Synopsis
On Cybertron, many millions of years ago, the Autobots are on the verge of extinction. Eons of war with the Decepticons, their bitter enemies, have drained the planet's once plentiful resources. Autobots Wheeljack and Bumblebee are scraping together energy conductors, and narrowly avoid capture by a Decepticon patrol. They arrive at Iacon, the Autobots' headquarters. There, Optimus Prime, the Autobot leader, confers with his lieutenants Jazz, Prowl, and Trailbreaker on the plan to leave Cybertron on a mission to search for new sources of energy. This plot is overheard by the Decepticon spies Soundwave and Laserbeak.

Inside their base, Decepticon leader Megatron plots to intercept the Autobots, and leaves his lieutenant Shockwave in charge of Cybertron.

The Autobots blast off aboard an Autobot spaceship, followed by the Decepticon cruiser. An asteroid collision forces them to use up most of their energy clearing a path through the resulting storm. The Decepticons take advantage of this vulnerability and attack. Both ships spin out of control, crashing on nearby Earth.

Four million years pass. It is the year 1984, and volcanic activity stirs the half-buried Ark, awakening the computer systems aboard. Teletraan I sends out a Sky Spy satellite to reconnoiter this new world, and scans examples of terrestrial machinery in order to reformat the Transformers into new alt modes. The Decepticon Skywarp is awakened first, and he revives the other Decepticons. Megatron observes that much time has passed since the crash. An impudent Starscream leaves a parting shot at the dormant Autobots, unwittingly knocking Optimus Prime into the repair beam and causing him to be the first Autobot to be revived.

Megatron decrees that their mission is to drain Earth of its resources in order to build an ultimate weapon and conquer the universe (as you do). To start, they'll need a base of operations, so he puts Starscream in charge of converting the area for the construction of a new star cruiser. The Decepticon Rumble trashes a nearby power station to serve as raw materials.

Meanwhile, Optimus Prime dispatches Hound and Cliffjumper to scout the area. They find the Decepticons, and Cliffjumper brashly takes a shot at Megatron. He misses, and the Decepticons unleash Laserbeak in pursuit. Hound is blasted and injured.

Autobot medic Ratchet and Hauler come to fetch Hound. Meanwhile, Decepticons Thundercracker and Reflector spot an Earth vehicle coming to investigate the destruction of the power station. Ravage intercepts the vehicle, frightening the human workers away.

Hound is repaired, and reports what he overheard: that the Decepticons are on the hunt for energy. Prime has Jazz assemble a battle group to go after them. The Decepticons attack an off-shore oil rig, where William "Sparkplug" Witwicky and his son Spike work. They begin gathering energon cubes, but are interrupted by the Autobots.

A battle erupts on the drilling platform. Megatron blasts the rig's supports, tipping it into the ocean. It bursts into flames. Realizing the humans are in danger, Optimus Prime tries to save Spike and Sparkplug while the Decepticons retreat with their energon plunder.
Notes
Animation or technical glitches
Minor art and coloring errors
* Soundwave's mouthplate doesn't move during his "Autobots are set to launch" line.
* As Megatron gives Shockwave his orders, Starscream is missing his canopy lines, and Soundwave's eject button is blue, while his backpack is white.
* The retracting segments of Iacon's dome appear to come out of solid, unbroken metal.
* Sideswipe's missing his shoulder launcher as he mans an Ark console.
* Starscream has a red "collar" around his neck as he prepares the tractor beam.
* When Soundwave tosses Ratchet into a console aboard the Ark, the Autobot Medic is sporting a Decepticon symbol in the center of his chest windshield, most likely the result of the animator carrying over Soundwave's design.
* As Starscream fires on the Autobot ship, the top segment of his canopy is red instead of gray in some frames.
* Part of Megatron's fusion cannon is white as he says "we'll set up here".
* Soundwave's eject button is blue instead of white as Megatron orders him to plan the new space cruiser.
* Megatron is missing his barrel as he speaks to his newly revived troops. In a closeup, he has a "five o'clock shadow", as the central segment of his face is a darker shade than the rest of it.

* After landing at the power plant, Soundwave's eject button is blue, instead of... y'know what? Let's just say the colorists screwed up this little detail all the freaking time, and leave it at that.
* Cliffjumper's mirror housings are white instead of red as he delivers his "moonbeam" line.
* Ratchet's Autobot symbol is gray before he jumps off the cliff.
* Prime's running light housings are white instead of red as he orders Jazz to organize a battle unit.
* In the pan across the battle unit, Sideswipe's helm is red instead of black, and the top of Trailbreaker's chest is white instead of black.
* The center segment of Megatron's fusion cannon is white as the wrenches & etc. bounce off of him.
* Soundwave's cheekguards are blue instead of white as he starts making energon cubes.
* Starscream is missing his wing insignia as Megatron returns to his robot form.

Not-so-minor errors

* The Decepticon "welcoming committee" is often stated to contain a constantly-changing roster, but close examination reveals that it's almost consistent:
** The initial shot shows Starscream, Skywarp, and Thundercracker.
** The second shot shows a vaguely Thundercracker-colored Seeker (the blue is deeper than Thundercracker's color, and there's extra bits of white and gray) alongside two completely different Seekers (a purple one with a flamethrower, and an orange one).
** The third shot, as Wheeljack barrels through them, shows a total of five Seekers, too small to be identified. If that darker blue guy from the second shot was supposed to be Thundercracker, and you're willing to believe that several of the Decepticons managed to be off-camera in all the other shots, then the numbers actually add up. (Your wiki editors acknowledge that this probably was a goof.)
** The final shot of the group shows Starscream ordering Skywarp and Thundercracker to pursue the Autobots; both have lines in their normal voice, so they were clearly supposed to be there.
* Starscream's two lines during this scene are performed by two different actors in two different voices, neither resembling the high rasp he'll shortly establish as his normal voice. The second voice is clearly Frank Welker, sounding close to his Megatron voice.
* Bumblebee steps out of Wheeljack and immediately fires a shot in the completely opposite direction from their attackers. Was he testing his gun??
* Bumblebee is repeatedly shown to be a hovercar... yet somehow he's got wheels and an axle when the Seekers manage to hit him.
* Bumblebee is repeatedly shown to be wider than Wheeljack in vehicle mode, yet he has no trouble driving right into Wheeljack's cargo compartment. He keeps driving in until he's completely out of sight, even though we can see at least half of the compartment.

* The Ark's exhaust comes from behind the thruster ports.
* Bluestreak is colored like Prowl as the Autobots stumble arund in the wake of the asteroid collision; Trailbreaker, meanwhile, has one white and one gray hand.
* Presumably, an impact is supposed to be knocking Jazz out of the pilot's seat; what the animation actually shows, however, is Prime saying "Jazz!", to which Jazz responds by spontaneously flying out of his seat.
* Immediately after a shot of Optimus Prime rallying his troops to prepare to repulse Decepticon boarders ("Prepare for battle!"), the same animation is re-used, but this time with Megatron's voice urging his troops to "Attack! Attack!" When the episode was re-done for the Generation 2 series, this scene was amended by placing a shot of Megatron sitting on this throne from earlier in the episode over the image, shouting the command. (In the same shot, Prowl's eye is missing.)
* A shot of Soundwave being kicked out of frame by Ironhide is immediately followed by Soundwave sparring with Ratchet.
* After Ratchet is thrown into the console, Optimus Prime and Megatron enter the frame, struggling with each other. Megatron is missing his fusion cannon in this shot, but it reappears when the angle changes to show them grappling as Prime asks for a status report.
* Ratchet is shown being thrown by Soundwave, but after Optimus Prime asks for a status report, Ratchet is seen fighting with Thundercracker on the other side of the room.
* As the above shot pans across the bridge to the right, we see Soundwave has teleported from one side of the bridge to the other, slumped against a console.
* In the pan shot on the Ark when the Transformers find out they're going to crash, there are TWO Soundwaves and TWO Starscreams.
* The voice that reports about g-forces is Prowl's, but he's struggling with Starscream and doesn't seem to have time to read a console or make a report or anything.
* Quite a few generic robots are mixed in among the identifiable inert Transformers in the crashed ship.
* The land around the volcano changes frequently between shots. Sometimes it's rocky desert; other times it's got forests and a river, sometimes both at once. This trend would continue throughout the whole series.
* Starscream has no transformation sound as he lands at the power plant.
* When Optimus Prime assigns Hound his mission, the establishing shot has Cliffjumper with Bumblebee's yellow colors.
* Hound's voice carries a soundproof-roof echo as he comments on how different Earth is.
* In the long shot of the Decepticons building their base, Soundwave appears in Sideswipe's colors.
* Hound says that he got shot in the drive train, but Laserbeak shot him topside. Did the shot go straight through him??
* Reflector's three component robots are standing shoulder-to-shoulder as they turn to look at the truck, but are standing in a line in the next shot.
* Right after the Insignia footage that comes after the scene in which Thundercracker is informing Soundwave about the approaching "Autobot", there is a picture of Spikes father and Wheeljack operaing a console. It's just visible for the fraction of a second, but still...
* Rumble isn't a big guy, but he should at least be a few feet taller than a human. He's shown the same height as Sparkplug.
* Ironhide and Starscream are shown sparring with poles, while Prowl and Thundercracker have a shootout from cover. In the very next shot, Ironhide is taking on Skywarp and Thundercracker, while Starscream is now busy with Huffer and Gears, and Prowl is grappling with a Reflector. In the shot after that, Prowl is suddenly free from Reflector and charging toward Skywarp.
* A red robot of indeterminate character model is shown retreating with the Decepticons. It looks a bit like an upside-down Sideswipe.
* When Rumble knocks Spike into the water, his father yells "Pike!" instead of "Spike". Perhaps he was meant to be warning his son about carnivorous fish, but of course pike live in fresh water, not salt.

Continuity errors
* Later episodes will go to some length to establish that Cybertron is outside of our galaxy. There's even some implication that it's not inside any galaxy, but that unlikely notion is put to the lie by the very first shots of this episode, which show its surface illuminated by an unseen sun, and the space around it filled with stars.
* Whether for reasons of cost (unlikely considering how much effort was expended on this episode's artwork) or to avoid confusing the kiddies, hardly any of the Transformers were designed to have Cybertronian robot modes (Laserbeak is the sole exception). Thus we get the strange phenomena of, for example, Jazz having a Porsche 911 bumper on his chest, four million years before Porsches were invented. This also leads to some strange transformations, with guys like Bumblebee and Wheeljack not having a single part from their vehicle forms visible in their robot modes.
* Soundwave is in robot mode outside of Iacon, not transforming back to lamppost mode until Jazz is practically on top of him. How could Jazz have failed to notice the big blue Decepticon right in front of him?

* During the scene in the Cybertronian Decepticon Headquarters, Shockwave is consistently drawn with two hands. This may not be an error per se, as he shows up a couple of other times with two hands, and plenty of characters can retract their hands and replace them with various gadgets and weapons, but it goes against his toy design and his established character model.
* Two asteroids in deep space just show up out of nowhere and collide? Right by the passing ship? The cosmic improbability beggars the imagination.
* Oddly enough, nobody opens fire during the scuffle when the Decepticons board the Ark... not even Megatron.
* The Transformers' interplanetary cruise is incredibly short. At no point do they engage any kind of faster-than-light drive, yet somehow they go from Cybertron to Earth in what seems to be a matter of minutes. The only possible gap that might account for this is the scene cut between the Decepticon launch and the asteroid collision.
* The animation would have us believe that the Autobot spacecraft has just been sticking out of the side of this active volcano for ages, without anybody noticing. The intended gist might have been that the eruption uncovered it, but the animation doesn't show it.

* Cliffjumper somehow stores on his person a cannon that's as big as he is.
* Okay, maybe it's not an actual error. But considering how many ordinary Transformers are shown to have enhanced visual abilities (Hot Rod, Rumble, Arcee, etc.) it seems a tad ridiculous that Thundercracker needs to use Reflector's camera mode to zoom in a little bit on the approaching truck. It's insanely ridiculous that Reflector produces Polaroid prints. He's not even that kind of camera! (More to the point, he should just be able to see what's visible through his own viewfinder.)
* While he is getting repaired by Ratchet, Hound refers to an Energon cube as "some kind of cube", implying that the Autobots don't know what Energon cubes are. The inference that energon cubes are a Decepticon invention holds true for almost the entirety of the pre-movie cartoon, during which time they are never used by the Autobots (something that is even made a plot point in "Traitor"). We say "almost" because of a contradictory flashback in "War Dawn" that shows what appear to be energon cubes being used by Autobots nine million years in the past. By the time of the movie, the Autobots are shown to have begun using the cubes, and continue to do so throughout the third season.
* How do the Autobots know where the Decpeticons are planning to attack? They organize their battle unit before the Decepticons even learn about the oil platform!
* During Jazz's roll-call of the Autobots, he neglects to call out Cliffjumper's name. The little red guy transforms anyway.
* The large cast frequently gave the animators trouble in remembering which secondary characters should or should not be present, especially concerning the Autobots. Thus, we frequently must catalog appearing/disappearing Autobots:
** Jazz's battle group consists of Prowl, Cliffjumper, Traibreaker, Wheeljack, Mirage, Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, and Ironhide. Even before they've left headquarters, the problems start, as Ironhide disappears and Ratchet takes his place. Ratchet is still with the group when they arrive.
** Bluestreak joins the group as they fly toward the oil rig.
** Huffer and Brawn are with them as they land on the platform.
** Gears is visible in a wide shot of the battle.
* In what universe is it legal for a fourteen-year-old American kid to be working on an oil rig, even with his father?
* Until the oil platform attack, the episode has consistently portrayed the Decepticon forces as Megatron, Soundwave, 3 tapes, 3 jets, and 3 Reflectors. Things start to fall apart here, as a dark blue jet is shown diving alongside Thundercracker. It gets much worse in the following episodes.
* The Transformers had a tendency to frequently exaggerate the capabilities of humans to survive being dropped, punched, swatted, hit, etc. As a main protagonist, Spike Witwicky was especially susceptible to this treatment; thus we catalog the adventures of Superhuman Spike!:
** Spike punches Rumble in the back without breaking or even seeming to hurt his fist.
** Spike survives being bashed aside by Rumble's metal fist without even bruising a rib.
* When Starscream fires his null-ray, ice appears on the machinery that the ray hits. However, a null ray only stops the flow of electricity; it doesn't cause freezing. (Megatron prompts him with the strange command to "activate the null ray", as if it's some external piece of equipment.)
* Flying Autobots:
** In this and the following two episodes, the Autobots are all shown flying just as easily as the Decepticons. Once the show went into full production, this ability mostly disappeared, with occasional exceptions due to special abilities (Wheeljack, Sideswipe, the Dinobots), and some scripting, animation and sound effect screwups. The change was, in part, to help distinguish the two forces (and perhaps because it doesn't make sense for the Autobots to drive places if they can just fly there instead).

Continuity notes
* As the first pilot episode, this episode establishes several iconic aspects of the cartoon and the entire Transformers brand. The planet Cybertron and its city Iacon both appear in many other media and continuities. The crash of the Ark and the four-million-year slumber of its inhabitants likewise recur in several other versions of the Generation 1 story.
* The orange Seeker from the "welcoming committee", visible for all of about two seconds, was retroactively established to be the neo-G1 character Sunstorm.

* We get a look at Cybertronic vehicle forms for Bumblebee, Wheeljack, Skywarp and Thundercracker, Jazz, Soundwave and Laserbeak.
* Trailbreaker's presence alongside Jazz and Prowl on Cybertron is just about the only indication of his "defense strategist" function in the cartoon.
* Three episodes from now, we will see that Shockwave was true to his word, and Cybertron has not changed one iota in four million years.
* The Decepticon vessel is last seen spiraling out of control, unpiloted, toward Earth. It will be rediscovered in the Season 2 episode "Microbots". The unnamed ship would finally be given a title almost 15 years later, when it was referred to as the Nemesis in the Beast Wars episode "Nemesis Part 1".
* The events of the Beast Wars cartoon take place during the 4 million years in which the Autobots and Decepticons lie dormant in the wreckage of the Ark... a time frame covered by about 5 seconds of footage in this episode.

* As the satellite-like probe (later dubbed a Sky Spy) leaves the Ark, we see a city skyline in the distance. While the cartoon's animation could never make up its mind about what was around the crashed ship (oceanside cliffs? desert? forests and rivers?), one might take this city to be Central City, later established to have jurisdiction over the land where the Autobot ship rests.

* Gadgets and powers:
** Wheeljack deploys a pair of tiny spinning blades from his front bumper, which lets him... drive through fire?
** Laserbeak spies with a pair of cylindrical doodads that come out of the side of his head.
** Rumble demonstrates his earth-quake-making power, which consists of banging the ground with a couple of big pile drivers that replace his arms. This will become one of the cartoon's most frequently-seen special powers, to the point that it eventually would carry over to the Marvel comics as well. (This power also seems to exclude Rumble himself from its effects, as the ground under him never cracks open.)
** Hound pops out a little wrist radar dish that lets him hear what the Decepticons are saying from some distance away.
** Soundwave can display graphics - the space cruiser, in this case - on his chest door.
** Cliffjumper somehow stores on his person a gun that's as big as he is. We don't want to know how he does this.
** He also has a little cannon that pops out of his vehicle mode's backside. His line about "it's a gas" would seem to be a reference to this being his glass gas weapon, but it acts like a straight-up laser.
** Laserbeak can launch one of his cannons and have it chase down Autobots on its own.
** Ratchet is shown splitting into his robot form and his repair bay; however, the repair bay is never seen again.
** Reflector, being a super-advanced space robot, can take a photograph and instantly spit out a paper print of the resulting image. Instant photographs?! It must be THE FUTURE!
** Starscream "activates the <s>noal</s> null ray", which freezes the device it's aimed at.

* A Grapple-like crane named Hauler is seen with Cliffjumper, recovering Hound; he's never seen again, however. Fans have speculated that this was to be an earlier release of Grapple's toy, aborted for reasons unknown.
* Energon cubes make their first appearance here. They have to be compressed before they convert the fuel they have been filled with into energon, at which point they glow a sort of yellowish-white iridescent-y rainbow-y sort of color. The "compressing a stack" aspect of the cubes was quickly done away with after the pilot mini-series, but the rainbow-glow would stick around for a little while before being phased out in favor of a pink-purple coloration that became the standard representation of energon cubes down through Transformers history.

Real-world references
* The Transformers made heavy use of the sound effects library that sprung out of the movie Star Wars. Fans have a tendency to make tiresome shocked exclamations that Laserbeak sounds like a TIE Fighter; it is therefore instructive to catalog these sound effects, which are used far more extensively than just a couple of TIE engine roars. About half a dozen sound effects tend to appear in nearly every episode, and at least a dozen total are known to have been used on The Transformers. In this episode:
** The sound of the Death Star firing to destroy Alderaan, and Alderaan's subsequent explosion, is used as Skywarp and Thundercracker strafe Bumblebee and Wheeljack, and again as they abandon their pursuit.
** The sound of the Seeker training sphere aboard the Millennium Falcon, along with Luke's lightsaber humming and igniting, is used as Soundwave begins making energon cubes.
* We also get the lesser-used Star Trek sliding door sound effect as Soundwave sends Laserbeak after Hound and Cliffjumper.

Japanese version
*When the Seeker fires the ring of flame around Bumblebee and Wheeljack from his flame-thrower, he shouts out the name of his "special attack" Dragonball Z-style. It was called the "Fire Attack", by the way.

*When Teletraan-1 releases the Sky Spy, additional narration describing the scene is added.

*Cut: Immediately after Skywarp says, "Megatron, my leader, you are alive again", a few seconds of the close-up of him and Megatron staring at each other and the fade away into the next scene is cut. Megatron's line, "Quickly, we must revive the other Decepticons", followed by him carrying and dropping Reflector, was also cut. The sequence resumes right after Megatron sets Reflector down next to Soundwave.

Trivia
* Shockwave's appearance hints that Hasbro was already planning for expansion of the toyline. His toy was not among the initial 28 characters advertised by the 1984 Transformers catalog, yet there he is, making a short appearance that obviously sets up the possibility of future appearances. His toy would be one of the very first 1985 toys to see release, and his character would return in the very first post-pilot episode.

* The episode ends with a preview of "Part 2". While other multi-part Transformers episodes generally refer to the episode by its title ("Next time, on The Transformers: 'The Ultimate Doom'"), this preview uses the series title, The Transformers, as "More Than Meets the Eye" is a retroactive name for the three-part episode, which began as a mini-series before becoming a regular program.

* Many later episodes would mine this one for recycled footage, particularly the line up of transforming Autobots near the end. Transformation sequences (with and without new backgrounds) from this episode appear in "Heavy Metal War", "Blaster Blues", and others. Optimus Prime's transformation sequence from this episode is used in dozens of episodes.

* The mid-80s Family Home Entertainment VHS release of "More Than Meets the Eye" was granted the Film Advisory Board Award of Excellence, proudly displayed on the video box cover above. However, this particular "award" does not reflect the quality of any work submitted, but rather that the work is "family-friendly". Cheeky, that.
* The three parter was released on video in the United Kingdom in 1986 under the title "Arrival from Cybertron".
* Footage from the commercial featuring the Autobot Double Targetmaster trio was spliced into the Generation 2 version of this episode by way of the Cybernet Space Cube. Outside of this, they never actually appeared in the cartoon.
* Footage from this episode was used to represent a historical video in "Transform and Roll Out", the opening movie for Transformers Animated.
The Autobots investigate their first clue to the Omega Lock, and Landmine reveals there's more to him than meets the eye.

Synopsis
On Velocitron, native racers Crumplezone and Ransack are driving along, minding their own business, when they suddenly find Megatron standing in their paths. The Decepticon leader attacks the pair, and they opt for flight over fight, but Megatron has no intentions of letting them escape. The pair transform to robot mode to try and give a decent account of themselves, but Megatron slaps them around with ease and informs them they now work for him. The defeated duo can do little but obey.

Meanwhile, on Earth, Landmine is feeling useless due to the fact that he is still recovering from his injuries at the hands of Starscream. Optimus Prime reassures him he'll be back up to fighting strength again soon. Soon, Coby, Bud and Lori arrive to cheer Landmine up, and Optimus leaves them alone, departing for a meeting with the other Autobots to discuss a plan of action for finding the Cyber Planet Keys. They agree that more info on the Atlantis Pattern and the Omega Lock is needed, so Vector Prime begins analyzing the pattern while the others head out to gather intel. Lori and Bud go too, with Jetfire and Jolt, respectively. Optimus, meanwhile, goes looking for Hot Shot, and finds him goofing off at a local race track. Optimus reprimands him for being reckless when discretion is needed, and the apologetic Hot Shot swears it won't happen again.

Back at the base, Coby is giving Landmine a checkup. He tells him he's not completely healed yet, but Landmine is eager to help look for info, so Coby agrees to let him go out, so long as he picks an Earth vehicle mode, first. They head out to a construction site, where Landmine chooses a front loader as his alternate mode, then he and Coby start their search.

Elsewhere, Bud has been surfing the net from within Jolt, and has discovered a report of an archaeological artefact bearing the Atlantis Pattern at a museum in Mexico. Jolt passes the news to Optimus, who orders the whole team to the museum. Unfortunately, Starscream and Thundercracker spot them en route, and follow them to Mexico.

The Autobots arrive at the museum first, under cover of night, but it isn't long before the two Decepticons show up. Thundercracker shows off his new Cyber Key, blasting Jetfire, and the two airborne nemeses take off to duel in the skies. The Recon Mini-Con Team and the kids clear the battlefield, and Vector Prime heads inside to check out the pattern, covered by Hot Shot and Scattorshot while Optimus Prime faces down Starscream. The treacherous Decepticon unveils his own Cyber Key Power, but before a fight can begin between the two, Landmine comes charging in, determined to get a piece of the Decepticon. Prime orders him to stand back, as he's not ready for combat, but Landmine hesitates, and Starscream takes the opportunity to shoot at him. Optimus takes the shot for Landmine, and Landmine charges at Starscream with righteous fury, but the Decepticon knocks him down, and flies toward the museum to take out Vector Prime. Scattorshot and Hot Shot hold him off, but as they battle, Jetfire and Thundercracker appear overhead, still dogfighting. One of Thundercracker's shots goes wide, heading for the kids and Mini-Cons, and Landmine leaps to defend them. Summoning his Cyber Key for the first time, Landmine activates his "Cyber Tempest" attack to detonate the incoming fire, proving that he's ready for action again.

At this point, Vector Prime emerges and declares that the object inside is not the Omega Lock, but rather an imitation. With the object of their search proven a fake, and with Red Alert Overhaul arriving to reinforce the Autobots, Starscream calls for a retreat.

Back at base, Landmine and Coby share a moment, as Landmine tells him that their friendship has made saving Earth just as important to him as saving Cybertron. As the Autobots lament that they appear to be back to square one, Vector Prime reveals that while the object at the base was an imitation, it did contain a star map giving the location of Velocitron, where one of the Cyber Planet Keys is located. Optimus dispatches Hot Shot and Red Alert to Velocitron, with orders to be discreet and make no contact with the locals. Vector Prime combines the power of his sword with Optimus's Matrix of Leadership to open a dimension gate to Velocitron, and the pair waste no time in heading through. Hot Shot is agog at the endless speedways of the planet...and aghast when he is suddenly passed by the speeding form of a female Velocitronian, who seems to be even faster than him.
Differences with Galaxy Force
*Rather inexplicably, Cybertron cuts off the short sequence which precedes the title card of the Galaxy Force version of the episode, in which Crumplezone and Ransack are racing along, discussing the weather. They run a white car off the road, then drive into the mouth of a tunnel, which is where we rejoin them after the title card, and where the Cybertron episode begins.
*Crumplezone and Ransack's reaction to Megatron's proclamation that they work for him is reversed; in Galaxy Force, Crumplezone immediately agrees to work for him, prompting an irritated Ransack to ask why he's speaking for him, while in Cybertron, it is Crumplezone who turns Megatron down, with Ransack claiming it's an offer they can't refuse.
*During Landmine's talk with Coby at episode's end, Galaxy Force has Landmine refer to Cybertron being swallowed up by the black hole, a plot point consistently excised from the Cybertron dub. In its place, Landmine talks about how he was not initially interested in saving Earth, but that his new friendship with Coby has convinced him otherwise.

Pain count
*"Cyber Key Power!": 4
*"Super mode!": 1

Animation or technical errors
* When Starscream and Thundercracker arrive at the museum, they both announce their own names...but the cry of "Transform!" that should follow is absent.
* When Thundercracker says, "I just love parties, don't you, Starscream?" his mouth is not moving.

Transformers references
* Landmine is still recovering from injuries he took back in "Fallen".
* The generic sports car Autobots based on Blurr's bodyform appear again in this episode, having previously been seen in "Hidden". The white Velocitronian sports car cut from the Cybertron version of this episode is also a Blurr-type.

Trivia
*Landmine takes an Earth altmode in this episode. However, he pretty clearly had a lot of kibble from this altmode before he acquired it (as the animators didn't have the budget to design a pre-Earth body... but couldn't they at least have removed the shovels before then?).
*Thundercracker and Starscream can how summon Cyber Keys, despite the fact that back in "Haven", the Autobots could not do so before Vector Prime awoke the ability within them. It is never explained how these two Decepticons (as well as Megatron, who will soon get in on the act) obtained the ability. On the colony worlds the Transformers will go on to visit through the series, however, Cyber Key Powers are common knowledge, and all the Transformers there have always had them.
*Landmine's transformation to robot mode is awfully balletic for a rough, tough, front loader.
*Landmine can use his shovel halves as shields, capable of blocking Starscream's Null Cannons, hence his Galaxy Force name 'Guardshell'.
The Autobots learn that being robots in disguise is more complicated than they thought.

Synopsis
At sea, Bud is riding aboard one of two Autobots who have taken on colorful submarine alternate modes. He declares this to be totally awesome, until a ship from the real Navy shows up, and the crew demands that the two Autobots identify themselves. When they don't respond, the Navy prepares to fire on them, and the Autobots dive beneath the waves to escape the danger (much more energetically than a real sub could). The captain of the ship decides to pretend the whole thing never happened.

In a suburban parking lot, Coby is attempting to teach an assortment of sports car Autobots how to behave like real Earth cars, including parallel parking. Unfortunately, the hot-rodding Autobots' tendency to show off draws a crowd of spectators who begin admiring the cars, and Coby begins extemporizing about how he designed them. A police officer then points out that the cars aren't street legal, so Coby quickly declares that they're not real cars, but actually voice-activated remote-controlled cars. A quick demonstration of the cars' remarkable abilities (e.g., dancing) befuddles the officer, and Coby escapes in one of the cars.

Deep in the desert, an old man driving a truck stops at a red traffic light. He comments to himself that there's no conceivable need for a light here, and a disembodied voice tells him to not even think about running the light. It then turns green, and the same voice tells him he can go. Well and truly freaked, he speeds away. Lori comes out from behind a rock, and advises the traffic light—actually an Autobot in disguise—that traffic lights don't usually talk.

Later, back at the Autobots' base, Jetfire admonishes the kids that they need to pick the Autobots' altmodes a little more carefully, since they don't want to call attention to themselves. The kids begin to squabble among themselves over who screwed up worst, while the exasperated Jetfire leaves to join the other Autobots in the command centre, where they are teleconferencing with Red Alert. From his position on a remote station, Red Alert is about to initiate an attempt to collapse the universe-devouring black hole in on itself with a gravitron grid, thus ending the threat to Cybertron. Jetfire gripes about how unhelpful the kids have been, but Hot Shot tells him to give them a chance, and they all turn their attention to Red Alert's efforts. Alas, the power of the black hole is too much for the graviton grid, and Vector Prime again states that the only real solution is to find the Cyber Planet Keys. The Autobots are skeptical, but Red Alert speaks up on Vector Prime's behalf, and the team decides to make the search for the Keys their top priority.

Jetfire meets with the kids again, and discovers that they're now buckling down and discussing the practical aspects of hiding the Autobots on Earth. His new feeling of reassurance is quickly shunted aside by Scattorshot, who informs him that he has just piccked up some Air Force transmissions regarding an unidentified bogey. Scattorshot identifies it as Thundercracker, and Jetfire quickly speeds into action with Optimus Prime and Vector Prime to save the two military planes that have tried to engage the Decepticon. Jetfire swoops in to protect the planes, shielding them from 'Cracker's missiles with his body. For a moment, he appears to be destroyed, but then he emerges from the explosion, and instinctively summons his Cyber Key for the first time. His powered-up attack easily disposes of Thundercracker's next salvo, and Vector Prime opens a dimension gate to teleport the Air Force planes to the Bermuda Triangle, well beyond Thundercracker's reach. Thundercracker flees, and Jetfire pursues him, clashing in an aerial, vehicle-mode duel that Jetfire is winning, until Scattorshot shoots Thundercracker down.

Optimus Prime, meanwhile, is confronted by Megatron and Starscream, and laid out by a swipe of the Decepticon leader's arm. As Optimus and Vector Prime demand the return of the Planet Map, Megatron just stands there looking smug and refuses. Optimus hurls Starscream aside and switches to Super Mode, but as he charges towards Megatron, Starscream slashes him across the back. His heart burning, Optimus summons his own Cyber Key for the first time and knocks Starscream down with a double cannon blast. Megatron still refuses to surrender the map and trades a few punches with Optimus, but when Autobot reinforcements arrive, Megatron declares it's time to leave. He brags about having already located the first Cyber Planet Key, then warps away with Starscream.

One of the Air Force pilots reports in to his superior officer about their strange encounter with giant robots. The officer doesn't seem particularly surprised, and seems to know about Transformers. He tells the pilot that everything about his encounter is classified.

Back at the Autobot base, Coby is setting the refugees up with sensible, inconspicuous altmodes, Bud is providing them with templates for holographic drivers, and Lori is teaching them the traffic laws. Jetfire comments that this may work out after all.

And, deep in space, Megatron stares down at Velocitron, the Speed Planet, location of the first Cyber Planet Key...

Notes
Differences with Galaxy Force
*In Cybertron, the cop who inspects the Autobot cars tells Coby that the drafting fins on the cars makes them illegal to drive on the road. In Galaxy Force, on the other hand, he suspects them of being stolen. As Coby denies it, Galaxy Force also sees him backpedal on his previous claim of designing them, as he states they're new on the market.
*While the Autobots remain unsure of whether to follow Vector Prime's plan in both versions of the show, Galaxy Force puts a little more emphasis on the fact that the Autobots are not entirley convinced that the Cyber Planet Keys even exist. During Optimus and Megatron's battle towards the end of the episode, Megatron even questions why Prime wants the map back if he doesn't believe in the Keys.
*In a small change, Galaxy Force has the pilots that engage Thundercracker note that he has not responded to their hails. Cybertron makes it appear they're shooting at him without attempting contact!

Pain count
*"Cyber Key Power!": 2
*"Super mode!": 1

Animation and/or technical glitches
* At 7:14, Jetfire's yellow cheek-vent is visibly clipping into his dark green collar.
* At 17:11 and 17:18, Optimus's ear-fins clip into his backpack. Those dramatic poses are nothing but trouble.

Continuity errors
* One of the Air Force pilots asks how Thundercracker got behind them, when he's clearly still in front of them.
* Vector Prime says that Jetfire's Cyber Key came without him needing to call it forth, before the key actually arrives.

Transformers references
*The Autobot cars under Coby's watch all use the bodyform of Cybertron Blurr, and one of them has his color scheme. Whether or not this is Blurr is a loaded question; check out the character's article for an in-depth examination.

Miscellaneous trivia
* With the first two episodes of the series having been skipped over when Cybertron debuted on American television, this episode was the first aired, dropping viewers right into the middle of things with no explanation in what must surely be one of the most fumble-fingered launches of a television programme ever.
* Let's face it. The scene in the parking lot is terribly silly on many levels.
* While it's quixotic to expect the physics of the universe-devouring black hole to make much sense, it may be worth pointing out that making a black hole "collapse in on itself" is redundant.
* The two Air Force jets are very similar in model to Thundercracker himself, but in a basic gray color scheme. However, the model of fighter jet is of Russian make, while the pilots are American.
* When Optimus charges Megatron, then spins and falls down, it's really unclear why he fell.

* Did Megatron come to Earth just to brag about possessing the Map and finding the first Key? Why?
* A blocking issue: At 18:20, part of Optimus's face is hidden by the fire engine light bar on his shoulder. It looks very odd, and a slightly different angle would have solved the problem.
* When Signal Lancer (as he will later be named) switches his light colors, and when Lori teaches the Autobots the rules of the road, the green traffic light is blue. As you will be aware if you watch much anime, however, this is not actually a mistake. This color conundrum is an odd Japanese cultural tic based on the fact that for a large portion of the language's history, they used the same word, "ao" (青), for both blue and green. Although a separate word meaning green has since been established in the language (midori 緑), "ao" is still widely used to describe both shades of blue and green: the blue sky can be "ao", but so is a green traffic light. As a befuddling consequence of this quirk of language, illustrations of traffic lights, be they in driving manuals or animated cartoons about robots from space, are actually colored blue, despite the fact that the real, tangible physical traffic lights on streets in Japan are actually green. You get all that? Okay, now forget it and go play outside, or something. Life's too short, man.

With the power of Super Energon, Megatron becomes invincible, and takes control of Cybertron.

Synopsis
Megatron declares his ownership of the Super Energon, and commands its three guardians to serve him. Two agree readily, but Superion Maximus replies that the Super Energon belongs to no one, and is for the good of all Transformers. Unimpressed, Megatron dives into the pool, with Superion observing that he'll never survive. But Megatron absorbs the power, and emerges transformed into Galvatron. Bruticus Maximus and Constructicon Maximus swear their fealty. Superion Maximus's shots simply bounce off harmlessly. Unable to defeat him, Superion Maximus splits into five jets and escapes. Galvatron sends the other two guardians after him; they likewise split into five vehicles and pursue.

Mirage finds the other Decepticons, now liberated. Not finding any Autobots around, they set out on an orgy of Destruction, blowing up lots of generics. Galvatron summons Starscream to the Super Energon pool; as he does, Six Shot overhears it and proposes that the Decepticons construct their own energon grid. Six Shot and Demolishor head for the base control room.

The Miranda II arrives over Cybertron. The Autobots get no answer from the surface, and prepare to make a forced landing at the space port.

Six Shot and Demolishor arrive at the control room and find it empty. Rad and the Jones family are watching from concealment, however; after Demolishor nearly discovers them, they flee.

Starscream heads into the depths of Cybertron with a group of Terrorcons, following Galvatron's directions.

The Miranda II descends. Standing on its hull, Prime regrets not destroying Megatron, but vows to retake control of Cybertron.

Within Cybertron's urban canyons, Superion Maximus still hasn't eluded his brothers. All three re-combine and face off.

As Galvatron observes, the Terrorcons are disintegrating from the power of the Super Energon. To test Starscream's loyalty, he has him enter the pool; he succeeds, surviving and taking on new colors. Six Shot reports in that the Autobot ship has arrived.

Omega, Prime and Ironhide land and start blasting Terrorcons left and right. The Maximus brothers arrive and confront the Autobots. As they face off, Superion Maximus speculates that he'll have a better chance with the Autobots as his allies; meanwhile, Six Shot observes that the objects of his vengeance have arrived.

The super-charged Megatron bursts from the ground, along with Starscream. Prime's shots just bounce off; Megatron and Starscream make short work of the Autobots and begin destroying energon towers. Six Shot lines up Prime in his sights, but a collapsing tower knocks him away from the controls.

Energon gas begins leaking from the towers. Realizing it will damage the Autobots, Kicker heads off on his own to find his family. Prime orders a retreat. Kicker runs into Starscream; Prime arrives to back him up, even as the gas overpowers him. Superion Maximus swoops in to save Kicker, while Prime collapses. Jetfire arrives to save Prime.

Alpha Q observes the energon gas being released all over Cybertron, and frets that Galvatron will wreak havoc again.

Rodimus asks Omega Supreme what the Super Energon was to be used for; Omega explains that it was to be used to forge a new era for all Transformers. Superion Maximus repairs Optimus, and asks to join the team.

Kicker berates himself for not making it into the building to find his family, and continues to worry over them. Ironhide says he's there to help, and they prepare to move out.

"Hint, well, hrm. Let's just say that it's something that will make us invincible. Energon can give us strength, but thanks to Unicron I've found a pool of Super Energon, and with it we'll be absolutely unbeatable!"
"Galvatron, how could he have survived? I destroyed him!"
:—Ironhide and Kicker: not on the list.

Notes
Lost in translation
Very little, and nothing major:

* The dub plays down some brief hesitation by Bruticus and Construction Maximus, such as when he orders them to pursue Superion Maximus, and omits some slightly archaic phrasings from Galvatron, such as "remember, ancient warriors, how to fight" as he sees them off. Also missing is Constructicon Maximus's statement that Galvatron's words and actions are "those of a true Decepticon".
* A little gag is omitted from the dub, wherein Mirage ("Shockfleet" in Japan) emits his characteristic "shock" battle cry upon being told that Megatron lives. Snowcat asks what that means, and Mirage replies "Happy shock!", with a corresponding pose of joy and a little horn fanfare (which remain in the dub, seeming very odd.) Since Energon doesn't have Mirage using his battle cry, the gag wouldn't have worked for the dub.
* The gag continues, with the Decepticons exclaiming how happy they are as they transform for battle ("one hundred times happiness transform!"), explaining why Snowcat does a pirouette while standing on Mirage's deck.
* Six Shot doesn't originally propose creating their own grid as in the dub, but rather reactivating the one the Autobots have already built.
* The dub has Dr. Jones wondering why the Decepticons want the plans for the energon grid. Super Link has the humans immediately figuring out that they're planning to capture the planet's core.
* Galvatron's observation that the Terrorcons can't absorb the Super Energon doesn't quite jibe with the animation, which shows that while some are indeed overloading and blowing up, others are forming energon stars. Sure enough, the line is a dub addition.
* A second later, the dub has Galvatron saying "Shall we use this energon to put up our own energon grid, gentlemen?" even though Starscream's the only one there. Originally, he simply asks Starscream to affirm that they can put up the grid.
* Superion Maximus's concern that he'll have to prove his trustworthiness: dub addition.
* Kicker originally vows to become his family's hope, a minor point lost in the dub and replaced with typical Energon "let's do it!" wiffle.

Continuity errors
* Shouldn't the Energon Saber also be affected by the gas? It's made of three Transformers (not that you'd know from watching Energon, but still...)

Transformers references
*Starscream asks Galvatron for a hint as to what he's found. A newly-minted Galvatron has given a Starscream a hint before, though it was a little different from the situation here.

Miscellaneous notes
* So Superion Maximus basically just stands there and lets Megatron dive into the Super Energon. Some guardian!
* Megatron's face gets the cel animation upgrade as he screams within the Super Energon pool.
* More paper generics in this episode - once again, they explode and die after a single shot.
* The animation goes to great lengths to hide the fact that the combiners can actually transform. When they split, they're enveloped in a blinding glowing light, which splits into five glowing spheres which then fade away to reveal the vehicle modes. The same shtick repeats in reverse when they re-combine. Eventually, a proper combination sequence would be shown for them in "Distribution", so presumably the animation just wasn't ready at this point.
Shockblast tries to seize control of Unicron, but can any mere mortal control the Chaos Bringer?

Synopsis
Misha and Kicker watch and crack nervous jokes as Unicron self-heals. Jokes aside, Kicker and Arcee exit the Miranda II, with Ironhide backing them up, and make for Unicron's head. The rest of the Autobots head for Unicron's surface, searching for Megatron.

Within, Rodimus and Optimus Supreme are closing in on Megatron's position. Prime notes that he can sense the life force of those around him. Rodimus suspects it's Omega's influence, as powerlinked Autobots increase their strength tenfold.

Megatron can't get Unicron to stop his foes. He reasons that Unicron needs more energon, but all his troops are pinned down by the Autobots—all except Shockblast, who is nowhere close to a combat zone but lies that he is. Scorponok sends the Terrorcons for more energon and heads off in pursuit of Kicker, Arcee and Ironhide.

Shockblast bursts into Megatron's chamber, claiming the Autobots are right behind him, prompting Megatron to burst free from his control throne. Shockblast immediately claims the throne for his own, patching into Unicron and taking control. He sends Unicron toward Blizzard Planet.

Unicron's life force, however, proves too much for Shockblast to absorb on his own; it mutates him and sends him rampaging madly through Unicron. He attacks both Autobot and Decepticon, blasting Optimus and Omega straight out into space. They crash-land on Blizzard Planet, and Shockblast follows.

Omega Supreme tells Optimus that Shockblast is now part of Unicron, driven solely by evil instincts.

The Autobots regroup, getting updates on Prime and Kicker. The Autobots relay to Kicker that they won't be able to escape if Unicron repairs himself, but Kicker is undaunted. Rodimus is almost to Megatron's chamber, where Megatron is having some troubles with his control systems.

Even the powerlinked Optimus and Omega are having trouble handling Shockblast, but Omega says they do have the power to win.

Rodimus gets ejected from Unicron and hooks up with the other Autobots. Informed that Kicker is still inside, he heads back in to retrieve the boy.

Optimus tries to talk Shockblast to his senses, reminding him that he is a proud warrior. Shockblast resurfaces, and fires on Unicron—only to have Unicron's hand come smashing down to the surface, pulverizing him before Optimus's eyes.

Megatron feels Shockblast's life force flowing through him and laughs in triumph.

Kicker has arrived at wherever he's going. Blasting through, Kicker and the two Autobots enter a dark room and find the gray, lifeless husk of Alpha Q. Kicker is furious at his own failure to protect Alpha Q.

Scorponok finds the trio and calls in to Megatron, requesting orders. Megatron, struggling with Unicron, can barely blurt out "Destroy!!" Ironhide points out Alpha Q's remains to Scorponok, triggering a war within him over whom he truly serves. As Unicron's defenses suddenly activate, Rodimus arrives and leads Kicker's group to the outside. The Autobots return to the Miranda II and beat a hasty retreat.

Scorponok is ejected from Unicron, crying out Megatron's name. Within, Megatron says that Megatron doesn't exist anymore—there's only Unicron now, and all will bow before him!

Notes
Lost in translation
* The early scenes in particular are freighted with dub padding, extra dialog thrown in to make sure that every single second of the episode has someone jabbering over it. Basically, if you don't actually see someone's lips flapping on the screen, then the dialog is a dub addition.
* Several subtleties of Kicker's initial plan to search for Alpha Q are lost in the dub, most notably the basic fact that he's going to search for Alpha Q. The dub inserts some nonsense from Kicker about "that's where the action is" and "I hope we can get there before it's too late!"
* The dub also omits Ironhide repeatedly implying that Alpha Q's already dead (and by extension, the search is pointless). In Super Link, Hot Shot points out that he is still Kicker's partner, and Ironhide agrees to go along until Kicker is satisfied. The dub also has Kicker spouting more random lines that make it seem like he's on some kind of mission to destroy Unicron.
* The dub omits Omega Supreme's explanation that Unicron awakens the most base instincts of those whose minds he controls.
* There are some minor editing differences between the two versions as Shockblast wails on Optimus Supreme, seemingly to give Omega Supreme more time in Super Link to yammer about the strength of a strong heart that is strong and has strength.
* In Super Link, Shockblast has no dialog when he's possessed by Unicron, only screaming and growling.
* The dub downplays Megatron's delighted sensation of having crushed Shockblast with his own arm.
* Super Link features a much longer rant from Kicker over Alpha Q's corpse, complete with longer scene editing. The gist of it is the ol' "he's not really dead as long as we honor his dream" shtick. The dub replaces this with a shorter rant about the team's failure to protect him.
* Megatron's last line ("especially you, Prime"), and Prime's entire mini-monologue, are both dub additions.

Pain Count
Perhaps related to the fact that things actually happen, it's surprisingly low:

* "Uh?": 3
* "We're a team": 1
* Stock footage: 1
* "We've got a mission": 1

Miscellaneous notes
*Paramount's home video releases list the name of this episode as "The Power of Unicron". While this isn't the first episode title to be changed, it is the biggest of those changes in that it materially alters the title (the other changes were alterations to grammar, spelling, or word parsing).
*This episode has a whole lot of hand-drawn moments:
**Shockblast being warped by Unicron.
**Shockblast's death scene.
**The scene immediately following, with Megatron ranting about power.
**Arcee, as usual, when serving as Kicker's transportation.
Megatron activates Unicron's body, which moves to reclaim its head.

Summary
From his control throne deep within Unicron, Megatron declares: "Next stop: Unicron."

Unicron is heading toward Alpha Q; Prime orders the energon grid activated. As the towers on the various planets activate, Megatron simply laughs. Kicker questions Omega Supreme about how he defeated Unicron before, but Omega says he's simply a soldier, here to follow Prime's orders. Kicker finds this less than satisfactory.

The Autobots attack the surface of Unicron. Megatron intends to crash Unicron's body into the energon grid. The 'bots and 'cons fight on his surface.

The humans note that Unicron is trapped inside the energon grid, which could cause the whole planet to explode. The Autobots attempt to retreat; Ironhide finds a way in, but Omega Supreme forces him to retreat.

Megatron commands Unicron to power through the grid. The other Decepticons have their doubts, but in the end, Unicron breaks through and heads toward Alpha Q's energon orb.

Kicker tries to warn Alpha Q, who refuses to run—he's "come to terms with our fate". Alpha Q does lament failing to help all his planets. Prime intends to enter Unicron to go after Megatron, but the heat repels Rodimus and Wing Saber, leaving him on his own. They send Omega in after Prime, who's been brought to a standstill by the sheer heat.

Kicker refuses to give up on Alpha Q, who finally relents and tells him to head toward a newly formed planet near Ocean Planet. Misha sends the Miranda II on its way.

Unicron grasps the Energon Orb, but Alpha Q resists. As Unicron is peppered with hellfire and brimstone, Omega locates the damaged Optimus. With Unicron on the verge of exploding, the other Autobots retreat.

Kicker and Misha arrive on the planet and land. Kicker contacts Alpha Q for the next step, only to receive a romantic reminiscence about the past, as Alpha Q quietly accepts his fate. The Energon Orb dies out, restored to Unicron's head, which the titan soon restores atop his shoulders. Unicron is whole again!

As the Autobots work to restore Prime, Megatron orders Unicron to go forth and feed. But Unicron simply remains stationary, to Megatron's frustration. Rodimus suspects he's repairing damage, providing them with another chance. Omega reveals that he can link up with Optimus, and so the Autobots prepare to attack.

Aboard the Miranda II, Kicker refuses to accept that Alpha Q is dead, and vows to find him.

"You've gotta make a run for it! Unicron made it through the energon grid and is heading your way."<br>
"We know... but we will not run."<br>
"Attempting to escape would be futile. We don't stand a chance against Unicron."<br>
Notes
Lost in translation
* Megatron's first line is supposed to be an order to Unicron to start moving. The dub warptifies this into "Next stop Unicron", which makes no sense as Megatron is already aboard Unicron's body. Unicron's head is currently morphed into the Energon Orb, so this makes even less sense if you've missed an episode or three.
* For once, Unicron's growls aren't a dub addition. However, Super Link makes him more like one of the deep-throated, honest-to-god-scary Terror Dogs from Ghostbusters. The dub makes him sound like that cornily-growling gray-painted Scorponok toy from the Micromaster commercials. Rawrrrrrr!
* A background of buildings and spires is missing from the dub animation as Snowcat comes skiing in along Unicron's surface.
* A minor animation change: after Prowl and Hot Shot powerlink, Ironhide is shown getting out of the Terrorcons' way. The dub uses a still frame shot of Hot Shot and some others in the same place.
* Unicron isn't "trapped in the grid", as the dialog indicates; he's about to ram into it. The mistake is a dub artifact.
* The dub has Misha then saying "Look, Kicker! Unicron's passing right through the energon grid!" when he hasn't even reached it yet.
* Kicker's first conversation with Alpha Q (quoted above) makes a bit more sense in the original version. Alpha Q hasn't "accepted his fate"; he's "merely preparing himself". He also doesn't say that "we don't stand a chance against Unicron"; this dub-addition line obscures the fact that he's preparing to make a stand, rather than simultaneously making a stand/preparing to die passively/just giving up.
* The dub is missing a heat-shimmer effect that plays over all the scenes that are set on Unicron's super-heated surface, as Optimus attempts to enter Unicron.
* The dub omits Alpha Q's line explaining that he's releasing all his energon as Unicron grabs the Orb, thus obscuring the entire point of the climactic act of the whole episode.
* The dub omits a line from Omega Supreme explaining that if Prime combines with him, it will "reduce his life". While the exact meaning of this is unclear, it does lend some weight to the proceedings. Without it, the scene just becomes a lot of strange Autobot waffling about "I am prepared to do this!" and "WE MUST SUCCEED!"

Pain count
* "Uh?": 0, amazingly
* "It's time to": 3
* "We've got a mission": 3
* "Let's do it!": 3
* Stock footage: 4

Animation and technical errors
* With no introductory scenes, it's really not clear at all where the various energon towers are.
* During Scorponok's short battle with Omega Supreme, he's given Megatron's voice.

Continuity errors
* "The third planet to the north of Ocean Planet"? Wha?? (note: not a dub error.)

Trivia
*Unicron's growls and grunts are hilariously pathetic, sounding a bit like he's having a difficult bowel movement.
*Paramount's home video releases list the title as "Heroic Battle," dropping the "A" from the name.

Megatron begins to activate Unicron, and Omega Supreme joins the Autobots to try and stop him.

Summary
Deep within Cybertron, Dr. Jones is shocked to find himself in the chamber of Omega Supreme, the legendary guardian of energon. Omega activates.

A second later, on Planet Cybertron, Rad and Dr. Jones contact Optimus Prime about Omega.

Wing Saber flies through the void in space and the asteroid storm within, to find the hulking remains of Unicron, regenerating by absorbing energy from the void. He reports this to the Autobots. Prime responds by requesting more energon towers from Dr. Jones.

Megatron demands that his troops bring more energon to continue refueling Unicron. The Autobots prepare to move out to stop the revival.

Alpha Q prepares to protect his planets by re-energizing them with energon.

As the Miranda II lifts off, Optimus fills the others in on Omega Supreme's history: eons ago, he fought Unicron. Kicker hopes that he might know how to beat him now, but Rodimus is pessimistic: waiting for Omega might give Megatron the extra time he needs.

One of Alpha Q's planets suddenly explodes, and Scorponok leads a horde of Terrorcons in to gather energon from the fragments. The other Decepticons note that Shockblast isn't with them—turns out he's still lurking within Unicron. The Miranda II arrives and attacks. Lots of lasers fly around without hitting anyone. Scorponok takes the Terrorcons into retreat; many escape despite the Autobots' efforts. The Autobots pursue, all the way back to Unicron's body, as the Terrorcons unload the energon.

Within, Shockblast's lurking is discovered by Megatron, but he bluffs through it. Megatron needs only a few more moments to revive Unicron. Optimus goes hunting for him.

Megatron starts moving Unicron's hand to crush the Autobots, and they retreat. Under heavy fire, the Autobots suddenly observe a glowing light which defeats the Terrorcons. It's Omega Supreme! Starscream and Scorponok try their hand, but are defeated. Omega and Optimus go to back up the other Autobots.

On the Miranda II, the humans detect the incoming energon towers, being guided in by the reformatted Inferno, now calling himself Roadblock. The (7 or so) Autobots are trapped by the (3??) Decepticons, but retreat with the arrival of the energon towers. The hundreds of towers are sent hurtling at Unicron by Omega Supreme, attaching themselves to his abdomen and causing explosions.

The entire monster growls, glows, and moves, and Megatron gloats that Unicron can't be defeated that easily. He wants Unicron's head back, and so the energon orb will be his. The Autobots must stop him.

Other Notes
Lost in translation
Most of the problems with this episode are native to the original production; not all that much is lost in the dub:
* The opening conversation with Rad and Dr. Jones, quoted above, is yet another example of Energons incoherent dub scripting. The Super Link version is the same in content but written so it makes sense.
* Wing Saber and the others are concerned about Unicron absorbing "the dark matter", rather than energon.
* The dub omits that Alpha Q is sending energon to some of the planets that are not yet matured.
* A plot point from Super Link is that the exploded planet likely contains the last of the energon. The dub omits this.
* Unicron's corny growls are a dub addition; in Super Link, he's silent.

Pain Count
* "Uh?": 10
* Stock footage: 3
* "Let's do it!": 2
Super Link:
* I'm your opponent: 2

Animation and/or technical glitches
* Scenes within Unicron are yet again lit to the point of being almost totally black.
* This is yet another episode whose clarity suffers from a lack of introductory shots, to explain what the void and the energon orb are.
* After trying to blow a hole in Unicron, Powerlinx Ironhide speaks in Cliffjumper's voice.

Continuity errors
* The last episode ended with Dr. Jones ecstatically babbling out loud about the Omega Supreme chamber. This episode starts with him walking into the chamber and abruptly going "Where am I?"
* As with the earlier episode "Protection", we never do find out just how the Decepticons made a whole planet explode.

Miscellaneous notes
*For all the enormous fuss over Omega Supreme's arrival and significance, including Omega himself solemnly declaring "IT IS TIME", he really doesn't do much in this episode.
*Given the pronunciation of his name in the Japanese version, it's not hard to guess where the name "Omega Spreem" came from.
