Nebulos (sometimes called Nebulon) is a planet inhabited by organic lifeforms, most notably a race of humanoids called Nebulans or Nebulons. These beings have found themselves involved with the Transformers in several different dimensions within the multiverse and are usually responsible for or deeply involved in the Headmaster, Targetmaster, and Powermaster technologies.

The physical appearance of Nebulans varies greatly by continuity, as they originated in the toyline wearing robotic armor. As such, each continuity to feature the planet has had free rein to imagine what the inhabitants looked like underneath.

Generation 1
Marvel Comics continuity
Nebulans appear to be essentially identical to humans from Earth.

A planet of humanoids that had lived without war for thousands of years. A group of Autobots led by Fortress Maximus sought to relocate to Nebulos in order to escape their own millenia-old conflict on Cybertron, but their arrival created dissension and mistrust within the Nebulan community. The arrival of a group of Decepticons led by Scorponok soon afterward only escalated these tensions, and Nebulos' age of peace was lost as citizens binary-bonded to Transformers on both sides of the conflict to become Headmasters and Targetmasters.

Realizing the damage that was being done to Nebulos' once-peaceful culture, the Autobots abandoned the planet to join Transformers already on the planet Earth, believing (correctly) that the Decepticons would pursue them off-Nebulos.

After this the citizens of Nebulos tainted their own energy sources so as to be poisonous to any Transformers that might seek to return to their world. When Decepticons Darkwing and Dreadwind arrived soon after the departure of the other Transformers, they soon found themselves victim of this poisoning, and lay dormant for a time. They were later revived by Nebulan traitors Hi-Test and Throttle, who had stolen power-conversion plans that eventually created the Powermasters. Hi-Q, the creator of this process, eventually binary-bonded with a reborn Optimus Prime, and several of his staff joined with other Autobots, in order to combat the threat posed by Darkwing and Dreadwind. They, too, eventually left Nebulos to join the other Transformers on Earth.

American animated continuity
Nebulons are extremely human-like aliens who possess green skin and dark green or white hair. Their facial features seem to tend towards a rather Native American cast. Some of the oldest of their ruling class, the Hive, appear to have had cyborg alterations or even taken on fully robotic bodies. (The robotic Hive members look identical to Lithonians.)

Nebulos was a world whose inhabitants were enslaved by the Hive, a group of eleven Nebulon telekinetics whose focus on development of their mental powers had caused their bodies to wither, led by Lord Zarak. The populace was mainly forced to do routine farm work, watched over by the machines which the Hive controlled telepathically.

Several Transformers crashed on Nebulos. A small band of Nebulon rebels, led by Gort, captured the Autobots, believing them to be Hive machines. The Decepticons were captured by the Hive. Convincing the rebels that they are not Hive machines, the Autobots volunteered to help, offering up four of their own to serve as Headmasters, with Nebulon partners inside their heads to serve as secondary operators.

Zarak demanded his own Headmasters, but Cyclonus only wished to offer up the Decepticon animals for this. The rest offered their weapons, which Zarak willingly accepted. The Autobots learned of this and adapted the new Targetmaster designs.

Zarak rebuilt a Hive facility into Scorponok, only to be countered by Fortress Maximus, an old Hive city converted into a Headmaster body by Spike Witwicky and Cerebros. Defeated, the Hive and the Decepticons fled in Scorponok.

Dreamwave Comics continuity
No native Nebulan, sans *-master armor, is ever seen in the DW books, and the world itself only appears in the More Than Meets The Eye guidebook and one panel of the War Within comic. Dreamwave's Nebulon, like much of its continuity, is built from a fusion of previous iterations.

Some basics from the More Than Meets The Eye guide: Nebulon is the fourth world of its system. It has a dual set of rings circling it and multiple moons. It is inhabited by many wild organic lifeforms and the humanoid Nebulan species. The moons circling Nebulon contain their own civilizations. One of these is the Hive Moon, which is home to a green-skinned, somewhat insectoid off-shoot of the Nebulan race.

IDW Publishing continuity
Here Nebulans are a hairless, green OR redish-pink skinned humanoid race with pointy ears. Their eyes are black where a humans are white and feature large, perhaps light-reflective, yellow pupils. They have a bit of a vampiric look to human eyes.

The architecture of Nebulos strongly favors domes, rounded bulbous towers, and organic curves. Many of the buildings have a "cracked" ancient look to the outside and green moss-like growth can be seen in patches on their exteriors. The technology level appears significantly in advance of Earth.

Scorponok has had ties to Nebulos, having used businessman Mo Zarak's corporation as a front for his own operations: creating a fusion of Nebulan and Cybertronian technology that seems to be a precursor to the various *-master technologies. These operations were apparently foiled by the timely intervention of Ultra Magnus. Skorponok, however, escaped.

Later Nevulos was the site of operations for a Decepticon infitration team including Ruckus, Darkwing, Dreadwind, and Skullcruncher among others. It became the first target of the resurrected Thunderwing and was at least partially, if not totally devastated by his attack. The post-Thunderwing status of the planet and its inhabitants remains unrevealed.

Unicron Trilogy
Following the conclusion of the Energon War, the Autobot Jetfire spent some time on the planet Nebulon. There he picked up a new accent from the locals, which to some human ears resembles that of Australians. Sort of.

Little else is known of this version of Nebulon, other than that its pea soup is notably thick.

At the dawn of time, Primus created new life, the 13 original Transformers, to crew his planetary form into battle against his eternal nemesis Unicron. One of these 13, his original name now lost to the mists of time, turned against his siblings, his creator, and his universe, and betrayed them all.

As Vector Prime was constructed to safeguard Space/Time, this robot's function was to oversee the primal force of entropy, the aging and disolution of order in this universe as presage to a new creation. However, this guardian of entropy became obssessed with the darker side of chaos and death, and in the black place these urges lead him, the betrayer found a new god, more suited to his nature. He turned against Primus and became the Fallen.

Now he is a being of power, darkness, and absolute dedication to Unicron. At the end of the first battle between the two Gods, for his treachery, the Fallen was sealed into extradimensional limbo along with his new master.

He is also on fire.
The War Within: The Dark Ages
Approximately 7 million years ago, Optimus Prime and Megatron were lost in a space bridge accident. This accident weakened the barrier between reality and the dimension in which the Fallen was trapped, allowing the Fallen to eventually break free and return to Cybertron. He was intent on initiating "The Unbinding," which would break the Seal of Primus and herald the Second Coming of Unicron.

To accomplish this task, he recruited a trio of Decepticon outcasts, Bludgeon, Mindwipe, and Bugly, who hungered for a command of the occult, which the Fallen could grant. As per the Fallen's instructions, the recruits were to round up four Transformers with "unique Sparks," Hot Spot, Jetfire, Blitzwing, and Grimlock. When the recruits faltered, the Fallen stepped in, singlehandledly abducting Blitzwing from his well-guarded holding cell and besting the powerhouse Grimlock.

The four, dubbed enigmatically the "Angles of Dissolution," awakened strapped to a four-paneled apparatus deep within the core of Cybertron, the Well of All Sparks. Though a combined army of forces from several factions penetrated the Fallen's operation, his defeat came only when Primus was roused from his slumber and condemned his wayward creation to an explosive demise. The War Within: The Dark Ages
Trivia
*The Fallen was created by Pat Lee, his first (and only) original Transformers character. The early design concept not only lacked the Fallen's characteristic mouthplate, but differed incredibly from the final product. Envisioned as a medieval, ancient-looking Transformer, he glowed like a furnace, though he was not depicted as being perpetually on fire until Andrew Wildman pencilled his appearances in The Dark Ages and the colorists caught on.

*When questioned about him constantly being aflame, War Within writer Simon Furman stated that the Fallen is always on fire "because it looks cool".

*The Fallen's altmode, a tank, though designed, was never used in-fiction.

*Very little of the Fallen's backstory is given in his actual fictional appearances, leaving much of The Dark Ages somewhat confusing on its own. Helpful inserts from the More Than Meets the Eye profile books and DK's Transformers: The Ultimate Guide, published around the same time, spelled out more.

71.235.137.236:

Transformation is the process by which a Transformer alters his form between modes. It should not be confused with reformatting a type of full-body upgrade.

Maintaining a transformed state requires a constant output of energy. The 'base' state for a Transformer seems to vary- sometimes robot, sometimes vehicle or skirmish mode. Most Beast Warriors seem to have their beast mode as their base state.

Transformation is a mentally rigorous task, requiring the transformer to focus on reconfiguring all the elements of his body in a way he or she isn't used to thinking about.
In the Beast Era, this difficult task was choreographed by an on board computer that reconfigured the transformers body for them. Post-reformatting, the new technorganic forms granted to Cybertron's inhabitants lacked on board computers, requiring them to re-learn the mental disciplines involved.

Try turning on your back and walking spider-style like that kid in The Poltergeist. Not easy, is it?

Special Cases
"Quick-Changers"
Some Transformers, specifically the Autobot Jumpstarters and the Decepticon Battle Chargers, are specifically designed to transform much faster than your average transformer, usually taking less than half of an Earth second to switch from robot to alt-mode or vice versa. How much of this abillity is physical and how much mental is unknown.

"Multi-Changers"
Robots with multiple transformations (tripple changers, et al.) are a special case. Though there seems to be some aspect of natural aptitude at play in one's ability to master multiple forms, and of course the special physical construction granting those forms- the balance of the matter seems to be one of training. Most six-changers are said to have mastered their plethora of transformations through rigorous study.

"Adaptable Alt. Form"
Some groups of Transformers such as the Go-Bots use a process similar to reformatting to more radically alter their forms while transforming. This ability to start with one robot and alternate form tant transform easily to entirely different cariations without extensive mechanical work comes from unique metals in the Go-Bots' bodies, and does not apply to most Transformers.

The Action Master Skyfall appears to possess something akin to this abillity however.

Fiction
Marvel Comics
Unicron was the first Transformer, fashioning his metal prison into a robotic semblance of his original form. Primus, watching froma distance was all like- "Oh snap, robots that turn into things? why didn't I think of that?"

Animated continuity
Transformation was an Autobot innovation, developed during their first war with the Decepticons when it became apparent that they could not match their firepower and strength. The art of transformation allowed the Autobots to disguise their forms, thereby allowing for stealthy attacks on their enemies. This strategy met with great success, and the Decepticons were defeating, allowing the era of peacetime known as the Golden Age of Cybertron to settle in. The Decepticons subsequently adopted transformation technology themselves, coupled with robot-mode flight powers, and re-ignited the civil war.

The city Transformers Metroplex and Trypticon are both specifically stated to possess devices know as transforming cogs that control their transformation processes, and are essential to allow them to transform at all. However, no other Transformers are ever noted to have these doo-dads in them, so it's not clear if all Transformers require them, or if Metroplex and Trypticon are a special case, perhaps because of their size.

Transformation is not a trait limited to Cybertronians. The Quintessons later accquired the technology, presumably using it to create Sharkticons, while creatures as far afield as the lipoles of Io displayed the ability.

(Note: It was originally intended for the Lithones to be able to transform as well, but this idea was nixed. The goal of this technology was to allow Transformers to survive an impending environmental collapse on their home planet Cybertron. Even Megatron rejected the concept as unnatural and repulsive. Both cases where the technology was implimented ended in disaster as the melding of the robots mind with the shell was improperly alliened or hastily executed. Subjet one, Thunderwing, became unfathomably powerful but totally insane and destructive. Subject two, Bludgeon, tried to rush the process and ended up comatose inside his new shell.

A term coined by the fandom, Gold Plastic Syndrome (commonly shorthanded to GPS) is used to describe the phenomenon of a toy's plastic decomposing and becoming brittle to the point of shattering or crumbling under minimal-stress conditions. This is different from the relatively more common stress-fracture type of plastic breakage that can occur in some Transformers toys. All noted instances of GPS have occured in hard, glossy gold-colored plastics that appear to have a "swirl" to their coloraton.

GPS is notably widespread among toys made in the tail-end of Generation 1, typically the second year of Pretenders and even some European-market exclusives, but examples have surfaced from lines as recent as Generation 2 and the Beast Wars series. Transformers toys are not the only ones to suffer from this; there have been reports of G.I. Joe and Visionaries toys' gold plastics also crumbling seemingly of their own accord.

The Cause of GPS
GPS Misconceptions
The most common misconception about GPS is that all gold-colored plastic can suffer from this rot. Only certain plastic grades (described above) have been noted to be susceptible to GPS crumbling; in the past few years, more durable, pliable plastics have become the norm for toy construction, so the gold plastic on more recent toys like Cannonball are highly unlikely to have the flaw.

Also, not every type of plastic breakage is the kind caused by GPS. In most instances of broken toys, visible stress marks appear long before any breakage in the form of discoloration (since these plastics havea bit more "give" to them), and are typically very clean "snaps" due to excess pressure. GPS breakages seemingly come from simple decomposition of the plastic without any form of excess force at all, and the breaks tend to leave shards of plastic and dust.
(Unlike other continuities, the disguised Autobots did shrink to human-sized in the Japanese continuity, and could make their armor disapear to become indistinguishable from ordinary humans. Nice someone worked that out.)

IDW comics
In it's most gruesome variation Pretender technology here was the invention of the Decepticon Thunderwing, and used living robotic tissue painfully culled from live (quite possibly unwilling) subjects to create a powerful symbiotic, living carapace. It is unknown if reserch will continue further (but it seems rather unlikely given the moral issues and planetary-level threat posed by Thunderwing).
