:Blackout is a Decepticon from the Movie continuity family. He is also known as N.B.E. 23

The massive Blackout has been described as the "hound" of Megatron. In better days he was always to be found looming powerful and silent behind his leader's right shoulder. When given a target he hunts it down with fierce determination. Blackout is not happy with the progress Starscream is making towards finding the missing Decepticon leader. He suspects (quite rightly) that Starscream would prefer Megatron to stay lost. Blackout is openly mutinous and will challenge Starscream's leadership at any opportunity, not for his own sake, but to better serve his ultimate goal of finding his lost master. Blackout has a sneaky side and uses his symbiotic companion Scorponok's small size to great advantage.
The Blackout Character Profile in Transformers Comic issue 4 (taken from the Movie Guide) mentions that Blackout prefers to sow confusion and disarray before he attacks rather than engage in direct confrontation & risk being killed. He'll only go into ground battles under cover of loud noise and pyrotechnics (which he himself causes with his devastating sonic shriek emitters).

Unfortunately for him, he keeps getting stuck leading the first wave of attacks. To protect himself, he uses an army of drone troopers (presumably Scorponoks to draw enemy fire. On Cybertron, these drones were called "the swarm" and Blackout deliberately encouraged rumours about them so their arrival would strike fear into the hearts of enemies.

In issue 7, following his death in the film, Starscream will make "decidedly unconventional use" of his remains to create a militia.

The Decepticon infiltration unit under the command of Starscream, including Blackout and Barricade, landed on Mars, hot on the trail of the Autobot Bumblebee. There, they destroyed a primative human rover scout. Prime Directives, Part 3

The unit arrived on Earth in the year 2003. Blackout scanned a USAF MH-53 Pave Low helicopter, but apparently was not detected by the humans, nor caused any casualties, in contrast to his two comrades. When Starscream tells the Decepticons that their mission is to find the All Spark, Blackout reminds Starscream that they must also find Megatron.

Later, after being lured into a trap intended for Bumblebee set by a group of impressively equipped humans, Blackout attacked the organisation's bunker and attempted to hack into their main server, but failed after they disconnected their local systems. The only lead he got was a name...Sector Seven. Prime Directives, Part 4

On Cybertron, Blackout fought alongside Megatron, until his master ordered 'this loyal hound' to assist Starscream's unit in keeping Optimus Prime's forces busy, while Megatron pursued his destiny. Arriving soon after Brawl delivered news of Megatron's location, Blackout and Starscream witnessed the sucessful Autobot launch of the Allspark. Blackout restrained Starscream from going after it, the pair nearly coming to blows when Blackout launched Scorponok from his chest. Fortunately, Starscream calmed down, and after witnessing Megatron leave the planet himself, the group took on protoform transition forms and followed.

Making planetfall on Earth in Afghanistan many years later, attracting the attention of an military vehicle of the local creatures. Witnessing the ease in which Wreckage destroys the carrier, Starscream was pondered that Megatron would have been able to subjugate these beings if he was able to, prompting Blackout to reply that they needed to find out why he hasn't. Starscream's unit then attacked the nearby air base where Blackout scanned and adopted the form of an MH-53J 'Pave Low' helicopter, then easily hacked into the files of the human computers. Inside, he found files on something called 'Project: Iceman', which he suspected was related to Megatron. After the base's destruction, Blackout headed towards Qatar, intent on attacking a similar military base there to access the information they needed. Transformers Movie Prequel (Target) Volume 2

Note: This story contradicts both issue 4 of IDW's own Prime Directives movie prequel as well as the movie with regards to where the Decepticons arrived on Earth (they landed in the United States in the other comic) and when did they arrive. In this story, Blackout immediately leaves for Qatar after the attack, whereas in the Movie itself, he assumed the form three months before attacking SOCCENT Qatar.

Blackout flew into the airspace of US SOCCENT Forward Operations Base in Qatar and refused to identify himself, prompting base commander Colonel Sharp to dispatch two F-22 Raptors to escort the Decepticon into their base. One of the Raptors reported that Blackout had the registry number of 4500X on his vertical stabilizer, the number of the helicopter Blackout had scanned and destroyed three months earlier in Afghanistan.

Once landed, Blackout was surrounded by the soldiers stationed at the base and ordered to power down and disembark his crew, or deadly force would be used. Seeing no reason to hide himself any further, Blackout transformed under a hail of automatic weapons fire from the shocked humans. Activating his heavy machine guns and rocket launchers, Blackout made quick work of the soldiers in closest to him, then unleashed a massive EMP wave that killed the rest of the troops and shattered their vehicles and the windows of the operations control tower. Blackout made his way around the base, tossing tanks aside, crushing soldiers underfoot and blowing up aircraft. Eventually, he reached the operations bunker and tore off the roof to link up with their server and download its files in an attempt to find information on Project: Ice Man. Unfortunately, the base commander intervened, cutting the physical hard line of the server, severing Blackout's connection and thwarting the primary objective of his mission.

Still, Blackout carried out his second objective - the destruction of the human base. As he proceeded, a human soldier was nearly crushed. Instinctively, the soldier recorded images of Blackout, the Decepticon indulging this brief moment of curiosity by looking straight back at the human. Blackout then activated a chest-mounted laser cannon to put the fleshling out of its misery, but before he could do so, he was struck by a sabot round fired by another soldier, and the human made his escape. Enraged, Blackout fired flare countermeasures into the sky to confuse any other attempts to attack him, then ejected Scorponok from his back and sent his minion to track the fleeing soldiers. Blackout then turned his attention and his weapons back to the rest of the base, eventually destroying it, leaving no survivors.

Evidently, after the attack, Blackout flew back to the United States, as he was in the vicinity when Frenzy reported the discovery of All Spark's location and Starscream ordered their forces to mobilizet. Blackout was the last to acknowledge the order, then rallied in Megatron's name, perhaps to remind Starscream who his master was.

Blackout arrived at Mission City just as the final battle was getting underway. Megatron's order of "Decepticons attack" must have been music to his ears, and he followed his master's commands whole heartedly. He attempted to block ladiesman217's path as the boy was trying to get away with the All Spark, before he was attacked by Ironhide. The Autobot threw a car at Blackout, who fired his laser cannon to destroy the vehicle and knocking Ironhide over. He flew ahead of ladiesman217, attempting to use his rotor weapon to kill him, but the human moved to quickly. Blackout withdrew from the battle for a few moments, but returned as Optimus Prime and Megatron fought. Seeing his master under attack, Blackout rallied to the defense of his lord by activating his hand-held rotor weapon, but soldiers&mdash;including survivors of the SOCCENT base attack&mdash;attempted to stop him by painting him with targeting lasers for friendly F-22 Raptors to fire upon. As Blackout activated his cannon, he noticed the lasers targeted on him. Underestimating the fighting spirit and desire for vengeance of the humans, Blackout tried to finish them off until Captain Lennox, using an abandoned motorcycle, charged at him and fired a sabot under his chest armour as F-22s pounded him with missiles, extinguishing his spark.

His remains were dumped in the (second) deepest part of the ocean along with his fellow dead Decepticons. Transformers (2007)
:(Note: The possible period of time that Blackout acquired his vehicle mode in the movie appears to contradict the origin of his vehicle mode in both IDW's Prime Directives prequel and the Target exclusive prequel comic. ====Autobot campaign====
In the Autobot campaign he suffers a humiliating defeat from Jazz, even though Blackout had Starscream's help. That's got be the most humiliating thing for any of the characters in the videogame, losing to somebody a third of his size.

Decepticon campaign
Blackout and Scorponok were sent to the SOCCENT Base to destroy the human military installation there and download information from the military servers on the location of the AllSpark. The pair were successful, though Blackout's escape was briefly interrupted by the arrival of a squad of human jet fighters. After blasting them to tiny bits, he made good his escape.

Blackout arrived at Hoover Dam, where his scans failed to detect the energy signatures of Megatron or the AllSpark. Starscream ordered him to break the dam piece by piece. Blackout fired a pair of missles and fought off a squad of Autobot sports car drones that were defending the installation. As Megatron emerged, he bowed before his lord. He then followed the newly-revived Megatron to Mission City, where he got engaged in a final showdown with Ironhide, who had just punted Scorponok. The Autobot warhorse certainly gave the massive Decepticon a run for his money. The huge number of Autobot drones backing Ironhide up didn't make things any easier.

During Megatron's battle with Optimus Prime, Blackout attempted to assist his master by charging Prime. Prime punched the massive Decepticon, sending him flying. How embarrassing.
*Blackout (Voyager Class, 2007)
:Japanese ID Number: MD-01

: Blackout transforms into a reasonably accurate Sikorsky MH-53 Pave Low heavy-lift helicopter, though his blue color scheme is quite inaccurate compared to the actual helicopter used in the movie and similar ones in USAF service. An aft "cage" compartment can be opened to release a small PVC figurine of his partner, Scorponok. A button on the very end of his tail can be pressed in a geared action to rotate his rotor blades, but this feature really comes into play when the user attaches the Deluxe-class Scorponok figure to the bottom of Blackout's helicopter mode via two pegs. A geared shaft linked to the rotor mechanism connects to a geared peg on Scorponok's back. Thus, pressing the button on Blackout's tail not only rotates his blades, but also rotates Scorponok's pincers, though this gimmick is actually easier to activate by rotating the geared wheel on Scorponok's undercarriage.

: During transformation, Blackout's (mind-numbingly delicate) Automorphing gimmick is activated when the user swings down his legs, which in turn flips the gray chest section his head is mounted upon up and into position. A better way to activate this feature is to push the tail down, which automorphs the legs and head without breaking the figure. Another, less impressive automorph is in his legs - If you pull his knees down, his shin armor pops out a bit.

: In robot mode, Blackout is not quite as accurate to his final CGI design as some of the other Movie toys are. Instead, it appears that his design is closer to that of his original concept art, back when he was called "Incinerator". Still, as is expected with the mainline movie toys, he features excellent articulation, with multi-ratcheting joints in his shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. The entire rotor assembly on his back can be removed and converted into a gigantic fan weapon, to vaguely represent the hand-held rotor-blade weapon he wields in the film, also seen on the Titanium figurine (see below). Because of the size of his rotor assembly, Blackout is also much smaller than most Voyager-class figures, barely larger than a Deluxe figure (particularly Barricade, only about a head taller).

: There are a couple significant flaws in Blackout's design: Firstly, the pegs that hold the fuselage (his robot legs) to the rotor/tail assembly do not provide enough friction to withstand the weight of the fuselage itself, causing it to detach from the body of the helicopter and droop down. Secondly, the gears in the cockpit's (his chest's) Automorphing gimmick can misalign themselves during transformation back in to vehicle mode, enough so that the chest/head section refuses to align with the cockpit halves.

: An interesting side note is that the two hard points located on Blackout's shoulders, intended to support his abominably large weapon, are actually the same size as the Mini-Con hardpoints on most post-Armada figures. This basically means he is the only Decepticon from the movie continuity who can Powerlinx. Though, considering how far-removed both continuities are, this is most likely something of an accident, as there is a lack of Powerlinx port details at the base of these hardpoints.

: This mold was retooled and redecoed into Evac for the AllSpark Power refresh of the Movie toyline.

*Decepticon Desert Attack (multi-pack, 2007)

: This package, based on their first appearance in the film, features an unchanged Voyager Blackout packaged with an unchanged Deluxe Scorponok, which was exclusively available at Toys "R" Us stores. Since Voyager Blackout was gang-molded with the miniature Scorponok figure the single release came with, this means that the set contains two Scorponok toys in different sizes.

:A much smaller and highly simplified version of the character, Legends Blackout features limited articulation and detail, with the helicopter mode not being a particularly faithful recreation of an MH-53 Pave Low (the placement of the fuel tanks, in particular). Even though the robot mode sports an attempt to emulate the movie character's chest design, this does not involve the use of obvious fake elements of the helicopter mode's cockpit, unlike other Legends Class toys of movie characters.
: This Voyager class Blackout repaint is exclusive to the Lawson Japan convenience store chain, with the purchase of the movie DVD. He is redecoed in a more realistic colour scheme for vehicle mode, 4500X markings and a drastically changed plastic colour scheme in robot mode (many parts once black are now silver or the same colour as his helicopter hull). Additionally, the mini-Scorponok figurine has been repainted in metallic colours and detailed to resemble the deluxe-class toy (and the movie CG design, of course).
: This three-inch figurine, as with all Titaniums, is partially made of die-cast metal and plastic, sculpted holding his rotor-blades as a hand weapon. Interestingly, Blackout has a more unique sculpt to him; the weapon is sculpted as it was briefly seen in the movie, but on the wrong hand. Blackout himself has an altered leg & foot design as well as having the main rotor-blades on his back excluded, matching it up more with the fact that instead of using his tail rotor, he uses his main rotor as a multi-purpose melee weapon, echoing the game render. His articulation is limited to his shoulders, head and waist, and he comes packaged with a movie-style Decepticon symbol display base.
*Optimus Prime vs. Blackout (2007)

Trivia
* Blackout was originally conceived as Soundwave, hence his symbiotic relationship with Scorponok, who was originally conceived as Ravage. Though this obviously changed, his portrayal in the Ghosts of Yesterday novel is rather Soundwave-esque. Likewise, in the IDW prequel comic, Blackout is the only Decepticon to land on Earth and acquire his alternate mode without any witnesses, whereas Starscream and Barricade had to kill existing witnesses. In the film itself, Blackout's only speaking role has him quickly reporting to Starscream's call... in Cybertronian, with he alone both hailing Megatron upon the All Spark's discovery and attempting to aid him in battle against Prime. What's more, all this "Soundwave-ness" is further enhanced by Hasbro's official bio, calling Blackout "his leader's hound".

* Apart from being a helicopter just like Vortex, which was also his original working name, Blackout's later working name, "Incinerator", is also accounted for in the same Hasbro bio, noting how Blackout will "fill the air with fire and burn the land clear to take his revenge".

* The period of time that Blackout acquired his vehicle mode in the film, three months prior to the unfolding events, appears to contradict the origin of his vehicle mode in IDW's Prime Directives prequel comics, with him apparently having scanned and destroyed the MH-53 Pave Low all the way back in 2003. It's maaaaybe possible that he just kept on destroying different Pave Lows over time to maintain his covert status (with the U.S. government covering it up) until he finally realized how close he was to a military network access point.

* Technically, Scorponok's scorpion mode is his robot mode, whereas his "alternate mode" is actually a part of Blackout's engine, as suggested by the Deluxe toy's various markings (which were also used for the CGI model and the life-sized props of Scorponok's head and tail). Oddly enough, though, those same markings can also be found on props used for the scene which features the US Navy dumping the Decepticons' remains into the ocean. So either Scorponok reattached himself to Blackout after he escaped the US Air Force's counter-attack in Qatar (and was therefore part of Blackout during the final battle), or Blackout somehow magically regrew the parts that were previously made up by Scorponok.

* During a transmission from Burger King's website, Optimus Prime has decreed that we are not to ride this helicopter. The current rideability of other helicopters the world over is unknown. Stand by for further updates as they become available.

===Transformers The Game (console)===
Autobot campaign

Snarl, along with Swoop, were the second set of Dinobots created by Wheeljack. They fought the previous Dinobot group who had been tricked by Megatron into joining the Decepticons. War of the Dinobots

Soon after a climatic battle between the Optimus Prime and Megatron, the Constructicons dug their way into the Ark in an attempt to destroy Teletraan I. Upon the sounding of the alarm, Snarl was among the Dinobots who drove the intruders outside the base. However, the Constructions unleashed their secret weapon by combining to form the mighty Devastator. Snarl was kicked by the giant, ending up hanging over the edge of a river of lava which then proceeded to burn his already damaged backside. It was not a very good day. Heavy Metal War

In the year 2005, Snarl is conspiciously absent during one of the most significant battles of the Great War, but was present in the aftermath of the Decepticon attack on Autobot City before dissapearing again. The Transformers: The Movie

By 2006, Snarl had become a little more talkative. He and Sludge were left to guard Cybertron when a seemingly ressurected Optimus Prime told them all that Hot Rod, Arcee, Ultra Magnus, and Kup were killed by the Quintessons, only to see them arrive after the Autobot fleet left. Despite Sludge's initial concern that the two Dinobots were dead, Snarl belated realized that something was wrong. Dark Awakening Snarl would often spend his free time fishing in a lake/pond with the other Dinobots. Their idea of fishing was wading out and grabbing fish with their teeth. He was among the first Dinobots to realize that there was something wrong with Grimlock after he was exposed to Anti-electrons, and the Dinobots temporarily ostracized him. They let Grimlock back after he transferred his super-intelligence to Computron. Grimlock's New Brain Later, he was among the Primitives summoned by Primacron's assistant to fight Tornedron. He objected to the "stupid Decepticon rhino's low opinion on Grimlock, and a brawl insued. Other than that, he didn't really contribute much to the Primitives adventures. Call of the Primitives

Snarl's growls, roars, and, uh, snarls are absolutely adorable.
Then in present day, he ended up with a dinosaur alt-mode.
*Snarl (Dinobot, 1985/1986/1991/1992)
: Japanese ID number: 29

: Snarl transforms from a robotic stegosaurus dinosaur bristling with gold vacuum-metalized armor plates, to a heavily armed robot armed with a red energo-blade, a smaller laser rifle and a rocket launcher with three black missiles.

: Snarl was later reissued in the European/Australian-exclusive "Classics" series (not to be confused with the 2006 Classics line). In Japan, he and the other Dinobots were offered as mail-away items during Operation Combination, at a cost of 2300 yen (his original retail price) and two robot points.

*Snarl (Action Master, 1990)

: Action Master Snarl is a non-transforming action figure that combines the animation model with toy-details and a few other new flourishes. He was sold on an individual card with his transforming partner Tyrannitron. He is compatible with any other Action Master weapon or vehicle.

Generation 2
*Snarl (Dinobot, 1993)

: The original Snarl toy went through several iterations in the Generation 2 line. First, he was re-released in the original silver base color without his missile launcher; the only notable difference in the toy proper is the inclusion of the "AUTOBOT" tampograph on one of his robot-mode legs.

: The toy then had its silver changed to green, and then changed again to red. The final red coloration is the most common, while the green and silver variations go for a little more on the secondary market.

Trivia
*In Heavy Metal War, Snarl demonstrated the ability to shoot lasers out of his nostrils. This is awesome.

* The original Snarl toy was part of Takara's Diaclone Dinosaur Robo series. When Hasbro imported the toy for the Transformers line, the Diaclone driver mini-figure was dropped and the robot mode's black torso was turned to a more team-matching red.

* Action Master Snarl is the only carded returning-character Autobot Action Master to have an animal/robot partner rather than a giant accessory in the US line. Whether or not his partner Tyrannitron was originally intended to go with Kick-Off --who got a giant accessory rather than an animal/robot partner like all the other new-character Action Masters-- is unknown.

* According to his toy bio, the Beast Machines era Dinobot Striker is rumored to be one of the original Generation 1 Dinobots. If this is true, his stegosaur mode and energy absorbing spinal plates strongly point towards his being Snarl.

Dirge is a master of using fear as a weapon. Mournful, morose, and silent, his behavior gives even close comrades like Ramjet the creeps. Dirge actively cultivates this atmosphere; his engines are even tuned to generate fear in all who hear them. Few realize, however, that this need to instill fear is part of an overwhelming need for control over his own situation. Should things spiral out of control, Dirge falls victim to paralyzing fear himself and his usefulness as a warrior vanishes.

True to his name, he tends to die a lot.
Marvel Comics continuity
Generation 1
Dirge was on Cybertron serving under Straxus when contact was first made with the long-lost Earthbound Decepticons. The Smelting Pool! After Straxus's death, Dirge and his fellow "coneheads" were the second team of Decepticons to travel to Earth via the space bridge. Aerialbots over America! Megatron had instructed that their jet modes be altered to resemble "Terran craft" which had previously been seen in a Blackrock aerospace plant under Shockwave's control. Brainstorm!

Their mission was to defend a giant drill that would bore through Hoover Dam and siphon the Colorado River through the space bridge to the waterless Cybertron, where Decepticon turbines would generate "enough energy to power Cybertron for years." But just as the drill began its work, the Aerialbots intervened. Dirge found his fear-inducing ability was particularly effective against the acrophobic Silverbolt, but the other Decepticons fared poorly enough that a retreat was eventually called.

When the Decepticons later allied with Cobra, Dirge was assigned to be an emissary among the humans. Ashes, Ashes... This would be unfortunate for the luckless Seeker. When Serpentor realized the Decepticons were going to destroy the Earth, he needed a token of conciliation to show the Autobots. So in the middle of a battle against Omega Supreme, Serpentor goaded Dirge into attacking the giant with everything he had. Serpentor then pressed a button in the cockpit of his own jet, "jamming" Dirge's "frequencies," which caused the Seeker's weapons to lock up and explode when he tried to fire.

The explosion tore Dirge apart, and he wouldn't be seen again for years.
Generation 2
Dirge reappeared among the Decepticon forces just long enough to sacrifice himself futilely against the Swarm, self-destructing alongside Nightbeat. Moments later, Megatron showed up with the rheanimum that could have saved him.

Timelines Classics
:(<b>Note:</b> This series follows from Marvel G1 but disregards the UK and G2 comics.)

While the war seemingly ended with Bludgeon's defeat at Klo, Megatron was quietly gathering the remains of forgotten Earthbound casualties and rebuilding them. Dirge was among his resurrections, but the Seeker chose to follow the exiled Bludgeon instead. This would prove an unfortunate choice, as Dirge soon ended up in the cerebro-shelled thrall of Bug Bite.

When Bug Bite decided to try and subvert Megatron himself, Dirge was on the team accompanying him to Earth. Games of Deception As Bug Bite and Megatron confronted each other, the Autobots ambushed them, freeing many of Bug Bite's troops with a cerebro-shell jammer. It's unclear whether Dirge's shell was disabled, but the point is somewhat moot; Grimlock shot him in the chest, leaving him lying on the floor with extinguished optics.
Animated continuity
:Voice actor: Bud Davis (US), Keiichi Nanba (Japan)

Dirge appeared without explanation on Earth under Megatron's command a year or two after the Ark-borne Transformers awoke. His first notable activity was joining in a raid on Dinobot Island, where he was eventually chewed on and thrown bodily by one of the time-lost dinosaurs.

Megatron said Dirge and the other two coneheads were "supposed to be the most powerful jets in the galaxy." The Girl Who Loved Powerglide But if Megatron was serious, then they certainly didn't do much to live up to that reputation. They were loyal enough troopers, participating in all the usual Decepticon mischief, but not much more than that.

Dirge's first apparent death was during Unicron's attack on Cybertron in 2005. All three coneheads (or Seekers who looked like them) were seen flying into Unicron's mouth and exploding. The Transformers: The Movie (1986) However, Dirge soon turned up again in Carbombya, hiding with Ramjet amongst President Fakkadi's air force. Five Faces of Darkness, Part 1 Fakkadi denied their presence to the Autobots, but Outback psyched the two Decepticons out by walking around the airfield with what he claimed was a "Decepticon detector." When the coneheads tried to escape, Outback used a smoke grenade to make them crash, then tore the location of Chaar out of them with his steely gaze.

The two hapless Decepticons somehow escaped Autobot captivity, though, because they later participated in a full-scale assault on Cybertron. Five Faces of Darkness, Part 5 They chose to strafe Ultra Magnus, who dispatched them both with well-timed punches that sent them careening into buildings. They exploded quite utterly (even Ramjet, who you'd think would be used to it).

And yet they later appeared again on Chaar, failing to defend Trypticon against the ghost of Starscream. Ghost in the Machine In fact, Galvatron tried to execute the coneheads and the Battlechargers for their inability to stop the wraith. But they were saved when Starscream possessed Trypticon himself and launched into space, Dirge and the others onboard. When they saw that Starscream was using Trypticon to connect Unicron's head to Cybertron, they sabotaged the dinosaur from within. It's unknown whether that got them back in Galvatron's good graces; this was their last appearance.

<b>Note:</b> When Octane was seeking refuge in the Decepticon Crypt, he paused in front of a statue and said, "I know, 'Death comes to anyone who hides behind my marker.'" Starscream's Ghost This may have been intended to be a reference to Dirge, who sometimes spoke that way. But the statue bore only a very vague resemblance to him, and he would appear prominently in Ghost in the Machine, which had to take place afterwards. Plus it's highly unlikely the Decepticons would've been able to - or bothered to - erect the monument on Autobot-controlled Cybertron.

Find Your Fate Junior
Desert Flight
This is a multipath adventure with no one fixed outcome.

Dirge is the Decepticon defending the anti-gravity base, striking fear in the Autobots. In one outcome, he succeeds in destroying Optimus Prime, only to be destroyed himself by the Autobot leader's final shot. In the end, Prime' sacrifice spurs the Autobots to fight on to victory! Some days, you just can't win.

Dirge is the most overpowering Decepticon in this story, but he can be defeated by a surprise attack. Alternately, if both Ramjet and Thrust are defeated, Dirge will retreat.

Dreamwave comics continuity
Dirge participated in Shockwave's offensive against Iacon shortly after Optronix took the Matrix. During the Dark Ages, he joined up with Starscream's Predacon faction, and attempted to disrupt the peace treaty at Tyger Pax...only to have the combined forces of the Autobots, Decepticons, and Ultracons brought against him. Guess death comes to he who has no common sense.

After the Great Shutdown was over, Dirge became one of Shockwave's top agents, and traveled to Earth to help collect the former crews of the Ark and Nemesis. Back on Cybertron, he helped defend Shockwave empire when the Autobots finally rose up against him, but was defeated along with the rest of the Decepticons. Somehow he escaped detention, and joined up with Shockwave and his remaining flunkies in the wastelands, hidden in an underground bunker while planning their next move. When Megatron arrived with his new Predacons, though, Dirge quickly assessed his priorities and agreed to save under the old Decepticon commander for the duration. The Route of All Evil
* Simon Furman originally planned for Dirge and the other "coneheads" to appear and defend the Nemesis in the conclusion to Beast Wars, but this plot point was dropped due to time and budget constraints. Furman was so disappointed at his missed chance to use Dirge (whom he appreciated because he has a "...a cool doom-laden name"), that he chose the character to be one of Unicron's heralds in the Armada comic's "Worlds Collide" arc.
* The day after final colors were applied to the Timelines comic where Dirge apparently falls dead, colorist Drew Eiden found this article and noted to editor Pete Sinclair how ironic it was. Whether the comic was actually <i>intended</i> to continue Dirge's death-trend is unknown. (This was revealed by Eiden during the Collector's Club panel at 2007.)
A 'bot with two sides. On the one hand, Waverider is the peaceful sort, enjoying the freedom his alternate mode provides him under the waves, and the chance to explore the deep looking for lost treasure or sunken vessels. On the other hand, Waverider is a steadfast warrior and the fiercest of opponents in a fight. He is more than willing to go the extra mile that other Autobots might not, due to a lack of fighting instinct or general distaste for warfare. Waverider knows what he's fighting for, and recognizes the need to fight for it.
Waverider demonstrated a knack for going above and beyond the call of duty. He was one of few Autobots who ever attempted to reach out to the distraught Dinobot commander Grimlock, though his "tough love" speech nearly got him skewered on the end of an energo-sword. Like many Decepticon leaders, Thunderwing strikes a delicate balance between calm composure and explosive rage (what humans would call "bipolar tendencies"). Thunderwing wants to be admired and respected by his subordinates, but all too often he can be caught in a consuming obsession that leads him down the irreversible path of darkness, bringing his entire home plant to the brink of destruction in several universes.

:(Note: Events in italics occurred only in the Marvel UK books.)

Thunderwing was a driven Decepticon who rose quickly from relative obscurity to a command position in the ranks. He made a bid for full leadership of the Decepticons to the High Council, and they decided to test him with a hunting mission -- three Autobot prisoners were released on Earth, and Thunderwing was charged with chasing down and executing them on his own. While Playback and Horsepower did fall before his cyclone cannon, the last runner Hosehead was saved by his fellow Autobots Nightbeat and Siren. The Headmasters exploded the fuel core in Playback's corpse at close range to Thunderwing, nearly cooking him alive inside his own impenetrable Pretender shell. Shrieking in agony, Thunderwing plunged into the nearby surf. The Big Shutdown

Thunderwing eventually rose from the waters, his still-cooling shell juxtaposed with the growing intensity of his rage at being beaten. Thunderwing lashed out at everything around him, and very nearly destroyed a ship of his fellow Decepticons who had been sent to find him. As a duly appointed officer of the Decepticon High Council, Ruckus was sent to inform Thunderwing that his bid for leadership was not being rejected outright, but was still under review and the Councillors had asked that he return to Cybertron. Instead, Thunderwing violently conscripted Ruckus and his team into joining him for an assault on the Ark, in order to get revenge on Hosehead and his ilk. Thunderwing single-handed blasted his way into the Ark and confronted Optimus Prime directly, before Ruckus convinced him to save the fight for another day. Returning to Cybertron, Thunderwing was surprised to learn that the Decepticon High Council was impressed by his initiative and the strength of his vendetta, and granted him full leadership of the Decepticons of Cybertron. Rage! Assault on the Ark!

One of Thunderwing's first actions on taking over Decepticon leadership was to abolish neutral territories, making places such as Maccadam's Old Oil House Decepticon-only establishments. Out to Lunch

Lord Thunderwing became displeased with the growing success of Jazz, Grimlock, and Bumblebee and their raiding of Decepticon fuel depositories. He ordered Bludgeon, Octopunch and Stranglehold -- the Mayhem Attack Squad -- to find and kill the Autobot Pretenders.

At the beginning of the Matrix Quest, Thunderwing began to take matters into his own hands. After learning of the Matrix from some captured Autobots, he realized that it was the key to power beyond comprehension. His obsession with finding the Creation Matrix caused some concerns for the Decepticons under his command (as they did not know of the Matrix's true power), he even attacked his own troops when accused of taking his personal quest too far.

It was at this time that Thunderwing revealed that he was one of the select few Transformers, and indeed, the only known Decepticon, to possess a natural affinity for the Matrix. He was one of the very few who could actually use the powers of The Matrix. (Whether this makes him an actual Matrix Templar like Snarl or Hot Rod is unclear.)

After forming a psychic link with an immense whale-like alien called a Kludd whom had been restored from the brink of extinction by the Matrix's power, Thunderwing learned where the Matrix was last seen: the third moon of Cameron. Thunderwing immediately set out to retrieve it, much to the disapproval of his troops.

As it would happen, between the revival of the Kludd and the arrival of Thunderwing, The Creation Matrix had become warped. A dying alien "Deathbringer" had touched the Matrix, and was fully healed and recreated by its power. This malevolent entity gave The Matrix its first taste of evil. Later, another creature found the Matrix: a parasitic insect which existed purely to kill and destroy. The Matrix, now quite fascinated by the nature of darkness, restored and improved the creature, considering it to be the single most evil creature it had ever seen. This new creature was referred to as the Matrix Spawn and would serve as its vessel.

Meanwhile, the Autobot Pretenders, having escaped from the Mayhem Attack Squad, arrived on Cameron after hearing the reports of a research team on that moon. The researchers had discovered an incredible power source inside Optimus Prime's old body -- shortly before being slaughtered by the Matrix Spawn creature. The Autobots could only assume that the described "power source" was the Creation Matrix.

When Thunderwing arrived on Cameron, he attacked the Autobot Pretenders. The battle was pre-empted by the arrival of the Matrix Spawn however. Thunderwing, possessing a natural affinity for The Matrix, managed to catch The Spawn off guard, causing it to flee with Thunderwing in pursuit.

The Spawn fled straight to the Matrix, where it met Thunderwing in mortal combat. The Spawn was defeated, and the Matrix was Thunderwing's prize.

In the final issue of the Matrix Quest mini-series, Thunderwing, using his new found power as a result of having the Matrix, moved to the Ark with the intention of destroying the Autobots.

After nearly beating Optimus Prime using the power of the matrix, the other Decepticons under Thunderwing's command realized how completely Thunderwing had fallen, and turned against him. After being damaged by one of the Pretenders, the true scope of relationship between The Matrix and Thunderwing was revealed. The Matrix's newly found evil influence was even enough to dwarf Thunderwing's own judgement, and was controlling him!

After Thunderwing (or "The Vessel" as the Matrix called him) was damaged, The Matrix manifested itself as an immense spectral demon. This new entity proved to be too much for both Autobots and Decepticons to handle. After seeing what he had become, Thunderwing struggled to break free of The Matrix's control. While the Thunderwing/Matrix demon was distracted, the course of the battle shifted.

During the turmoil, the Autobots who had been captured by Thunderwing earlier in the Matrix Quest story-line had gotten free. Nightbeat managed to fire the Decepticon ship's grappling hook into Thunderwing's shoulder. They then launched the ship out of the Ark, and detonated it, apparently destroying both Thunderwing and the Matrix. This saved all the Transformers on board, but left no method for defending themselves from the coming threat of Unicron.

Only when Unicron finally arrived on Cybertron, did the corrupted Matrix and Thunderwing reappear. Despite now being corrupted and enraptured by the nature of darkness, The Matrix was created to destroy Unicron. It could not deny this aspect of its existence.

Sensing its ancient nemesis, The Matrix rebuilt Thunderwing, who promptly sped to Cybertron. Unfortunately, because the Matrix was now a product of evil, it had no effect upon Unicron, who destroyed the Decepticon completely with a massive burst of energy, ending Thunderwing's career permanently. On the Edge of Extinction!
Seven hundred years ago, during the height of the Autobot-Decepticon war on Cybertron, Thunderwing was a Decepticon scientist who alerted both sides to the damage that the ongoing conflict was doing to their planet and the resultant danger of an impending catastrophic event. According to Bludgeon, his warnings were ignored, even by Jetfire.

.]]
Subsequently, Thunderwing took action on his own, subjecting himself to a "polydermal grafting" process of his own design, one that had previously been summarily rejected by Megatron as "unnatural" and "ill-concieved." This process, of grafting tissue culled from living subjects onto a Transformer to create an armored symbiotic carapace, somehow also appears to have made him the avatar of the very apocalypse he had warned against. The process drove Thunderwing insane but made him invulnerable; even the combined might of the Autobots and Decepticons coudn't stop him. In the end, he was swallowed whole by Cybertron itself, leaving the planet completely uninhabitable.

When Shockwave went missing, Megatron assigned Bludgeon to dig into his research and find out what he was up to. An indeterminate time later, Thunderwing's resting place was discovered by a group of Decepticons led by Bludgeon, who planned to continue where Thunderwing left off. The project was completed in the present day, using a combinaton of "Ultra-Energon" (culled from Shockwave's research) and a set of imprinted commands. Thunderwing was thus resurrected, and immediately departed for Nebulos following Bludgeon's plans to sacrifice that world to somehow restore Cybertron. There, Thunderwing was engaged by the Decepticon Infiltration team in place, which did not want to see Nebulos completely destroyed. After Thunderwing totalled Crankcase, Ruckus, and Roadgrabber, the survivors, Dreadwind, Darkwing, and Thrust, abandoned the planet, leaving Thunderwing alone. However, after the destruction of Bludgeon's control harness, Thunderwing changed course - back towards Cybertron.

There, he was attacked by Optimus Prime, the Wreckers, the Predacons, and reprogrammed Centurion drones. Jetfire revealed that enough punishment would eventually cause Thunderwing to drain most of his Energon reserves. However, Thunderwing revealed a third "Ultra" robot configuration. Thanks to the Wreckers, the Decepticons, the instability of Ultra Energon, and a speech/salvo combination from Optimus Prime, he was stopped dead in his tracks. His innanimate form was taken into custody by the Autobots. Stormbringer (comics)

spoiler

Galvatron would later steal Thunderwing's body from Hound's detail of Autobots, in service of his master in the Dead Universe. Whether they plan to revive Thunderwing, duplicate his grafting process or something else is yet unknown. Spotlight: Galvatron

:Drill Bit is a Mini-Con from the Armada portion of the Unicron Trilogy continuity family.

Drill Bit is only interested in one thing: busting some heads. The enforcer of the Destruction Mini-Con Team, Drill Bit honestly doesn't care about Dualor's plans of independence, he just likes having a good excuse to engage in his favorite pastime. He'd even happily work with the Decepticons if it came down to it, for that matter. So long as he gets to hit people and break stuff.

Armada cartoon
Drill Bit's Mini-Con storage panel was discovered in a long-abandoned subway tunnel by Cyclonus. The duo Powerlinxed, but since the Decepticons had accomplished their mission with Drill Bit's acquisition, they teleported away. Underground
*Destruction Mini-Con Team (Basic, 2002/2003)
:Japanese ID number: MM-04

: Drill Bit transforms into treaded tunneling machine. He features a gear-wheel system that causes his drill to spin when he is rolled in vehicle mode. He can also be attached to the underside of the Armada Cyclonus mold, interacting with the Decepticon’s gear-wheel rotor system.

: This mold was also used to make Gritbit and Monocle.

*Sandstorm & Cannon with Destruction Micron (Multi-pack, 2003)
:Japanese ID number: MS-04

: In Japan, the Destruction Team was available both as an individual Team, and in a multi-pack with Cyclonus.

*Destruction Microns X-Dimension (Basic, 2003)
:Japanese ID number: MM-09

: A limited-edition (yet still standard retail) redeco of the Destruction Team was released in Japan. The entire team was given an orange and gray color scheme.

*Crush Undergrove Edition (Mini-Con, 2003)

: Exclusive to Ito Yokaido stores in Japan, one member of the "Undergrove Edition" Destruction Team was given at random to customers who bought Micron Legend product in January (or until they ran out of them).

*Crush White Micron (Mini-Con, 2003)

: In April, Japanese "TF Station" affiliate stores gave out solid-white versions of the Destruction Team as part of the "Golden Week" holiday. These pieces were made with the intent of being "paint your own" versions.

*Crush Space Galaxy Edition (Mini-Con pack-in, 2003)

: In May, Jusco stores in Japan got in special versions of Convoy Super Mode that contained one member of the "Space Galaxy Edition" Destruction Team per box... but the bonus Mini-Cons were blind-packed inside the boxes. As such, this version of the Team is among the most expensive of the promotional Mini-Cons on the secondary market.

*Road Wrecker Mini-Con Team (Basic, 2003)

: Late in the Armada line, a redeco of the Destruction Team was put out under a new Team name (but as the same individual characters). This version is primarily green with gray parts.

*Blurr with Incinerator and Bonus Mini-Con (Bonus pack, 2003)
*Sideways with Rook & Crosswise and Bonus Mini-Con (Bonus pack, 2003)

: In November of 2003, US Toys "R" Us stores had special bonus pack Max-Con (Deluxe) toys, which came with a single bonus Mini-Con attached to the card over their sticker, for less than the price as a normal Max-Con during Toys "R" Us' post-Thanksgiving-day sale. Each of the Destruction Team Mini-Cons could come packaged with either Blurr or Sideways.

*Road Wrecker Mini-Con Team & Night Attack Mini-Con Team

: An unaltered version of the Road Wrecker Team was released as part of an Energon-series "Mini-Con 6-pack" with the Night Attack Mini-Con Team.
