Scourge
:Scourge is a Decepticon turned Autobot and the leader of Jungle Planet from the Cybertron portion of the Unicron Trilogy continuity family.

Scourge believes in survival of the fittest and the rule of the mightiest. Not coincidentally, he sees himself as the top of both these categories. A former student of the now-peaceful Backstop, he is savage and brutal, and now holds the Jungle Planet firmly in his steel jaws. Still, his sense of honor shows that somewhere beneath the exterior of the tyrant, some decency beats in his spark, it just needs to find a way out.

He also apparently looks up (rather down) to one of the humans, Lori; because even though she is small, she is brave enough to stand up to big old Scourge. And let's face it, she must have pretty big cojones to do that (despite, y'know, being a girl). Scourge refers to her as 'little sister'.

Long ago, Scourge was a student training under the tutelage of the wise Backstop. Frustrated by the lawlessness of his homeworld, as well as the weak rulers' lack of backbone in dealing with the many criminal elements that preyed upon the people of the land, Scourge turned his back on his master's teachings and waged a revolutionary war against the rulers of the land, with one message: bend to his will or be destroyed. Scourge's immense strength and force of arms saw him seize power over the Jungle Planet, but over time, his lofty ideal of bringing peace and safety to a chaotic land gave way to merely maintaining order under his iron fist. Honor

Years later, two strange beings dared enter the grounds of his temple. The leader, calling himself Megatron, claimed that he was in search of the Cyber Planet Keys, which could save the universe from a black hole left in the wake of some mythical god's destruction. Scourge was interested, but played dumb about the Key's location, seeing that Megatron had an ulterior motive. Search Soon afterwards, another (smaller) outlander arrived, telling much the same story as the Decepticons did, except claiming that Megatron had no intention of saving the universe. Unfortunately, his direct, gruff manner got under Scourge's skin and the Jungle Planet leader challenged the interloper to a battle for the Key. Race

In the ensuing fight, Scourge took a Cyber Key-powered missile to the face, but quickly revealed his own Key ability-shoulder-mounted dragon heads which laid Overhaul low with their ferocious fire breath. Scourge prepared the final blow, but his victim was spirited away by Snarl, causing Scourge to roar in fury. Overhaul soon returned once more, hell-bent on acquiring the Cyber Planet Key. Initially dismissive of the Autobot, Scourge charged into battle after Overhaul dealt with his guards. When his foe was distracted by Megatron's attack on Snarl, Scourge unleashed his flames once more, only to find that Overhaul could now withstand their heat. Fortunately for Scourge, Megatron chose that moment to toss Snarl into Overhaul, as a "gift" for him. Scourge would have executed the traitorous wolf on the spot, but Overhaul blocked his blow, drawing on the power of the Cyber Planet Key to reformat himself into Leobreaker and fleeing with Snarl. Detour (episode)

Bent on punishing Snarl's treachery, Scourge tracked down the wolf-bot, and had his first meeting with Optimus Prime. The naive Autobot leader wished to talk, but Scourge informed him of his planet's laws and suggested that Optimus battle Megatron's forces to determine Snarl's fate. Optimus refused on the spot, but Leobreaker was spurred into action when Scourge's minions moved to take Snarl away. Scourge observed the ensuing battle and witnessed Optimus and Leobreaker utterly defeat Megatron with their first combination into Savage Claw Mode. Satisfied with their display of power, he released Snarl and left. Savage

Having seen the strength of Optimus Prime, Scourge desired a battle against the Autobot leader. His wish was seemingly granted when Optimus contacted him with a challenge, but when the dragon-bot met him in a canyon, Optimus denied ever sending such a message. (In truth, the scheming Sideways was behind the message, intent on letting both sides destroy each other.) Nonetheless, Scourge battled Optimus, who struck him down with the power of Savage Claw Mode. Although the Autobots retreated before Scourge could recover, the planet leader was pleased to have felt Prime's strength first-hand. Sand

Scourge was one of the Transformers who felt the energy released by inserting the Velocitron Planet Key into the Omega Lock. Champion He witnessed the Autobots' return to his planet and watched them deal with Megatron's flunkiesIce before meeting them personally at his temple. To his dismay, Optimus still refused to fight him, intent on trying to talk the Key out of Scourge's hands. Ironically, Leobreaker shared Scourge's discontent for diplomacy, forcibly separating from Optimus and attacking the dragon. Scourge felled him with a single fire blast, but then stayed Megatron's hand when he moved to finish off the fallen warrior, claiming that Leobreaker was already defeated. Megatron was not terribly pleased by this, but relented and followed Scourge back to his temple.

Some time later, Scourge at last received a formal challenge from Optimus Prime, delivered by Backstop. Confused by Optimus' change of heart, he asked his old teacher what motivated the Autobot leader, learning that Optimus fought for peace and justice-familiar words to Scourge, according to Backstop. Although Megatron advised against the battle, Scourge was adamant, Honor and immediately began training by fighting off Undermine and Brimstone while restrained by two pillars. Having prepared himself for battle, he proceeded to wait for his opponent...and wait...and wait. To his dismay, the Autobots were late for the match, making him wonder if Optimus would try to intentionally dishonor him. Eventually, the Autobots did arrive, accusing Megatron's goons of delaying them. When Scourge turned to ask Megatron about this, the Decepticon simply denied everything and left.

Dismissing the issue, Scourge prepared to fight, but found himself confronted by Velocitronian leader Override and Lori, one of the Autobots' human allies. The latter attempted to explain the value of working together over fighting, but Scourge misinterpreted it as a slight against his planet's culture and insisted that the battle commence. However (perhaps motivated by Lori's words or simple arrogance), he did allow Optimus to choose one Autobot to aid him, and the Prime immediately combined with Leobreaker to meet Scourge head-on. Although the dragon forced the 'bots apart by attacking their combination joint, the Autobots reformed Savage Claw Mode on the other side and delivered a punch that laid Scourge out on the floor. He anticipated his own demise, but was surprised to learn that Optimus had no intent to kill him. Nonetheless, he accepted defeat and relinquished the Cyber Planet Key to the Autobots before leaving to contemplate what he had learned that day. Before doing so, he thanked Lori for her words, affectionately calling her "little sister"-much to Lori's dismay. Primal

When Megatron's forces attempted to raid the temple and steal the key, Scourge remained inside, claiming to have no interest in the larger war around him. He showed concern for Lori when she began coughing on smoke from the burning jungle outside, and was perplexed at her belief that bike helmets save lives. When Thundercracker repeatedly set the forests around the temple alight to keep Optimus occupied, Scourge took action, storming outside and downing the lowbrow jet with a blast of flames. He eventually found himself being examined by more humans as the Autobots regrouped, before finally losing his patience and screaming for everyone to just leave his planet. They at last agreed, and Scourge was left to tend to his realm. Trust (Cybertron)

However, the draconic dictator was soon flying on an asteroid alongside Crumplezone in order to free the Decepticons from a trap laid by the treacherous Starscream. Combining his power with Megatron's, Scourge eventually breached the sphere trapping the Decepticons, and then requested to join Megatron's group on their trip to Earth, in order to see new worlds and experience new things (and get vengeance on Optimus Prime and Leobreaker for his defeat). He greeted Optimus Prime upon arrival, and engaged Leobreaker and Snarl in battle, taking them both out in short order with his dragon mode's powerful fire breath. He briefly battled Optimus Prime before the latter was distracted by Megatron critically wounding three of his soldiers. Revelation (episode) He attempted to bar Optimus' path to Megatron, but was knocked aside by Savage Claw Mode. He soon got back on his feet and was poised to help Megatron finish off the Autobots when the wounded trio returned, reborn into the powerful Cybertron Defense Team. Critical

Scourge continued fighting the Autobots at Niagara Falls, but took a moment to fry Thundercracker for attempting to flee. He then joined Megatron in warping to Starscream's island base and joining a massive free-for-all for possession of the Omega Lock. When all of his opponents fled or challenged different enemies, Scourge decided to give chase to the Autobot leaders descending into the volcano at the island's center. Assault He was held up briefly by an electric trap redirected at him by Vector Prime, but recovered in time to squash Sideways underfoot. After another painful encounter with Savage Claw Mode's power, he evacuated the erupting volcano in time to witness Starscream emerge...as a twenty-story giant with an equally massive crown! When Megatron challenged Starscream in a clash that threatened to rip the planet in half (literally), Scourge led the Decepticons in a full-scale attack on Starscream. They got off one combined Cyber Key-enhanced shot before the super-sized jet blew them away. Starscream (episode)

When a team of Autobots left for Cybertron with the Omega Lock, Scourge alerted Megatron and joined the rest of the Decepticons in pursuing them. Along the way, he watched Megatron recruit Thunderblast into the Decepticons, although he was shortly informed that Megatron only trusted her as far as cannon fodder. United The Autobots escaped at a warped section of the space bridge, but Scourge was able to pass through by focusing his own power. Upon arriving on Cybertron, he mocked Thunderblast for being damaged along the way, but then doubled over from injuries HE sustained during the trip. When Megatron successfully stole the Lock, Scourge joined him in fleeing through a dimension gate, and thus witnessed his leader's battle with Optimus Prime in the fire dimension. He managed to escape with Thunderblast before the Autobots collapsed the dimension around Megatron, seemingly destroying the Decepticon leader. Cybertron (episode)

Regrouping with the other Decepticons, Scourge nominated himself as leader. Ransack, Crumplezone, and Thundercracker objected, but the dragon-bot easily defeated all three of them at once. He soon threw them back into battle against the Autobots before tackling Optimus Prime himself. The battle was briefly interrupted when everyone stopped to watch Starscream's (rather pathetic) attempt to destroy Primus. Scourge commented that Starscream had really lost his mind-and then used the distraction to attack Optimus again, restarting the fight. The battle did not go well for the Decepticons, but Scourge refused to back down, even when Thundercracker reported that Crumplezone had been maimed by Scrapmetal. Not even he was prepared for what came next-the appearance of a ghostly, darkness-shrouded Megatron above them all! Balance He continued fighting Optimus, to the Autobot leader's growing frustration, until Optimus finally broke off to engage the now-reborn Megatron and his new pet. Scourge was among the Decepticons making a break for the Omega Lock when the Autobots were disoriented by the collision of Optimus and Megatron's powers. Darkness (episode) He didn't get far before he had to confront the pursuing Autobots again Memory, battling various opponents across Cybertron Escape (episode).

After Megatron learned of Starscream's survival aboard the ancient starship Atlantis, and the location of the final Cyber Planet Key, Scourge and the other Decepticons began searching the cosmos for their leader's old rival. Thunderblast led them to the Atlantis, but it warped away before anyone else could board. However, Scourge still found his way to Gigantion with the help of the mysterious Soundwave, who led the Decepticons through a dimension gate. Titans Warp

The Decepticons' first clash on the Giant Planet went poorly, largely due to the presence of the enormous native Transformers on the Autobots' side. Scourge found himself overpowered by Quickmix and blown away by planet leader Metroplex, who also soundly defeated Megatron. Giant In the aftermath of the battle, Scourge helped his leader hobble down the corridors of the planet, trying to offer comfort by claiming that everyone loses a battle sometime. He later assured Crumplezone and Ransack that Megatron's near-tangible anger was not directed at them, but rather at the ones who so easily outmatched his power. He soon saw his leader literally rip open Gigantion to access its Cyber Planet Key and followed the newly-minted Galvatron as he devastated the Autobots around the planet. He then witnessed his leader's vengeance on Metroplex and battle with Optimus Prime, and again fell back after Galvatron was injured by Metroplex's axe. Fury

Upon recovering his strength, Galvatron sent his forces-Scourge included-across the planet to find the Cyber Planet Key. City Scourge and Thunderblast attempted to ambush Wing Saber, Override, and Lori, only for the latter to give Scourge a severe lecture about the dishonor of his sneak attack (and fighting for Megatron in general). The dragon actually seemed to be rather shaken by the girl's rant, and was noticeably relieved when she left with Wing Saber to take on Thunderblast. Scourge was much more confident during his battle with Override, but when his thrown axe nearly killed Lori and the returning Wing Saber, he quickly made a strategic withdrawal (while Lori berated him for running away). Ambush

Scourge next surfaced in another of Gigantion's abandoned cities, where he was confronted by Leobreaker and Snarl. The beast-bots attempted to sway him from Megatron's side by claiming that Optimus fought for the right reasons, but Scourge replied that Optimus only fought for change, not improvement. His patience wearing thin, Leobreaker angrily challenged Scourge for leadership of Jungle Planet, claiming that Scourge's selfishness made him unfit to rule. The fight was intense, but Scourge emerged triumphant. As the dragon prepared to leave, Snarl informed him of the Jungle Planet's suffering due to the black hole, but Scourge revealed that he already knew that, having the same connection to his homeworld as Snarl did. Infuriated by Scourge's demeanour, Snarl joined Leobreaker in attacking, but Scourge defeated them both and left to contemplate his growing feelings of unease about the situation. Challenge

Reflecting on Leobreaker's insistence that strength was more than physical, Scourge began feeling both confused and apprehensive, as physical power was all he had to save his planet. His wanderings led him to an old amusement park, where he came across Bud and the Recon Mini-Con Team. The small human was able to have a discussion with Scourge, attempting to illustrate the benefits of creative thinking and teamwork, making Scourge accuse Bud of making things up. When Bud responded that no one said that he couldn't make stuff up, Scourge finally had an epiphany, realizing that his constant reliance on brute strength had actually made him weaker. To test his realization, he promptly challenged the Autobots to a duel. He was beaten up by Metroplex, Vector Prime, and Sonic Wing Mode Optimus Prime without doing anything to any of them besides slightly scratching the latter's shoulder, but still expressed contentment at the result, laughing softly at the sky above him. Scourge (episode)

When the completed Omega Lock opened a path back to the Transformer's home dimension, Scourge arrived to thank Optimus Prime for everything he taught him. Declaring that he had a planet to save, Scourge proceeded to depart for the Jungle Planet, accompanied by his old friend, Snarl. Showdown Unfortunately, the power of the black hole was unstoppable, dragging the Jungle Planet itself through the space bridge and into reach of the singularity itself. Even as his people were evacuated by the Autobots, Scourge intended to die with his homeworld, forcing Snarl to beat some sense into him. Accused of cowardice and giving up on his people, Scourge at last realized the lesson Backstop tried to teach him so long ago, and told his followers to never give up hope and always go down fighting. As his old teacher looked at him with pride, Scourge found himself bathed in the light of Primus as his temple rose from the ground and revealed itself as the fourth ancient starship: Hyperborea! Aboard this mighty vessel, he arrived at Primus in time to scare off Galvatron's minions and witness the creation of the Ark, a symbol of the united Transformer race. Homecoming (episode)

When Galvatron retreated to the very core of the black hole, Scourge and the other planet leaders approached Optimus Prime, wishing to aid him in defeating Galvatron and reclaiming the key-filled Omega Lock. Although Galvatron used the Lock to make himself enormous and all-powerful, the combined strength of the Autobots defeated him, with Scourge contributing his flames to their final attack. Spiteful even in defeat, Galvatron threw the Lock and keys into the black hole, and Scourge was forced to break off and grab his homeworld's Cyber Planet Key. He beheld Primus' destruction of the black hole at last and then watched the deity reform into Cybertron, now with elements of the Jungle Planet on its surface.End

Unfortunately, Jungle Planet itself was still out of place, hovering just above Cybertron. The Autobots worked together to build massive thrusters to push the planet back to its rightful place, and Scourge made sure to thank Optimus once more for all he had done. The plan proceeded without a hitch until Galvatron damaged one of the engines (en route to a final battle with Optimus Prime), changing the planet's trajectory towards Cybertron. When the damaged thruster began falling over, Scourge was the first Transformer to leap up and try to physically push it back into place. With the combined aid of Transformers from all over the galaxy, he succeeded, allowing his planet-and his people-to return home. Unfinished

Weeks after the final defeat of Galvatron and the restoration of normalcy, Scourge joined the other planet leaders in an "intergalactic peace conference", where it was decided that a new space bridge project would be made. In preparation for the project, Scourge held a boxing match on Jungle Planet to determine its new leader...and ended up winning. As a result, he sent Leobreaker as the Jungle Planet representative. Scourge would later attempt (rather poorly) to hide his tears at Leobreaker's departure.

Despite his enlightened stance on power, Scourge still seemed to enjoy physical tests, such as lifting very large boulders. Beginning

Beginning

Beginning
*Optimus Prime (2001)

: When in his Super Mode. Robots in Disguise Optimus Prime has a little door on his chest that opens to reveal a sculpted, non-removable Matrix. In Japanese fiction, this was not the Matrix of Leadership, but rather a mere Energon Matrix, the like of which had been seen in toy form before with Lio Convoy and Big Convoy. Despite what the intent of the toy may have been, though, the cartoon relegated this sculpted detail to the role of a simple power intake socket, while the Matrix (in both Car Robots and Robots in Disguise) was never shown to have physical form.

:The Matrix remained when Prime was redecoed for the Universe (see below) and Cybertron (below again) toylines, and was also present in both the exclusive Clear and Black versions of the figure available in Japan... but being Japanese figures, that technically means it's not the Matrix of Leadership on them!
*Galvatron II (2005)

:The first true Matrix of Leadership toy was a silver die-cast metal accessory which came with Takara's "New Year Special" reissue of the original Generation 1 Optimus Prime figure. The Matrix came with a removable chain that allowed it to be looped around the head of Prime or any other figure you chose to give it to, and when flipped upside-down, it could also clip over the Diaclone-holdover cockpit seats inside Prime's opening chest compartment.

:This Matrix was redecoed in gold for inclusion with Takara's 2005 reissue of the original Galvatron toy, and in green (specifically representing its appearance as the Creation Matrix in the Marvel Comics series) for the e-Hobby exclusive Galvatron II redeco. Years later, the original silver version of the Matrix was included as part of the "Rodimus vs. Cyclonus" set in the 2010 Transformers toyline (see below).

:The large version of Armada Optimus Prime has a non-removable Matrix of Leadership hidden behind the flip-down grill on his chest. This feature was kept for the various redecos of this mold, gaining a blue center for Prime's "Powerlinx" redeco, and being entirely chromed when the figure got the gold chrome treatment as a Lucky Draw figure. Some further coloration changes were made when the figure was redecoed during the Energon toyline (see below).

:Although this mold was never redecoed into Nemesis Prime, the Linkage mini-comics exploited the two characters' physical similarity to essentially repurpose this Matrix into the Doomstone.
:A chromed Matrix accessory came with Hasbro's 20th Anniversary and Takara's Masterpiece edition of Optimus Prime, consisting of a translucent blue "crystal" centre surrounded by two shell-halves that could be pulled open. The Matrix stored in an opening chamber in Prime's chest, where its centre could be illuminated by a blue LED light built into the compartment. In order to fit into Prime's chest, however, the Matrix wound up being rather small, leaving Prime only able to wrap two of his fingers through its handles, instead of his whole hands.

:The Matrix was included with every reissue and redeco of the Prime mold, remaining in its normal colors when it came with Ultra Magnus, and the "Perfect Edition", "Sleep Mode" and "Final Edition" versions of Prime himself. When Prime was chromed entirely gold as a Lucky Draw figure, though, the Matrix was likewise blinged out, while the Matrix included with the "Black Version" of Prime, representing an Eldedroid, was chromed purple where the original was gold, and had a red translucent centre, illuminated by the figure's new red LED. A non-chromed version of the Matrix was included with Hasbro's "DVD Edition" of the figure as part of the Classics line (see below).
The Matrix stores in a chamber in Rodimus's abdomen, but is so small (smaller even relatively to Rodimus that Optimus's Matrix was to him) that Rodimus can't hold it by its handles at all.
:Robots in Disguise Optimus Prime was slightly redecoed for inclusion in this Costo-exclusive two-pack with Robots in Disguise Ultra Magnus, which saw the two toys recast as versions of Cybertrons own Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus characters, rather than the Robots in Disguise originals. The mold still sports its sculpted Matrix detail, though for this release the paint applications that surrounded it were changed from orange to black (this being the only change from the original figure). It's not impossible that this might actually not have represented the Matrix of Leadership on this figure, but instead the Spark of Combination, which the set's packaging mentions as the source of the brothers' combining power—but we include it here to be thorough!
*Galaxy Convoy (2005)
: Part of Takara's short Hybrid Style series of small-scale, highly-articulated figures, this version of Cybertron Optimus Prime came with a really tiny removable Matrix that stored in its customary position within the toy's chest. It was somewhat more show-accurate sculpt than the Matrix included with the full-size Cybertron Prime figure, and was colored with metallic paint as opposed to the larger figure's mostly-unpainted accessory.

: The Hybrid Style version of Generation 1 Optimus Prime also comes with a super-tiny Matrix, not much bigger than a large drug capsule, which fits in the traditional opening compartment within Prime's chest. Like the Hybrid Style Cybertron Prime before it, the figure comes with an assortment of alternate hands, but unlike its predecessor, it includes a pair specifically designed to hold the Matrix. Due to the small size of the figure, they do not figure articulated fingers to grip it, but instead are cast in the shape of clenched fists with grooves cut into the outside of the fingers into which the Matrix can slot.

:The Matrix was also included with Prime's later "Black Version" redeco, without changes.
: While the Revenge of the Fallen movie may have left the fate of the live-action Matrix up in the air, the Transformers Voyager Class Battle Blades Optimus Prime figure follows through on the intention evident in several of the film's adaptations by including it as an accessory stored within his body. Specifically, this removable Matrix attaches to a translucent blue plate hidden in Prime's midriff, which rotates up into place when his chest is opened and a panel on his abdomen is folded down. The Matrix is unpainted grey plastic on the Hasbro release of the figure; the TakaraTomy edition of Battle Blades Prime gives it coat of silver paint.

: The die-cast metal Matrix originally released by TakaraTomy with several of their Generation 1 reissues (see above) received its first Hasbro release in this box set of redecos of Classics Rodimus and Universe Cyclonus, released under the Reveal the Shield subline imprint. The Matrix itself is back in its original silver coloration. Unfortunately, the figures can't actually interact with the accessory in any way: Neither Rodimus nor Cyclonus can actually hold the Matrix, and it can't even hang from their necks since it does not include the removable chain that came with the various Takara editions.

The term Seeker refers to Decepticon jet troopers who share Starscream's body-type but with different colors or minor variations in wing and head shapes. This is most clearly and commonly known from Generation 1, but any franchise with a Starscream is almost inevitably going to feature a similar "family" of redecoed jet-formers.

The word "Seeker" hovered a long time in a strange gray area between official and fan-coined terms. It seems to have originated in extremely obscure official or semi-official writing, but somehow became widely used among fans. (See below.) In 2002, the term appeared in dialog from the first issue of The War Within from Dreamwave Productions, making it truly official after years of controversy. It has subsequently appeared in many other places such as on toy packaging, books, and in other stories.

Generation 1 Seekers
Originals
In Generation 1, there were six Seekers originally given names and characterization: Starscream, Skywarp, Thundercracker, Thrust, Dirge, and Ramjet. The first three, the season one Seekers, had animation designs done primarily by Shōhei Kohara.

Coneheads
The last three Generation 1 Seekers are usually designated as "Conehead" Seekers by fans for their distinctive transformation that leaves the jet nosecone pointing up. The animation models for the Conehead Seekers were designed by Floro Dery.

Skyraiders
The term "Skyraiders" (see alternate terms) was assigned to the prototypical Starscream-like air warriors that Skyquake developed at the very beginning of the war. The ranks of the Skyraiders did not seem to include any of the usual Seekers, but instead comprised other flying Decepticon characters. In addition to Skyquake himself, the Skyraiders were Leozack, Hellbat, Hooligan, and Guyhawk.

And all the rest
In the Generation 1 cartoon there were large numbers of generic, unnamed Seekers in addition to the named characters. They came in a wide variety of colors, from extra duplicates of Starscream or one of the other named guys, to original and distinct looks all their own. They seem to have formed the bulk of the Decepticon forces on Cybertron, as well as among Megatron's initial troops on Earth. They gradually became less common, perhaps as a result of casualties... or the cartoon's production team becoming more careful, or more-likely having more "actual" Decepticons to work with as the toy line expanded. (Extra Reflector units and alternate color cassettes were also used along with these Seekers, early on, to fill out the comparatively thin Decepticon ranks.)

These unsung Seekers would be recognized years later in Heroes of Cybertron toy form as the Air Warriors (all using the common lavender/white color scheme). Soon afterward, the Dreamwave Generation One comic series introduced an army of similarly-colored Seeker drones.

Around the same time, another background Seeker was also given a new life through toys and Dreamwave comics: Sunstorm. This yellow-orange Seeker was a nameless background character in the first episode of the Transformers cartoon, until e-Hobby turned him into an exclusive toy (available with an Autobot also based on a first-episode cameo). Now Hasbro can't get enough of him. Another generic Seeker was given attention: Acid Storm. Like Sunstorm before him, he was based on one of the background Seekers from the original cartoon, in this case the episode "Divide and Conquer" (see below).

Unnamed Seekers with their own distinct color schemes appear in the following episodes as noted below:
* "More than Meets the Eye, Part 1"
:In the "return to Iacon" scene on Cybertron, five to seven Seekers appear (wide shots depict a group of five, but the close-ups give us seven distinct color schemes.) The first three are (as far as colors are concerned) Skywarp, Starscream (with a deeper voice), and Thundercracker. In a following shot, we see a lavender Seeker with a flamethrower pack, a medium-blue Seeker with white trim, holding his arm gun like a rifle, a yellow/orange Seeker who would become Sunstorm... and lurking in the back, a very dark-blue Seeker with white trim barely visible, but there if you look.
At least six different Seekers of various shades and decos of blue and at least four of various shades and decos of lavender (two with black tail fins in jet mode, two with white). Also, a blue variant (seen in the picture above) missing his wings and shoulder vents appears in "Part 3".
: Avert your eyes! One deep blue, one eye-burning bright green, and one garishly bright yellow. This trio is often referred to by fans as "the Rainmakers" because they started an acid rain shower to irritate a group of Autobots. The green jet in this grouping was made into the Universe Acid Storm character, whose name was initially supposed to be "Rainmaker", then "Acid Rain".

* Project Brain Drain
: While Ramjet, Thrust and Dirge are named and Skywarp is identifiable, there are numerous unnamed Seekers including a second individual with Thrust-style wings.
Unicron Trilogy Seekers
According to one minor source in Armada, when any Transformer converts to a jet, he is called a "seeker". But the closest specific characters to the Generation 1 Seekers are this universe's own Starscream/Thundercracker/Skywarp trio. All three even used the same toy mold in their first release, although Skywarp was heavily retooled from the others (including getting an entirely new-mold Mini-Con partner). While new Decepticon-allied jet characters named Thrust and Ramjet were released in Armada, they each had their own unique molds. However, whereas Ramjet was simply the Mini-Con partner of Tidal Wave, Thrust was a bulk who even had a VTOL engine in jet mode, a conehead and vertically-oriented wings in robot mode. Although Thrust's original toy was green, redecos looked a bit more like his G1 incarnation. It was also redecoed into Universe Sunstorm.

Though only Starscream appeared in the follow-up franchise, Energon, several Seekers appeared in the final portion of the Unicron Trilogy, Cybertron. Starscream was back in a form heavily inspired by The War Within Starscream design (itself based on the "tetrajet" (see below)), while Thundercracker received a completely different body. A Skywarp was also released as a redeco of Thundercracker.

Further, the Legends of Cybertron Starscream toy, a tiny, simplified version of his main toy, was redecoed three more times: Skywarp as a giveaway at 2005, Ramjet as a giveaway at 2005, and Sunstorm as part of the last wave of the LOC line at retail.
Live-action movie franchise Seekers
In the letters page for Titan's tie-in comic, the movie versions of Starscream, Thundercracker, and Ramjet were first referred to as Seekers—by Starscream himself, no less. Dreadwing was noticeably absent from Starscream's list, despite also being a jet and Thundercracker also being the name/body for a line of drones. This left it unclear what a Seeker is. Transformers Comic issue 9
The Seekers were a pre-existing group long before the formation of the Decepticons. There is some indication that the Seekers are an elite group of the best of the best fliers, although what (if anything) distinguishes a Seeker from any other flying Transformer is open to question. They tend to mostly, though not always, share a common design.

In an effort to placate the eternally fueding cities of Vos and Tarn each was given something of value. Vos thus became the home of the Cybertronian Air Command home base of the Seekers. Starscream was one of their leaders before the war, and High Councilor Contrail seems to have been another. The Seekers were employed in ancient times to guard the secret of Dark Energon hidden aboard Trypticon Station. They kept this charge even when Starscream allied with the Decepticons, though for the most part they remained largely independent in the civil war.

Shockwave, apparently upset at being pulled away from the Crystal City, manuvered Vos and Tarn into destroying each other, wiping out most of the Air Commanders that formed the basis of Starscream's power and bolstering his own position as Second-in-command.

In the aftermath of this betrayal, many of the surviving Seekers from Vos joined the Autobots, becoming the Aerialbots. Jetfire was one notable Seeker who defected from the Decepticons to the Autobots, helping them exploit their own flight skills further.

As part of his power play with Starscream, Megatron sent gladiators to kill many of the Air Command's scientists to finally take control of Trypticon away from the Seekers. Transformers: Exodus
Origin of the term
Although "Seeker" is the most well-known name for these Decepticons, the reason for its wide use is a bit of a mystery.

There are only two known official uses of the term in 20th century, both of them in department-store advertisements from the 1984 holiday season. The J.C. Penney catalog (sometimes called a "wishbook") featured a page dedicated to Transformers that included this statement in its description of Starscream: "Airplane with sensational F-15 styling scours the countryside searching for Autobots. When they're found, the Seekers set out to destroy them." It also said Soundwave "sends out messages to the Seekers and other Decepticons". Additionally, the now-defunct discount retail chain Zayre put out an ad in November 1984 listing Starscream and either Thundercracker or Skywarp as "Decepticon Seeker".

Some fans interpret those two seemingly-unrelated instances to mean that the capitalized term "Seeker" was handed down by Hasbro in promotional materials, and those retailers happened to run with it. It's impossible to know one way or the other with any certainty, but the most curious aspect is that the online Transformers fan community was already using the word in the early '90s, when the fandom was just getting on its feet. Were those obscure toy ads strong enough in the fandom's collective memory to determine common parlance almost ten years after the fact? Or were there more official usages that have since disappeared?

Even the '90s-era fandom didn't know where the term had come from, as evidenced by confused conversations from that time on alt.toys.transformers. While no one cited those toy ads, there were plenty of wrong answers, which may explain the term's staying power. The strongest of those erroneous explanations was that it had come from the phrase "hunter-seeker skyship" used in issue 17 of the Marvel US comic. However, the Decepticons it is applied to are shown only in their flight modes, which look nothing like the jets in question. In fact, the Coneheads make their first appearance in the same issue, and their Cybertronian flight modes appear very similar to their Earth jet forms (if not completely identical), and completely different from the craft which are referred to as hunter-seekers. The only real connection between the hunter-seekers we were shown and the "Seekers" is that there's more than one of them and they fly.

During this phase of questionable canonicity, fans flirted with other terms such as "Skyraider" (see below), but in 2002 Simon Furman used "Seeker" in a Dreamwave comic script, which sealed the deal of officiality and set the tone not just for the fandom, but for the Transformers fiction that came afterwards as well.

Alternate terms
The most obvious alternate name for these Transformers—and the one generally used by toy pack-in catalogs—is Decepticon Planes. While usually clear enough from context, this term has the weakness that there are many Decepticon planes who do not share this body-type. Also, the term is rarely, if ever, used outside of toy-specific contexts. The first UK toy pack-in catalog referred to the group as strike planes. In Japan, they were called Jetrons.

Within the fiction, the cartoon episode "Atlantis, Arise!" features Brawn calling Thundercracker a Deceptijet. And the 1985 audio book "Sun Raid" has Megatron ordering the Deceptiplanes (Starscream, Skywarp and Thundercracker) to break off an attack. The audio book "Jaws of Terror" referred to them as "Decepticon superjets."

For a long time, it has been common among fans to refer to the Seekers' cartoon Cybertronian forms (from the episode "More than Meets the Eye, Part 1" among others) as tetrajets because their shape resembles a tetrahedron, a pyramid with a triangular base.

If there was ever an official term that could've given "Seeker" a run for its money, it was the one used on the European Generation 2 packaging of Starscream and Ramjet: Skyraiders. That term also appeared in those characters' profiles in the UK Generation 2 comic. When the modern fandom dug this information up, "Seeker" was still considered a fan-generated term, so there was a push to supplant it with "Skyraider". But Furman's use of "Seeker" in the then-current Dreamwave comics, coupled with the rediscovery of the J.C. Penney wishbook, put a damper on that movement. Some years later, the term "Skyraider" was officially resurrected to describe the jet warriors in the 2009 set "Wings of Honor" (based on the Energon Starscream mold). Skyquake was indicated as the body-type's developer.
:The original Seeker mold was the F-15 Diaclone design, noted for its detailed jet mode, extremely limited robot-mode articulation, and the need to remove/add many parts during transformation.

:The mold was initially decorated as Starscream, Skywarp and Thundercracker. In 1985, Ramjet, Dirge and Thrust were created out of this mold, each with unique new wing toolings and color schemes. Redecorated retools of the mold also appeared in Generation 2 as Starscream and Ramjet, featuring new accessory soundboxes.

:This mold subsequently has been extensively reissued and redecorated; see Starscream (G1) toys for a ridiculously long list of examples. *Generation 2 concept art revealed in the Transformers Vault book shows an unreleased desert camo variant on the Ramjet toy (previously seen in toy mock-up form) that would have been named Sandstorm.

*A mostly black and grey mock-up of Generation 2 Starscream was also seen from the same source as the Sandstorm mock-up. This toy has "Black Death" written on the nosecone and may perhaps have also been intended as a new character of that name.

*Another mock-up deco variant of the Starscream toy in jungle colors is also known to exist. As with "Black Death" Starscream and previously mentioned desert camo Ramjet, this may have been intended to be a new character.

*Lastly, another mock-up deco variant of the Ramjet toy in cloud camo is also known to exist. As with all the above mock-up decoes, this may have been intended to be a new character.

* The Transformers fandom has long mused upon the possibility of female Seekers (and produced countless self-insertion characters that are variants on the theme). A piece of Hasbro concept art of what appeared to be a female Seeker design appeared on the 2005-exclusive cover of Infiltration #0, but the idea didn't fully see fruition until Animated Slipstream, the first canonical female character to share a body template with a Starscream. This development is either great or horrible, depending on your perspective.
