Grimlock and the Dinobots were originally animatronic [[dinosaur]] models at the [[Dino Drive]] theme park that were badly damaged by the clumsy Autobot [[Bulkhead (Animated)|Bulkhead]]. The remains were brought to [[Isaac Sumdac]]'s lab for repair, where the disembodied Megatron took an interest in them and attempted to turn them into robotic attack drones as practice for re-creating his own body. Thusly rebuilt, the Dinobots went on a rampage at Dino Drive, but were restrained by the Autobots when [[Ratchet (Animated)|Ratchet]] and [[Bumblebee (Animated)|Bumblebee]] captured them in an electromagnetic field. When the [[AllSpark Key]] reacted by tugging her toward her Autobot friends, she plugged it into Bumblebee's weapons systems to boost their powers, but this only resulted in the Dinobots being blasted with AllSpark energy. The three robots were apparently left deactivated by the blast and were returned to Sumdac's lab once more. It was there, however, that the full extent of their exposure to the AllSpark's energy was revealed, as the three Dinobots suddenly came to life!

The ''Tyrannosaurus'' dubbed itself Grimlock and declared itself to be leader of the group, despite Megatron's attempts to give the trio orders. In contrast, the lab's other occupant, the [[Tutor Bot]], happily responded to Megatron's cries for obedience and began a lesson on dinosaurs, their connection to fossil fuels, and the use of fossil fuels in cars. The simple-minded Grimlock took this to mean that cars "ate" dinosaurs, and Megatron convinced the trio to destroy these "fossil feeders", including the only thing worse than cars...cars and trucks that turn into robots. Equipped with deadly [[fire-breath]] thanks to Megatron's enhancements, the Dinobots set about their task immediately, inevitably drawing the attention of the Autobots. At Bulkhead's suggestion, the Autobots drew them to a deserted parking lot, where the Dinobots wound up defeating themselves by melting down the lot's maccadam surface into tar and getting stuck in it.

Sumdac intended to destroy the Dinobots, writing them off as mindless machines, and [[Optimus Prime (Animated)|Optimus Prime]] agreed with his decision, but [[Prowl (Animated)|Prowl]] could sense the spark of life within them. With Bulkhead's help, he relocated them to a deserted island where they could live peacefully and undisturbed. Grimlock took an almost immediate dislike to some birds that defecated on him, but his anger had an unforeseen effect: It triggered another of Megatron's enhancements and caused him to [[Transformation|transform]] into robot mode! Snarl and Swoop were quite shocked, but Grimlock was rather pleased with the results. {{storylink|Blast from the Past}}

Some time after the Dinobots were deposited on the island, [[Meltdown (Animated)|Meltdown]] arrived to use the island as a hideout to create transformable humans. With his acid touch, he forcibly made the Dinobots his servants under threat of pain. In addition to having them serve as guards, Meltdown sent Swoop to kidnap Sari Sumdac. When Prowl and Bulkhead arrived to investigate, the Dinobots attacked them. After being dropped into Meltdown's base, [[Captain Fanzone]], who had followed the [[Autobot]]s, grabbed one of Meltdown's protective suits, which he used to trap the villain. Now free of Meltdown's control, the Dinobots transformed into robot mode and prepared to take their revenge on him. This wasn't totally unexpected; Prowl even offered Meltdown a choice: prison or the Dinobots. Then [[Colossus Rhodes]] and [[Fusion creature|two of Meltdown's early transforming-humans experiments]] walked out, and the Dinobots turned their attention toward them, terrifying the trio of mutants right before pulverizing them. It turned out that they decided to tell Prime nothing, but they were forced to reveal the truth when the Decepticons began preparations for a strike. Optimus was taken to Dinobot Island and tried to convince the Dinobots to help. Grimlock pretty much told Prime to slag off, saying that they destroyed robots. {{storylink|Megatron Rising - Part 1}} Later, [[Teletran-1]] crashed on Dinobot Island, and the Autobots and [[Decepticon]]s held their battle there. No sign of the Dinobots.

After the [[Cybertron Elite Guard]] arrived on Earth, Optimus took [[Supreme Commander]] [[Ultra Magnus (Animated)|Ultra Magnus]] and [[Sentinel Prime (Animated)|Sentinel Prime]] to investigate Optimus Prime's claims that the AllSpark was dispersed. En route to the ship, the Dinobots jumped the Autobots. Sentinel Prime was unimpressed, telling them to "shoo". Grimlock's transformation was a little more impressive, as was his sword. Ultra Magnus summoned lightning with his hammer, and the Dinobots snuck away into the wilderness. {{storylink|The Elite Guard}}

It was later learned that [[Blackarachnia (Animated)|Blackarachnia]] had washed ashore after falling off [[Teletran-1]], and the Dinobots took her in. Grimlock, an Alpha Male in the worst sense of the word, immediately claimed "Spider-Lady" as his, and he was not above using force to remind Swoop and Snarl. While she recuperated, Blackarachnia explored Meltdown's lair and discovered his genetic research. Realizing that he could remove her organic half and make fully robotic, Blackarachnia had the Dinobots liberate Meltdown from prison. After learning of their involvement, Optimus Prime, Prowl, and [[Bumblebee (Animated)|Bumblebee]] arrived, but Blackarachnia infected Bumblebee and Prowl with her venom, demanding that Optimus help Grimlock retrieve a genetic modifier from Meltdown's lab. However, once he had the modifier, Meltdown decided to remove the robotic half from Blackarachnia, intending to gain an organic Transformer, and sicced his two mutants on Prime and Grimlock. Fortunately, Swoop and Snarl arrived to help Grimlock, and Optimus removed the modifier before it changed Blackarachnia. Meltdown attempted to retrieve the device, but touching it caused him to break apart at a molecular level. Blackarachnia used Grimlock's jealousy to her advantage by getting close to Optimus, compelling Grimlock to attack the Autobot. Seeing that she had fled, Grimlock begged Blackarachnia to come back, saying that he loved her, but to no avail. Grimlock ran off practically in tears. The Dinobots later watched as an oil container with the [[Constructicon (Animated)|Constructicons]] riding on top of it appeared off the coast of [[Dinobot Island (Animated)|their island]] and exploded. {{storylink|Three's a Crowd}}

As part of the Dinobots' continued assistance of Blackarachnia in her [[technorganic]] experimentation (despite her apparent earlier desertion), Swoop kidnapped [[Wasp]], then stood guard with the other Dinobots as Blackarachnia convinced Wasp to undergo experimentation, turning him into Waspinator. [[Jetfire (Animated)|Jetfire]] and [[Jetstorm (Animated)|Jetstorm]] beat the Dinobots up while [[Sentinel Prime (Animated)|Sentinel Prime]] snuck by them. After [[Starscream (Animated)|Starscream]] and his clones attempted to steal the Autobots' base, Sari (somehow) escaped to Dinobot Island, hoping to convince Grimlock and Co. to come to the mainland and deal with the Starscreams. Things seemed to take a turn for the worse as she stumbled upon a furious Grimlock during some heavy rain. Things worked out however, as it wasn't long before the Dinobots burst into the factory and summarily trounced the clones. Starscream thought better about fighting back, and when the Autobots were freed made his escape. Bumblebee was amazed the Dinobots had agreed to help...until Sari revealed they hated the rain and she'd told them they could stay at the base until the rain stopped. As Grimlock made himself comfortable, Ratchet relayed some sorry news: the weather forecast for the future was heavy rain, with chance of fire breathing squatters. {{storylink|Transformers Comic issue 17|Dino-MIGHT!}}

[[Teletraan-1]] reactivated Omega Supreme to fly the Plasma Energy Chamber to safety. Omega was horrified to be informed by the [[Communication Grid]] that the [[Decepticon]]s held eighty-five percent of the planet; that only three of the High Council lived and all of them were Decepticons; the [[AllSpark]] had been ejected from the [[Well of All Sparks]]; and Sentinel Prime was dying. He informed [[Optimus Prime (Prime)|Optimus Prime]] he should have reactivated him sooner, though they had no idea he even existed, and Omega acknowledged it was because of Optimus that the Autobots held out for so long.

Omega tried to fly into space, where Teletraan-1 would give him instructions as to where to hide the Chamber, but [[Starscream (Prime)|Starscream]]'s [[Seeker (body-type)|Seeker]]s attacked. Omega blew up two Seekers before his own nozzles were shot at and he reverted to robot mode and fell back into [[Iacon (polity)|Iacon]]. [[Ironhide (Prime)|Ironhide]] was horrified by the Guardian's destruction but fortunately, Omega survived the impact and inspired the Autobots to fight off the Decepticons seeking to gain the Chamber. Omega killed four [[Dark Energon]]-infused Decepticons, but Megatron hammered him in the knee causing him to collapse and allowing a swarm of gladiators to crawl on him. Omega fell, crushing the gladiators, but the Dark Energon left their bodies to power Megatron to the point he could turn Omega on his back. He threatened to slice his throat, but he only wanted the Chamber, and tore it out of Omega's body before escaping.

Omega Supreme was the guardian of the [[Omega Gate]], which gave access to the Core of Cybertron. Omega lay inactive during the war until Megatron's forces invaded [[Iacon (polity)|Iacon]] seeking what they thought was the [[Omega Key]] (which would allow access to the Core), forcing [[Sentinel Zeta Prime|Zeta Prime]] to activate the false Omega Key and awaken the sleeping giant. His mission: Destroy Megatron.

Omega followed the homing signal of the false key and destroyed the fleet of Decepticon ships Megatron was using to search for him. As the Decepticons were securing their wounded, the mighty Autobot attacked, destroying their rescue ship and killing the survivors. At first, the Decepticons seemingly defeated the Guardian of Iacon when they destroyed the supports for a section of bridge Omega was standing upon, but the Autobot returned with a vengeance, using his main gun to disintegrate what remained of the bridge and forcing Megatron's squad to flee to safety.

Omega Supreme attacked Megatron wherever he went, destroying a cargo lift the Decepticon rode, smashing his way through a tunnel and laying landmines upon a bridge that was the only route to safety. Eventually, Omega Supreme tracked the Decepticons to an Autobot anti-aircraft battery on a terrace and attacked with his main gun, heatseeking missiles, [[Aerialbot (WFC)|Aerialbots]] and briefly defending himself with an impenetrable energon barrier. However, the Decepticons discerned the pattern of Omega's attacks and breached his armour thanks to the terrace' turrets, forcing him to crash down into a sub-level of Iacon below.

Sure that the Autobot was destroyed and eager to get his hands on the means to open the Omega Gate, Megatron led his squad down, only to find that Omega Supreme had transformed and re-energized himself with energon batteries drawn from underground. Omega Supreme battered the Decepticons with a combination of missiles, laser turrets, his main gun and a powerful arm-mounted tractor beam, until [[Soundwave (Prime)|Soundwave]] deduced that Omega's defensive weakness were his turrets - destroying them forced the Autobot guardian to draw upon the energon batteries to regenerate. Seizing the advantage, the Decepticons infected the batteries with a charge of Dark Energon, corrupting Omega Supreme's systems when he drained the batteries. While Omega dealt with the Dark Energon with a counter-virus, Megatron attacked, severely damaging the Autobot's armour. Down, but not out, Omega Supreme drew energy from Cybertron's core itself and unleashed a withering multitude of missiles upon the Decepticons. However, with his internal shielding exposed, Omega was vulnerable, and eventually the Decepticons brought him down by blasting his exposed chest cavity. Gloating in victory, Megatron blasted Dark Energon into Omega Supreme's chest, and the Autobot, helpless to fight against it, was corrupted. Omega Supreme was taken underground where he was forced to open the Omega Gate, allowing Megatron to corrupt Cybertron's core with Dark Energon.

The rumours of Omega Supreme and Zeta Prime's defeats spread through the Autobot camp, leaving the Autobots direction-less and dispirited. Just when hoped seemed to die for the Autobots, a new hero stepped up to lead them: [[Optimus Prime (Prime)|Optimus Prime]], the last of the [[Prime (rank)|Primes]].

Charged by the [[Autobot High Council]] with destroying the infection to Cybertron's core, Optimus Prime lead a team consisting of [[Ironhide (Prime)|Ironhide]] and [[Warpath (WFC)|Warpath]] to the chamber outside the Omega Gate, where Omega Supreme was being imprisoned. There they found the Decepticons torturing the giant Autobot and force-feeding him Dark Energon to prevent him from repairing himself and escaping his bonds. After his captors were destroyed, [[Ratchet (Prime)|Ratchet]] began repairing Omega Supreme's damage and Dark Energon corruption, but the party were set upon by dozens of Decepticon reinforcements. Just as they were attacked by a Decepticon [[Destroyer (WFC)|Destroyer]], Omega Supreme regained enough functionality to rip the foe to pieces with one hand.

With the present Decepticon threat removed, Omega Supreme opened the Omega Gate to Cybertron's core. However, his systems were not yet fully operational; repairs would have to be completed at Autobot headquarters while Optimus and his team headed down into the depths of Cybertron.

Omega Supreme attacked Megatron wherever he went, destroying a cargo lift the Decepticon rode, smashing his way through a tunnel and laying landmines upon a bridge that was the only route to safety. Eventually, Omega Supreme tracked the Decepticons to an Autobot anti-aircraft battery on a terrace and attacked with his main gun, heatseeking missiles, [[Aerialbot (WFC)|Aerialbots]] and briefly defending himself with an impenetrable energon barrier. However, the Decepticons discerned the pattern of Omega's attacks and breached his armour thanks to the terrace' turrets, forcing him to crash down into a sub-level of Iacon below.

Optimus was present when he arrived, discussing the latest findings of the Science Division with Megatron, but ended it so the two arrivals could report on Defense Force activity. Interest piqued by Optimus's report, Megatron travelled to the [[Excavation site LT34|excavation site]] near [[Simfur]] and arrived just when the Science Division found the first whole specimen of [[Sarcophagus|ancient artifacts]] that had been littered around the site. As Megatron and Optimus argued over what to do with, the aliens of the Eshems Nebula attacked. Megatron ordered the Science Division to dig up the artifact and bring it to his quarters in Trypticon, where it would be safe. Optimus reluctantly obeyed the order.

Once the battle was as good as won and Megatron had sustained some bad injuries, he dragged himself back to his quarters, feeling the artifact call to him. {{storylink|Defiance issue 1|Defiance #1}} When he had recovered, the artifact spoke to him, revealing itself to be [[The Fallen]], one of the [[Dynasty of Primes|original Primes]]. The Fallen promised Megatron power if he would serve him and Megatron accepted greedily. When shortly after Optimus knocked on Megatron's doors to talk about the nature of the alien assault, Megatron ordered him to get his Science Division in gear and prepare to eradicate the threat of the aliens. Optimus opposed the idea, believing it went against Cybertron's ideals to actively seek combat, but Megatron refused to hear his arguments. And because the crisis Cybertron currently was in granted him hierarchical superiority over Optimus, he didn't have to either. Later that day, Megatron held his pre-battle rallying speech at Trypticon for all who were willing to fight. Then they took off to the Eshems Nebula, while those that had decided against fighting went to work on repairing what damage the aliens had caused with their assault.

Optimus made use of Megatron's absence to get into his quarters and find out what was causing his recent aggressive behavior. {{storylink|Defiance issue 2|Defiance #2}} He found the artifact Megatron had confiscated earlier in a far better condition than in which it had been handed to him, but before he could take a better look, [[Prowl (Movie)|Prowl]] warned him Megatron was on his way back. And naturally, when Megatron returned to his quarters, The Fallen told him all about Optimus's trespassing. Megatron decided it was time to dispose of Optimus before his former friend would dispose of him and arranged for him and his followers to be assassinated at [[Metrotitan (ROTF)|Metrotitan]]. The plot did not yield the desired results, but later that night at Trypticon, Megatron could use the battered state in which his soldiers returned as "evidence" that Optimus and his kind were out to destroy the Defense Force. Trypticon's first mission was to attack [[Ark (G1)|Autobot Headquarters]], but he met resistance in the form of a team of [[Mini Vehicle|Minibots]]. Trypticon knocked [[Powerglide (G1)|Powerglide]] out of the sky and shrugged off the other Autobots' attacks from below (stepping on [[Swerve (G1)|Swerve]] in the process) before battling his way through a barrage of cannon fire and leveling Autobot Headquarters. With this task complete, Trypticon turned his attention to [[Autobot City]] and Metroplex, and the giant Autobot could not have been at a worse disadvantage, being as he was without his [[Transformation cog|transforming cog]] and thus unable to transform to robot mode. Thankfully, the timely arrival of [[Blurr (G1)|Blurr]] and [[Wheelie (G1)|Wheelie]] with the cog allowed Metroplex to transform and gain the upper hand in the battle. While the Autobots believed that Trypticon had been destroyed, the dinosaur Decepticon had, in fact, retreated to [[Dinobot Island (G1)|Dinobot Island]] to recuperate. In 2006, in the midst of his recovery, Trypticon was approached by Decepticon wheeler-dealer [[Octane]], who talked him into relocating with him to the [[Socialist Democratic Federated Republic of Carbombya]]. There, Octane made a deal with ruler [[Abdul Fakkadi (G1)|Abdul Fakkadi]]: In exchange for the Carbombya's high-grade oil, he and Trypticon would guard the country's coasts.

Octane turned things around by arranging to have Trypticon use his prodigious size and strength to steal famous monuments for Fakkadi from around the world. Initially, the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobots]] and [[Sky Lynx (G1)|Sky Lynx]] were suspected of the thefts, but [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]] linked the crime back to Trypticon, and the Decepticon was caught in the act stealing the [[Eiffel Tower]]. Trypticon was able to beat the Autobots back, and he then attempted to steal the Kremlin, but was ambushed by the waiting Autobot forces and stopped from doing so. With help from Fakkadi, the Autobots tracked the Decepticons back to Carbombya, where Metroplex engaged Trypticon in battle once more and hurled him into the ocean again. {{storylink|Thief in the Night}}

Trypticon survived his dunking and was relocated to [[Chaar]], where he was the victim of the ghost of deceased Decepticon [[Starscream (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Starscream]] when the spirit made a pact with [[Unicron]] to restore his body. In exchange for this boon, the dark god charged Starscream with fulfilling three tasks, beginning with the theft of Metroplex's eyes to replace Unicron's own. One of Metroplex's eyes was destroyed in the attempted theft, necessitating that Starscream and his pawn, [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]], steal one of Trypticon's instead. Next, Starscream possessed Trypticon's body itself and brought the giant Decepticon to Unicron so that his transforming cog could be transplanted into Unicron's head. The final task was to connect Unicron's head to Cybertron itself, so the planet could become his new body, but as Starscream used Trypticon's possessed body to complete the connections, [[Thrust (G1)|Thrust]], [[Dirge (G1)|Dirge]] and the [[Battlecharger]]s disabled the city-bot from within, rendering him unable to complete the task. {{storylink|Ghost in the Machine}}

Later, after [[Swindle (G1)|Swindle]] stole Metroplex's transforming cog, Galvatron dispatched Trypticon to destroy the defenseless city. Confident of victory, Trypticon decided to have some fun, eating a naval destroyer and menacing the passengers of a train. However, [[Silverbolt (G1)|Silverbolt]] flew into Trypticon through his mouth, firing all the while, giving the giant dinosaur [[Furmanism|the worst case of indigestion he'd ever had]]. Trypticon was forced to retreat, and he transformed back into city mode so that human repairmen recruited by the Decepticons(?!) could fix his damaged innards. As it turned out, the "repairmen" were Autobot allies [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Spike Witwicky]] and his son [[Daniel Witwicky (G1)|Daniel]], who stole Trypticon's own transforming cog, intending to use it on Metroplex. This forced the Decepticons to use Metroplex's transforming cog on Trypticon, but neither cog worked particularly well in either of the two robots, and as they battled, they wound up partially transforming, shifting and stalling at various stages between their modes. At first, Trypticon had the advantage in the battle and threw Metroplex into a lake, but eventually, [[First Aid (G1)|First Aid]] arrived to align the Decepticon cog properly within Metroplex, allowing the Autobot to transform fully. Trypticon later participated in a battle between the Autobots and Decepticons on Earth's moon, during which he and all the other "[[Primitive]]" animal-based Transformers present were telepathically contacted by the being known as the [[Oracle (G1)|Oracle]]. Trypticon served as a transport that carried the Primitives to the dead world at the center of the universe from which the summons came, but was too large to enter the cavern in which the Oracle resided, and so he stood sentinel outside while the others ventured in. As the Oracle explained that he had summoned them to battle the energy-draining creature known as [[Tornedron]], Trypticon was the first to face off with the parasite, which took the form of a dragon and sucked his energy dry. Trypticon was completed soon after and was unleashed by the Decepticons on an island utopia that they had conquered. As they watched, the sea parted to reveal Trypticon's towering form, as Megatron ordered him into battle with Metroplex. They were all very impressed and everything was going great... until Trypticon attacked. Preoccupied with keeping everyone inside him from dying, Metroplex was left to take all of Trypticon's attacks on the chin, including his Dual Plasma Cannons and Dino-Head Attack. With [[Scamper]] quickly taken out by [[Full-Tilt]], it looked as though Metroplex would be felled by a blast from the [[Brunt (G1)|Brunt tank]].

Luckily, [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] deployed [[Six-Gun]] just in time. Six-Gun took out Full-Tilt and then proceeded to turn the Brunt tank around on Trypticon, blasting the Decepticon with his own drone. The blast destroyed Trypticon's head controls, forcing [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]] to call a retreat. In battle station mode, Trypticon was later rolled into action with Sixshot at the controls. He attacked an oil refinery in order to draw out Metroplex, who was then disabled by the Decepticons' newest weapon, the electromagnetic [[Madmachine]]. The Autobot [[Headmaster (technology)|Headmasters]] soon arrived to occupy Trypticon's attention, forcing Cyclonus and Scourge to bail out of the giant. Everyone wound up dogpiling on the blackmailer, but the joke was on Cyclonus and Scourge, as it turned out it was their own superior officer, Sixshot, carrying out a secret mission from Galvatron. Trypticon tore through France before converging on Mount Fuji with the other generals, where they easily batted around the Micromasters that arrived to confront them. When the Powered Masters Dai Atlas and Sonic Bomber arrived, the Micromasters kept Trypticon busy while Dai Atlas headed underground to search for the Zodiac. Dai Atlas soon emerged victorious, and everyone began grappling over the Zodiac, at which point Trypticon unleashed a beam of Energon Z from the capsule in his mouth. Timing things just right, Dai Atlas held up the Zodiac so that the Energon Z beam would hit it, unlocking its true power. When [[Ratbat (G1)|Ratbat]] informed Decepticon Earth commander [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] of his decision to shut down the [[space bridge]] in order to conserve energy, Shockwave petitioned him for one last use of the bridge, that they might send the deadliest Decepticon on Cybertron to attack the Ark and take its energy resources for their own. Ratbat agreed, and dispatched Trypticon into the forests of [[Oregon]], where he was spotted by paleontology student [[Rachel Becker]] as he stomped his way toward the Ark. Preferring to face his enemies head-on rather than ambush them, Trypticon launched a [[sonic-scrambler mine]] at the Ark to draw a small investigative team of Autobots out, then promptly began bombarding them with firepower in his battle station mode. With more sonic-scrambler mines carpeting the cave entrance to the Ark in order to prevent any Autobot reinforcements coming to the aid of the team, the Autobots seemed doomed, until Trypticon's attention was drawn by his minion, [[Wipe-Out]]. Trypticon began life as an early Decepticon military project, the prototype iteration of which was put to use in the Decepticons' initial wave of attacks after the death of [[Sentinel Prime (G1)|Sentinel Prime]] around eight million years ago. {{storylink|The War Within issue 2|The War Within #2}}

Trypticon himself was created when the prototype was upgraded during the period of time known as the "Dark Ages", between seven-and-a-half and six-and-a-half million years ago.
