:Rhinox is a Maximal (and occasionally a Predacon or Vehicon) in the Beast Era portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

Cheetor was on the mark when he said that Rhinox was the best of them. He is a Renaissance Bot. Intelligent, massive, strong, and stalwart, there are few Maximals one could depend on more. Rhinox is of a rare breed -- he's incredibly tech savvy, but mystically-inclined... without coming off as a burnt-out technohippie. He's quick and decisive in a crisis, with spectacular results, but is slow and steady. He loves to sniff the flowers. He loves to fart. A behind-the-scenes charismatic and an on-his-feet strategist, he could lead the Maximals if he wanted to, but he doesn't.

If he sounds too good to be true, it's because he just might be. At times he can be borderline obsessive and single-minded. The Maximals are glad he's on their side, because if he ever had a change of heart, woe be to them. No, woe be to the galaxy.

Still, you can't help but love a bot who can fight Megatron to a standstill without breaking a sweat yet would rather take a nap in a patch of daisies. Rhinox considers Rattrap to be his best friend, though he also has a close friendship with Optimus Primal. He appears to have some "older sibling/parental" emotions toward Airazor due to his role in bringing her online.

Rhinox's only weapons - besides his rather intimidating strength - are his twin chainguns, affectionately named "Chainguns of Doom." Also, Rhinox is Death.

Rhinox's core was an integral part of the evil Vehicon General Tankor.

Rhinox was a crewmember of the exploration ship Axalon when captain Optimus Primal got word that the Predacon criminal Megatron had stolen the Golden Disk and a ship with transwarp capabilities. The Axalon was the closest vessel that also possessed a transwarp drive, so Rhinox's ship was sent to engage them. After following the Predacons through a transwarp portal and appearing above a mysterious planet, both ships were damaged in the ensuing space battle, and before both ships crashed into the planet's surface below, the stasis pods carrying the rest of Rhinox's crew were ejected into orbit.

The planet was rich with energon -- so much so that prolonged exposure would short out their bodies, so the Maximals and Predacons were forced to take organic forms from the local creatures. Rhinox took the form of a rhinoceros.

When Optimus Primal was dematerialized and absorbed by a mysterious alien probe, Rhinox was forced to juryrig a gizmo to extract Optimus' molecular structure from the probe and reconstruct it. Whether or not this device would actually have worked is unknown, as shortly before he had a chance to use it, Rhinox blasted Waspinator with his chainguns (beginning the running gag of Waspinator being scrapped in every episode), and the wounded Predacon somehow accidentally triggered the Standing Stones construct, which then rematerialized Optimus on its own.

Rhinox later developed Sentinel, a hi-tech security system for the Axalon, which unfortunately went berserk when its control panel was damaged in a struggle between Dinobot and Rattrap. Rattrap however, was able to infiltrate the now-heavily guarded ship and deactivate Sentinel, which was then repaired and made fully-functional by Rhinox.A Better Mousetrap

Sometime later, when the Maximals found themselves cornered by a Predacon ambush, Rhinox was able to take out their attackers with a carefully aimed spray of chaingun fire. Megatron was so impressed that he decided to make Rhinox a member of his merry band of thieves, by force. Rhinox was captured by Tarantulas and then reprogrammed into a Predacon by a device designed by Megatron called a "Transmuter". However, the newly malevolent Rhinox proved to be too much for Megatron to handle, as Optimus Primal had correctly predicted. He quickly dispatched most of the Predacons, working his way up to Megs himself in an attempted coup. Rhinox very nearly succeeded, but fortunately, Megatron was able to revert him back into a Maximal using the Transmuter, and Rhinox escaped to rejoin his Maximal comrades and smell some flowers.

Later, a stasis pod crash landed in a barren wasteland. Rhinox intercepted it and, with Cheetor's help, managed to save the protoform Maximal's spark. The protoform then became Airazor, who repaid the favor by saving the weakened Rhinox from Terrorsaur.

When Scorponok tested an experimental bomb on a group of Maximals, rendering them blind, it was Rhinox who led the group on the dangerous trek back to the Axalon, teaching them how to use their other senses. Of course, they succeeded, and afterwards, Rhinox again went off to smell some flowers.

Later, Tarantulas infected Rhinox with an energon discharge virus, which made him expel his energon reserves via his nasal passages in bursts powerful enough to tear through the hull of the Axalon, threatening both to destroy the Maximals' base and completely drain Rhinox of energy. Rattrap and Dinobot were dispatched to acquire a countervirus, while Rhinox ate some wild bean vines to keep his strength up. When the bickering duo nearly failed in their mission, the other Maximals, including Rhinox, showed up, and the rhinoceros blew away the Predacons with a massive energon... *ahem* "derriere-based"... discharge which was caused by his ingestion of wild beans. Megatron would remember this moment as the most humiliating defeat in his entire career. Rhinox was later cured by the countervirus via a Cybertronic beer hat.

During the Planet Buster crisis, Rhinox was heavily damaged by Tarantulas and Blackarachnia when they infiltrated the Axalon, forcing him to spend the remainder of the crisis in a CR chamber, thereby preventing him from being upgrade into a Transmetal by the quantum surge. Once Rhinox was fully repaired, he initiated a dangerous plan to bring the recently-deceased Optimus Primal back to life by using the hole in space-time caused by the destruction of the Planet Buster to astrally project his spark into the Matrix, where he followed the transion left by Primal's spark and led it back to the land of the living, where it was reborn as Transmetal Optimus Primal.

When Blackarachnia's attempts to become a Transmetal caused her shell program to deteriorate, threatening to erase her core consciousness, Rhinox carried out a very delicate procedure to surgically remove the shell program directly. Unfortunately, certain failsafes installed by Tarantulas, combined with a Predacon attack, caused the operation to fail. Fortunately, Blackarachnia was mysteriously resurrected anyway by the Transmetal driver.

After Megatron raised the Nemesis, Rhinox was ordered by Optimus Primal to execute Operation: Eternity, which apparently only Primal and he knew about. The purpose of the operation was to "move the Ark" by activating its engines and taking off; little is know beyond that, because the Maximals failed when the Ark's engines proved beyond repair. However, Dinobot 2 downloaded emergency data to the Ark about an Autobot shuttle hidden within the Ark. Rhinox piloted the shuttle and flew it directly into the bridge of the Nemesis, taking down Megatron and causing the warship to spiral out of control and crash somewhere beyond the horizon. Thus, the Beast Wars were won. Rhinox and the other Maximals left prehistoric Earth aboard the aforementioned Autobot shuttle and began the voyage home to Cybertron.

Rhinox stood outside the Ark as Razorbeast's chronally dispaced Maximals passed by. Although Optimus Primal could vaguely sense their presence, Rhinox theorized that the sensation was just a side-effect of Primal's recent upgrades.
Tankor (BM)

Rhinox returned to Cybertron with the surviving Maximals to discover the entire population had been replaced by mindless Vehicon drones created by Megatron. Rhinox and Silverbolt were captured, stripped of their organic bodies and placed in the new bodies of Tankor and Jetstorm. Rhinox's mind was freed by Optimus' spark connection with him, and he watched and observed, eventually turning his back on his Maximals to conquer Cybertron as its new ruler. Rhinox used the Key to Vector Sigma to try and destroy the Maximals and Megatron, but his plan failed due to Optimus' use of the Plasma Energy Chamber and sadly died. Rhinox's spiritual form appeared once more with Optimus in the Matrix, bidding his friend farewell and to telling him to embrace his Spark.

When Primus gives Optimus Primal the ability to choose any Transformer, living or dead, from the Allspark to assist him in the war against Unicron, Primal chooses Depthcharge and Rhinox. Depthcharge is bitter about being brought back from the dead, but Rhinox is thankful for the chance to atone for his actions as Tankor.
After Tankor's death, Rhinox' spark and consciousness were cleansed and rejoined the Matrix. When Megatron was defeated by Nightscream, Rhinox saw an opportunity to redeem the fallen tyrant, and attempted to act as a spirit guide. Rhinox led Megatron through the ascending layers of Transformer afterlife (which is actually a tree!), urging him to leave behind his fixation on worldly power. Megatron was briefly tempted, but his repeated returns to Cybertron (in Spark of Darkness) convinced him that godhood was still within his reach. Tapping into the power of the Oracle, Megatron erases Rhinox' spark, killing him utterly.
: Japanese ID number: C-7

: Rhinox transforms into a tan rhinoceros. In robot mode, his primary weapon is a spinning blade-gun/double mace-thing/lawn edge trimmer, though the television series liberally interpreted this weapon as a sort of gatling gun (the aforementioned "Chaingun of Doom"). His tail also detaches to become a blade.

: The two panels mounted on either side of his head close together to form his 'mutant' battle mask.

: The Takara release of Rhinox added a thick layer of gray paint to the beast-mode parts that faded to reveal the original tan towards the lower body. Why is uncertain, as this made him even less like his show coloration.

: For the Transmetals line of Beast Wars toys, Rhinox now transforms into a robotic rhinoceros. The rhino mode has fold-down skis in the front legs, and tank treads in the rear legs so he can become a kind of snow mobile. In robot mode, he loses his projectile weapon, armed with only his blade, now formed out of his beast mode horn.

: In the Hasbro line, early releases of the toy had a much paler aqua-colored chrome than later versions. Such chrome differences were seemingly common among the Transmetals, but the pale/rich-chrome Rhinoxes seem to be the most common and most likely intentional change.

: The Takara release of Transmetal Rhinox has gold chrome instead of the aqua-blue, and replaces the "RHINOX" tampograph with "CYBERTRON" and the Maximal faction sigil.

: This mold was used to make Armada Rhinox.

: Available only as part of a Hasbro-brand-names fast food promotion (which included miniature versions of other Hasbro properties like Mr. Potato Head), and labeled simply as "Beast Wars", this toy is an extremely simplified version of the Transmetal Rhinox toy, available only at participating Rally's and Checkers resturants.

: Despite it being... well, look at it... it goes for mad money on the secondary market. Most people didn't realize the promotion even existed until after it was over, and the resturant chain seems to be small and somewhat regional.

* Rhinox (Deluxe, 1999)

: Part of the first wave of "Fox Kids" redecoes , and exclusive to Toys "R" Us stores, this toy uses the original Rhinox mold in off-white and dark burgundy. Hasbro documents listed this toy as "Energon Surge Rhinox", a name that never made it to the final package.

* Rhinox (Deluxe Transmetal, 2000)

: Part of the last year of mass-retail Beast Wars product (sold concurrently with the early releases of Beast Machines), the Transmetal mold also got a "Fox Kids" redeco in mainly blue and gray... an interesting color choice, given that it's the show-colors of Tankor, who Rhinox would become. His chrome color was a pale green.
: For the 10th Anniversary of Beast Wars, Hasbro redecoed the original 1996 Rhinox toy in more show-accurate colours, giving him a darker beast mode colour scheme, and painted gold details on his robot mode head, to more closely match the CGI model. They also tampographed a Maximal sigil on his beast mode's right foreleg.

Before the war, High Circuitmaster Boltax began storing the accumulated knowledge of the Transformer race in a database called the Underbase. He remained a neutral when the wars between the Autobots and Decepticons began, and his Temple of Knowledge is off-limits to all its participants. It is guarded by his disciples.

It is not known to many that Boltax is no longer a robot, but instead he himself is the Temple of Knowledge; the robot known as Boltax which presides over the estate is merely a puppet.

Millions of years ago, when the war on Cybertron was young, an equally young Optimus Prime sought the knowledge of Boltax to aid the Autobots in ending the war. Bringing the Triggerbots with him, he evaded the multiple traps outside the Temple of Knowledge, but was deterred by the Disciples of Boltax. The Triggerbots remained outside, while Optimus Prime continued inside to question Boltax.

Boltax welcomed him but could not give Prime exactly what he sought. Nevertheless, he allowed Prime to bathe in the knowledge of the Underbase in a chamber just beyond where they were standing. Optimus entered, but Megatron and the Triggercons were not far behind. Having already destroyed the disciples, they threatened Boltax as well. Boltax refused them access, and Megatron punched his fist through Boltax's chest, leaving his lifeless body outside the chamber.

In the resulting skirmish, Optimus Prime launched the Underbase off into space, destroying the Temple of Knowledge (the real Boltax), to keep it out of the hands of Megatron. Optimus Prime regretted his careless actions for the millions of years to come, though ironically it made his reputation as a great Autobot warrior. The Flames of Boltax!
Pipes is an excellent soldier, tough, brave, and very strong, and otherwise worthy of little note, except for his unusual ability and eccentric hobby.

His ability, which he is (to be fair) not the most proficient at controlling, is to emit clouds of corrosive gases from his exhaust pipes. This is possible in both modes, but is more useful (except to annoy motorists) in robot mode, where the pipes are on his arms.

If he stays at it for at least ten minutes, these noxious gases will eat through a 2" slab of ordinary steel (special alloys take longer). His own skin is well-protected against these gases, but in battle the coatings may flake off, and if he does not notice this (as frequently occurs) he is vulnerable to his own attack, with unpleasant results.

When he came to Earth, Pipes became enamored of the fleshlings' primitive and ingenious technology, and could not resist taking home cast-off examples when on missions. Eventually, a previously disused area of the Ark became his own personal museum of nose hair trimmers, patent rulers, and other worthless but fascinating ephemera of the throwaway society. He will gladly talk for endless hours about each prized find.

Only Wreck-Gar can be said to really enjoy an extended tour of Pipes' little museum, but Pipes is a good soldier and a friendly soul, and his comrades generally allow him his little eccentricity.
Pipes was present at the Ark when Trypticon came to destroy it. He and his fellow Autobots made a vain effort to hold off the city-robot until Metroplex's transformation cog was restored. Five Faces of Darkness, Part 5

Later, he accompanied Rodimus Prime, Kup, and the Aerialbots on a rescue mission after Perceptor and friends disappearing looking for a source of chronal energy. They found the Quintessons had constructed a time window on an abandoned asteroid for the purpose of undoing the original Autobot rebellion against the Quints on Cybertron. Perceptor was found alone, suffering serious injuries, and his team missing. Pipes' mechanical skills were put to work as a battlefield medic to try and patch up Perceptor, but his incoherent mumblings about theoretical physics didn't do anyone much good. Forever is a Long Time Coming

Pipes graduated from Autobot Military Academy, but nearly lost his friend Tailgate to a stupid initiation stunt when the hapless cadet accompanied some other Autobots into the Underground to prove his courage. Fearing the worst, Pipes and Outback went in after him. When they found Tailgate battling a group of techno-mutants, though, Pipes convinced Outback to hang back and let Tailgate prove himself in combat. Tailgate successfully defeated all comers, and the three Autobots returned to the surface. Underground!
Unlike Prowl, Prime's military strategist, Jazz responds well to change and improvisation. Whatever surprises the Decepticons spring, Jazz can deal with it. His position as Special Operations Agent calls for all the skills he possesses, yet he still has time to add some style into everything he does.

An admirer of Earth music of every kind, Jazz loves culture. More than most other Autobots, he has his finger on the pulse of Earth trends and lingo. Chances are, Jazz could tell you the status of almost any reality television show and each week's Top 40 list.

Jazz's personality makes him well-liked among the others of the Ark, especially Bumblebee. In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to find an Autobot who doesn't like or admire Jazz. Except perhaps Grimlock, who doesn't like anyone anyway.
Generation 1
:(Events from UK-only stories are in italics.)

Before Optimus became leader, Jazz was part of the self-styled Magnificent Six, a team of Autobot warriors who would be tortured and humiliated by the sadistic Megadeath. The Magnificent Six!

Jazz was one of the Autobots who crashed on Earth four million years ago, waking up in 1984. Jazz showed an affinity with human pop culture almost immediately, responding to Prowl's non sequitor assertion that his "logic center dictates the most advantageous course of action in any situation" with "Well, that is neat-o, Prowl."

Jazz's first foray into action came when the Decepticons attacked him and his fellow Autobots at Witwicky Auto Repairs, resulting in the kidnapping of Sparkplug Witwicky. Later, when Sparkplug was rescued and it was learned that the auto repairman had devised a way for the Decepticons to convert Earth fuel into a usable resource, the Autobots were enraged. Jazz shot a stream of fire to prevent Sparkplug's escape, causing the human to suffer a heart attack.

It was discovered that after the Autobots crash landed on Earth, a rescue ship was sent after them which was buried somewhere in England. The Man of Iron, one of its crew, had awakened a number of times in England's history, and had become a local legend. Jazz, along with Trailbreaker, Mirage, and Bluestreak, were dispatched to England under Optimus Prime's supervision. Jazz befriended (and kidnapped) a young boy, Tommy Harker, whose dad worked at the castle where the Autobot rescue ship had been partially unearthed. After questioning the boy, it became apparent that the rescue ship must be destroyed. At the climax of a battle with the Decepticons over the buried ship, Jazz fired his weaponry down into it, and it was pulverized. Possibly at the same time, Jazz took part in a mission in England to find a powersource that reversed Transformers personalities. Jazz eventually ended up destroying the Core of Pard during a battle with Starscream. To a Power Unknown!

Jazz spent three weeks in a shipping container in order to get to Skagway, Alaska unnoticed by the Constructicons. Hoist then became stuck while scouting the base, and Jazz suffered brain damage while coming to his aid. Hoist was forced to drag the uncooperative, bewildered Jazz to through hostile territory to safety. The damage was repairable. The Mission

When Galvatron time-jumped to 1986, Jazz was sent to scout out Decepticon territory and was captured. He would be used as bait to draw the Autobots into an ambush and was told of Galvatorn's origin before his brain was operated on to turn him into a murderous zombie-soldier. He was used against his fellow Autobots and needed severe repairs afterwards. Target 2006

Jazz was one of dozens killed in the Underbase battle Dark Star! and would later be resurrected by Ratchet as a Classic Pretender. Skin Deep He, Bumblebee and Grimlock emboldened the Autobot resistance before being sent back to Earth, but the actions of the Mayhem Attack Squad caused them to end up in the centre of Cybertron, at the face of the sleeping Primus. The end result was Primus being awoken and, as a result, Unicron heading for their world. Primal Scream Jazz was part of the team sent to VsQz to retrieve the Creation Matrix during the Matrix Quest but was defeated by Thunderwing. Dark Creation

In a sideways timeline, Jazz was one of the members of the Earthforce unit and served in it with distinction. Jazz, along with Silverbolt and the remaining Magnificent Six, was sent in 1990 to recover any traces of the Underbase in Yuss, where they'd run afoul of Megadeath. Re-encountering their old enemy and tortured by their memories, it was up to Silverbolt to convince them to fight on. Jazz helped beat Megadeath to death, exorcising his demons. The Magnificent Six!

Generation 2
Jazz played a significantly minor role in the Autobots' war with the second generation Cybertronians. He was not seen among their forces until Grimlock rescued Prime from the Decepticons on Earth, and even afterwards was only seen briefly, if at all.

Generation 2 (UK)
When Bludgeon began his assault on Earth, Optimus Prime was summoned back to the planet by Grimlock, and brought Jazz, Skram, and Sideswipe with him. While Prime confronted Bludgeon directly, Jazz and his operatives engaged another detachment of Decepticons. Despite their small numbers, Jazz's team defeated their more-plentiful opponents thanks to the fact that the 'Cons were operating on reduced power levels. Too much prolonged death and destruction takes its toll. They then joined up with Optimus and the Dinobots to drive off the returning Megatron as well.

Animated continuity
:Voice Actor: Scatman Crothers, Wally Burr (US), Kōki Kataoka (Japan)

Blacker than the inside of a drive shaft -- that's how Jazz described the north side of Cybertron. The slang-talking operations specialist was on a recon mission to ascertain Cybertron's bleak energy reserves, and his reports are what prompted the Autobot mission to search for new sources of energy outside of their home world. Jazz served as pilot for the Ark until severe asteroid turbulence knocked him from his seat. The Decepticons took advantage of the confusion and attacked, and both vessels and parties crash-landed on Earth.

Four million years later, in 1984, the Autobots and Decepticons awoke reformatted to fit in on the planet. Jazz traded in his sleek Cybertronian form for an even sleeker Porsche 935 Turbo. As a lieutenant to Optimus Prime Jazz was charged with assembling task forces and special mission teams to counter the Decepticon threat. Jazz accompanied the first mission to an off-shore oil rig, where his wrist-mounted grappling hook and winch came in handy saving Optimus Prime. He used the same line to stop Prime from riding the rapids at Sherman Dam, and to pull Bluestreak and Ironhide from an unscheduled lake swim.

Throughout their stay one Earth, Jazz was seen giving orders and accompanying Optimus Prime on almost any mission they undertake. He would also actually use his light and sound show attack on at least two occasions. He also helped liberate the people of Titan from the Decepticon's enslaving them by pretending to be Gods, and appeared particularly horrified at the Decpeticon's use of religious enslavement. The God Gambit

By 2005, those dang Decepti-jerks had overtaken all of Cybertron, forcing the Autobots to operate on Moonbase One and Moonbase Two and Autobot City on Earth. Though most of the Autobot's senior command staff were killed as a result of the Decpeticon's attack on the City, Jazz remained on Moonbase One, where he and Cliffjumper survived. Bad new was, the ginormous Unicron arrived, and subsequently ate both moons. Fortunately, Jazz, Cliffjumper, Spike, and Bumblebee were saved when Spike's son Daniel saved them from being dropped in an acid pit. Jazz and the other Autobots drove out of Unicron (and through space) and arrived on Cybertron, where he joined in the chanting of 'Til all are one as Unicron's severed head orbited Cybertron. The Transformers: The Movie

Dreamwave comic continuity
8.2 million years ago, Jazz and Prowl met Grimlock in the remains of Praxus' Helix Gardens to discuss the worthiness of Optronix to lead the Autobots. Jazz later attended the Matrix-transfer ceremony at the Chamber of the Ancients; he attempted to save Optronix - now Optimus Prime - when he was attacked by Decepticons, but was restrained by Grimlock. When Prime defeated the assassins, Jazz was convinced of his worth.

Soon afterwards, Jazz questioned Prowl's decision to allow Prime to explore the depths of the planet alone, but was prevented from pressing the issue any further when Shockwave attacked Iacon with an army of Decepticons. Jazz helped direct the battle from the Decagon, but the defenders were soon overwhelmed. Jazz was forced to begin evacuating important artifacts and hardware from the city, but was unable to finish before the Decepticons overran the Decagon. He and a handful of Autobots made a desperate last stand, but were saved from extinction when Starscream activated the planetary engines, devastating the city and forcing Shockwave's army to retreat.

7.4 million years ago, Jazz witnessed the space bridge explosion that seemingly killed Prime and Megatron. After the subsequent fragmentation of the Autobot faction, Jazz remained with the Prowl-led Autobots. He accompanied a group of Autobots to investigate a new mobile battle base at the Praetorus Wharf, only to learn that the base was fully operational. Despite the arrival of reinforcements, the titan was too much for Jazz and his cohorts; only when Shockwave recalled Trypticon to the Neutral Territories were they saved them from certain doom.

Battered, Jazz and the others limped back to Iacon, only to be forced to repel an attack on Autobase by The Fallen. Although Jazz, Mirage, and Sunstreaker fought valiantly, the mysterious entity defeated them and archived his objective: freeing Blitzwing from captivity.

Jazz was among the crew of the Ark when it crashed on Earth, and awoke in 1984 to battle the Decepticons. After years of fighting, Jazz and the other Autobots took part in Operation Liberation in 1998, a joint human/Autobot operation that defeated and captured the Earth-bound Decepticons. However, the Ark II, which was meant to convey the Autobots, the captured Decepticons, and a number of humans back to Cybertron was sabotaged by General Robert Hallo, sending Jazz and his comrades to the bottom of the Arctic Ocean.

A few years later, Optimus Prime awoke Jazz and a number of other Autobots, to combat the sinister Lazarus. He aided in the cleanup of Lazarus' latest target, the SmitCo oil refinery, and then moved on to Lazarus' base, which had been taken over by a revived Megatron and his deadly 'metal virus'. Jazz and the others briefly battled the Decepticons, but were stopped in their tracks when Hallo dropped a nuclear bomb on them. The virus absorbed most of the blast, leaving the Transformers unharmed, but continued to expand across the countryside. Jazz remained behind with a team to combat the virus, while Optimus Prime took a contingent of warriors to combat Megatron in San Francisco. Armed with Wheeljack-designed blasters to combat the virus, Jazz and his squad fought bravely, despite the blasters draining their energy and the well-meaning interference of the Canadian Army. But soon the virus overwhelmed them, forcing Wheeljack to sacrifice himself to destroy it. Jazz mourned over Wheeljack's fallen form.

Some time later, Jazz participated in a battle in Alaska over possession of an escape pod containing Scourge, only to be forced to flee with the other Autobots when Shockwave arrived from Cybertron, proclaiming a new era of peace. While Optimus Prime and a number of other Autobots surrendered to Shockwave's lieutenant Ultra Magnus, Jazz was left behind on Earth to command a small team of Autobots. After Magnus and Prime had departed, Jazz, Brawn, and Windcharger returned to the battlefield, but found no trace of the pod or Scourge.
Binaltech
When the Decepticons began to infiltrate the Binaltech project, Jazz volunteered to uncover how the enemy had managed to co-opt several new Autobot bodies for themselves. Working with several members of Earth Defense Command on this counter-intelligence endeavor, nicknamed "Operation: Carwash", Jazz decided to undergo the Binaltech process in secret himself in order to better keep an eye on the programs. To aid him on his special operations missions, Jazz also adopted a variation on the Genetronic Translink tech into his new body, enabling him to communicate with and direct a second autonomous body. Gifted with a self-developing artificial intelligence based on his own personality, this secondary Transformer was nicknamed "Zoom-Zoom" by Jazz, and the two began operating as a highly-skilled combat duo on Earth.
*A commercial for Transformers reflective iron-on patches advertised the "Prizes in Disguise" competition. When the iron-on patch was used, it was possible to instead find an instant win ticket for a Transformers voice changer (of the Enemy variety) - or to have a party with "life size" Transformers! Among the "life size" Transformers shown were Jazz and Skywarp. If you actually did party with Jazz and Skywarp, please let us know. So far, only a certain "Starscreamer89" has reported going partying with them.
* Jazz is one of the main characters in the series up to season three, when he started making only a few cameos with no lines. This is because Scatman Crothers, who voiced Jazz, died not long after The Transformers: The Movie (which takes place between seasons 2 and 3) finished production. He is given speaking lines and more on-screen time, however, in the Japanese-exclusive The Headmasters. A character from the first episode of the third season, named Munka Spanka, has Jazz's likeness. Many fans affirm that this strangely named robot should be initially Jazz, but was renamed after the death of Crothers.
* Scatman Crothers (as Jazz) is often credited as having coined the term "ginormous" (a combination of "gigantic" and "enormous") when using it to describe Unicron in The Transformers: The Movie, a term which was officially added by the Merriam-Webster Online dictionary in 2007; however, the term has actually been around for much longer, being listed in the Oxford English Dictionary as a "British informal" word that has existed since at least the mid-20th century.
* In recent years, toys sporting the name "Jazz" require an additional "Autobot" prefix for trademark reasons, hence making the official name "Autobot Jazz".
* The first toy planned for the Alternators line was Jazz as a Porsche 986. A prototype was made, but Porsche refused to grant Hasbro and Takara the license, stating that "Transformers are not worthy carrying the Porsche trademark. They are war machines and the toyline in no way represents the lifestyle and ideas which Porsche represents." As a consequence, the toy ultimately never went into production. Photos of the prototype were depicted in the Japanese book "The Transformers: Binaltech & TF Collection Complete Guide", and Hasbro later also displayed the prototype during the BotCon 2007 Hasbro Tour.
* The Alternators Mazda RX-8 (which ultimately ended up as Meister) was originally intended to be named "Camshaft", according to various early store listings and a premature reply from Hasbro's customer service. This would also fit with the early idea of making the Alternators toys "direct updates" of their characters' G1 predecessors. A prototype was leaked to the public in early 2004 sporting the same basic colors as the later Alternators "Autobot Camshaft" toy (the Acura RSX), although it's uncertain whether the prototype colors for the RX-8 were supposed to be indicative of the proposed colors for Camshaft (since the Acura redeco was originally intended as a G1 Bluestreak homage before being renamed into "Autobot Camshaft"). The reason why the RX-8 Alternator was ultimately not named "Camshaft" was apparently because the real-life Mazda RX-8 car doesn't have a camshaft. The irony is staggering, as Camshaft's original toy was an RX-7, which ALSO lacked a camshaft.
* Furthermore, there have been at least two different reasons stated why Hasbro toy was named "Meister" rather than "Autobot Jazz": For once, Hasbro were still hoping that Porsche would have a change of mind and grant them the license after all, like Chevrolet had done; also, Aaron Archer has been quoted stating that he thought a third toy named "Autobot someone" following "Autobot Hound" and "Autobot Tracks" would have been somewhat "redundant".

the fan term for a poorly articulated toy

A brick is a fan term, usually derogatory, to describe a toy that has particularly low articulation. Most examples of bricks tend to be smaller toys that have been given limited articulation to keep costs down. The Throttlebots and the Duocons are prime examples. Some larger toys, however, can also be described as bricks, such as Powermaster Optimus Prime or Fortress Maximus.

Of course, Fortress Maximus also has fourteen points of articulation, giving him more moving joints than nearly any other original Transformers toy ever made. You'd think that would be the exact OPPOSITE of a brick. I guess by this logic, every Transformers toy ever made is a brick! Yay!

Due to the limitations of the toy technology of the time, bricks are usually molds originating in Generations 1 and 2; however, some more modern toys such as Armada Super Optimus Prime have earned the same description. When recent toys are bricks, it is usually because a gimmick of some sort makes it difficult to add more articulation.

It's okay to make excuses for the modern toys being bricks. Just not the older ones. Why? No one knows.
