It is not uncommon at all for a single Transformer to change body form many times across their life-span. The ease with which they can do so depends on the continuity's technology level. In some, changing bodies requires an extensive full-body rebuild and tends to be resource-draining and even dangerous. Sometimes, however, all it takes is to transplant their brain or personality program into a compatible new body. Other times, the existing body itself will be "reformatted" on the spot using a scan of a local compatible alt-mode.

Getting a new body sometimes also involves getting a new name.

Methods
*Adaptation — As a survival mechanism, when a Transformer is stranded on an alien world a Transformer's onboard idento-computer may adapt the Transformer's body to be more compatible to the local environment. Side-effects may include extreme independence, distrust of authority figures, animalistic mindsets, and speech impediments. Generation 1 cartoon continuity
*Mechanical reconstruction — A Transformer's form is reconstructed into a new form manually through hard work, often after the Transformer is badly injured. This is sometimes accomplished by humans. Generation 1, Movie continuity
*Divine Intervention — Unicron and Primus can reconfigure Transformers for their own purposes, or to bolster the strength of one of the factions. Generation 1, Universe (2003), Cybertron
*Scanning — A Transformer has on-board systems that allow him to scan a new form himself and immediately take on the new form. This process is sometimes aided by a separate automated mechanism, particularly if the bot in question is incapacitated at the time. Beast Wars, Robots in Disguise, Unicron Trilogy, Movie continuity, Animated, Action Blast
:*Trans-scanning is a particularly adaptable form of personal scanning. Movie continuity
*Matrix bearing — Some Transformers, upon taking possession of the Matrix, are instantly upgraded to a new body. This process reverses whenever the Matrix is not held by the Transformer. Generation 1
*Transference — A Transformer's essence (personality component, spark, or simply their mind) is transferred to a new body or into a blank protoform. Generation 1, Beast Wars, Animated
*Internal Reconfiguration Matrix — This device has allowed Optimus Prime to alter his vehicle modes. Optimus Prime (G1)/toys Generation 2
*Vok technology — During the Beast Wars, Transformer bodies were altered by Vok technology (deliberately or accidentally) into Transmetals, Transmetal 2s, and Fuzors. Beast Wars
*Reformatting — In Beast Machines, reformatting is the process by which a Transformer is converted to a technorganic form. Beast Machines
*Omega Lock + burning justice — By believing in himself, a Transformer may sometimes cause the "Power of Primus through the Omega Lock" Critical to upgrade him into a new body. Cybertron
*Off-panel — Sometimes Transformers would arrive at a new place with a new alternate mode with little explanation, but it is implied they were mechanically altered by technology aboard their ship or back at base. Marvel Comics continuity, IDW Generation 1 continuity

Fiction
Generation 1
US cartoon continuity
*Adaptation — While stranded by themselves on Earth, the Insecticons' idento-computers adapted their forms to be able to process plant life for energy. It is not stated how long this took, nor were further details provided. They were discovered four million years later. A Plague of Insecticons
*Mechanical reconstruction — Orion Pax and Ariel were mechanically recreated into Optimus Prime and Elita One. War Dawn The computer aboard the Ark scanned the surroundings for suitable local life-forms then physically rebuilt damaged Transformers with altmodes to blend into their surroundings. More than Meets the Eye, Part 1 After being severely injured, Bumblebee was rebuilt into Goldbug by a Quintesson. The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 2
*Matrix bearing — Hot Rod was instantly upgraded to Rodimus Prime after taking possession of the Matrix. The Transformers: The Movie
*Unicron — Unicron upgraded Galvatron, Cyclonus, Scourge, the Sweeps, and Cyclonus's Armada from wounded Decepticons. The Transformers: The Movie
*Transference — Starscream liberated the Combaticons' personality components from the Decepticon Detention Center and installed them into new bodies. Starscream's Brigade Brawl had his personality temporarily transferred into a human-built robot. B.O.T. (episode)

Marvel Comics continuity
*Mechanical reconstruction — The computer aboard the Ark scanned the surroundings for suitable local life-forms then physically rebuilt damaged Transformers with altmodes to blend into their surroundings. The Last Stand The Transformers (issue) Spanner was rebuilt by Decepticon engineers to have a space bridge alternate mode. The Bridge to Nowhere! Bumblebee was rebuilt into Goldbug by [[G.I. *Matrix bearing — Hot Rod was instantly upgraded to Rodimus Prime after taking possession of the Matrix. Transformers Universe (Marvel comic) Space Pirates!
*Unicron — Unicron upgraded Galvatron, Cyclonus, Scourge, and the Sweeps from wounded Decepticons. Transformers Universe (Marvel comic) Target: 2006
*Transference — The Ark created new bodies for five Autobots who had their minds encoded on crystals before the Ark left Cybertron. Rock and Roll-Out! Before he was destroyed, Optimus Prime's personality was saved on a floppy disk by Ethan Zachary. His personality was later downloaded from that disk into his powermaster body. People Power!
*Off-panel — Megatron had the bodies of the Insecticons and Coneheads adapted to forms more appropriate for Earth. Aerialbots over America! After being restored to individual robots after having been used for parts to make Circuit Breaker's Autobot suit, several of the Cybertronian Autobots apparently took the opportunity to change to Earth forms. Decepticon Graffiti! The Predacons took on Earth forms on orders from Shockwave. Gone but Not Forgotten!

Japanese cartoon continuity
*Transference — After being critically wounded, Ginrai was given a new body and a new identity as Victory Leo. Fight!! Victory Leo

IDW Generation 1 comics
*Off-panel — Many Transformers have been shown to change bodies with relative ease between scenes with very little explanation of the process. However, upgrades to become more war-like are apparently somewhat more involved and require the Body Augmentation Program.

Hearts of Steel
*Off-panel — Bumblebee changed from his Ice Age Wars body into a train engine of his original design in a matter of seconds. Other characters also take on new forms with relative ease.

Beast Era
*Transference — Prior to the Beast Wars, the Autobots and Decepticons underwent the Great Upgrade, taking on smaller, more fuel-efficient bodies as Maximals and Predacons. Sparkwar Pt. II: The Search

Beast Wars cartoon
*Scanning — Upon arrival on Earth, DNA scanners attached to CR chambers and stasis pods scanned various indigenous lifeforms living and dead, and gave their inhabitants new bodies with organic elements in order to protect them from the dangerous levels of residual energon. Beast Wars (Part 1)
*Vok technology — The destruction of the Planet Buster caused a quantum surge, upgrading Megatron, Tarantulas, Rattrap, Cheetor and a bunch of protoforms into Transmetal bodies in its wake. Aftermath Megatron later found the Vok's Transmetal driver, and through experimentation with the device upgraded himself, Cheetor, Dinobot II and Blackarachnia into Transmetal 2 bodies. Feral Scream Part 1 Crossing the Rubicon The Vok personally removed Tigatron and Airazor's sparks and combined their bodies into that of Tigerhawk. The discarded sparks then merged together and re-entered the body as one. Other Victories
*Transference — After he had lost his body, Optimus Primal's spark was given a Transmetal protoform. Coming of the Fuzors (Part 2)
*Matrix bearing — While not actually the Matrix, taking on Optimus Prime's spark together with his own had a similar effect on Optimus Primal, causing him to upgrade into a new "Optimal Optimus" body. Optimal Situation

Beast Machines cartoon
*Vok technology (indirectly) — Once back on Cybertron, Megatron created an army of Vehicon drones and a gas that causes paralysis in Transformers, and used them to harvest the sparks of Maximals and Predacons alike. Those that were previously made Transmetals by the Vok were not paralysed by the gas, but instead regressed into their pre-Transmetal bodies. Revelations Part II: Descent
*Reformatting — Optimus Primal used the power of prayer to reformat the unharvested Maximals into new technorganic bodies. The Reformatting
*Mechanical reconstruction — Megatron chose to revive the sparks of Waspinator, Silverbolt and Rhinox in drone bodies as Jetstorm, Thrust and Tankor. Fires of the Past
*Transference — When Megatron tried to purge his organic element, his spark bounced around between the bodies of Noble, Grand Mal, a Diagnostic Drone and finally Optimal Optimus. Prometheus Unbound Spark of Darkness Endgame Pt. II: When Legends Fall

Transtech
*Transference - In Axiom Nexus, Bug Bite got his cortex transferred to a new body at Swindle, Swindle & Swindle. Withered Hope

Movieverse
*Trans-scanning - Bumblebee has been shown to modify his Chevrolet Camaro form every once in a while.

Transformers (2007)
*Trans-scanning - Various Autobots scanned various vehicles nearby after crash-landing in their transition forms. Transformers (2007) The Decepticons did the same, but with more death.

Revenge of the Fallen
*Trans-scanning - After the battle in Shanghai, Skids and Mudflap returned to NEST headquarters, traded in their combined ice cream truck mode, and scanned a Chevy Beat and a Chevy Trax, respectively. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (film)
*Mechanical reconstruction/AllSpark - When Megatron was being revived by the Constructicons and Scalpel, they used a sliver of the AllSpark and the parts of an unfortunate excavator to bring him back to life, giving him a new bulkier body with a second flying space-tank alternate mode. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (film)

Dark of the Moon
*Trans-scanning - With Transformers now public knowledge, the scarred Megatron scanned a M915 Line-Haul in order to disguise himself.
*Mechanical reconstruction - When Mirage and Wheeljack were severely damaged in battle by Shockwave, Rising Storm issue 4 Ratchet remarked that they probably wouldn't be quite the same after repairs. He managed to fix them and give them new bodies in the process, and they were renamed "Dino" and "Que", respectively. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (film)
**Shockwave himself was critically beaten by Optimus Prime during the battle, but was saved by his pet Driller and taken to the Decepticon base in Namibia for repairs. Rising Storm issue 4

Animated
Animated cartoon
*Transference - Starscream attached his head (with his spark imbedded in it) to a new body created with a clone shell and a protoform. Endgame, Part I

Throughout the Transformers multiverse are many Transformers who consider themselves family and refer to each other as such. The most common case is when two Transformers regard each other as siblings. Transformers even occasionally express familial relationships with non-Transformers.

Given that Transformers are not organic life and likely do not reproduce sexually, the origin, distinction, and exact meaning of many of these terms is frequently unclear.

Possible explanations
The Dreamwave More Than Meets The Eye guide provides a partial possible answer. According to the guide, when a spark naturally splits as it's being introduced to a protoform, it creates two robots who are "brothers", (or twins), such as Sideswipe and Sunstreaker. When such a spark division is artificially induced, the less balanced and self-reliant pair created are referred to as "clones". (This definition of "brother" may or may not apply to RID Prime and Magnus, whose brotherhood was said to result from the special circumstance of having been created simultaneously by Alpha Trion).

However, the "Beast Era" widened the issue of reproduction with Rattrap referring to his "great-aunt" Arcee and in general the practice of Maximals and Predacons referring to the Autobots and Decepticons as their respective "ancestors", as well as themselves as being their "descendants", implying a direct genetic (for want of a better term) lineage. Various sources of debatable canonicity suggest that Optimus Primal is specifically descended from Optimus Prime, usually through the phrase "his ancestor Optimus Prime." In the absence of sexual reproduction, the use and meaning of these genealogical references is difficult to explain. One possible explanation might be a situation such as when Airazor is brought to life. Her spark and protoform are heavily damaged, and Cheetor allows some of his parts to be used as replacements while Rhinox guides the procedure. The Spark To compare to human procedures, this is something like assisting with childbirth and donating blood or organs. It seems unlikely that this happened enough to cause two large societies to consider themselves "descendants" of two other large ancient societies.

Other family designations exist as well. Wheelie has "parents" who were lost in his crash on Quintessa, according to some background material. The Mini-Con Twirl very specifically calls Falcia her "mother" (which Falcia hates) and seems to treat Redline like a father, since the two's spark frame energies went into constructing her physical form. Linkage Part 7 In the Armada cartoon, Side Swipe refers to Hot Shot as his brother after Hot Shot saves his life, suggesting at least an understanding of the concept; on the other hand, the Armada cartoon is originally Japanese, and in Japan, 'brother' and 'sister' can be used as terms of affection or respect to an unrelated person. The Unicron Trilogy universe has also used the term "cousin" for certain Transformers on occasion. The Victory manga from the Japanese Generation 1 era features Decepticon wives and children. Even the live-action movie features an Optimus and Megatron who are brothers, and it is mentioned in the related Nintendo DS game that Megatron "took the spark" of their father.

The case of Hydra and Buster from Japanese Generation 1 continuity is rare as they were originally human siblings before being converted into Transformers by Devil Z. Battle to the Death!! God Ginrai VS Darkwings RebornThe Birth of the Super Lifeforms Similar things happen to the case of Primus and Unicron, who were originally astral being before they got trapped in planetoids and converted their "vessels" into planet-size Transformers. Transformers: The Ultimate Guide

In the Dreamwave Generation One continuity, Getaway remarks that his proto-hatcher would have been proud of him for making the most wanted list. The Age of Wrath Pt.2

The IDW Generation 1 continuity has Ratchet mentioning that his "batch proto-initiator told me there'd be moments like this...", when he was wondering if he should take the humans and investigate the bunker in Nebraska. Infiltration issue 3

In Transformers Animated, Ironhide mentions that Brawn is "his brother from another batch proto-initiator..." Transformers Animated: The AllSpark Almanac II
Although Megatron is not known for his stunning success record, he did achieve a great military victory when he ordered his Decepticons to murder a puppy. The puppy was endowed with the power of Decepticon super science and all.

Fiction
Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers comic
It is unknown when Megatron abducted the puppy, but he nevertheless used it for hideous genetic experimentation. After much trial and error, he managed to contain within the puppy enough "Decepticon super science" to power all of Tokyo. The puppy subsequently escaped Decepticon headquarters.

Megatron swiftly ordered the Combaticons to pursue and gun down the puppy at all costs so that they could regain the super science. The puppy, now bleeding to death, managed to run into Powerglide, Kenji and the Minibots. Crawling into Powerglide's cockpit and interfacing with his computer, the puppy communicated with the Autobot and told him that he would transfer the rapidly fading super science into his new friend so that he could defeat Bruticus. The super science allowed Powerglide to briefly activate a new form of Scramble Power and combine with the other Minibots into the "Minibot Warrior Spiral attack". The ridiculous new attack drilled a hole through Bruticus, forcing the Decepticon combiner to flee back to base for repairs.

Afterwards, the puppy swiftly died in Powerglide's arms, having lived a life of abuse and neglect, devoid of love or compassion; his suffering at last came to an end. Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers issue 8
:Tailgate is an Autobot from the Generation 1 continuity family.

Tailgate is an Autobot scout, not so much for his skill (for he is mediocre at best) but for two unrelated reasons. First, his hood conceals a ridiculously powerful iron-cobalt magnet, which he can use to tailgate closely beside other vehicles and travel far into enemy territory without fuel. Second, his bizarre idées fixes make him extremely poor company for other Autobots.

Nobody knows where Tailgate got his screws knocked loose. Some say he was traumatized in a hazing ritual that went terribly wrong; others think it's simply the length of the war taking its toll. At any rate, he began causing problems soon after arriving on Earth, proclaiming speed limits to be an affront to liberty, and attempting to liberate "enslaved" household appliances from their alleged slavemasters. Nothing the veteran Autobots could do would dissuade him from his mad quest, or convince him that the machines of Earth were non-sentient. Eventually, it was decided to make him a scout, with strict orders not to break cover for any reason.

Still, every time he sees a bicycle chained to a pole, his spark burns hot with righteous anger. "Some day, my brothers will wear no chains," he thinks. "Some day, we shall break free!"
With the Autobots being framed by the Decepticon Trailer Brigade for numerous crimes, Kenji was feeling a bit dejected at how his schoolyard chums were suddenly turning on them. Tailgate appeared to give him a lift home from school and attempted to cheer him up, reminding him that as an Honorary Autobot he had nothing to worry about. Their drive was interrupted by a crowd gathering around a display put on by a pair of robed figures (secretly Rumble and Frenzy), decrying the Autobots and preaching the heroism of the Decepticons. The rest of the Autobots soon arrived to straighten things out. Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers issue 7

Tailgate later responded to a distress signal sent from Powerglide, who was fighting to rescue a puppy that was brimming over with Decepticon super science from the Combaticons. Dying from its wounds, the dog transferred the super science into Powerglide, giving him brief access to Scramble Power. Tailgate was one of a group of Minibots stationed at the Ark in 2006. When the Constructicons built Trypticon out of a human city, Mount St. Hilary and the Ark were the first stop on his journey to destroy Metroplex. Tailgate and the other Autobots on duty rolled out to defend the Ark with all the firepower at their disposal. It didn't go very well. The Ark was left devastated in Trypticon's mighty wake, and Tailgate's troops were beaten and scattered by the colossal dinosaur. Five Faces of Darkness, Part 5
Tailgate was one of the Autobots working with Emirate Xaaron and Ultra Magnus's covert cell on Cybertron, and was briefly seen when Optimus Prime came to Cybertron and rallied the troops for an assault on Darkmount. Resurrection!

He eventually finished his training at the Autobot Military Academy, but upon graduation was provoked into joining Flattop and Subsea in venturing underground, in order to prove his courage. When a group of Cybertronian Mutants attacked and slaughtered his fellow cadets, Tailgate stood his ground and successfully fought off the sewer-dwellers, thus proving he was not a coward... nor very good at watching his friends' backs in a fight. Underworld!
Tailgate was meant to be on Nova Prime's Ark mission, but a rash detour saw him crippled in a pit at the Mitteous Plateau. According to him, if he wasn't there for the launch, the mission was doomed, and so he tried to detonate his energon rations in the hope of being detected. Despite passing out over and over, he did finally manage it... six million years later, outside the Lost Light launch, and he had a panic attack when he saw his explosion had damaged Whirl. The Autobots, not knowing who Tailgate was, took him onboard the Light since he'd mentioned "the launch".
:Tailgate is a white-and-blue retooling of the 1984 Autobot Windcharger, transforming into a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am sports car. His head sculpt is much more elaborate than the earlier toy's (which shared the Microchange sculpt), and his chest sticker bears an odd resemblance to a portable radio.

:The original version of this mold is used by Camaro and Rook as well as the Mexican versions (yes, plural) of Tailgate—i.e. regular Windcharger redecoed only and not retooled. Tailgate's toy was used as the model for the non-toy comic character Wipe-Out.
