:Bombshell is a Decepticon Insecticon in the Generation 1 continuity family.
A master of mind-controlling "cerebro-shells," the twisted Bombshell plays with the minds of others as a child would a new toy, enthusiastically and recklessly. But there is nothing childlike about the gleeful malice he exposes in forcing his victims into more and more humiliating and destructive acts. Bombshell takes such sadistic joy in the destruction of his victims that even the other Decepticons can be put off, wondering if he wouldn't be just as pleased to play those same "games" with them...

Bombshell and the rest of the Insecticons jettisoned themselves out the Decepticon cruiser when it and the Autobot ship crashed on Prehistoric Earth. Landing in what would become modern Bali off of Indonesia, the Insecticons were altered by their idento-computers to possess insectoid beast modes, and had the ability to convert organic matter into energon. The Insecticons were largely communal in nature, though Bombshell often alternated leadership with Shrapnel (Kickback was out of luck).

Reactivating around the same time as those aboard the Ark, the Insecticons formed a small nest for themselves in Demon Swamp before being tracked down by Megatron and the Decepticons. They formed an alliance for the purpose of collecting energon and vanquishing the Autobots. In their first encounter with the enemy, Bombshell demonstrated one of the most unique of the trio's abilities -- after firing an "insecti-shell" at a farming machine to blow it into pieces, he and the other Insecticons used "clone beams" to somehow convert those fragments of metal into duplicates of the Insecticons in their insect modes, a virtual swarm of Insecticlones created nearly out of thin air.

The initial alliance between Decepticons and Insecticons broke down after the greedy insects attempted to gorge themselves on the cache of energon cubes Megatron had created, and then abandoned the Decepticons to the Autobots. After that, the two groups operated independently, only joining forces as a matter on convenience on rare occasions. A Plague of Insecticons

Bombshell and the Insecticons next hired out their services to Megatron during his experimentation with the electro-cells as on-call guards, in exchange for a share of the profits. The Autobot Mirage attempted to turn them against each other, however, by stealing the Insecticons' reward and framing the Decepticons for it. Bombshell and the others staged an assault on the electro cell station and their Decepticon "comrades". During a spray of one of Shrapnel's grenades, Mirage was inadvertently caught in the blast while invisible. Bombshell seized upon the opportunity to implant one of his cerebro-shells in the fallen Autobot and turn him into a slave. What he DIDN'T do, however, is question what an Autobot counter-intelligence agent was doing sneaking around Decepticon camp just then. Megatron had to force Bombshell to think at gunpoint before he realized that Megatron wouldn't rob them while Optimus Prime and the Autobots still lived. Maybe after, but not before. The united 'Cons then attempted to set a trap for the Autobots using Mirage, but ultimately Mirage was set free and the electro-cells were destroyed. Traitor

Next, Bombshell's aid was commissioned to upgrade the human-built female ninja robot known as Nightbird for Megatron, converting her into a functional assassin. His engineering skills shown here were rather remarkable for someone with no table manners. Enter the Nightbird

On their next joint venture, Megatron arranged for Bombshell and the Insecticons to have access to the Nova Power Core, a meal that filled them with raw energy and caused them to increase in size dramatically. In exchange, they aided the Decepticons in raiding the armored installation known as Iron Mountain to gain control of the defense computer being housed there. Their new power went to their heads, however, and the Insecticons were overheard plotting against Megatron by his spy Soundwave. Soundwave didn't get far, however, before Bombshell captured the Decepticon and turned him with the help of a cerebro-shell.

He then systematically "bugged" the rest of Megatron's troops; by the time Iron Mountain was successfully infiltrated, Megatron was the only Decepticon left. The nova power proved to be too unstable for the Insecticons to synthesize, however, and an antidote was administered to rob Bombshell and Kickback of their additional mass and power. Shrapnel, however, exploded into pieces before the antidote could be properly administered. Somehow, though, Bombshell was able to completely reconstruct his fallen comrade in a matter of seconds, using a special insecti-shell to reunify the pieces. The Insecticon Syndrome

In another scheme, Megatron convinced the Insecticons that he had a new energon processing system that could draw power from their organic-conversion process far more efficiently than their bodies normally could. The Insecticons would gather vast amounts of power through their clone armies, and then return to Decepticon headquarters to refine their amassed energies into energon cubes. Little did they know that the refinement process was far more effective than Megatron presented -- Bombshell and the others were given scraps while dozens of cubes were being produced by their efforts. They slowly began to wise up to Megatron's duplicity and, when his henchman Thrust attempted to warn them away from a certain valley, the Insecticons took it as a sign there was something valuable there. In fact there was: a can of robotic insecticide the Autobots had planned to use against the Insecticlones, and an ever-growing number of Morphobots, techno-organic plants that fed on robot insects. Bombshell and the Insecticons attempted to feed on the plants, only to have their food "bite back" and their entire clone army destroyed in a matter of minutes.Quest for Survival

Bombshell would ultimately be mortally wounded during the battle of Autobot City and was ejected alongside many other fallen Decepticon warriors (Megatron included), into deep space, where Unicron reformatted him into Cyclonus or the other guy. The Transformers: The Movie (1986)

Marvel Comics continuity
noteukonly

Bombshell was first seen as a soldier on Cybertron, operating out of Darkmount under the command of Lord Straxus. The Smelting Pool! After Straxus began an alliance with Megatron and the Decepticons of Earth, Bombshell was transported to our solar system by way of the Space Bridge. He, Kickback, and Shrapnel were then reformatted into the Insecticons, and granted impressive mass shifting powers that enabled them to shrink down to the size of actual insects when transforming.

The Insecticons' first mission on Earth was to set up a conduit between Cybertron and Hoover Dam, stealing the hydro-electrical power. Bombshell tracked down the assistant chief engineer, Ricky Vasquez, and implanted him with a cerebro-shell so that the Decepticons could infiltrate the plant clandestinely. With Megatron and the Insecticons riding shotgun, Vasquez snuck them into the control room where Shrapnel was able to take electronic control of the dam. Vasquez eventually managed to reassert his free will however and, with the interference of the Aerialbots, the Decepticon operation proved ineffective. Aerialbots over America!

Still, Bombshell took advantage of the opportunity to infiltrate the Ark by riding atop Silverbolt back to the Autobot base. While inside, he seized a chance to fire one of his cerebro-shell inside Optimus Prime during a medical exam where Ratchet was cleaning a recent wound. He was unable to actually control Prime, but managed something almost as good -- by piping in a radio connection to Megatron through Soundwave, Bombshell's implant was able to divert some of the Creation Matrix to the Decepticons, bringing life to the Stunticons just as Prime was finalizing the life-sparks of the Aerialbots. Bombshell's implant was eventually discovered, but the damage was done. Heavy Traffic!

Later, Megatron commissioned Bombshell and Dirge to take control of the human creation known as Power Station Alpha. Sighting Bumblebee casing the installation, Bombshell blasted a human boy with a cerebro-shell as a distraction, sending him off into danger while the Decepticon infiltrated Alpha and placed a specially-modified shell inside. Blood on the Tracks Things were too hot to retrieve it then, with the G.I. Joe team taking hostile action against Bumblebee and then being confronted themselves by Superion, but later that night the remote control was triggered and Power Station Alpha sprung to life. Surprisingly for the Decepticons, though, it did NOT come to their base as programmed -- Doctor Mindbender of COBRA was able to lock onto the electronic frequency of Bombshell's shell and bring Alpha to Cobra Island instead. Dirge and Bombshell were therefore forced into the position of emissaries for the Decepticon cause, proposing an alliance between them and Cobra in order to share Power Station Alpha's potential. Power Struggle

While Mindbender was acting as Cobra's "ambassador", he uncovered the severity of their plans for Alpha, and the devastating effect it would have on the Earth. Once Cobra switched sides and joined in an alliance with the Joes and the Autobots, Mindbender was deemed "surplus parts" and Bombshell attempted to execute him. Instead, the Insecticon was disabled by a blast from one of the Baroness's cannon weapons. As the two Cobra agents left to join Serpentor in conference with their new "friends", Mindbender scooped up the unconscious Bombshell (who had reverted to his tiny insect mode) in the hopes of dissecting his circuitry later. Only after arriving at the Joe base did they discover the connection between Bombshell and his cerebro-shells, as the Joe technical expert Mainframe prodded the shell which had been surgically retrieved from the boy Bombshell blasted days earlier, causing the still-inactive Insecticon to spontaneously transform out of his own control. ...All Fall Down!

How Bombshell eventually regained control of his systems and returned to the Decepticons is unknown, but he did and was later seen briefly under Ratbat's command. Totaled!

Dreamwave comics continuity
Bombshell, sporting a spiffy tank mode, was first seen on Cybertron millions of years ago as part of a commando group being directed by Soundwave in a raid on Iacon. They ran into Optimus Prime on his first day on the job. It still hurt. A lot. The War Within During the Dark Ages, Bombshell and his fellow future Insecticons served under Shockwave as part of the primary Decepticon faction. The War Within: The Dark Ages

Prior to the Great Shutdown, Shockwave uncovered the crash location of the missing ships the Ark and Nemesis: Earth. He sent Kickback, Shrapnel and Bombshell to the planet as part of some vast, incomprehensible scheme he'd been perfecting for millennia. They initially encountered resistance from the Dinobots, but gave them the slip and went undercover on Earth for millions of years. The Rules of Extinction In modern times, however, Bombshell seemed to have developed a few loose screws and begun operated outside his mission parameters. Having taken over a small town in rural America, Bombshell had begun mass production of techno-organic Insecticlones being grown from special pods. His actions drew the attention of Earth Defense Command and Jazz's Autobot faction, leading to an investigation of the town. The Autobots managed to uncover the Insecticons' schemes, free the townspeople, and capture their opponents. It was easy. Perhaps, too easy...? Extermination

His sociopathic tendencies, combined with his incredible vanity and arrogance, usually result in tension between himself and the other Autobots. He is generally unwilling to help those who are having trouble keeping up, and is quite audible when it comes to complaining about the shortcomings of everyone else. The only Autobot he truly gets along with is his twin brother, Sideswipe, and even that can seem strained at times.
The main reason Optimus Prime keeps him around is most likely Sunstreaker's effectiveness in the battlefield. In the first few days on Earth, Sunstreaker diverted an attack by Thundercracker and Skywarp towards a human civilization so as to keep himself from harm. Perchance to Dream

When Shockwave took control over the Decepticons and possession of the Ark, he destroyed Sunstreaker's body as a demonstration and warning to the deposed Megatron. The New Order Because of this, Sunstreaker's body was in disrepair for a very long time, and at one point, when [[G.B.
However, Sunstreaker was fully repaired in time to view the duel between Blaster and Grimlock on the moon. Totaled! The subsequent massive battle with the Decepticons apparently left him badly damaged once more, as he wound up in stasis aboard the Ark again, to be revived by Nucleon in 1990, when he and the other newly revived Autobots joined the attack on Unicron. On the Edge of Extinction! Surprisingly, he survived that battle as he was able to attend the first meeting of the shaky Autobot-Decepticon alliance. {{Storylink|Exodus!
Early into the Autobot-Decepticon war, Sunstreaker was a member of the Magnificent Six. While they were on a mission to the Stanix region of Cybertron, he made a remarkably callous joke that convinced their allies to turn them over to the Decepticons. The entire unit was tortured for a week, and Stampede was killed. Nice. The Magnificent Six!

An injured Sunstreaker, along with several other Autobots, was awakened not by Nucleon, but by Galvatron's Dream-Inducing Bug. Galvatron had studied their dreams in the aim of finding dissenting members of the Autobots that he hoped to put into his own employ, but after a short skirmish, Galvatron's device was placed on himself. Sunstreaker and the others would go on to join the Earthforce unit.

Later, Sunstreaker was sent on a new mission to the Stanix region of Cybertron with Silverbolt, Prowl, Wheeljack, Jazz, and Inferno by Optimus Prime. While there, he overcame the ghosts of the past and helped defeat the mad Decepticon Megadeath. Of course, he was the only member of the team that didn't seem particularly haunted by those events in the first place, but the others overcame them, and wasn't that nice for them? The Magnificent Six!
Sunstreaker was part of the original crew of Autobots aboard the Ark that crashed on Earth four million years ago. When reawakened in 1984, he and his brother Sideswipe were reformatted into Lamborghini sports cars. Sideswipe and Sunstreaker often operated together.

When Chip Chase was kidnapped by the Decepticons and brought to the recently conquered antimatter laboratory of Dr. Alcazar, the Autobots successfully staged a rescue operation to get him back. Sunstreaker then led a second team of Autobots into the lab, declaring that they had to get the antimatter cubes before it was too late, smashing a Sunstreaker-shaped hole in the wall. Unfortunately, he and the other Autobots were damaged when Megatron threw an antimatter cube at them. After returning to the Ark, Sunstreaker was heard to complain about a 'very sensitive junction' in his elbow, but was soon repaired quickly enough to arm wrestle with Sideswipe. When the antimatter-fueled Decepticons attacked the Ark, Sideswipe and Sunstreaker took to the air to battle with the incoming Seeker jets, in a rambunctious m- if ultimately ineffective m- display of "jet judo." After the Decepticons were defeated, Sunstreaker congratulated Chip, declaring him a hero and gave him a ride on his shoulder. Roll For It

After the humans of Central City were duped into believing that the Autobots were evil, Sunstreaker commented that he always thought knew that they would turn on the Autobots, and declared them an inferior lifeform...right as Chip, Spike, and Sparkplug Witwicky were in the control room. They probably shouldn't be too insulted, as Sunstreaker considers everyone else an inferior lifeform. Megatron's Master Plan, Part 1

Sunstreaker was one of several Autobots who glommed onto Hoist's job as a Hollywood extra in the hopes of becoming a movie star. This mainly resulted in him wearing a ridiculous alien mask and spouting out stilted, wooden dialog. Hoist Goes Hollywood

Before the Decepticon attack on Autobot City, Sunstreaker was helping Kup move a roadblock. He was knocked over when Hot Rod and Daniel Witwicky drove through it.

Meanwhile, he was also on Moon Base One and helped pilot the shuttle that flew Optimus Prime and the Dinobots to Autobot City.
After the Pax Cybertronia, Sunstreaker left Cybertron with four other survivors of the Great War (Sideswipe, Roulette, Shadow Striker, and Trailbreaker). One year after Cybertron was reformatted into a technorganic planet, they returned. They were greeted by many of the Maximal and Predacon inhabitants and with vast media coverage.

However, what appeared to be celebratory fireworks struck the five Autobots and also the Maximals Silverbolt and Blackarachnia. They were transported to a fiery cauldron deep within Unicron, where all but Trailbreaker were rebuilt painfully into new bodies.

Seeing an arena up ahead, the seven moved towards it, only to be attacked by a swarm of shape-shifting, lava-like creatures. Sunstreaker and the others were overwhelmed and taken into the arena (or, the Cauldron), where they were caged along with a multitude of Transformers kidnapped from across the multiverse.

The Unicron-influenced ambiance of the place was slowly driving the more violent of the group mad. This, of course, included Sunstreaker. He and Sideswipe were forced into combat in the arena (each wielding spiffy Energon weapons), but were rescued by a reborn Optimus Primal. The group, sans a corrupted Blackarachnia and Shadow Striker, fled back to Cybertron.
Sunstreaker is a member of the Cybertron (Autobot) Race Team, which may or may not have any other Transformers on it. He's sort of a mascot for them, and the team doesn't actually use him in races. He resents that people pay more attention to him as a promotional image than as a race car.

Sunstreaker is partnered with m- for unknown reasons m- the human "race queen" model Junko Shiragami, and acts as her car. Once, Sunstreaker got into a race with a human-driven sports car, much to Junko's dismay. He used his transformation ability to take a particularly sharp curve, destroying a road sign in the process, for which Junko chewed him out.

Sunstreaker was part of Operation Liberation in 1998, a joint human-Autobot effort to defeat the Earth-bounded Decepticons. At the end it was a success, and the captured Decepticons, along with the Autobots and a human crew, departed Earth en route to Cybertron in the Ark II. The ship, however, was sabotaged and exploded upon liftoff.

A few years later Megatron and other Transformers, including Autobots, were seen causing havoc. It was discovered that Lazarus, a scientist who participated in the Ark II project, was responsible for the sabotage of the Ark II and the resurrection of several Transformers under his control via technological tampering. Prime Directive issue 1

General Hallo of the U.S. Military contacted Spike Witwicky to ask him if he could do something to help them reactivate Optimus Prime, whom they had recovered locked in a state of stasis. Spike managed to reactivate Optimus with a portion of the Matrix that Optimus had given him prior the ill-fated journey of the Ark II. Optimus subsequently went to the Arctic and used the Matrix to reactivate several Transformers, including Sunstreaker and his brother Sideswipe. Prime Directive issue 2

Sunstreaker accepted the new task at hand and fought alongside his brother when the Autobots faced the Decepticons at Lazarus' ruined base, before Hallo betrayed the Autobots by attempting to destroy both factions with a nuclear weapon. Prime Directive issue 3 The Autobots survived when Megatron's technovirus absorbed the blast, and Sunstreaker helped his comrades recover the captive Autobots imprisoned inside the base. Prime Directive issue 4

As Jazz's unit worked on Megatron's virus, Sunstreaker followed Optimus Prime to San Francisco for the last battle against Megatron and his Decepticons. When Superion was taken down, Sunstreaker and Sideswipe heroically (though foolishly) charged at Devastator; they where smashed between the giant Constructicon's palms for their trouble. After Optimus Prime destroyed Devastator's head, Sunstreaker was restrained by the surviving Decepticons. Prime Directive issue 5 However, through human intervention, Optimus Prime freed his Autobots and the battle was rejoined. Sunstreaker tag-teamed with his brother to pummel Soundwave, though the Decepticons eventually escaped when Superion sacrificed his life to save the city from General Hallo's unauthorized nuclear missile launch. After Optimus Prime came back online, Sunstreaker and Trailbreaker discovered the traitorous Grimlock buried under rubble. Prime Directive issue 6

When Ultra Magnus arrived on Earth to enforce Shockwave's edict that the Earth-bound Autobots surrender themselves to the Cybertronian alliance, Optimus Prime ordered a portion of his troops into hiding in Portland, Oregon. This group, led by Jazz, included Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, Ratchet, Brawn, Wheeljack, and Windcharger. However, Starscream, Soundwave, and his cassettes soon escaped to Earth with Bruticus. Attacking the Ark, they defeated all of Jazz's group minus Ratchet and Brawn. Sunstreaker and the others were left in a swamp, deactivated.

A ship crewed by Minibots (led by Bumblebee) arrived on Earth with supplies, and Warpath and Bumper pulled the deactivated from their would-be swampy grave. They were promptly arrested by Commander Marissa Faireborn of the Earth Defense Command and her armored troops. The damaged were repaired.
Long ago, before the war, Sunstreaker was a patron of illegal underground deathmatches in the Forge. where he cheered on Megatron in his first victory there. He returned several times more, including to watch Megatron's 54th battle in the arena, this time apparently alongside his brother, Sideswipe. Megatron Origin issue 2

When Megatron, rising in power and influence, put on a recruitment call to all-comers, Sunstreaker happily answered his call. Sideswipe tried to talk him out of joining the fights, to no avail. Sunstreaker apparently thought the call was for participation in the illegal gladiatorial games, but it was actually the first recruitment call for the Decepticon army. How they took Megatron's announcement, the apparent murder of a Senator, and how they faired when Autobot security forces raided the meeting is unknown. Megatron Origin issue 3 Neither he, nor any of the other Autobots-to-be that were present at the "rally", were seen again in prison or upon the Decepticons' escape and ravaging of Kaon. Megatron Origin issue 4
After that, Sunstreaker's history is spotty, but we know he was one of many Autobots trained by Kup. Spotlight: Kup The next time Sunstreaker is seen is the modern day, where he serves is part of a detachment of Autobots that has operated covertly on Earth for at least four years, attempting to foil a Decepticon insurgency. His attitude is about as superior as his original incarnation, dismissing the three humans Ratchet saves as "noisy creatures".

ongoing
Sunstreaker, along with Ironhide was assigned the task of escorting the noisy creatures back to the big wild world, Tulsa, Oklahoma. On a road in the vicinity of Lebanon, Missouri, Sunstreaker and company were ambushed by the Machination. He and his passenger Hunter O'Nion became separated from Ironhide and seemingly destroyed. It was soon revealed that it was not the case, the debris recovered by Optimus Prime was revealed by Ratchet to be an elaborate fake.
After re-awakening in a Machination stronghold, Hunter was horrified to find an unidentified being, possibly Cybertronian, had been creating a series of Sunstreaker "clones." Escalation issue 6
Meanwhile, Hot Rod and Wheeljack ran afoul of the Sunstreaker clones... piloted by Headmasters, humans who could transform into robot heads. Devastation issue 2 It turned out all of the Headmasters are connected to the original Sunstreaker and are leeching knowledge from him, a process that is extremely painful. (This had its disadvantage m- Sunstreaker doesn't read Autobot memos so the Machination have less inside knowledge than they think; Hot Rod and Wheeljack escaped by using a weapon that Sunstreaker didn't know about) Hunter, rather than kill the Autobot, asked for his help to learn how to be a Headmaster so he could pilot one of the Machination's spare clones. Devastation issue 3
: Sunstreaker was released as part of the first year of the Transformers line in the US. He transforms into a "Super Tuning" customized Lamborghini Countach LP500S with an exposed rear-mounted engine. Each robot-mode arm has a spring-launching mechanism, but these were severely neutered in the US for safety reasons.

: In 1986, he was made available as a mail-away item (as he was no longer shipping to retail shelves), several different promotions, among them a Digital Doom on the Highway to Destruction flier packed with most boxed Transformers toys. He cost $8 and two robot points.

: Sunstreaker is generally considered to be one of the early Generation 1 toys harder to find complete and unbroken. There also appears to be little chance of a reissue of the toy, as this mold has been stated by Hasbro and Takara representatives to be one of several whose original molding has been either lost or in a state of disrepair too extensive to justify the cost of re-casting.
Though both are yellow redecos of the mold, the detailing between the two is very different, with the Hasbro version being a direct color-swap of the paint mask previously used for Dead End, adding red to the robot-mode parts as well as a pair of black racing stripes in car mode. The Diaclone version was originally painted only in red or police deco; this is one of several items that have led to the fan speculation that Sunstreaker and Sideswipe's coloration and bio text were swapped around before their final release (another being that, in his bio, Sunstreaker feels that Sideswipe's car-mode lines are ruined by his rear-mounted engine, when in fact Sunstreaker is the one with said engine.) The statistics, however, are correct. This would also explain Sunstreaker's inexplicable red shoulders/car panel decals.

* In the Transformers series bible entry for his brother Sideswipe, Sunstreaker is referred to by a different name, Spinout . "Nearly the equal of his twin brother, Spinout, in combat, but less cold-blooded."
* Alternators Sunstreaker was originally planned as the first retool of the Side Swipe Dodge Viper toy. Early prototypes that were leaked to the public sported a sculpted Autobot logo, and development concept art and color maps detailed in the Transformers: Binaltech & TF Collection Complete Guide show a black-decoed figure, labelled as "Blackstreaker". This suggests he was still intended to be Sunstreaker but, like Tracks, Meister and Prowl, sporting the manufacturer's preferred coloring. A listing for "Blackstreaker" even appeared for a short time in the Wal-Mart computers. For reasons unknown, however, the toy was ultimately released as the Decepticon Dead End instead, possibly to satisfy fan demands for Decepticons in the line, but this is mere supposition. It took a couple of years until Sunstreaker would see shelves as originally intended.

Hot Rod is a bot of many toys!
Toys
Generation 1
* Hot Rod (Autobot Car, 1986/2000/2002)
: Japanese ID number: C-78

: Hot Rod was one of the first toys designed specifically for the Transformers toyline, versus being an imported pre-existing toy. Designer Floro Dery created Hot Rod for the animated film and then the toy was created from his model sheet. (The model sheet would be altered further after the toy was completed.) Hot Rod transforms from a robot into a "futuristic" hot rod sportscar based on the Nissan Dome Zero racecar designed in 1978. His robot mode bears some resemblance to Bandai's Super Robot Zanbo Ace and may have been partially inspired by it. The toy comes with two rifles. There are two versions of this toy; initial releases have die-cast (unpainted) metal feet, while later shipments use black plastic.

: In 2000, Takara re-released the Hot Rod toy, having had to retro-retool it from the Targetmaster release. In 2002, Hasbro released it as part of the Toys 'R' Us exclusive Commemorative Series line as Rodimus Major. Both versions use die-cast metal for his feet.

: The same mold is used by Black Rodimus.

* Rodimus Prime (Autobot Hero, 1986/2004)
: Japanese ID number: C-77

: Rodimus Prime was designed in much the same way as Hot Rod. Rodimus transforms from a robot and battle platform into a futuristicky Winnebago camper. The toy comes with a "Photon eliminator" rifle and two blast shields to attach to either side of his battle platform's cannon. (The yellow spoiler was also to be removed and replaced during transformation.) Like Hot Rod, there are materials variations; initial releases have metal toes with rubber tires, while latter shipments replaced both with black plastic.

: The metal-toes/rubber-ties version of the toy saw re-release in both Japan and the US in 2004.

: This mold was later redecoed as a lucky draw prize Primus.

* Hot Rod w/ Firebolt (Targetmaster, 1987/2004)
: Japanese ID number: C-110, TFC-13

: Hot Rod was re-released with his new Nebulan Targetmaster partner Firebolt a year after the original release. The toy was retooled to have larger pegholes in his fists and his engine block so the Targetmaster gun would fit. Latter versions of this toy retooled his lower legs to minimize the scraping of his thigh decals.

: Takara reissued Targetmaster Hot Rod in 2004 as sort of an "ultimate" version, with metal toes (the original versions all used plastic) and the twin rifles from the non-Targetmaster version.

* Star Convoy w/ Hot Rodimus (Autobot, 1991/2005)
: Japanese ID number: C-372

: Available only with Star Convoy, Hot Rod's Micromaster form is a simplified version of his original toy, transforming into the same futuristic race car. In 2005, Star Convoy was re-released with several deco changes; among them, the decals used on Hot Rod were changed to paint applications. When Star Convoy is in robot mode, Hot Rod can sit inside his chest.

*Crystal Rodimus (Autobot Car, 2001)
: Japanese ID number: C-78C

: One of the earliest e-Hobby exclusives, "Crystal" Rodimus uses the reissue Hot Rod mold, but cast almost entirely in transparent plastics. He was availbale only in a set with the evil clone Black Rodimus.

Choro Q
*Rodimus Convoy TV Version (2002)
:Japanese ID number: Q/05

: Transforming super deformed version of Rodimus Convoy containing a pull back motor. He came with small version of his rifle that can be held in his hand or attached to the top of the truck when in Choro Q (vehicle) mode.

*Rodimus Convoy Metallic Version (2002)
:Japanese ID number: Q/06

: This metallic version featured metallic flake paint for the body and gold paint for the wings on Rodimus' back. Otherwise, the toy is the same.

Classics
*Rodimus (Deluxe, 2006)

: Classics Rodimus is a sleeker, more streamlined version of the original, now transforming into a heavily-altered Dome Zero. His rear-mounted thruster engine becomes a hand-held weapon in robot mode, launching a spring-loaded missile. His left arm also hides a flip-out "comm unit" that is clearly supposed to be the buzzsaw he used for a brief period in the Movie.

: In a twist of delicious buttery fandom irony, Classics Rodimus has elements that were introduced in his Energon namesake, making him a somewhat backwards-homage. His face also appears to take visual cues from how he was drawn by Derek Yaniger in the Generation 2 comic book.

Titanium Series
*Rodimus (3-inch Robot Masters, 2006)

: Titanium Rodimus is a 3 inch tall, non-transforming, die-cast metal figurine. He has limited articulation, localized in his head, shoulders and waist. His gun (which looks an awful lot like Firebolt) is also removable. Excitement!

*Rodimus Prime (6-inch Cybertron Heroes, 2007)

: Titanium Cybertron Heroes Rodimus Prime is a mostly die-cast metal transforming toy based loosely upon the original Generation 1 Rodimus Prime toy. He features much greater articulation and bulkier body proportions.

: Unlike the original toy which separated into a robot and a battle station, the entire vehicle mode of the 6-inch Titanium version transforms into the robot mode. As with Classics Rodimus, Titanium Rodimus Prime takes some visual cues from the Energon version of the character in addition to the original toy and the animation model... and the actual Classics Rodimus toy, such as the engine-block dickie.

Kiss Players
*Hot Rodimus X SyaoSyao (Kiss Players, 2006)

: Kiss Players Hot Rodimus is a retool and redeco of the Alternators Mirage toy, transforming into a red Ford GT. His engine becomes a pair of pistols that double as tonfa weapons, and his fishing rod can be taken apart and reassembled to create a triple-barreled arm-mounted blaster reminiscent of the original Hot Rod's exhaust pipe weapons. His new head sculpt includes a retractable visor patterned after the one used in the movie.

:The toy also included a PVC figurine of the character's "Kiss Player" partner Shaoshao Li and a bamboo dumpling steamer.

Alternators
*Rodimus (Alternators, 2007)

: Alternators Rodimus is an exclusive figure, released at the San Diego Comic-Con and Hasbro Toy Shop in July 2007. It is a repaint of Kiss Players Hot Rodimus, which itself is a retool of Alternators Mirage. The figure uses the same head mold introduced in the Kiss Players figure, retaining the original's visor gimmick. The deco has been altered by changing the side striping from white to yellow, while the stripes over the hood, roof and trunk have been eliminated altogether, replaced by a Hot Rod-style flame graphic on the hood and front guards. Most of the Kiss Player deco remains in robot mode, including the yellow hands and flame graphics on the forearms, however the license plates (located at the knees in robot mode) have been changed to read "TOO HOT".

:Rodimus' weapons are the dual pistols/tonfa seen with both Mirage and Hot Rodimus, however his Kiss Player counterpart's fishing rod/eliminator and dumpling steamer weapons were not included in the Alternators release. They left the girl out too.

Robot Heroes
*Rodimus Vs Insecticon (2007)
Trivia
* The original Hot Rod toy was initially cast in a pinker plastic similar to the color of his animation model. For unknown reasons, this was later changed to a decidedly less show-accurate red before release, but the earlier version of the toy is visible in the original 1986 Hasbro toy catalogue, and the televised Sharkticon toy advert.

* Miscommunication between Hasbro and Takara that neglected to mention the fact that Rodimus Prime was supposed to be the new Autobot leader and the upgrade of Hot Rod led to Takara creating the original prototype for the G1 Hot Rod toy in three times the final size, about as tall as Beast Machines Nightscream. When Hasbro corrected Takara about those details, Takara's designers were disappointed because they had to make Rodimus Prime's toy larger than Hot Rod's.

* A new Rodimus Prime was devised for the 1991-1992 lineup, however this one did not leave the drawing board. He was to be a fire truck, apparently with a design in the spirit of Star Convoy and with transformation scheme similar to Inferno.

* For a short time, Takara contemplated releasing a Hot Rodimus (Hot Rod) remold of the Alternators Mirage toy as the next Binaltech release after Ginrai, but that plan became obsolete when Takara decided to cancel the Binaltech line as a mass retail line altogether. Instead, Hot Rodimus also ended up as part of the Kiss Players line, after "Ginrai" had previously become Kiss Players Convoy.

* One of the first concepts for Classics Rodimus was based around the Pagani Zonda super car, before the Dome Zero design was decided upon.
Various reproduction methods for the Transformers species have been demonstrated across various continuities.

Mechanical construction
Sometimes new transformers are simply built from scratch and that's all it takes. A suitable transformer body is constructed and when finished and turned on it just springs to life. Two notable examples of this type of reproduction appear in the Generation 1 cartoon when Wheeljack and co. created the Dinobots, and later when the temporarily super-intelligent Grimlock created the Technobots.

The Dinobots were initially very simple mentally, and were ordered to be deactivated because they were too dangerous. Wheeljack then developed a set of crown-like devices to place on the Dinobots which greatly enhanced their intellect, although they were still "dumb" and child-like compared to the other Autobots. The Technobots, on the other hand, were immediately fully-functional and some of them were even smarter than average Transformers. If one were to take these facts as canonically meaningful (rather than simply the whims of the writers of those episodes), it could be guessed that programming a functional Transformer brain from scratch is extremely difficult, such that even Wheeljack was not up to the job. Temporarily super-genius Grimlock may have been the only one capable.

At least on the surface, this "built from scratch" approach runs counter to claims in other episodes of the show that Vector Sigma is needed to create new Transformer life. (See below.) However, since Vector Sigma is presented as being a supercomputer, and not a "magical" device like the comics' Creation Matrix, it could fall in with the speculative statements above regarding Grimlock and Wheeljack. Perhaps Vector Sigma is simply an advanced enough computer that it is capable of constructing a working mind.

Infusion
In other stories, once a new Transformer body has been built it must still be infused with life (what the fiction from the Beast era and after would gloss as a spark) from a "god-like" outside source. In the Generation 1 cartoon this source was Vector Sigma; in the Marvel comics it was the Creation Matrix, which housed the essence of Primus, the Transformers' creator-god. In the Beast Era cartoons, sparks arrived from the Allspark, perhaps through Vector Sigma. (In many continuities each Transformers' life-force was a fragment of Primus' own.) The live action movie continuities function with the All Spark being the source of infusion as well, though in that case living and sentient are not quite the same thing (see: Real Gear Robot).

In the Young Corgi book Desert of Danger Hot Rod refers to his creation after the Ark left Cybertron as when he was "matrixed". How exactly this would have happened if Optimus Prime was aboard the Ark with the Matrix at the time is unknown, but one option might be the Matrix Flame.

The Matrix flame was an artifact which allowed Transformers on Cybertron to access the power of the Matrix even when it was no longer on Cybertron. Literally a flame, it was used to breath life in the super warrior Ultra Magnus in the UK comics. The flame was somehow linked to the Matrix, and when the Matrix was transported to another dimension during Target: 2006 the flame went out, forcing the Autobots on Cybertron to investigate.

The Dreamwave More than Meets the Eye Guide provides yet another method of infusion. According to the guide, in Dreamwave continuity Transformers generally begin life as a skeletal mass of partially formed circuits: a Protoform. These are kept in stasis pods filled with nurturing nutrient gel. They can be built to specific specifications or be fairly general allowing the robot to form naturally upon introduction of a spark. Sparks, and hence life, usually come from the Matrix, *BUT* if the Matrix is absent life can be granted by attuning the protoform to an energy wavelength similar to the Matrix and then applying a concentrated burst of energon. This alternative is rarely used as it is extremely resource consumptive, requiring restrictively high amounts of energon.

Resurrection
Though not quite the same as reproduction, a copy of the mind or essence of a previously living Transformer may be introduced into a new body and through some vague process return that Transformer to life. This occurred when Starscream created the Combaticons in the G1 cartoon, and in the comic when Prime used copies of the minds of existing Cybertronians to create the second series Autobot cars on Earth. Another example from the comic occurs when Optimus Prime himself is returned to life merely by inputting a human's floppy disk copy of his mind into a new body.

In his ending to the Beast Wars: Transmetal video game Ravage uses "a prototype cloning device, based on transreplication technology" to clone the deactivated G1 Decepticons on the Ark into new protoform bodies thus reviving them without altering the timeline (and erasing himself) by effectively doubling each robot.

This is included as a means of reproduction because it seems likely from the dialogue that the Autobot cars created via copied minds by Prime on Earth still existed on Cybertron when he left, meaning that if they survived the intermediate 4 million years, two of each of these individuals now existed.

In the Unicron Trilogy story "Linkage", Redline and Falcia combine energy from their spark frames in order to create a new body for the mind/soul of Twirl to inhabit after her Mini-Con storage panel was destroyed in battle. This led to an interesting relationship between Twirl and Falcia (see "Familial relationships" below).

Budding
The Transformers: Generation 2 comic introduced the concept of asexual "budding." Bubbles and lesions of apparently liquid metal formed on a robot's chest accompanied by energy discharge, the process grew more intense until the point where a large mass of liquid-metal burst free from the chest and slowly formed, first into a protoform-like blank figure, and then solidified into a full Transformer. Illustrations suggest that this was something of a communal event, with others surrounding the budding robot in a circle.

It was revealed that (in the Marvel continuity at least) early Transformers reproduced this way until they reached the population level Primus desired. At this turning point the practice stopped and all memory of it was erased. When the Cybertronian Empire (possibly under influence of the Liege Maximo) rediscovered and revived the process sometime during the 4 million years after the Ark's loss, the successive generations of robots produced were increasingly less sentient and emotional (as Primus's lifeforce was apparently spred thinner and thinner between them) and the lifeform called The Swarm was created as a byproduct.

It is established here that Transformers do have genetic material (the Transformer equivalent of DNA) within their cellular structures (yes, they also apparently have cellular structures, who knew). This genetic material is passed down from "parent" to "child" through budding. Its make-up is seen in the picture at left (apparently its design is not taught in the Transformer equivalent of High School Biology, as Megatron does not recognize what he's looking at until Perceptor explains). This genetic material and basic Transformer cellular structure is also passed to The Swarm.

The other notable fact is that Transformers who have undergone the budding process retain some sort of primal link to their offspring, thus even though they are galaxies apart the G1 Decepticon Onslaught doubles over in pain when his descendant Mindset is destroyed, and the Liege Maximo says he would know if his descendant, Megatron, were to die.

Sexual reproduction ???
Despite most continuities having male and female genders (gender being a mental and social classification as opposed to "sexes", a physical distinction) and a definite, strong history of romance existing between these genders, there is little canonical evidence for Transformers reproducing sexually. (Though admittedly there isn't a lot of direct evidence for humans reproducing sexually in most Transformers media, which is, after all, aimed towards kids.)

In the Generation 1 cartoon the male Transformer - Female Transformers romance could perhaps be explained as an artifact of Quintesson mental programming very closely echoing the organic life forms the Transformers were built to serve.

On only two occasions in Generation 1 do we get a hint of male and female Transformer romance leading to the formation of familly units and the creation of offspring. The first is subtle, Wheelie's backstory in some versions mentions his crashing on Quintessa with his parents. The second is more explicit, at the end of the Japanese Victory manga we find out that Deathsaurus and his forces were fighting all this time for the sake of his wife Esmeryl, the wives and sisters of the other Decepticons, and all their many children. Awww.

Appart from this, the best case for sexual reproduction in the species could probably be made from Beast Wars, where Rattrap makes numerous off-color remarks throughout the series, especially directed at Silverbolt and Blackarachnia. These comments strongly hint at something sex-like among Transformers, though it could of course be merely recreational rather than reproductive.

Airazor and Tigatron's fusion into Tigerhawk during Beast Wars could perhaps be seen as example of sex-like reproduction (two beings coming together and creating a new being that is a recombination of their components). Though it could also just be glossed as an extension of the usual Combiner-team type merger.

It is unknown what effect the Beast Machines reformatting of Transformers into technorganic beings that are equal part organic life and mechanical to a cellular level has on their reproductive options. It is conceivable but unexplored whether this new form of Transformer life could reproduce sexually.

It should be noted that during a dream-like vision, Blackarachnia and Silverbolt met in an ethereal state, and the two appeared to "merge" their sparks, which may be as close to sexual intercourse as Transformers get (perhaps a more spiritual act than physical).

In the Transformers Animated continuity it seems clear that Transformers do not reproduce sexually. Optimus Prime appears stunned when Sari tells him where human babies come from.

Familial relationships
One confusing aspect of this apparent lack of sexual reproduction is the canonical use of genealogical terminology to describe certain relationships. The most common of these is when two transformers regard each other as siblings: "brothers" (e.g. G1 Sideswipe and Sunstreaker, or Robots In Disguises Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus) or "sisters" (Roulette and Shadow Striker).

Again, the Dreamwave More than Meets the Eye Guide provides a partial possible answer. According to the guide when a spark naturally splits as it's being introduced to a protoform, it creates two robots who are "Brothers" such as Sideswipe and Sunstreaker. When such a spark division is artificially induced, the less balanced and self-reliant pair created are referred to as "Clones." (This definition of "Brother" may or may not apply to RID Prime and Magnus, whose brotherhood was said to result from the special circumstance of having been created simultaneously by Alpha Trion).

However, the "Beast Era" widened the issue of reproduction with Rattrap referring to his "great-aunt" Arcee and in general the practice of Maximals and Predacons referring to the Autobots and Decepticons as their respective "ancestors", as well as themselves as being their "descendants", implying a direct genetic (for want of a better term) lineage. Various sources of debatable canonicity suggest that Optimus Primal is specifically descended from Optimus Prime, usually through the phrase "his ancestor Optimus Prime" (though the events of Optimal Situation seem to prove that all Maximals could reasonably consider Optimus Prime their ancestor).
In the absence of sexual reproduction, the use and meaning of these genealogical references is difficult to explain. One possible explanation might be a situation such as when Airazor is brought to life in Beast Wars. Her spark and protoform is heavily damaged, and Cheetor allows some of his parts to be used as repalcements while Rhinox guides the procedure. To compare to humans, this is something like assisting with childbirth and donating blood or organs. It is unlikely that this happened enough to cause 'descendants' as they are described, however.

Other family designations exist as well. Wheelie has "parents" that were lost in his crash on Quintessa in some background material. The aforementioned Mini-Con Twirl very specifically calls Falcia her "mother" (which Falcia hates) and seems to treat Redline like a father, since the two's spark frame energy went into constructing her physical form. In the Armada cartoon, Side Swipe refers to Hot Shot as his brother after Hot Shot saves his life, indicating at least an understanding of the concept. The Unicron Trilogy universe has also used the term "cousin" for certain Transformers on occasion. The Japanese Generation 1 Victory manga features Decepticon wives and children. Even the live action movie features an Optimus and Megatron who are brothers, and it is mentioned in the related Nintendo DS game that Megatron "took the spark" of their father.

Toys
In the real life continuity, when two toy manufacturing companies love each other very much, one of them may start shooting Transformer design propositions to the other one. There, during several months of gestation, engineers will work on those designs, which will be developed into functional and manufacturable Transformers. Once the Transformers are ready to be produced, the design will be sent to marketing, and ultimately to the chain manufacturer for the delivery. Voilà! A new Transformer is born!

Summary
A busy construction site is attacked by driver-less construction equipment, and several components are stolen. The construction vehicles return to Decepticon headquarters and are revealed to be the newly built Constructicons. The components they stole are parts to a machine that will allow Megatron to absorb the power chip rectifiers from his Decepticon warriors.

While the final preparations are completed on the machine, Megatron flies to Autobot headquarters and makes Optimus Prime an offer he can’t refuse. Megatron offers Prime a one on one battle with the winner staying on Earth to do as he pleases, and the loser taking his army and exiling themselves to deep space. Prime, confident in his own abilities, accepts the challenge and sets the match.

Knowing that Prime would be unable to resist a chance to honorably end their conflict, Megatron returns to the Decepticon base and uses the newly completed machine to gain all of the special powers of his warriors. Skywarp’s teleportation, Thundercracker’s sonic boom, Rumble’s seismic attack, etc. Knowing that Megatron would now be unbeatable, Starscream voices concerns that the Autobot computer Teletraan I would be able to detect what Megatron had done. Anticipating this problem, Megatron dispatches the Constructicons to take care of the computer.

The two armies arrive at the battle site, and the contest begins. Megatron unleashes a barrage of powers, (while Starscream gives a running commentary) and Prime is outclassed at every step. Not knowing that he has been deceived, Prime concedes the fight and comments that he underestimated Megatron. The shocked Autobots begin the trek back to base, and the Decepticons follow to make sure they leave.

Meanwhile, the Constructicons have nearly tunneled their way into the Ark and Teletraan I. Teletraan I, sensing the imminent danger, activates the Dinobots. The Dinobots respond and start pounding on the Constructicons opening up a lava channel in the process. The battle not going in their favor, the Constructicons pull out one last trick and combine into the super warrior, Devastator. The returning Autobots see the battle, but are unable to help. Inside the Ark, Teletraan I is able to show that Megatron cheated, and the Autobots rush outside to help the Dinobots.

Distracted by one of Hound’s holograms, Devastator is shot by Optimus Prime and falls apart and into the lava. The other Decepticons are routed by the Autobots and also pushed into the lava. There is much rejoicing.

Notable Quotes
"Forgive me, but I believe your boast sounds vaguely familiar."
:-- Starscream, after hearing another of Megatron's promises to destroy the Autobots

"But I need my power chip rectifier. Besides, the Cybertron Code of Combat states that each combatant must fight as they are -- without additional reinforcements. You wouldn't want to cheat, would you, leader?" <br>
"I will win by any means! At any cost. Even if it means terminating you, Starscream!" <br>
"I was only making a legal point..." <br>
:-- Starscream and Megatron

"Let's see how he likes my new shockblast cannon! [The cannon explodes in his hands] ...It's a shock, alright." <br>
:-- Wheeljack

"It's no use, Scrapper. They've brought in the heavy artillery." <br>
"Then it's time we did the same -- only heavier!"
<br>
:-- Hook and Scrapper as the Constructicons prepare to merge into Devastator for the first time.

"Nothing defeats the Devastator! Nothing!" <br>
"Nothing, little one? What would you say about me? HAHAHA!" <br>
:-- Devastator and a "Giant Autobot".

"Is it really over, Optimus? I mean, have we seen the last of this war forever?" <br>
"Who can say, Spike? In this vast universe, is anything truly... forever?" <br>
:-- Spike and Optimus Prime, with a question that is quickly answered, at least for the audience.

"We... shall... rise... AGAIN." <br>
:-- Megatron floating in lava.
Other Notes
Technical/Animation Glitches
*The Rhino DVD version of this episode is full of animation errors that do not appear in the original broadcast version (as a result of incomplete film masters being used for the DVD), as well as crude attempts made by Rhino to fix some of these errors.
*When Megatron descends to speak to the Autobots, and at two points during the duel with Optimus Prime, he is colored dark grey.
*When Megatron laughs maniacally after being infused with the power of the other Decepticons, his head is disproportionally small, and his Decepticon insignia moves independently of his body.
*When Megatron talks to Starscream after that, the two rectangular things on Starscream's chest are colored white instead of black.
*In the Rhino DVD version, when the Constructicons move out to dig the passage to the Autobot headquarters, Mixmaster is constantly moving a bit back and forth while driving, as if the animation frames are not ordered properly.
*During the duel between Optimus Prime and Megatron, where are the Autobots seen in the background sitting, in midair?
*In the Rhino DVD version, when Skywarp boasts that Megatron acquired the power of teleportation from him, he is colored like Starscream, who is seen sitting right next to him.
*When the Autobots cheer inside their headquarters, Bumblebee's insignia is missing.

Continuity Errors
*The Constructicons' origin would be one of the most confusing and inconsistent of the series. In "Heavy Metal War", Megatron states that they were recently built on Earth; however, in the second season episode The Secret of Omega Supreme, Omega reveals that millions of years earlier he befriended the then-benevolent Constructicons and that they would be subsequently reprogrammed by Megatron as a combining force for evil. Further complicating the Constructicons origins is a flashback in Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4 where the Constructicons are shown creating Megatron, which contradicts the origin of being built on Earth.
*Where were you on THAT one, Flint Dille?
*The building site ruined and from which the components were stolen from by the Constructicons was actually a power plant that one of the construction workers stated to be able to provide whole planet with limitless energy. Evidently wasting the opportunity to harvest endless energy and fighting petty duels with Optimus Prime while being able to cheat is much more fun in the optics of Megatron than sticking to the old plan of acquiring as many energon cubes as possible and conquering the universe.
*Ironhide is apparently able to detect the Decepticons by himself, without relying on Teletraan I. However, in "The Ultimate Doom, Part 1", the Autobots were unable to detect the approaching Decepticons with Teletraan sabotaged.
*Was it really wise for Optimus to bring all the Autobots outside to watch the duel, thus leaving the headquarters undefended?
* It's strange that Starscream should point out the legal standings on Megatron's cheating and suggest he try to fight honorably; Decepticons by their very nature are treacherous and manipulative, and even if he's afraid of empowering Megs even more, surely he couldn't pass up an opportunity to crush the Autobots (like the plan almost did, for a while).

Transformers References
*This episode introduces the Constructicons and Devastator.

*This episode is also the "source" of the aborted "Lava Bath Safety" deco for the original Megatron toy.

Miscellaneous Trivia
*During Teletraan's montage of the sources of Megatron's acquired powers, the descriptions for the individual Decepticons are verbatim quotes from the Transformers Series Bible's "Decepticon Rolecall" page, albeit including several lost-in-translation typographical errors ("Decepticon Lider", "Decepticon Commicator", "Sky Warp"). The most notable of those is Rumble (misspelled as "Runble") being identified as a "red robot". Furthermore, the seemingly random numbers listed on those screens are actually Hasbro's product codes for the respective toys. Interestingly enough, even Reflector is given a product number, even though he was never released at mass retail. However, the renditions of the Decepticons are not the official model sheets for those characters, but rather all-new drawings.
Original Air Date: Saturday December 15, 1984
