Payload

:Payload is a Decepticon and a type of mass-produced drone in the Movie continuity family.

Transforming into an exceptionally fast and powerful armored truck, Payload is the one the Decepticons rely on to procure the money and energy they need to function on Earth. Whatever they need, whereever they need it, in their quest for the All Spark it's Payload's job to get it to them, even if he has to smash right through Autobot lines to do it.

Both the Autobot and Decepticon armies make use of drones based on his design, which are heavily-armored, brutal melee fighters.

Sometimes there are lots of him.

On both sides.

Fiction
Prime Directives prequel comic
Payload was one of the Decepticons who took part in the Battle of Tyger Pax. He was also with Swindle during the interrogation of the surviving Autobot defenders. Prime Directives issue 1

Battle For the Allspark online game
Payload units of both sides have a strong defense, good attack, but poor speed. They are differentiated by little more than the make of their noggins; Autobot versions use a facemask-with-optics model, while Decepticons have a circular lens-face.

Transformers: The Game (console)
Payloads show up in Mission City to put the hurt on both Autobot and Decepticon alike. Their primary attack is an unstoppable running charge that can send even the likes of Optimus Prime and Megatron reeling. The only way to break them out of this attack is to nail them with a thrown object or melee attack when they briefly pause between charges.

Payloads also appear in the bonus Cybertron levels on both sides.

Aside from the aforementioned head differences, Decepticon Payloads are dark blue, while the Autobot versions are silver-white.

Transformers: Autobots/Decepticons
Payload's body frame has been shown in numerous forms: his Armored Truck mode, the Peace Van, the Moving Truck, the School Bus, the Ice Cream Truck, the Death Truck, the Funky Bus, the SWAT Van & the Prison Bus. Certain forms have either the Autobot head or the Decepticon head, but which game is unimportant; the same vehicle has the same head in both games.

Titan Magazines
In a timeline where the Decepticons won, Payload units are used in the occupation of Earth. They have no personality or higher consciousness, their dialogue being things like "Classification: Autobot. Identifying...".

Ironhide smashes them real good. Transformers Comic issue 10

: Payload transforms into a Bulldog II Armored Truck model based on the Decepticon-drone coloration and face type. In robot mode, his midsection has a large push-out grabber-claw that extends waaaaaaaaaaaaay far out. However, in order to do this, the claw-shaft sticks far out of his back in robot mode, making posing and display in narrow spaces difficult. It also makes him hard to balance.

: Several pieces on Payload tend to pop off easily: his brush guard, midriff-plate/claw-center, and even his upper shoulder/head assembly. The mold was later retooled to include larger pegs for the shoulder/head assembly and an added tab on the brushguard, to connect to the new slot in the claw plunger. While this was intended to give the pieces a better fit, it actually puts more pressure on the parts and causes them to pop off even easier. The chest piece, however, fits fairly well on either version but is still easy to remove.

: Payload's toy is very different from his video game version. Also, Payload has a tendency to sit on shelves for weeks, with some examples of end displays filled completely with Payload figures.

Merchandise
* Payload (3D Battle Card, 2007)

: In the Transformers 3D Battle Card Game, the Payload is on the Decepticon side. Pieces punched out from two different cards can be assembled to form a SWAT truck or a robot, while a third double-sided card gives its stats and attacks for each mode. He uses the same piece layout as Ratchet, though his lens-head peeking up over the back end of his vehicle mode looks less doofy than Ratchet's does.

Shelfwarmer is a colloquial term for a toy that either fails to sell well or is over-produced, leaving residual quantities on store shelves for months or even years after its original release, generally far in excess of other toys from the same waves.

The term is doubtless a reference to the theoretical lessening of potential heat rejection from a shelving unit covered with a layer of packaged products, as compared with a bare shelving unit. In other words, Perceptor, it's a joke. Alternately, it could be based on the sports term benchwarmer, referring to an athlete who very rarely enters the field of play, spending most of his time (you guessed it) warming the benches.

A related term is pegwarmer, used to refer to toys packaged on cards (which thereby hang on pegs), rather than in boxes.

On occasion, a toy that's considered rare and hard to find in the USA can very well end up as a shelfwarmer in other countries. Usually, this is due to the toy being only shipped to US stores in limited quantities, oftentimes even shortpacked, whereas European stores get those toys in solid cases (as in, cases only containing multiples of nothing but the same one or two toys).
When the live-action Transformers film was pushed back from November 2006 to July 2007, Hasbro needed to create a filler line to bridge the newly created gap in their product offerings. That bridge was a revisitation of the original Generation 1 characters, dubbed Classics.
Later, Mini-Cons which were originally meant for the end of the Cybertron line and Generation 1-inspired Legends redecoes were also added to expand the line further.

Although no original animation or full-length comic fiction is planned for the line, the Fun Publications Official Transformers Fan Club Magazine comic will be utilizing the Classics in their 2007 story-arc and setting them in a continuation of the old Generation 1 Marvel Comics universe, a splinter timeline from this universe that includes everything up until the end of the original Marvel run, but excludes the events of both the concurrent Marvel UK material and the Generation 2 book that followed, taking things in a new direction instead.

What counts as Classics?
The Classics toyline is a little tricky to define because some of the items which one would think belong to it—the Magnus/Skywarp two-pack, for instance, which redecoes two Classics figures—do not actually say "Classic" anywhere on their packaging. Even the toys that are definitely "real" Classics toys only have the word on one panel of their packaging as a prefix to their size class ("Classic Deluxe" or "Classic Voyager").

For simplicity, SITENAME is considering all toys that come in the Classics-style packaging to be Classics toys, even if they do not self-identify as such. Those toys include:

*Prime vs. Megatron Ultimate Battle set
*Magnus vs. Skywarp Battle for Autobot City set
*20th Anniversary Prime redeco
*Mini-Cons (the Mini-Con sets have been referred to as Classics toys on Hasbro's website, but not on the packaging)
*Toys "R" Us exclusive reissue Soundwave
*Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus (2008)
*Jetfire and Grimlock (2008)
*Masterpiece Starscream Hasbro release

Uncertain Future?
Though response to the figures was very positive, the Classics franchise was created as a limited line to fill the shelves between Cybertron and the movie. With the Movie toyline and the Transformers Animated series scheduled to follow it, the fate of the Classics line was uncertain.

The 2007 exclusives capitalized on the popularity as the Classics universe, but even that was not to be the end of things. Hasbro revealed at Botcon 2007 that a new incarnation of Transformers Universe was in the works for Fall 2008 and would operate as a blanket line for their non-Animated product, including a new line glossed as Classics 2.0.

Henkei! Henkei! Transformers
Henkei! Henkei! Transformers is the name of the Japanese version of the Classics toyline. Like the Beast Wars Returns toyline before it, this line will feature several redecoes of existing figures to make them look more like the original character models than their American counterparts. For example, Megatron is silver and black instead of neon green and gray, Starscream and Grimlock will be colored closer to their show models, Convoy/Prime and Bumble/Bumblebee have less white paint, and Astrotrain has a more show-inspired deco of dark gray and purple instead of white and violet. In addition to these tweaks, every toy has various areas cast in chrome, seemingly for no other reason than to create a line-wide commonality.

Fiction
Unlike the U.S. version of this line, the Henkei line comes with a mini-manga featuring Convoy, Bumble, Grimlock, Megatron, and Starscream. This short story starts off in the 21st Century with Megatron attacking Tokyo, planning to steal its energy and enslave the humans. Then the Cybertrons arrive to stop the Destrons, saying they will always find the Destrons and stop them thanks to the humans' information lines. Starscream is taken out by Bumble and Grimlock, while Megatron fights Convoy. The Destrons then retreat and the humans thank the Cybertrons. But the battle has only begun...
Universe Classics
Originally referred to as Classics 2.0 during the Hasbro preview panel, Hasbro announced bringing back Classics as part of a new Universe line, because of high fan support and to pick up the torch of realistic Earth vehicle designs from the ending Movie line. Hasbro said they were focusing primarily on characters who had realistic Earth alt-modes, were not represented in other current lines, and had high repaint potential. Concept art of Sunstreaker and Sideswipe was shown (same base mold with different heads and alternate chest transformations and weapons). Art of an updated Decepticon triple-changer Octane was also shown.

Early in January 2008, Hasbro revealed the new character molds and later revealed several redecos of Cybertron toys at Toyfair 2008 in Febuary:
