He's a rogue government engineer turned arms dealer who likes making smug, self-important, meandering speeches while folding origami.

How he got the scar over his left eye is unknown. Maybe someone got sick of listening to him.

Fiction
Dreamwave comics continuity
Engineer Adam Rook was hired in 1997 by US General Robert Hallo to design and build an army of intelligent shapeshifting robot soldiers. Despite ample resources and staff, each of Project Lazarus' fifty protoypes was an abject failure. Confronted with these setbacks, Hallo changed course, and took advantage of the recent Autobot/Human defeat of the Decepticons to experiment upon the deactivated Decepticons. Eventually, Rook succeeded in creating a program to control Transformers - the program allowed specific objectives to be input into the Transformer's central intelligence, suppressing their free will but retaining a level of intelligence sufficient to make independent decisions while carrying out the mission.

In order to acquire the Autobots, Hallo plotted to destroy the Ark II, a ship carrying the victorious Autobots, their Decepticon prisoners, and several humans back to Cybertron. The plan was successful - the Ark II exploded, killing its human passengers and depositing the Transformers into the Arctic Ocean, but Rook disappeared, taking the control program with him.

Over the next four years, Rook, motivated by greed, adopted the alias 'Lazarus' and built an organization to retrieve and reactivate the slumbering Transformers. From a remote base in the Northwest Territories, he succeeded in reviving a number of Transformers, including Soundwave, Hound, Bumblebee, Grimlock, Starscream, Thundercracker, Rumble, Ravage, Prowl, Laserbeak, Skywarp, Cliffjumper, Ratchet, Ironhide, Bluestreak, Huffer, Brawn - and his 'deluxe model', Megatron. He hired them out to a number of tyrants and terrorists, who used them to attack and exterminate their enemies. Often, he would take potential customers on tours of his base, showing them the 'merchandise' (and using his origami skills) to sell them on his services. On one such tour, Lazarus attempted to demonstrate his control program to a terrorist named Bishop, only to find that Subject 6 - Megatron - refused to kneel before him. Explaining it away as a 'minor wrinkle', Lazarus led Bishop away, failing to note that Megatron had switched himself back on...

Some time later, Lazarus sent Grimlock, Bumblebee, Soundwave, Starscream, Thundercracker, Rumble, Ravage, and Laserbeak to attack an Arctic SmitCo oil refinery, as a demonstration to an audience of potential buyers. Once the refinery was destroyed, he proceeded to auction off his Transformers, starting with Megatron. Bidding reached 85 million dollars (and a harem of wives) before Megatron unexpectedly awoke, sending Lazarus' clientele running for their lives. Megatron devastated the base, freed his fellow Decepticons from Lazarus' control, and chained Lazarus himself up like a dog. The Decepticon leader then used Lazarus as the first test subject for his latest doomsday device, a virus powered by the life-forces of captive Autobots and humans; the virus converted Lazarus' body to lifeless technomatter in a matter of seconds, presumably killing him. The statue-like corpse of Adam Rook was left as a permanent monument to his arrogance and avarice.
Squeezeplay doesn't draw much of a line between sabotage and devastation. He considers himself an unstoppable engine of destruction, and will charge into any situation without regards to safety. He's not an idiot -- he's merely harnessed the tactical advantages of brute force and intimidation. As Squeezeplay figures it, he is strong enough, tough enough, and fierce enough to plow through most battlefield fortifications and opponents without much damage, so...why not simply do that?

His Nebulan partner, Lokos, was a smuggler and air pirate on his home planet before joining the Decepticons. His relationship with Squeezeplay is two-fold. On the one hand, Lokos was always a creative and crafty criminal, and so he tries to get Squeezeplay to use his head more in combat. On the other hand, though, he recognizes the sheer brutal effectiveness of his partner's methods, and so more often than not is comfortable just to let Squeezeplay have his fun.
Squeezeplay worked with his partners Horri-Bull and Fangry in manipulating a group of human bounty hunters called the Roadjammers into capturing the Autobots for them. When the Autobots reorganized with the Neo-Knights for a counter-offensive, Squeezeplay was blasted with considerable power by the humans Rapture and Dynamo. End of the Road!
{{note|Squeezeplay's origin is unknown.
: Squeezeplay allegedly has a "crab mode", but it's more like a bipedal creature grew out of the underside of a crab, and wears the crustacean as a hat. His tail detaches into a handheld shield...mace...gun...whatever. There is a compartment which allows Squeezeplay to store Lokos in his tummy. (Yum!) It hinges, most unfortunately, at his groin.

: In robot mode, like all Headmaster toys, Squeezeplay has a panel on his chest which houses a spring-loaded mini-Tech-Spec-meter which gives readouts for Speed, Strength and Intelligence. The tumbler is activated when Lokos (or any other Headmaster unit) is plugged into his neck socket.

:As a smaller Headmaster Squeezeplay's power meter is on a single tumbler -- so any head plugged into Squeezeplay will result in the same stats. His small size also robbed him of the door that usually hides the tech spec meters on larger Headmasters. As a final indignity, Lokos has Squeezeplay's face plainly visible on his back again because he didn't get the flip-down panel of the 1987 Headmasters... or a bucket seat to sit in like the Autobots from 1988.

: This mold was released in Japan without changes as Cancer.

Detailed synopsis
Over the Arctic, Oktober Guard One is flying an experimental jet, when it is suddenly speared by a submarine under the ice. She ejects, but the plane is captured. It turns out that the plane was stolen by Lord Chumley, a game hunter, who tells his manservant Dinsmoore that he needs one more thing to complete his collection...the head of Optimus Prime.

Heading into town, Tracks and Bumblebee spot Blitzwing and Astrotrain and head after them. However, it is actually a trap set by Chumley. Back at the Autobot base, the Autobots are watching a soap opera which is interrupted by a news broadcast about the theft of the plane. Apparently, the Soviet Union is accusing the United States of America of the theft, which the U.S. denies, and the two countries are ready to go to war. Having not heard back from Bumblebee and Tracks, Prime orders to Autobots to search for their friends. However, Chumley has devised several traps for the Autobots and manages to capture Jazz, Beachcomber, Grapple, Blaster, and Inferno, the latter of whom sends a message to Prime about the capture. Not wanting to risk the others, Prime orders the Autobots to return to base.

While they regroup, Cosmos sends a message to Prime, saying that he's found the missing bots, who are being held in (poorly designed) traps intended to prevent them from escaping. Chumley himself contacts Prime and requests his presence. Pissed at seeing his friends tortured, Prime overloads Chumley's screen and orders the Autobots to remain at the base.

However, Megatron has been keeping an eye on the events and feels that Chumley, though a flesh creature, may be useful...especially since he's done more in two days than Megatron has done in two years, which Starscream takes the time to point out. Unaware that Chumley is only after Prime, Megatron sends Blitzwing and Astrotrain (surprise, surprise) to make a deal between Chumley and the Decepticons.

Arriving at Chumley's castle, Prime finds himself in a "well researched" mock-up of Cybertron. He unleashes a monster on Prime, but Prime is able to defeat it. Heading down a corridor, Prime finds a young woman imprisoned, but leaves. Blitzwing investigates, and gets trapped in a goo-net intended for Prime, much to Astrotrain's irritation. Finally, Chumley sends out a mechanical scorpion (no, not that one), but Prime is shot in the back by Astrotrain and apparently killed. Furious that his prize has been ruined, Chumley takes the Decepticons prisoner.

Knowing that Prime is alive, Bumblebee sends their coordinates to the Autobot leader, who enters the castle. A mechanical spider is dispatched, but Prime destroys it and heads into Chumley's control room. Dinsmoore hides in a tank while Chumley frees the Decepticons on the promise that they'll fight the Autobots. The Cons leave him to the mercy of Prime.

The Autobots return the plane to the Soviet Union, with Chumley strapped to the nose. The world thanks Optimus Prime for his efforts in solving the mystery.
