Within '''Cliffjumper''' burns the [[spark]] of a hero and a dedicated Autobot. On the outside is a paranoid, trigger-happy jerk with serious impulse-control problems. Cliffjumper utterly hates the [[Decepticon]]s. He also hates traitors. And anybody could be a traitor. Therefore, Cliffjumper hates everybody. It's unclear if he hates traitors more than he hates Decepticons, but it's at least a neck-and-neck thing.

He makes a habit of pulling [[Scale|ridiculously huge]] guns out of [[Exhaust port|nowhere]] and attacking impulsively despite orders or sanity. Somehow, this gets him neither killed nor demoted.

Cliffjumper's special weapon is his [[glass gas]], which embrittles metals on contact so that they shatter like glass. He is not immune to its effects, so its use requires careful consideration of wind direction. Actually, this may explain why he prefers the big guns. He doesn't seem like the calculating type.

Cliffjumper was a part of the crew on board the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]] when it crashed into [[Earth]] four million years ago while clearing an asteroid field in the path of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron.]] Upon reviving in 1984, Cliffjumper was chosen as part of the first field expedition into the world under [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl's]] command. Their simple recon mission to a drive-in movie theatre quickly turned into a battle when the Decepticons arrived. Cliffjumper was a part of the crew onboard the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]] when it crashed into [[Earth]] four million years ago during a search for new energy sources. His [[alt mode]] was reformatted into an oddly proportioned Porsche 924 Turbo.

When the Autobots awakened from their four million-year slumber, Cliffjumper was eager for action. He volunteered to tag along on [[Hound (G1)|Hound]]'s recon mission to scout out Decepticons because he was itching to "boot some Decepticon right in his [[turbocharger]]". Though [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]]'s orders were only to find the Decepticons, Cliffjumper brashly tried to engage the enemy once Hound sniffed them out.

Cliffjumper missed his shot, and the Decepticons dispatched [[Laserbeak (G1)|Laserbeak]] to chase off the Autobot eavesdroppers. Hound got pasted by Laserbeak's laser blasts and ended up requiring extensive repair from Autobot medic [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]] after being pulled out of a ditch by [[Hauler]]. Soon afterwards, Cliffjumper made a very public display of his paranoia by accusing fellow Autobot and reluctant soldier [[Mirage (G1)|Mirage]] of being a traitor on some very flimsy evidence, much to the (correct) disbelief of the other Autobots. He kept up his rhetoric even after Optimus Prime ordered him to can it. So determined was he to prove his theory true that he followed Mirage when the latter returned to the Decepticon power station to sow seeds of discontent within the Decepticon ranks. Fortunately, in the end it was proven that Mirage was a loyal Autobot all along, and Cliffjumper fell across Mirage's body, asking Ratchet to fix him for not trusting a comrade. [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]] and [[Kenji]] found the Decepticon communicator first, but Bumblebee was able to get the drop on him and shattered his chest door with a "Bumble Kick". Cliffjumper and [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]] then arrived to take care of the cassettes, who cut their losses and tried to take refuge in Soundwave's chest compartment, only to find that they couldn't get in through the broken door. Rather than follow their usual tack, attempting to cheat their way to the fuel, the Decepticons decided to sneak into the race simply for the sake of giving the Autobots a thrashing. Cliffjumper was one of the Autobots driving in the rally, and he was unaware that the scary black Cadillac was actually being driven by Megatron until he tried to pass it. Megatron dogged the Minibot for quite a while, until a telephone pole-wielding Optimus Prime swatted the Decepticon leader out of the race. Cliffjumper was a part of the crew on-board the ''[[Ark (G1)|Ark]]'' when it crashed into [[Earth]] four million years ago while clearing an asteroid in the path of Cybertron. He was one of many Transformers captured and reprogrammed by arms dealer [[Lazarus|Adam 'Lazarus' Rook]] for lease to terrorist organizations and shady governments requiring brutal military might. Fortunately, Autobots under the command of Optimus Prime repaired and re-reprogrammed Cliffjumper and the remaining captive Autobots. Immediately, they were put to work on fighting Megatron's metallic virus, which had spread deep into [[Canada|Canadian]] territory, using their own internal power as the anti-virus. {{storylink|Prime Directive issue 5}}

As Cliffjumper collapsed into the snow out of exhaustion, the Canadian military arrived. Unfortunately, due to the recent attacks by both enslaved Autobots and Decepticons under the command of Rook, the Canadians attempted to stop the Autobots doing what they perceived to be an attack on their soil. Knowing that the virus fed upon weapons fire, Cliffjumper tried to stop a tank crew from causing further harm by bending the tank's main gun. Sometime later, the unified Cybertronian army arrived on Earth and demanded the surrender of all active Autobots and Decepticons. After the initial encounter left several Autobots damaged, Optimus Prime brought most of his crew back to the ''Ark'' for repairs while Prowl organized a small detachment for reconnaissance purposes. Cliffjumper and Mirage were teamed together for the recon assignment, but were captured by [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] and his contingent of soldiers. The Combaticons then attacked a nearby shuttle bay, hoping to scrap the ships which would be used to ferry delegates to the conference. First Aid happily blasted away at the Combaticons. After the battle, First Aid was tending to a serious wound Magnus suffered on his back, when he used his own body to shield Wheelie from a Decepticon attack. When attention turned to the damaged shuttle, Ultra Magnus insisted First Aid repair the ship first and deal with his injuries. Guess he forgot First Aid was a doctor, not a mechanic! Unfortunately, Swindle managed to make off with his loot because the pacifist Autobot refused to fight back. After Megatron and the [[Combaticon (G1)|Combaticons]] arrived ready for a fight, the Transformers allowed themselves to be convinced of a better solution by [[Ethan Zachary]], an employee of EFI. Zachary would upload their minds into a video simulation program known as Multi-World, allowing the Transformers to do battle without damaging the hydrothermocline or the surrounding area. Inside the game world, First Aid and [[Streetwise (G1)|Streetwise]] were exploring Vineland when their path was blocked by a web of thick vines. First Aid wanted to blast through, but Streetwise thought better of it and merely lifted the vines out of their way. They were caught off-guard by the Combaticons [[Brawl (G1)|Brawl]] and [[Swindle (G1)|Swindle]], but were then miraculously saved by the living vines they had refrained from destroying moments ago. First Aid then used his [[decrystallizer cannon]] on the Decepticons, making them brittle enough for Streetwise to shatter with a burst from his compressed air cannon.

The Protectobots seem to have been split up; Hot Spot led an assortment of other (non-Protectobot) Autobots on a mission to stop Megatron on Earth, which ended with his self-destruction to avoid capture by Cobra.

Meanwhile, the rest of the team was under Grimlock's command as he took on the second-generation Cybertronians. They joined a mission to destroy the Cybertronian flagship ''[[Twilight (G2)|Twilight]]''; Grimlock hadn't quite thought things through, however, and the mission ended with the Autobots held captive. A subsequent rescue mission by Optimus Prime freed the Autobots.

Groove later joined the Aerialbots, Hot Rod, and the Dinobots in a training exercise on a deep space asteroid. Blades suffered rotor damage when he was shot by Rumble on Earth, as part of a Grimlock-led assault force against Megatron's Decepticons to back up Optimus Prime's truce-seeking mission.

As one of the powerful and contested combiner teams, the Protectobots were supposed to remain neutral. However, when the [[Ultracons]] recruited Devastator and turned him loose on their enemies, the Protectobots felt they had no choice but to respond. As Defensor, they counter-attacked the Constructicon combiner, but the fragile industrial area around them was being destroyed. Eventually, they succeeded in taking down Devastator as individuals, through careful teamwork.

After the battle, the team tried to figure out why their combined form still wasn't living up to his intellectual potential. Before they could find an answer, the [[Chaos Trinity]] attacked the team's secret base. Hot Spot was unwilling to use Defensor, afraid of a repeat of what had happened before. :The Protectobots are fairly standard Scramble City-style toys: four simple, small figures who form the limbs of the combined form, sold carded at the $5 price point, and one larger leader who forms the central torso, sold boxed at $12. All five can combine to form [[Defensor (G1)|Defensor]].

:Unlike the Aerialbots and Stunticons who slightly preceded them, the smaller Protectobots do not share a standard transformation scheme. All feature shoulder swivels as their only notable articulation; some have knee joints, but they are rendered useless by their fused uni-feet. Three of them do have an odd fist design, with the post-hole on the side rather than the top; their guns feature L-shaped grips to compensate. All four small members of the team come with add-on weapons for their vehicle modes. They share a color palette dominated by whites, reds, light grays, and black.

* The Protectobots' sudden, unexplained appearance in the animated series is a result of the information on the characters not being delivered to the production staff before the second season's final run of plots were decided upon. Consequently, the team could not be given an "origin" episode, but they were nonetheless inserted into the events of "The Revenge of Bruticus" and "B.O.T." without explanation for where they came from in order to appease Hasbro.
