During the long dormancy of [[Primus]] and [[Unicron]] at the beginning of time, Vector Prime retreated from the march of history to prepare for when his skills would once again be called upon. From this isolation he watched the greatest victories and defeats of the Transformers race across the various timelines, intervening only when his hand was needed to preserve the balance of time. (For example, Vector Prime helped mend [[Generation 1]] [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] and repair the timestorm that [[Predacon (BW)|Predacon]] [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]] had unleashed in the [[Beast Wars]].) However, the awakening of Primus and Unicron returned Vector Prime to active service, following the wake of Unicron across the multiverse to prevent or restore what damage the Dark God had inflicted with its contaminating presence.

After the [[Powerlinx Battles]], Primus attempted to lock Unicron's essence away in the center of a newborn sun, but this plan backfired and the sun collapsed into a black hole, also known as the [[Unicron Singularity]]. This threatened the multiverse itself, so Vector Prime was called back to [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] to assist the Autobots in locating artifacts which would destroy the black hole.

During the Autobots' search, Vector Prime would routinely confer with [[Alpha Trion (G1)|Alpha Trion]] on their progress. During one such visit, [[Ramjet (Universe)|Ramjet]] and [[Nemesis Prime (Universe)|Nemesis Prime]], followers of Unicron, attacked them, heavily damaging Alpha Trion and destroying [[Vector Sigma]]. It was Ramjet's plan that Nemesis Prime would unleash his [[Dead Matrix]] to destroy their Creator, and so the two travelled to the chamber deep within Cybertron that housed Primus' essence. Vector Prime and [[Sentinel Maximus]] met and battled them there. Vector Prime and Ramjet's fight left the chamber and ended ultimately high above Cybertron. Though Vector Prime was able to defeat Ramjet and seal him away in another dimension, this act weakened him considerably. The guardian of space and time returned to the Autobots on [[Earth]] and left Cybertron in the care of [[Over-Run (Armada)|Over-Run]], a Mini-Con who had taken the reins of what remained of Vector Sigma.

When Vector Prime discovered that [[Unicron]]'s destruction had resulted in a [[Unicron_Singularity|black hole]] that threatened existence itself, his role as Guardian of Time and Space compelled him to set forth to fix it using the Omega Lock and the four Cyber Planet Keys, forged from the spark of Primus himself. Of course, the fact that these ancient artifacts were lost several million years ago presented certain problems. As a result, he returned to Cyberton in an attempt to enlist some help, and encountered the charismatic [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron]], who tricked Vector Prime into handing over the Planet Map to the [[Decepticons]]. Immediately thereafter, Vector Prime realized the Decepticons were actually kind of jerks, and joined the Autobots. Vector Prime was vital to the Autobot cause, as he could create small-scale [[Space Bridge|Space Bridges]] with his sword, as well as force fields with the aid of his Universal Cyber Key. On one occasion, when Megatron killed Coby, Bud, and Lori, Vector Prime turned back time to save them, although this caused him great strain. Later, he would find the Omega Lock in the spaceship [[Atlantis]], and get it back.

In a heroic sacrifice, Vector Prime overloaded his time-travel powers to send the stranded Autobots back to a point before they arrived on [[Gigantion]]. Sadly, this incredible strain spelled the end of his physical existence, and he became One With Time Itself. He would not be seen again, but, from Beyond Time, he gave his sword to [[Optimus_Prime_(Armada)|Optimus Prime]] in Prime's final battle with [[Megatron (Armada)|Galvatron]].

Because of his mastery of time and space it is impossible to determine when exactly he visited -- or perhaps merely communicated with -- our universe, but it may have been during the course of events in the ''Cybertron'' animated series, as he answers questions regarding those events and other characters who he had not met before the series began. Alternatively, he may have answered the questions after the conclusion of the series from within the Allspark, which is known to be a dimensional nexus of sorts.

Inferno first appeared in the episode "Dinobot Island Part 1".

His most prominent appearance came in "Auto-Berserk" alongside Red Alert. After a battle with the Decepticons ended with Red Alert being damaged, the Autobot became paranoid that Inferno and the others were out to get him. Red Alert deserted and teamed up with Starscream (who had been kicked out of the Decepticons after a disagreement with Megatron) to steal an Autobot device called the Nevagator. After being damaged again, Red Alert realized what he had done and destroyed the Nevagator, setting fire to the cavern they were in - and a guilty Inferno rushed into the fire to save Red Alert's life.

In the episode "Prime Target" the big game hunter Lord Chumley captured a secret Soviet jet, leading to panic of possibly war. Chumley then set his sights on the ultimate trophy, the head of Optimus Prime. In order to lure Optimus in Chumley captured the Autobots Tracks, Bumblebee, Jazz, Beachcomber, Blaster and Inferno. Windcharger and Huffer were able to avoid being trapped. When Cosmos learned of the location Chumley was keeping the captured Autobots Optimus Prime accepted Chumley's challenge to meet him alone. Although interrupted by the Decepticons Astrotrain and Blitzwing who attempted to ally with Chumley, Optimus defeated the big game hunter and freed the Autobots. Chumley and the stolen jet were given over the Soviets by the Autobots as punishment for his actions.

In "The Search for Alpha Trion", when Optimus Prime returned to Cybertron alone to save Elita One, Ironhide leads Inferno and Powerglide after him. On Cybertron the Autobots are briefly reunited with Chromia, Moonracer and Firestar, defeat the Decepticons and save Elita.

===Marvel Comics continuity===
Inferno also appeared in the Marvel Transformers comic, acting in a capacity similar to his animated self, although he had few notable appearances. In the U.K. "Time Wars" storyline he appeared aiding the Wreckers against Galvatron, but was knocked out of the battle when the insane future Decepticon crushed his leg. He was one of the few survivors of the fight and later formed the Survivors along with other survivors of the Wreckers and Decepticon Mayhem Attack Squad. In the US storyline after many battles against the Decepticons, Inferno was deactivated by the Underbase powered Starscream. He was later reactivated by Grimlock who brought him back to life with an infusion of Nucleon. Inferno went on to fight against Unicron, but was later killed again by Bludgeon's ambush (he was not seen being killed, but his wreckage is visible among that of the victims of the ambush). He was resurrected by the coming of Optimus Prime and the Last Autobot, allowing them to defeat the Decepticons.

His luck ran true to form in the Transformers: Generation 2 comic, however. As he battled the forces of Jhiaxus, he saw his friend Smokescreen gunned down. In a rage, he killed all of them - only to be ambushed by more of them. Inferno dove for cover, but never made it, as the building collapsed on top of him.

The Inferno of the post-The Transformers: The Movie universe appeared in the Marvel U.K. comics, most prominently in the "Legacy of Unicron" arc, where his habit of dying spectacularly continued. He and Smokescreen were dispatched to escort Wreck-Gar back to the Junk. There, they discovered it had been taken over by the decapitated head of Unicron. The two escaped to warn Rodimus Prime, leaving Wreck-Gar behind to free his people, with Inferno being badly injured by the mind-controlled bounty hunter Death's Head. The two arrived on Cybertron - only to discover that Unicron's puppets Cyclonus and Scourge had launched an all-out Decepticon assault. The Decepticons badly damaged the shuttle, and Smokescreen refused to leave his injured friend. Inferno had other ideas and bodily threw him through the windshield to safety. Observing how he had always wanted to go out in a blaze of glory, Inferno crashed the shuttle into a massive group of Decepticons, taking them out but with him dying alongside it.

Inferno appeared in Dreamwave Productions' Generation One Transformers comics. He first appeared in the second War Within series as part of Grimlock's Lightning Strike Coalition.

WE'VE Inc. is a Japanese liscencing company which has been in charge of bringing Transformers to Japan since the Beast Era. Along with liscencing Beast Wars for Japanese broadcasting, they've also produced Beast Wars II, Beast Wars Neo, Car Robots and all three series forming the Unicron Trilogy. Aside from Transformers, they have also liscenced shows like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Sesame Street and X-Men for broadcasting in Japan.
