Second, "Garry" is a commonly used suffix in Japanese names for transforming robots that transport ("carry") other robots or vehicles. The criticism of this theory is that while bad transliterations (i.e. the word is spelled right in Japanese, just converted to English wrong) are fairly common in Japanese names, Katakana misspellings of the Japanese words are much less common. Thus, it seems somewhat unlikely that decades of Japanese robots using the name "Garry" are simply misspelling it.

:Another theory is that Garry is short for "Garrison". The support for this theory is that Japanese versions of English words are often shortened versions, such as the Japanese word "Ice" used for "Ice Cream". However, "Garrison" seems like a poorer description than "Carry" for the transportation robots that are generally named "Garry" in Japan.

The Decepticons attacked planet [[Feminia]] and destroyed it completely, with [[Victory Saber]] lost in the destruction. However, [[Dai Atlas (Zone)|Dai Atlas]] and Sonic Bomber, the [[Powered Master]] space explorers, had arrived in time to rescue the badly wounded Autobot [[Supreme Commander]]. The Decepticons then shifted their focus to [[Earth]], where they hoped to obtain a powerful energy source called the [[Zodiac]]. Dai Atlas and Sonic Bomber intercepted them on Earth, defeated them, and regained the Zodiac. Impressed with Dai Atlas' courage and power, and too injured to lead any longer, Victory Saber inaugurated Dai Atlas as the new Supreme Commander of the Autobots. Violen Jiger at last came out of the shadows and attacked the Earth in person. Sonic Bomber and the other Powered Masters attempted to stop him with their "Triple Powered Attack" but failed. Nine million years ago, Thunder Clash was worried but ready about the growing conflict between Autobot and Decepticon, and often drilled the mechs under his command in the ways of battle, even though his ship, the ''[[Eight Track (G1)|Eight Track]]'', was stationed on the outer rim of the galaxy. His quick and powerful mind and the ease with which he commanded respect made him an ideal mentor for new recruits.

One such recruit, a young Autobot named [[Kup (G1)|Kup]], was on board the ''Eight Track'' when the ship was hailed by Commander [[Magnum]] of [[Autobot High Command]]. An important cargo hauler, the ''[[Van De Graaff]]'', was shot down by persons unknown over the planet [[Beta-Nine]]. Since Decepticons were suspected, Thunder Clash's team was ordered to retrieve the ship's precious cargo before the enemy could get their hands on it.

Indeed, the Decepticons were waiting for the ''Eight Track'' when it arrived, and the ''Eight Track'' was forced to make a crash landing. Though [[Landshark]] managed the landing with no casualties, the wiseass old mech began sowing seeds of uncertainty and fear. Thunder Clash shot Landshark down quickly, reminding him at length that, as Autobots, it didn't matter how many Decepticons there were or how hopeless the situation was—all that mattered was the cargo they were sent after. After leaving their ship's wreck behind them, the four Autobots were suddenly attacked by a fleet of [[Skyraider]]s led by [[Banzai-Tron (G1)|Banzai-Tron]]. Immediately, Kup was separated from them, but Thunder Clash ordered that the young Autobot was on his own while the team found proper cover.

While the Decepticons were momentarily distracted, Thunder Clash told [[Flak (G1)|Flak]] to radio Kup to meet him at the ''Van De Graaff''. On the way, Thunder Clash hoped he could divert a few of the Decepticons away from the other two. Unfortunately, Thunder Clash wasn't able to land a shot on the Decepticon that followed him, and he arrived at Kup's position at the ''Van De Graaff'' without being able to rid himself of Skyquake, and now also having Banzai-Tron and Gaihawk to deal with. Kup, however, had an idea. He set a blaster to "overload," placed it in a container, and offered it to Banzai-Tron as terms of their surrender. After it exploded, Banzai-Tron woke up to find Thunder Clash holding his mortar launcher at his head.

Shortly thereafter, a recovery team arrived to take Thunder Clash's crew, their Decepticon prisoners, and the cargo back home. By the time they had returned to [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], the war had officially begun. Commander Magnum, in response to the bravery of Thunder Clash's crew, were inducted into a special new Autobot military unit, the [[Cybertron Elite Guard|Elite Guard]]. {{storylink|Wings of Honor}}

A few years later, Thunder Clash's team joined with [[Metalhawk]]'s team to battle a horde of [[Virulent Clone]]s. The two teams of Elite Guardsmen were victorious. Wing Dagger's inert form was taken to [[Primus]]. {{storylink|Unicron Unleashed}} With the aid of [[Rad White|Rad]], Primus restored the warrior, imbuing him with a [[Spark of Combination]]. {{storylink|Open Fire!}} Reformatted into Wing Saber, he joined Optimus's team not only to find energon, but to avenge the death of his friend.

Wing Saber, having been reformatted and re-powered by Primus himself, understood his task of being Optimus Prime's personal servant. Optimus Prime reminded Wing Saber that he was not Prime's property, and Wing Saber seemed to have issues figuring out who he was. He went with Optimus's team as they pursued Megatron into [[Alpha Q's universe|a fledgling new dimension]]. {{storylink|Ripped Up Space}}

Wing Saber eventually faced off with Shockblast again on [[Iron Planet]]. After making sure that his half-dozen buddies were backing him up, he gave the lone Decepticon a thorough trashing and captured him. Oh, brave Wing Saber! Later, he returned to Cybertron, {{storylink|Ambition}} and led underground resistance to Galvatron's invasion of the planet. {{storylink|Galvatron!}} {{storylink|Break Through}} Optimus finally arrived to help them, and he and Wing Saber linked up once more to stand up against Galvatron. {{storylink|The Omega Train}} They took a direct hit from the planet's [[energon grid]], however, and went down in flames. Wing Saber was left unconscious, and was nearly destroyed by Galvatron until the Omnicons arrived to restore him. Some time after Galvatron's defeat, Wing Saber underwent a falling out with Optimus Prime involving the life of a stranded astronaut and took off into space. {{storylink|United (episode)|United}} He returned during the search for the [[Cyber Planet Key]]s when he encountered the [[Omega Frequency]] wave after the [[Velocitron|Speed Planet]] Key was inserted into the [[Omega Lock]] on [[Earth]]. He approached the Earth at a breakneck speed, blazing like a meteor. Reaching the volcanic island where his comrades were doing battle with the Decepticons, he nailed Megatron with missiles before the Decepticon could fire his Death Machine Gun at Optimus Prime. Jetfire, while not entirely happy to see Wing Saber again, provided him with an Earth vehicle mode, a powerful fighter-bomber. Wing Saber now showed signs of a new, defiant attitude toward his former allies, even to the point of violence. He fired at Hot Shot's feet when the latter questioned him once, but cooled down, with Jetfire explaining to a worried Lori that "That's just how he is." However, Wing Saber quickly found himself part of the team again, taking to the air to dogfight with Megatron and keep him away from Starscream and the Omega Lock. {{storylink|Assault}}

Wing Saber continued to battle Megatron while Optimus Prime and Vector Prime pursued the Lock, and later rescued Vector Prime after Starscream's growth to skyscraper size caused an eruption. [[Thunderblast (Decepticon)|Thunderblast]] attempted to stop them from leaving, but was defeated by Wing Saber's [[Cyber Key]] cannon. {{storylink|Starscream (episode)|Starscream}}

Several attempts to take Starscream down were made, all of which failed. After Starscream thwarted one attempt by filling the air between him and the Autobots with chunks of rock, Wing Saber was reminded of the mission in the Chaar asteroid belt. He suggested trying the same trick again, and attempted to link up with Optimus. The attempt failed, but Prime agreed the method from the first attempt to clear the asteroids worked. Wing Saber and Prime flew together through the boulders to reach clear sky, which led to reviving his ability to combine with Optimus Prime to create their Sonic Wing Mode. Wing Saber took the place of Prime's Super Mode backpack,lending his leader his weapons and his powerful jet engines. In the battle to reclaim the Lock and Keys from Galvatron, Wing Saber once again linked up with Prime into Sonic Wing Mode.
