Lord Zarak was a high-ranking politician of questionable morality and ethics. Though generally believing he worked for what was, in his own mind, the good of all Nebulos, he tended to be close-minded, dishonest, manipulative, self-aggrandizing, and excessively proud. He loved his daughter Llyra very much, but was a political rival of her young and idealistic lover Galen. If you crossed Scooby-Doo's Shaggy with The X-Files Fox Mulder, Hunter O'Nion is who you'd get. With scruffy ginger hair, a green "Alien Death Ray" T-shirt and a VW Kombi van, you'd be forgiven for writing him off as some hippie slacker, but Hunter O'Nion (that's Oh-Nigh-On, not un-yun; he's a little sensitive about his last name) is really a modern-day questing knight. He runs the Mechatopia.com website, a repository for information about the presence of gigantic extraterrestrial mechanoids on Earth, and is willing to personally scour the back-roads of continental North America for further evidence.

If there's one problem with Hunter, it's that he's not the most sensitive of people; also, in his drive to uncover the truth, he can get very blunt and direct when someone who may know more than they let on gets evasive - even if that someone has good reason to dissemble.

A chance encounter with Verity Carlo in Arizona, though, gives him more than he could have wished for: Not only does he achieve personal contact with an actual alien robot in disguise, he's dropped right into the middle of a covert war. The question is, now that Hunter's found his proof, what will he do with it?

Fiction
IDW Comics continuity
ongoing
After picking up Verity Carlo in the North American desert, he was surprisingly thrust into the war between the Autobots and Decepticons. After being rescued from a Decepticon assault by Ratchet, he offered assistance to the Autobots in an..."unofficial" capacity, spying on an abandoned Decepticon base before it was destroyed by Blitzwing and Skywarp, under orders from Starscream. Infiltration

After this mission, Optimus Prime ordered that Hunter and the other humans be sent home. However, as the Autobots escorted them away from the Autobot base, a Machination assult team attacked. It appears that Hunter and Sunstreaker were killed by the Machination, but upon examination of Sunstreaker's husk, Rachet discovered that it was a fake.

Meanwhile, Hunter was being operated on by the Machination, his body becoming the host for mysterious implants. Dante presented Hunter to a pleased, mysterious, and damaged Transformer who ordered mass-production to begin. Dante, gesturing to a wall of headless Sunstreaker bodies, implied that Hunter may still play a role in the Machination's "new world order." Escalation

The Machination subjected Hunter to an extensive regimen of brainwashing, after which Dante was informed that the boy was a blank slate, an organic machine that they could do with as they wished. Quality control for this process was apparently lacking, as Hunter was able to retain his own thoughts through a mantra of useless science fiction trivia. Skulking unseen through the Machination facility, Hunter was surprised to discover the severed but still functioning head of Sunstreaker, begging him for death!Devastation
Lione (リオーネ, Lē•ō•né) is one of the Headmaster Warriors, the group of diminutive young robots training on the planet Master to become fully-fledged Headmasters.

Fiction
Headmasters animated series
Lione was among the members of the resistance formed to force the Decepticons off of planet Master. When the Autobot Headmasters arrived on Master to aid the resistance in a battle against the Decepticon forces, Lione was in the group that emerged after the fighting to thank them for their assistance.

(Note: The colorists apaprently got Lione confused with Steeljaw. This is far from the only coloring mistake made for these models.)

TV Magazine Masterforce prologue
Some time later, after the Decepticons had been forced off of Earth and a larger war began based around use of advanced technology from Planet Master, Chromedome and the other Headmasters took it upon themselves to train Lione and the other Headmaster Warriors in the use of their powers.
: Available exclusively in Japan, Lione transforms from a yellow and orange lion into a head, in which mode he can connect to any of the larger Headmaster toys. He goes for ludicrous sums of money on the secondary market, to say nothing of the super-rare, entirely white version of the figure which was only available in certain Japanese toy stores.
:Fortress Maximus is an Autobot in the Japanese Generation 1 and American Robots in Disguise continuity families.

Fortress Maximus is a colossal Autobot guardian hidden on Earth to protect the planet from evil. Immense in strength, unmatchable in firepower and impregnable in durability, Fortress Maximus' only weakness is his compassion for children.

Fortress Maximus does not appear to be sentient in and of himself, but rather, is controlled by Cerebros. Even Cerebros himself does make his own decisions, instead operating on a tri-lateral recognition program that defines the actions he will take. Cerebros on his own will only respond to an Autobot energy signature, and when combined with Fortress Maximus, will react only to the bio-energy of human beings. To prevent his power being used for evil, his recognition program operates on "harmonic resonance," which allows him to sense the intentions of those that would command him. He will not follow commands of an evil or self-serving nature; consequently, due to their worldly innocence, human children are particularly adept at controlling him.
:(Note: Most websites list Steve Kramer as Fortress Maximus due to the fact that he provided the voice of Cerebros, but from the small number of lines he actually speaks, it does not appear to be Kramer behind the microphone.

Fortress Maximus was hidden on Earth eons ago in order to protect the planet, slumbering in stasis beneath the surface of the planet, where Metro City would come to be built. The various keys that would enable his reactivation were scattered across the globe - the O-Parts, the Orb of Sigma and his Headmaster component, Cerebros - and sealed within ancient structures, suggesting that ancient human civilizations had some hand in the process. Although his existence went on to slip into the realm of legend amongst most of the populous on Cybertron, certain high-ranking Autobots and Predacons were well aware of the truth behind the story, and, in the mid-20th century, a team of six Autobots were sent to Earth to reactivate Maximus, only for their ship to crash into the mountain that would come to be known as Castle Peak, trapping them all in stasis. The Decepticons

Around the beginning of the 21st century, the Predacon leader Megatron was dispatched to Earth by the Predacon Council to acquire Fortress Maximus. Surprise Attack Attacking the National Scientific Symposium, he captured archaeologist Doctor Onishi, whose research had led him to discover the trail the led to Fortress Maximus. Battle Protocol The Predacons battles with their Autobot enemies steadily led to the discovery of several O-Parts, which fell into Autobot hands; the Autobot craft in Castle Peak, however, was uncovered by Megatron and the Autobots within co-opted into Decepticons, led by Scourge

While tunnelling beneath Metro City, the Build Team found themselves affects by a strange energy field that caused them to hallucinate and fight amongst each other, eventually forcing them to withdraw. Investigating, the Autobots discovered that the cavern beneath the city containing Fortress Maximus, and that the energy field was a defense mechanism designed to keep away any intruders. Fortress Maximus (episode) Exposure to Maximus's energies reawakened Scourge's memories of his original mission to reawaken the fortress, but his Decepticon programming twisted the mission, and he now sought to acquire Maximus's power for himself. As Optimus Prime held him off, the Build Team relocate Maximus - in his city mode - to a concealed structure in the middle of Metro City, hiding him from the Decepticons. Koji Gets His Wish

During this battle, Doctor Onishi was freed from the Predacons, and equipped the Autobots with tracking devices that allowed them to quickly and easily track down all the remaining O-Parts. A Friendly Contest United, the O-Parts led to the Orb of Sigma, resulting in a battle that ended with Megatron's disapearance. Peril From The Past The Orb in turn led to Cerebros, who the Decepticons and Predacons - now led by Scourge - were able to capture. Having discovering the hiding place of Fortress Maximus, Scourge utilised the Autobot portion of his energy-signature to activate Cerebros, who then brought Fortress Maximus online. Maximus, however, then proceeded to run wild, stomping his way through Metro City unheeding of Scourge's commands, until the Autobots' human ally Koji called out for him to stop, and he obeyed. Transforming back to city mode, Maximus vanished beneath the Earth, and the villains absconded with Cerebros once more. Maximus Emerges

Realising that Koji had been able to control Fortress Maximus because he was human, Scourge amplified the portion of his bio-signature that was human (derived from Kelly) to seize control of Maximus once more when the city reappeared in the Sahara Desert, only for the Autobots to gather a mass of human children together to override his command. The Human Element Deciding that he required a human of his own to control Maximus for him, a case of mistaken identity led Scourge to kidnap Koji's friend Carl; nevertheless, Maximus was successfully activated and piloted by Carl when he resurfaced in a jungle. By this point, Megatron had returned - having been upgraded to Galvatron by the power of the Orb of Sigma's pyramid - and Scourge chose this moment to reveal his treachery, ordering Fortress Maximus to crush his former leader. However, Carl's selfish desire to defeat the villains himself and show up Koji caused Maximus to power down, and the Autobots arrived in time to save him and finally take possession of Cerebros, as Maximus vanished once more. Mistaken Identity

With the Autobots having acquired a full understanding of Fortress Maximus's activation protocols thanks to Cerebros, their base was then attacked by the Predacons and Decepticons, the latter having been reprogrammed back to loyalty by Galvatron. In the midst of the battle, Wedge's determination to defeat Galvatron resonated with Cerebros, and he summoned and activated Fortress Maximus. Galvatron combined with his ship, the Megastar and battled with Maximus, but was defeated when Maximus unleashed his Maximum Firepower attack and blew the ship to smithereens. Surprise Attack!

Galvatron survived the barrage, however, and restored his strength by affixing himself to Maximus and draining the giant robot's energy, supercharging himself. Galvatron's Revenge Omega Prime proceeded to challenge Galvatron to a final battle at the Earth's core. Koji, meanwhile, contacted as many children as he could, instructing them to send their energy to Fortress Maximus to re-power him; Maximus absorbed and re-channeled the energy to Omega Prime in the form of the Matrix Blade, which Prime used to finally defeat Galvatron. With the Predacons and Decepticons at last beaten and captured, Fortress Maximus transformed to starship mode and transported the villains to the asteroid prison colony. The Final Battle
This does not apply to the American version of either series, however, which remain separate continuities.)

Robot Masters
After taking the Predacons to prison, Fortress Maximus returned to Earth. When construction of Autobot City began in 2003, Maximus formed the core of the fortress. Later, in 2004, Maximus (also known as "Cybertron Base" at the time) had his central systems re-written to comply with the new Solitarium-based enhancements made to the Scramble City project.

In 2007, after a year-long anti-Transformer campaign by the Earth Defense Command, Fortress Maximus played a part in the goodwill campaign to repair human-Transformer relations by serving as a performance stage for the singing group, the Kiss Players. During one of their shows, the mysterious Sparkbots suddenly appeared and demanded that the human group members kiss them. When they complied, they and Maximus were all whisked away on a whirlwind tour of time and space, with Maximus serving as their transport and base as they collected fragments of the so-called "Allspark" from famous Autobot and Maximal leaders throught Transformer history. Notably, he did not demonstrate any signs of intelligence or independence during the journey.

Near the end of the adventure, while being piloted in pursuit of a mysterious golden hand that had taken several Allspark fragments, Maximus accidentally struck the "Wall of Time". With its passengers scattered across dimensions, Maximus was hurled back in time 4 million years and crash-langed on the planet Master. His planetfall was observed by a group of Cybertronians who had migrated there, and their leader, Fortress used the technology of Maximus to refine his own "Headmaster" theory, creating Transtectors, including his own gigantic one, Battleship Maximus.

Meanwhile, after briefly adventuring in the Unicron Trilogy universe, the Kiss Players returned to their home dimension and accompanied Primus back through time to prehistoric Earth. There, it was revealed that they had not been collecting fragments of the Allspark, but portions of the scattered lifeforce of Unicron. Resurrected by the Sparkbots, the resurrected Unicron was then destroyed by Primus and his lifeforce was sealed deep within the planet. The heretofore unknown origin of Fortress Maximus was then revealed when Primus created him to serve as the eternal guardian of Unicron's lifeforce. Kiss Players (fiction)
* Brave Maximus (2000)
: Japanese ID number: C-027

: Brave Maximus is an extensive redeco of Generation 1 Fortress Maximus, essentially replacing much of Fortress's lighter colors with darker ones. Due to marketing campaign concerns, Brave Maximus was never released with all of Fortress Maximus' accessories, missing his two hand guns, Cog's components, and the two Master Swords. These parts were later offered as campaign and lucky draw prizes by Takara.

: Despite this, Brave Maximus retains all of Fortress' functionality, being able to transform from his 2 foot tall robot mode to battleship mode to city mode and back again. In city mode he features a rotating radar, a jail cell, a working elevator that leads to a button-activated car launcher, and two manual car launchers on his arm-ramps. The Spy Changers are the only figures from the toyline that interact with him particularly well, although his two arm-ramps can also launch the Autobot Brothers. In particular, the Spy Changer toy of Scourge fits in the robot's control room perfectly, allowing you to replicate the scenes from the cartoon, as well as actually providing an "evil" figure to lock in the jail cell. (Of course, Spychanger Scourge wasn't part of the Car Robots toyline, and Maximus wasn't part of RiD! Still, Japanese fans were eventually able buy chibi-Scourge like they buy many US-"exclusive" toys, as a "US Edition" in its American packaging.)

: The back of Maximus's instruction leaflet features a color play mat that the city connects to for use with other Car Robots/Robots in Disguise toys.

: This mold was also used to make Grand Maximus and Cybertron Base.

Robot Masters
*Cybertron Base (Contest prize, 2004)

: First Prize in a Robot Masters contest where only 10 were awarded, Cybertron Base is completely identical to the retail-release Car Robots Brave Maximus toy, down to what accessories are lacking from the other incarnations of the mold, coming only with the two head-robots, a radar dish and the gun for the mid-robot. His head modules are renamed Zebres and Master - fictionally speaking, whether or not these are just renamed versions of the Emissary and Cerebros, or if they were replaced by these new robots, is unknown.

: Cybertron Base was shipped in a fairly plain white box, and came with newly-printed instructions. He also came with the exact same paperwork packet as Car Robots Brave Maximus, including unchanged instructions, a Car Robots catalogue, and the Bave Maximus bio card.

Trivia
* According to the toy's profile card, Brave Maximus' robot mode is 350 meters tall (1,148 feet).

* In 2002, Hasbro began to solicit a domestic US release of Brave Maximus as Robots in Disguise Fortress Maximus. However, it was later canceled due to the toy's failure of standard industry drop tests.

* The figure was released by in Korea by Sonokong in 2003, identical to the Takara version save for one detail - the Autobot insignia sticker on the city's central tower was upside-down.
Fighting is against his pacifist nature, even for the most noble of causes. ==Fiction==
Marvel Comics continuity
Fortress Maximus was an architect in his early career, designing and even constructing many works on Cybertron. When the war came, he turned his talents to fighting.

During the long absence of Optimus Prime, Megatron, and their respective troops from Cybertron, unit commander Fortress Maximus became so sick of the war that he decided to leave it. He didn't care if it made him a coward or not, he simply believed that the war would go on regardless of whether or not he was in it. Taking a number of Autobots with him, he retreated to the peaceful planet of Nebulos.

Unfortunately, it wasn't long before mistakes were made and Maximus' group found themselves at odds with the local human populace. Maximus 'proved' their peaceful intentions by marching up to the Nebulan capital, and discarding the group's weapons. When that didn't work, he did the next logical thing and pulled his head off. Four other Autobots also resorted to this grotesque stunt before Galen, head of the Nebulan World Watchers, was convinced they weren't a threat. Ring of Hate!

When the Decepticons followed the Autobots to Nebulos, Galen himself ended up becoming the head of Fortress Maximus to help defend the peace and his world, as both the Nebulan and Autobot underwent the binary-bonding process to become a Headmaster. Fortress Maximus remained the leader of the Nebulan Autobots for the rest of their battles there, eventually abandoning the planet to support his stranded comrades on Earth. During the transport, Fortress Maximus underwent a number of treatments to alter his size considerably, increasing himself from a city-sized behemoth to a slightly larger city-sized behemoth. With these changes, he could save a lot of time in combat by simply stepping on Decepticons instead of having to actually fight them.

Of course, with his larger scale, Fortress Maximus needed a new head (Galen still being stuck at roughly human-size). For this reason, another Autobot, Cerebros, was added to serve as a secondary stage between Galen and Maximus. As the head of Cerebros, Galen could transform Cerebros into the larger head of Fortress Maximus.

Arriving on Earth, Fortress Maximus led his fellow Headmasters to Mount St. Hilary, source of the Autobot distress call that had drawn them to Earth. After recovering the damaged Goldbug, the group encountered Spike, who had come in search of his missing younger brother Buster Witwicky. Spike asked for the Autobots' help in finding his brother, but Fortress Maximus was more interested in their primary mission of locating the Autobots of Earth, and led his troops off to follow the fuel trail of the missing Ark.

Scorponok's crew soon followed Maximus to Earth, however, and to the same cave. When Spike replayed Goldbug's distress message, Fortress Maximus and company returned to the cave, apologizing to Spike for his failure to consider the danger he had brought to Earth's natives by leading the Decepticons there.

In the ensuing battle, Spike retreated further into the volcano's caves to seek shelter. Scorponok followed, seeking a hostage; Fortress Maximus pursued him. As the caves narrowed down, Maximus was forced to send Cerebros onward, and eventually Galen himself had to leave Cerebros to cross a fragile rock bridge. Scorponok used the distraction to blast rocks down on Galen, killing him. As the Decepticon leader left, laughing, Galen passed on his control helmet to Spike, allowing the Earthen to assume control of Fortress Maximus and drive the Decepticons off. Trial by Fire!

Spike soon underwent the full binary bonding process and became the leader of the Steelhavens crew of Autobots. The Desert Island of Space!
Spike and Fortress Maximus would go on to have a very tumultuous relationship, fighting both the Decepticons and, at times, each other, as Spike constantly expressed his displeasure at being the large Autobot's partner. Once his brother Buster was finally rescued, Spike tried to go go his own way and resume his life, but time and time again the Decepticons would pose some sort of threat to the planet so immense that he would have to join with Fortress Maximus to combat it.

After the other Autobots and Decepticons left Earth to battle Unicron, Spike and Fortress Maximus remained on Earth to safeguard the planet. Thus, when the remains of the Ark fell from orbit and crashed in the northern tundra of Canada, and Galvatron emerged from the wreckage to wreak havoc, it fell to Fortress Maximus to stop him. The Last Autobot?

Despite his success in that mission, it was actually Megatron who would prove to be the undoing of this giant warrior: when the reborn and reconditioned Decepticon leader stole the Ark and used it as his personal flagship, Spike and Maximus took it upon themselves to stop him. Brutally beaten in combat with an upgraded and super-charged Megatron, the pair dragged themselves to the heart of the ship and threw themselves into the anti-matter containment unit at the core of its power supply, killing both of them. To add further insult to their sacrifice, it was a complete waste of effort: every other Transformer who was on board, including Megatron, managed to survive the destruction of the ship and lived to fight another day.
When the Hive of Nebulos had developed the massive Transformer Scorponok in 2007, Spike found that his only available resources to combat the threat were the Hive's older technology and the pacifist Autobot Cerebros. Spike used the technology to create an Autobot giant, at the same time re-engineering Cerebros to become the new robot's head, and to take Spike himself as his own head (Cerebros seemed to get little say in these matters). The giant, named Fortress Maximus, blasted off for Cybertron, where he expectedly fought (and won) against Scorponok. After Maximus/Cerebros and Spike saved Cybertron and Earth from the Hive and the Decepticons, Optimus Prime sent them back to Nebulos as its guardians.

It is unclear if Fortress Maximus had any sentience of his own; he did speak once in his own voice. But for the most part, even Cerebros' will seemed to be pushed aside so Spike could run the whole thing himself. The Rebirth, Part 3

: The largest Transformers toy from Generation 1, Fortress Maximus has multiple altmode configurations. He transforms into a compact "city" mode, and can also assume a secondary mode described in the US instruction as a "battle station." This mode was rebranded as a starship for the Japanese instructions, and is the "default" mode for Fortress Maximus in the Headmasters animated series. Additionally, the 1987 Hasbro toy catalog features a mis-transformed Fortress Maximus in a mode referred to as an "impenetable fortress," essentially consisting of his city mode with the legs splayed outwards.

: In all modes, Maximus has a wide array of pop-out (non-firing) guns and gimmicks. Its left leg hides a small prison cell, plus has a swing-out cannon/helipad. Its right leg has a small storage compartment. Its torso has a gear-activated spinner for the detachable radar array accessory, a "control socket" for Cerebros' "communcations tower" mode, and a working elevator that can lift small toys up to its central ramp to be launched in its altmodes. (The crank for this elevator ends up in a very unfortunate position in robot mode.) Each arm had a long ramp on the back with sliding launchers for small vehicles.

: Its robot-mode head is formed by Cerebros, who does not actually need Spike to attach to the upper body. It came with both Headmaster units, plus the Gasket and Grommet mini-vehicles.

: The Japanese release of Fortress Maximus came with a pair of swords; one for Fortress, a large one for Maximus. It is currently unknown if the swords were originally planned for the Hasbro version but dropped for price or safety concerns, or if they were a Takara-initiated addition to their release of the toy.

Trivia
* 'Fortress Maximus' was likely a considered name for the character that eventually became Metroplex in Generation 1. The Marvel comic adaptation of the 1986 Movie even refers to Autobot City as Fortress Maximus in a caption.

* Fortress Maximus was the first toy to be released with a bona-fide Earthling figure. All of the other Headmasters' companions were from Nebulos. (Although Maximus' tech specs refer to 'the Nebulan leader, Spike', the general consensus is that it was supposed to be the popular figure from TV and other media, who is almost certainly an Earthling.)

* When Spike transforms to join Fortress Maximus for the last time in the Generation 2 book, Cerebros is not shown, and Spike transforms directly into Fortress Maximus's head. Maximus is shown to be no larger than Megatron. In real-life terms, it's an obvious series of art errors; in the context of the story, one might wonder if Maximus was reduced back to his original, smaller, size. It seems improbable, considering that Spike had been retired for years by that point.

* Fortress Maximus has the distinction of having one of the most well known Transformers bootleg versions in existence. While Cerebros has been omitted, the Spike figure is the same, and the body has been scaled down to match, effectively making the body compatible with any other Headmaster head. It also fetches absurd prices for a bootleg.

* In America, Fortress Maximus is seven distinct flavors of awesome, while in Japan he is only 3 kinds of awesome.
Despite his great power, size, and rank, Fortress Maximus is a weary and reluctant warrior. Fighting is against his pacifist nature, even for the most noble of causes. Over time, the endless conflict on Cybertron has worn him down, to the point that he's willing to walk away from the war entirely to preserve himself and his ideals.

Fortress Maximus is big. How big generally depends on the continuity, but often as not he's binary-bonded to a smaller robot named Cerebros who forms his head; Cerebros' own head is formed by Spike.
Fiction

Fiction

As the caves narrowed down, Maximus was forced to send Cerebros onward, and eventually Galan himself had to leave Cerebros to cross a fragile rock bridge. Scorponok used the distraction to blast rocks down on Galan, killing him. As the Decepticon leader left, laughing, Galan passed on his control helmet to Spike, allowing the Earthen to assume control of Fortress Maximus and drive the Decepticons off.

It is currently unknown if the swords were originally planned for the Hasbro version but dropped for price or safety concerns, or if they were a Takara-initiated addition to their release of the toy.
* Fortress Maximus was a larger "build-a-bot" from the third "Act" of the Super Collection Figure PVC line; one piece of it was packaged in each of the six clear pieces in a case of twelve. Like the regular PVCs, it was available both in full-color or colorless-clear versions.

* The Fortress Maximus PVC was revisited for Hasbro's Heroes of Cybertron line, again as a pack-in, one part in each of the six releases of wave four. This version was cast entirely in clear-blue plastic then painted over, save a small spot on his head to give him a "light-pipe" glowing-eyes effect.

In 1984, Spike was a 14-year-old adolescent working with his father Sparkplug on an oil rig when the Decepticons attacked. After the Autobots rescued them, they volunteered to become their native guides to planet Earth.

Spike had many adventures with the Autobots, taking part in just about everything they did on Earth for at least the next few years. He became especially close friends with the little Autobot Bumblebee. At one point, however, Spike was injured in a Decepticon attack, and his mind was transferred to the unstable Autobot X. The process began to play havoc with Spike's mind, allowing Megatron to manipulate him in into attacking Optimus Prime and the Autobots. Only after nearly killing his father did Spike realize that he was being duped. His mind was subsequently transferred back into his body.

In the course of his adventures with the Autobots, he met Carly, an impetuous prodigy and MIT graduate. Despite being (much) smarter, older (she could drive), and hotter than him, Carly displayed a noticeable affection for the somewhat-dim Spike. They mated and produced offspring.

As an adult in the distant year 2005, Spike was stationed with Bumblebee on one of the Autobot's secret moonbases. He had a bit of a potty-mouth about being eaten by the monster-planet Unicron, but that would make anyone pissed. He was saved from the belly of Unicron by his afforementioned offspring. Later, when the Autobots had regained control of the planet, he became Earth's ambassador...or something.

Marooned on the distant planet Nebulos he became a Headmaster partner to Cerebros and single handedly rebuilt an ancient city into a giant transformer.

He polished up good.
Generation 1
(Note: Events from the UK-only comic stories are in italics.)

Spike Witwicky was away at college for the first few years of the Autobot/Decepticon war on Earth until he returned home to find his younger brother Buster kidnapped by the Decepticons. Spike soon became the binary-bond partner to the Headmaster Fortress Maximus, after Fortress Maximus' first partner, Galen, was killed in a battle with the Deception Scorponok.

Thereafter he struggled with balancing his responsibillities to his family with those to the Autobots. Once Buster was rescued, and with Optimus Prime returned to life to take his place as Autobot leader, Spike went into retirement, mothballing poor Max. This retirement wouldn't last however as it was interupted, first by a pair of Decepticon Pretenders, then by the crash of the Ark and a raving Galvatron. Through the course of these conflicts Spike learned that the binary bonding he had undergone with Maximus was far deeper and more permanent than he'd believed. Fortress Maximus was always there with him in his head, always a part of him. After his battle with Galvatron he seemed to have made peace with his connection to Fortress Maximus and his role as (perhaps) the last Autobot protector of Earth.

In an alternate timeline in the year 2009, Decepticons had built a machine to destroy Earth while a space-time anomaly was eating entire planets. After Rodimus Prime orchestrated a plan to travel twenty years back in time to the source of the anomaly, Spike Witwicky and his son Daniel accused Rodimus of shirking his responsibilities towards Earth and guilted Rodimus into allotting more troops to help destroy the Decepticons' machine.

In another alternate timeline in the year 2009, Spike Witwicky was part of a very small Autobot/human resistance movement in a world where Galvatron II's Decepticons controlled North America. The handful of Autobots who remained alive despaired and were on the cusp of giving up, but Spike and Lisa (who shared growing feelings for each other) guilted them into one last suicidal attack on Decepticon headquarters in New York before the rest of the world could unleash a nuclear holocaust onto America at midnight. Though there were several casualties, Spike managed to hoist an American flag on the Decepticon stronghold on live television, a symbolic measure which prompted the end of the planned nuclear strike. Before Galvatron II could respond, the Decepticon despot was abducted by Hook, Line, and Sinker into another timeline.

Generation 2
Spike followed up on the now Megatron-controlled Ark, which he'd apparently stuffed Fortress Maximus aboard and then abandoned after his battle with Galvatron (great job protecting Earth there, "Last Autobot").

He reunited with Max and together they . . . um sort of stopped Megatron (well, delayed him a little . . . maybe) by throwing themselves into the ship's antimatter core.

He blowed up real good.

Dreamwave comics continuity
It's to be assumed that Spike and his father, Sparkplug, met the Autobots early on in their time on Earth (in a similar fashion as Spike and Sparkplug did in the cartoon, or Buster and Sparkplug did in the Marvel Comics). Spike definitely had a younger brother named Buster (like in the Marvel comics), yet it was Spike who formed a close friendship with Bumblebee (like in the cartoon, rather than missing out on the first few years of the Witwicky family's interaction with the Transformers while engaging in drinking orgies at college, like he did in the Marvel comics). The exact details of the Witwicky's early years as the Autobots' human associates are therefore not known.

Somewhere in the time after 1984, Spike married Carly, who then gave birth to Spike's son, Daniel. After the explosion of the Ark II in 1999, which caused the death of Spike's father Sparkplug, Spike tried to leave his involvement with the Transformers behind and settled down with his wife and son in Cleveland, Ohio, trying to live a new life as a normal family. The newfound peace wouldn't last for long, though, as Spike was soon recruited by a shady military official named General Hallo seeking his help in reviving Optimus Prime, whose body his men had recently found in the Arctic. Spike, who had been entrusted by Prime with a fragment of the Matrix, used that fragment to bring Prime back to life. Prime Directive, Part 1 Prime Directive, Part 2

Prime subsequently used the Matrix to revive and assemble a group of his Autobots, which he would then lead against Megatron's Decepticons. Meanwhile, Spike was imprisoned by General Hallo, who had double motives behind reviving the Autobots and even tried to kill them by bombing them. With the help of Larry, the World's Most Resourceful Janitor, Spike was able to escape his cell and uncover Hallo's sinister schemes, but not in time to stop him from launching a nuclear strike against the Autobots which was ultimately averted when Superion sacrificed his life in order to make it detonate before it could reach its target. Prime Directive, Part 5 Prime Directive, Part 6

Following these events, Spike once again returned to his family and tried to leave his past with the Transformers behind. A few months later, though, his old friend Bumblebee, who had just decided to quit the Autobot army following a fierce battle against Sunstorm, showed up by his house. Spike, frustrated that the Autobots refused to leave him alone, hurled a few nasty insults against his old buddy before changing his mind and joining him on a men's night out in the city, where they stopped a mugging. The follow-up scene of Carly shouting at Spike singing drinking songs with Bumblebee was never published due to the untimely faltering of Dreamwave. It also means we will never if Spike and Bumblebee formed a crime fighting duo

Devil's Due G.I. Joe vs the Transformers continuity
In response to the forming of the terrorist organization Cobra and its commandeered Transformers, the United States government assembled a strike team dubbed G.I. Joe. Spike Witwicky (codename Spike) was listed on the roster, but was never seen. G.I. Joe vs the Transformers, Part 2

(Oddly, Spike Witwicky's was the only name of a military specialist on the roster which was not ordered last name, first name.)
Marvel Comics continuity
When Fortress Maximus was super-sized during the trip from Nebulos to Earth, Cerebros, basically an oversophisticated drone, as per the characters' packaging bio, was built to serve as an intermediate robot form between Galen and Fort Max... not much else to say, really.

In the animated series, Cerebros was a sentient Autobot, who was concerned about humanity's growing involvement in the Transformers' conflict. He found himself stranded on Nebulos alongside several others when Scourge unwittingly unleashed the power of the Plasma Energy Chamber. He refused to become a Headmaster or Targetmaster however, reiterating his belief that human(oid)s shouldn't endanger themselves by fighting alongside Autobots. He wandered off and got his rear handed to him by the drones guarding the abandoned Hive city, and came crawling back (literally) to the other Autobots. When Optimus Prime arrived to pick up the Autobots on Nebulos and drive them to soccer practice... err, I mean, fly them back to Cybertron to help stop Galvatron and his all-out invasion of the planet, Cerebros decided to stay behind with Spike Witwicky, and help rebuild the Hive city he discovered to become Fortress Maximus. They later arrived on Cybertron just in time to battle their Decepticon counterpart, Scorponok. Cerebros afterwards asked Spike to deactivate him, not wishing to witness any more warfare. Spike showed him that Cybertron had been restored to a new Golden Age, and Cerebros broke out of his suicidal-pacifist funk. He was later assigned, along with the other binary-bonded Autobots, to protect Nebulos. Cerebros said that Optimus had made him the happiest girl alive... well, something to that effect anyway. The Rebirth, Part 1 The Rebirth, Part 2
* There seems to be ongoing confusion on the proper way to transform Cerebros, as various sources have shown his legs made from the sides of Fortress Maximus's head (the horns visible and his feet made from the grills), while other sources have turned them around so that he has his own feet. The legs on the toy swivel so that either version is possible.
* In The Rebirth, Part 3 Cerebros is depicted as having an Alt Mode. Curiously it is in fact, Fortress Maximus' City mode. Whether Spike based the larger Transformer's design on Cerebros, or if it was a side effect of the Binary Bonding process is unknown.
Headmaster
Headmasters are a type of symbiotic variation on the Transformer lifeform where a smaller sentient being, frequently but not exclusively organic, transforms into the head of a larger robot. The process by which this is accomplished varies by continuity. In conversation, the term "Headmaster" can apply to both the primary partner (the head), and their significant other (the body).

Headmaster bonding in most continuities occurs between two sentient beings, but there have been cases where the head (such as Cerebros in the G1 Cartoon) or the body (such as the Transtectors in the Japanese anime, or the Sunstreaker clones in the IDW comics) are non-sentient constructs controlled entirely by the other partner.

When it occurs between two sentient beings, the benefits of the Headmaster procedure are many: the partner gains control of a larger, more powerful body, and the Transformer gains an extra perspective on the battlefield, the psychic Binary bonding involved allowing him to draw on both his own ideas, tactics, and instincts as well as those of his partner as quickly as if they were coming from his own head (since they are).

Fiction
Marvel Comics
The Headmaster technology was primarily the invention of the Nebulan scientist Arcana and was designed originally to let Nebulans utilize the bodies of Autobots to defend their world (something they did not trust the Autobots enough to let them do on their own.)

In this continuity all Headmaster partnerships seen are human/nebulan-Transformer. The organic half of the pair is able to transform by use of a special suit of Headmaster armor and a control helmet that interfaces with bio-cybernetic augmentation in the surgically altered humanoid. It IS possible for an organic to control/communicate with the larger robots form with only the control helmet even if they have not undergone the binary bonding/augmentation process to let them transform into a head and likewise an altered/binary bonded organic remains permanently psychically connected to his partner regardless of whether he retains the helmet or armor.

The main weakness in the design comes from conflicts of personality. Since there was never meant to be an equal partnership in the original Headmaster concept, very little attention was paid to how the Transformer and their partner would interact during the original bonding. As the prototypes of the binary bonding idea, the Headmasters suffered from a lack of knowledge on how important this interaction would be. Many early Headmasters simply did not get along with their own bodies, and vice-versa. Because of this, partners would often disagree or be at odds with each other, resulting in confusion in the Transformer as the voices in his head had extended arguments over what to do. Depending on the compatibility and personalities of the partners their minds tend to merge to different extents and their joint psyche manifests in unique ways for each individual. (For instance, in the comic, Spike and Fort Max were two separate minds sharing one body, with each dominant in their own form and the other submissive, while Lord Zarak and Scorponok seemed to reach some sort of fusion where he was both beings merged into one. A similar situation developed between Optimus Prime and Hi-Q.)

(Note: this was not an unexpected problem for the Transformers. Early combiner teams had similar issues, with the resulting gestalt being much simpler and less intelligent than the sum of its parts, often because the parts did not get along. However, since the Nebulans failed to ask before starting the Headmaster plan, they were not able to avoid this problem)

Headmaster partners are unique amongst their brethren (the Targetmasters and Powermasters) in that they have the power to take full control over the body they are connected to, often against that Transformer's will. However, over time, both the Headmasters and their Transformer partners realized that they worked better when both sides had a say in things (two heads being better than one), and the relationship between them evolved from master/slave into a more equal partnership. In that cooperation lies the real strength of the Headmaster process.

Generation 1 Cartoon
In this Cartoon the Headmaster process was the brainchild of Brainstorm, who had advocated that using an organic partner would be a good strategy in combat with the Decepticons. It also seems much less invasive for the organic humanoid involved. No surgical alteration is apparently needed on their part and the process seems to consist mainly of altering the Transformers head to 1) have a control center for a partner to sit at inside and 2) to transform around the partner into a fancy exo-suit. While some who have undergone it have commented at feeling a closer bond there is no reason to believe there is any true psychic connection between them as in the binary bonding of other continuities.

Japanese animated continuity
Attempting to escape the wars on Cybertron, a group of diminutive Cybertronians (most of them only a little larger than human beings) fled the planet, only to have their ship crash on the hazardous, inhospitable planet Master. The need for survival fostered several technological advances (helped in part by technology derived from a time-traveling spaceship that crashed on the planet sometime later), chief among them the creation of "Transtectors," large, lifeless robot bodies that the smaller robots could connect to and control. The small Cybertronians had not yet actually mastered the art of transformation, however, and had to undergo rigorous mental and physical training in order to become "Headmasters" (their name, obviously enough, derived from the planet itself).

The Headmasters subsequently migrated from Master and joined the Autobot and Decepticon forces on Cybertron and Earth, leading to an lengthy conflict that ultimately resulted in both factions departing the Earth for a prolonged period of time. With all easy access to Earth cut off, leaving it's safety in doubt should it be attacked by Decepticons in the future, the Autobots on Master created Master-Braces, technology that harnessed the mysterious Chokon Power to transform humans and allow them to connect to Transtectors and become Headmasters themselves. A set of six Master-Braces and Transtectors were dispatched to Earth, but half the shipment was stolen by Decepticons, and both factions subsequently used the technology to turn three young human children in Headmasters in defense of Earth.

Cybertronian Headmasters possess numerous energy-manipulating superpowers. They are able to freely exchange Transtectors with their fellow Headmasters to increase their power levels, and can link up with each other in the Head Formation for various destruction results. In contrast, human Headmasters do not possess any of these powers, but have their own natural physical strength and reflexes enhanced many times over by the energies filling their body. Their cellular structures undergo some form of ill-defined holistic transformation which allows them to somehow transform their actual, physical bodies into heads. However, unlike organic Headmasters in other continuities, they do not have to undergo any permanent alteration - they are capable of "turning off" their powers and becoming normal human beings with ease, the only drawback being that they are unable to remove the Master-Braces that give them their powers.

Dreamwave comics
Though only glimpsed in profile art the Headmaster heads here seem to be larger "mecha" that the human partners pilot.

Energon Cartoon
stub

IDW Comics continuity
The Headmaster technology is a product of the shadowy organization known as the Machination, possibly using technology developed by Scorponok on the planet Nebulos. Following a tip offered to him by Swindle, Ultra Magnus found schematics for enhancing a biological entity with Cybertronian technology, in effect producing a "transformable man." Magnus was able to determine that Nebulan businessman Mo Zarak had been subjected to this process, shortly before Scorponok fled the premises.

Soon after, the Machination captured Sunstreaker and Hunter O'Nion. They dismantled Sunstreaker, and subjected Hunter to an extensive regimen of surgery and implants. Subsequently they attempted to brainwash him into one of their soldiers. Thus far, all Headmasters in the IDW technology have been non-sentient, guided by their human pilots. As well, all of them have been replicas of Sunstreaker.

Limitations
Without their head, a Transformer Headmaster is at a severe disadvantage. Most Autobots and Decepticons are shown entering a kind of stasis lock when their heads disconnect from their robot modes, often seeming sluggish and able to perform only the most basic of functions. In their alternate modes, however, a Headmaster seems no different from any other Transformer: if, perhaps, a little more dangerous. With another intelligent being to help with the task of driving, flying, or shooting, the Headmaster is able to focus more clearly on tactics, strategy, or just the task at hand, freeing up considerable processing power from more mundane requirements. This makes a Headmaster capable of extreme multi-tasking and amazingly rapid decision-making, if the two partners have similar attitudes and mindsets.
