A combiner is a group of Transformers that assemble and combine their bodies into a single machine, or that composite machine itself. Most combiners form a larger Super Robot with its own unique personality (a character in its own right), but other varieties of combiner exist, forming vehicles, weapons, or other items. Combiners tend to be considerably larger and more powerful than the average Transformer, equivalent to strategic-grade weapons; in The War Within, the combiners were neutral, with both sides courting their favor.

There are a number of combiner-related terms that can be easy to mix up, partially because some of them are used interchangeably. Additionally, most of them have no formal definition and thus may be used differently by different fans. Consequently, most of the discussion which follows should not be taken as the word of Primus, but as a rough description of common usage.

Terms for combiners
; Combiner : As above, a member of a group of Transformers who assemble into a composite form. Also refers to that composite form itself. This is the most general term for all combining Transformers. "Combiner" is the only term for combining Transformers that has been used by Hasbro in an official capacity (with the exception of the more limited "special teams"), having even appeared with a gear-shaped logo on Robots in Disguise toy packaging.

; Gestalt : Fan-terminology for a certain class of combiners -- generally used only for "big robot" combiners with emergent personalities. The term is nebulously defined, such that some fans would consider a two-member combiner such as Squawkbox a gestalt, but other fans would not. This is probably the fandom's second most frequently-used term for combining Transformers. Its use in Transfandom is derived from the principle of gestalt psychology, which is sometimes simplified to mean "greater/different than the sum of its parts," though a few fans consider this term pretentious and obtuse. It has never been used by Hasbro in an official capacity, although it did appear in some Energon design sketches, implying that Hasbro designers use the term occasionally.

; Scramble City combiner : A specific type of Generation 1 giant gestalt that follows the five-member design featured in the Japanese “Scramble City” OVA. The team leader is larger than the other members and forms the main body of the combiner, while the others are smaller and form the limbs. The limbs are interchangeable, although there is always a generally-accepted “normal” formation. Further, the limbs are interchangeable from one Scramble City combiner to another, making for a large number of bizarre combinations. Limbs are also able to attach to and augment Metroplex & Metrotitan (see “Trivia” below). Note that this term is purely descriptive rather than being a proper name.

; Special Team : A synonym for Scramble City combiner. When the Scramble City toys were marketed in Europe they were referred to as Special Teams, and the term even appeared in the UK comic book series. The term was used in some marketing materials in the US, such as packing lists for the toy case assortments, but never appeared in US fiction until the Ultimate Guide was published in 2004.

; Super Robot : A robot which is formed through the combination of two or more Transformers. Powered-up robot modes comprised of only one Transformer who combines with some of their own accessories are often also referred to as Super Robots, such as Powermaster Optimus Prime or the incarnations of Prime from Robots in Disguise and all three Unicron Trilogy series. It is probably safe to informally refer to any such mode as a Super Robot (thus including, say, G1 Ultra Magnus and Energon Landmine). Note that this means Super Robots are not always combiners and do not have to have their own personality. Rather, Super Robot and combiner are two different categories of Transformer which sometimes overlap.

; Fusilateral quintrocombiner : Coined by Simon Furman in issue 9 of the Generation 2 comic to refer to the Combaticons. It presumably is meant to refer to all the Scramble City teams, as their combined forms consist of five robots. It may also apply to the Predacons, but it doesn't matter because nobody uses this term anyway.

; Amalgam model : Yet another obscure term for combiners first used by Simon Furman via Wheeljack in the Devastation Derby story in the UK comic books.

Types of combiner
As mentioned above, most combiners form a super robot. However, there are many other types of combining in the Transformers multiverse.

In the Energon franchise, most of the Autobot characters were able to combine with each other in pairs much like Victorys Multiforce. These combined forms can probably be considered Super Robots. The combined form was simply controlled by whichever Autobot was "on top".

Generation 1 contains many examples of combined altmodes, including Reflector, Dreadwing, Big Powered, the Battlestar, the Double Targetmasters, and the Micromaster Combiner Squads. The Unicron Trilogy's Mini-Cons brought to the fiction combined weapon modes, like the Star Saber & Dark Saber swords, Requiem Blaster cannon, and Skyboom Shield.

Not combiners
Not all cases of multiple things attaching to each other are combiners. As mentioned above, many Super Robots -- which are formed through a conglomeration of parts -- are not combiners. Energon Landmine, for example.

A similar case can be found in Transformers who have two or more "components" which combine into a single entity. G1 Sky Lynx has lynx and dino-bird components, G1 Omega Supreme has tank, base, and rocket components, and Magmatron has three dinosaur components. However, all of these components are considered to be "part of" the overall Transformer, even through they can act independently. The Duocons are another case of this sort. All of these examples are not combiners because there is only one Transformer involved in each of them, regardless of how many bodies that Transformer may simultaneously operate.

Sometimes a smaller Transformer will attach to and enhance a larger Transformer in some way. This is the case when Mini-Cons powerlink with bulks, as well as with binary-bonded partners like Headmasters, Powermasters/Godmasters, and Breastforce members. Although these examples do include more than one Transformer, they are not considered "combiners". The simplest justification for this is that, in these cases, the "combined" form is almost exactly the same in appearance as the noncombined form.

Trivia
Scramble-city type combiners were initially designed to be a sub-line of Diaclone called... what else... Scramble City. This goes along with their ability to interact with and attach to Metroplex & Metrotitan, the designs of which were also originally intended for the Diaclone line.

Combiners were a very popular idea during the Generation 1 toyline and as such there are loads of scrapped combiner designs that never got past the drawing board. Among them were:

*A Scramble City style dinosaur combiner. The body is a T-Rex, while the limbs are a Pteradactyl (right arm), Ankylosaurus (left leg), Dimetrodon (left arm), and Styracosaurus (right leg).

*A decidedly goofy organic insect combiner composed of a stag beetle (right leg), another beetle (left leg), grasshopper (left arm), fly (right arm), and a cockroach body.

*A cybernetic beast combiner that did not form a robot, but rather a large cybernetic monster. It is formed from a cyber bat, mole, stag beetle, and a couple of fish things.

*A fifteen (!) vehicle Micromaster combiner where the only attached parts not contained by the component robots were the large robot fists. This combiner consists of three uniformly colored teams (in a similar fashion to the vehicular Voltron of the same time period):
**Air team (blue)- two jets, two helicopters, a space shuttle.
**Construction team (green)- a hauler, a bulldozer, a steam shovel, a tank (don't ask), a missile carrier (don't ask).
**Street team (red)- two cars, a motorcycle, a formula racer, a jeep.

*Another, simpler dinosaur combiner composed of a Pteradactyl, a not-really-a-Stegosaurus, and a T-Rex with a very large head. The three combine into a dinosaur thing similar to Magmatron's combined dino mode. It shares many visual characteristics with Tomy's relatively simple robot designs.

*A five vehicle combiner (evidently not Scramble City in nature) composed of a steam engine (right arm), steam boat (torso), car (right leg), truck (left leg), and plane (left arm).
Kup is a tough old coot. He's almost as old as rust, in fact, and he was plinking Decepticons with acid bursts from his trusty musket laser long before most of you turbo-revvin' young punks were born. In his day, lasers didn't need to use light; they did whatever they were told to do and liked it.

He's probably had a thousand adventures, has Kup, and he'll be glad to relate a story of any one of them at any time to a willing audience. The Dinobots love Kup's war stories, and don't seem to mind when he inadvertently leaves a piece out or changes the story between retellings. Old memory chips'll do that to you. Other Autobots can be less patient, and Kup finds this disrespectful and irritating. If there's one thing Kup dislikes it's when young punks don't respect their elders. If they'd only listen they might learn something. Hot Rod is one of the worst offenders in this way, but he's a good ladbot and Kup will straighten him out sooner or later, even if it takes a tank of Sharkticons.

Occasionally, Kup's vast experience gets in his way. When a situation doesn't remind him of anything, he has trouble figuring out what to do. This doesn't happen very much.
Though it is not yet established when Kup joined the Earth-bound Autobots, he was stationed at Autobot City during the 2005 invasion by the Decepticons. He was supervising construction efforts undetaken by Huffer and other workers when this work was interrupted by an impetuous drive-through by Hot Rod. Kup was determined to straighten out the adventure-seeking youth.

After the Decepticons began their attack, Kup and Hot Rod were trapped outside of Autobot City's fortress-like defenses. Thanks to an attempted hull breach by the Insecticons, Kup and Hot Rod entered a small gap in one of Autobot City's heavy blast doors -- in the process, Kup crunched Kickback's skull by running over it.

Inside the city, Kup and Hot Rod joined Arcee and Springer in rigging an explosives launcher into place to help defend against the might of Devastator. With the arrival of Optimus Prime the next day, the tide of battle was turned and the Decepticons were defeated -- but at a terrible price.

Following the events of the movie, Kup served as an advisor to the newly-minted Rodimus Prime.

Years later on the planet Nebulos, Kup encountered the Nebulan resistance against The Hive. Using Targetmaster technology stolen from the Decepticons, Kup was partnered with the Nebulan Recoil, who apparently then chewed his ear off about their leader, Optimus Prime.
During the Cybertronian War's earlier years, a young Kup served alongside Ironhide and Wheeljack under the command of Grimlock. He appeared to be the only one who would speak up against Grimlock. When Optimus Prime and Megatron disappeared in a prototype Space Bridge Accident, Kup followed his unit to the Lightning Strike Coalition offshoot of the Autobot faction.
Along with Arcee, Blaster, Hot Rod and Wheelie, Kup was part of a resistance group during Shockwave's control of Cybertron.

IDW comics continuity
Kup is extremely old. In years past, he's trained dozens of Autobots, including Prowl, Springer, Sideswipe, Sunstreaker, Hot Rod, and even Optimus Prime.

At some point, he and Outback crash-landed on a mysterious planet covered with radioactive crystals. Over time, Kup was slowly driven insane from the radiation; he talked to the dead corpse of Outback as though he were still alive (and used his disembodied arm as a club) and believed that zombies were attacking him when he shut down for the night. In reality, these zombies were fellow Autobots sent to rescue him, and Kup killed several of them before Springer managed to get a specialist in to extract the aging Autobot. Unfortunately, due to the damage Kup sustained from the radiation, his incompatibility with modern Transformers tech due to his age and stubborn unwillingness to upgrade, and a near-meltdown of his spark, he was placed on life support upon arriving aboard Ark-17, and it is unknown if he will recover - physically or mentally.

Within each Transformer is a database, storage of that Transformer's accumulated knowledge. The Underbase is a "collection of knowledge that underlies all databases," or rather the combined knowledge of the Transformer race. It is curated by Boltax within his Temple of Knowledge, and it is considered off-limits to either Autobot or Decepticon.

Though acquiring portions of the Underbase can be enlightening, the combined power of its knowledge could detonate a star on impact, and its mere proximity can leave a planet scorched of life. Its energies are especially damaging to Transformer microchips, though enhancement by anything organic can somewhat protect the Transformer.

Fiction
Marvel Comics continuity
Millions of years ago, back on Cybertron, the Underbase was being sought by Optimus Prime and the Triggerbots just as the Cybertronian Civil War was starting. The Underbase supposedly held all of Cybertron's knowledge, and it was heavily guarded (including molten mercury mine fields, cable jungles, and collapsing floors). Unknown to Optimus Prime, Megatron and the Triggercons were following him, intent on dispatching Optimus Prime and taking the powers of the Underbase for themselves. When the Autobots arrived at Boltax's Temple of Knowledge, the Disciples of Boltax said to Prime, "You must turn back immediately, Optimus Prime, and take your warriors with you. Pain and suffering will be yours if you stay."

Prime told his men to set camp while he went to seek the knowledge of the Underbase. Not that long after, Megatron came to the gates of Boltax as well. When Boltax's disciples gave Megatron the same message about pain and suffering, Megatron instead gave those same gifts to them, as he and his troops destroyed them with firepower.

Meanwhile, Prime met up Boltax, who welcomed him but could not give Prime exactly what he seeks, but nevertheless allowed him to bath in the knowledge of the Underbase in a chamber just beyond where they were standing. Optimus entered, but Megatron and his troops were not far behind, and Boltax was quickly dispatched as well.

Megatron entered the chamber. Realizing the truth, Prime told Megatron that the entire mountain was Boltax, who had converted himself into a giant containment vessel to store the vast energies of the Underbase, while the robot he and Megatron had talked to was merely a puppet. He then added that he'd discovered that the knowledge contained in the Underbase was too much for any one Transformer to know, and that any attempt to input the Underbase would only lead to "madness.... and death"

Not believing him, Megatron ordered his Decepticons to fire at Prime. As Megatron started boasting about his victory, he didn't see Optimus get up and press a switch, which closed the flame vents, causing the energy inside to build up. Everyone got out just in time to see the Underbase being shot out into space. Prime lamented, "Cybertron's greatest treasure - gone all because I let pride and glory - not reason - dictate my actions. All because of me. I will live with this shame for the rest of my existence." Interestingly, this incident - in that he removed the Underbase from Decepticon hands - would be one of the cornerstones of Optimus's sterling reputation. The Flames of Boltax!

On present-day Earth, Ratbat, Soundwave and Starscream got hold of a record of the preceding events that was stored on the Autobot cassettes, Raindance and Grand Slam. Club Con! Ratbat wanted to take the Underbase for himself, but so did Starscream, who abandoned their prisoner Buster Witwicky outside the Decepticons' base of operations in Antarctica with equipment to attract the attention of both the Autobots and Decepticons. While Starscream convinced the Decepticons to fight each other, he escaped in Scorponok's ship to search for the Underbase. Cold War! The Aerialbots found Buster and the rest of the Autobots followed, but not soon afterwards the Decepticons were upon them!

Meanwhile, Starscream had found the Underbase and had started to absorb its powers but was shot out of the way by Ratbat's Decepticon ship, piloted by an Autobot/Decepticon alliance. But Starscream wasn't dead! Now powered by a portion of the Underbase, he lifted Scorponok's ship and threw it at Ratbat's! Starscream announced, "I go now to destroy the cities of New York, Tokyo, and Buenos Aires!" Optimus Prime, predicting the potential loss of transportation, had the Ark waiting close by.

The Autobots and Decepticons separated into three groups to send to Starscream's three target cities, but Optimus Prime and Buster stayed behind. In New York, Starscream destroyed the Aerialbots, Jetfire, Bluestreak, Brawn, Gears, Goldbug, Mirage, Hoist, Hound, Jazz, the Seacons, and Blaster. Ratbat escaped, heading to the Ark, thinking Prime was going to use the Underbase for himself. In Tokyo, Starscream killed the Throttlebots, Thundercracker, Skywarp, the Dinobots, the Predacons, and Grimlock. Scorponok also left for the Ark, thinking Prime would use the Underbase for himself. In Buenos Aires, Starscream off-lined Laserbeak, Buzzsaw, Octane, Astrotrain, Blitzwing, the Technobots, the Terrorcons, Omega Supreme, and Soundwave. And before getting a chance to destroy Fortress Maximus, he heard a radio transmission and headed for the Ark.

Back on the Ark, Hi-Q (Prime's Powermaster component) and Buster launched the rocket. The rocket deflected the Underbase and altered its course, sending it directly towards Earth. At that point, Ratbat had taken Buster and Hi-Q hostage on the Ark, but Scorponok arrived, blasted everyone and went after the Underbase himself. Prime (with Hi-Q linked to him) stopped Scorponok just as the Underbase passed by.

Starscream arrived from the planet's surface and intercepted the Underbase's path, absorbing the entire thing. He began to grow and mutate until he finally exploded, demolishing all that was the Underbase. Dark Star
Stella Holley is a 26-year-old employee of a paperware manufacturer in or around Seattle, Washington. Like most humans, she is drawn into the Transformers' war by coincidence, but unlike most she does not expressly ally herself with or against the Autobots. Instead, she does what she can to help the Mini-Cons establish a home on Earth, away from the Autobot-Decepticon war, despite any dangers put in her path. She is compassionate, brave and proud, and endlessly impressed at how alike humans and Mini-Cons are, despite their physical differences. She can understand the Mini-Cons' standard binary language thanks to a mental link of the sort formed when a Mini-Con bonds with a "Bulk".

Of all the Mini-Cons, she is the closest emotionally to the Super Stunt Mini-Con Team, especially its leader Redline.
Micron Legends: Linkage Mini-Comics
Stella first encountered the Transformers as she entered her company's parking garage after work. The Super Stunt Mini-Con Team of Redline, Flat-Out and Servo had just turned her car into a turbo cannon via Powerlinx in order to destroy a pair of pursuing Fixer Bugs. After Redline formed a mental link with her and explained their plight, she hid the Mini-Cons in her home and helped them in their plans to build a Mini-Con haven on Earth.

She accompanied the Team and the newly-awakened Rollbar to the Deccan Plateau in India, where a shuttle from Cybertron had landed. Stella was to act as the interpreter for the Mini-Cons to negotiate for technology from the shuttle, should the shuttle pilot be an Autobot. (In the event it was a Decepticon, they had jury-rigged a portable warp-gate small enough for only their use to escape through.) When the Speed Chaser Mini-Con Team of Unicron-aligned Mini-Cons attacked, Stella managed to defend a mode-locked and upended Servo from a Fixer Bug, but it was the intervention of Scavenger that saved Stella and the Super Stunt Mini-Cons in the end. Stella talked with Scavenger, and he let the Mini-Cons have his ship on the grounds that they forget they ever saw him. However, she began to suffer the effects of heatstroke shortly after, and the Team quickly got her home with their new shuttle.

After the Sonic Assault Mini-Con Team joined up with Redline and crew, Stella went with the Mini-Cons to one of the Hawaiian Islands, where Redline set up a device that would unlock the Master Key program that would give all Mini-Cons unrestricted access to a vast power well, enabling them to break their programming blocks and Powerlinx-activated servility programs. Redline entrusted Stella with the protection of the last two Mini-Con storage panels he kept inside him while he underwent the upgrade process.

When the monstrous Ravenus ensnared Servo and Twirl, Stella fought back to save them in a battle mech made from her car, transformed by Powerlinx energy provided by Flat-Out and Falcia. She was able to knock Servo free from his link-port, but Ravenus escaped with Twirl. Realizing they needed more backup, Stella released the two Mini-Cons Impulsor and Quench from the storage panels, and the two called their team leader, Kingbolt, in to assist.
A year after the Mini-Cons left, her red hair spontaneously began to turn platinum blonde--a sign from her friends they had returned, as Stella had made a passing remark to them about wishing she could change her hair color.
