It tells the story of two groups of Transformers led by Fortress Maximus and Scorponok, and their adventures on the planet Nebulos; in the process, it introduces the Headmaster and Targetmaster gimmicks to the storyline. In the Marvel UK Transformers series it was run as a back-up strip alongside the regular stories.

The Headmasters plot merged with the ongoing Marvel storyline in Transformers issue #38.
Overview
A group of Autobots, led by Fortress Maximus, leaves Cybertron for the planet Nebulos hoping to forge a new, peaceful existence for themselves. But their arch foes, under the command of Scorponok, follow them, forcing the Autobots to join forces with the natives of that world in the most literal of ways. Soon Nebulos is being devastated by the Transformers' war, the Decepticons have found their own team of native allies, and the Autobots must leave the planet to keep from destroying it completely.

The mini-series was used to introduce the bulk of the 1987 toyline to the comics continuity. Many of those toys did not have Earthen altmodes, and thus required a different origin than the predominantly Earth-centric forms of the previous three years. The series also introduced the year's primary toy gimmicks of Headmasters and Targetmasters, whose heads and weapons transformed to armored humanoids.

Notes
* Series artist Frank Springer had the unenviable task of drawing 62 new characters in this series. With 74 character models between them. Factoring in transformations that's 132 pieces of reference art to juggle. There were <strike>occasional</strike>; frequent times when a character was accidentally illustrated looking like someone else. Perfectly understandable! Slightly less understandable was why Fortress Maximus, the starring character, would change head designs between panels on the same page. The recreational use of Benadryl has not been ruled out.
* Series colorist Nel Yomtov experienced <strike>a similar</strike> an identical problem. The two problems combined can make Headmasters a mildly confusing read ... but it's really not that bad.
* This shows Cyclonus and Scourge becoming Targetmasters, even though by some accounts they don't exist until 2005. The Marvel UK series would explain this away, but not the US series.
* This limited series was published bi-monthly.
* The US letter column Transmissions alluded to the possibility of an ongoing Headmasters series several times, most notably in US #37 Toy Soldiers! and US #38 Trial by Fire!: "We do have a massive stack of pro-Headmasters fanmail" and "we're still tallying votes." This was around the same time the editors promised a second Transformers: Universe series, in US #42, People Power!. Andy Schmidt is a comic book writer and Senior Editor for IDW Publishing, as well as a pretty frequent goofer. But he's doing his best to improve.

Before working for IDW, he was an editor at Marvel Comics, where he handled most titles under the "Marvel Heroes" brand as well as numerous other top titles, and oversaw the multi-title "Annihilation" crossover event.

He moved to IDW Publishing in 2008, starting out editing their G.I. Joe and Star Trek titles before leaving Star Trek to work on the Transformers brand, first as co-editor, and then taking over as full editor when Denton J. Tipton moved on to other projects. To say that he was overwhelmed with how obsessive Transfans are with the continuity would be an understatement.

He also owns and teaches at the Comics Experience school of comics in California.

Ramjet schemes to overthrow Megatron. Who knew the guy had it in him?

Synopsis
Skywarp diverts from his mission to meet with Ramjet in mid-flight. While speeding across the skies, Ramjet and Skywarp discuss the failings of Megatron and Starscream. Ramjet boasts that he has the smarts to overthrow Megatron, and tries to enlist Skywarp. Skywarp gives him 24 hours to come up with a good plan, reminding him of the old Cybertronian saying, "Always bet on the leader." Ramjet checks in with his Mini-Constructicons, who inform him that the Universal Cybertronic Tracker will be ready in 18 hours. Ramjet next contacts his Pentagon-employed facsimile Harrison (who, due to inferior construction, appears dimwitted) and tells him to be prepared to deliver missile codes. Ramjet will use the missiles to devastate the United States.

As Megatron and his Decepticons begin their war in Brasnya (as seen in Escalation, issue 4), Ramjet flies to the European Union Alternative Energy Research Center and drops fliers for an unspecified contest. A money symbol on the flier is actually a spy device which jumps off the paper and attaches itself to the computers of the Center's employees. Ramjet believes that someone at the Center will eventually develop a useful Energon substitute. Megatron, meanwhile delivers to Optimus Prime the beating of his life (as seen in Escalation, issue 5).

Ramjet later returns to his Mini-Constructicons, and they have his device ready. When two of them ask for a taste of his power once he overthrows Megatron, Ramjet destroys them for their insolence. Harrison meets with Ramjet and delivers the codes, but his face is melting off due to his inferior creation. Ramjet boasts of his plans to his liquefying lackey, which include tracking all Cybertronians, acquiring his Energon substitute, blowing up the U.S., enslaving the Decepticons and humans of Earth, and using a superstring space bridge to dominate the galaxy.

Unfortunately for Ramjet, Megatron arrives and beats him mercilessly, ripping out his spark before tearing him limb from limb. He scatters Ramjet's parts at Ramjet's base, Harrison's office at the Pentagon, and the Energy Research Center, indicating that he knew about Ramjet's plans in detail. Megatron keeps Ramjet's head as a trophy and an object lesson for his other troops. Behind him, Skywarp echoes his earlier statement, "Always bet on the leader."
Errors
* The size of the text in this issue is considerably smaller than the norm.
* On page 17, in the first speech bubble, the sentence is unfinished.

Notes
* This issue takes place after the New Avengers / Transformers miniseries, and is written by the same author.
* Although the previous series was really bad, this is surprisingly good. Who knew?
* This is the second Spotlight not written by Simon Furman.
* The timeframe of the issue corresponds with the events in the Escalation series.
* Apparently, IDW Transformers can fart (page 7). In general terms, this is not a new development.
* As Harrison collapses to the ground, it can also be seen that his car is wrecked and smoking. This is not explained, though it seems likely that the barely-functional facsimile is a terrible driver, given that it can only speak in rudimentary grunts. (It's also nicely symbolic of how everything around Ramjet was about to turn to crap.)
* This issue has the first mention of a space bridge in the IDW continuity.
* Given how the Decepticons are so keen on keeping themselves hidden from the planet's populace they infiltrate, it is quite unexpected that Megatron throws parts of Ramjet around the globe (thereby giving humans access to Cybertronian technology as well).
* Following the story are two pages of sketches by Robby Musso.
* This is the first Spotlight issue that does not appear to be part of a larger storyline. While other Spotlights have answered questions raised in previous issues, brought up mysteries that created new questions, or introduced future plot developments, this one seems to be relatively self-contained. The only references to the rest of the storyline exist merely for chronological placement. However, Simon Furman mentioned on his blog that Ramjet may show up again.
Megatron's first course of action is to establish a base in the Eastern European country of Latveria and attack the neighboring country of Symkaria knowing the Symkarians would blame the Latverians and likely start a war over the matter. == Creative team ==
The title was written by Stuart Moore and illustrated by Tyler Kirkham. Moore would later write the Spotlight issue for Ramjet, who made his IDW debut in this series.

Notes
*The best place to locate this series in the IDW Generation 1 continuity is during the latter part of Escalation issue 1, after Megatron is last seen in his Cybertronian tank form (he is in gun form in this series). Megatron had gathered his troops together at that point to secure his leadership and oversee the reestablishment infiltration protocol. Ironhide and Sunstreaker were off driving Hunter O'Nion, Verity Carlo, and Jimmy Pink home at that part of the story which would account for their absence in this series. Spotlight: Ramjet, which takes place after this series, begins during Escalation issue 2.
*In the Marvel comics continuity, the events happen sometime before the Civil War storyline. However, and we might be veering dangerously off-topic if we were to point this out, but it should probably be noted that despite appearances, this story isn't congruent with the mainstream Marvel Comics universe ("Earth-616"), even beyond the fact that Transformers are present. At the time this story is intended to take place (between the first two story-arcs of New Avengers, circa mid-2005), Doctor Doom is supposed to be dead, and Carol Danvers was not wearing the costume or going by the codename used in the series. With that said, we now return you to your scheduled dosage of space robots.
New Avengers/Transformers is a crossover miniseries between comic book companies IDW Publishing and Marvel Comics.

Overview
Megatron had recently come to Earth to put down insubordination of the infiltration team there led by Starscream. After crippling Starscream and bringing the rest of the team in line Infiltration, Megatron reestablished infiltration protocol and initiated phase two. Escalation issue 1 Phase two involves the destabilization of global politics with the goal of having national powers fight each other to reduce their ability to resist in later stages. Megatron's first course of action is to establish a base in the Eastern European country of Latveria and attack the neighboring country of Symkaria knowing the Symkarians would blame the Latverians and likely start a war over the matter. He also stole the Psycho-Prism from Doctor Doom which has the effect of increasing hostile tendencies of nearby humans, which would further escalate tensions.

Both the Avengers and Autobots investigate the disturbance....
Creative team
