Synopsis
Soundwave summons Megatron to the control room, saying that Laserbeak and Buzzsaw have detected massive energy readings underwater. The Decepticons investigate and encounter the Sub-Atlanticans, a race who hope to conquer the surface world one day. Megatron negotiates a deal with Nergill, King of Sub-Atlantica, offering Decepticon military technology in exchange for access to their geothermal storehouses. Starscream distrusts the Sub-Atlanticans, who communicate with each other telepathically.

Near the Autobot base, Spike, Bumblebee, and Hound are playing a game of football with the Dinobots. Wheeljack arrives before the Dinobots accidentally kill anyone, telling them there is a massive energy reading emanating from near the Decepticon base. Optimus Prime dispatches Bumblebee, Brawn, Hound, and Wheeljack to investigate, with Spike tagging along. The Decepticons and Sub-Atlanticans attack and take Wheeljack prisoner. After raising the city from the bottom of the ocean, the Decepticons and Sub-Atlanticans prepare to attack Washington, D.C. as a sign of their new alliance. Nergill communicates with his soldiers, telling Megatron that they will imprison Wheeljack in his dungeons. However, at Starscream's orders, Soundwave unscrambles the message and learns that Wheeljack is to be taken to their laboratory to develop weapons against the Autobots and Decepticons alike.

The Autobots head for Washington, hoping to stop the Decepticons and Sub-Atlanticans. Prime has Spike and Bumblebee head for Sub-Atlantica, hoping to rescue Wheeljack, while the Autobot leader takes the others to Washington. The Sub-Atlanticans raise a force field over Washington, trapping the Autobots inside. In Sub-Atlantica, Nergill has developed a magnetic dysfunction ray which will shut down Transformers; he's tested it on Wheeljack, leaving him immobile. Starscream discovers this and is shot by Nergill, who learns that it is less effective on Decepticons. As Nergill leaves, Starscream attempts to drain power from Wheeljack, but Bumblebee and Spike stop arrive just in time to stop the Decepticon and restore Wheeljack.

Nergill strolls into Washington, with Wheeljack, Bumblebee and Spike sneaking in behind him. Nergill uses the disruptor to defeat Prime's team of Autobots, bringing the battle to an end. As the Sub-Atlanticans secure the Capitol building, his soldiers ask when to move against the Decepticons, but Nergill decides to wait a little while longer. Meanwhile, Megatron (sitting at the Lincoln Memorial) tells Thundercracker that they will deal with the Sub-Atlanticans soon enough.

Wheeljack calls in the Dinobots, who manage to penetrate the force field and come to blows with the Decepticons. As Megatron and Grimlock grapple, Nergill is on the verge of shooting them both until Starscream arrives and bashes Nergill aside, declaring that he is now an enemy. Grimlock grabs the disruptor and destroys it, causing the Autobots to revive. The Decepticons and Sub-Atlanticans retreat back to their own city, with the Autobots in pursuit.

Back at Sub-Atlantica, Megatron demands an answer to Starscream's treason charge against Nergill, but Nergill informs him that the Autobots are coming. They invade the city, and the Dinobots begin smashing everything in sight.

Nergill decides to destroy the city, hoping to destroy the Transformers as well. Spike, Wheeljack, and Bumblebee follow, hoping to stop Nergill, with Rumble and Ravage in pursuit. The two Mini-Cassettes realize Nergill's intentions, and Rumble tries to bury him in rubble, but it's not enough. Wheeljack likewise tries to stop the sub-aquatic king, but it's too late. Nergill throws a device into his energy containers, which starts a chain reaction that begins to destroy the city. The Decepticons retreat; Prime orders the Autobots to clear out, then rescues Wheeljack's team (and strangely finds Grimlock there as well). Prime and the others escape, watching from the nearby sea as the Sub-Atlanticans and their home disappear under the waves. Prime says they probably won't see Nergill again for a long time.
Notes
Animation or technical glitches
* Someone mistook the strange glint of sunlight reflecting off of Buzzsaw for a laser beam, and inserted a Decepticon laser sound effect accordingly.
* Soundwave has some extra black shading around his eyeband as he reports to Megatron.
* As Megatron pontificates about "an underwater city of such size", a strangely-timed edit has the scene cut to an exterior shot of Decepticon Headquarters, as if that were supposed to be the underwater city in question. If it's meant to be an establishing shot, why isn't it at the beginning of the scene?
* The Decepticon Headquarters docking tower appears to be listing about 15 degrees or so as it emerges from the water, as if a stock view from one point-of-view angle was copied onto a new background drawn at a different point-of-view angle.
*When the Decepticons leave their base, Starscream's jet mode has a yellow underbelly. For an animation error, it's unusually appropriate!
* As he orders Soundwave to unscramble Nergill's message, Starscream's left pectoral is colored gray instead of red, and isn't really drawn in correctly, almost as if the animators intended his arm to be covering it during the scene.

* Considering how bright and well-lit everything is, Sub-Atlantica must be in about 25 feet of water.
* As Hound's camper roof unfolds, his turret gun clips right through it.
* Bumblebee appears to be using one of the Sub-Atlanticans' weapons as he fires at Starscream and company.
* During Wheeljack's "But nobody else is gonna follow you either" line, only the front side of his "ears" flash.
* Soundwave is drawn with a totally transparent tape door as Starscream has him unscramble Nergill's second message. It appears to be a deliberate choice to show the cassette mechanism within, but it conflicts with the usual white coloration of his chest panel.
* As Megatron makes his dramatic proclamation of Sub-Atlantica's destination, the bottom of Starscream's cockpit cowling is colored yellow instead of gray.
* Starscream is shown among the Decepticons leaving Sub-Atlantica to conquer D.C. The very next shot shows him lurking within the city as Nergill exposits to himself.
* As the Autobots drive toward Washington, Optimus mispronounces their foes' names as "Sub-Atlanta-cans".
* The "highway" that the Autobots use to drive to D.C. has an "exit" for the Chesapeake Bay that's more like a T-shaped intersection. Bumblebee somehow manages to negotiate it at full speed without flying out of control.
* The animation is very inconsistent as to whether the little red bulb on the Sub-Atlanticans' headwear is supposed to flash when they talk.
* The Dome Of Invulnerability guy is missing his telepathic waves as he refuses Megatron's order.
* Laser bolts bounce right off the Washington Monument without leaving so much as a burn mark. With weapons that ineffectual, it's no wonder nobody ever dies in this show!
* Laserbeak's attack on Hound is strangely truncated; Laserbeak fires non-glowing lasers, and then suddenly vanishes out of the shot.
* The shot that Hound fires at Laserbeak doesn't line up with his gun barrel.
* The electrical bolts enveloping Starscream right after Nergil blasts him are not animated to jigger for the first few seconds.
* While calling to warn Optimus about Nergil's weapon the autobot insignia on his roof/chest is upside down.
* The inside of Sludge's robot-mode mouth is white when he says "Alright!"
* When the Dinobots break through the force field, Starscream is among the group fighting them off, even though he is still lying inert within Sub-Atlantica at this point.

* Before Megatron bashes the Washington Monument, Prime and Prowl are standing there watching. After Megatron bashes the Monument, the shot returns to the same Prowl-and-Prime angle. But Prowl is gone, and the earlier artwork of Prime is still there watching as another Prime runs to catch the monument!
* The Autobots shown entering the city and attacking Megatron include Prime, Hound, Brawn, Prowl, Ironhide, and Sunstreaker. Sunstreaker and Ironhide disappear after the battle begins; only Hound, Brawn, Prowl and Prime are shown being disabled by Nergill and being revived later on. Ironhide finally shows up again after the battle is over; Ratchet and Trailbreaker appear out of nowhere as the Autobots roll out of D.C. During the Sub-Atlantica battle, Sideswipe appears (also out of nowhere), and Sunstreaker finally reappears.
* Slag's face is white instead of red as he exits Prime's trailer. In the next shot, his whole head is gray.
* A strangely angled shot, looking up from below the water, is supposed to show Prime, Wheeljack, Bumblebee and Grimlock swimming out of Sub-Atlantica. It's very easy to mistake it for a shot showing them flying through the air. They don't move any of their limbs, they move across the screen very rapidly, and the water itself is backlit by the sunset colored sky.<!-- In fact, this editor for many years thought it was supposed to be the other four Dinobots flying out of the city. -->
* Spike's declaration that "Nergill's gone!" doesn't mean much, since the animation never actually makes it clear that Wheeljack carried him out of Sub-Atlantica.
* What are Prime and the others standing on after they evacuate Sub-Atlantica? Even Spike is above water almost to his waist!
* The sign that the Autobots past says 'New York' (Right Arrow) 'Baltimore' (Forward Arrow)and Washington DC (Left Arrow). It is also
Backwards.

Continuity errors
* Megatron refers to Laserbeak and Buzzsaw as "vultures". They're supposed to be condors.
* If Nergill "communicates telepathically", as Soundwave claims, why is his mouth moving all the time?

* Superhuman Spike:
** Spike can survive in the "deepest part of the Atlantic ocean" wearing only a bathing suit and using a simple oxygen tank and goggles. Amazing that he isn't crushed under the weight of the ocean or frozen to death.
** Spike can somehow speak clearly to the Autobots without removing the mouthpiece for his breathing apparatus from his mouth; hell, he can even perform this trick underwater.
* How can Bumblebee calculate Sub-Atlantica's destination from watching it sail along the coast for like two seconds? It could be going anywhere!
* The "conquest" of Washington is incredibly half-hearted. The Decepticons and the squiddy guys run around in the street for a bit, scare some tourists, blow up a couple of cars, and put up a force field. About the only conquery thing they do is set up a giant vacuum tube computer in the capital building.

* The Sub-Atlanticans have to wear aquatic masks over their faces when they're on dry land. Yet they don't wear them inside their city, which appears to be just as water-free as the surface.
* The water-based Sub-Atlanticans don't think to create a force field that extends under the water?
* More an omission than an error, but it's never explained just what Starscream was trying to do to Wheeljack.
* Wheeljack says that they'd better warn Prime about the dysfunction ray... then proceeds to say something totally vague and uninformative ("There is great danger! Nergill must be stopped!")
* How many times do cartoons have to be told that it's not a force field if it shatters like glass? (Does this mean that the streets of D.C. are now covered with piles of shattered force field bits?)
* Some "dome of invulnerability". The Dinobots get through it in about five seconds flat.
* Starscream's third appearance in DC isn't an animation error; he's central to the plot! How did he get free of the dysfunction ray?!
* Who knew that destroying a gun could un-shoot the gun's prior victims? That's exactly what happens — Grimlock destroys the dysfunction gun, and suddenly the Autobots are un-dysfunctionalized!
* Fire under water? really?

District of Columbia errors
* Despite the Autobots being near the Chesapeake Bay, the backgrounds show huge rocks and expanses of sand, as if they were in the desert.
* As Hound fights near the reflecting pool, there's lots of tall buildings behind him. D.C. doesn't really have many tall buildings, certainly not near the Mall.
* Both the plot and the animation seem to imply that DC sits on a major body of water. Or did Sub-Atlantica just sail right up the Potomac?
* The Lincoln Memorial is strangely Megatron-sized. Also, the statue part apparently just comes right off. Who knew?
* Somehow, the rotational forces involved in the Washington Monument's partial fall do not cause the masonry structure to snap like a dry twig.
* Apparently, damaged masonry structures like the Washington Monument can be melted back together. Who knew?

** Two groups of Autobots drive on the water, using the water ski-like hydrofoils that showed up in several other episodes. (At most points, the hydrofoils are not shown, but Bumblebee's can be glimpsed after the first commercial break.)
** Hound has a folding sunroof. That is awesome. His toy did not. That is not awesome.
** Bumblebee has a bizarre direction calculator thing that comes out of his back.
** Shoulder artillery: Wheeljack uses a missile from his shoulder launcher to seal the cave shut behind the other Autobots. The only other time he actually fires missiles (instead of laser beams from the tip of the missile) is in "A Plague of Insecticons".
* Grimlock also grumbled about having to save the Autobots in "Day of the Machines". It'll finally come to a head in "Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 1".
* Hey, that shot of Soundwave ejecting Laserbeak during the DC battle sure looks familiar... why, it's copied from "Transport to Oblivion"! Again!
* In the Decepticon campaign of Transformers The Game and Dark of the Moon, Megatron also takes the Lincoln Memorial throne as his own.

Real world references
* As the obligatory "conquer Washington" episode (G.I. Joe had one too), "Atlantis, Arise!" features several D.C. landmarks, including the Washington Monument, the White House (where the Decepticons first land), the US Capitol Building, and the Lincoln Memorial and its Reflecting Pool, as well as a mention of the Chesapeake Bay.
* Star Wars sound effects:
** The gouts of fire that burst from the sea as SubAtlantica sinks are soundtracked with various explosions from the Death Star battle, possibly exploding X-Wing fighters.

Trivia
* This episode is one of a handful that begins with a (rather pointless) narrative voiceover from Victor Caroli.
* They have in fact seen the last of Nergill.

Slowed Down Lines
When played back at a slower speed, Nergill says telepathically to his people:
* "Never mind. Put your weapons away. We don't want to put them on guard."
* "Take no aggressive action. They suspect."
Shockwave has destroyed the Autobots, and begins his plans for the conquest of Earth.

Synopsis
Within the Ark, Shockwave observes a number of human television programs, and judges Earth's natives as quite primitive. As he walks past the deactivated Autobots, now strung from the ceiling for use as spare parts, he concludes that conquest of the planet "will be a simple task indeed."

Elsewhere in the vessel, the poisoned Decepticons are being revived. Shockwave explains to Megatron that, in light of this humiliating defeat, his leadership was clearly faulty, and it is only logical for Shockwave to take command. The weakened Megatron is in no condition to disagree... yet. Shockwave flies off to undertake his first conquest.

Meanwhile, as Sparkplug recovers from his heart attack, he makes Buster promise not to have anything more to do with the Transformers. Ratchet takes Buster back to the Ark to say his good-byes, only to discover that the Decepticons have taken over. Buster convinces Ratchet to stay outside while he sneaks in to investigate. Buster discovers the deactivated Autobots and despairs. When he realizes that Optimus Prime is not among them, he holds out hope, only to have that hope destroyed when he discovers Prime's detached head located in another room. Prime, still functional, informs Buster that he is the Autobots' last hope.

Errors
* Numerous errors occur in the slabs-of-beef scene of the Autobots hanging from the ceiling:
** Several Autobots are randomly colored like Gears, including Trailbreaker, Ironhide and Bumblebee. Cliffjumper is colored like Bumblebee, and Windcharger has Brawn's colors.
** Ironhide, meanwhile, has inexplicably gone from being pretty much okay at the end of last issue, to being a legless torso stuck on the end of a pole, with half of one arm missing, and the other arm bizarrely deformed.
** Trailbreaker's car-mode hood is shown cracked and shattered as if it were a windshield. His arm isn't dangling over his head like all the other Autobots, either.
** Jazz has a totally made-up head (colored red) and a strange, malproportioned arm design.
** Bluestreak is colored like Prowl
** Wheeljack is missing his "ears". His "mask" is bigger than the rest of his head, his missile launcher is strangely foreshortened, and his chest is colored blue instead of white.
* In a flashback, one of the Decepticons flying to their fortress appears to be Shockwave, who had not yet rejoined the Decepticons. The same scene features Decepticons flying in robot mode, which none of Megatron's troops can do.
* Sunstreaker is colored blue and red when Shockwave blasts him, and is missing a leg. He's colored like Sideswipe when he's later seen lying on the floor.
* The severe damage inflicted on Mirage last issue is nowhere to be seen — he's got both his arms and his chest/head are intact. To be fair, this same damage disappeared before the previous issue even concluded.
* Skywarp is missing a wing as he drags Brawn; he's also colored like Thundercracker. In the same panel, Shockwave's upper arms are silver-white instead of purple (portions of his shoulders are silver-white in numerous other panels as well.) Same panel again: Soundwave's body is his usual purple, but his head is blue.
* Frenzy and Rumble are both blue when they're standing guard outside the Ark. When Buster sneaks past them, one of them is purple and pink.
* Ratchet has the same blue-chest, red-shoulders color scheme as in issue #3. The blue chest is especially egregious since the same prominent area is white when he's an ambulance in the previous panel.

Items of note
* First Appearences: G.B. Blackrock, Josie Beller (not as Circuit Breaker).
* Cameos: on television: Jackie Gleason, Art Carney, Audrey Meadows (these 3 not in UK reprint, see below), Shumway, Monty Hall, soap opera stars, sports announcer (voice only), #8, Otis Parsley; dead Autobots: Bumblebee, Cliffjumper, Windcharger, Huffer, Gears, Wheeljack, Ironhide, Bluestreak, Prowl, Hound, Trailbreaker, Sideswipe, Jazz, Brawn, Mirage; healing Decepticons: Thundercracker, Ravage, Starscream; flashback: Big Red; Sunstreaker, hospital employees, Frenzy, Rumble.
* According to a text box in US issue #4, this story was originally going to be drawn by the team of "Vince Giarrano, penciling superstar-in-the-making" and "Brad Joyce, inker extraordinaire". This did not come to pass, and while Joyce did eventually ink issue #10, Giarrano would never work on the series.
* In the US version of the story, the first page illustrates a scene from the classic TV series The Honeymooners. However, in the UK reprint, a publicity still from the contemporary (at the time) series V was used instead.
* The entire issue is devoid of any standard comic sound effects such as "BUTHROOM" or "KA-BLAM"
* Starting with page 15 of the US comic, the speech balloons for Transformers characters changed style abruptly from rectangular boxes to rounded balloons that sometimes had zig zags in the part indicating which character was speaking. This type of speech balloon would continue to be used through issue #9.
*Beginning with this issue, the cover corner box depicts a triumphant shot of Optimus Prime (somewhat contradictory to the contents of this issue). The pose is different from that which appeared on issue #1, which was a character model pose. This image would be used for 24 more issues, along with the adaptation of The Transformers: The Movie and the first issue of The Headmasters, before returning for issues 50-75.
* Issue #22 of the UK comic included "Robot War", the first in an irregular series of text features summarising events seen in the comic so far.

Buster Witwicky is in danger because of his special "gift" from Optimus Prime.

Synopsis
Buster is still confused by his new powers, but conceals the secret of them from his father. Jessie comes around looking to patch things up, and the two go for a bike ride.

At Blackrock Aerospace Assembly Plant Number One, Optimus Prime has not yet given life to Shockwave's latest soldier, Jetfire. Shockwave suspects that Optimus Prime no longer possesses the Creation Matrix, and sets about discovering what has happened to it by probing the memories of Frenzy. This leads him straight to Buster.

The Autobots are listening in on this discovery, and send Bumblebee and Bluestreak to protect Buster. The Autobots first visit Sparkplug at his garage, and explain the danger. Sparkplug wants nothing more to do with the Autobots, and refuses to help; but when he goes to find Buster himself, Bluestreak and Bumblebee tail him back to Buster and Jessie.

This unfortunately leads the Decepticons right to their location as well. Bluestreak easily defeats the spying Laserbeak, but Shockwave dispatches the pre-programmed Jetfire to retrieve Buster. While Jetfire makes short work of the Autobots, Bumblebee realizes that Jetfire is not alive, and that Buster can control the Decepticon jet. Revealing his secret, Buster disassembles Jetfire with a thought. Bumblebee and Buster make plans to use Jetfire to aid in the rescue of Optimus Prime.

Shockwave announces his intention to terminate Optimus Prime. An Autobot convoy is already on the way; they can only hope they are not too late.
* Although this issue features Jetfire as its centerpiece, he is still not a sentient being, but rather just a lifeless construct.

* In UK issue #37's letter page, Soundwave revealed that Transformers use various types of droids, including Mechodrones for menial tasks and Combat droids for guard duty. Guardian was one such combat droid. He also suggested that makers of knockoff Shockwave toys might be in for an unpleasant visit by the then Decepticon leader. (But was it simple jealousy, or retool-induced trigger envy?)

* On page 4, some of the jets being built resemble Ramjet, Thrust and Dirge.
The Autobots must stop the Decepticons from sending a message to Cybertron. But the Decepticons have a rather large surprise for them...

Synopsis
Shockwave succeeds in creating the first of his new generation of Decepticons—the Constructicons. They immediately depart with Soundwave on their first mission, to build a transdimensional radio wave scrambler with which to contact their home planet of Cybertron.

Prowl gives G.B. Blackrock a tour of the Ark. Along the way, they encounter the homesick Huffer, who's been focused on repairing the interstellar comm system instead of his primary assignment. Blackrock offers the Autobots a way to spy on the Decepticons within Blackrock's aerospace plant using a bugged telephone system. Using this system, they learn of the Constructicons' mission, and send a team to intercept them.

Elsewhere, Sparkplug Witwicky returns home from his heart attack, and is surprised to find that Buster has actually cleared out the repair shop's entire backlog of automobiles. Buster wonders how to explain to his father his recent experience with Optimus Prime, and the subsequent powers he's gained.

Near the site of the Constructicon project, trucker Bomber Bill looks forward to a return home after a long assignment, but his truck is stolen by the Constructicons as raw material for the scrambler. Determined to get home, Bomber Bill attempts to follow the thieves, and meets the Autobots on the way. Huffer offers a lift to the human.

The Autobots attack the Constructicons, who reveal their ability to combine into the super-robot, Devastator. The others distract the slow-witted giant, but Huffer hesitates to destroy the scrambler, which he sees as a rare chance to contact home. The delay is enough time for Soundwave to charge the scrambler and begin sending his signal to Cybertron; Bomber Bill destroys the scrambler, but most of Soundwave's message goes through. Their mission accomplished, the Decepticons retreat. Huffer thanks Bomber Bill for his help, but laments that while the trucker can go home now, he can't.

At the aerospace plant, Shockwave discovers that Optimus Prime may no longer possess the Creation Matrix. If this proves true, Shockwave no longer has any reason to allow Prime to live. The Autobots, listening in from the Ark, are helpless.
* On page 4, the text says Scavenger transforms into a "truck crane". The art is also strange. Either Scavenger passes through a Hook-like form before becoming his usual shovel or there is another shovel Constructicon sitting next to him.
* On page 13, Ironhide is colored like Ratchet, and on page 18, he's colored like Devastator.
* On page 20, Soundwave's head is totally wrong.
* During the battle with Devastator, Bluestreak is colored like Bumblebee.
* When Shockwave created the Constructicons, he made their brain modules first and only created their bodies this issue. Why does he create Jetfire's body first, before knowing that he'll be able to put life into it?

Items of note
* First Appearances: Scrapper, Hook, Scavenger, Mixmaster, Long Haul, Bonecrusher, Devastator.
* Jetfire is introduced here, although only as an unfinished, lifeless shell.
* This is the last issue in which Prime's severed head is drawn with its antennae detached, with tubes and wires connecting them to the head. In the next two issues, it is drawn with the standard "wires holding the head" shown in issues #5 and #6.
* Page orders were changed for the UK printing to provide a more effective "cliffhanger" ending for issue #35. US page 11 was printed before pages 9 and 10. A caption was also removed from the last panel of page 10. The upshot of this change was that Bomber Bill was introduced 2 pages earlier in the UK version of this issue than in the US.
* Issue #36 of the UK comic included "Robot War II", the second in an irregular series of text features summarising events seen in the comic so far.

References
* Sunstreaker is noted as being badly damaged, likely as a reference to issue #5, when Shockwave destroyed his body as an example to the detained Megatron.
The Autobots, now restored, strike a deal with G.B. Blackrock. But one of his former employees has other plans.

Synopsis
G.B. Blackrock, driving practice laps on a race track, is interrupted by an army officer, who expresses concern over Blackrock's plans to unveil a new weapon designed to destroy the Transformers. Blackrock shrugs him off, and goes to visit Josie Beller in her hospital room to update her on the situation. She, in turn, shows Blackrock some technology she's been working on from her hospital bed, causing Blackrock to worry that she may put herself in another dangerous situation in her desire for revenge against the robots who crippled her.

These fears are warranted when Josie escapes from her hospital room, and shows up in Blackrock's office that night, revealing herself as Circuit Breaker, wearing a metal suit designed to compensate for her damaged nervous system and granting her offensive capability against any mechanical form. Blackrock orders her to forget the whole thing and get back to the hospital; Circuit Breaker ignores him and says she's going to do what she has to.

The Autobots have been revived after their imprisonment aboard the Ark, with Prowl in command. They seek a new solution to their fuel shortage, and Jazz takes Wheeljack and goes to strike a deal with G.B. Blackrock. Kidnapping the billionaire, Jazz offers to provide him with protection from the Decepticons in exchange for fuel. After a few confused moments, Blackrock agrees.

Starscream is feeling mutinous after receiving word that the Autobots are online again and that Megatron has disappeared. Shockwave sends him and Frenzy to destroy Blackrock's weapon, allowing them to blow off some steam.

Sparkplug Witwicky's customers are also feeling mutinous, as Buster can only offer fumbling excuses and delays while his father remains in the hospital. Despite tinkering with the automobiles in for repairs, it's all a mystery to him. But another headache-seizure grips him, and in a flash, everything becomes clear — the structure, the problem, everything. Buster repairs an engine block with merely a thought.

Later that day, the unveiling of Blackrock's secret weapon is sabotaged by Circuit Breaker, in an effort to get him to announce her as his intended weapon. The Decepticons attack just then. Jazz and Wheeljack transform, intending to make good on their promise to provide Blackrock with protection; but Circuit Breaker, unable to discern between Autobot and Decepticon, severely injures Wheeljack. Between her and Jazz, the Decepticons are driven off, though Jazz is damaged. Although Circuit Breaker spares Jazz at Blackrock's pleading, she destroys his weapon, and severs her ties with him. Blackrock fears she is the only one to have truly lost the day's battle...
Ratchet recovers the Dinobots, and together they fight Megatron.

Synopsis
Ratchet journeys by shuttle to the Savage Land to locate the Dinobots, who fought Shockwave there shortly after the Ark crash-landed on Earth 4 million years ago. He uses his M.A.R.B. to locate Cybertronian life deep in a tarpit. After a lot of digging, he locates Slag, and uses a memory probe to view the Dinobots' battle with Shockwave, and their subsequent entombment. Slag awakens and, after recognizing Ratchet as an Autobot, readily agrees to help finish the job they'd started: destroying Shockwave.

Shockwave checks in on Megatron, who has been left to guard the Ark alone. Megatron has prepared the head of Optimus Prime for transport to the aerospace plant recently captured by the Decepticons; Shockwave is pleased and comments that he may have to raise his odds-of-having-to-destroy-Megatron calculations.

Shockwave returns to the plant with Optimus Prime's head, effortlessly defeating an Army force that has surrounded the plant. Within, he prepares to begin the construction of a new generation of Decepticons, using the Matrix program within Prime.

Ratchet contacts Megatron, and shows him video footage of the Dinobots defeating Shockwave. With his end of the bargain fulfilled, he arranges for Megatron to meet him on a nearby mountain. When Ratchet arrives, Megatron promptly threatens to kill him. This breaks the bargain... and the hidden Dinobots burst forth from the snow. Turns out Ratchet knew Megatron wouldn't hold up his end of the Rite of Oneness, and the video was from the Dinobots' tussle with Shockwave four million years ago.

But despite the Dinobots' power, Megatron beats them all, leaving Ratchet to face him alone once more. Determined to fight like a warrior, even to the death, Ratchet tries to carry them both over a cliff edge. Though Megatron doesn't budge, the impact weakens the cliff beneath him, and Megatron is sent tumbling away. He transforms into his gun mode in a desperate effort to survive, but disappears into the snow and is not seen again. With Megatron thus defeated, the Ark and the Autobots are free.

Meanwhile, Josie Beller, a series of printed circuit strips laced onto her arm, fires an energy bolt that destroys her hospital room's television. She speculates that she's about ready to check out...
* Megatron still has his off-center insignia. This is so consistent it has to be intentional, but it's unclear why.
* Snarl's actions in the flashback are a very good match for Sludge's character bios. Sludge's toy bio has the lowest intelligence and often the victim of self-inflicted calamities. His Universe profile goes on to say that he often has to be dug out of the rubble he brought down on himself. In the issue, Snarl brings rubble down on the Dinobots and is repeatedly called dumb.
* Shockwave is colored as Megatron for 2 panels in his battle with the Dinobots.
* When Shockwave arrives at the plant, Soundwave is alone. In the next panel, an oddly colored Laserbeak is on his shoulder and appears to speak for Soundwave (whose mouthplate is miscolored also).
* Josie uses her right hand to operate her computer, but a moment later, that arm is paralyzed.
* Although this is advertised as the introduction of the Dinobots, they had actually been introduced in issue #4. This issue features their recovery from the Savage Land in the present day.
* The cover features only Grimlock, Slag and Sludge - without Snarl and Swoop. These same three Dinobots were initially introduced in the animated series S.O.S. Dinobots before their remaining two companions, and the same three only were seen in the commercial animation for the Dinobot toys. Coincidence?
* Optimus Prime transferred the Creation Matrix to Buster Witwicky in "The Worse of Two Evils!," why is Shockwave still able to use it to create new life? Letter columns confirmed that some residual energy remained in Prime's head. This energy was used on the Constructicons, but tapped out before Jetfire could be completed.
