It is not uncommon at all for a single Transformer to change body form many times across their life-span. The ease with which they can do so depends on the continuity's technology level. In some, changing bodies requires an extensive full-body rebuild and tends to be resource-draining and even dangerous. Sometimes, however, all it takes is to transplant their brain or personality program into a compatible new body. Other times, the existing body itself will be "reformatted" on the spot using a scan of a local compatible alt-mode.

Getting a new body sometimes also involves [[renaming|getting a new name]].

Throughout the [[Transformer|Transformers]] multiverse are many Transformers who consider themselves family and refer to each other as such. The most common case is when two Transformers regard each other as siblings. Transformers even occasionally express familial relationships with non-Transformers.

Given that Transformers are not organic life and likely do not [[Reproduction|reproduce sexually]], the origin, distinction, and exact meaning of many of these terms is frequently unclear.

== Possible explanations ==
The [[Dreamwave Productions|Dreamwave]] ''[[Transformers: More than Meets the Eye|More Than Meets The Eye]]'' guide provides a partial possible answer. According to the guide, when a [[spark]] naturally splits as it's being introduced to a [[protoform]], it creates two robots who are "brothers", (or [[twin]]s), such as Sideswipe and Sunstreaker. When such a spark division is artificially induced, the less balanced and self-reliant pair created are referred to as [[Cloning|"clones"]]. (This definition of "brother" may or may not apply to [[Optimus Prime (RID)| RID Prime]] and [[Ultra Magnus (RID)| Magnus]], whose brotherhood was said to result from the special circumstance of having been created simultaneously by [[Alpha Trion (RID)| Alpha Trion]]).

However, the "[[Beast Era]]" widened the issue of reproduction with [[Rattrap]] referring to his "great-aunt" [[Arcee (G1)|Arcee]] and in general the practice of [[Maximal]]s and [[Predacon (BW)|Predacons]] referring to the [[Autobot]]s and [[Decepticon]]s as their respective "ancestors", as well as themselves as being their "descendants", implying a direct [[DNA|genetic]] (for want of a better term) lineage. Various sources of debatable [[Canon|canonicity]] suggest that [[Optimus Primal]] is specifically descended from [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]], usually through the phrase "his ancestor Optimus Prime." In the absence of [[Reproduction#Sexual_reproduction| sexual reproduction]], the use and meaning of these genealogical references is difficult to explain. One possible explanation might be a situation such as when [[Airazor (BW)|Airazor]] is brought to life. Her spark and protoform are heavily damaged, and [[Cheetor (BW)|Cheetor]] allows some of his parts to be used as replacements while [[Rhinox (BW)|Rhinox]] guides the procedure. {{storylink|The Spark}} To compare to [[human]] procedures, this is something like assisting with childbirth and donating blood or organs. Crawling into Powerglide's cockpit and interfacing with his computer, the puppy communicated with the Autobot and told him that he would transfer the rapidly fading super science into his new friend so that he could defeat [[Bruticus (G1)|Bruticus]]. The super science allowed Powerglide to briefly activate a new form of [[Scramble Power]] and combine with the other Minibots into the "[[Minibot combiner|Minibot Warrior Spiral attack]]". The ridiculous new attack drilled a hole through Bruticus, forcing the Decepticon [[combiner]] to flee back to base for repairs.

First, his hood conceals a ridiculously powerful iron-cobalt magnet, which he can use to tailgate closely beside other vehicles and travel far into enemy territory without fuel. Second, his bizarre ''idées fixes'' make him extremely poor company for other [[Autobot|Autobots]].

Nobody knows where Tailgate got his screws knocked loose. Some say he was traumatized in a hazing ritual that went terribly wrong; others think it's simply the length of the war taking its toll. At any rate, he began causing problems soon after arriving on [[Earth]], proclaiming speed limits to be an affront to liberty, and attempting to liberate "enslaved" household appliances from their alleged slavemasters. Nothing the veteran Autobots could do would dissuade him from his mad quest, or convince him that the machines of Earth were non-sentient. Eventually, it was decided to make him a scout, with strict orders not to break cover for any reason.

Still, every time he sees a bicycle chained to a pole, his [[spark]] burns hot with righteous anger. "Some day, my brothers will wear no chains," he thinks. "Some day, we shall break free!"
