Swoop is the friendliest and most outgoing of the Dinobots. He's surprisingly good natured, kind, and upbeat. Few of his comrades realize this however, as his team's reputation and his alt-form, considered (for some reason) particularly "horrifying" to Transformer aesthetics, makes others wary of getting close enought to learn about the bot himself. Swoop is an excellent aerial combatant and bombardier, and has become skilled at using the fear his alt-mode creates in battle. He considers it his greatest weapon. Like all the Dinobots, Swoop tends to be arrogant, disobedient, and generally disagree with Optimus Prime's leadership style. He's also a bit of a show-off.
Generation 1
:(Note: Events from UK-only stories are in italics.)
On Cybertron, Swoop was once a member of the Autobots' Elite Flying Corps and named Divebomb. After disobeying orders from Optimus Prime he came into battle with the Predacon now called Divebomb, who defeated him and stole his name. What's in a Name? This began a continuing rivalry between the two. Millions of years later on Earth they clashed again intending to finish things between them once and for all, but their respective team mates interfered and the battle went unresolved. Grudge Match!

Swoop was one of the original crew of the Ark. After it crashed, Shockwave came to Earth in pursuit and landed in the Savage Land. The Ark rebuilt Swoop along with Grimlock, Slag, Sludge and Snarl into the Dinobots and sent them to the Savage Land to defeat Shockwave. The Last Stand The battle ended with the Dinobots submerged in a tar pit where they remained until they were dug out by Ratchet millions of years later. Swoop along with the other Dinobots then helped Ratchet defeat Megatron and reclaim the Ark and free the deactivated Autobots within. Repeat Performance!

Upon their return to the Ark however Swoop was badly damaged and thought destroyed when he attempted to fly the booby trapped battle droid Guardian away from the Ark to prevent the explosion from destroying Mount St. Hilary. The Wrath of Grimlock!

In reality he was blown clear and crashed into a nearby lake where he was later found by Professor Morris. The professor had developed a machine capable of transferring his consciousness to a robot allowing him to take control of it. He recovered Swoop’s body and used the machine to take control of him. He used Swoop to attack the Autobots who he had mistakenly assumed were under the control of his company’s competitor G.B. Blackrock. Swoop’s personality eventually broke free of the professor’s control however. The Icarus Theory

Not long after this he went mad due to the burning out of his cybodendrons after being submerged in the tar pit for millions of years. He was subdued and went into a coma like state. This alerted the Autobots the danger that the other Dinobots were in and they set out to find them. Dinobot Hunt!

Swoop later recovered from his coma along with the other Dinobots. Second Generation! He and the other Dinobots left the Ark shortly afterwards to help Sludge save his friend Joy Meadows from both the Decepticons and Swoop’s former tormentor Professor Morris and his new robot Centurion, funded by Triple-I. In the National Interest

Swoop would later battle the future Decepticon Galvatron, being severely beaten in the process. Fallen Angel After the death of Optimus Prime, Swoop helped to battle Trypticon who had been sent from Cybertron by Ratbat to attack the Ark. Having driven Trypticon away Swoop and the Dinobots returned to the Ark where Grimlock was declared Autobot leader. King of the Hill!

Following the return of Optimus Prime as Autobot leader, Swoop and the other Dinobots were critically damaged by the Underbase-powered Starscream. After being repaired by Ratchet using Pretender technology, Grimlock took Swoop and the Dinobots to Hydrus 4 and restored them using Nucleon. This ultimately caused Grimlock to lose the ability to transform but it is not know if Swoop suffered any similar side effects. The Price of Life!

At some point Swoop was sent to Earth to become part of the Earthforce team under the command of Grimlock. He later returned to Cybertron and took part in the battle against Unicron which he survived. On the Edge of Extinction!

Generation 2
Swoop took part in the war against Jhiaxus and his Cybertronian Empire.

Coloring Books
Something angered the normally-gentle Swoop, so he dropped a bomb on it equal to 10,000 pounds of TNT.

Classics
Swoop is part of Grimlock's crew on the Graviton. He is is now a Minicon.

:(Note: The Classics story takes place in a post-Marvel Generation 1 comics universe where neither Generation 2 nor the Marvel UK material happened.)

Animated continuity
:Voice actor: Michael Bell (US), Yoku Shioya (Japan)

While guarding a mysterious meteorite, the original Dinobots, Grimlock, Slag and Sludge, were fooled by Megatron into joining the side of the Decepticons. To counter the threat of their former comrades, the Autobots constructed two new Dinobots; Snarl and Swoop. Snarl and Swoop did battle with the original Dinobots but were only strong enough to force them into a stalemate. The original Dinobots chose to return to the Autobots after their leader, Grimlock, was saved from the exploding meteorite through a selfless act of heroism from Optimus Prime.

Swoop was rarely seen apart from the other Dinobots. Together, they fought the likes of Devastator and moved to a bizarre island (later dubbed Dinobot Island) to hone their skills.

Some time after that, the Dinobots chose to desert the Autobots during their time of need (the Autobots were dying from lack of Cybertonium) and go to Cybertron. All the Dinobots were captured by Shockwave, reprogrammed and forced to work in the cybertonium mines at the planet's organic core. All, that is, except for Swoop. Swoop soon encountered Spike and Carly, the Autobots' human allies, deep within the bowels of the planet. The three teamed up and, after learning a brief history of the Transformer race, freed the Dinobots and returned to Earth with a shipment of Cybertonium.

In 2005, Swoop and the other Dinobots fought Devastator during the battle of Autobot City. They didn't fair too well. They later evacuated the city (reluctantly) when Galvatron attacked. Swoop and the Dinobots became briefly stranded on Quintessa along with Hot Rod and Kup when their ship was shot down. With help from Wheelie, the Dinobots and their friends escaped Quintessa and rescued the remaining Autobots on the Planet of Junk from a horde of confused Junkions. They later engaged Unicron in combat when the Chaos-Bringer attacked Cybertron.

In the year 2006, Swoop and the other Dinobots spent much of their time on Cybertron fishing for robot fish (or organic fish, depending on which shot you're looking at). Swoop and the others briefly ostracized Grimlock when he attained super intelligence. Grimlock eventually returned to normal and was welcomed back among their ranks. Swoop and the Dinobots were also summoned by Primacron's Assistant to do battle with Tornadron, a creation of the villainous Primacron. Swoop failed to defeat the enrgy monster, but Grimlock managed to save the day just in the nick of time.

3H comic continuity
In a distant future of the Beast Wars timeline, the dark warlord known as Shokaract has conquered Cybertron and much of the galaxy. Only a handful of Maximals and Predacons survive to oppose him, under the command of the Predacon Sandstorm. Among them is an ancient warrior known simply as The Veteran. Though never named specifically, it is strongly implied that he is Swoop.

The Veteran's finely honed skills and instincts allowed him to survive an assassination attempt by The Cub, one of Shokaract's servants. Returning in defeat, The Cub was severely wounded as punishment for his failure and left to die in the wilds of Cybertron. Before he could perish, however, Sandstorm's band of rebels recovered him. In an attempt to learn more about Shokaract's plans, The Veteran merged his Spark with that of The Cub, and thus was born the dual-Sparked Windrazor.

Though Windrazor was essentially a new being, within him the Sparks of The Veteran and The Cub continued to grapple for control and dominance of their joined form.
: Japanese ID number: 30

: Swoop's transforms into a robotic pteranodon. Along with his sword, he also comes with two spring-loaded missile launchers, the only Dinobot to have two projectile-launchers (and no non-firing gun to boot.) His beak and tail were rounded for safety reasons. However, the remolding of the tail kept the tail sticker from fitting correctly.

: In Japan, Swoop and the other Dinobots were offered as mail-away items during Operation Combination. Swoop cost 1800 yen (his original retail price, less than the other four) and two robot points.
*Dinobots (Mini-Con Team, 2006)

: Swoop transforms into a robotic pteranodon. His jointing allows him to stand on his hind-feet as well as assume a normal "flying" position. He was only available in a Mini-Con Team set with Knockdown and Terrorsaur.

: This mold was also used to make Reptix.

Trivia
* Swoop was originally a Diaclone Dinosaur Robo Pteranodon type piloted mech. Whoever made Swoop's animation model used this Diaclone toy as a reference, as the Dinobot sports the pre-Transformer's blue chest, and gold lower beak, missiles, and dino feet. Swoop's Marvel comic model has the Transformer toy's red chest, but keeps the gold parts from the Diaclone toy.

* This Diaclone incarnation of Swoop was also used as the model for the "restored" version of the Autobot Ravenus in the Micron Legend "Linkage" mini-comics.

* Thanks to the Robo-Capers strip in the UK Comic, Swoop became the first and possibly only Transformer to defecate in a licensed and approved presentation.

* Swoop and Sludge's absence from Generation 2 has never been fully explained, though rumors of what might have been persist. Recently, packaging art of Swoop in new colors was unearthed, indicating what he might have looked like in the line... but among that art is also a screaming yellow and turquoise Grimlock, colors he was never released in, so who knows.

* The Energon Swoop toy was originally intended to be the original Generation 1 character, and was to be released in Universe. However, it was ultimately shunted into Energon, reportedly for a combination of budgetary concerns and keeping the combination gimmick (since he combines with the packed-in Grimlock to form a super robot) only in the main-line, which had combination as a central theme.

*Swoop is the only original Dinobot who is not technically a dinosaur. Following in his foot-steps are Terranotron, Wal*Mart Sludge, Paddles, and two-thirds of Magmatron.

* There are numerous paint application differences between the Classics Swoop pictured on the cardback and the final product. One possibility is that since the molds were originally intended to be in two-packs rather than three-packs, the number of available paint applications (which are carefully monitored) per piece was larger in the two-pack arrangement, necessitating some omissions for the three-pack release.
On a side note, I think it's interesting that we have some idea of the Transformer race's sense of aesthetics dealing with personal beauty. Swoop's beast mode is considered particularly ugly and terrifying to TF sensibillities as is Grotusque's alt-mode. On the other hand, Lightspeed is considered to be particularly atractive and handsome. Makes me wonder if there's enough for a small "Culture" article on "Transformer Beauty Standards".
A master of mind-controlling "cerebro-shells," the twisted Bombshell plays with the minds of others as a child would a new toy, enthusiastically and recklessly. But there is nothing childlike about the gleeful malice he exposes in forcing his victims into more and more humiliating and destructive acts. Bombshell takes such sadistic joy in the destruction of his victims that even the other Decepticons can be put off, wondering if he wouldn't be just as pleased to play those same "games" with them...

<!--Bombshell can sting a victim with a poison that causes them to shrink -->
Marvel Comics continuity
Dreamwave comics continuity
It's heavily hinted at in Dreamwave continuity that Bombshell's cerebro-shells were the basis for the "Shell Program" later used in Beast Wars to reprogram Maximal protoforms into Predacons. It makes no small manner of sense.
: Japanese ID number: 41

: Bombshell transforms into a robotic boll weevil He doesn't do a whole lot more than that. There is a variation on the mold's insect-mode horn; some versions have a rounded indent on the "top" part near the base-joint, allowing it to fold down further in robot mode.

: In Japan, Bombshell and the other Insecticons were "re-released" as mail-order items from 1987 through 1988. They each cost 880 yen (their normal retail price) and two robot points.

: This mold was used to make the Salvo drones.

*Bombshell (Action Master, 1991)

: Action Master Bombshell is a non-transforming action figure that combines the cartoon model with a few toy-based elements. Interestingly enough, his distinctive head-cannon is no longer on his skull, but his hand-held blaster bears a smiliar design. He comes with his robot scarab partner Needler, who forms a backpack/battle helmet for Bombshell. He was only available in the European markets.

: Bombshell was released as part of the Japanese Transformers Collection series in a set with Kickback and Shrapnel. This set also included three energon cube accessories that fit inside their chest compartments.

: The Bombshell in this set not only lacks the horn-indent of later variations, but has a couple other minor mold-differences to boot.

Merchandise
*Bombshell (Decoy, 1987)

: Bombshell was one of the Decepticon Decoys packed in with smaller carded Transformers toys. While the normal purple version could come on any Decepticon toy, the rarer red version was available only on Throttlebot cards and only for a short while before the switch to purple.

*Destron Hero Collection-22 Set (Decoy multi-pack, 1987)

: The entire run of twenty-two Decepticon Decoys were sold as a single boxed set in Japan, only in purple.

Trivia
* Bombshell --like the other Insecticons-- was originally a Diaclone "Waruder Kabutron" evil alien piloted mech in different colors... which were eventually used when the trio were redecoed for e-Hobby release. This is also the genesis of those opening chest compartments.

*Although Bombshell's alternate mode is a beetle, the cartoon sometimes depicted him eating through the tip of his horn, as if he was a weevil.

*In the Anime series Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann, the Ganmen (the head-shaped mecha that are piloted in the series) Dayakkaiser is based off of Bombshell's head design, complete with a cannon mounted on top of it's face.
When Trailbreaker and Silverbolt cut the security systems that keep Unicron's prisoners in their cells, King Atlas is part of the swarm of Cybertrons who make their escape.

(Note: 3H writers noted that King Atlas was going to become a much more prominent character in the Universe comics, leading an "underground railroad" that would free the untold numbers of Cybertrons who had been kidnapped by Unicron. This, of course, never came to be due to the bankruptcy of 3H.)

Fun Publications Cybertron comics
King Atlas is shown in a flashback to the end of the Universe battles, as told by Robots in Disguise Optimus Prime. *King Atlas (Ultra, 2004)

: A redeco of the Decepticon Predator Skyquake, King Atlas transforms into a large bomber jet, its model pretty much made-up but based (loosely) on an SR-71. Like the other US release of this mold, Machine Wars Starscream, it lacks the original spring-loaded missile launcher hand-weapon due to there being no way in hell it would pass US safety testing. It does retain the "carpet bombing" gimmick in its wings, plus the light-pipe and "periscope" gimmicks.

: His coloration is similar to that of Dai Atlas, though whether he is an homage or the actual character has yet to be revealed. Along with the extensive paint washing of his jet-mode parts, he actually ends up looking a fair bit like a Star Wars vehicle.
Lacks self-esteem and often asks to be left behind. Projects nearly impenetrable invisible force-field. Can jam radio transmissions. Very slow. Often mopes about his handicaps, but his bravery and defensive prowess is unquestioned.

Dreamwave Comics
When civil war broke out between the Autobots and Decepticon factions, Trailbreaker joined the Autobot cause.

Trailbreaker was present under the command of Grimlock at the battle of Altihex where the Autobot Overhaul was killed and Decepticon Seekers Thundercracker and Skywarp destroyed a a transport full of neutral Cybertonians. Unable to save the city, the Autobot helped evacuate civilians (Transformers: The War Within #1).

When Decepticon Military Operations Commander Shockwave lead a force of Decepticons against the Autobot capitol of Iacon, Trailbreaker was among the Autobots who defended the capitol (Transformers: War Within #5-6).

When Decepticon leader Megatron and Autobot leader Optimus Prime disappeared in an accident with a space bridge, the Autobot and Decepticon forces splintered into smaller factions. Trailbreaker stayed with the Autobots under the leadership of Prowl.

When Prowl and his team of Autobots confronted Trypticon, Hound, Tracks, Trailbreaker and other Autobots showed up as reinforcements (Transformers: The War Within - The Dark Ages #4).

Trailbreaker was among the Autobots who followed Optimus Prime on his mission on board the Ark. They were attacked by Megatron's ship, the Nemesis. After being boarded the Ark crash landed on Earth, where all on board were preserved in emergency stasis.

In 1984 a volcanic eruption awakened the Ark's computer, Teletran-I, and it repaired all on board. It reformatted Trailbreaker in the form of an Earth truck (specifically, a Toyota Hi-Lux camper pickup).

Eventually the combined forces of the Autobots on Earth, and their human allies were able to capture the Decepticons. A ship called the Ark II was built to take the Cybertonians back to Cybertron, along with some human companions, but the ship exploded shortly after takeoff. The human allies were killed, but the Cybertonians were lost in the ocean, again in stasis lock.

After Spike Witwicky used a piece of the Matrix to revive Optimus Prime, Optimus traveled to the remote shoreline where he was recovered and used the Matrix to revive Jazz, Mirage, Sideswipe, Sunstreaker, Superion, Trailbreaker and Wheeljack (Transformers: Generation One #2).

Trailbreaker returned to Cybertron with Optimus Prime and most of the Autobots to face charges after Ultra Magnus informs them the war on Cybertron had ended.

Transformers: Universe
Generation One Trailbreaker was among the Autobots who appeared in the Transformers: Universe comics, although he was not (technically) produced as a toy in that line.

The toy called Ironhide in Transformers: Universe was painted in the colors of Generation Ones Trailbreaker as an homage. It is suspected that this toy (along with a version of Transformers: Robots in Disguise's Prowl 2 repainted in G1 Red Alert's colors) were intended to be a part of an earlier line of 8 Spychangers produced as homages to classic Generation One Autobots. Because those 8 carry the name of their homages, this toy would have been called Trailbreaker.

Transformers: Cybertron
According to Habro they first considered the name Trailbreaker for the toy they eventually called Overhaul (Jackshot in Japan), which is why when Overhaul was reformatted into a lion/liger he was renamed Leobreaker.
