When Savage/Noble first appeared, the creature was basically Megatron in disguise, his spark having been unexpectedly trapped in the organics he had sought to purge. It is unclear whether his seemingly random violent rages were genuine or if they were a deliberate ruse. Once he seemed to gain more self-control and began speaking, Noble claimed to be a survivor of the transformation lock virus in need of help, and so he was quickly accepted into the Maximal fold and befriended by Nightscream. After the Maximals led him to Megatron's Citadel, Megs made his move, and downloaded his spark into a Giant Warship. The discarded Savage/Noble entity was left a pure beast with an instinctual mind and no spark. Noble continued to follow Nightscream, helping where he could but also at times jeopardizing the team. The first time Megatron consumed all the sparks on Cybertron, the creature attacked him and he killed Noble. This sacrifice led to the enraged Nightscream stopping Megatron. The ill-fated creature was later mourned by the Maximals and praised for his sacrifice.
*Beast Changer (2001)
The Beast Changer toy was originally released in the West in 2001 as part of the Beast Machines toyline. Hasbro was unable to attain the rights to the name "Savage/Noble," and so it was given the generic Beast Changer label. In 2005, the mold was later recolored to appear somewhat more show-accurate and released in Japan under the name "Noble Savage" as part of the Beast Wars Returns toyline, exclusive to Toys R' Us.

*While "Savage" is clearly Megatron's Dragon half, it is unclear where the DNA for the wolf form "Noble" originated. Some fans have speculated a connection to Silverbolt's wolf fuzor form but nothing in the show particularly supports this.

*Given the Beast era's focus on a Transformer's life force and personality being bound up in its spark, it is questionable whether Savage/Noble, after losing its spark, was technically still a Transformer.

*Perhaps due to a lack of communication, the "Beast Changer" toy's on-package bio posits a micro-continuity where post-Megatron Savage/Noble is a sentient being with an intelligence Tech Spec of 8.7. He hates Megatron, is quoted as saying: "Science has yet to match the force of Nature - allow me to demonstrate!" and considers himself a "self-proclaimed" outcast.

*Although Savage/Noble's "Beast Changer" toy was not a part of it, a sub-line of other beast-to-beast Transformers was later released with the title Beast Wars Mutants.
This trauma influences much of his behavior. He's always on the defensive. Paranoid. Rude. Distrusting. Confrontational. But really, he's just a troubled kid, and he's been through a lot. Inside, he's got a good heart. He's just got to learn to stop fighting friends and enemies alike.
When the Vehicons and their virus struck, Nightscream ran and panicked like many Maximals. He fell down a hole during the attack, and everything went dark. Though he would not recall the details later, somehow he wandered into a cave bearing the fossils of a strange, gigantic bat-creature, and his internal DNA scanners used them to reformat him an organic beast form and save him, at least temporarily, from the virus. Nightscream's mental state at this point is unknown, but he seems to have spent the next period hiding and feeding off a strange fruit tree he found growing below the planet's surface. Eventually, Optimus Primal and company arrived and, distrustful, he began to spy on their activities. When they spotted and pursued him, the ensuing confrontation ended up with his food source destroyed and his body reformatted to be technorganic like the other Maximals. He rather reluctantly agreed to join them, but continued to generally mope around and cop an annoying Anakin-esque attitude with everyone.

In the course of events, Nightscream met and befriended Savage/Noble, whom he believed to be a fellow survivor of Megatron's attack. Thinking he'd found a kindred spirit, he dedicated himself to helping the wolf in dragon's clothing until it was revealed that his new friend was really Megatron all along. Despite this, when Megatron's spark separated from the Savage/Noble body, the dog-like beast that remained seemed to retain its attachment to the boy and followed him about like a big puppy. Then Megatron killed Savage/Noble, and the enraged Maximal unleashed his sonic powers on Megatron in retaliation, setting the stage for the final act of the war for the sparks. In the end, Nightscream and the other Maximals stopped Megatron's forces and reformatted the planet. And everyone rejoiced. Yay.
:Nightscream is a Maximal character from Beast Machines.

When armies of Vehicons seiged Cybertron, young Nightscream was cast into the darkness below the surface of the planet, and he was alone. His traumatizing solitude influences much of his behavior. He's always on the defensive. He lashes out. He's afraid. There are times he says mean things, or brings up the hurtful past when he should be courteously silent.

But he's just a kid, and he's been through a lot. Inside, he's got a good heart. He's just got to learn to stop fighting friends and enemies alike. He seems to have found a kindred spirit in the wild Savage/Noble creature.
Trivia
Story editor Bob Skir originally wanted the character of Nightscream to be a young female Transformer, patterned after the girl "Newt" from the movie Aliens. When the powers that be nixed that he instead pattered him after the rebellious young John Conner in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. In hindsight, maybe that wasn't the best idea...
