The '''Transformers''' are a species of [[wikipedia:sentience|sentient]] robots (mostly) originating from the planet [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. Their stories have been chronicled across many different [[Continuity|Continuities]] in the [[Multiverse]].

Though "Transformer" is the most common term for them there are others, mainly "'''Cybertron'''" as a reference to ''any'' being whose origin traces back to the planet in question (the adjective form being "'''Cybertronian'''").

The name Transformer stems from the species' generally-shared ability to [[Transformation|"transform,"]] to change from a robotic primary mode (usually, but not always, humanoid) into an alternate form, generally vehicles, weapons, machinery, or animals. In some continuities this ability to transform is innate to all members of the species, in others it was a wartime innovation that was adopted by most, but not all, Cybertronians.

==Origin==

The origin of the Transformers species differs according to continuity as well. The most prominent are:

*[[Atechnogenesis]] - Spontanious evolution from naturally occuring gears and pullies. This was the origin given in the first Marvel Comic and then promptly (and thankfully) ignored.

*[[Quintesson|Quintesson made]] - Created as slaves and merchandise by the Quintessons. This was the origin given in the original Generation 1 cartoon.

*[[Primus|Primus created]] - Created by the god-like "Lord of the Light" Primus to carry on his battle with the "dark god" [[Unicron]]. This origin sprang from [[Simon Furman]]'s UK comics and then carried back to the US Marvel books. It is also the origin that has been embraced and adopted by pretty much every Transformers work/continuity since then.

Traditionally, Transformers are living, sentient, emotional, and fully-mechanical beings. Many continuities portray Transformer "life" as being granted by a soul-like [[spark]] residing within their mechanical frames.

The [[Generation 2]] comic books established that Transformers possess both "genetic material" (useful when [[Reproduction|"budding"]]) and a distinct cellular structure, assumably both of a somehow mechanical nature.

By the [[Beast Era]] of the [[Generation 1]] [[continuity family]] synthetic flesh had become increasingly incorporated into their construction, often to aid in disguise or survival on worlds inhabited by organic lifeforms. (A version of this technology had been introduced earlier with [[Pretender]] Transformers, though in that instance the synthetic flesh was a removable outer "shell").

In the era of ''[[Beast Machines]]'', events lead to true organics being infused into Transformers biology down to the cellular level, making them "[[technorganic]]" with an increased range of powers resulting. (The "[[ParasiTech]]" techonolgy introduced in the Generation-1-based [[Kiss-Player]] series seems to have an organic component to it as well.)

===Size===

Transformers are ''generally'' large in comparison to Earth lifeforms, (two or three times the height of a human seems to be about average, though depictions vary wildly even for the same character), but a Transformer can be much, much smaller or much, much larger. There are some small enough to fit in a human's palm (see [[Browning]] and the [[Real Gear Robots]]). While the [[Micromaster]]s and [[Mini-Con]]s are two groups whose size range is within normal human standards at a time when most Transformers are larger. Human-sized appears to be the norm for Transformers altogether in the Beast Era.

The upper range of size can be a good deal larger, if you include planet-formers like [[Unicron]] and [[Primus]] or even the colossal city-bots [[Metroplex (G1)|Metroplex]] or [[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress Maximus]] (the latter's gigantism depending on the continuity). In the ''[[Cybertron (franchise)|Cybertron]]'' series, the planet [[Gigantion]] is populated by both extremes: robots who tower over "normal"-sized Transformers, aided by their tiny Mini-Con partners.

===Variance in form===

While many Transformers possess a "humanoid" form with two arms, two legs and a head atop their torso, it is not uncommon at all for there to be extensive variations. Some Transformers do not have a "humanoid" mode at all, rather their "primary" form is that of an animal or vehicle. [[Generation 1]]'s [[Ravage]], [[Grand Slam]] and [[Raindance]], for example, or the ''Beast Wars'' [[Mutant (BW)|Mutants]].

Some have unconventional limbs, their hands (or whole arm) replaced with tools, claws, weapons, or some other form of manipulator (like a beast-mode's head!). Some Transformers' lower bodies feature digitigrade legs, or wheels/treads instead of feet, or no discernible separate legs at all. Some even have more (or less!) than the normal number of limbs altogether. This design style became much more common in the Beast Era (''Beast Wars'' [[Quickstrike (BW)|Quickstrike]] and ''Beast Machines'' [[Thrust]], for example), and is also common among the Mini-Cons, but Generation 1 is not without its examples (like [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]], [[Scorponok (G1)|Scorponok]], and [[Octus]]).

Transformers' faces also run the gamut of design, from looking like a metal human in a helmet, to faces that can only be described as robotic (again, like Generation 1 Shockwave, whose face consists of little more than a single glowing eye) or animalistic (again, the Beast Era). The Mini-Cons are also notable for more commonly having non-humanoid faces.

The existence and appearance of [[Female Transformers]] in most continuities seem to suggest a level of "sexual" dimorphism to the species as well (the term sexual is used in a gender-based, rather than physical sense, see [[Reproduction]] for that whole kettle of robo-fish). In almost all cases female Transformers are portrayed as more graceful of form and more rounded and curved in general, often with a more than passing resemblance to an attractive metal human female wearing armor and kibble. There are rare exceptions to this rule (notably [[Strika]] and [[Discharge]], though the latter is said to be wearing armor that obscures her true appearance.)

Unlike humans who need air and water as well as food, generally the Transformer's only major biological need to assure their continued functioning is fuel (though again, even this can vary depending on the fiction). [[Energon]] is the most common and preferred form of Transformer fuel, but other alternatives may be substituted if it is unavailable. By the Beast Era, many could ingest organic substances to supplement their fuel needs.

===New bodies===

It is not uncommon at all for a single Transformer to change body form many times across their life-span. The ease of which they can do so depends on the continuity's technology level. In some, changing bodies requires an extensive full-body rebuild and tends to be resource draining and even dangerous. Sometimes, however, all it takes it to transplant their brain or personality program into a compatible new body. Other times, the existing body itself will be "reformatted" on the spot using a scan of a local compatible alt-mode (this is most prevalent during the [[Unicron Trilogy]]).

While not entirely 'new bodies' themselves, the [[Transmetal]] bodies - caused by exposure to a [[Transwarp]] quantum surge - somehow 'mutated' the bodies of Transformers in the Beast Era. How this was done on-the-fly with no harm to the Transformer is unknown.

First Lieutenant '''Jazz''' is one happy-go-lucky Autobot. Jazz was part of Optimus Prime's unit, summoned to Earth by [[Bumblebee (Movie)|Bumblebee]] after the latter Autobot came to be in the possession of [[Samuel James Witwicky|Sam Witwicky]]. After his [[protoform]] crashed through a baseball stadium, he investigated a nearby car dealership and chose a Pontiac Solstice hardtop as his vehicle mode. Linking up with his fellow Autobots in a deserted alley Jazz greeted Sam and [[Mikaela Banes]] as "little bitches", stating that Earth seems to be a cool place to hang out. He casually sat on the hood of another car while Optimus Prime explained to Sam their mission to find the [[All Spark]] and how his [[Archibald Amundsen Witwicky|grandfather's]] glasses were the key to its location.

Soon after, as Sam looked for his grandfather's glasses, the Autobots attempted to assist by clumsily destroying the yard where they went. When it came to hide from [[Ronald Witwicky|Sam's]] [[Judy Witwicky|parents]], Jazz had the easiest time blending into the shadows due to his small stature.

When Sam and Mikaela were captured by [[Sector Seven]], the Autobots mounted a rescue that saw Optimus Prime tearing the roof off [[Reggie Simmons|Agent Simmons']] vehicle. When the agents attempted to resist, Jazz used a magnet to relieve the humans of their weapons. After Bumblebee was captured by Sector Seven during the retreat, Jazz expressed his desire to rescue him, but was overruled by Optimus Prime, who didn't believe it possible to accomplish this without harming the humans, and so they should let them go.

The next day, after Optimus used his navigation scanner on Archibald Witwicky's glasses, Jazz again commented that they could not leave Bumblebee to die at the hands of Sector Seven, to become a human experiment. Optimus replied that Bumblebee would die in vain if they did not find the All Spark, and when Ironhide asked if the primative and cruel humans deserved to be saved, Optimus countered if the Transformers were so different in the past. Going onto explain what he saw in the humans, how if it came to it, he would sacrifice himself to destroy the All Spark - the humans should not pay for Cybertron's mistakes. Inspired by his words, Jazz and the other Autobots rolled out, filled with determination.

On the way to [[Hoover Dam]], the Autobots encountered Bumblebee leading a column of Sector Seven assault vehicles. Jazz and Optimus applied brakes and did a hard u-turn to join the formation.

Entering [[Mission City]], the [[William Lennox|human]] [[Robert Epps|soldiers]] tried to call for air support from their own forces, only to be attacked by [[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream]] disguised as a human F-22 fighter. Jazz, oddly, sat in vehicle mode after the explosion which crippled Bumblebee, destroying his legs. When [[Brawl (Movie)|Devastator]] began shelling the battle site, Jazz sped to the tank in vehicle mode, then transformed and hopped on top of the turret to distract the Decepticon from the humans. As Devastator also transformed, Jazz managed to wreck his left side rocket launcher pod before being tossed off.

Jazz then attacked [[Megatron (Movie)|Megatron]] when he appeared on the scene, but all he got for his trouble was being blasted by the Decepticon's fusion cannon. As Ironhide and Ratchet escored Sam and the All Spark to safety, Jazz attempted to buy them some time by taking on Megatron by himself but was completely overmatched. The Decepticon leader tossed him through the air, the landed upon him with the crushing grip of his talons. Valiantly, Jazz fought on to the bitter end as Megatron tore him in two.

In the aftermath of Megatron's defeat, Ironhide somberly handed Optimus Prime Jazz's remains as Ratchet reported that he could not save their comrade. {{Storylink|Transformers (2007)}}

The concept of The Allspark has evolved and coalesced over the course of almost all Transformer fiction since the line began. The specific concepts that have evolved into "The Allspark" are traced below:

===Generation 1 Cartoon===

The Autobot [[Matrix of Leadership]] is a powerful, mysterious, and ancient vessel that contains the wisdom of all past Autobot leaders.

===Marvel Comic===

The Autobot [[Creation Matrix]] is a powerful and ancient vessel that contains the essence of the Transformers God [[Primus]]. All Transformers lifeforces are said to be fragments of Primus' own.

===Beast Wars===

Transformer life force is first described as a [[spark]]. This spark is said to come from the Matrix when a Transformer is born and return to it upon his death. The exact nature of what the Matrix here is not established but wait for it...

===Beast Machines===

What was known as "the Matrix" in Beast Wars is first refered to as "the Allspark." It is defined as the dimension from which all Transformer sparks that exist, have existed, or ever will exist originate, existing as a collective whole.

When a Transformer is "born," a single spark departs the Allspark and suffuses itself into the new Transformer body, giving it true life and soul. When the Transformer then reaches the end of its life, the spark departs its body and returns to the Allspark; all the knowledge that the Transformer acquired and all of its life experiences are contained with the spark, and they are added to the totality that is the Allspark.

(The connection of the Allspark to Primus is not made explicit at this point but seems an obvious one to many fans).

===Dreamwave===

The [[Well of All Sparks]] exists on [[Cybertron]] and seems to have some connection to the mystical source of Transformer life.

==Means of access==

Applying the existance of the Allspark retroactively to previous continuities (as the Primus-singularity [[retcon]] allows. See his page for details on that.) leads to a new interpretation of some existing artifacts.

*Most prominently there are the [[Matrix of Leadership]] and the Creation Matrix, the legendary talismans carried by Autobot leaders in the Generation 1 cartoon and Marvel Comic respectively. The abilities of both these artifacts can be glossed as a result of their functioning as connections to the Allspark dimension.

*Secondly, there is the mega-computer [[Vector Sigma]], which, like the Matrix, endows new Transformers with life. In the Beast Era the most common method of communication with the Allspark via Vector Sigma involves the use of its [[shell program]], the [[Oracle (G1)|Oracle]], which permits a "receptive spark" to commune directly with the collective intelligence of the Allspark. (Though in some material there is evidence that the Oracle has been subverted to serve Quintesson ends.) Prior to the Oracle's existance, [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] used the empty shell of the Matrix of Leadership to access what we would see as the Allspark through Vector Sigma and spoke directly to the dead [[Alpha Trion]] who had previously been shown to have merged with Vector Sigma AND to reside in the Matrix (a discrepancy at the time that is now rectified by the retcon application of the Allspark to the G1 cartoon).

The All Spark is a physical object of mysterious origin. A large, metallic cube, it is inscribed with ornate runes and is believed to be responsible for creating and sustaining the Transformer race and the planet of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] itself.

===Prequel===

Swayed to the side of evil by the lure of the All Spark's power, Cybertron's co-ruler [[Megatron (Movie)|Lord Megatron]] went rogue with his own army, seeking to take control of it. At [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|Optimus Prime]]'s orders, [[Bumblebee (Movie)|Bumblebee]] and a group of Autobots secretly transported the All spark to [[Tyger Pax]], only to be pursued by the Decepticons. Megatron himself took a personal hand in the torture of Bumblebee, attempting to force him to reveal the All spark's location, but his efforts went in vain, and the All Spark was blasted into space to put it beyond Megatron's reach. In response, Megatron crushed Bumblebee's voice box and began to follow the All Spark to Earth.

The All Spark was found in 1913, 16 years after the [[N.B.E.]]-01 "[[Megatron (Movie)|Iceman]]" was found. The [[Cybertronian languages|glyphs]] on the cube were similar to the ones on the Iceman, indicating a link between the two. In order to hide the cube's energy signature from other humans and, potentially, from other N.B.E.s, the [[President of the United States|President]] had the [[Hoover Dam]] built around it. The Iceman was also moved to the dam for further study. It was eventually determined that the cube emitted a type of radiation which could [[Real Gear Robot|bring mechanical devices to life]].

Years later, when Megatron eventually came back online due to the intervention of his soldiers, [[Samuel James Witwicky|Sam Witwicky]] convinced Sector Seven (with the help of Captain [[William Lennox]]'s men) to release Bumblebee, explaining he could help. Bumblebee interacted with the cube and prompted it to collapse from an enormous monolith into a object less than half a meter across, and accordingly lesser in mass as well as volume. Bumblebee and a military escort, soon joined by the [[Autobot]]s, took the Cube to [[Mission City]], where Sam ran through the city avoiding the Decepticons. During the battle between Optimus Prime and Megatron, the Autobot leader told Sam to merge the Cube with his [[spark]]. However, Sam instead merged it with Megatron's spark, destroying both Megatron and the All Spark. Gazing at his dead brother for one last time, Optimus fished a fragment of the All Spark out of Megatron's chest.

Without a means to restore their homeworld, the Autobots elected to remain on Earth, and Prime sent a message to inform the surviving Autobots of their new found home.
