The space bridge appears in several Transformer continuities. The exact properties of the space bridge vary, but typically they serve as a more convienient means moving Transformers from one planet to another than the traditional means of space travel.

Space bridges are nonetheless distinct from Transwarp in that their primary function is movement through space, not time, though the time taken to traverse a space bridge seems to depend on the technology used.

Generation 1 Cartoon
The Space Bridge was apparently first conceived by Shockwave in 1984, as a means of transport back to Cybertron for the Decepticons stranded on Earth, and to allow them to ferry energon cubes to revitalize the planet. Capable of virtually instantaneous transport to other galaxies, the mechanics of the Space Bridge are not particularly clear, but appear to either involve some form of interdimensional displacement, or matter-energy transformation.

The Cybertronic end of the Space Bridge is a fixture in Shockwave's command centre, where it takes the form of a cylindrical tube resembling an Earthen elevator, the top of which projects outside of the centre's dome; it is through this open end that transportees enter or depart. The Earth-based end of the Space Bridge is decidedly more flexible - the Decepticons frequently constructed new Space Bridges in various locations, normally in the form of a large metal rings. Early Earth-built Space Bridge access points proved somewhat unstable, and in order to shuttle energon cubes, transportees were required to ferry them over the bridge a small vehicle, which rolled into the ring on a train-like track, and then had to be piloted along a "beam of light" with particular concentration. Some Decepticons displayed pronounced horror at being chosen for this unenviable task, and in the very first practice run of the mechanism, the villains opted to use the captive Spike Witwicky, rather than risk any of their number. Megatron, however, soon proved able to traverse the bridge without a craft, and the technology was apparently refined so that transportees and energon cubes merely had to enter the ring on their own to make the journey.

The Space Bridge technology was taken to its ultimately extent when the Decepticons constructed three colossal pylons that would generate a "space pyramid," the apex of which extended to Cybertron's location in another galaxy. Using this, Cybertron was transported into Earth's orbit for a brief period, but was later blasted off into space to save the planet. Cybertron remained in the Milky Way galaxy, however - perhaps the reduced distance between it and Earth could account for the increased safety of Space Bridge transit. The process could, however, still go wrong, as it did when the Decepticons attempted to convert a baseball field into a new Space Bridge site, and a malfunction blasted a small group of Transformers to an alien world of giants. The Space Bridge was also used for planetary transportation once more when the Combaticon Onslaught wired his missile guidance systems into it and used it's powers to redirect the orbit of Earth, intended to send it spiralling into the sun, only to be stopped by an Autobot-Decepticon team-up.

Headmasters
Although the Space Bridge fell into disuse when the Autobots relcaimed Cybertron in 2005, rather than dismantle it since Vector Sigma maintained an Autobot power balance on the planet, thereby rendering the Decepticons unable to use it - it is apparent that they studied and duplicated the technology, installing their own Space Bridge network that allowed for easy transport between Cybertron, Earth and the planet Athenia, with fixed Space Bridge receptors in each base (the transport beam was, of course, now the traditional Autobot orange, as opposed to the Decepticons' iconic purple). Their failure to destroy the Decepticon Space Bridge, however, came back to bite them when the release of the Matrix's energy to cure the Hate Plague caused Vector Sigma to destabilise in 2011, allowing the Decepticons to use the Space Bridge to invade Cybertron.

When Mars was destroyed by Scorponok, the gravimetric balance of the solar system was disrupted, making Space Bridge travel to Earth unstable. This soon ceased to be an issue, however, when the Decepticons headed off on an interplanetary energy raid, and, in order to slow the Autobots down, Sixshot destroyed the Earth-based Space Bridge, causing a chain reaction that detonated the entire network.

(Note: The destruction of the Space Bridge left the only means to travel to Earth as the Trainbots and Battleship Maximus. After the Headmasters series, this reduced ability to travel to Earth is one of the reasons for the heavy human involvement in the following series, Masterforce, since Transformers are mostly unable to join the battle on Earth themselves.

Marvel Comics
(Note: Events from the UK-only comic stories are in italics.)

The space bridge was built by Lord Straxus' Cybertronic Decepticons, in response to the discovery that Megatron's lost group of Decepticons was alive and had set up operations on Earth. The bridge, which resembles a normal Earthen suspension bridge when not in use, has two halves; one which which remains stationary on Cybertron, and another which teleports to Earth. Passing through the bridge's central arch transports objects across vast distances, instantly and painlessly. Although a properly functioning space Bridge is a far more pleasant mode of transportation than the more fuel-efficient Autobot version, the Trans-Time Dimensional Portal, an improperly calibrated space bridge will annihilate any object or being who attempts to pass through its arch. Lord Straxus illustrated this fact when Blaster sent him over the edge during transit.

The original space bridge was built from the vast body of Spanner, a neutral scientist who had been captured by Straxus's forces and forced to design the Bridge. After the space bridge was almost completely destroyed, a new Bridge was built to replace it.

Dreamwave Generation 1 Comics
Unicron Trilogy
Space bridges are the main mode of traveling in the Unicron Trilogy. Unlike their Generation 1 counterparts, they do not appear to need use of a fixed device at both ends.

They appear to change in variation from series to series, although this is likely simply due to art direction. In Armada, the Transformers are 'stretched' into warp gates, while in Energon and Cybertron, space bridges tend to appear as large holes in the sky that may or may not have a clear ramp leading into it.

After the Headmasters series, this reduced ability to travel to Earth is one of the reasons for the heavy human involvment in the following series, Masterforce, since Transformers are mostly unable to join the battle on Earth themselves.

Lord Straxus illustrated this fact whenBlaster sent him over the edge during transit.

The original space bridge was built from the vast body of Spanner, a neutral scientist who had been captured by Straxus's forces and forced to design the Bridge. After the space bridge was almost completely destroyed, a new Bridge was built to replace it.
Beast Wars Neo
After the destruction of Unicron during the climax of Transformers: The Movie, his lifeforce raced through time and space where it riddled itself into the planet Gaia and became known as Angolmois energy. After a botched attempt by Galvatron to steal all the Angolmois, the energy was sealed into capsules and scattered across the galaxy.

Big Convoy, leader of the Maximal new recruits, and Magmatron, the Predacon Emperor of Destruction, raced across the galaxy collecting the Angolmois capsules. Eventually, after numerous rascally hijinks, the two factions recovered all the capsules.

The the Blentrons came out of nowhere and beat the ever living CRAP out of both teams and stole the capsules. The Blentrons, absurdly powerful and able to bend time and space at their leisure, had no trouble stealing all the capsules and trapping the Maximals and Magmatron in a wormhole, leaving the Predacons to bicker over leadership.

As it turns out, the Blentrons were created by Unicron. Loyal to their God, they released all the Angolmois into the corpse of Galvatron, reviving Unicron. Unicron then absorbed the last remaining bit of loose Angolmois; the Blentrons-themselves. That's gratitude for ya!
:Tidal Wave is a Decepticon from the Unicron Trilogy series. He took the name Mirage after he took a new body.

Tidal Wave is a powerhouse, one of the largest Decepticons under Megatron's command. His power is backed up by a brain that doesn't exactly run at optimal speeds; he's not so much stupid as he is single-minded and easily frustrated. In battle he is merciless, an unyeilding engine of destruction.

He is unquestionably loyal to Megatron and his ideals, and will quickly sign up with anyone that promises power to the Decepticon cause.

Tidal Wave's Mini-Con partner is Ramjet
Japanese name: Shockwave (Armada), Shock Fleet (Energon, Mirage body)

Tidal Wave was originally brought to Earth by the Decepticon stratigist Thrust in an attempt to bolster the Decepticon forces so that they could obtain the Requiem Blaster. Thrust claimed Tidal Wave was a general, an unsubstantiated claim that seems rather out of place considering Tidal Wave's...lack of grace. Although he often appeared stupid and lumbered about, Tidal Wave provided immense firepower and a combiner addition to Megatron and proved to be a loyal soldier throughout the campaign.

Tidal Wave was present at the meeting between the Autobots and Decepticons during the Unicron Battles in which the two sides formed a temporary truce, notably shaking hands with Jetfire.

Energon
Voice actor Doug Parker (US) Jin Yamanoi Japan

After the end of the Unicron Battles, Tidal Wave loyally followed Galvatron's last request - that the Decepticons remain at peace with the Autobots. During the ten year period that followed, Tidal Wave somewhere along the line changed not only his color palette but his occupation - instead of being a warrior, he was now a guardian of the energon mines in the Sol system's asteroid belt.

Tidal Wave's post was one of the first targets of the Terrorcon hordes. After being attacked and abducted, he was brought to Scorponok and Alpha Quintesson's base of operations, where they convinced him to side with them by promising to revive Megatron. Although he clearly disliked Scorponok, Tidal Wave carried out orders in attacking other energon reserves run by the Autobots until Megatron returned. Following this, he continued raiding Autobot bases, only under Megatron's orders.

Tidal Wave would later show disdain for the madman Decepticon recruit Shockblast. During a battle on Cybertron, an energon tower collapsed on top of Tidal Wave due to a shot from Shockblast. Megatron called for a retreat and hauled Tidal Wave's damaged body back into space, where the giant Decepticon was reformatted into Mirage.

Mirage traded his gigantic, hulking body for a smaller, sleeker, and speedier form. He also apparently gained an upgrade in intelligence, although he also started to buddy up with Demolishor and Snow Cat to form a comedy relief trio. He continued to serve Megatron throughout the war for energon, even (in the Japanese version) gaining a semi-romantic infatuation with him.

When Galvatron flung himself into the energon sun to destroy Unicron's spark, Mirage loyally followed after him and ended his life.

(Throughout the Transformers: Energon anime, Tidal Wave/Mirage had the habit of repeating his name as a sort of battle cry. This, unsurprisingly, did not help deter his reputation as an idiot.)

Dreamwave Comics continuity
Armada
Tidal Wave was little seen in the Armada comic from Dreamwave, appearing only in a panel or two in the final story.

Energon
In Energon, Tidal Wave was recruited by Scorponok, joining the Terrorcons. While he went on several raids and missions with the Terrorcons, it became clear to him that he wasn't the most respected of the team. Alpha Quintesson, however, saw something in him, and reformatted him into Mirage, noting as he did so that Scorponok had fallen out of Unicron's favor.

Playstation 2 Video Game
Tidal Wave, in his combined battleship mode, was stationed as a relay and refuel point off a small chain of islands in the Mid-Atlantic. The Autobots made their way inside him to take out the Decepticlone platoons inside and destroy him, but discovered that Tidal Wave wasn't merely a transport. They escaped just in time to avoid being crushed as Tidal Wave transformed into his titanic robot mode.

Tidal Wave walked around the island chain in the deep waters, unloading volleys of missiles, lasers, and the occasional Jet Sniper on the tiny-by-comparison Autobots. Despite his impressive size, firepower, and nigh-impenetrable armor, the Autobots mamaged to do enough damage to Tidal Wave's one weak point -his face- to cause a chain reaction that caused multiple exlposions inside him, sending him falling face-first to the ocean floor.

: Tidal Wave is a robot that is made up of three different aquatic vehicles; an aircraft carrier, a double-bowed battleship, and a troop-landing craft. All three can combine to form a single gigantic warship, which from there can transform to robot mode without having to separate. Each smaller craft has its own gimmick; the carrier has a working storage elevator for Tidal Wave's Mini-Con partner Ramjet, the battleship has Mini-Con Powerlinx-activated swiveling cannons (also usable in robot mode), and the landing craft opens up to reveal seats for Mini-Cons to sit on.

: The Takara and Hasbro versions are considerably different, even through they only have a single difference. The Takara version uses purple plastic in the place of Hasbro's green. While this makes the Takara version somewhat more like the show portrayal, the color layouts are still off.

Energon
Several portions of his body were cast in transpartent green plastic, suggesting that his body was now infused with Decepticon-energy Energon.

:Later, Tidal Wave was released under the name Mirage as a sleek assault speedboat with multiple spring-loaded missile launchers, as well as fold-out wings for his "Hyper Mode". The initial releases of Mirage were one-per-case, and part of a wave that saw limited distribution due to a glut of early product on the shelves. However, Mirage was later put into "Mega-Buy" multi-packs at a buy-one-get-one-free price at numerous chains, including Toys 'R' Us and Wal*Mart, relieving much of the demand for the item.

: This mold was also redecoed into Dreadwing.

While he went on several raids and missions with the Terrorcons, it became clear to him that he wasn't the most respected of the team. Alpha Quintesson, however, saw something in him, and reformatted him into Mirage, noting as he did so that Scorponok had fallen out of Unicron's favor.

Omega Supreme is one of the Guardians of Cybertron who serves under the command of Omega Sentinel and is a powerful Autobot protector. He believes that unyielding resolve has no conqueror and will not hesitate to engage even the strongest foe. He is composed of a "battle train", a warship, and a small robot that transforms into a larger head for their combined robot mode.
Omega Supreme is an ancient Cybertronian who single-handedly battled and defeated Unicron way back in the distant past of Cybertron. Subsequent to this, he spent millions of years in stasis below the surface of the planet. He was awakened when Primus guided Doctor Jones to his location, and embued him with the Spark of Combination. This allowed Omega Supreme to join the Autobots' struggle against the Decepticons and Unicron, in which he would combine with Optimus Prime to form the powerful Optimus Supreme.

Tidal Wave was present at the meeting between the Autobots and Decepticons during the Unicron Battles in which the two sides formed a tempoary truce, notably shaking hands with Jetfire.

Tidal Wave would later show disdain for the madman Decepticon recruit Shockblast (whose design, interestingly enough, is based off the G1 character who holds the same name as Tidal Wave's Japanese counterpart - Shockwave ).

He continued to serve Megatron throughout the war for energon, even gaining a semi-romantic infatuation with him. Well...at least in the Japanese version.

When Galvatron flung himself into the energon sun to destroy Unicron's spark, Mirage loyally followed after him and ended his life.

Throughout the Transformers: Energon anime, Tidal Wave/Mirage had the habit of repeating his name as a sort of battle cry. This, unsurprisingly, did not help deter his reputation as an idiot.

Alpha Quintesson began the war over Energon by providing the Terrorcon group -led by Scorponok- with enhanced powers and "Hyper Modes", sending them to the undefended Earth to drain it of the newly-discovered pure Energon ore. At the same time, he sent his four Horsemen (three Autobots and a Decepticon that had been captured and brainwashed before Unicron was defeated ten years previous) to Cybertron to wreak havoc, preventing the Autobots from getting to Earth.

Unfortunately for Alpha, the Horsemen were repelled by the Omnicons and the newly-enhanced Autobots, which gave them the time needed to reach Earth and sink the Terrorcons' plans. For a time, Alpha Quintesson's involvement in the war was minimal, but when he returned, it was in a big way; unleashing thouseands of Terrorcon drones to decimate Los Angeles, Tokyo, Toronto and Moscow.

But the Decepticons weren't the only ones Alpha Quintesson was working with towards his goal of restoring the shell of Unicron. Perhaps more dangerous than the Terrorcons was Alpha-Quintesson's hidden ally, Avalon, a member of the High Council, Cybertron's ruling body!

(Note: The Energon comic ended before its storyline was completed due to the bankruptcy of Dreamwave, and as such, the extent of Alpha Quintesson and Avalon's planning is -and may likely remain- unknown.)
(The Action Masters had transforming partners and vehicles, remember.)

:The main gimmick involves his three different faces; pressing a trigger on the toy's back switches from face to face. The bed of tentacles that serves as the toy's base uses a gear-wheel system to spin his three bendable tentacles around when the toy is rolled forward or backwards. He also has a spring-loaded missile launcher that can be mounted on one of the numerous 5mm-wide weapon-ports on Alpha Quintesson's body.

Tidal Wave would later show disdain for the madman Decepticon recruit Shockblast (whose design, interestingly enough, is based off the G1 character who holds the same name as Tidal Wave's Japanese counterpart - Shockwave ).

Tidal Wave was present at the meeting between the Autobots and Decepticons during the Unicron Battles in which the two sides formed a tempoary truce, notably shaking hands with Jetfire.

Tidal Wave would later show disdain for the madman Decepticon recruit Shockblast (whose design, interestingly enough, is based off the G1 character who holds the same name as Tidal Wave's Japanese counterpart - Shockwave ).

Tidal Wave is a Decepticon from the Unicron Trilogy series.

Tidal Wave was originally brought to Earth by the Decepticon stratigist Thrust in an attempt to bolster the Decepticon forces so that they could obtain the Requiem Blaster. Thrust claimed Tidal Wave was a general, an unsubstantiated claim that seems rather out of place considering Tidal Wave's...lack of grace. Although he often appeared stupid and lumbered about, Tidal Wave provided immense firepower and a combiner addition to Megatron and proved to be a loyal soldier throughout the campaign.

Tidal Wave was present at the meeting between the Autobots and Decepticons during the Unicron Battles in which the two sides formed a tempoary truce, notably shaking hands with Jetfire.
