Enraged, Megatron tore out Bumblebee's vocal mechanism before finally giving chase to the AllSpark.

The Japanese Generation 1 cartoon continuity is a great and terrifying beast.

In America, Transformers had multiple continuities right from the very beginning, with the cartoon and comic going off into very different directions. In Japan, on the other hand, they didn't have those comics—they just had the cartoon, and of the copious amounts of additional media that have come out of Japan in the last twenty-five years, nearly everything has taken place somewhere in the timeline of the cartoon universe—either by design or as the result of retconning—creating one mighty behemoth of a chronology that reaches from twelve billion years in the past to thousands of years in the future.

As of 2008, Japanese Generation 1 cartoon continuity includes:

*The original American cartoon series
*Its numerous Japanese sequels and spin-offs:
**Scramble City
**Zone
**Generation 2

*TV Magazine story pages for all of the above, plus:
**Generation 2

*The cartoons of the Beast Era:
**Beast Machines

*The storylines of numerous 21st century cartoons, mangas and toylines:
**Car Robot
**Micromaster Collection
**Kiss Players

*Numerous story points plucked from assorted toy bios

And some other stuff the guy who wrote this timeline made up to make it all work.

Phew.

Generation 1
Things were pretty straightforward in the 1980s. In addition to creating assorted manga storylines that slotted into and around the continuity of the American series, the Japanese went on to continue to the story of the cartoon universe after the show's cancellation, with its original animated series The Headmasters, Super-God Masterforce, Victory and Zone. Even after these series came to an end, the storyline continued through TV Magazine story pages for subsequent toylines Return of Convoy and Operation Combination, and pack-in mini-comics for the Japanese release of Generation 2.

Beast Era
In America, Beast Wars does not explicitly follow on from either the cartoon or comics, picking and choosing select elements from both to form a “mythological” Generation 1 background for the series. Not so in Japan, where the series was treated as part of the cartoon timeline. As with Generation 1, the Beast Era was also expanded through the creation of exclusive sequel series, in this case Beast Wars II and Beast Wars Neo. Each of these series had companion mangas, although these were explicitly not part of the same continuity as the cartoons. And thus did the cartoon timeline continue to grow in a linear, sensible fashion, until...

The 21st Century
With the dawning of the 21st Century, Japanese cartoon continuity went crazy as a bag of starving cats in heat.

In 2004, Takara copped on to the worldwide resurgence in the popularity of Transformers, and began producing numerous series starring the Generation 1 characters, setting them in the built-in intermezzos of the cartoon universe which had up until this point gone undetailed. This year saw the commencement of Robot Masters and Binaltech, which took place in the twenty-year gap between the conclusion of the second season of the cartoon, and the movie. Then, two years later, Kiss Players slotted itself into the five-year interval between the movie and the beginning of season three (an interval that does not exist in the American timeline, owing to the Japanese moving season three from 2006 to 2010).

And that's when things went flat-out nuts.

In 2007, a paperback collection of the Kiss Players manga available exclusively at the Japanese convention Wonder Festival included an extensive timeline chronicling the ins and outs of the cartoon universe, incorporating all of the material covered above, while in the process propagating several dramatic changes to things as fans knew them. The timeline integrated series and stories that had previously been either discreetly separate from the Generation 1 cartoon timeline, or at least apathetic on their relationship to it; infamously, Car Robots (the Japanese version of Robots in Disguise) was retconned into being part of the cartoon timeline, along with obscure manga "Star Gate War" and many small story points from assorted toy bios. On top of this fusion of numerous existing sources, the timeline committed several extensive retcons to existing stories, mostly centred on reinterpreting Primacron's assistant and tying him into several other characters from various different series.

You may read this timeline here.

At your own peril.

65.28.61.236:

A plastic material is any that can be molded or shaped, but the term is specifically used nowadays to refer to a class of synthetic organic polymers with nearly magical properties. The heathen scientists insist that these materials are formed from chains of simpler hydrocarbons. They are named for the hydrocarbon monomers used in this chain; hence a molecule of polyethylene, used in plastic bottles, is made up of many molecules of ethylene.

Plastics contain resins, plasticizers, and fillers. The resin is the plastic itself. Plasticizers are stabilized oils that increase the flexibility of a plastic that they have been added to. (The vinyl in the seats of your 1972 Dodge pickup is the same plastic as the hard vinyl siding on your house; it has just been plasticized). Fillers are substances added to the plastic, sometimes to reduce the cost, and often to impart desirable mechanical properties, such as dispersing microscopic plastic bubbles throughout the material to improve its resilience.

Common plastic resins used in Transformers toys include:

*Polycarbonate (PC)

:Can be transparent or opaque. This is the same plastic from which CDs are made. Any clear parts on a Transformer, such as windows and light-piped eyes, are PC.

*Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)

:Strong and tough "engineering plastic". Lego bricks and car bumpers are made from ABS. The majority of any given Transformer toy is likely to be made of this. ABS also seems to suffer from a condition called Gold Plastic Syndrome when colored the swirled, metallic goldish-bronze color seen on some figures. However, not all gold plastic suffers from this; it seems to occur mostly in older plastics (pre-RID). It is currently unknown if the gold-colored parts of the Movie toys will show this form of rot.

*Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)

:Strong and hard, PVC can be made rubbery with the addition of plasticizers. Flexible PVC is often simply called vinyl. Most "rubber" tires are actually PVC.

*Polyoxymethylene(POM)

:A very tough, resilient, slippery plastic for mechanical parts. Any gears or small gimmick-related pieces are likely POM. POM cannot be painted.

*Polyamide(PA).

:Known by brand names such as Nylon, PA has similar properties to POM, but is stronger. Often used for larger parts that require resiliency, such as ball joints. PA also cannot be painted.

Other plastics that are commonly used in toys are Polystyrene (PS), Polyethylene (PE), and Polypropylene (PP); however, none of these are currently used for Transformers toys.

Most plastics in Transformers and other toys are thermoplastics, which liquefy when heated. Thermosetting plastics, an older technology, solidify when heated and are still widely used for many purposes, but only very rarely in toys. (Occasionally, they are found in toys' motors.)

Toys were super cool when they were mostly made of strong and awesome die-cast metal like Inferno and the tape guy with the cool voice, but later they changed to lame plastic for some stupid reason.

Stupid reasons
Thermoplastics are science's gift to the toy industry. They can be melted at fairly low temperatures, molded in colors with fine detail, and stand up well to play wear because of their resilience. They can be made transparent or opaque. They are electrical insulators. Finally, there are a great many plastics, as we have begun to see in the above list, with a wide variety of material properties, which makes it very likely that a suitable plastic could be found for a particular job.
:Violen Jiger is a Decepticon Emperor of Destruction from the Zone portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

The three-faced Violen Jiger (バイオレンジャイガー Baiorenjaigā) is a supernatural being that was created when the souls of many slain Decepticon soldiers coalesced together. Appearing after the demise of Deathsaurus, he became the Decepticons' New Emperor of Destruction. He is capable of separating into three enormous, insect-like creatures: Vion (バイオン Baion), Lenja (レンジャー Renjā) and Igern (イガーン Igān). Additionally, his unusual nature seems to grant him many <s>ill-defined</s> unique powers.

The entity known as Violen Jiger is a fusion of the souls of slain Decepticon warriors. Zone (story page) After somehow coming to life on the Tenth Planet, he proceeded to cover the world in dark clouds, blotting out all starlight and turning it into a barren, desolate world. From then on, he would use it as his base of operations. Zone (story page) Zone (story page)

Violen Jiger next gathered a group of Decepticon giants to serve as his Nine Great Demon Generals; Bruticus, Predaking, Abominus, Menasor, King Poseidon, Devastator, BlackZarak, Trypticon and Overlord. Under his orders, they took control of various worlds and began construction of a "Decepticon Zone". This caught the attention of Star Saber, who mobilized the Autobot forces of planet Zone against them. Zone (story page)

When the Decepticons attacked planet Feminia, Star Saber was there himself to try to stop them, only to be caught on the planet as it exploded. A month later, Violen Jiger once more sent out his Generals, and while doing so declared that the ultimate goal of the Decepticons was total control of the universe. As part of his plan for this, his Generals stole Energon Z from planet Zone, then travelled to Earth to acquire the Zodiac, so that "Super Energy" could be created by infusing the Zodiac with the Energon Z. This plan was foiled by the arrival of the Powered Masters, Dai Atlas and Sonic Bomber. Zone (manga)

Violen Jiger's Generals then suffered a series of defeats against the Powered Masters. Zone (story page) Zone (story page) In the meantime, however, Metrotitan had emerged from his birthplace beneath the surface of Titan and was taught the ways of evil by the Generals. Zone (story page)

Following Metrotitan's defeat by the newly-arrived Road Fire, Violen Jiger appeared on Earth himself. He easily shrugged off the attacks of the Powered Masters, seized the Zodiac, and took the Galaxy Rocket, abducting the Microtransformer Moon Radar and the Autobot allies Cain, Akira, and Emusa in the process. He then returned to the Tenth Planet with his prizes, as the Powered Masters in their Big Powered spaceship form followed in hot pursuit. Zone (story page)

When the Powered Masters arrived, Violen Jiger separated into his three insectoid components—Vion, Lenja, and Igern—and attacked the Autobots. While Igern battled Sonic Bomber in the air, Lenja threatened the Galaxy Rocket and its occupants, prompting Road Fire to safeguard it. Vion went after Dai Atlas himself, and was felled by the hero's Double Powered Cutter attack—losing the Zodiac to him in the process. Igern and Lenja, too, soon fell against their opponents. But Violen Jiger was not yet defeated. Zone (story page)

In outer space, Violen Jiger revealed his true form: a phoenix-like, skull-headed flaming mass composed of Decepticon spirits. Surely, the Powered Masters were no match for this! However, placing their hands on the Zodiac and focusing their minds, the Powered Masters were able to combine into their Big Powered form, but with thirty times its normal strength! The super-vehicle plowed through the creature, leaving a rainbow trail in its wake. Thus, Violen Jiger was defeated by the Rainbow Powered Attack!

With Violen Jiger vanquished, the Tenth Planet was freed from the miasma of evil he had surrounded it with, and became a true paradise for humans and Transformers alike. Zone (story page)

During the ongoing war between Autobots and Decepticons, the new Emperor of Destruction Violen Jiger and his Nine Great Demon Generals (Bruticus, Predaking, Abominus, Menasor, King Poseidon, Devastator, BlackZarak, Trypticon and Overlord) appeared without warning, heralding a new phase of battle.

For reasons unknown, Violen Jiger's Generals Overlord, Abominus, and Menasor laid waste to Planet Feminia, completely destroying the world and nearly killing Victory Saber in the process.

Later, in a swirling cloud of space, the Generals gathered before the humongous spectral form of their leader, who proclaimed Victory Saber to have been vaporized. Following a short cheer from his minions, Violen Jiger stated his intention to take over nearby space to create a "Decepticon Zone". As he switched between his three faces, however, he revealed that he required "Super Energy" to do so—which he would have his Generals gather by any means necessary.

76 days later, his Generals attacked the Autobot headquarters on Planet Zone, stealing their Energon Z, a powerful new energy-source. They then headed to Earth to search for the Zodiac, a primordial orb which supposedly birthed all life in the known universe.

Meanwhile, Dai Atlas, having found Victory Saber and taken him to Zone for medical attention, was informed of the Energon Z theft. He was then able to determine that the Generals would next target the Zodiac, and what their eventual goal was: by fusing the Energon Z and Zodiac together, they would be able to create a new planet! Travelling to Earth, Dai Atlas and Sonic Bomber put a halt to Violen Jiger's schemes, slaying several of his Generals and obtaining the Zodiac for the forces of justice. Enter the New Supreme Commander, Dai Atlas!

Notes
* Violen Jiger also appears in Zone story page #4, but only in a recap. He likewise appears in Zone story pages #6 and #7, but only in previews for the direct-to-video Zone episode.
* What Violen Jiger can actually do is kind of... sketchy. He evidently provided his Generals with their "Armored Gear" equipment... and BlackZarak was pretty dead when we last saw him, so he presumably brought him back to life... but as Trypticon was suddenly the same the size as the combiners, it seems he shrank him.
* The Zone comic is the only time Violen Jiger is depicted with eyes in the palms of his hands. Looks neat, though!
* An explicit connection between Violen Jiger and Metrotitan is never made, meaning there's no way of knowing if Violen had a hand in Metrotitan's creation.
* In the cartoon, each of Violen Jiger's three faces spoke with a different tone. The nature of this is never elaborated upon.
* Though all three forms of Zone media state that he was after "Super Energy", only the cartoon episode implies that Violen Jiger wants to use this energy to create a new planet. What he would have done with the planet is anyone's guess, but the idea may tie into the fact that the proposed series of Zone direct-to-video episodes was supposed to end with the creation of a new, Edenic world.
* While it can be safely assumed that Igern is based on a mantis and Vion is based on a stag beetle, it is more difficult to say what insect Lenja uses as a base. Some Japanese fans, however, surmise that he is a mole cricket.
* The English Romanization of his name was a hotly-debated topic for quite some time, with interpretations including "Violenjiger", "Violent Jiger", "Violent Chigger", "Violen Jig-er", "Violin Juggler", "Bio Ranger Iga", "Valium Chugger", and "Crazy Engrish Fun-Man". The publication of The Ark II finally provided us with an official spelling.
