One of the universals across all Transformers continuities has been the use of faction symbols to differentiate members of respective armies, and sometimes even sub-factions within armies.
*Japanese Decepticon <br>
Takara used this symbol, to represent the Decepticon (Combatron) sub-group in Car Robots- it's an upside-down G2 Autobot symbol, which had been molded into the Scourge toy, a redeco of G2 Laser Optimus Prime. The American version removed them, and used the traditional Decepticon symbol. Though it can be briefly seen in the cartoon, this symbol does not 'exist' in the American version.<br>

Megadeath is, even by Decepticon standards, quite mad. Rather than fighting for territory, Megadeath wants to sterilize whole regions of Cybertron with neutron bombs, then moves in to occupy them. This callous disregard for life horrifies even Decepticon High Command, who forbade the action and scuttled his chances of moving up in the ranks.

Megadeath has quietly recruited an elite cadre of troopers. He has cultivated and shaped these young Decepticons in his own image, to be loyal only to him on the day he may publicly challenge Megatron.

A master of psychological torture, Megadeath denies his victims respite or escape until they invariably bend to his will. He instills feelings of need, fear, helplessness and despair, then makes his victims reinforce those feelings via their own choices.

Megadeath's three closely-set eyes can fight powerful laser beams, and he has concussion cannons on each forearm. His is also equipped with missile launchers. He transforms into a bombing aircraft equipped for high-altitude observation. To power his exorbitantly energy-consumptive primary weapons, there is a nuclear power core burning behind plexiplastic inside his chest.

Long association has led Thunderwing to label Megadeath's mastery of psychological torture an 'unhealthy obsession.' Megadeath's need to prove he has bigger ball-bearings than the next 'bot will eventually get them chopped off.

Fiction
Marvel Comics UK continuity
<!--
Dreams of death and destruction. Used to be full fo rage, shi subordinates thought him crazy. he plans to show them all.

Six neutron bombs throughout Stanix, six thermonuclear blasts. he wanted to purce cybertron of all life and move in, not fight over it, colonizing the taken territory with ltitle fallotu to deal wif.

He woudl be hailed as a geinus, elevated to High Command, and might even become popular enought o challenge megatron

Thunderwing was a trooper, a youthful decepticon he'd been cultivating in his own image.

Thunderwing has a total disregard for life and a butnign ambition centered on himself- admirable traits sayeth Megadeath. he thought he had find leadership potential.

Megadeath built up an elite cadre of warriors around himself, liek thudnerwing- special troops loyal ot him if he challenged megatron one day.

Megadeath knows Steamhammer as a bungling foods, credits him as team leader.

Megadeath has three eyes. thudnerwing knows not to suggest a course of action without MD asking him to- id' ebs een as a challenge and MD is more powerful.

Thudneriwng has his shell.

Megadeath has three close set eyes, each capable of firing a powerful laser beam, stocky armor-plated grame. Forearm-mounted concussion cannons. Layers of sharp teeth.
Chest compartment covered with superstrong plexiplastic holding back nuclear fire.
short hacking laugh.

TW things MD is insane- but also his ticket to better things.

Decepticon High command had outlawed his neutronic warefare idea- refuring to even entertain it.

he's a general, his memory, turning Stannix into the acid wastes, si still an embarassement to the Decepticons today.

neutronic devices

Thudnerwing commands a unit of 5. Himself for air support, two tanks, and two footsoldiers who move in under tank cover. he softened the autobots all night until lunar dawn. megadeath's elite guard. his guard is intimidating because while Megatron may be insane Megadeath is ABSOLUTELY LOONEY
They knew who thnderwing was by a week in. he dodged their wall of laser fire with terrible ease. and blew up the dome. B this point Stampede was nearly hysterical and they decided to attack the 'cons. They sallied forth tot he 'con basecamp-- and foudn it abandoned, and believed they' won and the 'cons retreated.

The villagers betrayed them when they left, bringign the c'ons in to set a trap, lookign out for their own interests. megadeath came in to witness.

Megadeaths' face had melted. She shrugged off Silverbolt's electrostatic blasts, disregarding the chance they may fry him. He drags his twisted right leg. He speaks in a very breathy quiet vhice now, shouting drains him.

Megadeath moves quicker than jazz's eye can see to grab him by the throat-- deadly as ever.

they abandoned the Yuss neutralists to face the neutronic holocaust.

Jazz was suspended over a vat of bubblign smelt for 3 days, his skin blistering, before he started to go mad, startlignhsi torturer when he laughed.

BACKFIRE - cut the autobot down, start to work on Wheeljack with the Hydraulic Probe
Hydraulic Probe
Electro rods
Rust Bore
Mind Warp
dipped ina corrosive enzyme
pulled between two tank-mode troopers.

Megadeath wanted jazz to continue to suffer, denyign them madness and death for crossing him.
Stampede was imobilized with his optics clamped open, forced to watch his teammates suffering. he wanted to suffer with them.

Thudnerwing did not approve of this threatment of a valiant enemy, though he did not act to stop it... he sulked.

Once you lsoe thunderwing's respect- you can't earn it back. he's an unforgiving sort.

Each except stampede was given a plasma-drive blaster and told he was goignt o kill Stampede..

In two groons, this

featureless metal cell int he town's justice building.

bomber mode, circlign the town. he wanted to watch them search for the villages he'd hidden. when they disappeared, he came down to find them in persona, dn they attacked him.
Megadeath's leg was smashed in the fight 9he near-totaled prowl and Wheeljack) leaving him unable to transform-- and thus stuck with them.

When he refused to give up where the neutralists were- the autobots drove away. Megadeath was unable to walk away from the blast im time.

They all lied about amnesia rather than face th eknowledge of their own fear and cowardice.
Silverbolt understands fear- that you have to move beyond it, even if you need to fool yourself to do it.
But silverbolt told the AB's about his fear of heights- and they supproted him, so he could move beyond it.

megadeaht had a makeshift throne. Four million years to perfec this torture methods.

Megadeath is equippeld with missiles.

The neutralists were late beingign Jazz to torture. he exited thre throneroom- and was attacked by all 5, who shot him. Jazz cracked the plexiplastic of his chestplate. The 5 systematicly beat him to death, Prowl with a chunk of the coolant system- then stopped, Prol declarign they'dm bring him in.

Instead Megadeath pushed his hands through his chestplate, the foriegn matter creatign a chain reaction int he pwoer core to ignition. Megadeath would always rather die than lose.

They beat up the neutralists who came to take them to Megadeath, and the fith went otu of them. Silverbolt got them out of town.

Autobot code forbids killing helpless foes.
A weighty tome could no doubt be written about Wideload, an ancient warrior from Cybertron's deep past, but nobody really cares about him anyway. Able to combine with team leader Steamhammer into the towering Constructicon Maximus, he outlived this role by outliving said leader, through no fault of his own, and was last seen powerlinked to Storm Jet. Dirty tramp.
Animated continuity
Shrapnel, Kickback, and Bombshell escaped from the Nemesis as it crashed after shooting down the Ark. Landing in a swamp, the three gained alternate modes based on local insects, and may have gained their strange abilities from a few millenia of independant evolution on a strange world.

Eventually reunited with their Decepticon comrades, the three warriors put their powers on full display, as well as their willingness to "eat and run". The Insecticons would frequently become a part of one scheme or another, and then would betray/be betrayed by Megatron resulting in fighting between the two factions.

After the Battle of Autobot City, the three Insecticons find themselves battered and broken, and on the wrong end of the "weight" jettisoned from Astrotrain. All three are reformatted by Unicron into new bodies with some debate over who became who. However, the Insecticons were often seen in the Decepticon army throughout 2006.

Marvel Comics continuity
Events recounted in the UK Comics only are recorded in italics.

The Decepticon warriors Bombshell, Shrapnel, Kickback, Dirge, Thrust, and Ramjet were seemingly high-ranking officers under the command of Lord Straxus, Lord High Governor of Polyhex. Shrapnel served as Straxus's Executive Officer, and was presented as a cruel, sadistic being, with no notable sign of a speech impediment. It was he that supervised the technicians who received- and eventually decoded- a transmission from Soundwave on Earth, and later he who was given the distinctly thankless task of assisting Straxus in the management of the Space Bridge project.

The six appeared to serve as Darkmount's security in some fashion, since Shrapnel personally captured the Autobot Scrounge and brought him to Straxus- and, later, after Blaster had been deliberately taken prisoner, it was Shrapnel who brought him before the tyrant in the Space Bridge construction hangar- only to be assaulted by a less-than-grateful Decepticon leader. Later, all six were observed flying into battle against Autobot intruders.

At this point, the Insecticon trio transformed into forms which appeared to very closely resemble their later Earthen modes- albeit without any visible shifting of mass (i.e. Shrapnel is still the same size as in his robotic mode, as evidenced when he seizes hold of Scrounge). Later, during the attempt to assassinate Emirate Xaaron (itself in reality bait for the Wreckers' Operation:Volcano), Kickback does apparently reduce in size, so it's possible that the Insecticons already have this ability, but that it is optional, in the same way that Soundwave appears able to decide on a whim what size he wishes his alt-mode to be on any given day.

After the fall of Darkmount and the crippling of Straxus, the trio continued to be influential figures in the Cybertronian Decepticon Army, and were part of a battle unit regarded by the Autobots as being ten of the Decepticons' deadliest killers- specifically, Bombshell, Shrapnel, Kickback, Dirge, Thrust, Ramjet, Astrotrain, Blitzwing, Octane, and Macabre - so much so, in fact, that Emirate Xaaron planned the dangerous Operation:Volcano to lure them into a deadly trap, believing that the extermination of these ten would deliver a great psychological blow for the Resistance.

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on one's allegiance, after Roadbuster had tricked a doomed traitor Autobot into passing on fake information to a typically murderous Shrapnel, Operation:Volcano began to fall apart as a result of events on Earth. First, Ultra Magnus was removed from the Wreckers' strike force to travel to Earth, and second, after Kickback had completed reconnaissance, Megatron himself contacted the Decepticon attack group and ordered the Insecticons to report to Earth- immediately. Nine of the ten, unwilling to risk disobeying Megatron, returned to Polyhex. Macabre, however, determined to kill Xaaron, went on alone, and was killed after taking the life of the Wrecker leader Impactor. His status as a possible Insecticon remains unconfirmed.

Significantly, during these events, the trio are twice referred to as Insecticons by name, suggesting both that Cybertron does possess insect life, and that their forms are indeed already based upon it- an implication absent in the US strip.

The three Insecticons were sent to Earth via a repaired or rebuilt Space Bridge, where they fell under the command of Megatron, who altered them making minor modifications in order to allow them to transform into the likenesses of Earthside insects. Megatron intended to make use of the Space Bridge to revitalise Cybertron, by connecting a vast drilling pipe transdimensionally between Earth and a massive turbine and generator complex constructed on Cybertron, and drilling through Hoover Dam to do it. To this end, he utilised the Insecticons' unique talents- Bombshell used one of his Cerebro-shells to take the mind of one of the Dam's technical staff, Ricky Vasquez, Shrapnel's electrical powers were used to remote-operate the Dam's electrical machinery, and Kickback kicked a door down.

When the Aerialbots on their first mission intervened, both the Insecticons and their three Strike Plane comrades, also having travelled to Earth, fared badly against them. Shrapnel's antennae were twisted, courtesy of Air Raid's torque rifle, and ultimately Ricky Vasquez' free will and love of his daughter were enough to allow him to overcome Bombshell's cerebro-shell entirely, pulling Megatron's trigger and destroying the drill. Battered, Shrapnel and Kickback somewhat unceremoniously carried a still fulminating Megatron off into the distance. Meanwhile, however, Bombshell, having seen an opportunity in his small insect-size, attached himself to the Aerialbot leader Silverbolt, and returned with him to the Ark in secret.

Bombshell planted a cerebro-shell in the head of Optimus Prime, current head of the Earthbound Autobots. The shell failed to take full effect for unknown reasons, but did permit Megatron and Soundwave to tap into and monitor Optimus' thoughts- including the Creation Matrix. Thus, Bombshell was indirectly responsible for Megatron being able to give life to the Stunticons, and presumably (though it is never stated) the Combaticons as well.

The point at which he left the Ark is unknown, but the trio continued to make sporadic appearances amongst the Decepticon forces until the Underbase saga. Shrapnel notably used his electrical powers to remote-control the bridge of a cargo ship at one point, but beyond that, the trio seem to have faded into the background. Although not shown being deactivated or destroyed by Starscream during this conflict, they may have been taken out of action at this point, or possibly during the preceding inter-faction fighting. It is also possible that they simply chose to lie low for a while.

The Insecticons Chop Shop and Venom, although not specifically identified as Insecticons at any point in this continuity, were part of the Decepticons' original Mayhem Attack Squad, which was sent to Earth in fragile alliance with the Wreckers to hunt down and destroy Galvatron in late 1988-early 1989. Predictably, few of either group survived the encounter with the future Decepticon, and these Insecticons were apparently slaughtered- either by Galvatron or by the clone of Megatron with whom he had formed an alliance. As the story never presents a full roster of the Mayhem Attack Squad, it is generally assumed that Ransack and Barrage were also present, and were also killed.

The three original Insecticons were among the Decepticons recruited- and possibly reactivated- by Megatron on Earth while Scorponok and Optimus Prime were attempting to forge an Autobot-Decepticon alliance on Cybertron (to counter the approaching threat of Unicron), during the Decepticon Civil War. Although initially loyal to Megatron, they were bested in combat by Starscream - then theoretically under Shockwave's command- when he infiltrated Megatron's base. Starscream subdued the trio using an electrically charged flyswat known as a Rustbug Hoop- thereby proving the existence of Cybertronian insect life- and more or less blackmailed them into joining forces with himself and Soundwave in their plans to reunite both Earthbound Decepticon factions by disposing of Megatron and Shockwave and taking their place.

Bombshell's cerebro-shells, now apparently grown somewhat more reliable, were used at least twice during this period- once to drive the Aerialbot gestalt Superion into running amok, and later to rewrite the memories of journalist Irwin Spoon, ensuring the continued success of Soundwave and Starscream's smear campaign against the Autobots.

The fate of the Insecticons after this point is unknown. Shockwave, Soundwave and Starscream were all eventually returned to Cybertron, where they appear to have extremely grudgingly temporarily submitted to Optimus and Scorponok's leadership, while Megatron at least was recaptured and imprisoned in stasis in the Ark.

The Insecticons did not appear during the Unicron war, or during the later battle on Klo. It is possible that they, like Megatron, were deactivated inside the Ark as prisoners, or they may have been destroyed, or simply escaped once more.

During one alternate future, Shrapnel and Scavenger attempted to kill Daniel Witwicky on the planet of Junk in the year 2006, but this particular timeline was rewritten when Galvatron time-travelled back to 1987 to escape Rodimus Prime.

Dreamwave Comics continuity
Timelines: Descent into Evil continuity
By the time of the events of Descent Into Evil, the remnants of the Insecticons had been widely dispersed, apparently lacking access to their cloning abilities. The Decepticon general Deathsaurus, seeking to provide the Decepticon-Predacon Alliance with the means to return the balance of power to their favor, established a research facility on Ceti Alpha Seven. In this lab, the surviving Insecticons Buzzclaw and Dirge were analyzed, and their genetic cloning ability unlocked once more. The resultant Virulent Clones fought against an Autobot team sent to destroy the base, but were ultimately destroyed along with their base, and possibly Buzzclaw.
Magmatron's plan was to use the abandoned stasis pods on prehistoric Earth to build an army and take over Cybertron. Should Inferno not be counted as a Wrecker? After all, he wandered around with Sandstorm and Broadside in Firebug and CC&J, and was there for their last battle.
The Wreckers were introduced in UK continuity (neither the team, nor any of its members really appeared in the US stories) during the Target: 2006 storyline. They were originally led by an Autobot named Impactor, who was succeeded by Springer.
After the team's decimation during the events of Time Wars the survivors joined together with other "outsiders" both Autobot and and Decepticon to form the (aptly named) Survivors.
The Wreckers split from the Autobot forces after the disappearance of Optimus Prime in a space bridge explosion. Led by Springer, they clashed with Ratbat's Ultracons in the Tagan Heights for a time before reuniting with the Autobots and the Lightning-Strike-Coalition immediately prior to the Age of Internment.
The Wreckers are the Autobots who get called in when the odds of success are nonexistent, but the job needs to be done anyway. Assigned to Varas Centralus after the Decepticon infiltration on that planet went to Phase Six, they were pulled out and sent back to Cybertron at the order of Optimus Prime when the Autobot leader suspected that Thunderwing may have been behind the disappearance of the Calabi-Yau.

Why are we assuming that the SW guys are TF-sized? Scale's pretty fucked up in Attacktix, considering we have Mini-Cons about as big as Super Mode Optimus... as is TIME, since you've got guys from all eras of SW-dom involved. The whole "these guys are TF sized" is massive fannon that I don't think has any place in here. --M Sipher 05:38, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
: Because in the absense of contradicting evidence, why should we assume otherwise? Assuming the SW humans are actually very small seems to be as much of a fan assumption. There are TF-sized humans in the TF universe. Plenty of them. --ItsWalky 14:35, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
::I would argue that an "assumption" either way would be unwarrented, unless one wants to posit a) those pilots are not actually the Star Wars characters they seem intended to represent, or b) humans in the Star Wars universe are not the same size as Earth humans, I don't think Walky's got a very strong case. You need evidence to make statements like that. I vote to eliminate the scale passage.--G.B. Blackrock 15:44, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
::Well, the main bugbear about the heights of the SW guys is that canon SW material has official heights and weights listed, and if Darth Vader is two meters tall, then clearly, either he grew or the TFs shrunk when they hung out. -hx 16:01, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
:::But for the purposes of this Wiki, we are not considering non-TF material. See Spider-Man's page. --ItsWalky 16:41, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
:::: Which doesn't make up anything about Spider-Man that is contradictroy to the actual material, just jokingly omits anything ghtat is not directly relevant to his time spent with the Transformers. That's different. And the scale issue, as previously noted, is ALREADY shaky at best since all the TRANSFORMERS save Omega Supreme and Sentinel end up the same size. --M Sipher 19:42, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
::::: Spider-Man's entry does suggest his powers may come from his suit, which is the only logical conclusion we can gather from his single appearance, since the radioactive spider was never mentioned, and, hey, he has this suit. Likewise, since all the Attacktix material has Darth Vader attacking a similarly-sized Optimus Prime, that's not exactly an erroneous assumption. --ItsWalky 14:32, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
:::::: I thought black-costume Spider-Man's whole GIG was "awesome super suit that did super shit". Before it went Venom. --M Sipher 23:02, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
:::::::Yeah, but he still had the proportionate strength of a spider and the ability to climb up walls. If the suit had those powers, it got them from him. --ItsWalky 00:16, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Is there even any necessary reason why the SW TFs and the SW/TF Attacktix figures are the same continuity as each other?--G.B. Blackrock 21:25, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
: Well, there's this big set that includes characters from both franchises, with art of them fighting each other, and it says they fight each other, and you're supposed to make them fight each other. --ItsWalky 21:39, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
:: Yes, I'm well aware of that, but that doesn't really answer my question.... For example, if the TF Attacktix ultimately includes, say, G1 characters, instead of just UT continuity TFs (an assumption, I know), that would be a fairly strong argument against considering such toys to be linked in continuity with the toy franchises from which they came, since G1 and UT are already considered separate.
:: In any event, I'm with Siph on this one. Scale is a hairy issue within each franchise as it is (indeed, always has been). I see no reason for making the assumption that SW humans (non-Attacktix, especially) are on TF scale on the basis of Attacktix figures which, admittedly, do fight each other hand to hand as if the humans were on such scale. It certainly looks to me like TF Attacktix won't fit in continuity even with the UT scale TFs themselves.--G.B. Blackrock 22:17, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

:::I think the existance of Star Wars Transformers (should) override this question of scale. And yes- Iw ant a Star Wars/TF comic. Let Star Wars/TF be the result of a UT crossover for once! GO NUTS. I want TF to be insane. er. -Derik 00:37, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
::::Well, about those Star Wars TFs.... You realize, of course, that if we do accept that SW humans are TF sized, the SW Mecha of those Star Wars TF toys would represent HUGE TFs (along the lines of Don Figueroa's Macromasters).--G.B. Blackrock 13:42, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
:::::Yeah, I thought that'd be pretty neat. --ItsWalky 14:26, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
::::::Be that as it may, it represents an unsubstantiated assumption about SW humans in general. The most we can say is that this is true within "Attacktix" continuity....--G.B. Blackrock 18:53, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
It's been repeatedly established, at least throughout the G1 continuities, that most humanoid species are Transformer-sized. Furthermore, every piece of evidence points to the Star Wars characters being the same size as Transformers. Ratchet is the Autobots' Chief Medical Officer. If something's broke, he can fix it. Ratchet is known for his irreverent bedside manner; he loves having a good time, and his party-loving nature has given him a dry wit. He attaches little importance to his job, though this does not detract from the quality of his work, and believes he is expendable. Optimus Prime has trouble convincing Ratchet that this is far from the truth.

Although he's a healer, Ratchet often finds himself on the front lines of combat and, on occasion, the last hope the Autobots have. These pressures are sometimes too much for him to handle, but Ratchet ultimately never gives up.
Shortly after arriving on Earth, Sparkplug Witwicky suffered a heart attack, so Ratchet drove Sparkplug and his son Buster to the hospital. It was during this leave that Shockwave freed himself from his four million year sleep and completely wiped out the fuel-deprived Autobot forces with one blast.

Ratchet soon discovered, to his horror, that he was the last Autobot still functional on Earth, up against the entire Decepticon army. Covertly invading the Ark, he discovered that even the mighty Optimus Prime had fallen. However, Prime's head, though detached, still functioned, and the Autobot Commander told Ratchet that he must rise up to meet this challenge. Ratchet did not believe he could; he was not a warrior but a healer.

Still, Ratchet tried. Shockwave had returned in full strength and deposed the mighty Megatron. In his weakened state, Megatron could not hope to defeat Shockwave and reclaim his leadership, but Ratchet approached him with a possible solution. Ratchet knew how Shockwave had fallen 4 million years ago, and struck a deal -- if Ratchet could defeat Shockwave, Megatron would relinguish Decepticon control of the Ark and its wrecked Autobot inhabitants.

Ratchet journeyed to the Savage Land, where the Dinobots had fought Shockwave to a stalemate, leaving all dormant in a tarpit prison. He dug up the Dinobots and repaired them. Soon after, he met with Megatron on a snowy ski slope, and announced that he had fulfilled his half of the bargain. Shockwave was defeated. Megatron, of course, went back on his part of the deal and threatened to kill Ratchet. Ratchet declared that he knew all along Megatron would not hold his end of the bargain, admitted that he had not, in fact, defeated Shockwave. The Dinobots sprung up out of the snow surrounding Megatron, and fought him, but did not succeed. Megatron now stood alone, triumphant, mocking Ratchet and his lack of a warrior's edge. With nothing to lose, Ratchet charged Megatron, but he was ineffectual. However, the charge had loosened the ground on which Megatron stood, and the Decepticon leader fell off the cliffside and disappeared.

On their return trip to the Ark, Ratchet helped educate the Dinobots about human/Autobot relations by telling them the story of a recent battle with the Decepticons at a hydroelectric dam. When they arrived, Ratchet and the Dinobots found the Ark defended by Guardian, an Autobot combat drone which had been reprogrammed by Shockwave. Ratchet rescued the Dinobots from the powerful drone by remembering and exploiting one of its few weaknesses, an access port which could admit a fine laser. Ratchet then began the task of repairing the Autobots, placing priority on those whose command skills would be useful. This put him at odds with Dinobot leader Grimlock, who felt that the fallen Dinobot Swoop should be repaired first.

After the destruction of Optimus Prime, Ratchet was unable to repair him. Unable to deal with his failure, Ratchet wandered off on his own during Optimus' funeral. Ratchet decided that rather than moping, he should concern himself with the other damaged Autobots under his care, so he headed towards a junkyard to look for spare parts he could use. However, he was abducted in vehicle mode by the Mechanic and his accomplice Juan, when the two thieves were found by the police. Ratchet revealed himself when they arrived at the Mechanic's hideout, but the Mechanic froze Ratchet with his own surgical weapons and headed for the Ark, intent on finding technology that would ensure he would never be threatened by the police again. When he had unfrozen, Ratchet followed the human back to the Ark, but was defeated by his own surgical tools. But using pieces he took from the junkyard, he repaired Prowl, and the appearance of the police car frightened the Mechanic away. The Mechanic escaped with Ratchet's tools and the Power Booster Rod.

When an Underbase-powered Starscream decimated the Earthbound Autobot forces, Ratchet was left with the monumental task of repairing them. During a period of work-induced stress, he began to hallucinate visions of his patients attacking him and accusing him of being worthless. It was during this time that the Decepticon [Sports Car Patrol], posing as Autobots, offered to help transport Ratchet to Cybertron, where he could have access to new medical technology that had been created during his 4 million-year absence on Earth. He and three of the Sports Car Patrol took the bodies of Grimlock, Jazz, and Goldbug with him, though Ratchet was curious why Blackjack stayed behind on the Ark. Ratchet's concerns were answered when, upon arrival on Cybertron, he saw the believed-to-be-deceased Megatron standing before him, who had orchestrated the entire scheme.

Megatron brought Ratchet the remains of Starscream. He demanded Ratchet repair him while Blackjack held the Ark and its medical bay inhabitants hostage. Ratchet agreed, and he used Pretender technology to repair Starscream while secretly repairing Grimlock, Jazz, and Goldbug as well. After Pretender Starscream was sent to Earth, Megatron sought out Ratchet to kill him. Ratchet sprung his surprise on Megatron, but Megatron and his Micromasters were too powerful for them. The Pretenders and Micromasters' battle wandered outside the Decepticon base, and Ratchet was left alone. Sacrificing his life, Ratchet warped the bombs Blackjack had put on the Ark into the Decepticon base in an attempt to kill both he and Megatron. Megatron tried to escape through the warp portal, but Ratchet tackled him, and the base exploded.

Optimus Prime was devastated by the loss of Ratchet. He assigned the detective Nightbeat to investigate Ratchet's death, who hypothesized that Ratchet could possibly still be alive. There was an initial blast which could have knocked Ratchet into the portal and into Unspace, a netherworld between the warp portal's starting and ending points. A probe was sent to retrieve him, and it succeeded -- but it also brought back Megatron, who was fused with Ratchet as a single, monstrous being. The Ratchet/Megatron creature rampaged through the Ark, wounding several Autobots, but Optimus Prime would not let them harm it. This put Optimus Prime in an awkward position -- was the life of Ratchet worth the possible loss of his other troops? The creature fought his way into the engine rooms and began tearing stuf apart, and Prime's choice was made for him. The creature must be stopped. Prime fought Ratchet/Megatron to a standstill, and, alarmingly, the part that was Ratchet took control, and pulled Prime's gun to his own forehead, pleading for the Autobot Commander to put him out of his misery.

In an unpopular decision, Optimus Prime ordered Fixit to separate Megatron and Ratchet, even if it meant saving Megatron. Bonded at a molecular level, neither could survive without the other, even when separated. Separated, they remained in stasis on the Ark until Grimlock and his Nucleon-revived Dinobots found the Ark abandoned during the Transformers' battle with Unicron. They filled the entire medical bay chambers with Nucleon, not aware that Megatron lay there in storage. Shockwave and Starscream stole the Ark after Unicron was defeated, in an attempt to return to Earth and conquer it. However, just as Megatron awoke, Starscream and Shockwave were interrupted by Galvatron II, who had snuck on board before launch. While Galvatron and Megatron teamed up on Shockwave, Starscream went to check on any other possible survivors in the medical bay. He found Ratchet, whose mind was still connected to Megatron's, and Starscream fought the confused Autobot easily. However, when Starscream mused that Ratchet was no fun to kill, Ratchet became enraged and defeated him in a berserker state. Determined to end what he had started, Ratchet blew up the Ark as it was approaching Earth's orbit, sending all three Decepticons and himself to a supposed death.

(Note: In the Generation 2 comics, despite Megatron and Ratchet's inseparable mind-link, Megatron's return was without Ratchet, who is unmentioned outside of Optimus Prime's flashbacks.)

Ratchet served as chief medical officer on the Ark before and after it crashed on Earth and stranded the Autobots and Decepticons there. In addition to patching up his fellow warriors whenever someone (usually Megatron) had roughed them up a little, Ratchet was also in charge of helping whenever Wheeljack had another invention in the making. Working together, the two Autobots built and designed the Dinobots more or less from scratch - and did not do a pretty bad job, considering they were working with substandard materials. Ratchet was also responsible for saving Optimus Prime's life, performing a daring surgery on the Autobot leader while subjected to attacks by Laserbeak. When Skyfire refused to assassinate the Autobots and was gunned down by Starscream, it was Ratchet who reconstructed the giant Decepticon scientist and gave him the chance to reform.

Ratchet's greatest strength, unfortunately, also led to his downfall. While piloting a secret mission to Autobot City in order to gather a stockpile of energon, Ratchet and his allies were attacked by Megatron. In the middle of the fighting, Ratchet was distracted when his comrade Ironhide was struck down. Lowering his guard, Ratchet himself was then shot repeatedly and left for dead on the floor of the shuttle as the Decepticons continued with their attack on Autobot City. Ratchet's corpse was recovered after the battle, and left to lie in state aboard a funeral satellite with all of the other Autobots who fell that day. Sadly, it was not Ratchet's fate to rest in peace: his body was destroyed along with the rest of the satellite when it was obliterated during an attack by Galvatron.
8.2 million years ago, Ratchet accompanied Optimus Prime, Prowl, and red Alert to the Sub-Orbital District of Iacon, whoch had been devastated after Megatron activated the planetary engines. He found no life signs in the entire blast radius.

600 000 years later, Ratchet remained with the Prowl-led Autobots after Optimus Prime disappeared in a space bridge explosion. He repaired Skids after he was damaged in a battle with Trypticon.

Ratchet was among the crew of the Ark when it crashed on Earth, and awoke in 1984 to battle the Decepticons. After years of fighting, Ratchet and the other Autobots took part in Operation Liberation in 1998, a joint human/Autobot operation that defeated and captured the Earth-bound Decepticons. However, the Ark II, which was meant to convey the Autobots, the captured Decepticons, and a number of humans back to Cybertron was sabotaged by General Robert Hallo, sending Ratchet and his comrades to the bottom of the Arctic Ocean. Years later, Ratchet was recovered by the sinister Lazarus, who had recovered and reprogrammed a number of Transformers for his nefarious ends. However, when Megatron broke free of Lazarus' control, he hooked Ratchet and a number of other Autobots up to a device that generated a deadly 'metal virus'. Soon after, Optimus Prime detached Ratchet and the others from the doomsday device.

Repaired by his comrades, Ratchet took part in a battle in the Canadian Arctic with the Decepticons over possession of a crashed spacecraft containing Scourge. As the Autobots overwhelmed their foes, Shockwave arrived on the planet and gave them an ultimatum; surrender and return to a newly-unified Cybertron, or be destroyed. The Autobots returned to the Ark, where Optimus Prime assigned Ratchet to a Jazz-led team that was to remain on Earth. After Shockwave's lieutenant Ultra Magnus took Prime and others back to Cybertron, Ratchet and Wheeljack remained at the Ark as Jazz, Brawn, and Windcharger attempted to locate Scourge and his ship.

When Starscream and a team of Decepticons arrived on Earth and attacked the Ark's inhabitants, wanting the starship for themselves. In the initial assault, the Autobots managed to take Soundwave, his cassettes, Thundercracker, and Skywarp prisoner, but eventually all the Autobots but Ratchet and Brawn were defeated by the mighty Bruticus. Expecting a supply ship from Cybertron later that day, Ratchet and Brawn slipped past the Ark's beserk defense systems in order to contact the ship and warn them. However, before the battle could escalate further, it was interrupted by the arrival of Sunstorm, a Seeker seemingly powered by supernatural forces. An uneasy truce was formed between the small group of Autobots and Decepticons, and Ratchet begrudgingly put his medic skills to work on Starscream.

Ratchet later aided in the construction of Autobot City.
In an alternate timeline, a newly-formed human terrorist organization named Cobra uncovered the Ark buried in a dormant volcano. Finding two armies of giant transformable robots, they repurposed these aliens for their own use, rebuilding them so they could reconfigure into various Cobra-designed vehicles. Ratchet was reprogrammed and rebuilt into a Cobra HISS tank. Optimus Prime was able to break free from his reprogramming and awaken the other Transformers and, with the help of the human anti-terrorist task-force G.I.Joe, defeated Megatron and Cobra. An alliance between the Autobots and the United States government was formed.

A malfuction in Teletran-3 sent dozens of Transformers into various points in history, an act which, if unreversed, will result in a perpetual holocaust to be unleashed across Earth. To retrieve one Transformer and bring him home, a team of Cobra and G.I. Joe agents were sent 15 years into an apocalyptic future where Shockwave and his Decepticons rule. The remaining cyborged humans had formed a resistance which had only one lone Autobot warrior who stood between them and utter annihilation. The last Autobot alive, Ratchet had grown bitter and battlehardened after years of guerilla warfare, and demanded the team sent to bring him back to the present day help him complete one more mission. Ratchet, the Joes, and the Cobra agents were successful in freeing a factory nearby was manned by enslaved humans, but Ratchet refused to go home with them and abandon his calling. Barbeque returned Ratchet home against his wishes, and as Ratchet cursed the stupid little creature, the Shockwave of the present day shot Ratchet in the back, presumably killing him.
The Autobots and Decepticons had waged a secret, hidden war successfully on Earth for many years. This all changed when, during an undercover mission, Ratchet revealed himself to three humans -- Verity Carlo, Hunter O'Nion, and Jimmy Pink -- in the course of saving their lives. This action subjected Ratchet to the wrath of Prowl for breaking procedure, who threatened disciplinary action. Ratchet defended his breach of protocol, citing his pledge to safeguard all life.

He was seemingly alone in his convinctions, until Bumblebee agreed to help him and the humans investigate an abandoned Decepticon bunker in Nebraska. After they had sent the three humans into the bunker, Bumblebee and Ratchet were attacked by Blitzwing and Thundercracker. After Blitzwing defeated Ratchet, he fired into the bunker, beginning its collapse. The two Autobots were able to rescue the humans from being buried alive and retreat from the growing sinkhole as Megatron burst from underneath, enraged. Thankfully for them, Megatron was more concerned with the treachery of Blitzwing and Thundercracker, allowing Ratchet and the others to escape with their lives.
After a team of four (consisting of Fallback, Chromia, Flareup, and Ricochet) failed, Ratchet and Ironhide followed to help. After battling swarms of Virulent Clones and Buzzclaw, they finally met up with Deathsaurus himself. Ironhide stayed to fight the general, and Ratchet separated to find their fallen friends.

Ratchet managed to gather the fallen but was captured by Deathsaurus along with Ironhide. Both were restrained inside the lab, which was set to detonate. Before this happened, Ricochet snuck in and freed them, allowing them to gather the wounded and escape as the clone lab was destroyed.
The toy transformed from an ambulance to a robot and gun-station. A variant of the toy included red crosses on the top and sides of the vehicle. Ratchet and his retool/redeco buddy Ironhide, like all Diaclones, were designed to be piloted mecha, which is why he has a seat instead of a head. The Transformers version applied a face sticker to the back of the seat in lieu of a real sculpted noggin.
In robot mode, his lower vehicle portion becomes a mobile battle/repair platform. He could only be purchased along with Flareup.
Merchandise
A non-transformable PVC figurine of Ratchet was made for "Act 6" of Takara's Super Collection Figure line, a slight retooling of the Ironhide PVC with a new head and "gun"-hand (even though Ironhide's pelvis in animation was not the same as Ratchet's). He was placed in blind-packed boxes, and along with full-color versions, an all-pewter-finish version was made as well in equal numbers.

For the Hasbro Heroes of Cybertron version of SCF, Ratchet was cast entirely in clear-blue plastics then painted over completely, so a patch of unpainted plastic at the back of his would woudl emulate the light piping effect of previous toys. He was part of the fifth and final wave of Heroes of Cybertron, and came with the right leg to the "build-a-bot" large PVC of Metroplex.

On their long return to the Ark, Ratchet helped educate the Dinobots about human/Autobot relations by telling them the story of a recent battle with the Decepticons at a hydroelectric dam. Upon their return to the Ark, Ratchet and the Dinobots found it protected by Guardian, an Autobot combat drone which had been reprogrammed by Shockwave.

Devil's Due G.I.Joe vs Transformers

Years after the Decepticon and Autobot Wars have ended, Ratchet and five other Autobots were sent to Ceti Alpha Seven to destroy General Deathsaurus' Insecticon clone lab and stop his planned Decepticon uprising.

* Ratchet (1984/1999/2001)
: Japanese ID number: 99

: Ratchet was originally a Onebox Ambulance Type toy from Takara's Diaclone line before Hasbro brought Transformers to North America.

: In 2001, he was reissued in Japan as an e-Hobby exclusive, paired with Ironhide. It is worth noting that Ratchet was originally only available as a mail-away during the original Japanese run.
* Autobot Ratchet & Flareup (2005)
: One of two "souvenir" packages exclusive to 2005, Ratchet is a retooling of the Energon Autobot Tow-Line with a new head, transforming into a large utility van. In robot mode, his lower vehicle portion becomes a mobile battle/repair platform. The mold's standard "receiver dish" weapon was not produced; instead he came with a new "light bar" that pegged onto his roof in much the same manner.

Trivia
*Bob Budiansky has said that he named Ratchet after the less-friendly medic Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
The Nebulans who end up as the Autobots' Targetmasters are explicitly using codenames in the comic, so we should probably find a way to reword that bit of the Marvel entry. Also, I'd dispute that Galen and Firebolt were the only Nebulans killed in action. Nightstick was crushed by Megatron, and I'd suspect that Arcana and Gort died with their partners.
