Over New York City, [[Laserbeak (G1)|Laserbeak]] flies into the [[Decepticon]]s' underground base. The [[Constructicon (G1)|Constructicon]]s are digging a hole in the ceiling and the Autobots don't have a clue. After hours of digging, the Constructicons manage to sink the Empire State building underground.
The [[Autobot]]s finally get wind of this and head to the city. [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]], [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]], [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]] and [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]] plan to meet the rest of the Autobots at Central Park. However, Laserbeak spots them and reports back to [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]]. He plans to give the Autobots a surprising welcome.

At Central Park, the Autobots are ambushed by Soundwave and his crew whilst underground the Constructicons inform Megatron that they're underneath Optimus Prime. Megatron orders them to dig while Optimus Prime is fighting [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]]. Taken by surprise, Prime falls into the Decepticons' underground base where Megatron severs his motor relays, making him powerless. Megatron then threatens the remaining Autobots that unless they leave he will melt the [[Prime (rank)|Autobot leader]] down to scrap. He also shows them his master plan, which is to rebuild New York into New Cybertron. The Constructicons raise the Empire State building back up, but now it looks like a Cybertronian fortress. Forced to leave the city, the Autobots are gloomy until [[Spike Witwicky|Spike]] comes up with a plan to get into the city undetected.

Seemingly victorious, Megatron gloats over Prime's still body. However, Megatron is still worried that Optimus Prime might try something and orders [[Hook]] to disassemble him, which he does with a handy <strike>[[starwars:Lightsaber|ligthsaber]]</strike> energy blade. After Optimus is turned into a pile of parts, Megatron picks up his head and reactives Optimus so he can gloat. Prime responds that even though he's in pieces he will still fight. Prime then activates his arms and trips up Megatron. Megatron orders the Constructicons to dispose of Prime's body, but he gets to keep the head.

Meanwhile Spike, Bumblebee, Ratchet, [[Hound (G1)|Hound]] and [[Mirage (G1)|Mirage]] enter the City through the sewers in the hope of rescuing Prime undetected. The scene then changes to the Constructicons who are very pleased with themselves for what they did with Prime's left over body parts. They have special plans for his right arm and weapon.

While scanning for Prime, Hound is confused because his scans show Prime was behind them when before he was ahead. Mirage then spots a giant robot alligator (dubbed the Alligatorcon) and the Autobots run away. They trap it in a train and send it and the train packing. When they reach the underground base they find Prime's head and reattach his circuits so he can speak. Prime then activates his legs remotely to come to him and the rest of the Autobots figure out that the [[Alligatorcon]] was made up of Prime's parts. After capturing it, Ratchet reassembles Prime, minus the right arm. Now that Optimus is safe the Autobots attack. The Decepticons have turned half of New York city into New Cybertron, complete with killer [[Battle Taxi|taxis]], and they're using Prime's arm as a weapon on top of their fortress. The taxis go for Bumblebee, [[Sideswipe (G1)|Sideswipe]], and [[Sunstreaker]], but Prime runs them down.

After breaking through the Decepticon defenses, Optimus Prime, Ironhide and Ratchet plan to scale the fortress to reclaim Prime's arm. Bumblebee and Spike plan to help by distracting Megatron and Soundwave. Megatron orders an air strike, but when [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] is downed, the Constructicons become [[Devastator]] and he follows Prime's team up the building. Meanwhile, Spike and Bumblebee manage to sneak in and annoy Megatron, by calling him Megaklutz, and tricking him into destroying the device that controlled Prime's arm. Outside Devastator captures Prime and knocks Ironhide and Ratchet into the fortress. [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] then comments that the whole thing reminded him of King Kong as he tried to assist with his remote controlled helicopters. Spike then informs Prime that his arm is no longer controlled by Megatron in which Prime uses this opportunity to use against Devastator. After Devastator gets hit Prime falls but is saved by Ironhide and Ratchet and as usual the Decepticons retreat.

Now the city is saved, Prime is back together and Bumblebee got a souvenir (a 'I heart NY' bumper sticker). The Autobots [[roll out]] and return home.

==Detailed synopsis==

An unidentified meteor impacts with the Earth, and [[Chip Chase]] asks the Autobots to investigate. Fearing that its energy potential could be used by the Decepticons, [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] calls in the Dinobots for help.

At Decepticon HQ, [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] is watching video footage of the Dinobots and is raging about how the dim-witted robots have defeated his warriors time and again. Megatron orders [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] to find their weaknesses.

After the meteor crashlands, the Autobots take a sample back to the Ark and leave the Dinobots to guard the crash site. Impressed that they are following orders, Prime decides to order Ratchet and Wheeljack to build two more Dinobots, with Spike and Chip's help.

At the meteor site, Soundwave scans the Dinobots' brains while in hiding and reports back to Megatron. The Decepticon leaders declares [[Grimlock (G1)|Grimlock]] is arrogant, [[Slag (G1)|Slag]] is violent, and [[Sludge (G1)|Sludge]] is stupid. He vows to use those weaknesses against the Dinobots.

Megatron's forces arrive at the meteorite's location, and after the Dinobots trash the [[Seeker]]s, Megatron arrives and feigns humility. He wonders aloud why the Dinobots, as powerful as they are, follow a weaker leader such as Optimus Prime. Because of Megatron's powerful logic, Grimlock and the Dinobots are convinced to rebel against Prime, and the [[Decepticon]]s take the Meteorite.

At the [[Ark (G1)|Autobot base]], Prime and [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]] oversee construction of two new Dinobots: [[Snarl (G1)|Snarl]] and [[Swoop (G1)|Swoop]]. During this, [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] discovers the meteorite's energy is highly unstable. Trailbreaker manages to encase the fragment in a forcefield just before it explodes. Fearing a huge explosion, Optimus Prime rushes out alone to warn the Dinobots.

At the base, Wheeljack has Snarl and Swoop do a test run of their powers. Bluestreak, Ironhide, Sideswipe and Prowl attempt to stop the new Dinobots, but get their cans soundly kicked.

Prime arrives at the crash site and is attacked by the Dinobots. Though Optimus puts up a good fight, the [[Prime (rank)|Autobot leader]] is unable to defeat the Dinobots by himself and is knocked out. However, Grimlock doesn't kill him or let the others hurt Prime further, a restraint that Prime attributes to their Autobot training. The Dinobots instead take Prime to the Decepticons.

At Autobot HQ, Spike and Chip are concerned because Optimus hasn't reported in. Teletraan 1 alerts Wheeljack that the meteorite has been moved and is about ready to blow. Snarl and Swoop are sent to stop it.

While the Decepticons form [[Energon cube]]s from the unstable meteorite energy, [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] grows concerned by the meteorite's unstable nature. When Grimlock, Slag and Sludge arrive, Megatron is angered that they didn't kill Prime, but is soon distracted as the Energon cubes detonate.

Swoop and Snarl arrive. The two new Dinobots fight the old Dinobots to a standstill in a vicious battle. During this, the meteorite visually destabilizes and just before it explodes, Prime pushes Grimlock to safety.

Realizing that Prime is both strong and has concern for his troops, Grimlock orders the Dinobots to attack Megatron. The Decepticons retreat, and Grimlock asks for Prime's forgiveness as the other Autobots arrive. However, Optimus Prime merely declares that the meteorite menace is over and they should go home.

* When Trailbreaker deploys his force field to contain the meteor fragment's blast, instead of just projecting it, he does a really goofy looking spin.

* During the scene in Decepticon headquarters where Megatron berates his troops for their humiliating defeat at the hands of the Dinobots, Starscream is coloured as Thundercracker in several shots.

*Optimus blasts a fragment off of the meteor at night, transforms during the day, leaves the scene around dawn, and drives off into the dead of night.

* When Soundwave goes back to the Decepticon base after scanning the Dinobots, the Decepticon insignia on his chest is not shown.

* When the Decepticons attack the Dinobots guarding the meteorite, Slag's Autobot insignia is not shown in one shot.

* In the same scene, when Grimlock asks Slag if he likes to fight, Sludge answers with Slag's voice.

* When the Dinobots are attacking Optimus Prime, in one shot Grimlock's torso is colored gray instead of yellow. When they investigate his body after blasting him, Slag's head is coloured grey.

* When the Dinobots take Optimus to Megatron, Starscream is colored in Thundercracker's colors. A little later, when they are escaping the meteorite explosion, Starscream is colored as Thundercracker again.

* Slag can be clearly seen wearing a jetpack on his back when the Dinobots leave to deliver Optimus Prime to Megatron, despite it being previously established that the Dinobots can fly without such equipment.

* Apparently the Decepticons are still pretty steamed about the Dinobots utterly slagging them two episodes ago ("[[S.O.S. Dinobots]]"). Seriously guys, let it go.

===Miscellaneous trivia===

* In an earlier draft of this episode's script, it was not Chip who discovered the meteorite, but an original character named Doctor Lynn Hyashi.

*Grimlock's head has been redesigned. However, the old design remained in the comics all the way until Grimlock took a bath in nucleon. {{storylink|Still Life!}} The second head design would be used in all incarnations from then on.

* Optimus Prime warns the others to stay back from the meteor... then proceeds to shoot the potentially dangerous meteor to obtain a sample. Couldn't they just have broken a piece off in some other manner?

* Huffer has evidently changed his tune about the Dinobots, as he helps build Snarl and Swoop in this episode.

* Snarl is the only Dinobot who actually uses the word "I". All the others always say "me".
