Kicker, Primus jumpstarted an evolutionary trait and Kicker was imbued with the essense of energon.Cybertron City

Energon is the preferred fuel / energy source of Transformers. It has also been shown as food, currency and sometimes even ammunition.

Typically, energon is highly explosive. Even a small impact can cause energon to detonate fiercely.

In most continuities, the safest way to transport Energon is when it is condensed into the form of an energon cube. In this form energon is more stable, but still quite dangerous.

Generation 1
In the Generation 1 animated series, energon is at first the specific power source of choice of the Decepticons exclusively, with the Autobots never using the material in their recorded adventures in the late 20th Century. By 2005, however - by choice or necessity - the Autobots had adopted energon as their fuel also. Energon has also been used as currency, mostly by entities that do not use it as sustenance, on the gambling asteroid of Monacus.

Energon is "refined" or created out of other energy sources, sometimes through machinery, but most often simply by attaching an empty energon cube, or placing one next to, the energy source which will be converted. The cube then goes to work automatically, converting the power source into liquid energon which fills the cube. Liquid energon is a glowing pink in color, but should energon cubes be compressed, it takes on an irridescent rainbow effect.

Energy sources refined into energon have included electricity, magma, oil and steam, pillaged from Earth by the Decepticons a regular basis. When the Autobots began using energon, on the other hand, they set up Autobot City to harmlessly harness Earth's many renewable resources and acquire the energy that way. The level of power any energon possesses appears to be related to the original base material from which it was converted - the especially pure oil of Carbombya, for example, yielded a particularly potent "super-energon" that created an instantly perceptible increase in vigour and strength in those who consumed it.

Generation 1: Blackthorne 3D
The first issue of Blackthorne's Transformers in 3D comics featured an unusually specific discussion of energon, although it is outside of mainline continuity, and this information has not been re-used in other canonical sources.

According to Blackthorne, "pure energon" consists of several molecules (perhaps in the form of a macromolecule), one of which contains an element actually named "energon", which cannot be synthesized. The whole macromolecule is often refered to simply as energon.

The element energon is required for the creation of "pure" energon. This implies that an "impure" energon may exist that can be manufactured without the element energon, but is still referred to as energon because of its similar physical properties.

IDW Comics Continuity
Energon is at the heart of the revised continuity introduced in Infiltration and Stormbringer arcs. The Transformers apparently stripped Cybertron of its resources (including Energon) during the Autobot-Decepticon War, precipitating the cataclysm that rendered the planet sterile. Thus, the Transformers are spread across the galaxy, seeking new or synthetic sources of fuel - Starscream mentions "artificial Energon derivatives" and "scrabbling for micro-ergs of some foul local brew".

The extent of Autobot energy-harvesting operations is as yet unknown, but it is clear that the Decepticons infiltrate and destabilise established societies with developed technology (presumably because local technology makes Energon harvesting quicker and easier) before stripping the infiltrated planets bare. The Autobots typically work to counter Decepticon infiltration units, possibly to deny the Decepticons new sources of energy as much as to protect the unwitting peoples of each planet from Decepticon pillaging.

An offhanded comment made by Ratchet indicates that one method for consuming Energon is the use of a delivery capsule. Presumably, this is the large, coffin-like device used by Starscream in the first two pages of Infiltration #6.

The discovery on Earth of Ore-13, an ore that can be purified into a unique and highly powerful form of Energon, threatens to throw humanity's home straight into the middle of the conflict as both Autobots and Decepticons vie for control of it. Unknown to either faction, Ore-13 was actually created by the Decepticon Shockwave, who seeded Earth with the substance millions of years ago as part of a project he called Regenesis.

Back on Cybertron, another form of Energon has been discovered by both an Autobot science team led by Jetfire and a Decepticon group led by Bludgeon; the latter group has used this "Ultra Energon" to resurrect the avatar of the Cybertronian apocalypse, the Decepticon Thunderwing, in a plot to restore Cybertron to its former glory. Given that Bludgeon had uncovered Shockwave's Regenesis project, Ultra-Energon and Ore-13 may be the same substance.

Beast Era
As the Blackthorne comics had done before them, the Beast Wars animated series treated energon as an element in its own right, rather than a refined product of other energies. The Beast Wars handling of energon was centered around the concept of the element existing in a naturally-occurring raw state as unstable crystals which generated powerful radiation. With extended exposure, this radiation threatened to overload the circuits of a normal Transformer, but could not penetrate through organic layers. When Optimus Primal and Megatron's crews arrived on prehistoric Earth and discovered the planet to be rich in raw energon, they adopted organic-skinned beast modes for the express purpose of shielding them from the radiation.

Although all appearances indicate that energon crystals can be naturally occurring, it was later revealed that the crystals on Earth has been seeded on the planet by the mysterious aliens known as the Vok, apparently as part of their back-up plan to sterilize Earth should the experiment they were conducting on it be disrupted some how. The Beast Wars qualified as such a disruption, and using their Planet Buster weapon, the Vok detonated the vast majority of Earth's energon with a massive energy beam. The Planet Buster was destroyed by Optimus Primal, and much of the energon not destroyed was converted into a stable state in the form of solid cubes, also known as "energon cubes."

To bring the Beast Era's portrayal of energon into line with G1's, further writings by parties such as Dreamwave have presented crystalline energon as the natural state of the mineral, which can then be manually processed to create the safer, more usable liquid energon of G1.

Energon
In the Energon series, energon is presented differently. According to the series' production notes, Energon is formed "as the planets came into contact with solar winds" and create "solar energy crystals from the sun's genetic material,". It is suggested that The Source who created Primus and Unicron was Energon itself, sort of a primortial entity. Once the big bang occurred, Energon manifested in the form of various planets and the like. Energon is the key and origin of life and continuously evolves new lifeforms. It is this reason that it is found everywhere in this universe. In this form, it functions much like solar photons. It is said that all life spawns from the 'genetics of solar energy', which is also the essense of Primus. Primus is also known as the Light God, in reference to his status connecting him to Energon. Energon signifies the presense of Primus.

The sub-factions known as Omnicons and Terrorcons have the unique ability to refine energon and to shape Energon weapons and power-enhancing Energon Chips (also called Energon Stars). Omnicon-refined energon is red, while Terrorcon produced energon stars are a more yellowish-green. Terrorcon-produced Energon reacts badly when most Transformers even touch it, sending the one who grabbed it into system shock. However, it appears that those whose superstructures are in some manner Unicron-fashioned (like the Terrorcons) are immune to its negative effects. As such, it's possible these Transformers would have the same negative reaction to an Omnicon-forged Energon Star.

There is also evidence that refined Energon can come in a variety of other colors, including purple, black, and more metallic tones. What other effects these other Energon colors have is undetermined at this time.

There also exist other types of energon: green energon, a corrupted form of the substance that flows through the body of Unicron; and blue "super energon", which exists in a pool inside an ancient temple far below the surface of Cybertron.

Dr. Brian Jones is humanity's foremost expert on Energon. He has a brilliant mind and his research may solve the energy crisis facing not only Earth, but Cybertron as well.

Dr. Jones and his wife, Miranda Jones, are the parents of Chad (aka "Kicker") and Sally Jones. He laughs at inappropriate times. Actually, he has some other inappropriate personal quirks to boot. He sometimes views Kicker as more of a tool than as his son, but shows some concern for him at important times. Dr. Jones is exceedingly eccentric.

An MIT graduate, Dr. Jones earned a degree in phsyical engineering. His pupil at this time was the young Rad, who would later reveal the Transformers to Dr. Jones. Dr. Jones would eventually travel to Cybertron and establish a sort of private sector Energon research on Earth, in the form of hidden cities built on Cybertron technology.

Thanks to Alexis' intervention, this program would become loosely sanctioned by the Earth Federation, intersted in exploring Energon's usefulness to humanity, but cautious to assimilate the Transformers into human affairs. This program would be kept from the public for several years before being abandoned during the Terrorcon invasion. Afterwards, sightings of Transformers would become urban legend.

Dr. Jones has rather ambiguous morals with regards to how he treats his son Kicker, who resents him. At times, Jones treated Kicker more like a tool, innocently oblivious to Kicker's developmental needs.

When Dr. Jones discovered Kicker's gift, he dragged his young son from world to world, wherever he expected to find energon deposits. Coupled with his traumatic trip to Cybertron, Kicker came to resent his father, though the elder Jones did upon occassion show concern and love for his son.

Dr. Jones later developed the Energon Tower, a series of defensive spires feeding off energon deposits on Earth, that can generate a powerful, all-encompassing Energon field grid, one that can destroy Terrorcon drones and severely damage Decepticons. A variant of this defensive weapon was later installed aboard his pride and joy, the Miranda II.

Unfortunately, his invention was later perverted to use by the Decepticons when they managed to capture Cybertron, and refitted the towers defending the planet to output toxic Energon gas that was highly damaging to Autobots and Autobot technology. This served as the Decepticon's main defense for much of the war.
Dr. Jones was a special consultant for Alterenergy, an alternative fuel company located in Western Australia. When Terrorcons raided Earth in search of Energon, they targeted his son Kicker, who could detect Energon with his mind. He sent one of his employees, Rad, to rescue him.

However, Kicker was instead scooped up by one of the protesters outside the Alterenergy mobile command center. Rad then fumbled the rescue and Kicker was kidnapped by the Terrorcons. After the Autobots arrived, Dr. Jones had them bring Kicker a battle suit to wear so that he would be protected.
Inferno's main appearance was when Thrust first selected him out of a group of other Mini-cons to be his personal partner. However, Thrust was already invisible before Inferno joined him (in fact, Inferno also vanished after coming within a few feet of Thrust). This contradicts his tech specs, which state that powerlinking with Inferno is what causes Thrust to go into stealth mode.
Powerlinking with a mini-con evolves their physical weapons, hence the term "evolution" used a few times in the US and constantly in Japan. Blurr managed to pawn him off on Hot Shot, and the two went out for a little training.

Unfortunately, at the same time, Hot Shot's former protogee Wheeljack arrived on Earth, intent on doing horrible things to Hot Shot. Side Swipe crossed paths with Wheeljack, immediately lept to his new awesome commander's defense, and failed. He later tried this again, only this time Wheeljack captured him and chained him up somewhere in an abandoned oil refinery. The battle between Hot Shot and Wheeljack set the place ablaze, re-setting the scene where Wheeljack though Hot Shot left him to die back on Cybertron centuries ago. Side Swipe blubbered a lot, thinking he was gonna die, but Hot Shot saved him. Back at the base, Side Swipe tried to give his commander a great big hug for saving his life.
Side Swipe is a green Autobot. He's willing and eager, and also kinda dumb. He doesn't think before he leaps, gets really emotionally attached to commanders right away, and basically just messes things up. Optimus thinks that somewhere in there is the makings of a fine future soldier. Where?!

Voice actor: Samuel Vincent (US), Nobuyuki Kobushi (Japan)

Having once been saved from a hanging rope trap by Blurr's marksmanship on Cybertron, he immediately traveled to Earth to join him upon finding out where he had gone.

Despite his childish nature, Side Swipe is apparently a capable codebreaker and does manage to make himself useful on a few occasions by deciphering Decepticon data.
: Side Swipe transforms into a blue Nissan Skyline sedan. He is packaged with Mini-Con Nightbeat, who can store in a flip-out section of the back end of Side Swipe's vehicle mode. Pressing down on the sigil plate in vehicle mode swings his car hood halves forward in a spring-loaded attack (or "dragster mode"). These hood parts end up on his arms in robot mode, giving him a spring-loaded attack in that mode. Attaching Nightbeat (or any other Mini-Con mold) to the Powerlinx plug on his back activates a "punching" action gimmick in his left arm.

A former Autobot, Wheeljack wears the scarred insignia as a constant reminder of what he left. He believes the supposedly-noble Autobots left him on the field of battle to die (and he's not entirely wrong about that, either), and particularly blames his former friend Hot Shot (that, now, he's got dead wrong). He's a fierce soldier with a lot of tricks up his sleeve.

Wheeljack was once an Autobot in the same military unit as Hot Shot, looking up to his peer due to his own inexperience in battle, and they considered each other good friends. However, that friendship was broken one day when Wheeljack was trapped under rubble in the middle of an intense fire. Hot Shot alone could not lift the wreckage, and left to get some help, promising to return, but he never did. An arrogant Autobot officer forbade Hot Shot from returning, claiming the fire was too intense and they couldn't risk more lives.

Meanwhile, Wheeljack saw a figure approaching through the flames, thinking that at last, Hot Shot had returned. But it was Megatron who saved him that day, and in return, Wheeljack became a Decepticon. Past Part 1

:(Note: Wheeljack claims to have put the past behind him, and that he isn't here for revenge, but at the same time, he constantly thinks about the incident and has definitely returned for revenge. This is possibly due to bad translation or bad writing of the source script. It's also possible, however, that this inconsistency is caused entirely by Wheeljack's own skewed perceptions.)

: Armada Wheeljack transforms into a gullwing-doored supercar of vague origin. He is cast in dark charcoal plastic in vehicle mode, with white and yellow for robot parts. His most distinctive feature is the large, scarred Autobot symbol on the center of his chest. When his Mini-Con Wind Sheer is attached to his active rooftop Powerlinx port, both doors either side of the vehicle mode open up like wings, which also give access to the triggers for his door-mounted missile launchers. In robot mode, these missiles can be held in his hands as melee weapons. Unusually, his right wrist features a swivel joint while his left wrist is immobile.

: The Takara release of Wheeljack, named Rampage, has some major colour differences. His predominant vehicle mode plastic is now solid black, with the large yellow paint striping replaced with much smaller light blue stripes, and his eyes are painted blue, matching his cartoon model.

:This mold was also used to make a proposed Universe Battle in a Box Deluge/Drench, but the toy was never released.

Trivia
* According to Aaron Archer, the final head design for Armada Wheeljack is unintentional, at least to Hasbro. Unbeknownst to the American toy company, Takara had designed and sculpted the head to resemble Generation 1 Sideswipe, no doubt due to the similarity of the robot modes on both toys, and Hasbro's team were surprised when they received the prototype toy from Japan.

* Also according to Aaron Archer, during his ORSON stint, it seems some other things about the final sculpt were unknown to the Hasbro team.
**When a fan asked about Wheeljack having only one articulated wrist, Archer did not know why this was done.
**When asked about Wheeljack having knees whilst most other Armada figures seemed to lack them, the reply was "Wheeljack has knees?"

* At OTFCC 2003, Hasbro had noted they had vague plans to release the Takara version of Wheeljack as a running change. This never materialized, however.

* Out of the Armada Decepticons who came to Earth in the animated continuity and were not shown to be killed off, Wheeljack is the only one who did not reappear in Energon. As a result, his eventual fate is unknown.

* The original plans for Wheeljack was for him to be Hot Shot's brother. Even after the episode aired, Aaron Archer, posting as Orson, was unaware of this change.

Fiction
Energon animated series
Cliffjumper was one of the rookie soldiers serving under Bulkhead who were sent into the rift to locate Team Prime. He is close to his friend Downshift, and both have alot to learn from Bulkhead. Cliffjumper's better moments took place in the unaired episode "Scorponok's Scars", where he held off quite a few Terrorcons on Desert Planet/Planet Q reborn while Ironhide chased Scorponok. He also had another shining moment when he attempted to land the failing Miranda 2 on Cybertron's surface in order to ensure Kicker's safe descent.

Sort of the token ethnic character in the show, Cliffjumper was much more slang-driven in the Japanese show, constantly quirking "Check it out, yo!"

Due to dub errors, he is often confused with Downshift.

(Note: Cliffjumper's "power-up" coloration is based on his US-only redeco, Beachcomber.)

Dreamwave Energon comic
Cliffjumper was part of the Cybertron force sent to Earth to combat the Terrorcon hordes sent by Alpha Quintesson. He was assigned to Los Angeles, California, under the command of Jetfire to battle the infestation of Insecticon clones.

: Cliffjumper transforms into a large Baja-style buggy with electronic sounds and hood-mounted twin missile launchers. It can also transform into the top half or bottom half of a larger robot, able to combine with most other Deluxe and Mega-sized Autobots. The Takara release of Cliffjumper has similar, but more primary, higher-contrast coloration.

: As with most of the larger japanese releases of Energon/Superlink toys, his electronics were removed by Takara.

: This mold was also used to make Energon Beachcomber.

Trivia
* As referenced above, the Energon cartoon constantly switched Cliffjumper and Downshift's names around. More often, the yellow-and-green robot would end up being called Downshift, in defiance of the toy names. It also seemed as if the two characters randomly switched voice actors from episode to episode.
Optimus Prime paired Ironhide with Kicker, in the hopes that the two would help to keep one another under control. Neither was very happy with the partnership at first, but eventually they became good friends.

Ironhide did manage to earn a Combination Spark after several battles, making him able to Powerlink with Jetfire and later, Cliffjumper. Along with several other characters, Ironhide was reformatted into a new paint job to fight Unicron.

Ironhide went through several character growths due to the changes taking place in Scorponok, whom he looked up to initially. He would eventually lead a rookie team to their deaths against Scorponok, and nearly kill Scorponok in retaliation. In the end, he and Scorponok fought eachother into a stasis. His life was saved when Scorponok carried his damaged body to Optimus Prime on Jungle Planet, in order to merge Ironhide's spark with Optimus Prime. He was restored to life afterwards and was last seen with Kicker on Ocean Planet.

Ironhide transforms into a dorky blue sports utility vehicle with a rather oversized red speaker/gun turret/high beam lights/thingamajig setup mounted on top. In robot mode he is able to combine with most Autobot Deluxe and Mega sizeclass toys.

The japanese release, named Roadbuster, had some minor deco and colour differences, most signifcantly being the tan plastic parts being replace by grey, even though they remained tan in the Energon cartoon. The major functional difference between the two toys is that the japanese version does not have electronics, while the US release does.

Ironhide became a major shelfwarmer during the Energon toyline's run, with some areas still having unsold Ironhides into 2006.
When Megatron got his ass beat down bad by Metroplex, Nemesis Breaker disappeared, presumably into a plot hole, though it's curious that whatever happened to him didn't have any effect on Crumplezone, who had recently been brought back from death's door as Dark Crumplezone by the use of the same mystery doodah that Megatron made Nemesis Breaker out of.
