Bulkhead might seem like a daft old codger at first. And, to be fair, he kind of is. But he's also a seasoned veteran of countless battles, and is still more than capable in his role as an aerial defense soldier; precious few are his equal. His strength and firepower are backed by a long lifetime of hard knocks that have given him incredibly skill and knowledge of aerial combat strategy.

Despite his age, he's impulsive and eager to spring into battle, loving a good brawl. This is in stark contrast to his cousin and occasional teammate Quickstrike, who prefers a much more strategic attack plan to make sure battles are as short as possible.
With the Unicron Singularity forcing the evacuation of Cybertron, Bulkhead and a number of Autobot leaders were summoned to the Iron Hope, where Ultra Magnus dispatched them across the galaxy to locate the lost Autobot colony worlds. Bulkhead was given commend of the Eclipse and sent to the Gamma Kreuger region. Force of Habit
Bulkhead was a member of the Autobots who got involved in defending the Earth from the Terrorcon invasion. He joined Jetfire in Los Angeles, California, fending off the hordes of Insecticons attacking the city. Multiplicity, Pt. 2

When Slugslinger and Sharkticon raided an Autobot energon refinery, Bulkhead and friends were waiting for them. Bulkhead sent out his drone unit first to greet the invaders, and then he and Tow-Line introduced themselves as well, with laser fire. The coup-de-grace came from Omega Supreme, and the Decepticon plot was left a total failure.
**Accessories: Artillery drone, 4 missiles

: Bulkhead transforms into a large Cybertronic assault helicopter somewhat resembling an Apache looking like generation one Springer. He has a double-barreled spring-loaded missile launcher on each stabilizer wing, plus pulling the trigger on his tailfin activates a gear that spins his rotor blades. Both gimmicks are available in robot mode, though the rotor mechanism becomes a hand-held weapon.

: Bulkhead, like Landmine, cannot Powerlinx with other Autobot toys; instead, his size-class' gimmick is to Powerlinx with extra parts to form a "brute mode". In this case, Bulkhead comes with an artillery drone that features electronic light-and-sound action. This drone can attach to the underside of Bulkhead's copter mode to form a sort of thruster pack. In robot mode, it forms a large backpack, with the thrusters unfolding to become large cannon/claw arms. These arms also become legs for the drone's "walker" mode, giving it something to do when not attached to Bulkhead.

: The Japanese release of Bulkhead has a variety of minor plastic-color differences, mainly making him a little more primary-colored and turning his legs a more blueish-gray. This has the effect of making him very dimly look like Springer, who the Japanese version is named after.

: This mold was also used to make Energon Quickstrike.
After the evacuation of Cybertron due to the threat of the Unicron Singularity, some soldiers chose to stay behind. Downshift was one of these brave souls, and he guarded the tunnels leading to the inner workings of Cybertron. While on duty, Downshift was attacked by the agent Nemesis Prime and impaled to a wall by one of his harpoon missiles. After these grave injuries, Downshift was repaired and reformatted by a worker drone into a new muscle car form.

: Downshift transforms into white rally-deco sports car of undetermined (possibly fictional) model with red and green stripes as a homage to Wheeljack from generation one. He has a pair of clear-plastic guns, one a spring-loaded missile launcher, one non-firing. These can be hand-held or attached to Downshift in various ways in both modes. He can also form the top or bottom half of any silver or bronze "Powerlinx" combiner.

: For his Takara releases, the pale-olive plastic of his robot parts was replaced with a medium silver.

: Downshift's deco and sculpt is a clear homage to the Generation 1 Autobot Wheeljack. His robot mode has Wheeljack's head, a simulated car roof on his chest, and even the "Lancia" grill-feet.

: Downshift was first released as part of the final wave of "normal" Energon black-backed cards, a shipment that appears to have been very brief, mostly showing up in Kohl's department stores and Canada. This naturally caused a panic. He was later released in much greater numbers in the "Powerlinx Battles" packaging.
However, his robot mode was almost totally unchanged, save yellow plastic replacing the pale-olive.

: A KB Toys exclusive alongside Snow Cat, the pair were released during a time when Kay-Bee was having great financial difficulty, closing multiple stores nationwide. Few Kay-Bees appear to have actually received these. The bulk of these exclusives appear to have been sent instead to "Kay-Bee Toy Works" outlet stores.
: Cybertron Downshift is a green sports car that uses elements from various 1970s era pony cars. According to Hasbro's designers, the main inspirations were a 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo for the front section and a 1970 Dodge Challenger for the rear end. The car features a black hood and a texturing like vinyl roof applications from the 1960s and 70s.

: Inserting a Cyber Planet Key into a flip-up slot in his rear window activates a claw from the car's grill. This feature is also available in robot mode. He comes with two large spring-loaded missile launchers, which can be mounted on his side-panels in car mode, or be used in robot mode as hand-held blasters or mounted on his shoulders.

: While Downshift's Wheeljack-modeled head in this form is not surprising, he still retains his Lancia-grill feet. Funky.
The Cybertron version of Downshift was packaged with Cannonball, with a cardback story about Downshift hunting Cannonball's gang of pirates... in a setting that had nothing to do with a moon. Oh well. Both toys were identical to their individual releases.
Notes
* As referenced above, the Energon cartoon switched Cliffjumper and Downshift's names around for the majority of the series. More often than not, the white robot would end up being called Cliffjumper, in defiance of the toy names. It also seemed as if the two characters randomly switched voice actors from episode to episode.
: The Energon version of Prowl combines elements from the various earlier versions of vehicle-mode Prowls; he transforms into a Cybertronic (Armada Prowl) police vehicle (durhey) styled after an F-1 racer (Machine Wars Prowl), plus he has kanji found on Japanese police cars (Robots in Disguise Prowl). He is armed with a transparent blue spring-loaded missile launcher that is mounted on the side of his vehicle for storage.

: As a Deluxe-class Autobot, he can also form the top or bottom half of a Powerlinx combination with any other compatible Energon Autobot.

*Prowl with Longarm & Starscream with Zapmaster (Multi-pack, 2004)
**Accessories: Disc, 2 hand-attachments, missile launcher, missile

: Available only at Sam's Club wholesale shopping club outlets, this version of Prowl is a redeco of the Armada Red Alert mold, transforming into a Nissan Patrol rescue SUV. When a Mini-Con is attached to his hood-mounted Mini-Con port, the fenders open. Pulling back on the attached Mini-Con launches a rescue disk/missile and activates electronic lights and sounds. Similarly, when a Mini-Con is used on his emergency lights port and is pushed forward, the sirens flash and a voice chip proclaims "RED-ALERT! WOO-WOO-WOO-WOO!" (in a higher pitch than the original toy's). In robot mode, pulling back on the Mini-Con unlocks a shoulder-mounted missile/rescue grappling claw launcher, which can also be detached and held in his hand. His right leg guard contains several tools that can be attached onto his left wrist socket, while his left leg guard can be unfolded to become a Mini-Con repair bay. He comes with the Mini-Con Longarm, as well as Starscream and Zapmaster.

: This mold was also used to make Movie Inferno.

: Part of a K-Mart exclusive set with Checkpoint, Prowl was redecoed into a black vehicle with white detailing, a kind of reversal of the more "traditional" Prowl colors, looking like Bluestreak's cartoon model which makes his combination with Checkpoint look real nice.
Notes
* Prowl's instructions feature a head that is almost entirely different from the final, except for the tailpipes. It bears a striking resemblance to Blurr. This same head design was shown in a magazine preview for the Japanese version of the Energon cartoon.
:Checkpoint is an Autobot from the Energon portion of the Unicron Trilogy continuity family.

Checkpoint makes up one half of the Autobot S.W.A.T. (Special Weapons And Tactics) Team, partnered with Prowl. His job is to take the fight over energon directly to the Decepticons, crushing their strongholds and depots, a much more aggressive stance than the Autobots' normal tactics.

Fiction
Checkpoint joined the crew of the scout ship Spanner looking for Cyber Planet Keys in the Delta Draconis region of space. What they uncovered was Combatron, the nearly abandoned "Apocalypse Planet." Checkpoint uncovered a Data-Con which explained the history of the wartorn planet. Designed as an armed garrison in anticipation of the inevitable arrival of Unicron, the Cybertronian soldiers stationed there fell apart after their general, King Atlas, mysteriously vanished. In-fighting broke out, and the planet descended into madness and death.

The Autobots made contact with the last surviving soldier, Whirl, and learned that a team of Decepticons had landed on the planet, hunting for the Combatron doomsday vault of immensely powerful weapons. Checkpoint's team, alongside Whirl and his Mini-Con allies, tried to intercept the Decepticons but were too late. A swarm of Decepticlones were unleashed upon the Autobots. Checkpoint got into a fight with Buzzsaw, the two of them trading Mini-Con augmented firepower as Checkpoint powerlinked with Thunderstick, but he ultimately went down after the sniper Hardtop blew the Mini-Con right off his arm.

The Autobots were held captive, briefly, until Whirl's Mini-Cons managed to take over the Decepticon shuttle, Upstart, and Armorhide returned to the Spanner to pilot the ship straight into the bunker being held by the Decepticons. As the weapons' arsenal exploded, Checkpoint and the rest of the Autobots made off in their captured shuttle, heading out into space to hook up with the rest of their fellow soldiers. Force of Habit
