[[Cab]]'s return home is an unhappy one thanks to the latest scheme by the [[Decepticons]], which puts the life of his childhood friend [[Copo]] in danger.

==Detailed synopsis==

The [[Autobot]] [[Headmaster Junior]]s have some downtime, and [[Cab]] is overjoyed to return to the [[Karin Islands]]. He, [[Minerva]] and [[Shūta Gō|Shūta]] are already on their way as Cab's guardian [[Donq]] tells Cab's friend [[Copo]] of the prince's impending return to the island. However, Copo is suffering from a circulatory disease, and the visiting physician, [[Doctor Dado]], recommends to Donq that she be moved to the hospital on Viscas Island right away. Dado returns to his office, but then disaster strikes when he becomes a victim of the [[Decepticon]]s' latest plan{{m-}}to kidnap doctors from all around the world. [[Gilmer]] bursts through the floor and seizes the doctor, departing before Donq's shocked eyes.

Cab and the other Juniors soon arrive and are greeted by Donq, who, unwilling to trouble his prince any more than is necessary, does not tell them about Gilmer, but gives them the bad news about Copo's illness. They go to visit her in the medical hut, but as Cab presents her with a gift, she collapses, and Donq is forced to reveal that Doctor Dado has been kidnapped. Recognizing Gilmer from Donq's description, Shuta contacts [[Metalhawk]] at the Autobot base, and the four [[Godmaster]]s are deployed to take care of the situation.

Meanwhile, the captured doctors are being held on Atlan Island in the South Pacific by the Decepticon [[Pretender]]s under specific orders from [[Mega]], desperate to regain their lost standing among the Decepticon ranks. Amongst their number, Dado spots the circulatory expert who needs to treat Copo, [[Doctor Rhodan]], but [[Dauros]] silences them when he attempts to communicate with him. The rest of the Decepticons observe the scene from afar, gathered around a viewing monitor in their base, and Mega muses on the nature of her plan – to rob humans of their will to live by making them realize the fleetingness of life. This is, er, accomplished by removing doctors from the equation, apparently. Mmn.

As Copo's condition worsens, Cab and Minerva attempt to take her to Viscas Island themselves, only for their boat to be attacked by a [[Gulf]] [[Seacon (Masterforce)|Seacon]]. Thankfully, they are rescued by the timely arrival of the Godmasters aboard a hovercraft, which speedily carries everyone to Viscas Island. As the Godmasters return to Karin Island to pick up Shūta, they discover Doctor Dado floating in the water{{m-}}he has managed to escape the Decepticons, outracing Dauros and diving off a cliff into the ocean in the process, and tells the Autobots about the doctors held on Atlan Island. Shūta then escorts Dado to Viscas Island where he can tend to Copo while the Godmasters go to the rescue of Rhodan and the other doctors.

As night settles in, the Godmasters begin their attack on the island. [[Road King]] creates a distraction that draws the Decepticons out of their cave, and while [[Blood]] is occupied with him, [[Ranger]] attacks from behind, only to be met with resistance from Dauros. [[Lightfoot]] proceeds to tackle Gilmer directly, drawing him away from the cave and allowing [[Ginrai]] to slip inside. As the battle rages outside (with the Pretenders getting thoroughly thrashed), Ginrai explains to Rhodan and the other doctors that Copo's time is running out, and that he must take Rhodan to her right away, with no time to get the other doctors to safety. Putting the health of a patient before themselves, the doctors all encourage Rhodan to go to Copo's aid right away, but as they exit the cave, they are confronted with a number of Seacons that the Pretenders have summoned. As the beasts charge, the Godmasters leap to protect Rhodan, and unleash their most powerful super-moves. Lightfoot blasts a [[Tentakil (Masterforce)|Tentakil]] to smithereens with his Land Waterfall attack; Road King unleashes the Rotary Burst Typhoon, spinning himself and colliding with a Gulf with explosive results; Ranger reduces an [[Overbite (Masterforce)|Overbite]] to particles with a wave of his Heat Sand Attack; and Ginrai connects with his [[Transtector]] in time to let loose the almighty Atomic Fire Guts, destroying a [[Lobclaw]].

The Pretenders flee, returning to their base in disgrace, where [[Hydra and Buster]] reveal that they were the ones who came up with the plan. As the brothers argue with the Pretenders, Mega silences them, disgusted at the sight of comrades fighting, and tells them that it was not a failure, merely a first step.

The Autobots, meanwhile, rush to Viscas Island with Doctor Rhodan, who successfully treats Copo, leading to a full recovery. The Godmasters head back to Japan, but the Juniors are able to stay on the island and finally enjoy their vacation.
*Viscas Island was last seen in "[[A Fierce Battle!! The Autobots Are in Trouble]]".
*This episode features the first and (in all but one case) only use of the Godmasters' unique super-attacks, most notably Ginrai's soon-to-be famous "Fire Guts" attack. This is the only time he uses it in his basic robot form, and it is simply a powerful blast from his cannon that he names the "Atomic Fire Guts"{{m-}}a far cry from the even-more-dramatic super-finisher that it will become.

===Miscellaneous trivia===

*"Chojin" means "Super-God". The word is also used in the literal Japanese title of the series (''Chojin Masterforce''), but the R2 DVD translation for this episode title left it untranslated as we have done here, 'cause the translated form is bit on the redundant side here ("The Super-God Warriors, The Godmasters").
*It's pretty obvious why Hydra and Buster don't make plans for the team that often{{m-}}because this is the single most ridiculous Saturday-morning-cartoon scheme the Decepticons try to pull off in the entire series (and, indeed, is even more short-sighted and takes more liberties and assumptions that '''any''' of ''[[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s plans). Kidnapping doctors to make people fear for their health, thereby making them recognize the brevity of life, ''thereby'' making them lose the will to live? ''WHAT?''
*There would very much appear to be some of sort of thematic basis in the classic elements for the Godmasters' individual powers. Ginrai's is clearly Fire, Lightfoot's is Water, Ranger's would probably be Earth, and then we hit the wall. Although they do not use their powers in the series, their on-package [[bio]]s make it explicit that Buster and Hydra specifically possess control over Wind and Thunder respectively (the later being control of electricity, a typical "extra" element you'll find tossed into Japanese fiction), which leaves Road King's ability to, uh... spin around... without obvious classification.
==Detailed synopsis==

Driving down a deserted highway in his [[Transtector]] in the dead of night, [[Ginrai]] is suddenly swept up by a tornado and tossed to the side of the road. Thrown from his truck, he lies unconscious for some time before awakening to see a strange, shimmering ball floating in the air above him. Bolts of energy lance from the sphere, and Ginrai attempts to flee, but he is caught by one and trapped in it, unable to cross his [[Master-Brace]]s. Just then, three small figure-eight shapes descend from the sky and fire their own energy at the sphere, causing it to vanish. The figure-eights glow brightly and surround Ginrai...

...who awakes with a start in his bed. The dream has left the [[Godmaster]] vaguely unsettled, and the feeling is only worsened when he gets in his Transtector and discovers that three new sets of Master-Braces have appeared in its glove box! He immediately meets with [[Diver]], who contacts [[Metalhawk|Hawk]], and they arrange for Ginrai to bring the bracelets to the [[Autobot]] base in [[Japan]] for study. The [[Headmaster Junior]]s meet him at the harbour as his ship comes in...but watching from the rooftops nearby are the [[Decepticon]] Juniors, having been dispatched to keep an eye on the situation. As the four Autobots return to their base, the young Decepticons shadow them by moving through the forest at the side of the road, but [[Shūta Gō|Shūta]] spots them, and a battle ensues. Ginrai makes quick work of the three punks, and when [[Wilder]] and [[Bullhorn]] come around, they discover that the Autobots have captured [[Cancer]]!

Back at the Autobot base, Cancer fights and wriggles for all he's worth as Ginrai handcuffs him to a cot, much to [[Minerva]]'s disgust. She treats a cut on Cancer's cheek with minimal protestation from the boy, but when she tries offering him a glass of orange drink, he kicks it from her hand, shattering it and cutting her. Shūta and Cab are furious, but still Minerva prevents them from taking out their anger on Cancer. Meanwhile, Ginrai and Hawk attempt a scan of the bracelets Ginrai found, only for the equipment to explode when they attempt to gauge the level of power they contain. There is no doubt that these are the Master-Braces of three future Godmasters, but Ginrai is less than enthused, as his free-floating life is becoming increasing tied down by what feel like the manipulations of destiny. In a moment of anger, determined to understand properly what is happening to his life, he bursts into Cancer's cell and seizes the boy, demanding that Cancer tell him everything he knows about what Godmasters are. Minerva intervenes, getting Ginrai to back down, and offers Cancer the drink again. He relents and thirstily accepts. The Juniors are ordered from the room, and Ginrai repeats his question. This time, Cancer starts to give him answers...

Cancer relates the story of Godmasters as he has been told it by Giga and Mega. Godmasters, Giga claims, are godly beings from the depths of space, who serve as messengers for the Decepticons. The Godmasters currently on Earth came to the planet in the ancient past, although originally, they were not multiple beings, but one giant entity which split seven "offspring" off from itself when it entered Earth's atmosphere. The seven offspring fell on land, while the main body was buried deep in an ocean trench until the present day, when they awoke, took the form of Transtectors, and awaited human life with which to bond. Giga and Mega, it is revealed, are bonded to the main body.

Now aware that, although they have only three sets of Master-Braces, there are four more Godmasters hidden somewhere on Earth, the Autobots make a show of releasing Cancer. Ginrai however, slips a homing beacon onto the back of his shirt as he is taken back to the forest where Wilder and Bullhorn are still searching for him. As Cancer is being transported, [[Hydra (Masterforce)|Hydra]] and [[Buster (Masterforce)|Buster]] rendezvous with the two remaining Decepticon Juniors, arriving on the scene just as Cancer is being set free (with a wayward glance back in Minerva's direction). Hydra instantly spots the homing beacon and crushes it. The signal cutting out allows Ginrai and Hawk to realize that something is wrong, and Ginrai speeds to the Juniors' aid in battle against the Godmasters. Buster, however, has his blaster to Minerva's head...only for Cancer to snatch her away, begging the Godmaster brothers not to kill anyone! Surprised and distracted by this turn of events, Hydra is flattened by Ginrai and orders a retreat. Cancer blushes furiously as Minerva thanks him, claiming that it was merely payback for the drink and rushing off after his comrades.
==Other notes==

===Continuity errors===

*While their sudden appearance is basically just intended to be creepy and prophetic, the fact is, it's never actually explained where in the hell the other Master-Braces came from (they couldn't simply have been lying in the truck, or Ginrai would have found them when he found his own), nor why they weren't with their own Transtectors, the way [[Hydra and Buster]]'s were, or how [[Doubleclouder]]'s will be shown to be later in the series.

===Transformers references===

*The sphere of light seen by Ginrai in his prophetic dream is the same mysterious orb that viewers have been occasionally seeing in the Decepticon base. As we've explained before, it's the Decepticon emperor, [[Devil Z]], but that has not yet been revealed in the show, and the mystery surrounding it only increases with this episode.
*This episode returns to the enigmatic claim made by Mega and Giga that Godmasters are their children, as seen back in "[[A Hero is Chosen - His Name is Ginrai]]". We are now able to understand that claim—they are bonded to the "main body" (the identity of which will not be revealed until "[[Super Ginrai Gets Blown Away in the Desert!?]]", a dozen episodes away) from which the other seven Godmaster Transtectors split off. Hence, they consider those seven Godmasters their children. HOWEVER, this story does not fit in the slightest with what the video-exclusive segment added to "[[You Too Use the Masterforce to Transform!]]" reveals about Godmasters and their origins, or, indeed some other things seen in the show itself—least of all why, if they were all originally Decepticons, Ginrai's Master-Braces had Autobot symbols on them from the outset. Go read the [[Godmaster]] article for the proper origin of these guys. All indications would be that the story related in this episode is a skewed version of the truth, full of lies and half-truths passed on to Giga and Mega by Devil Z. So it's not particularly helpful that it's the ''only'' origin story told in the entire broadcast series.
*The silhouetted figures that Ginrai imagines when thinking of the Godmasters for the first time are, indeed, the animation models for [[Lightfoot]] and [[Road King]] at least; the third one doesn't look bulky enough to be [[Ranger]]. However, the second time they are shown, at the end of the episode, none of them really seem to match up.

===Miscellaneous trivia===
*It is not explicitly stated in the anime how Mega and Giga discovered the Transtector with which they became bonded. The ''Super-God Masterforce'' manga, however, reveals that they were a couple who drowned at sea. Drifting to the bottom of the chasm where the Transtector lay, they were restored to life by Devil Z and bonded with it.
: Cab's transtector is a red firetruck. The area between the cabin and the rear of the truck has a seat that Headmaster Cab can sit on, but he can also be stowed inside the cabin itself (this method isn't as secure, however). The ladder base has a ratcheted joint, allowing it to rotate, while the ladder itself can extend out to 22cm in length and also has a movable compound nozzle. His head guns can be stored on the sides of the vehicle while his rifle can be plugged onto the ladder.

: In robot mode, like all Headmaster toys, Cab's transtector has a flip-down panel on his chest which covers a spring-loaded mini-[[Tech Spec|Tech-Spec]]-meter which gives reads for Speed, Strength and Intelligence. The tumblers are activated when Cab (or any other Headmaster unit) is plugged into his neck socket. Cab has the transtector's face plainly visible on his back because, as a smaller Headmaster toy, he lacks the flip down panel featured on larger Headmasters.

: He shares a mold with the American Headmaster [[Hosehead]], with little or no changes.
The [[Autobot]]s attempt to stop a [[Decepticon]] plot to destroy the entire planet [[Mars]].

*'''English/Malay dub name:''' "Mars Explodes! Watch Out, Fortress Maximus!"

==Detailed synopsis==

[[Scorponok (G1)|Scorponok]] unveils his latest plan to the gathered [[Decepticon]]s; by planting a series of [[plasma energy]] bombs beneath the surface of Mars, and then triggering key explosions at the north and south poles, they can create a chain reaction that will destroy the planet, releasing more plasma energy for their devilish purposes.

As coincidence would have it, [[Spike Witwicky|Spike]], [[Daniel Witwicky|Daniel]], [[Wheelie]] and the [[Trainbot]]s are currently conducting a geological survey on Mars when unusual seismic activity on the planet attracts their attention. Separating to investigate, Daniel, Wheelie and [[Shouki]] watch as [[Hun-Gurrr]] and [[Rippersnapper]] emerge from a smoking crater, and they immediately radio a report to [[Athenia]] for help. The [[Headmaster]]s depart for Mars in [[Broadside (G1)|Broadside]] - [[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress]], however, is still concerned with the mysterious Decepticon activity on planet [[Zarak (planet)|Zarak]].

On [[Earth]], [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] orders the [[Technobot]]s to join the fight on Mars, but as they depart, they are intercepted by [[Trypticon]] and [[Sixshot]]. Although [[Metroplex (G1)|Metroplex]] comes to their aid, they are not able to make it to Mars.

Back on Mars, the Headmasters arrive in the midst of a firefight between the Trainbots and [[Predacon]]s. As the battle rages, Wheelie and Daniel are captured by the [[Terrorcon]]s and taken to the Decepticons' base in the tunnels beneath the planet's surface. There, once they are imprisoned behind energy bars, they learn of the villains' intent for Mars. Daniel has an emergency beacon hidden in the Autobot symbol on his [[exo-suit]], and to hide its activation, he and Wheelie stage a fight between themselves - much to the amusement of the Terrorcons - that allows Wheelie to grab it and alert Spike. The Headmasters rescue the two youths, and Fortress arrives as they attempt to force the bombing co-ordinates from the Decepticon Headmasters. They apparently succeed when [[Hardhead (G1)|Hardhead]] is able to trick [[Skullcruncher]] into becoming hypnotised by [[Mindwipe]], but the co-ordinates that he gives the Headmasters turn out to be a trap - jumping into the crater that they pinpoint, the four Autobots are trapped into a series of explosive energy coils. Chromedome calls out to Fortress to use the [[Master Sword]], but the commander is not mentally and physically prepared for the task, and the sword will not draw. As the explosions wrack the Headmasters below, a scream from Chromedome galvanizes Fortress, bringing the energies of his mind and body into harmony, and the Master Sword is unsheathed. However, as Fortress leaps from Battleship Maximus to initiate his transformation into [[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress Maximus]], the Decepticon Headmasters launch a plasma energy bomb directly at him. A huge explosion follows, with the power of the Master Sword and the power of the plasma energy cancelling each other out. Drained of all his power, Fortress plummets back to the surface of Mars as the Headmasters watch in horror...!
*The Predaking transformation sequence has a number of coloring mistakes, as does the Autobot Headmasters "Head On" sequence immediately after.
*In the English dub, the opening narration helpfully explains that Mars is the fourth largest planet in the solar system, and is more than 50% bigger than Earth. This is stupid.
==Detailed synopsis==

While [[Hot Rod]] and the Autobot [[Headmaster]]s search for the Matrix in the final possible location, the [[Decepticon]]s mobilize to stop them. [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] co-ordinates the Autobot response, with the [[Protectobot]]s intercepting the [[Combaticon]]s and the [[Technobots]] holding off the [[Terrorcon (G1)|Terrorcons]]. Hot Rod successfully locates the Matrix - which has still not regained its full power - but as he attempts to depart the battlefield with it, his way is barred by [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]] and the Decepticon Headmasters. The Autobot Headmasters come to his rescue, and the quintet head for Cybertron aboard the [[Trainbot]]s.

On Cybertron, Vector Sigma's destabilization continues, with the planet on the verge of self-destruction. [[Fortress Maximus|Fortress]] enters Cybertron's catacombs, following [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime's]] trail and using his telepathic powers to communicate with [[Alpha Trion]]'s ghost, in order to guide Prime through the tunnels. Threats as varied as [[energy leech]]es and monstrous rodents stand in Prime's way, but eventually, he makes it to Vector Sigma's chamber - only to discover [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]] and [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]] have made it there ahead of him! Fortress, Galvatron, Hot Rod and the Headmasters all soon arrive in quick succession, and to turn the tide of battle, Alpha Trion merges with the Matrix in Hot Rod's hands, re-energizing it and once again transforming Hot Rod into [[Rodimus Prime]]. The two Primes team up to defeat the Decepticons, but just as Rodimus is about to recharge Optimus Prime with the Matrix, Vector Sigma flares dangerously, and Prime leaps into action the only way he can - by fusing his own essence with the computer, bringing it back under control at the cost of his own life. With Cybertron back under Autobot control, the Decepticons flee, and Rodimus is left as Autobot commander once again.
===Animation and/or technical glitches===

*Prowl appears again in this episode. He's still supposed to be dead, but see [[Four Warriors Come Out Of The Sky#Continuity errors|here]] for the details.
*As Galvatron and the Decepticon Headmasters arrive to stop Hot Rod, Skullcruncher is colored like Weirdwolf, and Weirdwolf is colored like Sinnertwin.
*When arguing with Arcee and Wheelie, Blurr's chestplate windshield is miscolored.
*As Galvatron and the Decepticon Headmasters fire on Hot Rod as he and the Autobot Headmasters board the Trainbots, Mindwipe is missing his wings and Galvatron is missing his Decepticon insignia.

===Continuity errors===

*Okay, so, it takes Optimus Prime (who has ''made the trip before'') basically one-and-a-half episodes to traverse the tunnels and get to Vector Sigma's chamber, and yet Cyclonus and Scourge, who were on Earth earlier in ''this episode'', were able to ''beat him there''? And Galvatron and Rodimus, who only ''just'' left Earth a little while ago, make it to the chamber in what seems like only ''minutes''? What, did Optimus get lost on his way? Maybe that's why Alpha Trion's ghost came to guide him to Vector Sigma. Never ask Prime for directions, he's obviously horrible at them.

===Transformers references===

*The [[Energy leech|energy leeches]] in this episode are pretty much identical to the (slightly larger) creatures that appeared and did the same thing in ''[[The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 2]]''.
*One of the most bizarre threats that Prime comes up against on his journey through Cybertron is a pack of giant, purple rats with large rows of spines. Perhaps leftover [[Trans-Organic]]s?
*This episode foreshadows the telepathic powers possessed by the Headmasters, which will be expanded upon in ''[[Cybertron Is in Grave Danger, Part 2]]''.

===Miscellaneous trivia===

*"Convoy," of course, is the Japanese equivalent of [[Prime]]. The English term was used for the R2 DVD release of the episode.
*This episode is a study in how ''weird'' the Matrix is in Japan. With the wisdom of the ages having been drained to counteract the [[Hate Plague]] in ''The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 2,'' the Autobots have decided to recharge the Matrix by... hooking it up to a power station. The final chapter of the ''Headmasters'' manga tries to justify this a bit, or at least gussy it up, by pointing out that the energy is the "lifeforce of Earth," so presumably the power plant was gathering up natural energy. But, y'know. Still. And the fact that's it's actually recharged by Alpha Trion's ghost spinning around and going inside it isn't much better.
*While relaying information in cassette mode, Ratbat plays not a recording, but a summary of events in a unique voice, in the same manner that [[Ravage]] did in ''[[More Than Meets the Eye, Part 3]]''. Later in the series, however, he and the other Decepticon cassette animals suddenly start talking in their robot modes.
* The term "Double Convoy" in reference to Convoy and Rodimus Convoy teaming up is presumably a takeoff on the "Double Rider" team of Kamen Rider 1 and Kamen Rider 2 from the original ''[[Wikipedia:Kamen Rider|Kamen Rider]]'' series. (Coincidentally, or perhaps not, The company that makes ''Kamen Rider'' also did the animation for Season 1 and 2 of The G1 Cartoon.)
* In an odd touch, Rodimus Prime's character model seen here and in the remainder of his appearances in ''Headmasters'', is ''different'' from his U.S. character model in several subtle ways, seemingly taking inspiration from his [[Studio OX]] design. His eyes now have thick borders around them (although this does vary depending on the shot), the wheels on his upper arms now face forward rather than backward, and his yellow spoiler has been 'beefed-up' in robot mode.
* I can feel the heat!
'''After his latest attempt to overthrow Megatron's rule of the Decepticons, Starscream is banished from HQ, but this time, he hatches a plan...'''

==Summary==
[[Image:Starscreamsbrigade1.jpg|left|thumb|Buh-bye, Screamer.]]
Decades ago, when life existed only in black and white, humans waged war on one another on the island of Guadalcanal in the south Pacific. Some of their wrecked vehicles remained there as of 1985, where our story begins...

Within Decepticon Headquarters, Starscream and Megatron are having a spat. Predictably, it ends with Starscream shooting Megatron in the back and proclaiming himself the new leader. Megatron's tougher than that, though, and after waking up a few seconds later, he blasts Starscream and has Laserbeak dump him on Guadalcanal.

Humiliated and infuriated, Starscream stumbles upon the remnants of some old World War II vehicles, which inspire him to create an army of his own. Entering the space bridge by threatening Skywarp, he travels to [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] and steals the [[personality component]]s of five renegade Decepticons. Installing them into the wrecked vehicles, he transforms them into the [[Combaticon]]s. The quarrelsome warriors threaten to simply beat Starscream to a pulp, until he reveals that their new bodies do not contain energy absorbers, without which they cannot refuel: "No energy, no life." In exchange for the needed equipment, the Combaticons agree to obey Starscream's orders for the moment.

At the unveiling of the [[Optimus Prime Memorial]], Starscream and the Combaticons attack and kidnap Jazz and Cliffjumper. At the [[Decepticon space cruiser|Decepticon base]], Shockwave informs Megatron that the Combaticons' personality components are missing. Assuming the [[Autobot]]s are responsible, Megatron launches an attack on the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]]. However, Optimus Prime's demand to turn over Jazz and Cliffjumper causes Megatron to suspect Starscream.

[[Image:Starscreamsbrigade2.jpg|right|thumb|We all lost weight on the Subway diet!]]
Starscream and the Combaticons attack the Decepticons while they're attempting to refuel, allowing Starscream to capture Dirge and Ramjet as well, bringing their energy absorber count to four. Megatron, meanwhile, rallies his troops, and moves against Starscream and his army. In the ensuing battle, Megatron's trump card, Devastator, is easily brushed aside when Starscream reveals that the Combaticons can likewise combine into a single titan: Bruticus! The massive combiner scoops up Megatron in one hand and forces him to acknowledge Starscream as the new Decepticon leader.

The Autobots use the battle's distraction to rescue Jazz and Cliffjumper; meanwhile, the late-arriving [[Stunticon]]s look over the situation, and decide that Starscream is too likely to continue his rampage. Merging into Menasor, they defeat the unsuspecting Bruticus with one massive punch.

From the resultant crater, Megatron emerges; grabbing Starscream by the throat, he decrees that he and his army are banished from Earth. The usurpers are hauled away by [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]] and left stranded on a distant asteroid in deep space... from which Starscream swears vengeance.

'''Motormaster''': Megatron's in trouble. <br>
'''Motormaster''': So, you think Starscream's going to stop here?<br>
==Other notes==

===Animation and/or technical glitches===
*At several points in the episode, such as when Starscream approaches the Space Bridge, his eye colour changes from red to blue.
*When Megatron rallies the Decepticons before going after Starscream, Shockwave is seen among the group, even though he had been shown to still be on Cybertron.
*When Starscream says, "Don't think that it hasn't been fun." when he confronts Megatron, his wings are missing. Briefly afterwards, when Megatron says, "I see incompetence breeds even more incompetence!", Starscream's wings appear slightly bigger than they're supposed to be.
*When Powerglide flies over the Decepticons, his plane mode is not only white, but a different model.

===Continuity errors===
* Starscream maintains control of the Combaticons by not installing [[energy absorber]]s into them, thereby preventing them from re-energising. They are however later shown to re-energise anyway when they steal energy from a power plant.

*This episode was aired ''after'' [[Aerial Assault]], which also featured the [[Combaticons]].

===Transformers references===
* Earth builds a [[Optimus Prime Memorial|memorial]] to [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] before he's even dead...[[The Transformers: The Movie (1986)|Ominous]].
===Real-world references===
*Elements of World War II are shown in the episode with the abandoned military vehicles.
'''After his latest attempt to overthrow Megatron's rule of the Decepticons, Starscream is banished from HQ, but this time, he hatches a plan...'''

==Summary==

===Animation and/or technical glitches===

===Continuity errors===

'''An oversized stasis pod reveals the secrets of Protoform X.'''

{{episodenav |BW |season=2 |8 |prev=Other Visits (Part 2) |next=Code of Hero}}

==Summary==
Cheetor, on recon patrol, spots a giant stasis pod (labeled with a big yellow "X") crashed inside a patch of unstable [[energon]] deep inside a murky swamp. Optimus Primal orders Cheetor not to open the pod until he arrives. As Optimus and Silverbolt leave, Rhinox invokes the help of [[Primus]] if "that thing survived". However, the Predacons intercept the transmission, and Megatron sends Blackarachnia and Waspinator to retrieve it, subtly planting a listening device on the former. He calmly taps his chair armrest, possibly aware that Tarantulas left a bug of his own under it.

When Optimus and Silverbolt meet Cheetor beside the pod, Primal tells them what the pod means: The stasis pod holds "the dark secret of [[Axalon (BW)|''Axalon'']]'s journey," Protoform X. Protoform X was created in experiments attempting to replicate the mutation in the [[spark]] of [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]], making it indestructible, but the subject was treacherous and insane, so the ''Axalon'' was to dump the protoform "somewhere far, someplace barren."

Blackarachnia and Waspinator strike, attempting to take Protoform X for themselves. Attacking Silverbolt, Blackarachnia is angry that his code of honor won't allow him to fight back by hitting a female. Then Tarantulas arrives and threatens her. Silverbolt defends her, but the battle accidentally ignites the energon beneath Protoform X's stasis pod, which explodes and triggers an energon storm that scatters everyone for miles.

Blackarachnia and Silverbolt crash-land next to each other. They agree to work together, as they are far from their respective teams and Silverbolt's wing is broken. Tarantulas lands next to the pod; he investigates it, only to find it empty. He then turns to find ''something'' looming over him through the mist. His scream echoes for miles...

Optimus Primal and Cheetor return to the ''Axalon'', too damaged to search for Silverbolt. Blackarachnia and Silverbolt journey by foot, learning to trust each other, but Megatron is eavesdropping on them. They soon discover a piece of Tarantulas and conclude with dark humor that he is no longer a threat. Inferno is disgusted by their alliance, but Megatron notes that with Tarantulas out of the way, Blackarachnia no longer needs a protector. However, he's disappointed when Blackarachnia saves Silverbolt's life from an attacking sabertooth cat, making it apparent that she may have feelings for the Maximal.

Tarantulas' body is found—in several pieces. Silverbolt notes that Protoform X must have done this. Megatron, still eavesdropping, fashions an energon blade in preparation. Blackarachnia, freaked, prepares to high-tail it out of the area as an ominous form skitters through the fog behind them. Suddenly, the two find themselves face-to-face with Protoform X! Huge and frightening, it knocks them around effortlessly and is immune to their firepower. The monster lifts Silverbolt in its powerful claw, relishing his victim's mounting terror. Silverbolt screams in pain as X crushes him.

Primal and Cheetor arrive in the nick of time and attack, freeing Silverbolt. Blackarachnia joins them in blasting Protoform X, eventually driving it off a cliff edge. However, it transforms into tank mode and ascends the cliffside. Silverbolt throws a feather missile, knocking him down into another pile of raw energon, but not before Protoform X fires at Blackarachnia, knocking her off the other side of the cliff. Silverbolt jumps after her, unsure if his wing mechanism is healed, but he succeeds, and she is saved. The Maximals let her go before returning home. Blackarachnia watches them depart, then uses her grappling wire to depart, emphasizing a claim that she didn't need Silverbolt's last rescue.

Helpless in the pile of raw energon, Protoform X sees Megatron appear over him with the energon blade. X wakes up in the Predacon base to find that Megatron has carved out a piece of his spark and put it in tiny cage that, when squeezed, causes him tremendous pain. Megatron has Protoform X at his mercy and renames him "Rampage".
* Rhinox notes, "[[Primus]] help us all if that thing survived," which was the first reference to the Creator-God of the Transformers outside of the original Marvel comics.
* Protoform X was created as an attempt to duplicate [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]]'s "mutant indestructible spark." This is a reference (and a retcon in technobabble jargon) to Starscream's ghost in the third season of the original animated series and, more recently, to Starscream's appearance in the ''Beast Wars'' episode "[[Possession]]." It also explains why, as Optimus noted in "Possession", Starscream's records were sealed; the Council didn't want anyone else to make the same mistake they did and try to recreate Starscream's spark condition.

===Additional notes===
* Cheetor's [[Transmetal]] body can soak up energon, and instead of seizing up, he can shunt it away from his body in a burst of gas. Primal thinks this is rude, and Cheetor apologizes for "blasting one off." In other words, Transformers can [[The Low Road|fart]]. This absorption and release of energon radiation was rarely mentioned in the series.
*[[Rattrap]] does not appear in this episode.
*Apparently Blackarachnia can shoot a line downwards to save Silverbolt, however she can't shoot one upwards to scale the wall of the chasm they must venture through on foot. Her usual ability to scuttle up walls in beast mode is also seemingly offline. Wacky mis-matched buddy adventures can be a tricky business.

===Theatrical Release===

This episode was released theatrically in Japan as the second segment in the ''[[Beast Wars Special Super Lifeform Transformers]]''. The episode was included to get fans anticipating the long-awaited Japanese release of ''[[Beast Wars Metals]]'', seasons 2 and 3 of the American series. The episode was undubbed, however, meaning the dialogue was the original English version. There were no subtitles, either.
'''''The Transformers: The Movie''''' is an animated feature film based on the original Transformers toyline. It was released in the United States on August 8, 1986.

Often referred to by fans simply as "the movie" or "TFTM", this film opens with characters who had been featured in the first two years of the toyline and associated media (cartoons, comic books, etc.), but quickly introduces new characters and kills many of the old ones to make room. In particular, [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]], [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]], and [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] are all destroyed during the course of the film.

The movie was a step up in almost every area from the television series, with a more sophisticated plot, more serious treatment of war and violence, a hugely ambitious scope and a greatly increased animation budget with well-known celebrities providing voice work. For these reasons the film remains very popular with children of the 1980s.
==Brief synopsis==

[[Image:Unicronplanet.jpg|left|thumb|That's no moon. It's a space station.]]

A [[Scale|planet-sized Transformer]] called [[Unicron]] who eats other planets is approaching [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. As part of their continuing wars, the Autobots and Decepticons have a [[Battle of Autobot City|fierce battle]] on Earth which sees both Optimus Prime and Megatron mortally wounded. Prime passes the [[Matrix of Leadership]] to Ultra Magnus and dies, and Megatron is transformed by Unicron into [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]]. [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] (briefly) assumes leadership of the Decepticons, but is killed when Galvatron arrives at Cybertron. Galvatron then chases the surviving Autobots on Earth across space, splitting them up and taking the Matrix. The Autobots find their way back to each other, and follow Galvatron to Cybertron just as Unicron transforms into robot mode and begins to eat their world. Travelling inside Unicron, [[Hot Rod]] recovers the Matrix, transforms into Rodimus Prime, and uses the Matrix to destroy Unicron.

==Full synopsis==

[[Image:Tftm1986a.jpg|right|thumb|I have a bad feeling about this.]]

In the first sequence of the film, a mechanical planet called [[Unicron]] is shown travelling through the depths of space, then approaching and destroying another metal planet which has robotic inhabitants, much like [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. During the attack, robots, vehicles, buildings, and even large chunks of rock float off the surface of the planet and spiral into the large "mouth" on Unicron.

The scene then transitions to Cybertron, and the narrator explains that it is the year 2005, and that the [[Decepticon]]s are now in control of the planet. The [[Autobot]]s are preparing to launch an assault to retake the planet from hidden bases on two of Cybertron's moons. The Autobots launch a [[Autobot shuttle|shuttle]] to pick up a final shipment of [[energon]] from [[Earth]] before they strike.

Plans for the attack are overheard by [[Laserbeak (G1)|Laserbeak]], who reports back to Megatron. The Decepticons attack the Autobot shuttle en route to Earth, wiping out its crew (including [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]], [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]], [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]] and the [[Brawn (G1)|guy in the picture up there]]). Using the Autobots' own shuttle, the Decepticons are able to get very close to the Autobots' base on Earth, [[Autobot City]], before they are detected, and begin a devastating surprise attack on the unprepared city.

[[Image:Tftm1986b.jpg|left|thumb|If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.]]

During the battle at Autobot City, both [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] and Megatron suffer mortal injuries, and a number of other characters are also killed. Eventually the Decepticons retreat, but the damage suffered by the Autobots has been severe.

''For an extensive synopsis of the battle, see [[Battle of Autobot City]].''

Shortly after the battle, Prime lies on his deathbed. He passes the reins of leadership to [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] and gives him the [[Matrix of Leadership]]. (Though Hot Rod actually touches the Matrix before Magnus does.) Prime relates a prophecy: "One day, an Autobot shall rise from our ranks, and use the power of the Matrix to light our [[darkest hour]]." He then gives the oath, "[['Til all are one]]", and [[The many deaths of Optimus Prime|dies]]. This sequence of events is observed remotely by Unicron, who appears unusually concerned by the survival of the Matrix.

The Decepticons are making their escape aboard [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]], but are too heavy for him to get them all home under his own power. After putting the matter to a fair vote, the Decepticons decide to throw their injured members off the ship to better the chance of survival for the rest. One of the most severely injured Decepticons is Megatron. Starscream tosses him out and claims leadership of the Decepticon army.

Megatron and the other adrift Decepticons then encounter Unicron in interstellar space. Unicron offers to rebuild Megatron and his minions in exchange for their service. Megatron agrees, and is [[reformatting|reformatted]] into [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]]. The other Decepticons are turned into [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]], [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]], and the [[Sweep]]s. Unicron provides them with a [[Galvatron's ship|ship]], and sends them to kill Ultra Magnus and destroy the Matrix, stating that the Matrix is the only thing which can stand in his way.

[[Image:Tftm1986c.jpg|right|thumb|Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed.]]

Galvatron first stops at Cybertron to take his revenge by killing Starscream and reclaiming leadership of the Decepticons. Almost immediately afterwards, Unicron arrives in Cybertron's vicinity and devours at least two moons{{m-}}both of the Autobots' moon bases are destroyed. Under coercion by Unicron, Galvatron finally heads to Earth to kill Ultra Magnus, but Magnus and the other surviving Autobots flee in a pair of shuttles. Eventually Galvatron manages to cause one shuttle to crash on yet another metal planet ([[Quintessa]]), and detonates the other with a volley of missiles. However, the Autobots in the second shuttle escape unnoticed by separating the front portion of their shuttle just before impact.

The Autobots in the crashed shuttle, [[Hot Rod]], [[Kup]], and the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobot]]s, find themselves separated and in a hostile environment. Hot Rod and Kup are captured by a squad of [[Allicon]]s and taken before a [[Quintesson]] [[Quintesson judge|judge]] and his court. While being held there, they learn the name and nature of Unicron from [[Kranix]], a survivor of the planet destroyed in the opening of the film, which he calls [[Lithone]]. Meanwhile, the Dinobots encounter and befriend a young, wild Autobot named [[Wheelie]] who has been living alone on Quintessa. Together, they crash the trial just as Hot Rod and Kup are fighting losing odds against the Quintessons' [[Sharkticon (G1)|Sharkticon]]s. The tide is turned, and the Autobots commandeer a [[Quintesson ship]].

[[Image:Tftm1986d.jpg|left|thumb|What an incredible smell you've discovered!]]

The other group of Autobots has landed on the planet [[Junkion (planet)|Junkion]] to make repairs, but are attacked yet again by Galvatron, who was tipped off to their survival by Unicron. During the battle, Ultra Magnus tries to open the Matrix to use its power, but is unable to do so, and instead is killed. Galvatron absconds with the Matrix, taking it away to Unicron. The remaining Autobots{{m-}}[[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]], [[Springer]], [[Arcee (G1)|Arcee]], and [[Spike Witwicky|Spike]]'s son [[Daniel Witwicky|Daniel]]{{m-}}are then ambushed by [[Junkion]]s, the eponymous natives of Junkion, who are also giant transforming robots. This battle is cut short, however, by the arrival of Hot Rod's group in their Quintesson ship. After exchanging the [[universal greeting]] they all make friends, and the Junkions restore Ultra Magnus to life. Together, the whole group travels to Cybertron to try to recover the Matrix.

Galvatron attempts to open the Matrix to use its power against Unicron, but is also unable to get it open. Unicron, not pleased with this attempted treachery, shocks Galvatron by transforming from a planet into a [[Scale|planet-sized robot]]. Unicron plucks Galvatron off his chest and swallows him, Matrix and all, and then begins attacking Cybertron itself. [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] scrambles the Decepticon forces to defend the planet, but they are ineffective against so large an enemy. Shortly the Autobots arrive from Junkion, and fly the Quintesson ship straight through Unicron's eye. This impact destroys the ship, and the Autobots fall out inside Unicron. Hot Rod, separated from the others, eventually runs into Galvatron. During their fight, Hot Rod gets his hands on the Matrix and hears Optimus's voice speak the words, "Arise, Rodimus Prime." Hot Rod grows in stature, adopts a much sterner demeanor, and quickly dispatches Galvatron by tossing him through Unicron's hull out into space. He then opens the Matrix, which fills Unicron with light and begins destroying him.

[[Image:Tftm1986e.jpg|right|thumb|Use the Force, Luke.]]

In the meantime, the other Autobots inside Unicron have located some of their comrades from the moon bases who had been presumed dead, including [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]] and Daniel's father, Spike. The Autobots, including Rodimus, escape through Unicron's remaining eye just as he begins to fall apart and explode. The scene then immediately shifts to the surface of Cybertron, where{{m-}}for unclear reasons{{m-}}the Autobots seem to be in charge again. Rodimus predicts an era of peace and prosperity, and the film closes with a shot of Unicron's severed head still floating in orbit around Cybertron.
==Significance in Transfandom==

''The Transformers: The Movie'' remains one of the most important elements of the entire Transformers brand, both within the fiction and from the perspective of the brand's popularity and "mindshare".

Fictionally, it established several story concepts that have been used repeatedly in the years since 1986, some of which{{m-}}such as Unicron and the Matrix{{m-}}are now central to the entire Transformers mythos. The movie is also the centerpiece of the most well-known Transformers continuity: the G1 animated universe. The G1 cartoon is split into "pre-movie" and "post-movie" sections which feature different characters and settings, and even somewhat different visual styles. (Most pre-movie episodes were animated by the studio [[Toei]], while most post-movie episodes were animated by [[AKOM]].)

On a practical note, it was widely available on videotape, and remained so long after the Generation 1 cartoon had gone off the air. Only a handful of series episodes were available on video, making ''The Transformers: The Movie'' the logical choice for someone looking to pick up a ''Transformers'' cartoon; this made it far more well-known among fans than any particular cartoon episode.

To an entire generation of young fans, the movie was the most visually spectacular and narratively epic ''Transformers'' experience of their entire youth. Events such as the death of Optimus Prime are widely reported to have reduced many kids to tears. It is hardly a surprise that these emotional experiences embedded themselves deeply in many fans' memories.

==Criticisms==
All this is not all to say that the movie is a "masterpiece", exactly. The film met with extremely harsh critical reviews on its release, and some of those criticisms still ring true today.

The film displays an arguably cynical attitude towards itself as [[To sell toys|a vehicle for advertising toys]], especially in the way beloved characters are killed{{m-}}sometimes gratuitously{{m-}}for sake of justifying the story's focus on a new group of toys. (Note that the poster at the top of this article features ''only'' new characters.)

Further, the two primary plot devices{{m-}}[[Unicron]] and the [[Matrix]]{{m-}}have no prior establishment in the fiction. Unicron is given no backstory or justification; he simply exists, is very dangerous, and is afraid of the Matrix, all for no adequately explained reason. The introduction of the Matrix itself is a heavy [[retcon]]. The story asks the audience to accept that this cosmically powerful artifact has been in Prime's possession all along (even though an X-ray of Optimus Prime's innards in the second season episode "[[A Prime Problem]]" show absolutely no signs of said Matrix), but has somehow never been relevant before. In fact, this lack of prior establishment is what led [[Simon Furman]] to develop the divinity backstory of Unicron and [[Primus]] in the UK comics run.

[[Image:Megatronlightsaber.jpg|right|thumb|Your powers are weak, old man!]]

The movie bears many similarities to ''[[Star Wars]]'': There are several character-parallels (Springer is a Han Solo-type and Arcee even has Princess Leia's hairdo!), the primary threat is similar (it's the Death Star... but it transforms!), and both feature a climactic battle where the young hero hears the voice of his wise mentor one last time before saving the day.

To be a bit more fair to ''The Transformers: The Movie'', however, most of these similarities are either superficial (Arcee's Leia-hair; Megatron's "lightsaber" he briefly uses in his duel against Optimus Prime) or can be seen as elements common to thousands of years worth of epic storytelling through human history, not just common to ''Star Wars''. As a simple example, the phenomenon of two charismatic leaders dealing each other mortal injuries in battle hearkens back to some versions of the "King Arthur" myth; in their final battle, [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Arthur]] and his arch-enemy [[Megatron (G1)|Sir Mordred]] deal one another lethal injuries and both apparently expire -- though Arthur according to the legend will [[The Return of Optimus Prime|return]] when [[Cybertron (planet)|England's]] need [[darkest hour|is greatest]].

Though most likely coincidental, the movie also bears many similarities to the Marvel Comics ''Fantastic Four'' story "The Galactus Trilogy":

* The presence of an enormous world-devouring cosmic entity that threatens to destroy the heroes' home planet (Galactus/Unicron).

* The presence of a single item that is the only thing that can stop said cosmic entity (Ultimate Nullifier/Matrix of Leadership).

* The presence of a herald of said cosmic entity, who ultimately betrays the entity (Silver Surfer/Galvatron).

==Trivia and controversies==

This film was one of the last professional performances by [[Orson Welles]], if not the very last. According to production materials shown at [[BotCon 2000]] by Tim Finn, the voice recording sessions for ''The Transformers: The Movie'' were done on September 10 and 11 of 1985. Welles died on October 10 of that same year. It has often been speculated that Unicron's last line ("Destiny... you cannot destroy my destiny...!") was recorded by another actor{{m-}}possibly [[Leonard Nimoy|Nimoy]]{{m-}}because it sounds different than the other lines. This speculation has been quashed by statements by Transformers voice director [[Wally Burr]].[http://cybertronchronicle.freewebspace.com/60-astrominutes/wally_burr_3.html]

The Dinobot [[Snarl (G1)|Snarl]] is mysteriously absent from almost the entire movie (maybe he was scared of getting killed off), even though the Dinobots as a group are featured prominently. It is unclear why this is the case, but one possible explanation is that copies of the script which have come into fans' hands repeatedly list the Dinobots but never make mention of Snarl by name. In fact, at one point the script refers to "the four Dinobots". Despite this, Snarl does appear in three very brief shots, although he has no lines and no action.

Also curiously absent are the 1985 Autobot cars and Mini-Vehicles, such as Inferno, Smokescreen, Cosmos, Warpath, etc. It would seem that these characters were available at the time of the movie:
* Perceptor and Blaster both debuted at the same time in the cartoon as the 1985 cars, and both play prominent roles in the movie.
* Grapple is seen ''very'' briefly during the battle for Autobot City.
* The 1985 Decepticons (Astrotrain, Dirge, etc.) appear in the film.
* Tracks, Red Alert and Smokescreen all appeared in storyboards but not the finished film.

With the exception of Starscream and possibly Shockwave, only the Autobots suffered casualties in the movie. All of the other "dead" Decepticons from the Autobot City battle were rebuilt into Galvatron's new troops, and although more Decepticons were shown taking heavy damage and suffering huge casualties while fighting Unicron, their identities and their condition are uncertain. Additionally, both Starscream and Unicron survived in the post-movie series in some form or another. Shockwave's death in the finished film is highly uncertain, although in the script it is fairly strongly implied. He does make some appearances in crowd shots in later cartoon episodes, but these may be examples of the fairly common animation errors in those episodes.

Originally, Ultra Magnus's "death sequence" on Junkion called for him to be lassoed and drawn and quartered by the Sweeps' energy beams, but this was deemed too graphic for audiences, hence the less disturbing "shot to death" sequence seen instead. There is evidence that the original sequence had been fully animated when the decision was made, however; the Sweeps still kept their solid energy lassos when they fire upon Mags, and Mags is seen visibly straining against what appears to be said lassos (edited out and replaced with laser fire) before exploding.

A number of other sequences were storyboarded but dropped, presumably without ever being animated. Most notable among these was a scene that would have shown the Autobots finally bringing down Devastator with a barrage of missiles (and the Constructicons subsequently shooting Red Alert in the back), and the Decepticons dogpiling Optimus Prime, explaining why he seems to be standing up just before his fight with Megatron.

Rumors have occasionally circulated in the fandom of additional animated footage that was dropped from the film, such as ultra-violent battle scenes. No evidence has ever surfaced to back these claims; the only known edits are those [[#Formatting and Edits|listed below]].

See also [[Misconceptions and urban legends about Transformers#The Transformers: The Movie|Urban legends about ''The Transformers: The Movie'']].

==Animation Errors==
There are a few notable animation errors in the movie:

* When the Decepticons are killing the Autobots inside the Autobot shuttle, there is one of the common Starscream/Skywarp/Thundercracker miscolors. Megatron transforms into gun mode and Starscream catches him and kills Brawn. When they cut back to the Decepticons, Starscream is in front of the Constructicons without Megatron and is firing one of his arm rifles (this probably should have been Skywarp or Thundercracker). When they cut back to the Decepticons for the third time, Starscream has Megatron again and is finishing off the rest of the Autobots.

*During the Battle at Autobot City, Starscream gets his leg caught. He shoots downward and gets away while screaming "My Foot!", but its his shin that's smoking while his foot looks fine. Later he kicks Megatron with the same foot. Shouldn't that hurt, according to him?

* When Ultra Magnus accepts the Matrix, he's seen inserting it into his chest twice, or at best readjusting its "fit". (Some fans have joked that Mags was forcing the Matrix inside him, as another sign that it had chosen Hot Rod as the new leader and rejected him.)

* Swoop's lower leg appears for a brief second during the Autobot City battle, long before the rest of him gets there.

* When Devastator forms in Autobot City, his chest plate is the same green as the rest of him. In the next shot, it's the usual purple. However, it promptly turns green again in the next shot.

* Not so much an error, but if you watch Sludge when he's haymaker'ed by Devastator, his eyes pop out of their sockets in Looney Tunes fashion.

* When [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] sends out his casette troops, [[FIBRIR|Rumble is the same color as Frenzy]].

* Sunstreaker appears with Huffer, Bluestreak and Kup when they observe Hot Rod firing on Ironhide's shuttle. Sunstreaker later appears as Optimus Prime's co-pilot when they arrive with the Dinobots, and is seen disembarking the shuttle along with Optimus Prime and Hound.

* Hot Rod has at least two totally different transformation schemes during the course of the film.

* When Hot Rod tells the Junkions the universal greeting, the Autobot insignia on his chest is coloured black.

* Even after the [[Battle of Autobot City]], characters who are supposedly dead continue to appear in crowd shots and battles. Shrapnel's role in the fight on [[Junk]] is the most noticable, but Thundercracker and Skywarp can be seen at both Starscream's coronation and flying into Unicron's mouth in the [[RBFATE]].

* When the inside of Unicron is shown after he devours Lithone, the "blinking energy" effect of Unicron's innards was apparently achieved by recycling backgrounds from other animated TV shows or movies. If you go through the scene frame by frame, you will see what appear to be several images of post-apocalyptic buildings inside Unicron.

* There are a couple frames where you can see the inside of one of the Lithonian ships being devoured by Unicron. The pilot of the ship appears to be Kranix, even though he apparently screams out Kranix's name, and Kranix appears later in the Quintesson prison.

* When Optimus Prime takes the Matrix out of his chest to give to Ultra Magnus, there is another Matrix beneath it in his chest. (On which note, see also ''[[Matrix_of_Leadership#Universe|Matrix of Leadership, Universe comic]].'')

* Not technically an error, but definitely an animator's easter egg; in the Quintesson jail cell, robot debris ''strongly'' resembling the RX-178 MK II and the MSZ-006 mobile suits from 1985's ''Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam'', can be seen.

* In the battle for Autobot City, when Prime drives up behind the Decepticons, Blitzwing turns his head and its color changes to purple for a split second. However, when he turns it back its tan again.

*In the scene where Blaster ejects his tapes, He first ejects what looks like Eject. He stays blue up until he gets to the edge of the screen. He then turns black like Rewind. Then Blaster ejects a another blue cassette, which after about a second, turns black. This one gets through half his transformation colored black, then turns blue for a split second then turns black again. Then, when the cassettes are fighting each other, Eject runs in from the left and jumps over Perceptor. And then he runs in from the left ''again'' to shoot Ravage. Suddenly [[Brawl (Movie)|Brawl/Devastator]] doesn't look so bad does he?

== Interesting Observations ==

* Why didn't anyone notice Unicron until he was within devouring distance of Cybertron's moons?

* Despite running out of energon goodies on Quintessa, Hot Rod has at least one to offer to the Junkions. Maybe he got some on the ship. It's also possible that, when he told the Allicons "No more," he meant that he wasn't going to ''feed'' them anymore energon goodies, not that he didn't ''have'' anymore.

* So Ultra Magnus just happens to have a ready-made Matrix chamber installed in his chest cavity? Is this standard issue for all Autobots?

* Before Unicron's arrival, what were the Autobots on Moonbase 2 planning on doing with a bomb powerful enough to destroy the entire moon?

* Astrotrain tells his fellow Decepticons to "jettison some weight" while flying through space, where there is no gravity.

==Formatting and Edits==
[[Image:Tftm widescreenesque.jpg|thumb|300px|The widescreen picture (left) cuts the top and bottom off the fullscreen picture (right).]]
Although it was billed in some advertisements before its theatrical release as being "widescreen", the movie was in fact animated in a 4:3 (fullscreen) aspect ratio. For its theatrical screenings, the film was matted down in the projector by the projectionist to a 16:9 aspect ratio (widescreen), chopping the top and bottom off the picture, but all video transfers of the movie were done without mattes, meaning that there was actually more picture visible in the fullscreen video and DVD releases than there would have been in theaters. Across 2006 and 2007, new editions of the DVD of the film were released by Sony BMG and [[Metrodome]] which applied the mattes in order to replicate the original theatrical presentation of the film for the first time in home entertainment. Some fans, however, didn't realize that the film wasn't actually ''animated'' in widescreen, and, hearing that the DVD was to be in widescreen, expected to see the fullscreen image with additional footage at the sides, causing them to complain that the top and bottom were cut off, thereby totally missing the point.

Several English-language versions of the film exist, with the following differences in content from the American theatrical run:

* In some versions (notably the European version) the opening credits are replaced with a scrolling text ("''Star Wars'' style") which provides backstory.

* In some versions (notably the European version) the film ends with a narrator reassuring the audience that Optimus Prime will return.

* Instances of swearing in the film (there are two) were edited out; sometimes one, sometimes both. Those instances are: Spike yelling, "Oh shit, what are we gonna do now?" after the self-destructing Moon Base 2 fails to scratch Unicron, and Ultra Magnus growling, "Open, damn it, open!" while trying to open the Matrix to fend off Galvatron and the Sweeps on Junkion. The United Kingdom cinema version had the swearing included but, when it was released on VHS in the United Kingdom, Spike's line was cut. However it has been restored on all United Kingdom DVD releases.

*Instead of DEG, the Rank Film "gong man" appears before the film, as Rank were the United Kingdom distributors.

==International versions==

In Hungary, the movie has two dubs. One of them is ancient and unprofessional, the other more recent and more professional. Fans for hard wear counted a total of five actors in the original version (four men for random characters, while a female actress grants her voice to Arcee, Daniel, and Wheelie). Lip-sinc is practically non-existent, the actors continue talking even when another character is moving its lips, certain lines are missing (most notably Megatron's "Die, Autobots!" shout), Grimlock rhymes after meeting Wheelie instead of the latter, and Cliffjumper and Springer share the same name. While Blaster, for instance, changes his voice three times during one scene. Even so, this first version remains popular, and only those fans seem to hate it who have only recently been introduced to it. As for why the word Decepticon was translated to "Toad", well, that remains a mystery to this day.

The second and more disliked one has a reputation among the fans for including more profanities than the original version of the film. Although Spike's "Oh, shit!" line was cut, Ironhide, Galvatron and the Dinobots say terms akin to "assholes", "jerk", "stupid", "rotten", and "ass-wipes" (this one even twice, when referring to the Decepticons). Quite interesting, seeing as the dubs produced in that era have been known for freeing the movies of their swear words. These dubs are also infamous for using untranslated or incorrectly translated names, and random voice actors for random characters with random voice-pacing. These names include Unicornis (Unicron), Mega-robot (Devastator), Constructors (Constructicons), Deceptors (Decepticons), Jettison (Astrotrain, probably derived and mis-interpreted from the line "Jettison some weight."), Astro (again, Astrotrain), and Eject (this refers to no one, it was mistranslated from Soundwave's "Eject" call). The switching of voices is also common in this version. An interesting blooper occurs during the attack on the Autobot shuttle: Ironhide speaks his final words in Starscream's voice ("Please, have mercy!"), and curiously the translation of Megatron's "Such heroic nonsense" line corresponds with this sudden change of personality, as he says to (supposedly) Starscream "Death to all traitors" before blasting him... in reality Ironhide. Now ''this'' is a foreshadowing of later events.
The DVD case has G.I. Joe pictures printed on it, as well as on the DVD itself. Spiffy. It's also worth noting that Bumblebee in the 2007 movie has the same voice he had in the second dub of ''The Transformers: The Movie''. Probably a coincidence, since that guy supplied half of the voices for the cast back then. Both of these versions include the scrolling text and other European edits, the more recent one even has the "gong man".

Also in Germany, there are two dubs. The first one was made in 1994 for airing on TV (the movie was never shown in German theaters) as a pilot for the broadcasting of the G2 series. Even though the dub was made only three years after the G1 dub was made, only a few of the German voice actors returned. For example, the voice of Optimus Prime was dubbed by [[Thomas Rau]], who was the voice of Rodimus Prime, Blaster and Scourge on the original show. This version of the movie was only shown twice, on its premiere and one day later as a rerun, and was never released on VHS. In 2003, a new dub was made for the movie's DVD release.

German fans are still waiting for a release of the original dub, which features rather brutal translations, e.g.: ''One shall stand, one shall fall'' was translated as ''One shall live, one shall die,'' while [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]]'s line ''I'll rip out your optics'' was translated as ''I'm going to blow your lights out.''

The Movie was released in Brazilian theaters almost simultaneously to the launch of the series on television. It was later released on home video on the late '80s, but on a very small scale, which made it very hard to find in video stores. The movie was aired on television just once and received a new dub for this. [[Brazilian dubs for the Movie|Which dubbing is the best]] is a regular debate topic among Brazilian fans.

For French-speaking audiences, who had thus far been given two separate dubs of the TV series (one done in France and one done in Quebec, a very common occurrence), a single dub was made for all French releases of the film. This release used a brand-new voice actor team rather than using either dub team from the series. Whereas the old dubs used the French names from the toy packages, the movie used all of the characters' English names. Two characters were given gender changes for this dub; Starscream and Shrapnel both become females. One notable change to the dialog occurs when Starscream asks "Megatron? Is that you?" Galvatron's original answer, "Here's a hint!", is now much more direct: "Yes, but stronger than before!"

In Poland, the movie was never professionally dubbed. In the only official (and cult classic) release on VHS in 1992, all the dialogue was read by a single voice-over actor, while the original sound was left intact and could be heard in the background. To this day, that characteristic form of "narrating" is a very popular solution in Poland when it comes to translating movies for TV or DVDs. Thanks to this method, you can both understand the story and hear all the original voices. In case of ''The Transformers: The Movie'' it also forced translators to leave (almost) all the original names intact. (Yay!)

The Japanese dub is notable for adding a lot of lines and voice effects. Whereas the shuttle attack scene didn't have much talking during combat in the English version, the Japanese dub adds numerous lines to many characters on both sides of the fight. Likewise, Prime's fight with Megatron has numerous grunts added in.

==Commercial Releases==

* The movie was originally released in North America on home video in 1987 by Family Home Entertainment, minus Spike's swear. Not long after, it was releasd in the UK by Video Gems. This version featured the opening text crawl and closing narration inherent to the UK version of the film. In Australia, the film was releaed on video by RCA/Columbia Pictures/Hoyts. In Japan, Hillcrane released a Laserdisc version alongside a VHS copy.

*The movie was realeased spottily in the 90s, beginning with a budget VHS by Avid Home Entertainment in 1991. Malofilm released a VHS in Canada in 1995, notable for being the first home entertainment version to include Spike's swear. In 1998, Japanese company Pioneer produced another pair of Laserdisc and VHS releases. In 1999, things kicked off when American company [[Kid Rhino]] secured the Transformers license and released the film on VHS once again.

*The 21st century's flirtation with ''The Transformers: The Movie'' started with a UK budget VHS release of that country's version by [[Maverick Entertainment]]. A Japanese company called CatCo followed this up with a VideoCD, and Malofilm{{m-}}now Seville{{m-}}were the first to release a DVD version of the film, though it was just a dump of their VHS version.

*In November 2000, ''The Transformers: The Movie'' got its first, full professional DVD release from Kid Rhino. This edition, labelled a "Special Collector's Edition", is the first to feature remastered video and audio, and several special features, including storyboards and an interview with [[Vince DiCola]]. Rhino concurrently released this version on VHS, sans extras.

*In 2001 in the UK, Maverick Entertainment released their own much-delayed DVD version of the film. It was the UK version of the film, but included Spike's swear. However, the release was burdened by badly interlaced video, though notably included the [[StarTV]] dub version of the ''[[The Headmasters (cartoon)|Headmasters]]'' episode "[[Four Warriors Come out of the Sky]]" as an extra. This version (including the ''Headmasters'' episode) was simultaneously released on VHS.

*The movie was released on DVD in Australia in 2003 by [[Madman Entertainment]], using the same video as the Maverick version, but distinguished by some nifty new cover art by [[Don Figueroa]], and special features not seen on other editions, such as [[The Touch]] music video and 80s TV spots.

[[Image:Tftm_uk_covers.jpg|right|thumb|The UK poster art (left) has been the most common DVD and VHS cover in its home country, but the Ultimate Edition featured new art by Andy Wildman (right).]]

*After acquiring the license to release ''Transformers'' DVDs in the UK, [[Metrodome]] focused on completing their run of series box sets before turning their attention to the movie properly, releasing only a cheap budget DVD of the UK version through Prism Leisure with no extras, and a UMD of the same version.

*In 2005, Metrodome released "Transformers: The Movie - Reconstructed", a new version of the film designed to expose as much of the animated picture as possible. This, however, only resulted in exposing the rough, unfinished edges of the animation, and an overly pale remaster was compounded by excessive interlacing due to an unnecessary NTSC to PAL transfer. This, coupled with a 5.1 remix from [[Magno Sound]], featuring the same extra sound effects that they added to Rhino's season box sets, made this release both controversial and disappointing to many. This was the first time that the US version of the movie was released in the UK, and the first to feature the US poster art as a cover (although a Silverscreen store exclusive version of the disc included a reversible cover with the UK poster art as well). Extras include trailers, TV spots, the character biographies from the Madman release, and a subtitled version of "[[Four Warriors Come out of the Sky]]".

{{-}}

[[Image:Tftm_sony_covers.jpg|right|thumb|Sony's covers, by Don Figueroa.]]

*For the movie's 20th anniversary in 2006, new license holder [[Sony]] BMG released a two-disc special edition of the film, featuring both a high-quality widescreen remaster and the original fullscreen version, audio commentaries from crew and fans, several new featurettes interviewing those involved in the movie's production, storyboards, tv spots, American and Japanese commercials and more. Most notably, this version included the first Western release of "[[Scramble City]]", albeit silent and unsubtitled, featuring only audio commentary. This release featured two covers by Don Figueroa: one is of the '84-'85 cast that appear in the movie, and one is of the movie's new characters, available either as a lenticular hologram that switches between the two, or as a reversible sleeve with the images printed on either side.

{{-}}

[[Image:Tftm_madman_covers.jpg|right|thumb|Madman's 2003 DVD cover (left), and their 2007 Special Edition cover (right).]]

*Delayed a bit to coincide with the hype for the 2007 [[Transformers (2007)|live-action movie]], Metrodome also released a two-disc "Ultimate Edition" with a different widescreen master. Like "Reconstructed", this version used the US edition of the film, but this time, the UK version was also included, in fullscreen, on the second disc. Extras include TV spots, commercials, the Madman biographies, storyboards, commentary, Scramble City (with audio and subtitles), featurettes with [[Flint Dille]] and [[Peter Cullen]], and more. The double-disc edition was sold in a steel case featuring new art by [[Andrew Wildman]], with the UK poster art adorning the standard case inside. Various store exclusives were available, including postcards from Play.Com, a reversible cover with the US poster art from HMV, art cards from Virgin Megastore and posters from Woolworths and Toys R Us. It was also available in an extra-less single-disc version. This version was premiered at the Mid Ulster Film Festival in Ireland which was the only cinema showing of the remastered version of the film to date.

*The film was released in Full HD 1080p on Blu-ray in the UK in October 2007. The Blu-ray is not region-locked, so it will play anywhere in the world. It features a 2.0 soundtrack, 5.1 Dolby Digital track, and a full bitrate DTS 5.1 track. The master used was the same used by Sony for their US DVD. The picture is quite stunning and the sound very good. Sadly, there are no extras on the DVD. The version of the film on the Blu-ray is the US one, complete with swear word.

*Madman produced their two-disc special edition through some collaboration with Metrodome, and consequently it features much of the same content, with additional extras taking the form of The Touch music video and a bonus episode of ''[[Beast Wars (cartoon)|Beast Wars]]''. This release again features cover artwork by Don Figueroa, specifically the cover of [[IDW]]'s ''[[Transformers: The Animated Movie]]'' adaptation.

==Comic Adaptations==
*[[Transformers: The Movie (Marvel Comics)|A comic adaptation of the movie]] was published by [[Marvel Comics]] in 1986, concurrently with the movie's theater run. It was based off a non-finalized version of the script, and differs in many details from the final film. Additionally, most of the major character models (and possibly their unedited original character write-ups) appear in Issue #4 of the ''[[Transformers Universe (Marvel Comics)|Transformers Universe]]'' series.

*A four-part adaptation was released in 2006/2007 by [[IDW Publishing]], as part of the film's 20th anniversary celebration. It was titled ''[[Transformers: The Animated Movie]]'' to differentiate it from the [[Michael Bay]] [[Transformers (2007)|live-action film]]. Unlike its predecessor, it adheres rigidly to the script and plot of the finished movie.

==Promotions==
* The movie was advertised on related 1986 toy packages via the [[Decipher the Decepticon]] Sweepstakes, which included a pack-in poster and contest.
* The movie was heavily advertised directly by TV commercials, and tail-end segments on Transformer toy [[commercial]]s. Portions of its story were also retold in altered fashion by animation segments of commercials for the movie character toys, such as a spot showing Springer doing battle with Wreck-Gar.

==Soundtrack==
Released on Scotti Bros. Records, the soundtrack to the movie was made available in both vinyl LP (long-playing) record form and audio cassette. At an undetermined point in the 90's, it was released on CD as well (there are no new markings on the CD booklet or outer case to indicate when the CD was released).

*1. The Touch - [[Stan Bush]]
*2. Instruments Of Destruction - [[N.R.G.]]
*3. Death Of Optimus Prime - [[Vince DiCola]]
*4. Dare - Stan Bush
*5. Nothin's Gonna Stand In Our Way - [[Spectre General]]
*6. The Transformers (Theme) - [[Lion]]
*7. Escape - Vince DiCola
*8. Hunger - Spectre General
*9. Autobot/Decepticon Battle - Vince DiCola
*10. Dare To Be Stupid - [["Weird Al" Yankovic]]

In 1997, the newly-formed [[3H]] produced as a [[BotCon 1997]] [[exclusive]] a double-CD set called ''[['Til All Are One (CD)|'Til All Are One]]''. The second disc contains the all of the background score (by Vince DiCola) that was not on the original soundtrack, including several "alternate" pieces for scenes that used songs from the original soundtrack, plus "[[Legacy]]", the audition piece that got Vince the job. Other albums released by 3H which include music from the movie are ''BotCon 97: The Concert'', ''The Protoform Sessions'', ''Artistic Transformations'', and ''Lighting Their Darkest Hour: The Complete Music Score''. All of these 3H albums are long since sold out.

On May 29, 2007, Legacy Recordings re-released the soundtrack in a 20th Anniversary Edition containing the above tracks from the original 1986 release plus these additional tracks:

*11. Unicron Medley - Vince DiCola
*12. Moon Base 2 - Shuttle Launch - Vince DiCola
*13. Megatron Must Be Stopped (Parts 1 and 2) - Vince DiCola
*14. The Transformers Theme (Alternate) - Stan Bush and Vince DiCola

==In the comic continuity==

The [[Generation 1 (Marvel Comics)|Marvel UK comic]] made extensive use of the Movie as the basis for a series of stories involving the Transformers in the future. However there are several differences between the events seen on screen and those referenced in the comic:

*The comic always dates the move to 2006, following the date given in a treatment that was all [[Simon Furman]] had when he wrote [[Target: 2006]].
*In Target: 2006, [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]] states that he was previously "Life Spark".
*The Matrix is always called the "Creation Matrix" in the comic, a name that predates the "Matrix of Leadership" but which is now used for the same physical object.
