Marty Isenberg (born July 30, 1959) is an American television writer responsible for co-story editing Beast Machines alongside Bob Skir and story editing Transformers Animated. When he joined the Animated production staff his first task was to revise the production bible. Later on, he would pen the original-story Animated comic series for IDW. It was his goal to make Animated "the most fun Transformers series ever". Rock on, Marty.

Marty has also dabbled with voice acting, providing the voice of Animated Optimus Prime for the series' test-track to get early animation before David Kaye was cast for the role.

He has also contributed a significant amount of work for Cartoon Network and other properties. His highest profile non-Transformers work has been as a writer for the revival of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Other works include such comic-to-cartoon properties as Batman the Animated Series, Spider-Man, X-Men and Sam & Max: Freelance Police!, as well episodes from Godzilla: The Series, usually in partnership with Bob Skir. From 2010 he started to create shows for The Hub, starting with the Animated-feeling G.I. Joe: Renegades.
The Scavengers use Grimlock to fight back against the D.J.D.

Synopsis
Years ago, above the planet Clemency, a regiment of K-Class Decepticons prepare to drop into the battle raging below. The perky Torque introduces himself to a somber Fulcrum, who says nothing. And then, the order is given to disembark and enter the conflict...

On Clemency today, within a crashed P-6 Worldsweeper, the rag-tag team of Decepticon "Scavengers" desperately try to figure out what to do about the approach of the Decepticon Justice Division. With none of their number willing to own up to being the unfortunate soul the D.J.D. are looking for, Krok proposes that they stand and fight, and although Fulcrum laughs in his face, the other Decepticons get behind the idea and begin a plot to use the comatose Grimlock to their advantage.

Across space, on the Lost Light, Skids—his tune changed about his amnesia following a recent conversation with Chromedome—requests that the mnemosurgeon use his mind-reading abilities to see if he can unlock his lost memories. Chromedome discovers that Skids's memories of the last year have not just been suppressed: they have been erased, replaced with an imperative to "escape". However, all the memories from before that point that Skids has lost are indeed still locked inside his head, buried away by the trauma of the erasure of the others... but upon getting a glimpse of them, Chromedome is so horrified that he pulls out, assuring Skids that he's better off not remembering them. Skids grimly accepts this, but reveals to Chromedome that he always hears a piece of music playing inside his mind. Having heard it as well, Chromedome identifies it as "The Empyrean Suite", and hopes that Skids never understands its significance...

Back on Clemency, the Scavengers lug the capsule containing Grimlock out into the open, informing the D.J.D. that they have killed their target and placed him in it, learning in the process that the Division is looking for Fulcrum. Presently, the D.J.D. arrive and approach the capsule, at which point Krok triggers the circuit speeders he laced it with, jolting Grimlock awake and into a berzerker rage. The Scavengers use the resultant brawl as cover to escape, but the D.J.D. have smelled a retro-rat and Helex appears to block their way. The battle that follows is a gruesome one as Flywheels is killed by Tesarus's chest grinder, and Vos removes his own face, laden with spikes, and jams it over Krok's own. Misfire accidentally shoots Krok when he tries to help him, and is then mauled by Kaon's pet Sparkeater. Tarn, meanwhile, turns his "weaponized conversation" on Grimlock, but before he can end his life, Crankcase comes to the rescue in the most unexpected way: he has recovered a cybernought battle-mech from the Worldsweeper, and begins raining destruction down on the D.J.D. Unfortunately, an electric shock from Kaon cripples both mech and pilot, and the giant robot is quickly taken down by Tarn. In answer to Tarn's bellowed challenge, Fulcrum then appears atop the Worldsweeper and delivers a speech decrying the D.J.D. as symbolic of everything that went wrong with the Decepticon movement. He leaps from the ship, and transforms... into a bomb! He lands with the least dramatic impact possible, barely causing a cloud of dust, at which point Kaon alerts Tarn to his detection of the Overlord's energy signature. Considering Fulcrum dead, the D.J.D. pull out to pursue this new target, warning the Scavengers that they are all on their list now.

Fulcrum, however, is anything but dead, much to his own surprise: it turns out that the very first thing the Scavengers did upon finding him the previous day was remove his explosive charge - apparently Spinister was capable of the difficult manual task despite his lack of intelligence. Fulcrum tries to explain his story to them—how he was convicted of desertion of duty and conscripted into a K-Squad, reconfigured to auto-transform into a bomb upon deployment, only for his systems to become paralyzed with terror—but they lose interest very quickly and check up on Grimlock instead, who soon reveals why he was left behind in the Worldsweeper: he is almost completely brain-dead. The Scavengers decide to head back to Cybertron with him, figuring they can use him as a bargaining chip regardless of whether the Autobots or Decepticons are in charge of the planet. Before they depart, Misfire delivers a eulogy for the fallen Flywheels, mocking his search for the Necrobot, and the team then descend upon his body, doing what they do best: scavenging.

Eighteen months later... a shadow falls over Flywheels's skeletal remains. The all-too-real Necrobot has come to mark his passing, and adds his name to a list of the recently deceased: right after Hound, Chromedome, Dipstick, Drift and Ultra Magnus...
:—Fulcrum

"Anyway, I thought you liked having amnesia."<br>
"Who told you that?"<br>
"You told Swerve, right? So assume everyone on board knows. In fact, assume everyone on Cybertron knows. In fact, assume that distant alien races, otherwise untouched by civilization—"<br>
"Okay, okay, point taken."
:—Chromedome and Skids

"I was lucky. I was forged when the Decepticon Empire was at it's peak. We'd overthrown out oppressors, we'd torn down a system that served only those at the top, and we'd turned outwards—refining the galaxy by cleansing it of organic races too backward to reconfigure their inferior nature. And you know what went wrong? People like you. The thugs and the sadists and the psychos—people for whom the war was a convenient excuse to inflict pain. Yesterday, my faith in the Decepticon was restored. I met six scavengers—and they were average and normal and brilliant, and they fought on my behalf when I really, really didn't deserve it. And I know you look down on them, but each one of them is worth ten of you. So what I'm about to do, I do for them—and for everyone else the D.J.D. has murdered. This is for everyone who's ever turned and fled in protest at what the Decepticons have become!"
:—Fulcrum

Misfire: "A senseless waste. His ludicrous search for the Necrobot ends unfulfilled. A terrible, terrible tragedy. Boo hoo."<br>
Fulcrum: "'Boo hoo'? I though Flywheels was your friend! You're just going to leave him here?"<br>
Misfire: "You're right. What were we thinking?"<br>
Crankcase: "I'm having his rotor system—"<br>
Misfire: "There's probably enough for a sip of innermost energon each..."<br>
Spinister: "Leave the knees for me."

Notes
* The title likely refers to the children's song, "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?".
* The return of Grimlock coincidences with that of the rest of his team in Robots in Disguise #8 and another appearance by Big Grim himself in The Transformers: Regeneration One #82 for a micro-event called out on the August covers as "Dinobot Month!"
* Rewind screens a public information film named "Proteus's Promise" for his crewmates; presumably, the title character is Senator Proteus from "Chaos Theory".
*Skids and Chromedome's conversation is footnoted to have occurred in the More than Meets the Eye 2012 annual, which was released a few weeks after publication of this issue. This tactic seems to deliberately hearken back to the Marvel UK days, when important story beats would appear in the Annual stories.
*Chromedome knows Skids from a "heist" pulled back on Cybertron before the war. This heist is dealt with in the upcoming "Shadowplay" storyline.
*Skids is revealed to be a master of Cybertronian martial art Metallikato, and in the same breath name-drops the Povians of Pova, from Last Stand of the Wreckers.
*The D.J.D.'s turbofox, glimpsed last issue and referred to in the cast list at the end of this issue as "The Pet", is also a Sparkeater (well, more of a "sparkchewer"). Here it's specifically identified as Kaon's pet, but Helex was holding its chain last issues; Kaon was in alternate mode at the time, so perhaps he was just holding it for him.
*Fulcrum refers to his imprisonment in Styx, the Decepticon penal colony only previously seen in Spotlight: Hot Rod.
*We're not told what the "K" in "K-Class" stands for, but given their suicidal job description, "kamikaze" seems almost certain.
**One of the K-Class soldiers has "Ultra Magnus" written on him while in bomb mode, probably indicating that he was targeting this specific Autobot.
*The normal cast list at the end of the issue is replaced with a new list showcasing the D.J.D. members, The Pet, the Scavengers, and Fulcrum.

Errors
* Perhaps not strictly an error, but while the in-story text consistently abbreviates "Decepticon Justice Division" as "D.J.D.", the title renders it "DJD" without the periods.
* Reference is repeatedly made to Fulcrum's impressive, distinctive chin... but it's not any bigger or more notable than many of the other characters, and certainly not more than Misfire's and Grimlock's in their profile-angled shots on page 21, which are positively Animated in their chintasticness.
* This issue ends with a lament over Flywheels's "ludicrous search" for the Necrobot... except last issue, it was Misfire who was searching for him. As such, the obvious poetry of the final scene, in which the Necrobot comes to record the death of one who has searched for him for so long, is... kinda screwed up. Given that Flywheels is being played a born-again religious type in this story, the role of believer in the Necrobot fits him well and suggests that issue #7's depiction of Misfire as the believer was probably the one in error. James Roberts later confirmed this was an error, and should be fixed for the trade.
* For some reason, Spinister is absent during most of the battle against the D.J.D..
When mysterious explosions begin going off across Cybertron, Wheeljack and Starscream must put aside their differences to find their source and save Iacon.

Synopsis
The Aerialbots arrive at the Decepticon encampment to perform crowd control while Prowl's security forces remove Ratbat's deceased body. Things start to turn ugly when Prowl makes the infeasible claim that Ratbat committed suicide, and although Starscream backs up the lie, it does little to quell the rowdy Decepticons. Dirge stalks off, sick and tired of the lies and squabbles, but the idealistic Aerialbot Barrel Roll follows him, trying to get him to listen to reason and believing that fliers should stick together. Just as he appears to be getting through to Dirge, a gigantic spontaneous explosion destroys Barrel Roll and several others nearby.

Bumblebee calls on Wheeljack to analyze the mysterious blast, and the scientist is grateful to get out of his workshop and away from an argument over currency exchange between Tappet and Hippotank. As he goes about his work, political tensions are strained even harder: Prowl blames the Decepticons, Metalhawk blames everybody, and Starscream uses the situation to raise issues pertinent to the Decepticons' quality of life. Miffed at Starscream's backhanded altruism, Wheeljack decides to question Dirge, who is recuperating in a medical facility, but the Seeker's fatalistic blame-throwing only serves to aggravate him. Wheeljack's irritation has nothing on Silverbolt's, however: the Aerialbot leader comes storming into the med-bay, blaming Dirge for Barrel Roll's death and seeking revenge. Intent on studying the mystery from all angles before action is taken, Wheeljack is able to throw off Silverbolt's shot and save the Decepticon.

A second explosion occurs during the night just outside the space port, killing thirty-five more Transformers. Again studying the blast crater, Wheeljack is accused by Starscream of failing in his duties because he is only being reactionary, rather than getting ahead of the problem. Wheeljack scoffs when Starscream claims that he could do some real good if he could get the Seekers back together, and begins listing off the dead, arrested or MIA members of the squad... and has a brainstorm when he gets to Thundercracker. Starscream struggles to follow his explanation: with Cybertron alive once more, the planet is now transmitting energy to its moon, reviving it in as well, but because the planet has returned to a prehistoric state, at a time when it had two moons, excess energy is being transmitted that has nowhere to go, coalescing over time and with increasing frequency as explosive bursts akin to ball lightning. With the realization that another explosion is coming within minutes, Starscream scrambles to gather the NAILs in the Decepticons' barracks within the barrel of Kimia's gun, which will be able to resist the temperatures of the blast if Wheeljack is unable to prevent it. Wheeljack, meanwhile, jury-rigs a set of rockets that he launches into low orbit with help from Ironhide, successfully giving the energy charge something to latch on to and allowing it to harmlessly erupt above Cybertron's surface. Arcee watches the cold explosion overhead, and smiles.

Bumblebee, Prowl, Metalhawk and the others arrive at Wheeljack's location just as everything is calming down. Starscream thanks Wheeljack for saving them, but Wheeljack is quick to point out to Bumblebee that even if he had failed to prevent the explosion, it would have been Starscream's quick thinking that would have saved the NAILs. On Wheeljack's recommendation, Bumblebee agrees to let Starscream join their government—which causes Silverbolt to blow a fuse and furiously strike the little yellow 'bot. Prowl tries to intervene, but is likewise slapped down by the Aerialbot leader, who gathers his men and announces that they are seceding from Bumblebee's government. As all assembled watch them go, Starscream quietly remarks that fliers should stick together, and Bumblebee realizes that the Decepticon genuinely doesn't want them to go. He apologizes for zapping Starscream the previous day, and Starscream assures him he won't regret his decision.
Quotes
Notes
*Unlike the other characters in this series who were in the game, Air Raid does not appear with his War for Cybertron design, instead using a different Cybertronian body based on his Generation 2 Cyberjet stealth bomber form.
*Ratbat was found by Mixmaster stabbed through with a sword, with one arm ripped off and the other pinned to a wall, and Prowl thinks he can call that suicide? Starscream makes an oblique remark about "offering Ratbat his assistance", but it's unclear if he means in a political sense, or if he's actually trying to say he helped Ratbat kill himself. While the latter would help Prowl's lie, Starscream was standing on a stage in front of hundreds of 'bots when Ratbat was killed...
*Dirge was last seen in a flashback in All Hail Megatron #7, the events of which he recounts here. While he survived the Insecticon swarm, it doesn't sound like we'll be seeing Deluge again!
*A sky-sled can be spotted mounted on the wall just behind Wheeljack's head in his workshop. This was a fixture of Ironfist's workshop, indicating that Wheeljack accepted the offer to take it over Xaaron said he was going to make back in "Chaos Theory Part 1" (and, of course, that the workshop survived the crash of Kimia).
*Among the assembled junk in Wheeljack's workshop is: a computer readout of the Kronosphere from "War Dawn", a model of Wheeljack's Cybertronian vehicle mode and a stack of energy conductors from "More than Meets the Eye, Part 1", the green, circular bomb from "More than Meets the Eye, Part 2", the chunk of meteor from "War of the Dinobots", the hypno-chip nullifier from "The Ultimate Doom, Part 3", the two designs of the cosmitron from "Divide and Conquer", the experimental generator from "Masquerade" (basically—and not coincidentally, we wager!—all the stuff Wheeljack is fiddling with in the screencaps included in his article on this wiki!), as well as the Crystal of Power from "Fire on the Mountain" one of Metroplex and/or Trypticon's eyes from "Ghost in the Machine", which are hidden by a speech balloon in the first panel and only vaguely apparent in the second. Also visible is the head of an R5-series droid from Star Wars.
*Fixit might seem odd to see amongst the Protectobots on first impression, given that the team has its own medic in First Aid, but IDW continuity has yet to establish them as even being a team, and in any case, the previous story "Bullets" has established that First Aid is stationed on another planet at the medical facility Delphi.
*Ramjet and Thrust's deaths are mentioned, from Spotlights Ramjet and Prowl respectively.
*The mysterious loss of one of Cybertron's moons was previously mentioned in More than Meets the Eye #1.
*Colourist Josh Perez continues to color generic characters and objects as homages to other things: the NAIL in the foreground of the medi-bay is colored like the Tonka GoBots character Rest-Q, while Wheeljack's rocket launcher is colored to resemble Omega Spreem.
#You must pick your top five Transformers characters, from any era. They must actually be Transformers; sorry, but no humans, non-Transformer aliens, non-Transformer robots, or anything else of the sort are being considered for the Hall of Fame. Any votes for such entities will not be tabulated. It is the sole discretion of the contest organizers to decide what does and does not count.
#Take your top five list and put it in alphabetical order. Order of preference does not matter. Feel free to denote the character's franchise of origin, although these distinctions may or may not figure into the final results.
#You cannot vote for a specific version of Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron, Starscream, Dinobot, Ironhide, Ratchet, Soundwave, or Waspinator. They've already been inducted!

I don't have Exiles yet - is there reason to believe AP isn't just Liege Maximo's real name, since LM is a title?
: It's not used in the book as a title. For example, it's always parsed "Liege Maximo," not "the Liege Maximo." Also, it was declared a title in G2, and Aligned continuity doesn't necessarily have to follow that. It could merely be his name now. It certainly didn't follow a lot of other stuff regarding the 13. (*coughcoughAlphaTrioncoughcough*) Either way, it's not our place to jump to such conclusions quite yet, not without more information. --ItsWalky 22:17, 4 October 2011 (EDT)
: Does "Exiles" state for sure that the guy with big horns is Amalgamous? People who have been to Botcon have mentioned Liege Maximo's new design as still having horns and looking just like Loki, so I find it a bit odd that there's apparently two Loki lookalikes in the Thirteen. --71.17.207.182 23:20, 4 October 2011 (EDT)
