In Bloenfontein, South Africa, most people are paying attention to the final of the 2010 World Cup at Free State Stadium. But at the local NEST maximum security holding facility for captured Decepticons, Bludgeon is paying attention to getting out. Brakedown is paying attention to needling the dangerous killing machine, mocking him for being beaten by a cadet and mocking the idea he let himself get caught. Bludgeon, however, releases Scalpel from a hidden compartment to slice through his locks, and points out that there's nowhere better to recruit a Decepticon splinter faction than a jail full of angry, murderous mechs...

As Bludgeon is set loose, declares war on humanity, and begins to spring his fellow prisoners, NEST calls in the Autobots Wideload, Smokescreen and Brawn, who are on post. While they're en route, the liberated Brakedown hurriedly tries to apologise to Bludgeon... only to find out he was let go so he could be murdered, as an example to any other dissenters!

The Autobots take up positions: Brawn warns things will get ugly, while Smokescreen realises the Decepticons will be disabling the clamps that restrict their weaponry and alt modes. The group of five Decepticons breals through the walls and Wideload is immediately sent flying towards the stadium. With back-up ten minutes away, Brawn orders Smokescreen to take cover behind him, as he can take more punishm- wait, no, he takes damage too and Smokescreen is smashed backwards into the stadium by an irate Lockdown. Brawn tries futilely to stop Bludgeon but to no avail, about to get killed... when Bumblebee, Springer and Gears arrive to save him!

But that done, they inform him that Optimus has ordered them to allow the Decepticons to leave: there are too many civilians around. Brawn protests, pointing out the human media will just see them letting the enemy go, whatever their reasons, but Gears tells him that they have no choice. Their pride is not worth more than human lives.
"Time I was getting out of here."
:—Bludgeon

"Imagine for a moment that you wished to build your own splinter group of Decepticons. Where better to start a recruitment drive... than in a holding pen full to bursting with embittered captives?"
:—Bludgeon

"You're.... going... back... to... your.... nice... warm... cells..."<br>
"I think not."
:—Brawn pushes through Bludgeon's cannonfire

"Whatever our reasons, it'll look like we lost. Or worse... that we were scared."<br>
"I know. But when it comes to saving lives we have to shelve our pride. Sometimes, Brawn, the hardest thing of all... is doing nothing."
:—Brawn and Gears

Errors
* The World Cup was actually played in Johannesburg, at the Soccer City stadium.

* The shot of the Decepticon gang is... confusing, as Reverb is the wrong colour and Bludgeon's line is given to an identical but differently coloured tank. Who that tank should be is not clear; it could be Tankor but the colour is wrong there too.

* Lockdown is gold with blue car parts, which makes it initially tricky to tell it's him.

* We never see Optimus play football like the cover promises! :(

Notes
* Having Decepticon prisoners online is odd, but seen before. The former was even seen in a story where a Bludgeon escaped!
** Similarly, G1 Bludgeon has also become a Decepticon leader.

* Bludgeon's gang includes Reverb, Lockdown, a purple plane (Skywarp?), and a grey-and-purple tank (probabaly Tankor)

* Scalpel was blasted to scrap in the official movie adaptations Revenge of the Fallen (novel) Revenge of the Fallen issue 2, but his death wasn't in the film itself. So he's alive here! Yay!

* South Africa is established as a NEST member-state.

* Furman's Nefarious issue 2 also introduced Brakedown, only to kill him. Guess no one likes Brakedown!

* Smokescreen is shown as being alive and not dead, not the first time Titan's clashed with IDW's 'official' Movie comics.
Law and Disorder
"I wasn't 'destroyed' in the first film, merely inconvenienced. So there! Anyone who says different sucks coolant."<br>
:—Barricade

"What is it with you people and Unicron? He's the destroyer of worlds, the infinite darkness, he ushers in the end times, I tell you. THE END! And you want to see him in a movie, as a piece of sideshow entertainment? I despair, I really do."<br>
"Hmmmm, I think I'm going to have to agree with 'Cade on this one ... Unicron is the dark lord of the TRANSFORMERS; he's like Simon Cowell, George Bush and a Tyrannosaurus Rex, all rolled into one...
:—Barricade and Ironhide paint a grim picture

"Devastator can be anything from six, seven or even nine seperate 'bots! However, I blame those pitiful minions, White (Editor) and Patrick (Deputy), for this oversight, and have reduced their beer rations accordingly."
:—Barricade

"Is there going to be a third TRANSFORMERS movie?"<br>
"Gemma, there is a thing called the internet. If you use it, and perhaps a search engine.."
:—A teenaged fan and Barricade

Starscream's Stars
"CANCER (22 JUN - 22 JUL): The Stars have promised that your special someone is just around the corner. Well that's great but which one? Can't the Stars give you a reference from the A-Z, just so you know where to be at the right time? And what time should you be there anyway? The Stars aren't actually being of any help."

"VIRGO (23 AUG - 22 SEPT): Oh, now the Stars are moaning because they're saying you don't appreciate their help."

"LIBRA (23 SEPT - 23 OCT): You have defriended the Stars from Facebook."

"SCORPONOK (24 OCT - 21 NOV): The Stars have deleted your number from their mobile."

"PISCES (19 FEB - 20 MAR): Run into the Stars at McDonalds. It all gets a bit awkward but there are apologies and hugs. Stars give you their mobile number again."

Errors
* Contents page forgets to mention The Beautiful Game quiz.
* Ironhide capitalises the "r" in rex.

Notes
* The comic blatantly ties into the contemporary 2010 World Cup. That starts in June rather than May though, so #13 is a bit early. This story was originally meant to be in #14, the June issue.
* Barricade and Ironhide cover both the number of Decepticons in Devastator (however many Dev wants), whether the three Arcee robots are sisters (they're not), and who the Buffalo MPV Decepticon was (Ironhide isn't sure but says he's just a Bonecrusher imposter). Those guys like it tough!
* Ironhide also mentions a new, never seen character, Sideswipe's brother Sunstreaker
* The comic got so many entries for the Build A Bot competition that it's still printing some of the honourable mentions!
* This is the first time Starscream's Stars told a narrative.
* Continuity: Revenge of the Fallen (sequel)

Over at Monument Valley, Springer is teaching Jolt, Dune Runner, and Rollbar the tricks of the trade. First: know your enemy, and second: do the unexpected, as the enemy will know you. As a demonstration, a drone plane stands in for an airborne Decepticon; rather than engaging it in a dogfight like a Decepticon would expect, Springer gives it his rocket-punch at two hundred feet per second! He lets the cadets know he's been brought to Earth to whip them into shape, and he's going to do it...

...to which Jolt asks, and gets, permission to speak. While he says none of them want to disrespect Springer, they've been trained and ready for weeks. They don't need training, they need real combat situations to really show what they can do. Springer leaves, saying he'll see what he can do. The other cadets are stunned Jolt didn't get battered for that, but the guy considers Springer's reputation to be exaggerated: he's not a monster, he's just a soldier's soldier!

Springer's true to his word, and the cadets are brought in three days later when Tankor attempts to break in to NEST's Alamo armoury. Tankor's got hostages and is demanding safe passage out of their perimeter. Since he knows NEST won't endanger humans, he thinks they'll cut a deal; Springer decides to do the unexpected and transforms to go on the attack, forcing Tankor onto a noisy defensive... while the cadets sneak round the back to rescue the hostages. It's a good plan, until Jolt and Dune Runner notice Dirge sweeping in... Tankor was deliberately waiting for help, and now Springer's outnumbered!

Dune Runner reminds Jolt that their orders are to focus on the hostages, but Jolt decides the others can handle that, he's going to improvise. While Dirge, ecstatic about the thought of bagging a war hero, engages the surprised Springer and cripples him, Tankor prepares to fire on the wounded Autobot... but Jolt uses his whips to move the tank's turret so the shot hits Dirge instead! The jet immediately flies off in fear, leaving the other Decepticon to be captured.

Springer is angry that Jolt disobeyed a direct order, clearly having ignored everything he was taught. The car gets out of this with sheer nerve: saying that by ignoring the orders he was expected to follow, he was following the second rule of engagement!

Quotes
"You've got to mix it up out there, step outside your spec. Why? Because the enemy will know you!"
:—Springer

"So NEST builds a secret armoury under the site of a famous siege. Someone really didn't think that one through."

"Your second rule of engagement: do the unexpected. You expected me to stick to the plan... I didn't!"
Errors
* Tankor has magical colour changing powers, starting off green and then becoming the silver of his toy between pages.

Notes
* While little concrete is said about Springer, he's considered by Autobot and Decepticon alike to have an outstanding war record. At the Alamo siege, he seems to be on equal rank with William Lennox as the two are working out the strategy together.
* Like Reverb before him, Dirge only turns up in vehicle mode.
* It's Rollbar who leads the cadets into the Alamo. Between that and leading them through Death Valley last issue, he appears to be the unofficial leader.
Law and Disorder
"I have created a super-cool new Decepticon infiltrator called Luna ... he is very colourful, as he likes to stand out from the crowd."<br>
"So, he's a brightly-coloured Decepticon infiltrator? I see. Well, that will make my life easier."
:—A young child finds Ironhide is a hard sell.

"There is a reason you couldn't find a <u>weekly</u> issue of TRANSFORMERS, and that's because it comes out every four weeks. If this is too much for your backward, reptilian hindbrain to comprehend, too busy as it is performing such simple tasks as breathing and growing hair, then perhaps you should subscribe. That way we'll send you the comic, and you'll never miss an issue, and your hindbrain can go back to evolving thumbs.
:—Barricade

"[Twilight's Last Gleaming] is set in an alternative universe where Megatron won at the end of the first TRANSFORMERS film. Naturally, I had to have a word with the author, Simon Furman, and make sure it had a proper ending."
:—Don Ironhide is very unhappy

"We're not sure about Starscream ... either the interstellar distances are so vast that it is taking Starscream months to achieve his [mission], or the security at the home for the megalomaniacal is more impressive than we thought."
:—Barricade explains Starscream's absence from the letters page

"As you'd expect, I'm in War for Cybertron, but Barricade..."<br>
"Shut up! I didn't want to be in the stupid game anyway!"<br>
" ... I best talk to Barricade, he's crying in the corner. Again. Oh dear."
:—Ironhide and Barricade

Starscream's Stars
"LIBRA (23 SEPT - 23 OCT): The Stars are so sick and tired of you ignoring their advice. From now on you'll just have to make it up as you go along and then it'll be all your own fault."

"AQUARIUS (20 JAN - 18 FEB): Remember: any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. Just saying. Doesn't mean a thing. No need to worry or anything. How's the life insurance, by the way?"

"PISCES (19 FEB - 20 MAR): Why were you born a stupid fish? Why couldn't you have been born under a cool star sign..."

Errors
* Barricade says Optimus Prime is entitled to be called Prime as he bears the Matrix of Leadership. In the films, he didn't.
* By accident, concerns about Blackout being revived are attributed to Barricade.

Notes
* Back to paper covers and a £2.50 price tag.
* Ironhide and Barricade were active on Earth in the 80s, remembering the days of mullets and Tom Cruise with horror. Ironhide used to look just like a red Ratchet and Barricade was a Micromaster.
* According to Barricade, Megatron and Optimus Prime aren't related: they call each other "brother" because of how long they've known each other.

Jolt, Dune Runner, and Rollbar are on a survival exercise in Death Valley, looking for a town "that doesn't exist on any map", running only on their reserve power. Both Jolt and Dune Runner aren't too happy with the area, with Dune Runner noting that there's something wrong about it. Possibly it's the ravenous decomposing horror that's spotted them and roars that it needs parts...

An irritated Rollbar tells them it's a survival exercise, it's meant to be hard: they need to stop acting like the raw cadets they are and start acting like proper Autobots. Dune Runner is having none of it, pointing out they're going to be cadets for a long time: they all arrived on Earth after the great battle against The Fallen, and Ironhide's crew can handle the mopping up of the remaining Decepticons. But while he thinks they're surplus to requirements, Rollbar is determined that they're going to prove themselves to be Autobots anyway! While Dune Runner is dismissive of Rollbar's enthusiasm and their chances of finding their objective, the truck knows where to go: he did some research before coming, and leads the other three to an old, abandoned mining town. (The decomposing fiend follows...)

Their task now is to find the emergency recharge pack in town before their reserves give out. (Dune Runner will be glad to get it and leave this creepy place!) Jolt swiftly finds the pack, happily noting that he can find any power source... but the undead monster finds him as well! One horrified scream later and the monster makes his way towards the other cadets, tearing into Dune Runner. Rollbar finds Jolt, his left arm torn off at the shoulder, but the wounded 'bot orders his comrade to go help Dune Runner instead. As the monster tears an arm off the other cadet, screaming about a need to rebuild, Rollbar whallops him so hard the creature's neck bends back...

And then he hits Rollbar flying! His rotting arm has shattered in the process, so he plugs Dune Runner's severed arm into its place. But he needs more, and Jolt knows that, with them running on empty, they've only got one chance against this rotting fiend... and so he uses every bit of energy in the recharge pack to charge up his electro-whips and finally puts the monster down! The battle done, Dune Runner wants to put the creature down; Rollbar disagrees, saying they're going to act like Autobots. Instead of killing him, they're going to take him back to Diego Garcia.

Two days later, Ratchet calls the cadets in with answers. It turns out the half-dead Decepticon is called Dead End, and the Decepticons built him with an experimental regeneration circuit that should have repaired combat damage automatically. Instead, it drove Dead End mad and ate away at his molecular cohesion; with his core programming running, he was driven to desperate extremes to keep himself together. By getting Dead End to Ratchet, the cadets saved his life and showed their commitment to being Autobots. In Ratchet's book, they've got what it takes!

Quotes
"So what you saying, Dune Runner? We should just give up? Not me. Uh-uh. We show them what we can do. And keep showin' 'em!"
:—Rollbar

"PARTS... SPARE PARTS!"
:—Dead End

"We should put it out of its misery."<br>
"No, we shouldn't. Cadets or not, we're Autobots — let's start acting like ones."
:—Dune Runner and Rollbar

Errors
* It's presented like Jolt was also a dude who came to Earth after the second film. Now, we know he didn't have many scenes but c'mon, guys...
* That's not a Decepticon Ironhide and Sideswipe are 'cleaning up', it's Hoist! (This could be a twisted G1 homage rather than meant to be the movie-verse Hoist)

Notes
* On the Transformers Comic Facebook page, a solicit for the issue says that Dead End was cast out by Megatron after he was released from stasis on the Nemesis and it was clear he'd gone wrong. This is never stated in the issue itself, but is pretty implicit since he's wondering around on his lonesome, muttering as he dies that he "MUST... OBEY... MUH-MEG...". (Bizarrely, the solicit says the story takes place in Alaska and that Depthcharge is in it...)
** This indicates Megs is experimenting on the hatchlings.

* The war on Earth is explicitly stated to be considered over, reduced to a clean-up operation.
* Dead End is based on his Deluxe class toy, and is given a fearsome set of fangs that his toy doesn't have. When Ratchet saves him, his face turns into the toy's mouth.
* When Dead End attaches spare parts to himself, they change colour to match his other parts.
* Ratchet looks disturbingly happy when talking about the regeneration unit that almost killed poor Dead End!

Contents
Free gifts
* "FREE! Watch Blaster/Disk Shooter WATCH!" — a fake wristwatch that fires Transformer-adorned disks.

Law and Disorder
"...when we started this letters column I could have happily ejected you into the nearest star, but now I'm getting to like you."<br>
"No you're not. Stop saying that."
:—Ironhide and Barricade

"Look, I'm not defecting to the Autobots. I mean, it would be nice to hang out with other 'bots who transform into cars, but I just can't!"
:—Barricade

"I like this [Decepticon jack o'lantern] because two days after this photo was taken, the whole thing probably rotted and collapsed. Quite a fitting visual metaphor for the Decepticons, huh?"<br>
"I prefer to think of it as a shining beacon of artistic talent and human ingenuity, from a loyal supporter of the Decepticon cause."
:—Ironhide and Barricade

"Well done, Thomas, keep up the good work and we'll be sure to spare you and your family when we take over this wretched, unbearably wet planet."
:—Barricade

"You're little more than a mobile phone with a personality, who overcompensates for his shortcomings with overly large cannons."<br>
"The cannons are great though, aren't they?"
:—Barricade and Ironhide

Starscream's Stars
"VIRGO (23 AUG - 22 SEPT): Lay your cards on the table when faced with a problem. Of course they're tarot cards and you just picked 'Death'."

"SAGITTARIUS (22 NOV - 21 DEC): The sun has put a smile on your face. That's because Megatron has used a giant magnifying glass to burn one on."

"AQUARIUS (20 JAN - 18 FEB): The only way you'll walk in Megatron's shoes is when he stomps on you and you end up like toe jam between his claws."

"TAURUS (20 APR - 20 MAY): Wow. It turns out you're a Decepticon, not an Autobot. That would explain all the dreams you have about conquering helpless planets and then you wake up crying."

Notes
* We get the oversized card covers with cutaway gifts again. The price goes up to £2.75.
* This is the first time that the puzzles and competitions have been given some resemblance to the events of the strip!
* Ironhide thinks Jolt got "quite a bit of screen time for a new kid on the block". He's wrong.
* A ten year old mailed in his own Superion!
* This is the first time the magazine cover hasn't featured a character who appeared in the latest film. Props to Dead End for breaking the glass ceiling there!

"So what you saying, Dune Runner? We should just give up? Not me. Uh-uh. We show them what we can do. And keep showin' 'em!"

* Scalpel was blasted to scrap in the official movie adaptations Revenge of the Fallen (novel) Revenge of the Fallen issue 2, but his death wasn't in the film itself. So he's alive here! Yay!
* Smokescreen is shown as being alive and not dead, not the first time Titan's clashed with IDW's 'official' Movie comics.

I didn't!"

* Bumblebee's Guide: The Solar System. Various facts about the solar system by Bumblebee, as well as the mention of the Decepticons first landing on Mars and a defensive claim that he took so long to find Sam Witwicky because there are too many planets in the system.

Quotes

Yay!
