A disgruntled Sumdac employee seeks revenge and profit by taking control of one of the Autobots and sending him on a rampage.

Synopsis
On a secluded Sumdac Systems testing ground, Isaac Sumdac is interviewing an eager new employee: Henry Masterson, a web-jargon-spewing young hotshot engineer/inventor who has risen quickly through the company ranks on the recommendation of his superiors. Eager to impress his new boss and long-time idol, Masterson unveils his magnum opus: the Headmaster unit, a head-shaped piloted command unit/battle station that replaces the heads of other automatons in order to take control of their bodies. Sumdac is horrified, however, when he realises the militaristic intentions of the immature Masterson and his creation. When the warbot Masterson is using as a test subject buckles under the weight of the Headmaster unit and launches a missile towards Detroit, the Professor is understandably furious and immediately fires the belligerent geek.

Meanwhile, in the city centre, Bulkhead is in the middle of a different kind of interview: a televised streetside one-to-one with a sensationalist reporter-bot. Bulkhead hopes it will clear up misunderstandings about his large and intimidating appearance, but it's going rather less well than he might have hoped. Having accidentally ripped off said reporter-bot's arm midway through his interview, Bulkhead is fortunately able to excuse himself from his press commitments when Prime radios in to tell him to intercept the missile heading for downtown. Speeding into action, he reaches the missile ahead of the other Autobots and destroys it before it can impact. His success is offset, however, by the destruction he himself causes in the process, including the totaling of the unfortunate reporter-bot, to the distress of innocent onlookers.

Back at Autobot headquarters, Sari and Bumblebee attempt to console a downcast Bulkhead, with varying degrees of success and sincerity. Sensing that the gentle giant might benefit from a creative outlet for his sensitive, emotional side, Sari decides to introduce Bulkhead to the concept of art. After some false starts and a violation of Detroit's graffiti laws, and despite the slight bemusement of his Autobot colleagues, Bulkhead gradually gains a tentative grasp of basic painting and sculpture skills. He remains acutely self-conscious of his own heavy-handedness, however, and continues to express embarrassment both about himself and his artwork. As such, Sari's sudden declaration that she has arranged an exhibition of Bulkhead's creations in a real art gallery goes down poorly; the sensitive artiste has a panic attack and bolts.

Masterson, meanwhile, has returned to his lab to brood over his rejection, using Headmaster units to convert warbots into ersatz Rock 'Em, Sock 'Em Robots to ease his frustration. Deciding that he will instead create his own company to manufacture Headmasters, he formulates a plan to acquire the two things that will make his "wicked-sick" dream a reality: large amounts of cash and a body big enough to support a Headmaster. As he does so, he focuses in on an image of Bulkhead on the TV and hits upon his solution. Indeed, moments later, Bulkhead is trudging alone down the darkened streets of Detroit, lamenting over his artistic difficulties, when he is suddenly incapacitated with a shock to the chestplate. He retains consciousness just long enough to see the Headmaster unit fire its metal-cutting laser and to hear a soon-to-be familiar proclamation of "TOTAL OWNAGE!!" When he awakens, he discovers, to his considerable distress, that he is nothing more than a disembodied head, with his body nowhere to be found.

Having brought Bulkhead's head safely back to headquarters, Prime, Ratchet and Prowl depart to assist the police investigation, leaving the bodiless Bulkhead, much to his annoyance, in the care of the not-wholly-sympathetic Bumblebee. After taking the opportunity to belittle Bulkhead for his newly diminished stature and use him as a bowling ball, Bumblebee agrees to help Bulkhead create more art pieces for his gallery show. However, 'Bee manages to set the resulting sculpture on fire, then tries to incorporate Bulkhead's head into the art itself, which convinces Bulkhead that acquiring a body of his own should be his top priority.

Meanwhile, the police investigation, at Professor Sumdac's request, follows the trail of the body to Masterson's lab, where they find residual traces of Bulkhead's Cybertronian energy, but no signs of the body's current whereabouts. All of these factors become moot, however, when Bulkhead, who has in the meantime commandeered the luckless Tutor Bot's body to complete his painting project, begins to sense and react remotely to his stolen body's actions. Checking the news broadcast, Bumblebee and Bulkhead see that the body, now under full Headmaster control, has stormed the Detroit Solar Fusion Power Plant. Furthermore, Masterson, now referring to himself as "The Headmaster", appears on air, demanding a ransom of 700 billion dollars to be delivered personally by Professor Sumdac, or else he will overload the plant, thus destroying the entire state of Michigan.

Faced with this diabolical threat, Prime concocts a plan to outwit the Headmaster. Sumdac, Sari and Captain Fanzone are sent into the plant in a convoy of vehicles, actually Prowl, Ratchet, Bumblebee and Prime, with Optimus himself carrying the "ransom" in a familiar-looking trailer. Once inside, they are confronted by the Bulkhead-mounted Headmaster, who falls for the ruse thoroughly enough to reveal his true intention: he's going renege on the deal and destroy the city—and Sumdac Systems—even with the ransom paid, thereby eliminating his competition and creating a crisis that will fuel demand for his Headmaster units, whose construction the ransom money will finance. He initiates the plant's overload sequence, and, at Sumdac's suggestion, opens the trailer to count his money, only to find instead the enraged head of Bulkhead, who leaps out, demanding his body back. This is the Autobots' cue to transform and attack the Headmaster, who retaliates using the unit's sizable onboard arsenal, not to mention the strength of its host body. After some violent exchanges, the Autobots are able to overpower the Headmaster, but not without their conflict inadvertently destroying the control terminal for the fusion core.

With overload imminent, Masterson decides to abandon the stolen body, activating the Headmaster unit's thrusters to make an aerial escape, but Bulkhead is able to bring him down to earth by using Prime's grapplers to turn his own head into a makeshift wrecking-ball projectile. With Headmaster apparently subdued, Bumblebee and Sari uses the Key finally to reunite Bulkhead's head with his body. Unfortunately, they attach it backwards. Taking advantage of the distraction, Masterson transforms his Headmaster unit into a small robot, in which he flees the scene. Pursuit of the Headmaster is impossible, however, due to the imminent overload of the fusion core. Sumdac realises that the only remaining method of preventing meltdown is to enter the core and physically reset the solar dampeners, an unsurvivable task for human or Autobot. Prime volunteers himself, but Bulkhead, drawing on his newly developed creative instincts, instead rallies the Autobots to assemble hastily a crude robot, which Sari is able to activate with her key. Entering the core, the robot is able to withstand the blistering heat just long enough to reset the dampening rods and stabilise the core with just seconds to spare.

Some time later, the melted remnants of the makeshift robot are relocated to the museum, where they become the centrepiece of Bulkhead's well-attended art exhibition. Looking on Bulkhead's print of the Autobots together, Optimus comments that he finally understands that art is about feeling, due to the emotion he feels looking at it: pride.

Transformers references
* The Headmaster concept was originally part of the Generation 1 series and has seen sporadic use in other series since.

* Optimus tows a trailer with a certain paint job. Somewhere, a kitbasher is already working on a version he can sell you.

* When Captain Fanzone switches Bumblebee's radio to something he likes, Bumblebee switches back to the previous radio channel. Fortunately, this reference is taken no further, so at no point does he make out with anyone on Bumblebee's hood.

* The song that Bumblebee likes is the same song that Soundwave dances to in "Sound and Fury".

* Daniel appears again, crying his eyes out because of Bulkhead accidentally breaking a reporter-bot. Although the woman who comforts him is listed in the end credits as "Mother," she does not use the same character model as the woman resembling Carly Witwicky who appeared in "Transform and Roll Out!".

*When the Headmaster unit detaches from Bulkhead, it transforms similarly to the Headmaster exosuits, with the face of the head ending up as a sort of backpack.

*When the fusion core is about to explode, Optimus volunteers to go in and stabilize it himself at the cost of his own life. He sure likes to do this.

Real-world references
*Among the works of art that Tutor Bot shows Bulkhead to inspire him are Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, Vincent Van Gogh's The Starry Night, and James McNeill Whistler's Arrangement in Grey and Black: The Artist's Mother.

* Masterson plays "Rock 'Em, Sock 'Em Robots" with his Headmaster drones.

* When Bulkhead creates an image of the Autobots, he does so with the sound of a dot matrix printer.

* In the scene with Bulkhead painting his hand, Bumblebee's pose (one leg behind his head, carrying a baby, in front of an overturned Jeep) is a direct reference to the 1980 film Airplane!, in which the main character is in a mental hospital and is painting a very similar image with a live model. (Bumblebee is missing the tommy gun and explosion backdrop, but he does have one of his stingers deployed, close enough for the first one.)

Miscellaneous trivia
* Unlike Isaac Sumdac himself, Masterson is capable of building a fully transformable, mobile robot. This, along with his lack of regard for human life, just goes to show that Megatron is working with the wrong guy.

* This episode is notable in that Sari does not abuse her key, only using it to reattach Bulkhead's head and make a working robot to save the city.

*The cop that gets out of the car when Fanzone Sumdac and the Autobots arrive to pay Masterson the ransom is |Mustache man|

* Sari's key has, on an number of occasions, been shown to have the power to give sentient life to previously Spark-less automatons, notably the Dinobots and Soundwave. In this episode, Sari used the key on the sculpture robot they sent in to sacrifice itself, which makes some fans think it may have been truly alive. On the other hand, Sari has used the key on countless other unsophisticated machines (and a few semi-sophisticated ones like Tutor-Bot) that apparently did not gain sentience. Also, the two times keyed robots have gained Sparks, they were reverse-engineered Cybertronian technology designed by Megatron; the former with an unusual burst of makeshift EMP mixed into the Key energy, the latter specifically designed to evolve through multiple uses of the key. These facts suggest that the sculpture robot was not a sentient being. It's debatable--maybe we'll get an official explanation at a Botcon panel some time.
Astrotrain and Blitzwing depose Megatron and Starscream, then proceed to wreak havoc.
*Japanese title: "Revolt of the Triple Changers"

Detailed synopsis
Starscream, Blitzwing and Astrotrain begin using their weapons to carve their faces along with Megatron's into a mountainside. They agree one of the faces doesn't belong, then decide to band together and overthrow Megatron. Flying back to base, Blitzwing and Astrotrain decide who should lead Megatron into the trap, one of them suggesting Starscream while the other counters how the Air Commander has constantly been attempting to become leader of the Decepticons and failed. Starscream retorts as usual and says he will do it, and the other two gloat about manipulating him.

Starscream leads Megatron into the sewers, stating that a secret Autobot energy base is present there, but the doors close around them. Megatron recognizes it's a trap but gets frozen. Starscream gloats and tries to escape through a hatch but finds out that it's been locked by his "allies". This leaves Astrotrain and Blitzwing as the only joint Decepticon leaders.

Heading for a stadium, Blitzwing, in a display of great intelligence, drafts a football coach to be his second-in-command and give tactical advice. Blitzwing misinterprets his suggestions of "zone defense" and "long bomb" and has the Constructicons build a massive highway maze, then begins firing from inside the stadium. Prowl leads a group of Autobots to investigate, but they end up crashing into each other in the Constructicons' maze. Meanwhile, Astrotrain heads to a train station, where he "conscripts" the Astroforce, human trains which are to be his army. He sends them into a tunnel to collect energy lines and convert them into energon. It actually goes quite well for Astrotrain. The Astroforce? Not so much.

Meanwhile, Powerglide flies over the maze, where Scrapper has built himself a throne...made of Prowl, Tracks, Skids, and Bluestreak. Guided by Powerglide from the air, Hoist and Smokescreen manage to rescue the Autobots, causing Blitzwing and Scrapper to crash into each other. At the train station, the Seekers come to see how Astrotrain is doing. To his credit, he has gotten a lot of Energon cubes, but his Astroforce has somehow gotten off their tracks and into a knot. Astrotrain urges one of the trains to gather some energy from a gas main, but it turns out to be a water main, which floods the tunnel. Worse, it heads into the tunnel in which Megatron and Starscream are trapped. Online again, Megatron accuses Starscream of another attempt at treason. Starscream maintains that he was tricked. Optimus Prime, Ironhide, and Spike Witwicky see the two Decepticons, only to be distracted by the water main flooding the city. Trailbreaker uses his force field to push back the water, while Optimus and Ironhide seal the main. Heading for the station, Megatron and Starscream encounter Prime, who claims that he's looking for the leaders of the Decepticons...which are not Megatron and Starscream. This royally pisses off Megatron, who tries to kill the Autobot leader, but Prime escapes. Megatron leaves to put Astrotrain and Blitzwing in their place, with the Seekers following, betting on who will win. Optimus, however, is content to sit back and watch what happens.

At the stadium, the Constructicons demand a share of the power Blitzwing promised, but he refuses and tells them to go jump off a bridge. Bad idea, for the Constructicons form Devastator. The flood from the water main finally dies out at the stadium, depositing Astrotrain, who decides to scrap Blitzwing as well. Megatron and Starscream arrive, and Megs beats his would-be usurpers senseless, but Devastator knocks out Megatron, then turns his sights on the Air Commander. Starscream manages to dodge Devastator, then Megatron slams the giant. Megatron, Blitzwing, Astrotrain, Starscream, and Devastator then engage in a battle royale which sees Megatron emerge victorious. He decides to spare the traitors, saying the Decepticon cause is too important, but warns them never to betray him again.

As the Autobots look on, they're impressed that Prime knew that Megatron would handle the Decepticons for them. The previously injured Autobots form a throne for their commander to sit on, but Optimus Prime declares that he'd rather roll.
"Scrapper, how big is our zone defense?" <br>
"Can't tell, all the others are lost in it. All I know is that it's big!"

"You are either lying or you're stupid!" <br>
"I'm stupid! I'm stupid!"
:—Megatron and Starscream as the latter attempts to blame the Triple Changers for the takeover.

"Don't waste your time, Megatron. Incinerating you is of no interest to me. I am looking for the leaders of the Decepticons." <br>
"I am the Decepticon leader!" <br>
"You and Starscream are just a nuisance. A couple of metallic mosquitoes." <br>
"Mosquitoes?! Then feel my BITE!"
:—Optimus Prime really ticking off Megatron.

"Tell you what, guys, why don't you go build a bridge...and jump off it!"<br>
"Constructicons... transform into Devastator!"<br>

"Get this straight: I am Decepticon Leader, YOU are recyclable!"<br>
"Well put, Megatron!"
:—Megatron disses Blitzwing and Astrotrain while Starscream kisses up.

"Megatron is a wimp!" <br>
"So is Starscream!" <br>
"Yes, but I'm fast!"

"I guess Prime was right. Megatron took care of the Decepticons for us."<br>
"Yeah, but there is only one great leader in the universe. Have a seat, boss."<br>
"Thrones are for Decepticons. Besides, I'd rather roll."
With the Dinobots having deserted the dying Autobots, Spike and Carly must find them and save the Autobots.

Synopsis
Arriving through the Space Bridge, Spike and Carly come under fire from Shockwave, but he only succeeds in disintegrating Carly's car. The two humans manage to take refuge inside a small hole in a computer. Carly attempts to work the machine, but is hit by a surge of electricity and falls into a nearby pit, damaging the computer, but also twisting her ankle in the process. Megatron contacts Shockwave and orders him to send Cybertonium before the Decepticons die, but Carly's tinkering has left the Space Bridge is non-functional.

After escaping the computer, Spike and Carly are guided to Wheeljack's old lab by Sparkplug, using Teletraan I. They meet up with Swoop, who explains that the Dinobots were captured by the Decepticons and taken to the Cybertonium Pit. The three are guided by Sparkplug to a mass transit system. Unfortunately, the tube carrying their car is damaged, and they can no longer communicate with Sparkplug. Deep underground, the three are nearly killed when they activate old defense systems. Swoop saves the day, but his wings are damaged. Reaching the surface, they discover a datatrack which explains the history of the terrible war between the Autobots and Decepticons, but are soon captured by a Sentinel.

Taken to the Cybertonium Pit, they discover that Shockwave altered the Dinobots' memory circuits, making them think they're loyal to the Decepticons. Carly is able to repair their memory circuits, and Spike comes up with an escape plan. He and Grimlock start arguing, so the Sentinel decides to remove the humans. When the force field surrounding them comes down, the Dinobots destroy the drones. Heading to the repaired Space Bridge, the Dinobots and humans manage to escape back to Earth with a shipment of Cybertonium.

At the Autobot base, Optimus Prime awards Spike and Carly with medals, making them "honorary Autobots". Grimlock decides to follow Optimus Prime's orders, and the Dinobots rejoin the Autobots.

"Millions of years ago, Cybertron was a planet at peace...until the Decepticons, lusting for power, began a terrible war. Not designed for combat, the Autobots were overwhelmed and subjugated by their evil opponents. While many Autobots fled Cybertron, a few valiant survivors devised new tactics and launched a counter-offensive on their arch-foes. And thus began a terrible series of wars. Many times, both sides have claimed victory, but this has been short-lived, for the Autobots have overthrown Decepticon tyrants, and, likewise, Decepticon treachery has toppled a many a peaceful Autobot ruler. And to this day, the war rages on." <br>

:Broadside is an Autobot from the Generation 1 continuity family.

Broadside is a huge loser. He's the forgotten Autobot Triple Changer who turns into either a tiny aircraft carrier and a jet, or an impossibly large "jet" and an aircraft carrier. Broadside also happens to be terrified of heights. And gets seasick on the water.

His life must suuuuuuck.

Fortunately, as one of the Wreckers, Broadside is almost constantly shooting the slag out of Decepticons, which is probably a good outlet for any frustration.

:Italian name: Mistral<br>

Fiction
Marvel Comics continuity
Events from the UK-only comics are in italics.

Broadside was present to watch Blaster and Grimlock duke it out on the moon. Totaled!

Broadside appeared as part of the Wreckers commanded by Springer on Cybertron, while they were been attacked at their Kalis base by the Legion of the Lost. Legion of the Lost! Following the Time Wars, Broadside become one of the Survivors.

Cartoon continuity
:Voice actor: Bill Martin (US), Masashi Ebara (Japan)

Dreamwave comics continuity
During the first arc of Optimus Prime's tenure as leader of the Autobots, Broadside was an enormous warrior, as tall as the special combiner teams, and supposedly nearly as powerful. He helped defend the Autobot capital of Iacon. The War Within

A few thousand years after that, Broadside, now the size of a standard Transformer, is a member of the Wreckers fighting in the Tagan Heights. Most notably he organized the evacuation of his team when Devastator and Defensor were decimating the area. Possibly, Broadside had himself reduced after the signing of the Crisis Intervention Accords to keep his combat status nominal. The War Within: The Dark Ages

IDW Comics continuity
Broadside was there. He saw it happen. The conquest of Kaon. The fall of a Prime. The beginning of the Great War. Broadside was there, and amazingly well armed for such a 'peaceful' period, though perhaps he took a clue from Sentinel Prime. Either way, the huge old bot was one of the survivors who managed to evacuate before Megatron's takeover. Megatron Origin

Presently, Broadside is a member of the elite combat unit "The Wreckers." Broadside appears to be the team's strongarm, and is second only to Roadbuster for total armament. He is also quite large (easily the tallest Wrecker), solving some of the issues of his mass-shifting. Typically in the air he worked alongside Whirl and Sandstorm, while on the ground he worked with Roadbuster and Scoop. He appears not to have the animated continuity version's phobias. But then, there isn't really time to complain when an omnicidal Pretender is trying to kill you. Stormbringer (comics)
Toys
Generation 1
*Broadside (1986)
: Japanese ID number: C-85

: Broadside is the most blatantly out-of-scale Transformers ever. He transforms into an aircraft carrier, and a rather unconvincing apparently-aircraft carrier-sized jet fighter. He carries a rifle and a (comparably) small axe as weapons in robot mode.

Trivia
* Broadside has the distinction of having two animated character models, one based on a prototype toy that apparently went just short of production for some reason, and one based on the actual toy. The prototype design - which was used for the 1986 box mural, Carnage in C-Minor and his Marvel Comics appearances, albeit with a different coloration - features a head with antennae and a red humanoid face which appears to mounted on a horizontal pivot of some kind within the section of the aircraft carrier that folds back.

*According to Carnage in C-Minor, Broadside has quite a temper when it comes to his paint job.

*His italian name, Mistral, refers to a French Navy helicopter carrier and the Maserati Mistral, a Grand Prix car, not Chilean woman poet, Gabriela Mistral.
The Decepticons get a hold of the Nightbird, a deadly ninja-bot.

Japanese title: "Shadow of the Nightbird"

Detailed synopsis
The Autobots attend the unveiling of Nightbird, a human-built “female ninja robot,” by invitation from the robot’s creator, Dr. Fujiyama. Predictably, the Decepticons attack and immediately have the upper hand because the Autobots won’t fight in a hall crowded with humans. Starscream and the other Seekers steal the robot, and the other Decepticons take off.

Apologetic for their abject failure to protect the robot, Optimus promises to return it back to Dr. Fujiyama quickly and unharmed.

Meanwhile, Megatron has Bombshell reprogram Nightbird and triple her power. When activated, she immediately smacks Starscream. She might be quiet, but she’s perceptive. Megatron, joyous at the result of Bombshell’s tinkering, sends Nightbird on a mission to infiltrate Autobot headquarters and steal the World Energy Chip from Teletraan 1.

Using her ninja skills, Nightbird accomplishes the mission, but she is detected by the Autobots. She bashes Mirage and manages to escape the base. The Autobots pursue to capture Nightbird, but are hampered by the promise they made not to damage her. Because, you know, it’s not gentlemanly to hit a girl. Prime tries to reason with her, but she drops him like a bad habit and keeps avoiding capture.

Megatron watches all of this remotely and says he’s considering her as Starscream’s replacement. Starscream doesn’t find it funny and attacks Megatron, but he is quickly caged. Megatron turns back to his spying and sees that Nightbird has finally been caught by the Autobots in an energy web.

Megatron orders everyone on a mission to rescue her and the World Energy Chip. They arrive and battle. Meanwhile, Starscream escapes his cage, arrives on the scene and uses his null-ray to put Nightbird out of commission. His hatred for traitors outweighing his common sense, Megatron orders the Decepticons after Starscream and leaves the ninja robot and the chip in Prime’s hands.

The Autobots make good on their promise by returning Nightbird unharmed to Fujiyama, who decides to put her storage. Despite being neutralized, Nightbird casts a final, angered glare out at the cold, cold, world.
Other notes
Animation and/or technical glitches
* When Nightbird's lightsaber is shot and deactivated, you can still hear the sound effects for about 2 more seconds before they stop.

Continuity errors
* At the end of Act Two, Nightbird gets the drop on Prime and raises her sword as if to slice him in half. At the opening of Act Three, however, she's just standing there in front of him, idly spinning the sword around.

Transformers references
* In 3H's Universe comics, Nightbird returned as a savage horde, which forced Daniel Witwicky to kill himself and Wheelie to destroy them...which goes to show that they are good for something.
Reports of giant insects terrorizing a South American village leads the Decepticons to discover their long-lost comrades, the Insecticons, who have adapted to life away from Cybertronian technology by learning how to convert any material they eat into Energon.

Notes
Technical/Animation Glitches
* When the Ark is first seen, it's colored silver instead of orange.
* When the Autobots and Spike board Skyfire, Bumblebee and Spike remain visible for a split second as the door closes behind them, not in front of them as one would expect. They inexplicably disappear in the very next shot, when Skyfire takes off.
* When the Decepticons and Insecticons flee from the field, Thundercracker in jet mode is colored in Skyfire's white-and-red palette.
*Just before Brawn asks Optimus to throw him, he is in vehicle mode, then he transforms from robot to vehicle mode, and is then standing in robot mode.

Continuity Errors
*If the Insecticons had landed four million years before the crash of the Ark, and have presumably been active throughout all previous episodes, how come neither the Autobots nor the Decepticons had never learned of their existence until this episode, and when they did learn, they did it simultaneously? It's entirely possible to retcon this by claiming that the Insecticons were protoforms who had not come online, and were activated by the pod as a method of preserving them. However, the protoform concept hadn't been introduced yet, so...
*How does Skyfire manage to hide in the bushes with the other, short Autobots? He's about four Bumblebees tall!
*Why do the Decepticons and the Insecticons not know each other if they were all on board the Nemesis? Even if you assume that there were lots of Decepticons on board and Megatron didn’t know them all personally (which in itself is doubtful) the Insecticons must surely know who Megatron is!
