'''Signal Flare''' has taken a different tactic to protecting [[Earth]] from the [[Decepticon|Decepticons]]. Eschewing combat, he prefers to hide among the [[Human|humans]] and secretly help build their structures to withstand damage from Decepticon weaponry, rather than the mission of fighting [[that big green, fire-snortin' lizard]] which might be implied by his alt mode. He also remains vigilant in watching out for any Decepticon activity on Earth, quickly transmitting details to the Autobot high command.

He's found a prime staging ground at the [[Wash & Roll]], an automobile service station and car wash near the [[Ron Witwicky|Witwickys]]' home. It's from here that he keeps his fellow Autobots clean and properly maintained.

As a recruit, Signal Flare underwent training missions with [[Ironhide (Movie)|Ironhide]]—said training being "attack that heavily armed Decepticon base!". Many years ago, Signal Flare was a member of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]'s science division under the command of Optimus and Protector [[Megatron (Movie)|Megatron]]. He was part of the dig team excavating the ruins outside the temple of [[Simfur]] when a [[The Fallen|mysterious relic]] was unearthed. Soon after, strange aliens from the [[Eshems Nebula]] attacked, reducing much of [[Metrotitan (ROTF)|Metrotitan]] to rubble. {{storylink|Defiance issue 1}} In the aftermath, he helped [[Clocker (Movie)|Clocker]] and [[Warpath (Movie)|Warpath]] search for survivors in the ruins. Later, he was present at a meeting called by Optimus, who explained Megatron's demand for compulsory military service and a new mission of war against all of Cybertron's enemies. Many years ago, Stockade was a member of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]'s armed forces, and witnessed [[Megatron (Movie)|Megatron]]'s declaration of (essentially) a military dictatorship to deal with the crisis created by an alien attack. {{storylink|Defiance issue 2}} Stockade joined Megatron's new "Decepticon" faction when the planet collapsed into a civil war. {{storylink|Defiance issue 4}}

Thousands of years later, after the death of Megatron and the destruction of the [[AllSpark (Movie)|All Spark]] on [[Earth]], Stockade was assigned by [[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream]] to oversee the construction of the [[replica Allspark|new All Spark]]. Stockade believed Cybertron was the greatest world in existence, and he and a handful of other Decepticons refused to abandon their homeworld. He loathed [[Megatron (Movie)|Megatron]] for his mad scheme to capture the [[AllSpark (Movie)|All Spark]], which had left Cybertron dead.

To remain online despite the lack of an All Spark or any other energy source, they drank [[Nucleon]]. Stockade became not only immensely strong (and addicted), he went all messiah, deciding to rebirth Cybertron. He and his "new Decepticons" pooled together the energy of their sparks and sent it into space as a sub-space carrier wave message, believing that any intelligence that detected it would be a relation of the All Spark and would arrive to re-energise Cybertron. {{storylink|Transformers Comic issue 17|Return to Cybertron: Part 1}} {{storylink|Transformers Comic issue 18|Return to Cybertron: Part 2}} He also explored the planet a great deal while preparing for this, discovering that its insides were a lot like those of a Transformer's—even including components that resembled gyro-joints. {{storylink|Transformers Comic issue 20|Return to Cybertron: Part 4}}

When a team of Autobots arrived, he calmly stated he wished to keep them functional and so challenged [[Ironhide (Movie)|Ironhide]] (their leader) to hand-to-hand combat, deciding which team had won via leadership conflict rather than start a shooting match. He shrugged off Ironhide's hit and punched him out, and then started screaming in rapture at the sight of an energy-based spatial anomaly {{storylink|Transformers Comic issue 17|Return to Cybertron: Part 1}} This, he informed [[Bumblebee (Movie)|Bumblebee]], was the entity they'd invited to Cybertron—and now that the Autobots had seen it, they could not be allowed to leave.

The Autobots weren't quite sold on the idea of letting an unknown alien force invade their homeworld's core, so the team caused a distraction while Bumblebee turned off the Nucleon surge that was a key part of Stockade's plan. Stockade ended the distraction by bashing Ironhide into the ground (it ''never'' gets old) and was pleased to find the entity was still entering Cybertron without the Nucleon. He was visibly less pleased when the entity announced itself as [[Unicron|Unicron, the Anti-Life]] {{storylink|Transformers Comic issue 18|Return to Cybertron: Part 2}}, and utterly freaked when the planet itelf began attacking them as it was reshaped, with him having to save [[Overcast (Movie)|Overcast]] at one point. He was left distraught at the idea he'd made the situation worse, and immediately ended all hostilities with the Autobots as he decided they needed to communicate with Unicron and convince the hostile scary Anti-Life creature to work with them for the betterment of Cybertron.

Shockingly, Unicron wasn't interested and Stockade got zapped. {{storylink|Transformers Comic issue 19|Return to Cybertron: Part 3}} Stockade futilely sent his troops in to shoot at Unicron instead and was upset to see [[Divebomb (Movie)|Divebomb]] buy it. However, at that point [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|Optimus Prime]] turned up and convinced Stockade to help him stop the monster. Contributing the Decepticons to this effort, Stockade led the Autobots into the planet's depths and kicked off shooting around the innards to distract Unicron.

After the battle, he gave over the Nucleon to save [[Earth]], not wanting two worlds to die because of him. Optimus offered him a place on Earth, but he said he was not yet ready to leave Cybertron; the offer remained open-ended. {{storylink|Transformers Comic issue 20|Return to Cybertron: Part 4}}

When the Autobots were facing being evicted from [[Earth]] by a Decepticon-controlled [[Theodore Allen|US President]], Optimus entered into a deal with Stockade—a deal Optimus fully expected him to renege on. While the Autobots faked their deaths, Stockade and his Decepticons went to Earth to stand against Starscream's conquest of the United States. Determined to prevent the Transformers' war from destroying this world like it had Cybertron, Stockade gave [[Hardtop (Movie)|Hardtop]] a chance to stand down... and, when it wasn't taken, ''shrugged off'' pointblank shots and led his troops in taking control of Hardtop's drones. Once that was done, he threatened to crush the guy's head with his bare hands, and so Hardtop ''very quickly'' defected.

Stockade took control of a third of Earth's drones, causing a [[Decepticon Civil War]] that undid Starscream's advance. {{storylink|Transformers Comic issue 24|Revolution Part 2}} It wasn't long before the New Decepticons were marching into the [[Decepticon Heartland]] itself, with Stockade openly tempted to hold onto Earth after it was liberated. However, he'd done a little ''too'' well as Megatron had been ''raised from the dead'' to oppose him!

While the very sight of Megatron might have made him surrender before, the Nucleon-powered Stockade took the tyrant on one-on-one, raining down punch after punch while screaming defiance and sermons... only for Megatron to grab his punch and use the momentum to flip him, berating him for a lack of clear ambition. How the fight would've gone after is unknown, because the Autobots stepped in with their part of the plan—'tags' that would teleport Decepticons to Cybertron. To Stockade's horror, [[Strongarm (Movie)|Strongarm]] tagged ''him'', the Autobots having decided to get rid of him before he could break the deal himself.

: As part of the "[[AllSpark Power]]" portion of the movie line, Stockade transforms into a [[Sector Seven]]-outfitted Cadillac Escalade SUV. His main gimmick is not [[Automorph|automorphing]], but a gear-driven punch activated by pulling back on the luggage bar on either forearm.

: On some early samples, the windshield halves in front of both hands pop off easily. This is due partly to the unusually soft plastic, which does not grip at the joints very well. Another issue is the pin-hinged ankles, which only barely support the toy's weight. However, later versions don't display either of these problems.

:Like all Japanese "Allspark Power" toys, the [[TakaraTomy|Takara]] version of Stockade comes with a small AllSpark cube accessory that's not included with the [[Hasbro]] version. Stockade himself appears to be no different.
