The Protectobot Groove, for instance, acts as a power pack when his group forms Defensor. Changing Gears

Megatron orchestrates a conflict with the Autobots in order to capture Gears and remove a vital sensor component from his system. Megatron's plan is to use the sensor in a solar collector which his Decepticons are constructing, a device which harnesses energy from the heart of the sun. In addition, the removal of this component from Gears corrupts his personality circuitry, allowing Megatron to manipulate and control him. Unbeknownst to Megatron, the solar collection device is flawed, causing a dangerous instability within the core of the sun. The Autobots arrive in order to rescue Gears and prevent Megatron from using the device. Autobot Spike

Sparkplug constructs a new robot which is given the moniker Autobot X. However, during testing the robot is proven to be unstable, Sparkplug cannot control it and it is shutdown and put into storage. Soon after Spike is injured in a conflict with the Decepticons. In order to save him his mind must be transferred to Autobot X so that doctors may operate on his fragile body. Autobot X's unstable mind fuses with Spike's, who is in turn influenced by Megatron to betray the Autobots. Only the near death of Sparkplug prevents Spike from continuing his rampage, shaking him from his madness.
