Protoforms consist of an unspecified, free-flowing, metallic matter layered over basic robotic systems. In many universes, a protoform is the first stage in a Transformer's life cycle. These protoforms only await a life-giving spark and the alt-form information necessary to transform them into fully functional, living Transformer beings. Often, protoform modes are used to transport Transformers on intergalactic journeys.

Protoforms are transported or stored in stasis lock, in which state they look like smooth, robotic humanoids. When not in stasis lock, protoforms are a roiling mass of liquid metal around their internal frame.

In some universes, existing Transformers can place their sparks in a newly created protoform in order to assume a new form, or to recreate their old one. This is one way of rapidly repairing even the most extreme damage, by virtue of totally replacing the body.

Fiction
Beast Wars cartoon
Protoforms are often contained within stasis pods and dropped into unexplored worlds. The Axalon carried many such stasis pods for exploration reasons, and also Protoform X, a failed attempt to create an immortal spark, which was intended for dumping somewhere barren. When the ship was shot down over prehistoric Earth, Optimus Primal ordered the protoforms on board ejected into space. Beast Wars (Part 1) A while later, when the first stasis pod crashed to the ground, Dinobot was able to use a laser link to activate the pod's DNA scanner, allowing it to scan for compatible life-forms and reformat the protoform inside into Tigatron. Fallen Comrades

While Blackarachnia was in her protoform state, Tarantulas was able to install a Predacon shell program, turning her against the Maximals. Double Jeopardy On a later occasion, Rhinox worked frantically to save another protoform and the spark it contained, ultimately succeeding and bringing forth Airazor. The Spark Another attempt on Tarantulas's part to create a third spider Predacon failed when it turned out that the stasis pod had already scanned a life form, and metamorphosed the protoform into Inferno. Spider's Game

The destruction of the Vok Planet Buster knocked the remaining stasis pods out of orbit. Two were damaged on impact, reformatting the protoforms within into Fuzors. A third pod found by the Maximals contained a "blank" — a protoform with no spark. Coming of the Fuzors (Part 1) Rhinox was able to bring back Optimus Primal from the dead using the blank protoform. Coming of the Fuzors (Part 2) Protoform X also turned up, crashed in a swamp, and was able to be converted into a Predacon by Megatron. Bad Spark One protoform was twisted by a badly malfunctioning pod into the being which became known as Transmutate. Transmutate (episode)

A blank protoform was used by Megatron in a grand experiment, the ultimate fruit of which was a Transmetal 2 recreation of Dinobot. Feral Scream Part 1
Predacon warriors, who look like protoforms, were shown moving about the Predacon warship using their own power, though they were not shown to speak or have any kind of personality. After the Predacons had gathered enough information about the machines of Gaea's past, they then fed the information into the protoforms via energy waves. The protoforms were then altered into the Autorollers. White Lion, Run!

The atmosphere of the Planet Gaea could have caused the protoforms to rust. The New Forces Arrive! Despite this, a protoform was seen on the bridge of the Galvaburg II well into their visit to the planet. The Insect Corps Arrive

Robots in Disguise cartoon
Autobots (and possibly Predacons) can change into a protoform state during long journeys, presumably to conserve energy. Attributes of an Autobot's original form remain in whatever new form the being takes. For instance, Scourge retained the ability to detect O-Parts.

A downside to the protoform process is that it leaves the Autobots vulnerable to tampering. Megatron was able to use his spark's energy to turn Autobot protoforms into malevolent entities. The Decepticons
Protoforms are the first stage of Transformer life, which is usually followed by primary programming.

Live-action films
Protoforms grow and survive by feeding inside energon wombs. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (film) Protoforms are more than just the first stage of a Transformer's life, they are the "base" form that exists inside each robot. Protoforms are made of an ultra-dense, liquid metal material and are extremely hard to damage.

In the rare case they are not actively practicing their natural proclivity for chameleon-like disguise (usually only when engaged in interstellar travel), Transformers shed their exo-structure and return to their protoform state. This protoform is capable of transforming into its transition form: an armored, cometary shape capable of interstellar travel. Upon landing on a new world and transforming back into a protoform, the Transformer immediately begins trans-scanning for new alternate forms to adopt. When one is chosen, the protoform draws on its own ultra-dense substance and any extraneous matter nearby to generate a new exostructure disguise. Transformers: The Movie Guide

Starscream's attempts to breed a new army were met with failure because of low energon supplies, and the "hatchlings", as they were affectionately termed, were dying. When many Decepticons arrived on Earth with The Fallen to claim the Sun, they did not bother assuming alternate modes, and remained in their protoforms. They assisted in attacking NEST forces in Egypt where many were killed in a fire fight with the Autobots and Human troops. The remaining ones were killed by a U.S. military air strike. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (film)

Many Decepticon protoforms were hidden on the Moon, and came to Earth via the space bridge activated by Sentinel Prime.

When Sentinel gave the command for the Decepticons to isolate Chicago, many protoforms (some airborne) assisted in the occupation. One particular protoform pilot came and fired upon Sam Witwicky, Robert Epps and the other NEST soldiers, but they were saved when the protoform's ship was shot down by Optimus Prime. The Wreckers came along and ripped the pilot apart, telling him that it would hurt a lot. Ouch. (Owie!)

Later, under the command of Soundwave, another protoform aided in rounding up several Autobots that had infiltrated the city. At the behest of the human traitor Dylan Gould, Soundwave ordered the Autobot prisoners executed, starting with Que. Barricade pushed the Autobot scientist forward despite his pleas for mercy, and the protoform delivered the first shot, while Barricade killed Que by shooting him in the back, laughing derisively as his victim fell. He then looked on as Soundwave prepared to execute Bumblebee, but before Soundwave could kill him, Wheelie and Brains caused Decepticon fighters, as well as some of the Decepticon crew, to crash down from a Decepticon battle-cruiser. This caused a distraction that allowed Bumblebee and the other captive Autobots to break free, resulting in Soundwave's and the protoform's death. The remaining Protoforms were pushed back by the joint Autobot/NEST attack, and Optimus Prime downed many when he charged down the main battle field, including two very large protoforms. Nearly all of the troops present in the city were defeated, while many remained active around the Earth. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (film)

Protoforms are created from "proto-matter", mined from Cybertron's Sonic Canyons. Transformers Animated: The AllSpark Almanac II In their pre-life state, they resemble featureless grey mannequins, and are stored in pods that line the walls of the secret Matrix Chamber hidden in the dojo of their assigned protectors, the venerable Autobot Cyber-Ninja Corps. Five Servos of Doom Customarily, prior to being brought on line, protoforms are placed into "moulds", pre-built robot shells, which their proto-matter expands to fill. Endgame, Part I Following this, either the AllSpark or the mega-computer Vector Sigma is used to bestow them with a spark. Transformers Animated: The AllSpark Almanac II It is possible, however, to forego the use of a mould and place a spark in a protoform directly. Five Servos of Doom The same basic mould can be used for multiple protoforms, leading to similarities in body-type and transformation schemes; the 65356-9292-346 type is particularly popular and widely-used. Autoboot Camp Where humans would describe themselves as being "born", Transformers are "protoformed". Additionally, "protoform" is sometimes used pejoratively in Cybertronian society as a mocking name for the young or inexperienced.

In the closing stages of the Great War, Cyber-Ninja sensei Yoketron revealed the Matrix Chamber and its legion of protoforms to his student Prowl, lamenting that while they should be Cybertron's next great generation, they would wind up being used as an army of last resort if Project Omega failed to bring the war to an end. Subsequently, while Prowl was absent on a quest to commune with the AllSpark, Lockdown, another former student of Yoketron's, attacked the dojo and stole nearly all of the protoforms for Megatron. Five Servos of Doom As luck would have it, Project Omega did succeed in ending the war, and when the Decepticons were exiled from the planet, they secretly took the stolen protoforms with them. However, without the AllSpark, (which had been launched into space by the Autobots to keep it out of his clutches), Megatron had no means of bringing the protoforms to life, and so they remained in storage aboard the space cruiser Nemesis for millions of years. Endgame, Part I

Some time in the 22nd century, a protoform which had been granted a spark through means unknown, in a highly atypical foetus-like form, somehow materialized on Earth, in the laboratory of human scientist Isaac Sumdac. When Sumdac touched the protoform, it scanned his DNA, and reconfigured itself into a techno-organic form resembling a human baby. Sumdac "adopted" the strange little creature, naming it Sari, and raising her as his daughter, never telling her of her true origins. TransWarped

Eight years after Sumdac found Sari, the quest for the AllSpark brought the Transformers' war to Earth, and Sari and her father became allies of Optimus Prime's Autobots. To forge a power base for himself, treacherous Decepticon lieutenant Starscream set up base in the Nemesis (which he had crashed on Earth's moon), using the protoforms that still remained in its hold to create an army of clones of himself. A Fistful of Energon Starscream himself had previously died, but was being sustained through a sliver of the AllSpark wedged in his forehead, and so by breaking off tiny chips of it, he was able to give his clones—Skywarp, Slipstream, Sunstorm, Thundercracker, and Ramjet—the spark of life. A Bridge Too Close, Part I

Later, Megatron followed Starscream's example, using three protoforms and three AllSpark fragments to create giant cross-breed clones of Lugnut and Omega Supreme, the Lugnut Supremes. While Megatron readied his new war machines, Starscream—who had by this point spent a protracted period of time as a decapitated head—used a protoform to create a new body for himself, but it didn't last long: to prevent Starscream from betraying him again, Megatron destroyed his new body, and all the remaining protoforms, save three. Endgame, Part I These three protoforms were then recovered by Optimus Prime's Autobots during their battle with the Lugnut Supremes. Sari believed that she was originally one of the protoforms who had been aboard the Nemesis, but her unusual shape and form while in protoform state, and the unanswered question of how she wound up in her father's lab, left the matter lacking in a definitive resolution. Endgame, Part II

Prime
Protoforms were created by the AllSpark in the Well of All Sparks. In the past, protoforms would escape from the Underworld to the Cybertronian surface, but in the era of the caste system, they would be taught to transform, assume their most natural alternate mode, and be put to work. Protoforms remained the standard name for one's robot mode. Transformers: Exodus

Five protoforms were stored in a laboratory aboard the Harbinger. When Starscream found them, he turned them into clones of himself. These clones, linked to Starscream's very spark and will, were sent on a mission to assassinate Megatron. Of the five, only one escaped, and was later killed by Starscream himself. Whether Starscream took his fallen comrade's T-Cog is yet to be determined.Armada (episode)
It's not clear if Brunt is a single Decepticon robot, a type of drone, or a gestalt being. (He's known to carry ten sparks within his frame!) What is known is that these guys are very hard to kill (well, he does have ten souls) and bad to have around. Brunt's mere presence on the battlefield forces Autobot defenders to prioritise him above all other foes.

Autobot Stronghold is an online game capitalizing on the hype surrounding Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen. Once again the game demonstrates just how capitalist the Autobots can be.

It is also insanely addictive.

Story
The Autobots have to keep the Decepticons from reaching their "LG Stronghold". The Decepticons keep coming and coming in wave after wave. They're relentless! Fortunately, by taking the Sparks of their fallen foes, the Autobots can purchase LG technology to upgrade their offensive capabilities. They can also use the souls of the dead to buy duplicate versions of themselves to keep the Decepticon hordes occupied. It's kind of horrifying when you think too hard about it.

Gameplay
Play-wise, it is a standard "tower defense" game; players purchase various turrets (in the form of Autobot defenders) in order to prevent increasingly challenging waves of enemies from reaching the end of the map. Defeating enemies gives the player credits (in this case the Decepticons' very sparks!) with which they can purchase new turrets or upgrade existing ones.

The game has 50 waves of Decepticons, with each wave consisting of a set group of Decepticons advancing on the Autobot LG Stronghold along one of three (four if you count the flying Starscreams) set paths. Each wave is increasingly difficult, and as the game progresses multiple Decepticon types will emerge during the same waves. You can send out the next wave sooner by pressing the "Send Next Wave" button, though this needs time to refresh after each push.

Shortly after the game's release, it was quietly rebalanced—the higher level enemies became stronger and attacked in increasingly complicated and frustrating waves, and some of the Autobot attacks seem to have been slightly diminished in effect. The scoring for the game was also changed, to a more tiered system so that the further you get into the game the more points you get for sending out Decepticons quickly. When asked about the change, Andy Cho, LG Australia Web Manager, said:

<blockquote>"We believed the game was too easy when if first launched with one path, and it was always our plan to add in more paths. So it launched with a single path and a basic wave set, but a few days after launch we updated it with more paths and an all new wave set, plus the ability to have multiple enemy types per wave (not previously possible). This lead to lots of value tweaking etc. Opinion still splinters whether its too easy or too hard, we think we hit somewhere in the middle."</blockquote>

Fair enough, Andy. Fair enough.

Scoring
Each Decepticon has a set kill score, which doesn't increase as the game progresses. See the individual character entries.

When you press the "Send Next Wave" button you get a bonus to your score. The bonus is higher depending on how soon you press the button, and how far you are into the game. Big bonuses for sending wave fifty in early!

If you clear the game to wave 50 you receive a 1 million point bonus. Yes, that's right. ONE MILLION. Good luck getting on the top ten without clearing wave 50, buckos.

When you register your score you are asked a multiple choice question, "TruMotion 200HZ is an ideal feature for:" Well, I won't list the options. The answer is: "Fast paced sports program." If you get this question right (and if you don't now, you really suck) you get another bonus 10,000 points.

Upgrading
Each of your Autobots can be upgraded. There are four forms of upgrades, three of which are named after LG brandings:

200HZ TruMotion
:Lets your Autobot turn more quickly, thus targeting enemies behind him more easily. For some reason in practical terms this basically translates to an extra boost to your turret's firing rate. Very good in concert with the next power-up to make slow-firing characters like Ironhide and Ratchet shoot faster... or to make Bumblebee incredibly deadly.

2MS Response Time
:Lets your Autobot shoot faster.

Smart Energy Saving Plus
:Since your Autobot isn't wasting as much energy he can shoot further, increasing his range! No, I don't know how that works either.

Level Up
:Increases the damage from your Autobot's attacks. You can level up twice, getting to the rip-roaring level of... uhhh... 3. Usually the first level up is a little bit cheaper than other upgrades, letting you purchase a level up quickly — especially useful for quickly levelling multiple dudes. Prime's the exception, his first level up is always the same price as all his other upgrades.

Characters
Autobots
Bumblebee
:Cost 10 Sparks
:Upgrades 8 Sparks first level up, 10 sparks all other upgrades
:Range Close
:Rate of Fire Rapid
:Attack Low damage
::A solid little piece. When the game was first launched these guys were unstoppable killers once fully upgraded. A group of Bumblebees could destroy any opponent. Upon the game's rejigging, however, his efficiency at killing seemed to be reduced. Plus, you couldn't just plant a corridor of these guys and kill everyone any more. Still a good unit once fully upgraded. Bumblebee can only target one enemy at a time, and doesn't do damage to multiple targets occupying the same square.

Jazz
:Cost 15 Sparks
:Upgrades 12 Sparks first level up, 15 sparks all other upgrades
:Range Close (better than Bumblebee, though)
:Rate of Fire Moderate
:Attack Inhibits movement
::Jazz is basically a support unit for your other troops, especially your missile launchers. He doesn't do any damage, but he can slow the movement of any of the advancing Decepticons, including the Starscreams. This is especially effective in concert with Ratchet's splash damage.

Ironhide
:Cost 20 Sparks
:Upgrades 15 Sparks first level up, 20 sparks all other upgrades
:Range Middle
:Rate of Fire Moderate
:Attack Homing missiles
::Ironhide is a dependable missile launching unit. While he doesn't do any splash damage, he can damage multiple enemies occupying the same square. This makes him particularly effective when teamed with Jazz, who can make enemies all bunch up together.

:Debut Wave 3
::Designed to look like Generation 1 Shockwave only grey (that's right, movie universe Shackwave), these guys play like slightly beefed up Insecticons. The real big bonus is that they give you two sparks per kill. We... won't ask where Shockwave got that extra spark. No sir.
:Debut Wave 10
::Despite being called Starscream, his jet mode does not match that of the movie version (in fact, he more closely resembles Dreadwing, though he might also be based on Armada Starscream). Starscream flies through the middle of the screen in two columns of varying numbers of Decepticons (near the end of the game there's so many of him you'll cry). Starscream's flight pattern has forced a lot of strategies for beating the game to be built around defending the central three columns of the game board.

Ravage autobotstronghold.gif
:Debut Wave 11
::Ravage is one of the most frustrating enemies in the game. Moving really fast and being relatively easy to kill, your defenders often don't target Ravages, going for bigger, badder targets. So streams of the little buggers pour through your defenses. Always have a backup. Oh yeah. He really looks like Transmetal Rattrap.
:Debut Wave 25
::Basically upgraded Shockwaves. These guys are tough to kill, so unlike Shockwave it's not a quick payout for your two sparks. At least we can guess where he got an extra spark—since it's Galvatron, he probably ripped it out of someone else and ate it. He may or may not be Megatron.
:Debut Wave 30
::Yes, Brunt. As in the tank that comes with Trypticon. No, it's not Megatron. In fact there is no Megatron - oh wait. These guys are damned hard to kill, and bad to have around because your defenders will prioritise them. Each one gives you 10 sparks. That's right, this thing is so tough it has 10 souls.
Development
The game was developed for LG Australia by a group called SOAP Creative. Nicolas Mountford from the team had this to say about the game... well, and other stuff, but that's private:

<blockquote>Autobot Stronghold is still very popular, there are around 100,000 plays each day and a total so far of about 1.5 million plays world wide.

As for credits on production for the game, almost everyone in the company contributed in some way, its best to say the credit goes to SOAP Creative.</blockquote>

Nick is awesome. Plus, he totally said our Wiki is awesome, which means we think he's awesome too. He provided the sketches for the Autobot missiles that can be seen to the right, as drawn by one of the SOAP creative designers.

Check out the external links for more information on SOAP Creative. Like for instance the fact that one of their team appeared on The Gruen Transfer. Yeah—that's gonna mean an enormous amount to about three of you, I know.

Notes
*The title page misquotes Optimus Prime, saying that "Fate rarely calls upon us at the time of our choosing" instead of "at the moment of our choosing."
*It is possible to finish this game (without ANY Decepticons reaching the LG Stronghold) using 14 fully-upgraded Bumblebees and only one fully-upgraded version of every other Autobot except Jazz. Jazz is dead by the time this game is supposedly set, anyway. Sorry, Jazz.
*Be warned: if you play it once, you will be playing it again many, many times.

Still a damned good unit once fully upgraded.

Ratchet
:Cost 30 Sparks
:Upgrades 24 Sparks first level up, 30 sparks all other upgrades
:Range Wide
:Rate of Fire Reduced
:Attack Splash damage missiles; Ground attack only
::Ratchet has a really long range, high damage and each missile can damage multiple targets in multiple squares. This makes him perfect for teaming up with Jazz. His main disadvantage is an achingly low rate of fire. So slow. So very slow.

Optimus Prime
:Cost 50 Sparks
:Upgrades 50 sparks all upgrades
:Range Wide
:Rate of Fire Moderate
:Attack Upgrades to multiple targetting
::Prime kicks butt. When upgraded he has range rivalling Ratchet's and can target multiple enemies at once, making him an enormously effective defensive unit. Too bad he costs so darn much. Prime only becomes available for purchase once your score reaches over 100,000.

Makeshift
:Makeshift is a Decepticon from the Prime portion of the Aligned continuity family.

Makeshift, code designate 777, is a Shifter, a legendary breed of Cybertronian who can change his shape into any form that has roughly the same mass. More importantly, he can alter his voice and mannerisms to impersonate other Transformers- and he's pretty good at it too. Makeshift has claimed under interrogation that he doesn't kill his prey when it's not necessary, but he's not the most honest of robots.

Makeshift has formed a distinct enmity with the sometimes-Decepticon Axer.

Fiction
Aligned novels
Posing as the young and eager Autobot known as Hound, Makeshift made his way aboard the Ark as it left Cybertron, travelling to Velocitron with the rest of Optimus Prime's crew. Once the Ark landed, he took a new shape and inspired Ransack and his cronies to overthrow Override's regime and rule Cybertron alone. Not long afterwards, he sabotaged the Ark in an attempt to trap the Autobots on Velocitron, but this failed as the ship was repaired. As tensions boiled over on Velocitron, Makeshift escaped in his Hound persona to the world of Junkion, and took the form of a Junkion trader known as Shearbolt (he may or may not have killed the real Shearbolt) to misdirect Prime's search team. During an interrogation Axer revealed Makeshift's true identity to the Autobots. He once again tried to destroy the Ark. This time, though, Optimus and Jazz managed to outwit him and trapped him in a stasis field. After an interrogation session, he was taken prisoner by the Junkions and trapped in an old spaceship component, unable to escape. When Megatron removed the Requiem Blaster, the component was broken and Makeshift found freedom and an injured Axer. Not only did he refuse to help Axer but he sold him out to the Star Seekers under the guise of Wreck-Gar's friend Detritus. He was escaping the Junkions and his current location is unknown. Transformers: Exiles
:Voice actor: James Horan/Kevin Michael Richardson (English), Dennis Schmidt-Foß (German)
Makeshift was one of the many troops under Starscream's command. When Bulkhead's old Wrecker buddy Wheeljack was on his way to Earth, Soundwave downloaded the Autobot's form and war record into Makeshift, so that he could impersonate Wheeljack. The real Wheeljack was captured, and Makeshift took his place on the battlefield in time for Bulkhead, Arcee and Bumblebee to arrive.

The Autobots accepted Makeshift as Wheeljack and held an impromptu party. Makeshift attempted to fulfill his mission and activate the GroundBridge for the Decepticons to storm in through, but it had been damaged in a recent Scraplet attack, and Ratchet had it deactivated for repairs. As Bulkhead's suspicion rose, Makeshift asked to be shown around by Miko. He managed to learn the location of the Autobot base from her, and asked if she could show her where the exit was. This led them back to the main control room, where a suspicious Bulkhead demanded he tell the story of the Battle of Darkmount Pass. Makeshift recalled the information from Wheeljack's war record, but got a vital fact wrong. When Bulkhead pointed out his error, Makeshift realized he'd been made, and took Miko hostage, threatening to "squeeze her into pulp".

The ground bridge was eventually ready, and Makeshift activated it at the coordinates he'd been given. As he prepared to go through it, Wheeljack, who'd escaped the Decepticons, came through in the other direction. The pair dueled with their swords until Wheeljack was victorious, and Bulkhead threw Makeshift through the ground bridge. Arriving on the top of the Decepticon ship, Makeshift started to report the location of the Autobot base, but he had failed to notice that the grenade he carried at his hip had been set off by the Autobots. As Starscream and Soundwave bailed, Makeshift was caught in the explosion. Con Job

Notes
* While being at the center of an explosion has often been a nonfatal event for Transformers in past series, Prime executive producer Jeff Kline has stated that "When we kill a character, we kill a character"(Unlike Micheal Bay.) At 2011, the Prime show runners admitted to realizing that introducing a character with Makeshift's powers so early into the show's run was an unwanted limitation on future episodes, which made his quick demise a necessity. Well, that, plus, y'know, he found out where the Autobots' base was, and thus had to die by necessity of the plot.
