Long ago, '''Airachnid''' was with the [[Decepticon]]s, where her cruel, cold-sparked, murderous demeanor served her well. But after the [[Great Exodus]] of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], she decided to go solo. Nevertheless, she still feels a sort of kinship with her former allies, so if a [[MECH|group of humans]] attempted to, so to say, disassemble a [[Breakdown (Prime)|Decepticon]], she would take offense to it.

These days, Airachnid spends her time engaging in her new hobby: collecting [[Airachnid's specimens|endangered species]]. Well, parts of endangered species. Mostly the heads.

And if a species ''isn't'' endangered? Oh, they will be. She'll make ''sure'' of that. And she'll make sure it's a slow, painful process.

Her alt-mode is a helicopter. Also, the legs on her back allow her to move like an actual spider, and can drill through soft ground.

During the war for Cybertron, Airachnid managed to capture [[Arcee (Prime)|Arcee]] and her partner [[Tailgate (Prime)|Tailgate]]. Quickly realizing that Arcee would resist the physical torture she used, Airachnid decided to employ a simpler threat: Tell her the attack coordinates, or Tailgate dies. Arcee insisted she didn't know the coordinates, but Airachnid didn't believe her and killed Tailgate. Moments later, [[Bumblebee (Prime)|Bumblebee]] and [[Cliffjumper (Prime)|Cliffjumper]] burst into the holding room, killing the two [[Vehicon (Prime)|Vehicon]]s and rescuing Arcee. Airachnid, however, escaped.

Following the [[Great Exodus]], Airachnid concluded that the war was over, meaning she needed a new way to spend her time. She decided to hunt sentient species, then wipe them out after getting a trophy. Eventually, Airachnid crash-landed [[Airachnid's ship|her ship]] on [[Earth]]. She initially laid her optics on a lone camper, but was ambushed by Arcee. While Arcee gained the upper hand, she was distracted by her human partner, [[Jack Darby]], and Airachnid webbed her to a rock. Having learned of Cliffjumper's recent demise, Airachnid decided that making Jack her next trophy would be a delicious way to hurt Arcee before finally snuffing out her [[spark]]. She chased Jack back to her ship, but discovered too late that the human had snuck out the underside. She spotted Jack ''just'' in time to see him hurl a flaming stick into a pool of [[Energon (fuel)|energon]] that was leaking from her ship. Airachnid barely managed to escape the explosion, but she was wounded and ''really'' pissed. She managed to web the fleeing Jack to a tree, but before Airachnid could deliver the killing blow, Arcee came to the rescue and absolutely wiped the forest floor with the Decepticon. [[Starscream (Prime)|Starscream]] lies in the ''[[Nemesis (Prime)|Nemesis]]''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> lab, having taken a severe pounding from [[Megatron (Prime)|Megatron]]. His leader pays a visit, mostly to gloat over how their positions have changed. Once he leaves, Starscream rips himself free of the cables feeding him. [[Knock Out (Prime)|Knock Out]] is shocked to see Starscream up and about, but Starscream claims angrily that he feels fine and limps away. Starscream retrieves a shard of [[Dark Energon]]—the one he originally ripped from Megatron's body—from its hiding place and promises that his and Megatron's positions will be reversed.

At the [[Autobot Outpost Omega One|Autobot base]], [[Ratchet (Prime)|Ratchet]] reports that he's detected a weak but rapidly moving Dark Energon signal, which the [[Autobot]]s assume is Megatron. [[Bulkhead (Prime)|Bulkhead]] wonders if he plans to use it raise a new army of [[Terrorcon (Prime)|Terrorcons]] ([[Miko Nakadai|Miko]] seems thrilled at the prospect of zombie-cons) and [[Optimus Prime (Prime)|Optimus Prime]] notes that it's possible, given the Dark Energon signal is moving to a familiar site.

Starscream arrives at the site of [[Skyquake (Prime)|Skyquake]]'s grave, announcing that this time the fallen warrior will be his servant. Breaking off a chunk of the Dark Energon and throwing it into the cairn, Starscream plunges the rest of it into himself and feels the power flowing through him.

Optimus Prime readies the Autobots to move out, though Ratchet's surprised that he's on the team. As Miko yells words of encouragement to [[Bulkhead (Prime)|Bulkhead]], [[Jack Darby|Jack]] and [[Raf Esquivel|Raf]] observe that she's obviously up to something, since she's acting disinterested in coming along. Indeed, as the Autobots head through the [[GroundBridge]], Miko makes a break for the opening, and Jack and Raf give chase. Jack manages to grab her on the threshold, but she shakes loose and runs through, though [[Miko's phone|her cell phone]] is knocked from her belt. The three kids arrive on site just behind the Autobots and scramble up a nearby outcropping to watch the anticipated battle. The Autobots are surprised to find Starscream instead of Megatron, and he takes advantage by shooting at them and proclaiming his invulnerability. Optimus responds by shooting one of Starscream's arms off. As the Autobots close in, Starscream takes cover and shouts at Skyquake to hurry up and rise before panicking and requesting an emergency GroundBridge. The Autobots finally spot the kids when Miko shouts at Jack for making her lose her phone, just in time for [[Arcee (Prime)|Arcee]] to call from base asking where the kids are. Optimus orders her to send a GroundBridge. Ratchet is surprised when ''two'' GroundBridge portals open, but orders the kids to go in. They do so, and Starscream likewise dives through the 'Con GroundBridge, but moments later, green energy begins swirling around everywhere. Bulkhead runs to save the kids, but is knocked back from the GroundBridge portal, which then explodes.

Starscream arrives back on the ''Nemesis'' and tells the [[Vehicon (Prime)|Vehicon]] operator to keep his mouth shut. After leaving the GroundBridge room, he removes the chunk of Dark Energon from his chest.

The kids pick themselves up, as do the Autobots, but the kids quickly discover that the Autobots can't see them, and to Miko's alarm, Bulkhead steps right through her. Unaware, the Autobots speculate on what happened to the kids. Raf works out that he, Jack and Miko are in a sort of alternate dimension he calls a [[Shadowzone (dimension)|shadowzone]]. Optimus observes that Skyquake's grave is empty and requests a GroundBridge from Arcee. The kids spot Skyquake—now a Dark Energon zombie—heading towards the Autobots. Their cries of warning go unheard, but Skyquake's strike passes right through Bulkhead. The kids rapidly realize that Skyquake is in the same dimension as they are, and they and run for it. Raf trips and is carried to safety by Jack, but has lost his glasses. Miko makes an ill-advised recovery of the spectacles, and they continue their flight.

The Autobots are at a loss to locate the kids until [[Bumblebee (Prime)|Bumblebee]] suggests calling them. Bulkhead rings Miko, only to discover her lost cellphone sitting on the floor in the Autobot base. Arcee rings Jack, and in the shadowzone, his phone rings, but there's too much interference for him and Arcee to communicate. The kids hit on the idea of sending a text message to Miko's phone but are forced to run as Skyquake finds them. Miko is just realizing that they've gone in a circle when they literally run into Starscream's lost arm.

Knock Out examines Starscream, who covers for his lost arm by saying it just fell off. The medic tries unsuccessfully to interest him in a replacement upgrade arm.

Meanwhile, the kids use Starscream's arm to fire a missile at Skyquake. They manage to blast Skyquake's arm off, but it promptly animates and starts charging towards them at high speed. The kids start running once again.

At base, Bulkhead notices that Miko's phone is flashing, and the Autobots finally get the kids' message. Ratchet sets about trying to locate where they are.

Starscream's piece of Dark Energon starts pulsing, which he takes to mean that Skyquake has risen. He tells Knock Out, returning with a new arm, that he's going to go and retrieve his old arm.

Ratchet pinpoints the kids to the location of Skyquake's grave and starts working on a way to return them to the normal dimension.

The kids find themselves back at Starscream's arm and are confronted by Starscream himself, come to find Skyquake. Luckily, he can't see them, but they're forced to run toward him when Skyquake's arm appears. A GroundBridge portal opens in front of them, and they run through at the last moment. Starscream is startled by the three humans running past, but then Skyquake's arm follows them through the portal and grabs Starscream's head. He has barely shaken the thing loose when Optimus, Bulkhead and Arcee arrive, and he has to request another emergency GroundBridge.

Back at base, Miko takes responsibility for the whole venture, much to Jack's surprise, but the Autobots decide she's been through enough. Bulkhead regrets she didn't get to take any pictures, but Miko asserts that the mental image of zombie Skyquake will be enough.

Knock Out performs more repairs on Starscream and enquires whether he retrieved his arm. Back in the shadowzone, Skyquake briefly tries Starscream's arm on for size before tossing it away.

To make matters worse, he had to listen to [[Weirdwolf]]. Even under Bug Bite's control, he threatened bodily harm if Weirdwolf didn't shut up.

In the early days of the Decepticon rebellion, Thundercracker and [[Skywarp (G1)|Skywarp]] both faced the powerful protectors of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron's]] cities, the [[Guardian Robots]]. According to Thundercracker, he was often not very successful. {{storylink|War Dawn}}

Thundercracker was one of [[Megatron (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Megatron's]] elite warriors, participating in the attack on the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]] and joining the rest of the Earth-bound Transformers in their several-million-year nap under an inactive volcano. He awoke when the rest of the Decepticons did, and took part in their attempts to gather [[Energon (fuel)|energon]] and escape the planet [[Earth]], which he loathed for being too "flat". It was he and [[Reflector (G1)|Reflector]] who spotted the first "potential Autobot", when in fact they had discovered the planet's native inhabitants, two [[human]]s, in a non-sentient vehicle. {{storylink|More than Meets the Eye, Part 1}}

Megatron took the Decepticons to [[Sherman Dam]], a major source of energy. The Autobots, upon discovering their plot, soon arrived to prevent their ambition from becoming reality. Thundercracker and Skywarp fought off [[Mirage (G1)|Mirage]] and [[Cliffjumper (G1)|Cliffjumper]], only for Mirage to make a recovery and send the two Seekers off the bridge they were standing on. They were at least able to recover in time to escape with the rest of the group once Megatron had knocked Optimus Prime into the rushing river nearby. Though Thundercracker assisted in filling the energon cubes, [[Starscream (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Starscream]] wasted a huge amount of energon testing it with a cannon. The Decepticons were then forced to make two stops: one at the [[Ruby Crystal Mines of Burma]], and another hunting for rocket fuel. Thundercracker and a handful of [[generic]]s painted like him were among the strike force headed for the Crystal Mines. While there, he pushed a cart of these gems with Skywarp, talking to Skywarp about his dislike for Earth, something Skywarp agreed with. They just barely avoided noticing [[Bumblebee (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Bumblebee]] and his ally [[Sparkplug Witwicky]], who had come to investigate. The two set a bomb, but ran into the two Seekers on their way back out. Thundercracker attacked them until they were on the ground, Skywarp proposing that they give them as a present to Megatron. The bomb went off almost immediately afterward, burying the Decepticons and their enemies, so this did not come to be. {{storylink|More than Meets the Eye, Part 2}}

Both parties managed to escape safely, and Thundercracker went with the other Decepticons (save for Megatron) to a [[Cape Carlson|rocket fuel base]], where Thundercracker made his mark by destroying a couple of tanks. The Autobots arrived to stop them, with Thundercracker, Skywarp, and Laserbeak unleashing an aerial assault upon Cliffjumper and Wheeljack. During the brawl, Megatron called Thundercracker and the other troops to the [[Victory (G1)|space cruiser]] to return to Cybertron. However, a surprise attack from Mirage grounded their plans, literally and metaphorically. {{storylink|More than Meets the Eye, Part 3}}

This would not be the end of the Decepticons, however. The crashed Victory was rebuilt into a fortress, from which they made another assault looking for energon. Thundercracker participated in many other attacks following this, also witnessing Megatron's disappearance in a [[space bridge]] accident, {{storylink|Transport to Oblivion}} and being part of the attack on a hydroelectric power generator along with Soundwave and Starscream, who declared himself leader in Megatron's absence. Though a group of Autobots came to stop them, Thundercracker bashed the charging Cliffjumper with a pillar from the building. The energon cubes they were making were destroyed, and Soundwave suggested that the squad should retreat. As they escaped, Thundercracker criticized Starscream's leader capabilities, going on to praise Megatron when he revealed himself to have survived. Starscream took his squad (and Skywarp) to an airplane factory for spare parts, but while Thundercracker was having his wings reattached, Bluestreak and Prowl crashed the party. The Seekers shot at the Autobots, but [[Chip Chase]] took control of the injured Prowl and had him unleash a spectacular assault forcing Starscream's squad to escape. However, they made a quick stop at Chip's house and abducted him, taking him to [[Doctor Alcazar|Dr. Alcazar]]'s lab where the other Decepticons were. They extracted the antimatter formula from his brain, making them stronger. Thundercracker was unable to kill the now-useless Chip, as Autobots interrupted and took him back. The next morning, after leaving the lab, [[Sunstreaker (G1)|Sunstreaker]] used his [[jet judo]] on the antimatter-powered Thundercracker, but Starscream thwarted this plan. Thundercracker was then ordered to give Megatron the antimatter cubes, transforming him into "the most powerful weapon of all". This plan was a failure, and the Decepticons had no choice but to get away. {{storylink|Roll for It}}

Thundercracker again joined his fellow Seekers in raiding a factory for energy and heavily damaging Optimus Prime, who had been called in by Chip. When more Autobots showed up, Megatron ordered the Seekers to escape with the energon cubes rather than fighting them. At the end of the day, Thundercracker participated in a battle in front of the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]], where he was punched down by [[Huffer (G1)|Huffer]] immediately as he landed. When Megatron suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of a recovered Optimus Prime, Starscream smugly instructed everybody to take Megatron back for repairs. {{storylink|Divide and Conquer}} Following this, Thundercracker witnessed the rebirth of Starscream's former colleague [[Jetfire (G1)|Skyfire]] {{storylink|Fire in the Sky}} and was shot down by [[Slag (G1)|Slag]] during a mission at the [[Great Falls]]. {{storylink|S.O.S. One of the few things he seemed to loathe even more than the world he was stranded on was the attitude of his commander, [[Starscream (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Starscream]]. Thundercracker often started fights with the [[Air Commander]], usually over whether or not Megatron's latest plan was a waste of time (Thundercracker took Megatron's side). At one point, Thundercracker's distaste for "that geeky Starscream" became so strong that he was willing to let Skyfire destroy one of the Decepticons' greatest weapons, just in the hopes that Starscream would get blamed for it! {{storylink|Fire on the Mountain}} Despite these brushes with treachery, however, Thundercracker just never had it in him to do anything more than complain about his fellow Decepticons.

Thundercracker and the other Seekers helped haul [[Meteorini Chipperoni|an unstable meteor]] back for the Decepticons, {{storylink|War of the Dinobots}} and the Seekers next attacked a solar plant located in [[India]] as a diversion so Megatron could continue his plan. When Skywarp and Starscream began arguing over the effectiveness of the plan, Thundercracker merely kept his mouth shut. The Autobots came to rescue Sparkplug, going to the underwater base to do so. During this underwater battle, Thundercracker sent a missile at Bumblebee, only for Bumblebee to direct it back at him. He was next doing some work on a large space bridge for Megatron, one that would bring Cybertron into Earth's orbit and create devastating weather. {{storylink|The Ultimate Doom, Part 1}} Starscream ordered Thundercracker to use his flamethrower against the Autobots, and despite Thundercracker's protests saying that the wind is too strong, Starscream wouldn't give in. Thundercracker turned out to be correct, and his fire ended up scorching to two Seekers instead, something [[Jazz (G1)|Jazz]] and [[Trailbreaker (G1)|Trailbreaker]] found humourous. {{storylink|The Ultimate Doom, Part 2}} When the other Decepticons noticed that Megatron had left for Cybertron by himself, Thundercracker was in hot pursuit. {{storylink|The Ultimate Doom, Part 3}} Thundercracker was the straight man when Skywarp, Rumble, and [[Frenzy (G1)|Frenzy]] were bickering when they should have been working. Though he was as surprised as everybody else when Megatron arrived, perfectly healthy, to shut everybody up, Thundercracker was willing to go with Megatron when he discovered Starscream and [[Doctor Arkeville|Dr. Arkeville]]'s plot. {{storylink|Countdown to Extinction (episode)|Countdown to Extinction}}

Megatron took [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] and Thundercracker to [[Bali]] after [[Insecticon (G1)|giant insects]] were reported in the area. When [[Ravage (G1)|Ravage]] showed them to a Decepticon escape pod disguised as a hollow rock, Thundercracker deduced that the giant insects were Decepticons who came to Earth and scanned insects as [[alternate mode]]s. This group met up with the Insecticons, and [[Shrapnel (G1)|Shrapnel]] requested that they help defeat the group of Autobots challenging them, to which they agreed. When reinforcement Autobots came in, Megatron ordered the Decepticons (Insecticons included) to head for the oil refinery to rest up. The Insecticons separated, with the rest going to the refinery, where Thundercracker poured oil from the pipes into Soundwave's energon cubes, and brought more cubes when Rumble requested them. [[Jetfire (G1)|A visitor]] soon showed up, and Thundercracker joined in giving him a "warm welcome". Other Autobots arrived, with Brawn, Wheeljack and Optimus Prime being forced to dive into the water to avoid a "Shrapnel grenade". Thundercracker used his flamethrower on the trio of Autobots, who avoided it and retaliated by swimming underwater and then pushing up the dock Thundercracker was standing on, throwing him into his own inferno. He retreated with the rest of his group to follow the fleeing Insecticons. {{storylink|A Plague of Insecticons}}

Megatron used the power chip rectifiers taken from the other Decepticons in his one-on-one battle against Optimus Prime. Thundercracker contributed his, allowing Megatron to use ear-splitting sonic booms. After the battle, the Autobots went back to base so Optimus could recover, where they discovered the Decepticons' plan. After distracting and threatening them with a hologram, the Autobots shot at their enemies until they fell down the crevice, into the lava below. {{storylink|Heavy Metal War}}

Thundercracker obviously survived his fall with the rest of his group, as he was around for attacks on Air Force rocket bases, and on the hunt for [[Autobot X]], {{storylink|Autobot Spike}} and was with the other Decepticons in Africa, but at the end of the day, he was sent flying into a tree by Ratchet. When the solar needle situation became dire, causing the sun to come close to self-destruction, Thundercracker was smart enough to fly away, the first Decepticon to do so. {{storylink|Changing Gears}} He was also part of an aerial strike force bombarding the Autobots as they attempted to recover Optimus Prime's right arm from the Decepticons' fortress in "[[New Cybertron]]". {{storylink|City of Steel}} Along with the other Seekers, Thundercracker attacked the outside of the Ark as a diversion so Megatron could insert [[Personality destabilizer device|a device]] in the Ark's recharging chamber that would turn the Autobots evil. Notably, Thundercracker's blasts created a landslide that stopped [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]] in his tracks. He was later boarding a rocket that would hopefully take the Decepticons back to Cybertron, but the Autobots, who had become good again, damaged the fuel tanks and forced the Decepticons to jump ship. {{storylink|Attack of the Autobots}} Thundercracker was seen with the other Decepticons, shooting at Optimus Prime when he came for their electro-cells, {{storylink|Traitor}} and was among those who came to steal Wheeljack's [[Wheeljack Instant Immobilizer|Immobilizer]]. {{storylink|The Immobilizer}} When the Autobots became trapped in their vehicle modes thanks to the transfixatron, Thundercracker blasted Optimus Prime and Ironhide and overheated them. He also helped Starscream bring out the Decepticon body shell, and then attempted (and failed) to kill [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|an Earthcrawler with an overdue termination]]. {{storylink|The Autobot Run}} After Soundwave's discovery of [[Sub-Atlantica|an underwater city]], Thundercracker and the other Decepticons went to go plunder it for energy. When they discovered [[Nergill|a new ally]], Thundercracker worked on some technology that would hopefully raise his submerged city. Although he was skeptical about working with them, he had to go along anyway as part of a larger plan. He was then among the Seekers who menaced a squad of Autobots when they came to check out the situation. When Sub-Atlantica had risen to the water's surface and floated towards [[Washington, D.C.]], Thundercracker entered the city with his fellow Decepticons. Though he and Skywarp threatened [[Hound (G1)|Hound]] and Prowl from above, Brawn held Thundercracker with a hooked rope so Optimus Prime could blast him out of the sky. {{storylink|Atlantis, Arise!}}

The three Seekers tore the roof off the building where [[Doctor Fujiyama the Famous Scientist|Dr. Fujiyama, the famous scientist]] unveiled his new robot [[Nightbird (G1)|Nightbird]], with Thundercracker and Starscream promptly transporting Nightbird to the Decepticons' temporary base. Later, Megatron considered replacing Starscream with the now-reprogrammed Nightbird. Starscream threw a fit and Megatron told Thundercracker and Skywarp to hold him back before Soundwave and Bombshell trapped him in a force field. Megatron led the Decepticons (minus Starscream) to retrieve Nightbird's World Energy Chip, but Starscream escaped and shot her with his [[null-ray]] in yet another act of treachery. Megatron sent the other Decepticons to catch the traitor, allowing the Autobots to collect it. {{storylink|Enter the Nightbird}}

When the Autobots were investigating a mysterious source of energy in a crevice, the Seekers attacked Optimus Prime. Thundercracker charged at Optimus, only to be grabbed and thrown to the ground. Much later, as part of a ploy by Megatron, Thundercracker was surprised to hear [[Starscream clone (G1)|"Starscream"]] announce for everybody to hold their fire, as he had [[Gears (G1)|an Autobot]] in his very hands and could kill him. Starscream shut him up by repeating the order. But when Starscream explained his plan to fight [[Optimus Prime clone|"Optimus Prime"]], Thundercracker went along with it and was the one who announced the start of the match. {{storylink|A Prime Problem}} On a later mission, he ambushed the Autobots from above, only to be swatted away by an Autobot-controlled Devastator. {{storylink|The Core}} He was subsequently around at the mission to [[Nova Power Plant]], firing at the Autobots and a group of helicopter-piloting humans. At [[Iron Mountain]], the Insecticons managed to enslave Thundercracker and the other Seekers. However, when the now enormous-sized Shrapnel exploded, it also deactivated the [[cerebro-shell]]s that had taken over the Seekers, and they were returned to normal. {{storylink|The Insecticon Syndrome}} When Laserbeak reported [[Dinobot Island (G1)|a strange, prehistoric island]] chock-full of energon sources to Megatron, he brought a team of Decepticons with him, Thundercracker helping to fill up the energon cubes. {{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 1}} Thundercracker also assisted in repelling both Autobots on the island and [[Dinosaur|the island's monsters]], only to be run over by a stampede. {{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 2}} Next, he and the other jets came to a ravine to get a few shots in at the Autobots. This failed when [[Smokescreen (G1)|Smokescreen]] used his eponymous ability to blind them. {{storylink|Auto Berserk}}

He was also around to assist the Decepticons in recovering the wreck of the Nemesis, which had crashed in South America. He also got completely smashed when the Decepticons went on an energon binge. {{storylink|Microbots}} He also disguised himself as an Autobot as part of a Decepticon plan to frame the Autobots. When the plan worked, he and the others witnessed the Autobots' banishment from Earth. {{storylink|Megatron's Master Plan, Part 1}} Thundercracker and Skywarp supervised the humans filling up energon cubes at a power plant, and he later took part in attacking a squad of fighter jets that had come for the Decepticons, only for them to be overwhelmed by the Autobots, who had returned from their banishment. {{storylink|Megatron's Master Plan, Part 2}}

When Spike, Carly, and Bumblebee went to the airport to pick up Sparkplug, Spike thought it was suspicious that brightly coloured military jets were at a commercial location such as theirs. Surely enough, they turned out to be Thundercracker and [[Thrust (G1)|Thrust]], and the hangar that they flew into was [[Hanger|a new Decepticon base]]. However, the Dinobots showed up to stop them, and [[Snarl (G1)|Snarl]] dispatched the Seekers by tripping them with barrels. Next, [[Swoop (G1)|Swoop]] bombed Thundercracker and Thrust, causing them to crash into the base and destroy it. Slag then sent the two of them flying into an airplane, Thundercracker cushioning Thrust's fall. He got better, and later helped fill energon cubes, and by shooting Mirage, asserted to him that he was not, in fact, invisible. However, Thundercracker did not laugh for long, as his Cybertonium deteriorated and rendered him incapable of transformation. {{storylink|Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 1}}

Thundercracker, Starscream, and Megatron went to go steal [[Professor Haley]]'s [[Voltronic Galaxer]], after which they then boarded Astrotrain with the device and headed to the moon. After capturing [[Cosmos (G1)|a pair]] [[Blaster (G1)|of intruders]], Megatron ordered Starscream and Thundercracker to return to Earth while the galaxer did its work interrupting Earth's radiowaves. As Optimus Prime was directing traffic at an airport, Thundercracker and Starscream unleashed a surprise assault that damaged [[Powerglide (G1)|Powerglide]] and Prime. {{storylink|Blaster Blues}} When Starscream tackled Megatron after returning from Camelot, Thundercracker arrived to see what was going on. {{storylink|A Decepticon Raider in King Arthur's Court}}

Thundercracker and Skywarp also worked as guards for the Decepticons, ensuring that [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]] and [[Seaspray (G1)|Seaspray]] didn't attempt to attack those who had captured them. When a lagoon full of [[electrum]] was discovered, Thundercracker and the other Decepticons took a dive and became invulnerable, showing off their power against the Autobots. He also came on the quest to topple Omega Supreme, but when he and Skywarp went to go retrieve [[Beachcomber (G1)|a prisoner]] at the base, he was defeated. The Decepticons attempted to attack the now electrum-powered Autobots at the lagoon, but their electrum began to wear off and Thundercracker was shot down and they were forced to retreat. {{storylink|The Golden Lagoon}} Thundercracker assisted in guarding the Decepticons' base in the Pine Barrens, {{storylink|Make Tracks}} and came to a valley that was full of [[Morphobot]]s. He went into hiding when an Autobot convoy arrived, and didn't do much else except retreat. {{storylink|Quest for Survival}}

When Astrotrain declared himself leader of the Decepticons, Thundercracker snarked at the idea, and it certainly didn't help when Astrotrain's "troops" got themselves in a mess. He barely escaped with his fellow jets when one of the troops accidentally created a flood. He later made a bet with Thrust and Ramjet (four energon cubes!) over whether or not Megatron will prevail over the rebellious Triple Changers and Devastator. {{storylink|Triple Takeover}}

Starscream, Skywarp and Thundercracker had held several humans hostage, so it was only natural they would find the [[Aerialbot (G1)|Aerialbots]] on their tails. Thundercracker got in a dogfight with [[Fireflight (G1)|Fireflight]] and [[Slingshot]], and he emerged as the loser, returning to Cybertron for repairs. On Cybertron, the three Seekers caught up with the Aerialbots again, but they were calmed when [[Air Raid (G1)|Air Raid]] announced that he simply wanted to talk. Starscream saw this as an opportunity to trick the Aerialbots, but the remaining Autobots discovered their plan. The Seekers tried to ward them off, but Ironhide crashed into them. Eventually, the Decepticons discovered a guardian robot from Cybertron's past, which Thundercracker recalled as "giving them a pounding in the old days". When the Autobots repaired the time machine that had sent the Aerialbots to the past, the Decepticons attacked them with a guardian robot. When it was destroyed by [[Superion (G1)|Superion]], they retreated. {{storylink|War Dawn}} Thundercracker and Skywarp were guarding a space bridge when Starscream flew in and requested to go to Cybertron. The two of them refused to let anybody through without proper authorization, leading Starscream to aim his gun directly in Skywarp's face. They reluctantly let him through. Thundercracker took part in the assault on the traitorous Starscream and his warriors, the [[Combaticon (G1)|Combaticons]]. {{storylink|Starscream's Brigade}}

He and Dirge were instructed by Megatron to transport some energon cubes to the space bridge. He was then sent to Cybertron via space bridge with the other Decepticons and the Autobots, who had temporarily made an alliance in order to stop Starscream. {{storylink|The Revenge of Bruticus}} Finally, he took part attacking the Ark and [[Defensor (G1)|Defensor]]. {{storylink|B.O.T. (episode)|B.O.T.}}

Thundercracker was present for [[Battle of Autobot City|the Decepticon assault]] on [[Autobot City]] in 2005, and was among the Decepticons gunned down by Optimus Prime. After the battle, Astrotrain transported the Decepticons away, but requested that some dead weight should be jettisoned. The injured Thundercracker, along with Skywarp and the Insecticons, were tossed out of Astrotrain following a decidedly stacked vote.

That was not, however, entirely the end of Thundercracker's story. [[Unicron]] was waiting in space for a chance like this, and when the newly reborn [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]] needed some new troops to command, Thundercracker was among the old Decepticons used as raw materials. His body was used to create [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]]. {{storylink|The Transformers: The Movie}}

Later [[Octane]] would show concern when he ran into a [[Decepticon Crypt]] to hide from Cyclonus, the Sweeps and Scourge and found [[:Image:ThundercrackerCryptMarker1.jpg|a statue of Thundercracker]] there. He first appeared in the story of [[Johnny]], a member of [[S.T.A.R.S.]] who spotted Thundercracker draining the energy from the boy's town. One of the first Decepticons recruited by Megatron. Early in Megatron's scheming, Thundercracker was sent to Sector Zero-Six with Skywarp and Starscream. However, Megatron did not intend for them to be pit fighters, but his new warriors. After being given [[weapons systems]] by [[Hook (G1)|Hook]], the Seekers went and kidnapped [[Decimus|Senator Decimus]], who was to be executed at Megatron's recruitment rally. However, the [[Sentinel Prime (G1)|Sentinel Prime]] and the Autobots arrived and arrested the whole of them. {{storylink|Megatron Origin issue 3}} After Starscream killed the [[Kaon Council]] and liberated them, Megatron launched his new "Decepticons" in an "Everything burns" offensive on Kaon. He was known to the Autobots as a professional soldier, in contrast to the likes of the Battlechargers.

He, [[Runabout]] and [[Runamuck (G1)|Runamuck]] were assigned by [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] to intercept the human [[Stoker]] and retrieve his [[SM-40]] palmtop PC, containing data on their [[Nebraska]] operation. The team caught up with and killed Stoker outside Phoenix, AZ, but the [[SM-40]] was missing. Thundercracker tracked the device to [[Hunter O'Nion]] and [[Verity Carlo]], but was driven off by [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]], {{storylink|Infiltration issue 0}} who managed to temporarily lose him and the two [[Battlecharger|Battlechargers]]. After picking Ratchet up again, Thundercracker was later shot down by [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]], [[Sunstreaker (G1)|Sunstreaker]] and [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]]. {{storylink|Infiltration issue 2}} When Megatron arrived on Earth to take command of Starscream's infiltration team, Thundercracker, along with the other Decepticons, were unwilling to stand against him when the Decepticon leader ordered them to stand down. {{storylink|Infiltration issue 6}}

The Psycho-Prism emitted an aggression wave that acted on humans, increasing international tensions in the area. After their return the Decepticon array was being besieged by Autobots and [[Avengers]]. Along with the other Decepticons (except [[Ramjet (G1)|Ramjet]]), Thundercraker powered-up with the captured [[Spider-Man]]'s super powers as part of [[mirror response mode]]. Sometime after that (we think), Thundercracker was on Cybertron watching the experiments to create [[Insecticon (G1)|Insecticons]]. He was outraged by the existence of the [[Insecticon swarm|Swarm]], freakish monsters created as a side-effect, and demanded Megatron euthanised them rather than allowing fellow Decepticons to endure such torturous existence. A year on from the Reaper battle, Thundercracker was part of the Decepticon attack on [[New York City]]. Thundercracker came to the aid of Skywarp when the latter was being threatened by [[Bombshell (G1)|Bombshell]]. While Skywarp enjoyed working with his pal Thundercracker again, he also noted that Thundercracker hadn't actually participated in any of the fighting since the initial strike. Thundercracker for his part looked about as depressed as a robot CAN look, suggesting he was unhappy about the invasion plan, or at least the gratuitous death and destruction some of the others had caused. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 6}} When Starscream betrayed Megatron and sent the Insecticons and [[Constructicon (G1)|Constructicons]] to attack him, Thundercracker merely stood back and watched. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 10}} He was later seen fighting back against human jets sent from [[Europe]]. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 11}}

When Megatron ordered [[Octane|Tankor]] to destroy New York City using a nuclear bomb, Thundercracker volunteered himself to redirect it. When questioned, he said that in his opinion, the Decepticons had lost their way, and the mass slaughter of unworthy foes was dishonorable. He succeeded in redirecting the bomb, but was then confronted by a furious Skywarp, who was outraged at the idea of a Seeker "betrayer" and, despite Thundercracker's attempts to explain his position, blasted him point-blank in the head. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 12}}

Thundercracker survived, albeit heavily injured and incapable of traveling far. As he made his way to a ruined New York skyscraper which human cleanup crews likely wouldn't reach for months, he reflected on how life on Earth was always changing and always found a way to survive. He eventually managed to construct a distress beacon, and as he waited for his fellow Decepticons to find him, he also got a [[television]] working. For the next two and a half years, Thundercracker spent his time watching human programs and growing increasingly fascinated with their ever-changing world and society. Eventually, he was found by a ragtag team of 'cons left behind on the planet, who repaired him and hoped that he, as an elite Seeker, would lead them. While Thundercracker used to laugh at it, he now saw the beauty of Earth, where every act of destruction was also an act of creation. Little did he know, however, that by buying the gun he had become a pawn in a Decepticon plot. The weapon contained a small piece of [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]]'s consciousness, which connected to other machines in Joe's house and began speaking to him when nobody else was around, urging him to use the gun. Joe initially unplugged the devices, but his curiousity quickly got the better of him, and he began listening to the voice. Megatron fed him lies that he was a scientist from another planet which had been destroyed by the Transformers, and that Earth was their next target. By the time humanity learned that the [[Autobot]]s had been allied with the US government for some time, Joe had completely fallen for Megatron's lies. Following the voice's instructions, he traveled to the [[Skywatch]] base where [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]] was telling rioting humans that the Autobots had come in peace. After Megatron deposed Bludgeon and reassumed control of the Decepticons, Soundwave once again served Megatron as a close adviser. One of his first acts was to ask, "Why revive Starscream?". Megatron shared Soundwave's concerns, and assured him the on-again-off-again traitor would be dealt with once Megatron had regrown his army. {{storylink|Tales of Earth Part Three}}

Megatron immediately drew his Decepticons to the moon of [[Tykos]] to violently acquire [[Rheanimum]] from the natives. However, things soured when Soundwave received a distress call from [[Skullgrin]]. In moments, [[Jhiaxus (G2)|Jhiaxus]]'s [[Cybertronian (faction)|Cybertronian Empire]] was upon them. After several casualties, and Megatron missing in action, Soundwave led a party to discover if Megatron had survived and recover him if he had; when Mindwipe expressed doubts about the mission, Soundwave told him to shut up. After the arrival of the mysterious Decepticon [[Landquake (Timelines)|Landquake]], Soundwave ran a neural scan on the Transformer to confirm his story of alternate dimensions and [[Unicron]] singularities. Soundwave confirmed that, at the very least, Landquake believed he was telling the truth. The Decepticons took off aboard Astrotrain to explore a new energy signature in the Southern Hemisphere...one which materialized at the same time as Landquake and possessed a similar resonance pattern. {{storylink|Crossing Over: Part 2}} In South America, Soundwave engaged [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]]'s troops alongside Megatron and [[Devastator (G1)|Devastator]] on the ground. Later, when interrogated by Shockwave, a single, silent look from Soundwave stopped [[Frenzy (G1)|Frenzy]] and [[Rumble (G1)|Rumble]] from revealing that Starscream was behind Megatron's disappearance during their voyage to Cybertron. As the battle between the Autobots and Shockwave's forces intensified, Soundwave followed Starscream's lead without a word, and helped him prepare for a return trip to Earth aboard [[Sky Lynx (G1)|Sky Lynx]]. Starscream rewarded him by giving him a [[Ratbat (G1)|present]]. Soundwave silently approved.

Joe vs. the Transformers #2}} While Destro liked what he saw, he wanted to run a test, and personally operated Soundwave's controls during an attack on the [[SPS Research Facility]].

Meanwhile, a picture of Soundwave was secretly sent out to hundreds of email boxes. The message turned out to be a [[Defense Matrix|secret signal]] from Optimus Prime, which alerted [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] and Bumblebee to the location of Cobra's secret base where the rest of the Transformers were being held. When [[Bumper (G1)|two]] [[Fastback (G1)|Autobots]] were discovered listening in on their conversation, Soundwave dispatched [[Ravage (G1)|Ravage]], [[Buzzsaw (G1)|Buzzsaw]], and [[Laserbeak (G1)|Laserbeak]] to capture them. As the Decepticon leader did not fully trust Bludgeon, Megatron also assigned Soundwave to spy on him. Soundwave followed Bludgeon and his team as they left for Earth in 1984 and established a base within [[Mount St. Helens]], eventually discovering that they intended to resurrect [[Thunderwing (G1)|Thunderwing]]. Though Soundwave tried to stop them, [[Iguanus (G1)|Iguanus]] used an experimental cannon from Shockwave's arsenal to lock him in his alt mode while they instigated a volcanic eruption. Soundwave was purchased by a human teenager named [[Jimmy (young boy)|Jimmy]] and taken to his home. Soundwave reported that the humans had sent a sizable ground force after the Decepticons. Following Megatron's orders, he released [[Frenzy (G1)|Frenzy]] and set him loose on the humans. Megatron had Soundwave send out a fake Autobot SOS transmission in an attempt to trick the Autobots into leaving their base. The plan was a success and Optimus Prime and his crew were lured out. When the Autobots realized that they had been deceived, Megatron sent a message through Soundwave's transmitter, gloating how he had tricked Prime and announced that his crew was going to steal the energon the Autobots had on their shuttle. When Megatron had finished his message, Soundwave returned to base. On the way back to their shuttle, the Autobots encountered Soundwave again, this time leading a hoard of Decepticon troops, and fought them. Despite his best efforts, Soundwave was overwhelmed and left to rejoin Megatron. Later, Soundwave fought the Autobots again while they were dealing with another swarm of enemies. He lost again, and left to fight another day.

Later on, Soundwave teamed up with his future self, Soundblaster, and with [[Full-Tilt]] as the final defense against the Autobots before they reached Megatron and Galvatron. When the Autobots arrived, Soundblaster started by expressed [[dull surprise]] at how the Autobots managed to survive up until the current point. Soundwave continued, warning the Autobots that he would not let them stand in Megatron's way. Both present and future versions of the Communications Officer we all know and love put the best fight they could, but even with Full-Tilt's help, the Autobots overpowered them.

====Decepticon story====
When the Decepticons lost all contact with a team they had sent to investigate a space-time warp and UFOs they had detected on the planet Zel Samine; Megatron decided to investigate and sent Soundwave and Starscream to the planet on a shuttle with a space bridge on-board, planning to get to Zel later by using that space bridge. Upon entering the planet, the shuttle was damaged and Soundwave hid it inside a cave. Once that was done, Soundwave prepared for Megatron's arrival through the space bridge. As Soundwave checked the coordinates of the space bridge, he had to listen to Starscream's whining. Even when he told the Air Commander that the space bridge should work despite there having been instabilities in the route, it did nothing but cause Starscream to whine some more. When Starscream asked Soundwave about the capabilities of the space bridge inside of a cave, Soundwave responded that he set up a relay device outside, taking care of any problems. At Starscream's request, Soundwave activated the Space Bridge; but despite Soundwave's preparations, the space bridge still exploded. Surveying what remained of the space bridge, the Communications Officer stated that it was broken and needed repairs. When Starscream asked what happened to Megatron, who was being transported when the space bridge blew up; Soundwave explained that the two points in the space bridge's transmission became offset, hypothesizing that Megatron was teleported to another location. After getting an estimation of Megatron's location, Soundwave went with Starscream to find their leader.

Once they reached the expected location, Soundwave was disappointed to see that Megatron was nowhere to be found. He became even more worried when Starscream hypothesized that Megatron was blown up when the space bridge malfunctioned, but he admitted that was a possibility. Fortunately, Soundwave's hopes were answered when Megatron appeared out of nowhere and blasted Starscream right when the Air Commander declared himself to be the new Decepticon leader. Soundwave announced that he was pleased to see that Megatron was unharmed and then apologized for Megatron's bumpy ride on the space bridge, explaining that it was unstable on Zel. He continued to explain that the ship they used to get to Zel was damaged and needed repairs. Luckily for Soundwave, Megatron decided to brush off the bad news for later. Furthermore, Megatron announced that he found something important when he arrived, gaining Soundwave's interest. Asking what it was, Soundwave learned that Megatron had found a crashed Autobot ship in the distance. Soundwave was then used to contact the Autobots, setting up a two-way connection between the two factions. After threatening the Autobots that he was coming to steal the energon from their shuttle, Megatron terminated the connection. Soundwave listened quietly as Megatron explaining his reasoning for announcing his attack, only speaking up to agree with his leader when he badmouthed the Autobots. Then, after Megatron poked fun at Starscream, Soundwave then accompanied Megatron and Starscream in advancing on the Autobot ship.

After fighting three hoards of Autobot troops, standing by his leader's side as he and Wheeljack trash-talked each other, assisting Megatron in dealing with Wheeljack's troops and then handing the inventor's skidplate to him, navigating through a minefield, brawling with three more hoards of Autobots, Soundwave and the Decepticons finally made it to the Autobot ship, with only Optimus Prime and one more swarm of his troops to deal with. Once again, Soundwave silently observed Megatron and Optimus' talk-before-a-fight routine before leaping into the battle at his leader's command. Soundwave trashed as many Autobots as he could, but before Optimus could be thoroughly beaten, the Autobot leader decided to flee. This left the Decepticons free to steal whatever energon they could from the downed Autobot shuttle.

Back at the Decepticon ship, Soundwave began to connect the dots between the crashing of the Decepticon's ship and the malfunctioning of the space bridge and began making a study of Zel Samine, the results of which troubled him. Eventually, the Communications Officer found himself being asked on his opinion on the UFOs by his leader. Soundwave explained about how the UFOs appeared right after the anomaly in space and time they detected, and that they landed on Zel Samine. Admitting that he was baffled, Soundwave continued to share that he believed that it was no coincidence how the Decepticons managed to loose contact with the troops who were sent to investigate the incidents. This lead Megatron to believe that the incidents were caused by some kind of new secret Autobot weapon. Then Megatron saw that Soundwave was troubled (by the results of his study of Zel Samine. When demanded to share his knowledge, Soundwave asked his leader if he felt strange since arriving on Zel. Explaining, Soundwave said that he believed that the incidents with the shuttle and the space bridges were connected, and that he decided to study the planet. When Megatron admitted that he was indeed feeling strange since coming to Zel and asked Soundwave for what he found out, Soundwave gave the details of his discoveries:

Zel's sun, Paradius, was dangerous to Transformers, as it emitted electromagnetic rays harmful to Cybertronians. While the Decepticons were safe from the worst effects of the rays while on Zel's surface; but in space, their systems would malfunction and their energon would evaporate. Even flying at high apexes had its risks. This lead to Megatron concluding that getting as much energon as possible was the best way to repair the shuttle.

Later on, Soundwave and Megatron discovered that Zel Samine specialized in generating power, the results of which exceeded that than Earth's. They decided to raid a wind power plant on [[Mount Jaad]]. When they told Starscream, he complained that power generated by wind was not very efficient. Soundwave told the Air Commander how the energy made on Zel was greater than Earth, but the Seeker continued to whine, believing that they were going to take each windmill one by one. This prompted Megatron to declare that they were going to attack the main station where all the energy collected by the windmills was stored. Soundwave warned that Autobot troops were gathering at Mount Jaad, leading to one of Starscream's boasts and one of Megatron's criticisms of the Air Commander. When Megatron called on Soundwave, the Communications Officer announced that he obtained data on Mount Jaad's geography, allowing Megatron to select the best route for the Decepticons to use. Pleased, Megatron told Starscream that he should behave more like Soundwave and jokingly suggested that the Air Commander should consume a beverage of Soundwave's rust flakes. While Starscream began thinking dark thoughts about Soundwave, the Communications Officer suggested that Megatron choose the formation of the Decepticon's attack and who should go with him (the latter being kind of pointless, seeing as both he and Starscream were the only subordinates available to Megatron at the time).

As such, Soundwave accompanied Megatron to Mount Jaad. Whenever he saw one of the defense systems pointed at him or Megatron, he destroyed it. Any time he caught sight of an Autobot solder, he beat the scrap out of him. When Brainstorm appeared, Soundwave stood quietly by Megatron's side as his leader and the headmaster exchanged words, and then assisted in fighting off Brainstorm and his troops. When Wheeljack joined a later battle against a hoard of Autobot troops, Soundwave contributed to his beating. Then, when they encountered Hound and his troops, who were the last line of defense for Mount Jaad. While Soundwave did not exchange banter with the Autobot, he did help his allies pummel the Autobot until he retreated. Now free to take all the energy the Decepticons wanted, Soundwave was also present for the rediscovery of Snapdragon. When the Decepticons returned to the ship, Soundwave asked Megatron whether or not they should use the energy collected from Mount Jaad to fix their ship, to which Megatron confirmed. After Megatron and Starscream exchanged headed words again, Soundwave suggested that Megatron select the next location for the Decepticons to go.

Later, Megatron decided to attack the [[Ranpas geothermal plant|geothermal power plant]], and Soundwave sent out Laserbeak to check for Autobots guarding the plant. When Starscream complained that geothermal power was primitive, Soundwave told him that the power within the power plant was nothing to joke about. Later, Laserbeak returned and Soundwave announced his findings: there were Autobots guarding the plant. This prompted Megatron to take action and choose who would go and storm the power plant. When the Decepticons were finished, Soundwave reported to Megatron that they had drained all the power from the plant, prompting Megatron to compliment Soundwave on his work. After Starscream stated how well the mission went and Megatron commented on how useless the Autobots were, Soundwave gave Megatron a bit of bad news: He had counted the number of energon cubes they acquired, but the amount they had was not the amount they were expecting, and apologized to Megatron for it. Megatron calmly brushed it off before turning to Starscream in a rage. Laserbeak had witnessed Starscream hoarding energon cubes for himself and had reported it to Megatron. Once Soundwave learned of this, he complimented Laserbeak on his work.

When Megatron announced that the Decepticons were going to attack a [[Mongan hydroelectric power station|hydroelectric power station]], Soundwave questioned his leader's choice of action. He told Megatron that the Autobots had set up sentries around the power station and suggested attacking a different target. First asking Soundwave if he was afraid, Megatron assured him that it would only be Autobot troops they would be facing, not Optimus Prime. He then angrily stated that if the Decepticons allowed themselves to be diverted from their course by the Autobots, it would humiliate them. The Decepticon leader told Soundwave to never say anything like that again, and Soundwave complied. When the Decepticons turned out to be successful in their endeavors, Megatron asked his Communications Officer if he still believed that the Decepticons should have attacked a different spot. Soundwave denied this and admitted that his opinion from before was unauthorized, and Megatron agreed with him, adding that his troops should just shut up and listen to their leader.

Later, Soundwave sent Laserbeak on another scouting mission, and when he returned, Laserbeak reported that the Autobots apparently made contact with whatever was in the UFO. Asking his leader what they should to, Soundwave suggested sending a task force to intercept the Autobots, thus preventing them from allying with the UFO. Megatron agreed, and once he was sure Soundwave knew where the Autobots were going (which he did), he sent out his troops to intercept the Autobots. At the end of that mission, Megatron invited his new discoveries, Galvatron, Cyclonus, and Scourge to the Decepticon shuttle. Cyclonus immediately knew that the reason the ship had been put in a cave was to prevent detection by the Autobots. Galvatron praised Soundwave for his excellent judgment and while Soundwave said nothing, Megatron warned Galvatron not to act as if his troops were Galvatron's. The Communications Officer silently listened to Galvatron's tale of how he rules the universe in the future, but that he came to the past to prevent a threat to his rule, an Autobot doomsday weapon known as [[Zel Quartz]]. As Megatron decided to join his forces with Galvatron's, Soundwave assigned to a team for the purpose of finding the location of the Zel Quartz. Soundwave managed to determine three possible locations where the Zel Quartz was likely to be found.

The first location determined by Soundwave was the [[Lazalt Ruins]]. When Cyclonus explained that there was a gem to be found there called the Gem of Mystery, which the Decepticons suspected to be the Zel Quartz, Soundwave confirmed Cyclonus, mentioning that what Cyclonus said matched up with reports made by the Paradius system inhabitants. Soundwave then contributed to stopping a growing feud between Megatron and Galvatron, and suggested letting him and Cyclonus select who would go to the Lazalt Ruins. When the Decepticons returned with the Gem of Mystery, Soundwave examined it and announced that it was not the Zel Quartz, but it did contain a significant amount of energy. Soon, Megatron and Galvatron once again began fighting amongst themselves, and Soundwave stated the urgency of the situation. When it looked like a brawl was imminent, Soundwave announced that nothing was going to stop the Decepticon leaders. Luckily, Starscream managed to avert the catastrophe, unintentionally reminding the leaders that they were both the same person, and Soundwave admitted that he was impressed by Starscream's work. He also joined in with everyone in an evil group laughter.

However, the ruins have been around before Zel Samine was ever colonized by its current inhabitants. It is hypothesized that it is what remains of an older civilization, and that within the temple, a mysterious rock called the Jewel/Gem of Mystery is said to exist. The temple itself is located in the middle of a fogy jungle, inhabited by nasty bugs. It is the first possible location of the [[Zel Quartz]].

The [[Autobot|Autobots]] came to the Lazalt Ruins in their search of the Zel Quartz, with [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] explaining its history and [[Arcee (G1)|Arcee]] telling about the rumors of the Jewel of Mystery. [[Jazz (G1)|Jazz]], on the other hand, talked about the bugs that inhabited the jungle around the ruins. After [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] had to stop [[Kup (G1)|Kup]] from going into one of his old stories, the Autobots chose who would be exploring the ruins. The chosen Autobots had to brave hoards of [[Decepticon|Decepticons]] while fighting in the fog, fight [[Skullcruncher]] twice for a key they needed while braving a mine field, deal with [[Apeface]], and have a showdown with [[Predaking]]. After that, they were free to take the Jewel of Mystery, and before they left, they managed to find Springer who joined them. When the Autobots studied the Jewel of Mystery, they found that it was not the Zel Quartz, and thus returned it.

====Decepticon story====
Due to [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave's]] research, the Decepticons came to believe that the Lazalt Ruins was a possible location for the Zel Quartz, due to rumors about the Gem of Mystery. Starscream found this hard to believe, predicting that the gem had been taken long ago by archeologists. [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]] told [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] that the ruins had been discovered only recently, talked about its history, and spoke of the rumors about the Gem of Mystery. Soundwave confirmed Cyclonus, referring to research made by the inhabitants of the Paradius system. Even though the Decepticons knew that the Autobots knew they were coming and had set up guards, they still sent out their troops. Traversing through the fog, beating whatever Autobots they could, fighting [[Chromedome (G1)|Chromedome]] once, making it through a minefield, taking down [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]] for a key in order to proceed, dealing with Chromedome again, the Decepticons made it to the temple. Once there, they found [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] and [[Sky Lynx (G1)|Sky Lynx]] guarding the Gem. When they were defeated, the Decepticons took the Gem of Mystery back to their ship, finding a [[Sharkticon (G1)|Sharkticon]] on the way out who joined them. When Soundwave examined the Gem, he found that while it did possess large amounts of energy, it was not the Zel Quartz. Though "only" Communications Officer, he is comparable to [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] and [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] in rank and is the only one of the three to display consistent loyalty to Megatron. Soundwave guards his place in the hierarchy fiercely. Other Decepticons (except Megatron) see him as a two-faced snake, since, as Communications Officer, Soundwave hears all and doesn't hesitate to use blackmail to keep himself high in Megatron's esteem. The other Decepticons wouldn't mind abandoning him on the battlefield—if they thought Megatron would let them get away with it.

Soundwave commands [[Decepticon Mini-Cassette|a legion of cassette troops]] to carry out tasks big and small. He has a symbiotic relationship with them, providing them transportation and a cheap, if cramped, place to live in his chest. Sometimes he lets them all out to watch impromptu gladiator games or takes them to discotheques. In return, they perform spy and recon missions for him and make sure no one calls him "un-krozzo-matic".

The Decepticons, including Soundwave, attempted to hijack the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]] four million years ago, only to fail and fall into deactivation sleep for four million years. In 1984, the detonation of the volcano, [[Mount St. Hilary]], reactivated the Autobots and Decepticons, unleashing their war on Earth. Learning the [[Human|inhabitants]] of this planet had access to its vast energy sources, Soundwave joined the Decepticons in raiding a drive-in movie theatre. {{storylink|The Transformers (issue)|The Transformers}} Soon after, Soundwave participated in a raid on [[Harrison Nuclear Power Plant]], and after helping the Decepticons make off with large chunks of its machinery, helped use their bounty to build a [[Fortress Sinister|new headquarters atop a cliffside]]. {{storylink|Power Play!}} After returning from [[S. When an ice age approached, the Decepticons survived by powering down under what would eventually become the [[San Francisco]] Bay. {{storylink|Hearts of Steel issue 1}} Soundwave woke up in the mid-19th century, where he came under the command of [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]]. Long before the war began, Soundwave was the personal assistant to Senator [[Ratbat (G1)|Ratbat]]. When [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] caught Ratbat's eye as a champion of the illegal underground gladiatorial matches, Ratbat sent Soundwave to offer Megatron funding and weapons technology. When [[Bumper (G1)|two]] [[Fastback (G1)|Autobots]] were discovered listening in on their conversation, Soundwave dispatched [[Ravage (G1)|Ravage]], [[Buzzsaw (G1)|Buzzsaw]], and [[Laserbeak (G1)|Laserbeak]] to capture them. After their capture, he read Bumper's mind to see if there was any immediate threat to Megatron's activities. {{storylink|Megatron Origin issue 2}} Some time later, Soundwave was assigned to find a warrior with flight capabilities. Four million years ago, Soundwave and [[Hook (G1)|Hook]] were leading a Decepticon offensive to cover for [[Octane]]'s convoy of energon. When Optimus Prime slipped away to intercept the convoy, Soundwave went after him and got the drop on Prime from behind. Prime's bodyguard [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]] turned the tables on him, though, taking out both Soundwave and his Mini-Cassettes. {{storylink|The Iron Age}}

During the war, [[Thunderwing (G1)|Thunderwing]] contacted various scientists on both sides to discuss his startling findings that the conflict would create such devastation that would render the planet uninhabitable, and that the only way to survive was to adopt the [[Pretender|organic carapace]] idea he had come up with. After the end of the cataclysm brought by Thunderwing, Soundwave part of a plan to assassinate [[Blaster (G1)|Blaster]], a motivational speaker for the Autobots, Soundwave had [[Beachcomber (G1)|Beachcomber]] captured and used [[Bombshell (G1)|Bombshell]] to implement a [[cerebro-shell]] into him. While Beachcomber didn't outright kill Blaster, his motivational broadcast failed to air at precisely the moment the Decepticons began the big push. {{storylink|Spotlight: Blaster}}

Centuries later, after [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] disappeared, Megatron assigned [[Bludgeon (G1)|Bludgeon]] to delve into Shockwave's research and relay all the information back to him. As the Decepticon leader did not fully trust Bludgeon, Megatron also assigned Soundwave to spy on him. Soundwave followed Bludgeon and his team as they left for Earth in 1984 and established a base within [[Mount St. Helens]], eventually discovering that they intended to resurrect [[Thunderwing (G1)|Thunderwing]]. Though Soundwave tried to stop them, [[Iguanus (G1)|Iguanus]] used an experimental cannon from Shockwave's arsenal to lock him in his alt mode while they instigated a volcanic eruption. He was eventually recovered by a team of unwitting humans who sold him to a pawn shop. {{storylink|Spotlight: Soundwave}}

Soundwave was purchased by a human teenager named [[Jimmy (young boy)|Jimmy]] and taken to his home. When Ravage and Laserbeak were reprogrammed by the American government agency [[Skywatch]] to find the other Transformers, Skywatch's control signal was blocked by a signal emanating from a functioning Soundwave, still in cassette-player mode. {{storylink|Devastation issue 4}} Sometime later on, Ravage and Laserbeak located the signal and reclaimed their master from Jimmy. Relocating to Mount St. Helens, Soundwave told them that he could barely keep blocking Skywatch's hold on them, due to his weakening state in cassette mode. Shockwave suddenly appeared from a cave entrance and said that the four could make a deal together. {{storylink|Maximum Dinobots issue 4}} Shockwave knew how Soundwave could unlock his robot mode, but would only tell him if he did Shockwave a favour in return, something which Soundwave agreed to. He was told that Skywatch had placed a bomb in Shockwave's head, and that he needed to intercept and copy its disarm code. After returning to his position as Megatron's right hand, Soundwave helped defeat the Autobot forces on Earth. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 7}} He was present during the attack on [[New York City]], and detected the incoming human military jets. The planes fired, and on Megatron's orders, Soundwave calmly detonated the arsenal. He then launched Laserbeak to take out the human resistance. {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 1}}

Soundwave reported that the humans had sent a sizable ground force after the Decepticons. Following Megatron's orders, he released [[Frenzy (G1)|Frenzy]] and set him loose on the humans. Megatron had Soundwave send out a fake Autobot SOS transmission in an attempt to trick the Autobots into leaving their base. The plan was a success and Optimus Prime and his crew were lured out. When the Autobots realized that they had been deceived, Megatron sent a message through Soundwave's transmitter, gloating how he had tricked Prime and announced that his crew was going to steal the energon the Autobots had on their shuttle. When Megatron had finished his message, Soundwave returned to base. On the way back to their shuttle, the Autobots encountered Soundwave again, this time leading a hoard of Decepticon troops, and fought them. Despite his best efforts, Soundwave was overwhelmed and left to rejoin Megatron. Later, Soundwave fought the Autobots again while they were dealing with another swarm of enemies. He lost again, and left to fight another day.

Later on, Soundwave teamed up with his future self, Soundblaster, and with [[Full-Tilt]] as the final defense against the Autobots before they reached Megatron and Galvatron. When the Autobots arrived, Soundblaster started by expressed [[dull surprise]] at how the Autobots managed to survive up until the current point. Soundwave continued, warning the Autobots that he would not let them stand in Megatron's way. Both present and future versions of the Communications Officer we all know and love put the best fight they could, but even with Full-Tilt's help, the Autobots overpowered them.

====Decepticon story====
When the Decepticons lost all contact with a team they had sent to investigate a space-time warp and UFOs they had detected on the planet Zel Samine; Megatron decided to investigate and sent Soundwave and Starscream to the planet on a shuttle with a space bridge on-board, planning to get to Zel later by using that space bridge. Upon entering the planet, the shuttle was damaged and Soundwave hid it inside a cave. Once that was done, Soundwave prepared for Megatron's arrival through the space bridge. As Soundwave checked the coordinates of the space bridge, he had to listen to Starscream's whining. Even when he told the Air Commander that the space bridge should work despite there having been instabilities in the route, it did nothing but cause Starscream to whine some more. When Starscream asked Soundwave about the capabilities of the space bridge inside of a cave, Soundwave responded that he set up a relay device outside, taking care of any problems. At Starscream's request, Soundwave activated the Space Bridge; but despite Soundwave's preparations, the space bridge still exploded. Surveying what remained of the space bridge, the Communications Officer stated that it was broken and needed repairs. When Starscream asked what happened to Megatron, who was being transported when the space bridge blew up; Soundwave explained that the two points in the space bridge's transmission became offset, hypothesizing that Megatron was teleported to another location. After getting an estimation of Megatron's location, Soundwave went with Starscream to find their leader.

Once they reached the expected location, Soundwave was disappointed to see that Megatron was nowhere to be found. He became even more worried when Starscream hypothesized that Megatron was blown up when the space bridge malfunctioned, but he admitted that was a possibility. Fortunately, Soundwave's hopes were answered when Megatron appeared out of nowhere and blasted Starscream right when the Air Commander declared himself to be the new Decepticon leader. Soundwave announced that he was pleased to see that Megatron was unharmed and then apologized for Megatron's bumpy ride on the space bridge, explaining that it was unstable on Zel. He continued to explain that the ship they used to get to Zel was damaged and needed repairs. Luckily for Soundwave, Megatron decided to brush off the bad news for later. Furthermore, Megatron announced that he found something important when he arrived, gaining Soundwave's interest. Asking what it was, Soundwave learned that Megatron had found a crashed Autobot ship in the distance. Soundwave was then used to contact the Autobots, setting up a two-way connection between the two factions. After threatening the Autobots that he was coming to steal the energon from their shuttle, Megatron terminated the connection. Soundwave listened quietly as Megatron explaining his reasoning for announcing his attack, only speaking up to agree with his leader when he badmouthed the Autobots. Then, after Megatron poked fun at Starscream, Soundwave then accompanied Megatron and Starscream in advancing on the Autobot ship.

After fighting three hoards of Autobot troops, standing by his leader's side as he and Wheeljack trash-talked each other, assisting Megatron in dealing with Wheeljack's troops and then handing the inventor's skidplate to him, navigating through a minefield, brawling with three more hoards of Autobots, Soundwave and the Decepticons finally made it to the Autobot ship, with only Optimus Prime and one more swarm of his troops to deal with. Once again, Soundwave silently observed Megatron and Optimus' talk-before-a-fight routine before leaping into the battle at his leader's command. Soundwave trashed as many Autobots as he could, but before Optimus could be thoroughly beaten, the Autobot leader decided to flee. This left the Decepticons free to steal whatever energon they could from the downed Autobot shuttle.

Back at the Decepticon ship, Soundwave began to connect the dots between the crashing of the Decepticon's ship and the malfunctioning of the space bridge and began making a study of Zel Samine, the results of which troubled him. Eventually, the Communications Officer found himself being asked on his opinion on the UFOs by his leader. Soundwave explained about how the UFOs appeared right after the anomaly in space and time they detected, and that they landed on Zel Samine. Admitting that he was baffled, Soundwave continued to share that he believed that it was no coincidence how the Decepticons managed to loose contact with the troops who were sent to investigate the incidents. This lead Megatron to believe that the incidents were caused by some kind of new secret Autobot weapon. Then Megatron saw that Soundwave was troubled (by the results of his study of Zel Samine. When demanded to share his knowledge, Soundwave asked his leader if he felt strange since arriving on Zel. Explaining, Soundwave said that he believed that the incidents with the shuttle and the space bridges were connected, and that he decided to study the planet. When Megatron admitted that he was indeed feeling strange since coming to Zel and asked Soundwave for what he found out, Soundwave gave the details of his discoveries:

Zel's sun, Paradius, was dangerous to Transformers, as it emitted electromagnetic rays harmful to Cybertronians. While the Decepticons were safe from the worst effects of the rays while on Zel's surface; but in space, their systems would malfunction and their energon would evaporate. Even flying at high apexes had its risks. This lead to Megatron concluding that getting as much energon as possible was the best way to repair the shuttle.

Later on, Soundwave and Megatron discovered that Zel Samine specialized in generating power, the results of which exceeded that than Earth's. They decided to raid a wind power plant on [[Mount Jaad]]. When they told Starscream, he complained that power generated by wind was not very efficient. Soundwave told the Air Commander how the energy made on Zel was greater than Earth, but the Seeker continued to whine, believing that they were going to take each windmill one by one. This prompted Megatron to declare that they were going to attack the main station where all the energy collected by the windmills was stored. Soundwave warned that Autobot troops were gathering at Mount Jaad, leading to one of Starscream's boasts and one of Megatron's criticisms of the Air Commander. When Megatron called on Soundwave, the Communications Officer announced that he obtained data on Mount Jaad's geography, allowing Megatron to select the best route for the Decepticons to use. Pleased, Megatron told Starscream that he should behave more like Soundwave and jokingly suggested that the Air Commander should consume a beverage of Soundwave's rust flakes. While Starscream began thinking dark thoughts about Soundwave, the Communications Officer suggested that Megatron choose the formation of the Decepticon's attack and who should go with him (the latter being kind of pointless, seeing as both he and Starscream were the only subordinates available to Megatron at the time).

As such, Soundwave accompanied Megatron to Mount Jaad. Whenever he saw one of the defense systems pointed at him or Megatron, he destroyed it. Any time he caught sight of an Autobot solder, he beat the scrap out of him. When Brainstorm appeared, Soundwave stood quietly by Megatron's side as his leader and the headmaster exchanged words, and then assisted in fighting off Brainstorm and his troops. When Wheeljack joined a later battle against a hoard of Autobot troops, Soundwave contributed to his beating. Then, when they encountered Hound and his troops, who were the last line of defense for Mount Jaad. While Soundwave did not exchange banter with the Autobot, he did help his allies pummel the Autobot until he retreated. Now free to take all the energy the Decepticons wanted, Soundwave was also present for the rediscovery of Snapdragon. When the Decepticons returned to the ship, Soundwave asked Megatron whether or not they should use the energy collected from Mount Jaad to fix their ship, to which Megatron confirmed. After Megatron and Starscream exchanged headed words again, Soundwave suggested that Megatron select the next location for the Decepticons to go.

Later, Megatron decided to attack the [[Ranpas geothermal plant|geothermal power plant]], and Soundwave sent out Laserbeak to check for Autobots guarding the plant. When Starscream complained that geothermal power was primitive, Soundwave told him that the power within the power plant was nothing to joke about. Later, Laserbeak returned and Soundwave announced his findings: there were Autobots guarding the plant. This prompted Megatron to take action and choose who would go and storm the power plant. When the Decepticons were finished, Soundwave reported to Megatron that they had drained all the power from the plant, prompting Megatron to compliment Soundwave on his work. After Starscream stated how well the mission went and Megatron commented on how useless the Autobots were, Soundwave gave Megatron a bit of bad news: He had counted the number of energon cubes they acquired, but the amount they had was not the amount they were expecting, and apologized to Megatron for it. Megatron calmly brushed it off before turning to Starscream in a rage. Laserbeak had witnessed Starscream hoarding energon cubes for himself and had reported it to Megatron. Once Soundwave learned of this, he complimented Laserbeak on his work.

When Megatron announced that the Decepticons were going to attack a [[Mongan hydroelectric power station|hydroelectric power station]], Soundwave questioned his leader's choice of action. He told Megatron that the Autobots had set up sentries around the power station and suggested attacking a different target. First asking Soundwave if he was afraid, Megatron assured him that it would only be Autobot troops they would be facing, not Optimus Prime. He then angrily stated that if the Decepticons allowed themselves to be diverted from their course by the Autobots, it would humiliate them. The Decepticon leader told Soundwave to never say anything like that again, and Soundwave complied. When the Decepticons turned out to be successful in their endeavors, Megatron asked his Communications Officer if he still believed that the Decepticons should have attacked a different spot. Soundwave denied this and admitted that his opinion from before was unauthorized, and Megatron agreed with him, adding that his troops should just shut up and listen to their leader.

Later, Soundwave sent Laserbeak on another scouting mission, and when he returned, Laserbeak reported that the Autobots apparently made contact with whatever was in the UFO. Asking his leader what they should to, Soundwave suggested sending a task force to intercept the Autobots, thus preventing them from allying with the UFO. Megatron agreed, and once he was sure Soundwave knew where the Autobots were going (which he did), he sent out his troops to intercept the Autobots. At the end of that mission, Megatron invited his new discoveries, Galvatron, Cyclonus, and Scourge to the Decepticon shuttle. Cyclonus immediately knew that the reason the ship had been put in a cave was to prevent detection by the Autobots. Galvatron praised Soundwave for his excellent judgment and while Soundwave said nothing, Megatron warned Galvatron not to act as if his troops were Galvatron's. The Communications Officer silently listened to Galvatron's tale of how he rules the universe in the future, but that he came to the past to prevent a threat to his rule, an Autobot doomsday weapon known as [[Zel Quartz]]. As Megatron decided to join his forces with Galvatron's, Soundwave assigned to a team for the purpose of finding the location of the Zel Quartz. Soundwave managed to determine three possible locations where the Zel Quartz was likely to be found.

* The G1 cartoon almost always depicted him as having to press all his own controls to eject minions or perform other functions even though these are actually part of him. This has led to many a shot of Soundwave pressing his own crotch. What will the children think?

* Soundwave's distinctive voice proved to be one of Generation 1's most memorable aspects. The [[Wikipedia:Vocoder|highly processed voice]] (processed by [[Scott Brownlee]]) began with [[Frank Welker]] basically doing his "Dr. Claw" voice from ''[[Wikipedia:Inspector Gadget|Inspector Gadget]]''. Whether due to variations in the performance or the processing, the final result varied quite a bit across Soundwave's three seasons on the show. Occasionally, as in the episodes "[[Roll for It]]" and "[[Webworld]]", the processing was left out and Welker's actual voice can be heard. This Dr. Claw version of Soundwave's voice made a return when Welker reprised the [[Soundwave (ROTF)|role]] for [[Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen]] as the processing was, again, left out.

* Similiarly, he often emphasizes words at random, such as his well-known "RavAAAAAGE", or "LAAZABEEK". This may be a side efect of the voice doctoring in the cartoon.

This is a fairly common way to refer to others you admire and such in Japanese. It's also a term that gang members use toward older, more experienced members who aren't actual gang bosses. Take it as you will. Whatever it says about his relationship with them, it does give new meaning to the phrase [[Wikipedia:Big Brother (Nineteen Eighty-Four)|"Big Brother is watching over you"]].

* Soundwave was in charge of the [[Letters page (Marvel UK)|UK letters page]] from issues 22 to 78, barring a few interruptions.

* Soundwave's computer model was used for one of the [[generic]] Transformers in Beast Machines. It is seen in "[[Forbidden Fruit]]" during [[Nightscream (BM)|Nightscream's]] flashback being cornered by [[Vehicon (BM)|Vehicon drones]] just before Nightscream flees into the lower levels of Cybertron. Though the model was recolored, it was still really 'Soundwavey,' causing much confusion among fans. His computer model as well as [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl's]] continued to show up for the rest of the series, used to represent deactivated Transformer shells.

* Later, Soundwave's character model showed up numerous times in various color schemes as a generic background character in the ''[[Armada (cartoon)|Armada]]'' cartoon.

* [[Sideways (RID)|Sideways]] listened to music using a tape deck resembling Soundwave in the ''[[Cybertron (cartoon)|Cybertron]]'' episode "[[Memory]]". Later, after a new [[Planet X (Cybertron)|Planet X]] was found, ''Cybertron'' [[Soundwave (Cybertron)|Soundwave]] held tape deck Soundwave in his arms. This caused a great disturbance in the [[force]]...

* IDW Publishing seems to be undecided on Soundwave's speech pattern. In ''[[Megatron Origin]]'', he speaks in his classic cartoon-based monotone. However, in "[[Spotlight: Soundwave]]", he speaks in a normal fashion. Which is once again reverted to the classic speech in ''[[All Hail Megatron]]''.

* [[Guido Guidi]] made a concept drawing of Soundwave with a modern microcassette recorder as an alt-mode (which are still used by reporters and doctors today) for [[IDW Publishing]]'s ''[[All Hail Megatron]]'' maxi-series. This was also unused. Consequently, Soundwave may go down as the Transformers character with the most unused designs.
