The term '''Seeker''' refers to [[Decepticon]] jet troopers who share [[Starscream (disambiguation)|Starscream]]'s [[body-type]] but with different colors or minor variations in wing and head shapes. This is most clearly and commonly known from ''[[Generation 1 (franchise)|Generation 1]]'', but any franchise with a Starscream is almost [[To sell toys|inevitably]] going to feature a similar "family" of [[redeco]]ed jet-formers.

The word "Seeker" hovered a long time in a strange gray area between official and fan-coined terms. It seems to have originated in ''extremely'' obscure official or semi-official writing, but somehow became widely used among fans. ''(See [[#Origin of the term|below]].)'' In 2002, the term appeared in dialog from the first issue of ''[[Transformers: The War Within|The War Within]]'' from [[Dreamwave Productions]], [[Canonizing|making it truly official]] after years of controversy. The term "Skyraiders" (see [[#Alternate terms|alternate terms]]) was assigned to the prototypical Starscream-like air warriors that [[Skyquake (G1)|Skyquake]] developed at the very beginning of the war. The ranks of the Skyraiders did not seem to include any of the usual Seekers, but instead comprised other flying Decepticon characters. In the Generation 1 cartoon there were large numbers of [[generic]], unnamed Seekers in addition to the named characters. They came in a wide variety of colors, from extra duplicates of Starscream or one of the other named guys, to original and distinct looks all their own. They seem to have formed the bulk of the Decepticon forces on [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], as well as among [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]]'s initial troops on [[Earth]]. They gradually became less common, perhaps as a result of casualties... or the cartoon's production team becoming more careful, or more-likely having more "actual" Decepticons to work with as the toy line expanded. (Extra [[Reflector (G1)|Reflector]] units and alternate color cassettes were also used along with these Seekers, early on, to fill out the comparatively thin Decepticon ranks.)

These unsung Seekers would be recognized years later in ''[[Heroes of Cybertron]]'' toy form as the [[Air Warrior]]s (all using the common lavender/white color scheme). Soon afterward, the [[Dreamwave Productions|Dreamwave]] ''Generation One'' comic series introduced an army of similarly-colored Seeker drones.

Around the same time, another background Seeker was also given a new life through toys and Dreamwave comics: [[Sunstorm (G1)|Sunstorm]]. This yellow-orange Seeker was a nameless background character in the first episode of the ''Transformers'' cartoon, until [[e-HOBBY]] turned him into an [[exclusive]] toy (available with an [[Autobot]] also based on a [[Hauler|first-episode cameo]]). ==Unicron Trilogy Seekers==
According to one minor source in ''[[Transformers: Armada (franchise)|Armada]]'', when any Transformer converts to a jet, he is called a "seeker"<ref>''[[Transformers Armada: The Awakening]]'' DK Readers book.</ref>. But the closest specific characters to the Generation 1 Seekers are this universe's own [[Starscream (Armada)|Starscream]]/[[Thundercracker (Armada)|Thundercracker]]/[[Skywarp (Armada)|Skywarp]] trio. All three even used the same toy mold in their first release, although Skywarp was heavily [[Retool|retooled]] from the others (including getting an entirely new-mold [[Mini-Con]] partner). While new Decepticon-allied jet characters named [[Thrust (Armada)|Thrust]] and [[Ramjet (Armada)|Ramjet]] were released in ''Armada'', they each had their own unique molds. However, whereas Ramjet was simply the Mini-Con partner of [[Tidal Wave (Armada)|Tidal Wave]], Thrust was a [[bulk]] who even had a VTOL engine in jet mode, a conehead and vertically-oriented wings in robot mode. Although Thrust's original toy was green, redecos looked a bit more like his G1 incarnation. It was also redecoed into ''[[Transformers: Universe (2003 franchise)|Universe]]'' [[Sunstorm (Universe)|Sunstorm]].

Though only Starscream appeared in the follow-up franchise, ''[[Transformers: Energon (franchise)|Energon]]'', several Seekers appeared in the final portion of the Unicron Trilogy, ''[[Transformers: Cybertron (franchise)|Cybertron]]''. Starscream was back in a form heavily inspired by ''[[Transformers: The War Within|The War Within]]'' Starscream design (itself based on the "tetrajet" (see below)), while Thundercracker received a completely different body. A Skywarp was also released as a redeco of Thundercracker.

Further, the ''[[Legends Class|Legends of Cybertron]]'' Starscream toy, a tiny, simplified version of his main toy, was redecoed three more times: [[Skywarp (Armada)|Skywarp]] as a giveaway at [[ComicCon 2005]], [[Ramjet (Universe)|Ramjet]] as a giveaway at [[BotCon 2005]], and [[Sunstorm (LOC)|Sunstorm]] as part of the last wave of the LOC line at retail.

==Live-action movie franchise Seekers==

In the letters page for [[Transformers (Titan Magazine)|Titan's tie-in comic]], the movie versions of [[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream]], [[Thundercracker (Movie)|Thundercracker]], and [[Ramjet (Movie)|Ramjet]] were first referred to as Seekers—by Starscream himself, no less. [[Dreadwing (Movie)|Dreadwing]] was noticeably absent from Starscream's list, despite also being a jet and Thundercracker also being the name/body for a line of drones. The term was used twice in IDW movie comics, meaning different things—[[Seeker (Movie)|Starscream's crack unit]], and [[Seeker (ROTF)|ancient spacefaring Transformers]].

In the [[Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (film)|movie sequel]], Jetfire describes himself as a Seeker. The Seekers were a pre-existing group long before the formation of the Decepticons. There is some indication that the Seekers are an elite group of the best of the best fliers, although what (if anything) distinguishes a Seeker from any other flying Transformer is open to question. They tend to mostly, though not always, share a common design.

In an effort to placate the eternally fueding cities of [[Vos]] and [[Tarn]] each was given something of value. Vos thus became the home of the [[Air Commander|Cybertronian Air Command]] home base of the Seekers. [[Starscream (Prime)|Starscream]] was one of their leaders before the war, and [[Autobot High Council|High Councilor]] [[Contrail]] seems to have been another. The Seekers were employed in ancient times to guard the secret of [[Dark Energon]] hidden aboard [[Trypticon (Prime)|Trypticon Station]]. They kept this charge even when Starscream allied with the Decepticons, though for the most part they remained largely independent in the civil war.

[[Shockwave (WFC)|Shockwave]], apparently upset at being pulled away from the [[Crystal City]], manuvered Vos and Tarn into destroying each other, wiping out most of the Air Commanders that formed the basis of Starscream's power and bolstering his own position as Second-in-command.

In the aftermath of this betrayal, many of the surviving Seekers from Vos joined the Autobots, becoming the [[Aerialbot (WFC)|Aerialbot]]s. [[Jetfire (WFC)|Jetfire]] was one notable Seeker who defected from the Decepticons to the Autobots, helping them exploit their own flight skills further.

Although "Seeker" is the most well-known name for these Decepticons, the reason for its wide use is a bit of a mystery.

There are only two known official uses of the term in 20th century, both of them in department-store advertisements from the [[1984]] holiday season. The J.C. Penney catalog (sometimes called a "wishbook") featured a page dedicated to ''[[Transformers brand|Transformers]]'' that included this statement in its description of Starscream: "Airplane with sensational F-15 styling scours the countryside searching for Autobots. When they're found, the Seekers set out to destroy them." It also said [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] "sends out messages to the Seekers and other Decepticons".<ref>J.C. Penney 1984 wishbook [[:Image:Seekers ad.jpg|(full-page scan)]]</ref> Additionally, the now-defunct discount retail chain Zayre put out an ad in November 1984 listing Starscream and either Thundercracker or Skywarp as "Decepticon Seeker".<ref name="savead">Zayre 1984 ad [http://pleasesavemerobots.com/vstp/vstptf84.html (scan at The Vintage Space Toaster Palace)]</ref>

Some fans interpret those two seemingly-unrelated instances to mean that the capitalized term "Seeker" was handed down by [[Hasbro]] in promotional materials, and those retailers happened to run with it. It's impossible to know one way or the other with any certainty, but the most curious aspect is that the online ''Transformers'' fan community was already using the word in the early '90s, when the [[fandom]] was just getting on its feet. Were those obscure toy ads strong enough in the fandom's collective memory to determine common parlance almost ten years after the fact? Or were there more official usages that have since disappeared?

Even the '90s-era fandom didn't know where the term had come from, as evidenced by confused conversations from that time on [[alt.toys.transformers]].<ref>[http://groups.google.com/group/alt.toys.transformers/browse_frm/thread/e885ffdf4355e933/13eeeeae7e2483b7?tvc=17 alt.toys.transformers thread from 1996 about the origin of "Seeker"]</ref> While no one cited those toy ads, there were plenty of ''wrong'' answers, which may explain the term's staying power. The strongest of those erroneous explanations was that it had come from the phrase "[[Ferak|hunter-seeker skyship]]" used in [[The Smelting Pool!|issue 17]] of the [[The Transformers (Marvel comic)|Marvel US comic]]. However, the Decepticons it is applied to are shown only in their flight modes, which look nothing like the jets in question. In fact, the Coneheads make their first appearance in the same issue, and their Cybertronian flight modes appear very similar to their [[Earth]] jet forms (if not completely identical), and completely ''different'' from the craft which are referred to as hunter-seekers. The only real connection between the hunter-seekers we were shown and the "Seekers" is that there's more than one of them and they fly.

During this phase of questionable canonicity, fans flirted with other terms such as "Skyraider" ''(see [[#Alternate terms|below]])'', but in 2002 [[Simon Furman]] used "Seeker" in a Dreamwave comic script, which sealed the deal of officiality and set the tone not just for the fandom, but for the ''Transformers'' fiction that came afterwards as well.

The most obvious alternate name for these Transformers—and the one generally used by toy [[Pack-in material|pack-in]] [[catalog]]s—is '''[[Decepticon Planes]]'''. While usually clear enough from context, this term has the weakness that there are many Decepticon planes who do not share this body-type. Also, the term is rarely, if ever, used outside of toy-specific contexts. Within the fiction, the [[The Transformers (cartoon)|cartoon]] episode "[[Atlantis, Arise!]]" features [[Brawn (G1)|Brawn]] calling Thundercracker a '''Deceptijet'''. And the 1985 audio book "[[Sun Raid]]" has Megatron ordering the '''Deceptiplanes''' (Starscream, Skywarp and Thundercracker) to break off an attack. For a long time, it has been common among fans to refer to the Seekers' cartoon Cybertronian forms (from the episode "[[More than Meets the Eye, Part 1]]" among others) as '''tetrajets''' because their shape resembles a [[wikipedia:tetrahedron|tetrahedron]], a pyramid with a triangular base.

They were the peaceful creators of the beautiful [[Crystal City]] on [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], and Omega was both its guardian and their friend. However, Megatron secretly used the [[Robo-Smasher]] to reprogram the Constructicons into Decepticons, then he had them send Omega away on a fool's errand so they could demolish Crystal City.

As they wrestled with Omega in their combined form, the Robo-Smasher latched onto Omega Supreme's head. Omega was able to fend off both his attackers, but his mental brush with the Robo-Smasher left him filled only with hate for the Constructicons, whom he pursued across the galaxy for millions of years. In 1984, the Constructicons bolstered Megatron's forces on Earth (and Megatron referred to "the time we spent building them in these caverns," adding to the origin ambiguities). Scrapper designed a machine to transfer the other Decepticons' offensive powers to Megatron. While Megatron battled [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Optimus Prime]], holding the attention of the Autobots, the Constructicons invaded the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]] to destroy [[Teletraan I (G1)|Teletraan I]]. Unfortunately for them, the Ark was protected by the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobots]], but by merging into Devastator, they became more than a match for their prehistoric foes. The return of the other Autobots and the discovery of Megatron's deception spelled the end of the battle, however. Regardless, the team was soon back at work again, performing such varied tasks as assisting in Megatron's reconstruction of [[New York City]] (which also involved turning Optimus Prime's scrapped remains into a [[Alligatorcon|robotic alligator]]) {{storylink|City of Steel}} and building [[Transfixatron|a device to paralyze Transformers in their vehicular modes]], as well as another to crush them. {{storylink|The Autobot Run}}

The Constructicons' history of mental manipulation continued when the Autobots planted [[dominator disc]]s on them, which the Autobots activated when the Constructicons merged into Devastator. He instantly began fighting against the Decepticons, and Autobots took him back to their base. However, Megatron was secretly aware of the whole plot, even spying on the Autobots ''through the Constructicons' own eyes.'' Meanwhile, the Constructicons contentedly helped fix the battle-damaged Autobots and then accompanied them on a raid against the Decepticons, who were trying to drill into the Earth's core. During the battle, Megatron used a "control switch" to deactivate the discs, and as Devastator turned back against the Autobots, Wheeljack boosted the discs' power. This drove Devastator mad, and he began attacking everyone indiscriminately. The only thing that brought him back to sanity was the threat of the Decepticons' drill, which was seconds away from destroying the planet. He dove into the drilled hole and wrenched the bit to a standstill, saving the world. {{storylink|The Core}}

Afterwards, the Constructicons returned to their Decepticon roles, but treachery remained a running theme. Upon learning of the Autobot [[Grapple]]'s solar power tower design, Scrapper and the Constructicons pretended to have defected from the Decepticons in order to help him and [[Hoist (G1)|Hoist]] construct it. But upon its completion, they turned it and the two Autobots over to Megatron. In a demonstration of Scrapper's motto, Grapple and Hoist were imprisoned in the very structure of their tower. {{storylink|The Master Builders}}

Later, when the other Decepticons began to suffer from [[Cybertonium]] degeneration, the Constructicons, apparently working fine, took delivery of a shipment of the mineral via the [[Space Bridge]], and as Devastator, failed to stop [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Spike]] and [[Carly]] from getting by them and traveling to Cybertron. {{storylink|Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 1}}

When Omega Supreme learned that the Constructicons were active on Earth, he arrived on the planet and joined Optimus Prime's forces, biding his time until he could face his former friends again. That chance arose when the Constructicons were discovered mining an asteroid, and Omega was dispatched to investigate. Ignoring Optimus Prime's orders, Omega Supreme engaged the Constructicons, and in the battle, split the asteroid in two, revealing that it was an egg of sorts, incubating a monstrous alien creature, which promptly attacked [[San Francisco]] while Omega, ignoring the plight of the city, continued to battle the Constructicons. Optimus Prime then entered the fray, convincing Omega that saving the city was more important than revenge, and forcing the Constructicons to retreat. {{storylink|The Secret of Omega Supreme}}

The building skills of the Constructicons remained in demand; other creations around this time included an army of drone Transformers created from common Earth cars; {{storylink|Make Tracks}} various constructs for [[Blitzwing (G1)|Blitzwing]], including a throne constructed from deactivated Autobots and a massive maze; {{storylink|Triple Takeover}} and a giant ruby-powered laser cannon. {{storylink|Masquerade}} It's unclear how unique their combining ability actually was (especially if Devastator had been around since the [[Golden Age]]), but their gestalt-monopoly on Earth was undone with the creation of the [[Stunticon (G1)|Stunticons]] and their Autobot counterparts, the [[Aerialbot (G1)|Aerialbots]]. These were soon followed by the [[Protectobot (G1)|Protectobots]] and [[Combaticon (G1)|Combaticons]], the latter even defeating Devastator in battle as their merged form, [[Bruticus (G1)|Bruticus]]. {{storylink|Starscream's Brigade}}

Still, twenty years later in the Earth year 2005, Devastator was the Decepticons' primary weapon in the great [[Battle of Autobot City]], tearing through the defenses and walls of the city and battling the Dinobots once more. On the return trip to Cybertron, it was Bonecrusher who advocated the "survival of the fittest" policy that saw many wounded Decepticons ejected from the shuttle, among them Megatron, prompting Scrapper to vote for the Constructicons as the new leaders of the Decepticons, arguing that Devastator was the most powerful robot. Hook took great offense to the notion that [[Soundwave (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Soundwave]] would make a better leader than them. In the end, [[Starscream (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Starscream]] became the new leader of the Decepticons, and the Constructicons, as a sign of no hard feelings, provided the music by playing horns at his coronation. Starscream, desperate to get on with the ceremony, eventually shot their horns, showing that he still had hard feelings. In the remainder of this year and throughout 2006, the Constructicons maintained a smaller, but still present, role in the Decepticon army, lending their talents to the Decepticon/[[Quintesson]] alliance by constructing [[Trypticon (G1)|Trypticon]] out of a populated human city in only one night. {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4|FFOD, Part 4}} Later, they built a planetary engine on an asteroid and battled on the planet [[Eurythma]], {{storylink|Carnage in C-Minor}} aided in the overthrow of [[Paradron]] {{storylink|Fight or Flee}} and took part in an attack on [[Japan]]. {{storylink|The Burden Hardest to Bear}} Although brief, the Constructicons even played a part in the battle for the [[Plasma Energy Chamber]] in 2007, seen firing on Autobots with the [[Terrorcon (G1)|Terrorcons]]. {{storylink|The Rebirth, Part 3}}

As seen above, the cartoon presented several conflicting origins for the Constructicons. The series bible described the Constructicons as having "no explained origin",<ref>[http://transformers.winterchill.com/bible/biblepage57.html Cartoon series bible page on the Constructicons]</ref> but this only seemed to promote variant portrayals.

A straight reading of the "facts" appears to go: the Constructicons started out Decepticons, built Megatron, left the Decepticons, built the Crystal City, were Robo-Smashed back into Decepticons, ran around the galaxy for umpteen million years, ended up on Earth, and were (re)built by Megatron. However, there are issues with that narrative:

*There was no hint in Omega's flashback that they had ever been Decepticons before; their treachery was entirely unexpected. On the other hand, they ''did'' have Decepticon symbols throughout. Another possibility is that the Constructicons had built Megatron without realizing how evil he would be, which allows their early insignia to be chalked up as the animation error they most likely are.
*Even if Megatron's claim of "building" them just means "rebuilding", their Crystal City flashback showed them anachronistically ''already'' in their Terran vehicle forms, so what would he have rebuilt them into? On the other hand, that's just one more reason to doubt the veracity of Omega's flashback.

Making the issue either simpler or more complicated, depending on your view, the [[Wikipedia:Unreliable narrator|unreliable narrator]] rationale could negate much of the Constructicons' supposed history, between the vengeance-driven Omega's tale and the tripping Rodimus' near-death mystical vision. But the real-world truth of the matter is that different writers and haphazard animators gave us a mix of possibilities with no clear [[canon]] answer.

This eventually meant that Devastator was too far away to be protected by Optimus Prime's [[Matrix of Leadership|Matrix]]-constructed shields when the nuclear missiles finally struck. As the battered Decepticons fled Earth, the Constructicons seemed to have been left behind. Two years later, Scrapper joined a few other Decepticons trying to get off the planet {{storylink|New Arrivals, Old Encounters}}, while Scavenger was targeted for capture by [[Skywatch]] and the Autobots. {{storylink|The Hanging Sword}} He managed to stay hidden and think of a plan to get out of the country. {{storylink|The Impossible Knot}} Unlike Scavenger, Hook and Mixmaster ended up captured by Skywatch, but were rescued by Scrapper's group who had allied themselves with some rogue Autobots. {{storylink|A Rude Awakening}} The three reunited Constructicons then started building a starship for everyone to leave Earth with. [[Swindle (G1)|Swindle]] wanted to speed things up by collecting some more of the construction experts, but [[Hot Rod (G1)|Rodimus Prime]] refused as his Autobots feared that they might form Devastator again. {{storylink|Seasons in Flight}}

The Decepticons eventually betrayed the Autobots and tried to take the ship for themselves (with help from [[Menasor (G1)|Menasor]] instead of Devastator), but were defeated. Skywatch captured most of them, but several Constructicons got away. {{storylink|Earthworks}} Among them was Scrapper, but he was soon hunted down and executed by [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Spike Witwicky]], who was intent on ending the threat of Devastator forever. {{storylink|Scrapper (issue)|Scrapper}}

The Constructicons travelled with Scrapper's deactivated form and, despite his current state, were still able to combine and form Devastator, albeit with a dead limb. Devastator was still a force to be reckoned with, and so [[Sunstreaker (G1)|Sunstreaker]] armed his hoverchair with a copious amount of explosives, tricking Devastator into stepping on it. After a titanic blast, Devastator prepared to take revenge on the little Autobot when [[D-Void]] pulled him and the other Decepticons present into the mass of its "[[Deceptigod]]" construct. {{storylink|Chaos Part Three: Kings}}

The monster was defeated by Megatron, but the Decepticons were left weakened from the experience, and the Autobots soon captured and contained them. The Warlords had an acrimonious relationship with each other at best, but agreed to meet for War Councils to discuss the Decepticon movement and, particularly, the rising threat of the [[Autobot Elite Guard]] to all of them. He and [[Reflector (G1)|Reflector]], leader of the [[Photon]]s, carried a motion for the assembled Warlords to share their plans and information with each other, for the greater glory of the Decepticons.

Or, rather, for the greater glory of [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]]. By the next council meeting, Hook, Reflector and Megatron's representative [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] were no longer present, having united under Megatron's banner after claiming the Warlords' secrets. {{storylink|A Team Effort}}

A group of Constructicons worked for [[Deathsaurus (Victory)|Deathsaurus]] on the repairs of the [[Combaticon (G1)|Combaticon]]s. {{storylink|Battle Lines, Part 2}} Following Megatron's conquering of Deathsaurus's territory, Deathsaurus's [[Combiner]] technology was applied to Hook and his team to create Devastator, who joined in an attack on [[Iacon (polity)|Iacon]]. {{storylink|Battle Lines, Part 5}} The Autobots were able to take down Devastator using a combination of live cables and shooting him in the knees. {{Storylink|Battle Lines, Part 6}}
